TO
create the George Michael Residence, (no affiliation with the namesake pop superstar) Cyprian architect Andreas Vardas formed an awesome synergy with his client from the start. Requesting only an open plan, ample office space, and two ensuite bedrooms, the client essentially gave Vardas the green light to design a house on a big plot full of banana trees. And lucky for the architect, his first rendering was spot on. »

⁄⁄ + ⁄⁄ “After we showed him the first model, we decided that that was it. No changes – nothing,” said Vardas, the founder of Vardastudio, located in the coastal city of Paphos. Within a couple of weeks the construction began, and over the next 11 months, Vardas, his client, and the contractors gathered at the site every Saturday morning at ten. “It was like a ritual. Even if we didn’t have to do anything, we had to go there. It became a necessity,” Vardas said. »

Their infectious enthusiasm for the project propelled them to build an open structure gleaming with natural materials and discernable nods to the surrounding banana plantation; multiple sliding doors and windows allow the trees to spill into the main living space, while the pool is situated like a lake lapping luxuriously against the breadth of the house. To give the water its lake-like aesthetic, Vardas and his team tiled the pool with field grey slate; setting a precedent for new projects, as his clients tend to prefer the dramatic affect over your typical L.A. pool. A pair of durable Iroko wood boxes hinged to the fair-faced concrete foundation also set the George Michael Residence apart from the mainstream.

RIGHT The open plan kitchen and dining area are minimal at the request of the client. It's the materials that stand out, the glass, wood and concrete.
“I’m obsessed with these things,” Vardas chuckles. “You can do whatever you want inside this environment.” He outfitted the upper floor bedroom suites with walk-in closets and fully glassed bathrooms peering out towards either the Mediterranean Sea, the Troodos Mountains and environ plantation. Materials like glass, white paint, and smooth Bangkirai wood for the deck were mindfully drafted in to offset the protective character of the concrete wall, floors, and ceilings. On the ground floor, a glass corridor running along the back end of the pool to a library offers a place to work and a quiet retreat from the main living space. The builtin birch wood bookshelf was patterned in such a way to reflect the overarching jigsaw theme of the architects’ design. The client, an accountant by trade, was so impressed by the final project that he made Vardas and his studio official guests – they have a key to the house and are welcome to use the pool whenever they want. h

THE CONCEPT OF COURTESY IN DESIGN HOW DOUGLAS CAMPBELL
A
builds IT INTO EVERY DETAIL
lthough Vancouver architect Douglas Campbell has designed many contemporary homes over the years, there’s a very old-fashioned concept at the heart of his work: courtesy. The way he sees it, a house can be courteous through a spirit of consideration and generosity in its design. “People have lost a sense of courtesy, but courtesy is a good thing,” Campbell says over coffee at the Vancouver Law Courts complex, which was designed by Arthur Erickson- one of his greatest influences. “A house can have an attitude. That’s what people should look for.” “Houses should be not only beautiful places but also as comfortable as a pair of jeans and as snappy as a tailored suit,” he adds. “Courtesy can be built into every detail. Courtesy can be built into the layout of its rooms, the way it opens to its surroundings, the way it fits into the landscape.” For gourmets, for example, a courteous house is designed around a creative kitchen and dining area that make every meal a celebration, he explains. For book lovers, it puts the collection in a place of pride. Campbell has developed this sense of humanity in his designs over the course of his successful career. He didn’t start out as an architect, however. The Winnipeg native first studied law at the University of Toronto, going on to work in general practice. Although he felt the profession was a logical choice for career stability, he discovered early that his heart wasn’t in it. »

After moving to Calgary, he began taking classes at the Alberta College of Art and Design and rented a woodworking shop to make furniture in the evenings and on weekends. “I found that I could leave my day job at 5 p.m. and not think about it again, but if I was working on a piece of furniture it could kind of possess me,” Campbell says. “I’d be thinking about it for hours. I loved drawing and painting.” “Later, I learned that you can take philosophical ideas and cast them into a concrete shape,” he says. “It was amazing to me that you can shape ideas into buildings so that activities, rituals, and the important things in society have an appropriate place.” After two years in the legal field, Campbell enrolled at the University of Calgary, completing his Master of Architecture in 1990. Over the years he has worked independently as well as with large firms including Carruthers & Associates Architects and Cannon Design Architecture, where he was vice president. Campbell, who was elected to the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada’s College of Fellows in 2013, has a diverse portfolio, from sprawling sports complexes in Alberta to modern West Coast homes with ocean views. It’s houses that appeal to the LEED accredited professional most. Having worked independently and strictly on homes since he moved to Vancouver with his wife in 2011, Campbell says he enjoys the collaborative process involved in designing a home and the relationships that develop as a result. “There’s a kind of intimate quality about houses,” says Campbell, who’s designed everything from craftsman-style homes for young families to sleek contemporary duplexes in which each unit has its own distinct character. “You get to know people. You’re building a vessel for these people’s lives and you can design around their personalities. You can try out different designs too; each family is different so every house is done very differently.” “The important thing in a house is not really whether it’s modern or traditional but how it fits a family,” he notes. “It should be shaped around people’s lives. The courteous house is comfortable, accommodating, and generous. It is just the right setting for the well-considered life.” h

THE REAL REWARD COREY KLASSEN KITCHEN & BATH DESIGN GURU MUSES ON CREATIVE COLLABORATION
if
the name Corey Klassen doesn’t resonate now, it may very well soon. Klassen, who took home four Kitchen and Bath awards in 2014 and one already this January from the National Kitchen and Bathroom Association is one of the foremost kitchen and bath design experts in Vancouver. Klassen is a Certified Kitchen Designer (CKD) and Certified Bathroom Designer (CBD), with a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A.) degree from the University of Manitoba, and a Diploma in Kitchen & Bath Design (Dipl. KBD). His designs have been gracing Vancouver properties since 2008 and the momentum isn’t slowing down. Meeting with Klassen is not a typical experience. Armed with a sense of humour and a strong repertoire of industry and design expertise, he prioritizes making people feel comfortable. His personality is a reflection of his design motto – creative collaboration, with a holistic approach to design and to living. Klassen discusses what inspires him and how he approaches each design with a fervent passion for uncovering his clients’ challenges and presenting solutions that reflect their passions. His approach to design is complex, with consideration for sustainable practices and products as well » as uncovering his clients’ unique needs are always apparent. »

ABOVE Smart kitchen details make all the difference, like this wall mounted pot filler faucet. RIGHT Contrasting kitchen cabinets adds visual interest and personality. “Often armed with a set of questions for designers, we approach them with questions like; ‘What is your favourite area to work in, or what is your design style’?” Klassen says. “I don’t think it’s the role of the designer to have a style; I think, it’s our role to mirror our clients, or to project their vision into reality,” he adds. Klassen also believes that although designers’ roles are to support their clients’ vision, it is also their role to ensure they offer options, and concepts to allow their clients to understand how design will impact how they use their space. His approach to creating the perfect space for his clients begins with a seven-page checklist to determine the very basics of his clients’ needs, from how they wake up in the morning to how they go to bed at night.

