editor’s message
Putting together a magazine is a monumental task it’s true, but it’s definitely a labour of love for all those involved. It can also be extremely fun; I mean, who wouldn’t want to spend their work day in a gorgeous multi-million dollar home with creative people, delicious food and luxuriously expensive items including jewellery that comes with its own security detail. I would. So we did just that when we shot our Living in Luxury feature for this, our Luxury Issue of Homes & Living. It’s human nature to yearn for something more than what we already have—we’re fickle creatures. Even those who already enjoy the finer things in life will dare to dream of desirable things they have yet to own or experience for themselves. So what exactly is ‘luxury’? Well, for different people this may mean different things. The dictionary defines luxury as, “a state of great comfort or elegance, especially when involving great expense.” It is also a means of indulging one’s tastes and desires and at this time of year—as we close one year and look forward to the next—what we all desire is that feeling of comfort, elegance and yes, indulgence, that is the essence of all that is luxurious. With that in mind, we’ve put together a magazine chock full of stunning homes, entertaining articles and all the bling, sparkle, comfort and joy that you covet for your shopping lists and bucket lists—enjoy! On behalf of all of us here at Homes & Living magazine, I wish you an enjoyable holiday season and a successful and luxurious New Year.
Sincerely,
Michelle van der Merwe, Editor-in-chief

Panama CITY
19
Ingredients for Luxury Located at the heart of Vancouver’s Golden Mile, the unique twisting architecture of this Arthur Erickson-designed tower will soon transform the skyline as the second tallest building in the city, with no two views alike except in their ability to impress.
With this newest addition to their Trump Hotel Collection, the next generation of Trumps continue to raise the bar on superior luxury living.
It is those spectacular views and its close proximity to nature that make Vancouver a city heavily influenced by the environment; not necessarily a place one would think of in the same thought as the Trumps. But it is exactly that—the views, the mountains, the ocean—paired with the vibrant and thriving city that is Vancouver, which makes this such an incredibly important market for the expansion of the Trump Hotel Collection (THC). Their goal? To infuse traditional elements of luxury with the culture of Vancouver and offer the most exceptional service in the city. Well, with 147 guest rooms, 218 private residences and unrivalled services offering everything for a life without compromise, this mixed-use luxury development will surely be the most sought-after destination for the fashionable elite of Vancouver and the world.

the
personal side Q&A Ivanka Trump What is one of your favourite Trump family Christmas traditions? Spending time together. We all go down to Mar-a-Lago for a few days and are so thankful for the chance to share our traditions with our own children now.
Where do you find your inspiration for life and business? My family. My father and brothers inspire me to work hard every day and be passionate about the work we’re doing. My husband and daughter are huge inspirations as well. I want to make them proud and spend my time away from them creating something truly incredible, whether it’s a building or a brand.
Would you ever consider moving your family to Canada’s west coast?
The Trump International Hotel & Tower Vancouver will offer a number of firsts for both Vancouver and for the THC, including the art of sabrage. If you’ve never experienced opening a bottle of champagne with a sabre, now you can fulfill your dream then indulge in flutes of the finest vintages at the hotel’s Champagne Bar which, along with the lavishly designed Pool Bar & Nightclub, is a first for the city. Then after an evening of indulgence you can relax and rejuvenate at the Mar-a-Lago Spa. The first in Canada, this spa brings Ivanka Trump’s vision of this timeless 1927 Palm Beach property to life in elegant style. “I will personally select the spa’s treatments and products, as well as design the spa itself,” she says. “It will be an unparalleled luxury experience.”

It certainly is beautiful! Right now, we are firmly planted in New York but you never know what the future holds. Canada is such an amazing place and I’m fortunate to visit often.
Success Built on Luxury Celebrating its 30th anniversary, Trump Tower in New York—synonymous with prestige and luxury—is truly one of the most iconic buildings in the world. “Growing up in Trump Tower was such a privilege. It’s a symbol of the entire Trump Organization and what my father has been able to build,” says Ivanka. “It’s our family’s legacy.” And continuing to build on that legacy is the next generation—Donald Jr., Ivanka and Eric—who have forged a formidable team and are bringing their father’s legendary drive and inspiration to the THC which they founded in 2007, and to the Trump Organization as a whole. “If you love what you do, and work very hard, you will ultimately succeed,” says Ivanka. It’s a lesson from her father who always taught her to be passionate; a lesson well-learned it seems by all of “The Donald’s” children as their passion for their work and family is evident in their growing success.

