editor’s message
Putting together a magazine is a monumental task it’s true, but it’s definitely a labour of love for all those involved. It can also be extremely fun; I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend their work day in a gorgeous multi-million dollar home with creative people, delicious food and luxuriously expensive items including jewellery that comes with its own security detail. I would. So we did just that when we shot our Living in Luxury feature for this, our Luxury Issue of Homes & Living. It’s human nature to yearn for something more than what we already have—we’re fickle creatures. Even those who already enjoy the finer things in life will dare to dream of desirable things they have yet to own or experience for themselves. So what exactly is ‘luxury’? Well, for different people this may mean different things. The dictionary defines luxury as, “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense.” It is also a means of indulging one’s tastes and desires and at this time of year—as we close one year and look forward to the next—what we all desire is that feeling of comfort, elegance and yes, indulgence, that is the essence of all that is luxurious. With that in mind, we’ve put together a magazine chock full of stunning homes, entertaining articles and all the bling, sparkle, comfort and joy that you covet for your shopping lists and bucket lists—enjoy! On behalf of all of us here at Homes & Living magazine, I wish you an enjoyable holiday season and a successful and luxurious New Year.
Sincerely,
Michelle van der Merwe, Editor-in-chief

DESIGNER PROFILE chat with the style gurus

INTERIOR Design BY
When it comes to the homes Harmony Sense Interiors creates, looks can be deceiving. “Our style is clean, modern, comfortable—we want spaces to be beautiful and functional, ones people enjoy living in,” explains principal Lucila Diaz (right). Design partner Anna Shimizu (left) chimes in, detailing how the philosophy revolves around mixing and matching classic and contemporary elements, adding in layers and texture and then finding that one special piece to make a room feel complete to the last detail. The full service firm works on new builds and renovations, as well as staging homes and consulting on colours. Their skills complement each other’s; Diaz has a mathematician’s mind (and an undergraduate degree in statistics), while Shimizu’s BA in art history is perfect for all things aesthetic. What sets them apart, according to Shimizu, is their transparency and awareness of the bottom line. “We pass on our trade discounts to our clients,” she says. Diaz explains further. “We guide their choices to make financial sense. For instance, you want certain things to be timeless. You don’t want kitchen cabinets to go out of fashion in five years because it’s expensive to change those out.”

Like a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant or the tailoring of a Brooks Brothers suit, it’s often the details that elevate something to truly extraordinary. Cypress House is no exception. Even from the street, where copper-lined steps faced with natural blond stone lead up through a gate to the modern Tudor-style home, those seemingly small specifics make this house stand out. Surrounded by lush, cool gardens thick with Japanese maples and ferns, this 6,400-square-foot house was completely redone six years ago. Additional copper-lined stone steps—which match the copper gutters, the flagstone, and the great room walls inside—lead beneath an archway and through the home’s solid, custom-built arched door. These arches are the first of a pattern seen throughout the house, particularly on the main floor. “There’s a lot of consistency and a tremendous amount of detail throughout,” explains Keith Harfield of Harfield & Associates Marketing Inc. Step inside and it somehow feels, well, safe. That’s no accident, says Harfield, who points out wide German black walnut plank flooring, Italian travertine limestone, and heavy custom-crafted doors. “This house is extremely solid—it’s been built like a battleship.”

The holiday season is a time for family and friends, for traditional comforts and extravagant indulgences; it’s a time for entertaining and being entertained and let’s face it—we all strive to do it in high style.
So how do the well-to-do—the affluent, prosperous, well-heeled crowd—live and entertain at this time of year? Well, H&L will take you behind the wrought iron gates so you can wander through a luxurious home filled with all the bling, sparkle, comfort and joy one could dream of; from sparkling chandeliers, crystal and jewellery to cars and plush throws for chilly nights.

The highlight of the fall season for design industry professionals, interior designers and architects is an annual ritual that takes place over four days in September—the Interior Design Show West (IDSwest). Held at the Vancouver Convention Centre, the event sprawls over three large exhibit halls and features a vast selection of exhibitors that attracts over 31,000 visitors, both trade and consumer. The Party on Opening Night kicked everything off with a fun social evening that included entertainment by DJ Wax, Underground Circus and Men’s Fashion Week and plenty of wine. It was an opportunity to check out some of the exhibits, mingle with design icons and media and get a peek at the gorgeous custom-built H&L
Laneway Home. The home and the adjacent Laneway Lounge were definitely the hot spots of the show, and the H&L booth drew people in from the other side of the hall with its stunning light configuration and colourful couches—an invitation to lounge. The H&L Laneway Home was a labour of love for all of us at H&L, IDSwest, Alair Homes, Modern604, Millson Technologies and all the other amazing companies who contributed time and money and energy to this project—thank you to everyone. The home was live-auctioned off on World Alzheimer’s Day with all proceeds going to the Alzheimer Society of BC. Congratulations to Keith Scott and family who offered the winning bid.