His concept, though thoroughly creative, is broken down methodically with tried and true process approaches to interior design. He begins with his checklist to identify problem areas and understand how his clients use their space currently, and what their vision for using the space looks like in the future. From there, he creates a semblance of what the project looks like, with very loose ideas and considerations for each of his clients to play with; this is often, he says, the best way to convey the message of the space and easy to change. He then proceeds to concept development, though not in a three-dimensional sense; with this he addresses everything from the fluidity of the space, cabinetry, preliminary layouts and more. Once there is a revised plan for his clients to approve, they move into sketching and building the concept until it is created into his clients’ dream; Klassens’ biggest reward. h
ABOVE AND LEFT Klassen's award-winning kitchen designs feature hardwood floors, granite countertops and tile mosaics.
Its designers endowed Gynko with soft-rounded forms, lovely details and clever dimensions, so you can make distinctive modular combinations with them. And then there’s the function of the arms: fold them up completely to lean comfortably against them or fold them down completely for a tidy look. Gynko is a technical highlight that fits perfectly with Leolux, but is also a really distinctive design, a shape with humour. Not every design producer will dare to include such a challenging sofa in its collection. But Leolux will, because it’s the special models that simply make the difference for Leolux.

AS A CHILD, YOU WANTED TO BE A MARVEL COMICS SUPER HERO. DOES THE CHARACTER OF MEI LIN SEEMS TO GET PRETTY CLOSE TO THAT WISH? Oh that’s so funny! Yes I loved the strength and magical powers of all those super heroes who were mostly guys. As Mei Lin, I got to fly around using high wires for some of my martial arts scenes so that was pretty close. Actually, for one really big scene when I confront the Imperial Family, I swung my sword and shattered a camera by mistake. It will end up in the ‘blooper’ reel! THERE WAS A LOT OF CONTROVERSY OVER THE AMOUNT OF NUDITY IN THE SERIES. HOW DID YOU OVERCOME THAT, ESPECIALLY IN YOUR PIVITOL FIGHT SCENE? Before I said yes to the role, I had a conversation with creator John Fusco that I didn’t want to be exploited the way Mei Lin was as a character. Artistically and from reading about the period extensively, I understood that the nudity was to show the dehumanizing situations Mei Lin had to overcome. I was nervous at first but after a while the nudity became a sort of costume in itself. WHAT DOES NETFLIX’S MARCO POLO EPIC MEAN TO YOU? The show really pushes boundaries because Hollywood has opened up the genre for English-speaking Asian actors to really dig their teeth into roles that are authentic and complex.

THE GREAT GARDEN ESCAPE: A PRIVATE oasis OF TRANQUILITY HIDDEN TREASURES ON CHARRING COURT
t
he view of the completely rebuilt residence from the quiet, tree-lined street near Burnaby Lake offers only a glimpse of understated elegance
– the garage is the focal point, with dark wood paneled doors juxtaposed next to pale, natural stone walls. The site slopes towards the back and is inconspicuous from the front, so passers-by won’t get a sense of how big the lot and the house really are. A closer look reveals glimpses of the home itself on either side from behind the garage: a bungalow in muted wood tones surrounded by wild flora. »

ABOVE Understated curb appeal blends well with the home's natural surroundings. BELOW The 'Garden Escape', nestled between the home and the garage, offers instant tranquility for both the homeowners and guests.
The homeowners got what they asked for: an understated home from the outside, with architecture and design on the inside poised to win awards. “From the road, it just looks like an average home on the block – and inside, we went crazy,” said Todd Best, Best Builders’ president and chief overseer of the rebuild. Best described the project as a ‘massive renovation’, incepted when he connected with the homeowners, who were considering buying the home that had been custom-built 30 years prior. “We do custom renovations, even custom rooms, as long as it’s people looking for something unique – something different – I want to emphasize their personality in the project,” Best said. This project started with vaults to create more light, and meetings with designers to create renderings. The job then evolved to include a butterfly style roof with multiple angles that took three months to frame – longer than the house itself. The result was a 100 per cent renovated home with all new mechanicals, plumbing and wiring. The butterfly roof, like many of the home’s other treasures, is also out of the line of vision of passers-by, and visible only to a bird’s eye. Behind the garage and before the entrance to the home lies one of the home’s most unique features; the ‘Garden Escape’.
⁄⁄ + ⁄⁄ BELOW Adding automated kitchen cabinets that open with the slightest touch are a useful tool and are becoming a common option for homeowners.
The outdoor garden is a small, peaceful-looking plot with thriving plants – a treasure hidden from view until the entranceway opens to reveal the interior courtyard. “The focus on the entranceway was we kept this really cool garden between the garage and the home because it creates this little area of tranquility,” said Best. “You get into the home, and it really opens up to the sunlight and the greenbelt, which was special to them.” “That’s the main focus of the house – so the garden interacts with the home,” Best added. Inside, most light comes in at sunset, bathing the great room in warmth. The 6,200-square-foot, four-bedroom, six-bathroom house is also a functioning ‘smart home’ with a fully automated media room with mood lighting. The kitchen cabinets are also automated, responding to the slighted touch by opening and pivoting. “Without playing with a bunch of switches, you can create and program in instant moods for every room
in the house,” said Best. “It was my goal to show them the reality of their vision- and it feels awesome.” Warm-toned wood grains are featured throughout the house, all natural and locally sourced. Solid Hemlock doors and cabinets in the large, airy kitchen are also custom stained. Homeowner Wayne Chang’s favourite element is how every thing is connected to the garden and the deckwhere his wife Sim regularly practices yoga. “We liked the layout, and the trail walk next to the house…but the house was old, so we decided to renovate, Chang said. “We were thinking a contemporary style with this kind of layout, also you can’t see the house from the street- only the garage.” The Changs had the swimming pool removed from the backyard and replaced instead with a jungle-gym playground for their two young daughters. Chang said the biggest change was the reduction made to the deck, which was huge.