When I danced with the National Ballet I couldn’t wear high heels because dancers abuse their feet so much—if I did, I was in agony. Now my family takes me shopping; it’s wonderful to choose those shoes!”

I’ll get my Mom anything to do with angels, she loves that and clothes for my dog, Midi. I’d just like ROOTS socks from someone—I just love them.”

It’s incredibly waterproof, comfortable and breathable. He’s not supposed to go skiing (club rules) so he’ll wear it playing in the snow with me!” “I’m buying Ashleigh a cool handmade leather bag from Stage Presents made by our friend, an American Idol finalist, Kimberly Caldwell,” says DeMerit. “Kimberly sang at our wedding for our first dance together and made it so special.”

This is very much the case with Verdant Avenue, a magnificent new house in Melbourne, Australia, designed by Robert Mills Architect and Interior Designers. Company director Rob Mills is quick to explain that the company fully believes in collaborative work between the client and the architect. But in this case Mills was given free rein to pour his passion and his love of art and architecture into a 6,500-square-foot space that almost feels holy—like a grand, modern cathedral rather than a simple suburban house. Mills said that to create a great design it has to revolve around a single idea and then be executed faithfully. “The more that single idea is reinforced by the author, the better the chance that idea will flourish.” In Melbourne, known as “The Garden City,” nature makes itself felt everywhere—in its parks, boulevards and private gardens—so it makes sense that the central idea of the Verdant Avenue house is nature. Especially when the lot is dominated by an 80-year-old majestic pin oak tree. “We designed the house around the tree,” Mills said. “We gave it space to live and to prosper, and we focussed the house to it. Wherever you are in the house you look up into this beautiful tree.” In fact, this is the chief reason the living room is 1.5 storeys high. In the winter the tree forms a sculptural skeleton. In the summer, its lush foliage provides a gently moving canopy of shade.

“The true essence of a stair is all about movement. - Rob Mills
Architecture: Rob Mills Architects | Interior design: Rob Mills Architects | Light planning: Rob Mills Architects | Landscape architecture: Jack Merlo (Jack Merlo Design) | Photography: Trevor Mein and Jonathan Wheatley, Urban Angles Photography

The central staircase is an equally compelling focal point. It twists and circles upward in one fluid, commanding line, drawing the eye to its sculptural form. In fact, bold staircases are a hallmark of Robert Mills’ work. “We believe in art,” Mills said. “And we believe in the importance of interacting and living with art. I think it heightens your senses. Art surprises you—it’s a joy, really. So rather than a stair being a static object, the true essence of a stair is all about movement and this staircase is fluid. I think it’s shape and it’s placement in the house allows it to be what it really is: an object of movement.” The height, the space, the monochromatic colours and the serenity of the outdoor garden all conspire to make this home much more than a house and, according to Mills that was the intention.
Getting it Right . . . For You Whether the home you want is large or small, KB Design has the experience, vision and caring to bring it to life. Please call or visit our website

250.384.1550 “Of all the houses I’ve ever designed, it’s the most cathedral-like. It really has that ethereal feel. I’m not interested in suburbia so much. I’m fascinated by urban life. 13-03-12 3:13 P
And that is where the story of the house and that of Rob Mills collide. Architecture is his passion—he sees it as art, as something that not only can, but should move people—that should speak to their hearts.
“This home is trying to rise above the norm,” Mills said. He recalled what his grandfather, who was a Rhodes Scholar and a professor of law, told him when he was just going into the profession, “Architecture is all about defining space for people.” 1950B Oak Bay Ave, Victoria | ph 250.361.9243 | www.heatwave.me
december/january 2014
He said that the Verdant Avenue living room is truly special—it is dramatic, inspiring and serene. It draws people. It is as suitable for entertaining as it is for quiet contemplation. It connects to the outdoors, not only through its focus on the oak tree but also, more practically, through floor to ceiling glass walls and sliding doors that open to the garden and the 25-metre lap pool. Motorized oversize exterior window louvers provide natural light and ventilation to the entire home.

