Editor’s

message

I live in a little village, within the big city, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the exceptional aspects of living here is how British Columbians embrace pastoral, while celebrating cosmopolitan. Our big city is made up of a diverse array of small villages and neighbourhood enclaves. As autumn descends on our shores; we are reminded of how this multiplicity and sense of community adds to our quality of life. We don’t really retreat indoors during the colder months, do we? Instead, British Columbians embrace the weather and take up different sports and outdoor activities. However, it also becomes the perfect time to work on inside home projects and Homes & Living magazine’s ‘Embracing Autumn’ issue is all about helping you achieve that goal.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Tony Parsons is sharing his Take on the Art of Conversation [page 42] – a must read in this issue. Celebrity interior designer and H&L columnist Jeffrey Fisher casts a Moroccan spell on us, taking us to Marrakesh [page 20]; showing readers how to infuse colour and spice into this year’s home decor. On a more intimate note, if you are looking to add a little glamour to your master bedroom this season, check out H&L’s article, Glam Therapy on page 64.

16

Meet Rick Hansen – this issue’s Celebrity Profile. I don’t think I fully understood the depths of the term ‘Difference Maker’ until this interview. Read about an inspirational Canadian

who rose above a life-changing accident to become a force to be reckoned with for more than twenty five years. What does the future hold for Canada’s Man In Motion? Where does his family love to vacation in BC? Find out on page 28. H&L’s feature home, Altamont Manor [page 48] is a little piece of traditional heaven in West Vancouver. Custom built by Can-Rel Homes, this is the perfect home for our Embracing Autumn issue. Altamont Manor is a Europeaninspired residence that spans three levels and 8,038 square feet. Escape with H&L to Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa [page 98]. If you are looking for a different take on an Okanagan adventure, Spirit Ridge is the place for you. Situated in Canada’s only desert in Osoyoos, BC, this unique resort property offers so much to do, and seamlessly blends casual elegance with modern conveniences. As you fall forward, enjoy the cooler weather and embrace it as the perfect reason to get to know your own home–your personal retreat–all over again.

The Man, the Olympian, the Difference Maker.

Words by tracey drake

34 countries, 4 continents, 40,075 kilometres and that was only the start of his journey...

Twenty five years of the incomparable man in motion You only have to be in Rick Hansen’s presence for a few minutes to feel the power of his conviction and immense love for life. It is at once humbling and exhilarating. What started with a personal tragedy in 1973 has become an extraordinary story of strength, commitment, perseverance and national pride for Rick Hansen.

The Making of a Difference Maker On June 27, 1973, Rick Hansen and a friend were riding in the back of an open bed pickup truck, returning home from a fishing trip. Hit by an oncoming car, both were thrown from the vehicle, and 15 year old Rick sustained a spinal cord injury that would leave him paralyzed from the waist down. During the 1970s and 1980s, Rick completed arduous rehabilitation, took up table tennis [winning a gold medal at the Pacific Northwest Games for the Disabled] and went on be the first person with a physical disability to graduate from the University of British Columbia with a Degree in Physical Education.

Left. Rick Hansen wheeling accross Allenby Bridge in Jordan.

It is also during this period that Rick met his would-be mentor, Terry Fox – through the game of basketball - and the two became fast friends. In fact, it was Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope that inspired Rick to embark on the Man on Motion World Tour in 1985. Terry Fox was also a personal inspiration for Rick Hansen, who went on to win 19 international wheelchair marathons, the world title 4 times, 9 gold medals at the 1982 Pan American Wheelchair Games, and represented Canada at the 1984 Olympics. In 1979, 1980, and 1982, Rick Hansen was named Canada’s Disabled Athlete of the Year. After the Terry Fox Miracle of Hope run was halted due to illness, the Man In Motion Foundation sponsored the Terry Fox Exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum – a lasting legacy for Rick Hansen’s mentor, benevolent champion and friend.

Hearth &

home The one common fact about living in a great country like Canada is that we all share the winter season. Whether you’re up to your knees in snow or deluged with drizzle, the bleak, sunless days of winter remind us of the importance of making our interior spaces warm and cheery. Creating light and energy in our environments is key to helping us shake off the effects of Canada’s dreary winter months.

Family Plan

The three key elements the couple was looking for were function, comfort and warmth. They also wanted to preserve the turn-of-thecentury Edwardian style but add a modern twist. The clean and simple wide-rail, shaker-style cabinetry, in Benjamin Moore’s Oxford white paint, defines the style. Continuing the dark oak hardwood flooring, used throughout the rest of the house, into the new kitchen, seamlessly connects the space to the adjacent family room and adds a ton of warmth to the area.

october/november 2012

It was with this in mind that Stephan and Anna Maria embarked on a major kitchen renovation in their 30’s era home. Dark, cramped and too small for their growing family, their existing kitchen certainly wasn’t suited for entertaining. A plan was devised to extend the existing kitchen with an addition that would double its size to include a large island, a floor-to-ceiling pantry and beverage centre, a comfy breakfast nook and, the piece de resistance, a lounge area with modern fireplace.

tony’s take

on the Art of Conversation...

tony parsons broadcaster

Born in England in 1939, Tony came to Canada as a 10 year old boy. Originally wanting to be a lawyer, Tony was persuaded to become a broadcaster, and after decades of broadcasting in radio and television across Canada, Tony now works for CHEK and CBC Vancouver.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

I had a real conversation a while ago.