THE PROJECT WAS INTENSE BUT FUN EVERYTHING WAS INTER-CONNECTED WITH LOTS OF CUSTOM FURNITURE. I WANTED THE WOOD IN THE HOME SUSTAINABLE AND LOCALLY SOURCED
“It was a strange, triangle shape, so we changed the layout and made it into a rectangle shape that we can access from the dining and living rooms,” he said. The Changs also wanted the house built to welcome frequent guests with a warm, inviting entranceway, big great room that occupies much of the space on the upper floor, and they wanted the kitchen to flow into an outdoor heated patio. Chang especially wanted wood siding that would match the surrounding wooded environment and minimalist, serene interiors in muted tones. “The real thing is better than I expected, better than the rendering.” Chang said. Interior designer Andrew Wan knew time was of the essence; the homeowners they knew what they wanted, and they also wanted the renovation completed within a few months so the family could move in in time for Christmas.

“The project was intense but fun, everything was interconnected with lots of custom furniture. I wanted the wood in the home sustainable and locally sourced,” Wan said. Wan also said he wanted the design aesthetic to invoke a sense of the old school Hollywood hills. Home designer Khang Nguyen remembered the vision for the project was to come up with a new shape or a new form that used a lot of the existing framing and footprint. “There were some really interesting elements happening in the existing house,” Wan said. “We played off of that a lot and basically reshaped the roof to create a bit more of a dramatic roofline that really changed the architecture of the home, but maintained the foundation and the main floor’s existing framing.” Nguyen said the site maintained that elusive looking shape from the front and maintains the low profile the homeowners wanted.

“From [the front] you don’t really know what’s going on, it’s when you go towards the back it really opens up,” he said. “With the forest in the back, it feels like you’re in the wilderness.” “With the space plan, the existing house is very segmented, and compartmentalized – there wasn’t much connection through the home in terms of light and flow, so I think a huge feature of the home is this opening up of the spaces to create a big and vast, open plan.” Originally, all the spaces in the home were interconnected through doorways and archways, and the design definitely called for an opening-up. “That was a huge change – the transformation of the home – it changed how the interior space worked,” Nguyen said. Nguyen used simple lines and material palettes, playing off the colours of the forest.

The formerly flat roof was a challenge, as was making sure the roof was going to shed water properly so water retention wouldn’t build. Special filtration was needed to catch debris falling from the surrounding trees. “Any time you’re pushing the envelope in terms of roof form – there’s lots of things that crop out of that beyond the design aesthetic,” Nguyen said. “I think that’s another architectural feature – the simplicity of how we shaped the roof to create such a dramatic roofline, but it’s designed in a really simple way.” Nguyen is proud of the project’s execution and the transformation in how the spaces work and the interior finishes. “It really looks like a different home and feels like a new home, the simplicity yet the effectiveness of the design and architecture, it’s created some great things as a result of the project,” he said. “I think it will be lasting and timeless, as the house ages, the colour palette is set up so it will look the way it does now in 50 years.” h

OF SPLASH FOR ANY ROOM
Wallpaper has made a huge comeback in interior design trends. Long gone is the stuff from the era of paste-a-wall and hang. These new papers are water-activated, eco-friendly, and easy to install. For a bold statement try a design in a small-scale space like the powder room, or an accent wall in the kitchen. These papers are safe to use all over the home and for added durability, you can even clear coat them. The powder room is the perfect place to experiment with big and bold style like these designs from Canadian wallpaper design company The Red Palette. Wow guests with arresting wallpaper that speaks volumes. The Red Palette designs each pattern and will collaborate to create custom wallpaper designs. Trending colour for the powder room? Deep Purple Dahlias.

hen I’m doing a space for clients, the powder rooms and en-suites are where they end up spending the money,” says Sandee Mann of CANTU Bathrooms & Hardware. Especially the powder rooms, he notes, because that is where the guests will go. Pedestal stone sinks, no storage and decorative splashes of colour are de rigeur for the showcase spa. And what is trending these days, whether it’s a powder room or full bathroom? Wall mounted taps and toilets were first on Mann’s list. They are aesthetically pleasing, and create more visual space in a small room, he says. Plus, wall mounted toilets add up to nine inches to the floor space, while wall mounted faucets are cleaner and allow more space on the counter. Speaking of faucets, chrome is the Number 1 finish among Mann’s clients. He is also seeing brushed nickel, which offers a more traditional look, an increase in polished nickel with its gold tones, matte black for a more masculine look and unlacquered brass in a throwback to the 1980s. Gold has been ‘in’ for a couple of years, he says, and he has seen a “little bit” of white. »

A sweet ENSUITE
When it comes to tubs, sometimes it is essential to have a tub in the space, but not neccesarrily to use the tub in the space. “When I ask my clients, probably 90 per cent never really use the tub,” he notes. Coloured tubs, like the blue or lime green ones seen in Fifty Shades of Grey are very on-point at the moment. CANTU has a red one in the showroom, says Mann, which would be a nice accent, or jewelry piece. And what if you do want to take a bath? Air jetted tubs as opposed to whirlpool (think Jacuzzi) tubs are a great way to go. Because there is a vacuum underneath, they are a more sanitary tub, and great for occasional bathers. As for the tub itself, minerals mixed with resin are the material of choice. They are used in tubs that offer sleek lines and have the added advantage of keeping the water at temperature, and help create a spa atmosphere at home. As for showers, a rain-head with a hand-shower is just about the only way to go. And those that want to up the stakes usually add a third element like a steam shower, body jets or a waterfall spout that create a massage function. And finally, what colours are most popular? Mann’s clientele are opting for the West coast, very clean and muted, choosing to let the “jewelry” pieces, like a sink, faucet or tub take centre stage. “We’re not getting really dark because I think we’re already kind of gloomy [on the West Coast] with the rainy period,” he says. “We brighten up the bathroom and make it more spa-like.” h