Floor Plan Index
“That’s what this house has achieved,” he said. “It really does give you space which has a truly unique quality to it. It’s not a domestic home—it’s much more than that.” Verdant Avenue was not just one man with a dream though. Mills had considerable help and input from his associate, Jay McSheffrey, and from the team at the firm.

the horizon
A West Coast-Asian infusion of architectural brilliance.
Constructed in one of Nanaimo’s most elite neighbourhoods, The Horizon brings to life the homeowners’ dream of a West Coast-inspired home that appears light and welcoming while responding contextually to its natural environment.
The lot was familiar to custom home builder TS Williams who completed another project in the neighbourhood and recognized the potential to capture views from almost every room in the house. Company owner Taran Williams played an important role in establishing a design that would meet both the homeowners’ vision and the inherent challenges of building into the rocky, ocean-facing terrain.

Rough-cut stone on the forward most façades connects the home with its rocky hillside location, while neutral vertical panelling softens the mass on the upper levels. The architecture gracefully imparts a subtle Asian influence—nested rooflines, staggered fascias and subtle curved overhangs announce the front and rear entrances. Extruding exterior beams with inverted angles meet the home’s scale while flawlessly illustrating how well the two design styles can integrate.

“We strongly believe in building homes for long-term value and durability,” says Williams. “We focus on generous overhangs to protect the home’s exterior from the elements and lots of natural light to make our homes feel warm and welcoming.” Curving rock and shrub beds, designed to require low maintenance, wind around to the back of the property where a meticulous lawn extends away from the home to an infinity view of the ocean and tiny islands in the distance. Wicker furniture is set into a sunken patio area, protected by overhead heat lamps and a fire pit that invite cozy outdoor evenings almost year round. A second ground level seating area acts as an extension of the indoor living space—an essential feature for the homeowners who wished for integrated indoor-outdoor living.

Because of the home’s location on a rocky slope, preparing the property required an extensive excavation and levelling procedure, but the results are impeccable. The view to the ocean is unimpeded by the rooflines below the property slope, and from the sunken patio, one could imagine being completely secluded at an oceanside resort.
The great room shines with abundant natural light through a double set of picture windows, situated to capture views from the main floor and from the second-floor mezzanine. A concrete cast-in-place hearth spans the feature wall where pre-fabricated concrete panels stack to house an ambient fireplace and wall-mounted television. On either side, dark walnut cabinets and floating shelves keep the aesthetic clean and simple, while glass and metal décor and flowing orchids keep it warm and approachable. Overhead, a delicate cascading light fixture was a rare and treasured find, leaving the view unobstructed from the upper floor.

The homeowners didn’t see a formal dining area as conducive to their open-concept floor plan; they opted instead for an open, intimate space and a rich wood dining set that pays tribute to the beautiful walnut hardwood flooring. Over the dining table, curved walnut panels create a seamless transition between wood tones in the great room and kitchen. On the main level, a guest bedroom opens up with light through sliding doors leading to the yard and patio. And the room’s generous size and adjacent bathroom make it perfect for a master bedroom later in the homeowners’ lives.

Porcelain tile in a swirling, marble pattern adorns the glass shower and tub surround in the master ensuite—a style chosen to exude a relaxing, spa-like appearance complemented by a picturesque view from the window over the bathtub. Facing one another, double undermount sinks and a dedicated vanity provide adequate space and a balanced appearance. And a floating bulkhead brings the ceiling down to create a sense of intimacy in the space. The children’s rooms are mirror images of one another, housing generous walk-in closets and incredible views from built-in window seats. The palette in both rooms was chosen so the children could grow up with it—warm and simple with bright pink accents. The rooms are connected by a shared bathroom where double sinks and a generous mirror ensure ease and comfort of use.

Strategically situated over the garage for frontfacing ocean views and sound proofing is a media room, where a gabled ceiling and built-in bar give the room the perfect ambiance for entertaining. And the best place to relax and take in a gorgeous sunset is the balcony that stretches out to the front of the property. The lighting scheme throughout the home was carefully selected to highlight the architectural features and throughways—inset floor uplighting and undermount LEDs cast a subtle glow in all the right places, while starburst pot lights are both practical and a lovely design feature. The homeowners, thrilled with the final results, appreciated TS Williams’ commitment to the build, having a presence at every draftspersons’ meeting and contributing practical solutions to achieving the incredible design of their dream home.