42

Well, two in fact - both of them in situations that make exchanges between two people easy and pleasurable. Old friends sitting down over lunch or, in the other case, a beer after a round of golf in Kelowna. In both instances they were encounters following a long period of not seeing either one of my friends. Nino had become almost estranged from a group of friends we both share. I missed him. So I called to bring him back into the fold as it were. And of course we had a lot to tell each other. And a lot to ask. What was he doing now? How did he spend his time now that he was all but retired? How was his family? You know, the kind of chat that follows the sudden realization that someone has been missing from your life for far too long. Now, because we both reached out, we’re semiregular lunch companions again. And happier. And we always seem to have something to talk about. In Brian’s case it was two old buddies simply “catching up.” But the point is we were talking, face to face. No emails, although I’m sure they both can and do. No tweets, no twitters. Conversation the way it used to be as in Sunday dinners around the family table; just a natural exchange of information. Nothing that would change the world. Words flying every which way in a fun and easy fashion. What I’m getting at here is the art of conversation!

Altamont is considered one of West Vancouver’s most private and exclusive enclaves. This neighbourhood west of Dundarave village — often dubbed West Vancouver’s Shaughnessy — offers its residents a scenic beach and park, both named after this picturesque, elegant community. Upon exploring these quiet, winding roads you will find sprawling gated estates surrounded by towering trees and park-like settings. Altamont’s landscape slopes gently towards the water and ensures many of the luxurious family homes here sit on generous lots. Altamont Manor is one of these properties. It boasts gorgeous natural surroundings and tranquility that make this part of West Vancouver so idyllic. One is immediately struck by how silent and serene it is here.

The homebuilder, Ron Osterman (who also happens to be the homeowner), and his company, Can-Rel Homes Ltd., pride themselves on bringing an old world timelessness to their projects. At Altamont Manor, Osterman took it up several notches, layering on the European-inspired details when creating this 8,038 square foot, threelevel home for his family.

The enclave of Altamont was named by John Fitzgerald Mahon of Vancouver and London, who subdivided land here in 1913, after his brother-in-laws’ courtesy title, Earl of Altamont, the eldest son of the Marquess of Sligo, and brother of his wife, Lady Alice Mahon.

deep seated comfort

Settling in for the cold weather season in a big way

Words by Michelle Hopkins

Most of us have a love affair with our lush extralarge chairs. It’s that whole lounging around or watching television ideal that has made people crave comfort, and that equates to bigger sizes. As homes became bigger and people taller, the popularity of oversized chairs and chaises quickly gained momentum. The rise of great rooms, a combination of living and family room, has also spurred on the desire for those big, cushy chairs. They often beg us to sink into them, encouraging relaxation. Oftentimes, in larger homes, they also suggest a sense of luxury.

The best part: oversized chairs look good anywhere. Working to anchor a living room, dining room and bedroom, and adding a fabulous touch of comfort in bathrooms and foyers. They are the perfect complement to the more casual lifestyle of today. What gives oversized chairs such appeal is that the seat cushions are much thicker than normal seat cushions, typically ranging from five to eight inches in thickness. Chair cushions are stuffed with down, Dacron® or foam that is available in various densities to ensure personal comfort. Depending on the frame design, cushions may be box-shaped or have softer rounded edges. Because deep seating chairs sit lower to the ground and have wider seats, it makes you feel like you are reclining. Oversized chairs are intended for relaxation and the seating and back cushions are responsible for providing most of that comfort. The list of different styles, fabrics, colours and sizes are endless, so it might be a good idea to browse photos online or thumb through magazines before heading to the store. The vast selection may make it difficult to hone in on one or two particular styles. Trending right now is a chair that is the one and a half chair – wider than a regular chair but smaller than a loveseat. Two people can cuddle up in it very comfortably or one person can plump it up with pillows and sink into it. That might well be the height of ultimate bliss!

october/november 2012

When the leaves start to turn and the temperature drops, many of us love nothing better than to cocoon in front of a roaring fire with a good book, ensconced in our favourite chair… does it get any better than that? It does if the chair is oversized and plush.

These chairs are designed with comfort in mind because they are stuffed with extra padding. When you sit down it immediately grabs you and makes you feel warm and cozy all over.