COMPACT KITCHEN: BIG LUXURY IN A SMALL PACKAGE SIZE ISN’T EVERYTHING WHEN IT COMES TO
stylish KITCHENS
they say
good things come in small packages and ‘small’ is definitely one of the trends in kitchens this year. Whether you have a condo or a full-size home, people are moving toward compact appliances, says Mark Eglinton, President of Euro-line Appliances West. “Space and living arrangements are at an all-time premium,” he says. “It’s never been more expensive to live.” Speaking of condo owners, he notes that installing fullsize appliances can cost “tens of thousands of dollars of living space.” The solution? Appliances in the 60-centimetre range, stacked in what he calls a “lifestyle, or luxury” tower. On the bottom a warming drawer, with a steam oven on top; above that comes a coffee maker, and the tower is topped with wine storage. Euro-line has also partnered with a couple of European suppliers to create its unique “Kompakt Kitchen”, a full and complete kitchen that fits in a six-foot wide by seven-foot tall space. The entire installment comes in a pre-assembled flat pack and runs around $11,000. »

Not just for condos, these kits have been embraced by laneway home and in-home suite owners, and by the yachting community. On a grander scale, there is a growing trend for the two-kitchen home. Owners are creating a “show” kitchen with all the latest full size appliances, where they entertain family and friends, but do the majority of the cooking in a “spice” kitchen, a smaller space somewhere else in the home where luxury compact appliances make an efficient workspace. Underfoot, Eglinton notes vinyl is making a huge comeback. The new generation boasts a dramatically increased quality, a more pleasing aesthetic (think hardwood lookalike) and a middle-of-the-pack price range. As for the plumbing fixtures, touch-free faucets are a more water efficient and hygienic option. Brass, black or gold fixtures are also in demand right now. For a visual pop, Eglinton says the backsplash is the perfect place to make a big splash, either with tiles and dramatic colours, or elegant backlighting. h

NEW ANN SACKS SHOWROOM OPENS in VANCOUVER
A
name synonymous with quality, ANN SACKS was founded in 1981 and built on the concept that tile and stone, with their tactile warmth, strength and versatility, are expressive mediums for creating imaginative spaces. The Portland, Oregon-based tile company entered the Canadian design market with the opening of its new Vancouver show room in February. Unlike a typical showroom, the new ANN SACKS quarters function as a workspace as well as an interactive showroom. The space is as much desired as are the hundreds of samples of luxurious tile.
+ words markella mildenberger
The showroom was created with the intention of allowing clients to work as they browse; a large table facing a set of TV screens allows clients to upload their design boards, blueprints or other material so they can view it and work with their plans. Even walking to the rear of the room provides a seamless transition to massive work-tables with pull out drawers housing even more samples. It isn’t just the design of the showroom that causes the ‘wow factor’, but the mix of artistically designed tiles in so many available materials and options. ANN SACKS is not the only collection you’ll find in this design paradise, look for names like Martyn Lawrence and Robert Kuo, among others. Of course the variety of available materials also lends to the creative process; everything from traditional ceramics to modern metallics, leathers and even concretes, all in customizable options. h

fter closing its Yaletown location last year, LightForm returned to Vancouver with the gala grand opening of its new Gastown Showroom in February. Located on the corner of Carrall Street in the old train station building, the designer lighting supplier sits in the realms of old world nostalgia coupled with their contemporary ingenuity.

Carefully curated lighting fixtures suspended from the 6,000-square-foot showroom’s 26-foot ceilings, create the perfect pairing of old and new, and the juxtaposition is beautiful. Strategically placed modular walls set on castors display areas of intended use for lighting pieces, from bathrooms to the great outdoors. Maintaining the integrity of the old heritage building, LightForm founder and president Richard Assaly and his team had to think outside the box when presented with these particular challenges. After more than a year of construction, LightForm opened its doors to the public with an overwhelming welcome from design professionals. Assaly discussed how LightForm has evolved over the past ten years from its original placement in Yaletown to its current location. » “This whole story was about giving back to the design community – the demand from designers for more contemporary lighting grew and the Yaletown location was just too small to accommodate the craving from the design community,” Assaly said. “As a longtime lighting partner for Vancouver design professionals, the new showroom was created with the specific needs of the design community in mind, [as] Vancouver designers are hungry for knowledge.” And true to the concept of the showroom, the space boasts cutting edge designs, with innovative suspended lighting, floor and table lamps, wall sconces and even outdoor lighting. The showroom is even equipped with cabinetry behind their display of LED wall sconces that open up to show designers how LED lighting actually works. Complementing the space and physiology of the layout are extensive collections of superbly crafted lights. “Vancouver is one of the most contemporary cities I’ve ever been to anywhere in the world.” Assaly said, and the selection displayed is only about half of what the showroom can display at once.” From the innovative ‘String Lights’ by Michael Anastassiades, with infinite length of wires that can literally be configured in any architectural layout to accommodate even the most awkward of power outlets, to the massive globes that hang with hundreds of glittering lights that add a sophisticated interplay of light, the showroom is a carefully curated piece of art. h

GIVING FASHION A PURPOSE: obakki's AMBASSADOR TREANA PEAKE
waths of narrow jagged charcoal mountains bisect parched golden sand. A vibrant orange sunset melts into an indigo blue and mauve sky like a watercolour painting gone awry; grey vein-like tributaries branch endlessly into rust-dotted cattle herds. This is the landscape of Namibia, visible from a small plane as photographed by Canadian philanthropist and clothing designer Treana Peake. It’s also part of her newest collection, Scarves For Water. Digitally printing the textures captured in those photographs, Peake designed three exquisite modele scarves launched recently by Anthropologie and sold in their stores and online across North America. “The scarves are named after three villages in the Namib Desert for which we have already drilled to provide wells for clean, fresh, water," Explains Peake, the founder and creative director of the edgy, luxury women’s brand, Obakki. During a tour of her new Gastown, Vancouver studio/factory in the midst of shipping the 2015 Spring/Summer Collection, it’s evident where her raison d’être lies: unlike most brands that endorse a charity to be socially conscious, the philanthropic Obakki Foundation actually drives Peak’s fashion collections. »