Through the ages and around the world, trees that remain green year-round have long been associated with special holidays. Originally decorated with fruit, nuts and candles they are now often works of glittering design.
A formal sitting room is the perfect room for enjoying afternoon tea or stealing a quiet moment to contemplate the beauty of a stunning Christmas tree, sparkling in the light. The warmth from the fireplace keeps winters’ chill at bay, inviting you to relax and enjoy the company of a friend or family member while nibbling delectable hors d’oeuvres; or simply escape with your favourite book before your evening’s engagements begin.

Decorating the tree has traditionally been a family affair, with excursions to choose the perfect (and biggest) tree and boxes of keepsake ornaments to hang amongst its greenery; and usually some sort of draw for who gets the unenviable task of stringing the lights. But in today’s busy world, those who have the means often hire a professional to do it for them—for absolute perfection that suits whatever holiday décor style they desire.

Stylish cufflinks designed by master craftsmen are the perfect accoutrement to a custom tailored suit or tuxedo for evenings at the club or black-tie holiday soirée’s. It’s not just the women who enjoy displaying a bit of bling and wearing a suit with the perfect cut, just the right amount of shirt cuff falling below the jacket sleeve and a discrete yet elegant piece of jewellery glinting in the light is the perfect way to make a statement. And while the gentleman of the house doesn’t require a vanity for his accessories, a contemporary nightstand provides an easily accessible home for his collection of fine Swiss timepieces; one for every day or one for every occasion, because a man who works hard generally plays hard too.

TimeTime AFTER
WORDS BY TONY WHITNEY
For those who value the finer things in life, a Swiss watch from a prestigious manufacturer is still very much a badge of success. It’s something to be worn with great pride; a subtle and elegant symbol of achievement.
Timewalker chronograph from Montblanc. Montblanc’s Timewalker chronograph has a classic look with traditional Bauhaus-inspired contours that evoke race car drivers of the ‘50s who wore watches rather like this. It’s a nicely subtle timepiece with great dial clarity and a polished stainless steel case. Like so many sports watches nowadays it’s a biggie, with a 43 mm case. Photo provided by Montblanc.
American 1921 from Vacheron Constantin. Vacheron Constantin has been producing fine, hand-crafted timepieces since 1755 and even today, each model demands countless hours of meticulous work. Their Historique collection celebrates styles across the decades and each model carries an appropriate date. The American 1921 looks back to the days when “motoring watches” were popular, with the top of the hour placed at exactly the right angle when grasping a steering wheel. Photo provided by Palladio.
The Nautilus from Patek Phillipe. Patek Phillipe is very much the benchmark when it comes to auction results for rare timepieces, but current models like the iconic Nautilus sell for less stratospheric prices. Many fine watch makers are looking back over the years for inspiration and Patek Phillipe is no exception—the original Nautilus was designed in the ‘70s. Photo provided by Brinkhaus.
Daytona from Rolex. In the world of fine sports watches the Rolex Daytona is legend. Few chronographs are more sought-after—actor Paul Newman is said to have worn one much of his life. It looks much the same as it did back in 1961 when introduced though tech upgrades have been numerous. Rose gold sets this Daytona apart, but stainless versions are equally revered. Photo provided by Brinkhaus.
The Pilot from IWC. The Pilot reflects the company’s long association with flying, dating back to before WW2, and was inspired by the fabled Spitfire fighter plane. This example, a re-creation of a watch produced in 1940, is finished in non-glare black and boasts a clear, easy-to-scan dial for efficient cockpit use. Photo provided by IWC.
Princess Grace de Monaco from Montblanc. Montblanc’s Princess Grace de Monaco ladies watch is very much about subdued elegance with its simple, diamond-accented dial and bezel, white alligator strap and understated looks. It looks right at home in a 5-star hotel lounge but is in fact very durable and water-resistant up to 150 metres. A Swiss quartz movement guarantees outstanding timekeeping and long life. Photo provided by Montblanc.
1972 from Vacheron Constantin. Vacheron Constantin’s 1972 Prestige collection features elegant asymmetrical watch cases that are reminiscent of popular styles of 40 years ago. With its ultra-thin case and very minimalist look, this ladies version features an elegance that sets it apart from rival retro designs. Perhaps best of all, it houses the superlative Vacheron Constantin hand-wound movement. Photo provided by Palladio.
Datejust Zebra from Rolex. Also from Rolex is this outstanding piece of haute horlogerie for ladies, with a multi-diamond set bezel and zebra-textured diamond dial—first shown at Baselworld, the world’s largest timepiece expo. Both bracelets and genuine crocodile straps are available and under all that glamour is a watch as tough and waterproof as any other Rolex, thanks to its Oyster case. Photo provided by Brinkhaus.