WE’VE DRILLED OR REHABILITATED 700 WELLS AND BUILT 12 SCHOOLS IN TWO COUNTRIES WE TRAIN AND EMPOWER THE LOCALS WITH JOBS. IT’S THE WAY I GIVE FASHION A PURPOSE
⁄⁄ + ⁄⁄
ABOVE & LEFT Foundation founder and designer, Treana Peake has travelled to South Sudan and Cameroon 40 times with her small team to oversee drilling or rehabilitating 700 wells and building 12 schools. The team trains and empowers the local people with jobs to provide fresh, clean water for their communities.
“Design is storytelling,” says Peake, “and I need to wrap myself around them by experiencing them first-hand.” For Peake as a child and later, for her own children, the old adage that ‘charity begins at home’ could not be more meaningful. Those “stories” began when Peake was growing up poor in the small town of Hanna, Alberta and an anonymous donor would leave envelopes containing cheques and food baskets at her family’s door. “To this day, I still don’t know who that was,” she admits. That act of kindness left an indelible mark on Peake, years before she gave any thought to a career in the fashion industry. By 18 she began working with Military Officer Ed Smith, collecting clothes, books and toys then travelling to Romanian orphanages still devastated years later by Nicolae Ceausescu’s regime. Peake is completely self-taught, and entered the fashion business by launching her first Collection in 2005 as a means to fund her humanitarian work. Married to her childhood
sweetheart, Nickelback guitarist, Ryan Peake and with two children, aged eight and 10, giving back is a family affair: they spent last Christmas at an orphanage in Cameroon. In 2009, with $500,000 in seed money from Nickelback to create the charitable Obakki Foundation, Peake chose to focus on South Sudan, the poorest country in the world with tribal wars constantly fought over water and access to wells. Travelling with a small passionate female team from Vancouver and always with a United Nations representative, it’s an incredibly risky adventure, as many villages are in conflict zones.

HER SCARVES FOR WATER ARE CARRIED EXCLUSIVELY BY ANTHROPOLOGIE STORES ACROSS NORTH AMERICA. 100% OF NET PROCEEDS GO DIRECTLY TO THE OBAKKI FOUNDATION TO BUILD WELLS IN SOUTH SUDAN AND CAMEROON.
“I try not to think about the danger and don’t tell my husband what I really see,” Peake confides down-playing the threat of being caught in any crossfire there. “We’ve drilled or rehabilitated 700 wells and built 12 schools in two countries and just as important, we train and empower the local people with jobs,” explains Peake. “I’ve been to Sudan and now Cameroon 30 or 40 times and I can’t tell you how gratifying it is to see that people have access to fresh, clean water that we take so much for granted in the West. “It’s the way I give fashion a purpose, ” she says with a smile.
Every collection designed by Peake has pieces that are influenced by the colours and rugged textures of Sudan and Cameroon. “The Dinka people are really the last of the nomadic tribes and the largest in South Sudan,” says Peake. “For the 2015 Spring/Summer Collection I was inspired by the naturally loose draped frayed sack cloth they wear; the way the women paint their arms in bright orange-red dyes; the striped sand dunes and even their textured mud dung huts.” Several of Peake’s photographs have also been digitally transferred onto T-shirts for Spring. Obakki’s celebrity clientele includes Kate Hudson, Gwyneth Paltrow and Olivia Cheng, but to the humble Peake, who feels uncomfortable partying in the glam Hollywood scene: “This isn’t a fad or trend for me – 100 per cent of net profits go directly to the registered charity. But if stars grab the public’s attention by wearing Obakki and that generates great word-of-mouth, just think of all those wells and schools the Obakki Foundation can build.” h

EXPLORING VANCOUVER'S MOST secret LOCATION WITH FOUNDER CAREY MELNICHUK
a
modern Alice need not fall through the rabbit hole in order to discover a Secret Location that embraces a delightfully playful “nothing is quite what it seems” lifestyle experience. That’s because it's founder and designer, Vancouver’s Carey Melnichuk has created the first Concept Store in Canada, melding fashion and food to entice all the senses in Gastown. Melnichuk, by her own admission, has stayed away from the limelight partially because she wanted to create a buzz through international plaudits first–like Paris Vogue naming Secret Location “one of the top 10 Concept Stores in the world.” The other is that she wants to be taken seriously on her own terms. The label ‘wunderkind’ just embarrasses Melnichuk even though the porcelain-skin fashionista with a shy pixie smile that becomes radiant when coaxed, belies an insatiable design and business acumen far beyond her age of 26 years.
RIGHT Founder Carey Malnichuk photographed by Peter Holst.
“I actually started to develop my vision and business plan for Secret Location when I was away at school getting my Masters in Fashion Design from Istituto Marangoni in Milan,” explains Melnichuk, who is fluent in Italian. “The key and lock pattern became our logo signature and is repeated in the pattern of the LED back-lit fretted woodwork and glass entrance, our ceiling and very subtly carried through from décor to the retail packaging.” Melnichuk even had a tiny key tattooed behind one ear by Milanese avant garde tattoo artist Pietro Sedda. Working closely with B+H Architects, Ledcor Construction and numerous local artisans, they converted the 11,000-square-foot heritage building (a meat-packing warehouse in the early 19th century) into a 7,500-square-foot. retail boutique and 3,500 sq. foot lounge and sunken dining area that opened in June 2012.

A half table and chair are seen in their entirety only when glancing at their completed reflection in a mirror. A wall of custom molded millwork Baroque actually hides extensive shoe storage. “I wanted beautiful accessibility to our stock,” says Melnichuk. “And the ladder on rungs to reach the highest cupboards is a flirty touch and practical. The white on white décor is a neutral easel showcase in Melnichuk’s words, “An art gallery of fashion and imagination.” Rolling racks and cabriole-legged tables may display the colourful and exquisite craftsmanship of Spanish designer, Jesus del Pozo’s Spring Collection; coffee table tomes that range from photography to Brazilian food; flamboyant millinery and hair accessories from Paris-based Maison Michel; classic men’s clothing with a dash of wit from Viktor & Rolf; or the ‘novel’ book clutches by Olympia Le Tan; and whimsical Italian housewares by Seletti. The boutique also boasts the only Twitter mirror in North America. If the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party had a 21st century renovation, it would resemble Secret Location’s stylish Tasting Room. Melnichuk’s fluid, whimsical design throughout the space is a perfect pairing with the technical food wizardry and beautiful platings created by Executive Chef Jefferson Alvarez. From the hand- selected slabs of quartz that make up the lounge bar and lit from within to glow purple at night through the stunning turquoise and green soft furnishings under the fanciful Marie Coquine umbrella chandelier designed by Philippe Stark for Baccarat, to the mid-century white Masters Chairs by Starck and Eugeni Quitlet, nothing has escaped Melnichuk’s inspired eye. Looking closely at the glass Chef’s table at the rear of the restaurant, Lens, designed by Patricia Urquoila, one sees that it cleverly mimics Secret Location’s key pattern swirls on the ceiling. “When I started at age 22, I really had to build relationships from the ground up. I’d go on buying trips to Europe and New York during Fashion Weeks and suppliers would often be surprised meeting me that I was not an older man!” she admits laughing. But now they really respect me and know what I’m looking for.” Melnichuk’s thirst for knowledge and new ideas never wanes. “I’m away for six weeks out of the year buying and it’s really hectic but I make myself do one wonderful cultural thing on each trip – all the great museums like the Louvre stay open late.” h
TOP One might easily be tempted to stay too long in Secret Location’s bathroom just to admire the mural designed by Carey Melnichuk. CREATING WORLDS OLA VOLO STYLE MIDDLE EASTERN INFLUENCE
to
see the world through the fantastical, folkloric eyes of Vancouver artist Ola Volo, you don’t need to look far. Her intricateas-Russian-nesting-dolls illustrations front local and national magazines and colour billboards. Volo is one of Vancouver’s rising art stars and her outlook depicts the world in a fashion found more often on the eastern seaboard of the Atlantic than out west. An Emily Car University of Art and Design (ECUAD) graduate, Volo’s client list reads like a who’s who of Vancouver businesses: Hootsuite, Vancouver Opera, the Vancouver Folk Music Festival. Volo’s playful works cover the walls of Lululemon’s Robson Street flagship store, a Mobify boardroom, Save on Meats and even Chip and Shannon Wilson’s work out room (and the only room visible from the street in their Point Grey home). “Being in Vancouver is such a huge influence with all

the animals and nature,” explained Volo on the phone from her studio. “When I was in New York, being there changed the direction of my work. Everything became busier: fashion and city oriented. My work is constantly evolving according to where I am.” Volo’s influences include her culture–she’s of Russian/Polish descent and spent her first ten years in Almaty, Kazakhstan; her art instructors–a water colour painter from Paris, an expert in shading from Moscow and a well-connected ECUAD illustration/graphic design professor and, lastly, her surroundings: Volo’s lived and worked in cities like Rotterdam, New York and Novi Sad (Serbia). Volo’s family moved to Vancouver when she was 10, so she uses her art to reconcile and interpret her many cultures. »

“Kazakh culture is really different from Russian culture. There are a lot of Middle Eastern influences as well as Asian. We were actually right on the border of China. A lot of the cuisine and folklore passed down were Middle Eastern. It naturally became a big influence of growing up there,” says Volo. Growing up, Volo drew daily, creating a unique graphic style that weaves nature, people, animals and architecture together in complex pieces rich with symbolism and subtleties. “Because my culture was such a huge part of my childhood–to practice that on a daily basis and illustrate that particular style, that is so homelike and welcoming. It’s like creating your own language and world,” she said.
A LOT OF THE CUISINE AND FOLKLORE PASSED DOWN WERE MIDDLE EASTERN. IT NATURALLY BECAME A BIG INFLUENCE OF GROWING UP THERE.
⁄⁄ h ⁄⁄ Take, for example, her first commissioned artwork. Volo was asked to create an art panel depicting Vancouver Translink. Instead of cold, glass and steel structures and sleek modernist design the city is known for, “The Swan and the Bear” is a warm fairytale that shows a vibrant, creature-filled side to the eternally wet city. The high rises of Yaletown/False creek look Eastern European and folky. There’s a bear crossing a bridge from the north, a swan hugging a woman nestled on the south side of False Creek symbolizing our close encounters with nature, according to Volo. The snail perched mid-bridge, meanwhile, symbolizes Vancouver traffic. It’s likely one of the most imaginative and symbolic representations you will ever see of the City of Glass. h

TIPS FOR RENTING A VACATION VILLA
t
here is nothing quite like a vacation in a ‘home away from home’. Not only do vacation villas provide amenities that you wouldn’t normally find at hotels like full kitchens and washers and dryers, they can be an excellent way to get the luxury of extra space and complete privacy. Renting the right house or villa from a website can be risky. ‘Who’s seen them? Who’s actually been there?’ are important questions to ask before committing. So, whether you are renting a house in Maui or a luxury villa in Tuscany, there are few things to keep in mind you so can rest assured that you’ve chosen the right accommodation and will have a great experience. »

BOOK EARLY. If the destination is popular and you would like to travel during peak times, get started as soon as possible. As with most things, the best rentals tend to go first. So the sooner you can get started, the better options you’re likely to have.
BE AWARE OF MINIMUM-STAY REQUIREMENTS. For example, some renters require a typical four-to-seven-night minimum stay during peak dates. This is standard practice in popular beach and ski destinations.
BEWARE OF ANY LISTING THAT DOESN’T HAVE REVIEWS. Ask for references if reviews aren’t available and before leaving for your trip, get the name of a local contact or property manager to help you if any problems arise.

PAY ONLINE BY CREDIT CARD OR VIA SECURE SERVICES LIKE PAYPAL. It’s the safest option to protect your travel investment. If an owner requires you to send cash or use a wire transfer service, consider it a red flag and move on to another rental.
VISIT A VARIETY OF DIFFERENT WEBSITES. Some good sites to use for vacation rentals are HomeAway.com, FlipKey.com, and VRBO.com (Vacation Rental By Owner). I suggest that you read reviews for a single property on at least two different sites to get a clearer picture of what to expect. THE CRÈME DE LA CRÈME OF THE WORLD’S FINE AUTOMOBILES
s the frenzy of the winter auto show season winds down, it becomes a little easier to look back and contemplate which vehicles really stood out from the crowd. With Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Montreal and Toronto behind us, buyers can wait expectantly until their particular favourite shows up at the dealership. Of course, not all cars that glitter on the show displays actually end up making it to production, and others are still a year or two off. Even so, there’s lots to look forward to and with auto manufacturers reporting record sales just about everywhere, we can only assume that there’s even more excitement down the road. Competitive pressures dictate that prices for these new models are often hard to get as automakers wait until the last moment before announcing them.
words tony whitney
As far as the “green” segment goes, things seem to have quieted down, though there are some interesting products on the way and some of them are, surprisingly, in the high-performance market. In fact, the idea of a high-performance GT car with an electric motor or three to boost torque levels is very appealing indeed. That’s exactly the route Acura has taken for its longawaited NSX replacement. Even the most well-heeled of drivers seems happy with enhanced fuel economy, even if gas is a little less expensive right now. One of the most intriguing trends is the flurry of super-luxury SUVs under development. Bentley, Jaguar, Maserati and even stately Rolls-Royce are said to have models on the way to finally challenge the well-earned supremacy of the Range Rover. It’ll be an interesting market battle to observe, even if you’re not in the hunt for a premium off-roader. h