Sport DLC chronograph from Montblanc. Globally known for its fine writing instruments, Montblanc has, in recent years, been building a reputation for its watches. The fashionably black Sport DLC chronograph not only has a two-button stopwatch function, but also a rotating bezel for elapsed time settings when diving. And yes, the crown incorporates the Montblanc logo which represents the famed peak in the French Alps. Photo provided by Montblanc.

It’s an exotic oasis beyond your wildest dreams and can be described as nothing less than truly exceptional. Well, it’s not just the ideal location of Hotel Le K2 that sets it apart from the rest; it’s what you experience from the moment you walk in the front door. That’s right, complimentary! Stay in the HauteCouture Suite Chalets and you can even have your personal butler serve your drinks. After your treatment, enjoy the infinity pool, hot and cold baths, hammam, hot tub, herbal tea room and hair salon. Finally, if you feel like a little shopping you won’t even need to leave the comfort of the resort. The incredible location and extravagant and artistic conceptual design make staying there an experience you aren’t likely to forget.

Gotham’s philosophy is to source the best possible ingredients and serve it in simple timeless ways that belie its opulent décor and let the natural flavours shine through. Huge, succulent lobster tails and prime Alberta beef, dry-aged for 28 days, are classic favourites at this traditional steakhouse so they have created a splendid winter menu just for you. They’re even sharing their secret to a perfectly grilled steak. If you are looking for a luxuriously flavourful meal this winter or during the holiday season, this simple menu more than meets those requirements. pat bay
highway Named for a Princess
Over the holidays hundreds of vehicles will travel this highway; pushing northward from Victoria, across McKenzie where it’s lined by beautiful modern homes at Royal Oak, Broadmead and Christmas Hill, past Elk Lake, through the western reaches of Sidney, close to the opulent homes at Deep Cove and on to Swartz Bay. In Swart’s day, there were only horse tracks and wagon-trails across Saanich; the main access from Victoria would have been Quadra Street, the old East Road (now East Saanich Road), up to and through Saanichton and on to Sidney and Swart’s Bay. The advent of ‘motors’ turned these trails into rough country roads full of potholes and craters that became miniature lakes after a rainfall. The route made progress slow but as speed had not yet become a preoccupation, the journey was still enjoyable. Passenger ships had connected the mainland and other parts of the island since the turn of the century but in June 1930, when the Gulf Island Ferry Company’s, Cy Peck, sailed from the peninsula’s north end, it was the first ferry to depart from what’s now known as Swartz Bay. Traffic became heavier on the East Road, still the major artery from Victoria; then, in the late 1930s the Royal Canadian Air
Force built the Patricia Bay Airport and the road that led to the airport became known as Patricia Bay Road. Increasing ferry service eventually demanded improvements to Pat Bay Road so plans were made for extensions at its south end—away from Quadra and its school zones—and diversions at its mid-section and north end. Then when strikes by the Canadian Pacific and Black Ball Ferry services cut off the island from the mainland in 1958, Premier W. A. C. Bennett formed the BC Ferry Authority. On June 25, 1960, the first of these new ferries sailed from Swartz Bay to Tsawwassen; before long BC Ferries had swallowed up all the competition. The new ferry service demanded vast improvements to the Pat Bay Highway and over the ensuing years, its entire length was widened to four lanes. The old East Road became a secondary route and at Mount Newton Cross Road, the little village of Saanichton, once a bustling community clustered around a railway track on the road to Union Bay, slowly disappeared. So next time you head for the ferry, look right and left as you go—this highway has history. You’re driving through land once owned by people with names like Rogers, Rithet, Rey, Spotts, Michell, Ferguson, Reay, Brethour, Roberts, John, Armstrong and McDonald. Many of their descendants live on the peninsula to this day—along with the ghosts of a pretty princess and a man called Swart.
december/january 2014
They were so enamoured with her that they renamed Union Bay, Patricia Bay, and the road that reached it became the Patricia Bay Road. Later relocated to the east as the Patricia Bay Highway, it led to a point at the north end of the peninsula that was first settled in 1874 by an American called Lansing O. Swart.