The NSX that reigned from 1989 until 2005 was always much admired and for several years, rumours about a replacement have been circulating. Now at last, it’s on the way and even more spectacular than ever. As with the original car, bodywork is of aluminum but this time, more use has been made of lightweight composites. Power is supplied by a twin-turbo V-6 which employs three electric motors to create what Acura calls a “sport hybrid system.” The 550-horsepower engine delivers power to all four wheels via a nine-speed transmission. The car was designed and engineered by a global team in the U.S., where it will be built. The slinky mid-engined NSX should be available by year’s end, but no price has been announced.
Ford’s last GT was modeled closely on the legendary GT40 race cars that dominated Le Mans in the 1960s. This latest GT, though, is taking a confident run at the serious supercar market. Like rivals from Ferrari, McLaren and Lamborghini, the GT uses mostly carbon fibre for its bodywork and the styling is nothing short of sensational. The doors swing upwards like some of its competitors and the interior is both contemporary and practical with digital electronic instrumentation, not unlike that of a current jet fighter. The mid-engined GT uses a 600-horsepower 3.5-litre V-6 EcoBoost and the power is kept under control by huge carbon ceramic brakes. This is the most exciting Ford for many years and will be sure to attract lots of showroom visitors– something every dealer is happy to have. The GT will be built at a new plant in Markham, Ontario, so this most welcome supercar has a little Canadian DNA in its makeup.
Top of the coupe/cabriolet line for BMW are the 6 Series models–sleek, elegant, highperformance automobiles that come in many versions. The recently shown 2016 range includes a two-door coupe and a two-door convertible, plus expected “M” super high performance variants. Also due to arrive is a four-door Grand Coupe, which should be a worthy contender for rivals like the Porsche Panamera and Mercedes CLS Class, not to mention Audi’s A7. Buyers can choose from three engines–a 315-horsepower inline six, a 445-horsepower V-8 and a 560-horsepower M V-8. All have BMW’s TwinPower turbo configurations. These new 6 Series BMWs are the latest in a long line of coupes that go back decades now. They have always been among the ultimate grand touring cars, capable of gobbling up considerable distances while maintaining the ultimate in comfort for occupants.

ROYCE PHANTOM 6 ROLLS BESPOKE COLLECTION
After decades of absence, famed Italian automaker Alfa Romeo is re-entering the Canadian market to the delight of many fans of the historic nameplate. Although many classic Alfas linger on in the hands of enthusiasts, we haven’t seen a new model here since the 1980s. That’s all changing now thanks to the big merger between Chrysler and Fiat to create what’s now called FCA, or Fiat Chrysler Automobiles. The 4C is a highly attractive and desirable sports coupe or convertible powered by a four-cylinder 1750 cc turbocharged engine developing a solid 237-horsepower. With its lightweight bodywork, power levels should provide a spiriting driving experience and Alfa Romeo is famed for agile, predictable handling. The nose is replete with the almost legendary Alfa Romeo grille that’s been around for many decades. Welcome back Alfa!
One of the most muscular sedans on the Canadian market, the 2015 Mercedes-AMG C 63 is described by its manufacturer as “a powerful high-performance athlete” and that about sums it up. Under the hood is a handassembled 4.0-litre biturbo V-8 developing a hefty 503-horsepower in optional S guise. The car tops 100 km/h in just four seconds and top speed is electronically limited to 250 km/h. Despite this impressive level of power, the C 63 is remarkably fuel-efficient with a combined rating of just 8.2-litres/100 km combined. Add to this track-developed handling and agility and you have a serious sports car in tastefully understated sedan bodywork. Sporty it may be, but the C 63 offers exceptionally high levels of comfort for day-long drives and Mercedes’ widely respected standard of quality is all part of the package.
You’ll have to go to Dubai to find one exactly like this, but the Rolls-Royce Maharaja Phantom Drophead Coupe is a fine example of what the respected British automaker can do for you if you decide to make a choice from the company’s Bespoke Collection. Cars in this range are built individually or in small numbers and are very special, even by Rolls-Royce standards. The Phantom is the company’s largest model and the Drophead the most exclusive. These cars combine silky V-12 power with unexcelled occupant comfort and though they are unarguably big, they handle surprisingly well, even on winding mountain roads. The level of quality in the materials used for this opulent motorcar is astonishing and the Phantom is understandably expensive, especially so in Bespoke guise.

GOING EVEN FURTHER WEST TO
lotusland
hef Geoff Rogers’s career skyrocketed after he had a run on the third season of Top Chef Canada. The Calgary contender proved his chops after training at some of his native city’s top spots – the Red Door Bistro, River Café, and Home Tasting Room among them. He went on to open his own restaurant, Market, which flourished. The affable culinary maven could have kept riding that wave of spectacular success. But he’s not one to rest on his laurels. So, in the spring of 2013 he packed his bags and headed west. “I felt I had accomplished everything I wanted to in Calgary,” Rogers says. “Top Chef Canada had come out and Market was booming, but I was kind of getting lost in all the publicity. It was necessary for me to take a step back to take a giant step forward and find myself. Sometimes you just have to do these things as frightening as they may be,” he adds. “Even if there’s no safety net, you just have to do it.” “I always wanted to live on the west coast. It’s called Lotusland for a reason. It’s so beautiful.” After taking on the role of Chef de Cuisine at Vancouver’s Fable Restaurant – headed by another Top Chef Canada competitor, the talented Trevor Bird – Rogers joined Blacktail Restaurant and Lounge in the summer of 2014. Situated in the heart of historic Gastown and featuring a warm, woodlandinspired design, Blacktail, which is open for lunch and dinner, puts the focus squarely on the best of B.C. As Executive Chef, Rogers has already made his mark; response has been overwhelmingly positive, with praise for his deft, innovative handling of local products, such as albacore tuna and Cache Creek natural beef. “Our approach is to take the best ingredients we can get our hands on and apply techniques to enhance them,” says Rogers, pointing to his unique use of sous vide to prepare freshly shucked oysters. “We’ll use modernist techniques to enhance what we have without adulterating the flavours in any way.” And yet some things are done the old-fashioned way; duck breast, for instance, is always cooked in a cast-iron pan from start to finish. While his kitchen skills are unmistakable, there’s something simpler at the heart of his cooking. “A friend of mine, who’s a home cook, summed it up best: cooking is caring,” Rogers says. “That’s exactly it. I use what I know how to do to make other people enjoy themselves. That’s pretty cool.” h

VANCOUVER’S HYCROFT MANSION THE jewel OF SHAUGHNESSY
nly the beau monde of early 20th century Vancouver was invited to Hycroft Mansion’s legendary New Years Eve masquerade balls, hosted every year by business tycoon, brigadier-general and Conservative MP and senator Alexander Duncan McRae and his wife Blaunche, the high-society daughter of American millionaire George Coleman Howe. Designed by English architect Thomas Hooper, Hycroft Mansion took two years to build, starting in 1909, at a cost of $100, 000. The home was the jewel in the McRae crown, with imported Italian marble and art nouveau tiling, French pastoral landscape wallpaper, stained glass and rare woods. Skilled artisans such as Charles Marega were hired to create the heavy, ornate plasterwork that is still seen today in every room — except, of course, in the cramped servants’ quarters. Hycroft, on the northern edge of Vancouver’s Shaughnessy district, was home for more than 30 years to the McRae family, which included three daughters: Blanche, the eldest, and Lucile and Margaret, who shared a bedroom with an elaborate fireplace their entire childhood on the second floor of the 20,000-square-foot Edwardian mansion. The girls were across the hall from their mother’s wing, which included bedroom, dressing rooms, tiled bathroom, solarium and office overlooking manicured gardens and a mature sequoia tree brought up from California.

Blaunche, the McRae matriarch, died in 1942. Her husband sold Hycroft to the federal government for $1 that same year to use as convalescence home for war veterans. When the patients were moved to Shaughnessy Hospital in 1960, Hycroft was abandoned and raccoons took up residence. Two years later, the University Women’s Club of Vancouver (U.W.C.V) thought it the perfect clubhouse despite its derelict state and raised the $35,000 needed to buy it. (Women weren’t given bank mortgages at the time, so the club paid cash.) A similar amount was raised to restore the home’s palatial interior. Today, Hycroft is open to the public, as well as being a home away from home for more than 400 members, whose club mandate is advocating for the education and rights of women and girls. To help fund maintenance, the mansion stays busy with public lectures and music recitals, weddings and receptions and movie shoots. (Christmas at Hycroft is a popular annual public event.) The mansion is a draw for more than just the public. Some claim the corridors are haunted by a soldier, an unknown woman and a poltergeist. U.W.C.V president Dawn Longshaw chuckles at the alleged paranormal sightings. “A grand house like this,” she says, “tends to stir people’s imaginations.” h

MEGA INTERNATIONAL ART FAIR COMING to VANCOUVER
V
ancouver’s art scene will witness, for the first time, the artistic blitz usually found at monumental international fairs like Art Basel and Art Miami when Art! Vancouver arrives at the Vancouver Convention Centre in May. From May 21-24, the inaugural exhibition will feature some of the finest artwork by independent artists, and from international galleries across Canada and around the world. “Everyone wants to come to Vancouver, but we don’t have an event like this- nothing to this calibre,” said Lori McPhee, creative director, Art! Vancouver. McPhee said the Fair represents a sign of the times, as busy art lovers don’t always have the time to visit every gallery they’d like to peruse. “That’s why these events are so successful, because you’re creating one large platform for people to come in and see a variety of everything from around the world at one location.”

Lisa Wolfin, director, Art! Vancouver said the aim is that the fair will gain momentum and grow into what will become like the ‘Art Basel’ scene. “Art Basel started it, then Art Miami, now there’s all these different names because so many galleries and artists want to be a part of it,” Wolfin said. Wolfin added now is the time for Vancouver to host an international art fair because the market is up- and that nearly 40 per cent of art sales happen at art fairs. “We have the interest of the world, looking here at what’s going to happen,” said Wolfin. “A show like this gives everyone the opportunity to come and show their stuff from all over the world, and come to Vancouver.” h For more information go to artvanouver.net.

What put Vancouver on Trump Hotels International’s radar?
ABOVE Inside the show suite at Trump Tower.
This is a very liveable city…Certainly this is a gateway city, we have a great deal of respect for the cultural elements that are represented here, and Canada has been very good to us. We’ve had great success in Toronto, and we think that having a combination of Vancouver and Toronto locations works extremely well for us. I think that the primary part- when you look at cities around the world, and cities around North America that can support luxury, Vancouver, because of the investment that has been made here in this city, is one of the cities that can support it. When you look at the quality of what is built herethe quality is exceptional. It works well for us as a luxury brand, and we want to be careful about where we place the brand- we want to make sure that its properly represented.

ROSEWOOD HOTEL georgia
UNDERGROUND COCKTAIL BAR aptly named PROHIBITION
R
osewood Hotel Georgia recently announced the opening of its underground vaulted cocktail bar, Prohibition. A throwback to the age of decadence, glamour and prosperity, the 3,000square-foot bar invites patrons to travel back in time to the roaring twenties with bespoke cocktails, daily live musical entertainment and interiors that create an intimate ambiance that reflects the era’s notorious speakeasies. Created by the Munge Leung, the Toronto-based design firm which also spearheaded the renovation of Rosewood Hotel Georgia in 2011, Prohibition’s interior is reminiscent of the covert cocktail bars and pulsing jazz speakeasies of the 1920’s, but on a grand scale. Inside, an ornate ceiling clad in Macassar Ebony plays against the sleek black stone bar, a custom-designed glass-and-metal chandelier and richly upholstered bar stools. The innovative cocktail program was designed by award-winning bartender Brad Stanton, who drew inspiration from the indulgence and mystique surrounding the prohibition era. Custom cocktail creations challenge convention, while vintage cocktails will honour the roots of the bartending craft. The menu will also feature a champagne selection and a diverse offering of wines, spirits and craft beers, as well as food items including Northern Divine Caviar, Belgian Truffled Pate and Smoked Duck Poutine by Rosewood Hotel Georgia’s Executive Chef Ken Nakano. h