The Fast & The Luxurious

Auto Trends and Test Drives
CRÈME DE LA CRÈME LUXURY CARS
A car may stand out from its stablemates for all kinds of reasons, which may or may not include performance, level of opulence, price tag, uniqueness or outright design originality.
Interestingly, the top end of the luxury car business has prospered mightily in recent years, weathering most of the world’s financial crises with barely a pause. Manufacturers in this rarefied segment compete intensively with one another to come up with “the next big thing” and millions are often spent on vehicles that never get beyond an auto show debut. Those that do are instant classics and unlike most other automobiles, may gain in value as the years go by.
Unsurprisingly, sports cars always seem to elbow their way to the fore in selections like this. The fact is that people who yearn for something truly outstanding and prestigious often already have a high-end luxury sedan or SUV in the garage for workaday chores. A set of exotic wheels with sporting character usually has the inside track when it comes to dream cars.
In this luxury issue we’re taking a brief look at desirable models from Rolls-Royce, Lamborghini, Ferrari, Aston Martin, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche, but there are lots of other choices out there for those with a few hundred thousand dollars to spend. As far as the future of cars like this goes, expect hybrid and electric powertrains to become increasingly prominent during the next decade or so.
It’s no easy task to pick out the crème de la crème from a manufacturer’s lineup when it features nothing but highly desirable automobiles. Nonetheless we’ve given it a try, although our picks may be controversial.

1 Porsche 911 Turbo Cabriolet
88
2 Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG
Martin 3 Aston Vanquish
Porsche’s latest offering is a turbocharged version of its 911 Cabriolet, one of the most respected and desirable sportsters anywhere. Although the basic design dates back to the 1960s, no Porsche fan would have it any other way. With its now-unconventional rear-mounted flat six engine, the 911 remains one of the finest sports cars ever built. Modern Porsches have become far more luxurious and forgiving than of old and high-technology electronics help make this a very safe car to drive fast. There’s no doubt the performance is there and the car is relatively lightweight, thus making every one of its 560 horses (S version) count. It’s hard to find more prestige per dollar.
When the design team at Mercedes-Benz first penned the new SLS AMG super sports car they surely had a 1955 300SL Gullwing sitting on the studio floor. Few automakers have recaptured the romance and legend of an earlier era as well as Mercedes has. There is a roadster version of this car, but the gullwing doors will always capture the hearts of serious Merc aficionados. Quite apart from its wonderful looks, this car is a serious performer with its 6.2 L, 563 hp AMG V8, and it handles the way it looks—ready for the track. Best of all, the SLS AMG is among the more affordable supercars out there.
Aston Martin is one of those very few automakers that seems incapable of building anything but great-looking cars. Available in coupe and convertible guise, the new Vanquish incorporates familiar Aston Martin styling but carries it a stage further. As the company’s flagship it has all the grace and beauty of its stablemates plus a little extra panache. It boasts aggressive-looking bulges and aerodynamic touches but nobody will mistake it for anything but an Aston Martin. Under the hood (or “bonnet,” as the company would say) is a 573 hp V12 of considerable refinement and performance potential. The cabin is a symphony of fine hand-stitched leather and elegant design. Aston Martin says it’s the greatest car it’s ever produced and who’s going to argue with that?

4 Rolls-Royce Wraith It’s not the most costly Rolls—the majestic Phantom earns that accolade—but the new Wraith might well be judged the most beautiful. A two-door coupe with impressively rakish lines, it’s the fastest and most luxurious automobile ever built by the fabled British automaker. Handling and response is in the sports supercar class, but despite this performance prowess and no less than 624 hp, occupants are isolated from the outside world with the V12-powered Wraith’s almost uncanny quietness and refinement. This is grand touring in the truest sense of the term.
Price tag: around $350,000.
5 Lamborghini Aventador
Anniversario
6 Ferrari LaFerrari
Lamborghini has introduced a special 50th anniversary version of its flagship Aventador called, appropriately enough, Anniversario. It celebrates the Italian automakers half century of building some of history’s most exciting sports cars. The spec sheet tells all—720 hp from a 6.5 L V12 and a zero to 100 km/h time of just 3.0 seconds or so. For the very brave, top speed is almost 350 km/h. Striking styling makes the car look like a wingless stealth fighter. And you’d better like bright yellow—the only colour the Anniversario comes in. Think of it as art rather than transportation.
Despite its rather puzzling name, the latest limited edition (500) Ferrari is bound to attract serious attention. As sleek as a sports supercar could possibly be, the LaFerrari boasts fascinating technology. By some standards it can even be called a hybrid as it uses electric motor-assist to boost the power of its potent V12 engine. This delectable creation draws on Ferrari’s Formula One experience—its electric motor uses spare energy from the braking system to charge the battery. As a hybrid, it’s a bit quicker than your uncle’s Prius, it’s said to have lapped Ferrari’s test track faster than any road car the company has ever built, and that’s fast indeed.
Price tag: $500,000 or more.

THE MAGNOLIA SPA & HOTEL AN INTERNATIONAL BEST This small luxury boutique from Victoria has been honoured as one of the ‘Top 20 Business Travel Hotels in the World’ by Condé Naste. They are #10—evidence that if you look after your clients, they will look after you. Results were tallied from a survey of 79,000 international business travellers and readers of Condé Naste Traveler. Named alongside other great hotels like Hamburg’s Fairmont Hotel Vier Jahreszeiten and Portland’s Hotel deLuxe, Victoria’s own Magnolia Spa & Hotel is the only Canadian hotel on the list. The Magnolia credits its success firstly to its desirable location in the downtown core—convenient to a number of dining locations suitable for business meetings or a short walk to the inner harbour, to get a true taste of the Victoria experience. Secondly, its traditional yet contemporary rooms make clients feel at home. This past year the hotel celebrated its 15th Anniversary and completely renovated all 64 rooms to create an elegant, sophisticated and timeless space for clients to curl up in while away from home. Finally, as a smaller hotel, the Magnolia uses its size to its advantage in providing exemplary service with attention to detail, personalized care and an above-and-beyond approach that sets them above the rest. PARC MODERN TURNS THREE
DE BEERS COMES TO CANADA
In celebration of their third birthday this year, Parc Modern is moving their young Victoria furniture company to a larger location in the Rock Bay area. With its increased traffic and space, and free parking, this new location is a promising present for the company—one that allows for further growth. With other home renovation stores like Gabriel Ross and European Flooring also situated in the vicinity, this area is becoming a great one stop shop where designers and home owners alike can find everything from furniture to cabinets to flooring.
De Beers Diamond Jewellers opened its first Canadian location this fall on Vancouver’s Alberni Street—a retail corridor which has become synonymous with luxury goods for discerning consumers.
Three years ago, Jody and David Adelman saw an opening in the Victoria furniture business for unique yet livable furnishings for smaller homes and condos. Sit, play, live—these are the words Parc Modern lives by and they are known for choosing furniture that balances function and fashion. When a customer walks into Parc Modern they are asked how they live, work and play, as the pieces being purchased need to fit their life as well as their home. Come celebrate with their present to you—36% off of everything! Parc Modern 589 Bay Street Victoria, BC 250.590.1110 1.855.828.PARC(7272) parcmodern.com
Designed by architect Christophe Carpente, principal of CAPS, this store is designed to sparkle as brightly as De Beers’ timelessly elegant wares. The exterior features engraved glass panels meant to resemble glass that has been scratched by diamonds. And a magic mirror projects a recording of a light scan diving in through the top of a diamond, showing the beam as it is split into different parts of a prism. Strategically placed to direct the flow of traffic around the store, from collection to collection, the brightly lit showcases are lacquered in glossy black on the bottom, blending into the ebony floor and giving the impression that they, and the pieces they display, are floating.
