Editor’s

message

I live in a little village, within the big city, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. One of the exceptional aspects of living here is how British Columbians embrace pastoral, while celebrating cosmopolitan. Our city is made up of a diverse array of small villages and neighbourhood enclaves. As autumn descends on Vancouver Island; we are reminded of how this multiplicity and sense of community adds to our quality of life. We don’t really retreat indoors during the colder months, do we? Instead, British Columbians embrace the weather and take up different sports and outdoor activities. However, it also becomes the perfect time to work on inside home projects and Homes & Living magazine’s ‘Embracing Autumn’ issue is all about helping you achieve that goal.

Tony Parsons is sharing his Take on the Art of Conversation [page 48] – a must read in this issue. Celebrity interior designer and H&L columnist Jeffrey Fisher casts a Moroccan spell on us, taking us to Marrakesh [page 20]; showing readers how to infuse colour and spice into this year’s home decor. On a more intimate note, if you are looking to add a little glamour to your master bedroom this season, check out H&L’s article, Glam Therapy on page 80.

UNDER A MOROCCAN SPELL

Words by Jeffrey fisher

The great thing about inspiration is that it can come from any experience and triggered when least expected. A hazy late summer sky has been known to put me into a tailspin at the paint store and even a walk through the hall of mirrors at Versailles inspired me to cover a client’s powder room entirely in mirror. Inspiration can come from the most simplistic, natural experience or the most extravagant, over the top one. Either way, along the way I’ve learned the key is to do something with those spontaneous moments of inspiration. I have also learned that it’s one thing to find inspiration and it’s another to act on it.

under a

MOROCCAN SPELL

A little over a year ago I had the sublime pleasure of visiting the Moroccan city of Marrakech. Like most of my trips it was spontaneous, without over-thinking or extensive planning and it didn’t disappoint.

My hotel, La Mamounia (mamounia.com), one of Morocco’s historical treasures, was just a short walk from the market. Ever since it opened its doors in 1923 it has been the Marrakech hotel for the rich and famous. Not surprisingly, with more than 85 years under her belt, the hotel was in need of a major restoration. Renowned international interior designer Jacques Garcia restored La Mamounia to its original glory reopening its doors in 2009. There is no way for me to properly articulate the exotic spell that washed over me the instant I walked through the Moorish arch of La Mamounia. The fairytale setting, the waft of orange blossoms and the ornate architecture was like nothing I have ever experienced before. All this before I even got to my room.

october/november 2012

Marrakech combines an old fortified city (the medina) with modern neighbourhoods and has the country’s largest traditional Berber market (souk). It was in the labyrinthine corridors of the souk where I found stalls selling hand-spun textiles, inlaid mirrors, brass lanterns, wooden chests, ceramic vases, carpets pretty much anything I could want and a few things I could do without. To say I was on sensory overload is an understatement.

21

jf

La Mamounia

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Once ushered into my suite pictured here, I needed time alone to take it all in. Layer upon layer of pattern, texture and colour had been used to create an exotic, palatial suite that was magical. I roamed from room to room in awe of every detail. My initial reaction was to wonder why we don’t live like this in Canada but realized that only skilled master craftsmen and centuries-old techniques could create this style of architecture and design. Here in Canada there has been simply no reason for our trade people to master such skills, and materials required to properly execute such intricate and costly designs aren’t readily available. Would we want such elaborate interiors? Truth told, probably not.

22

But there are sophisticated ways to infuse hints of Marrakech style into our homes without looking like we’re designing the sets for a remake of Casablanca.

TILES

24

The intricate use of tile in a Moroccan home is as common as drinking mint tea. After my short holiday in Marrakech I realize tiling my walls isn’t realistic but a powder room floor can make a real statement. The Moroccans are heavily influenced by their Islamic, Spanish and French history and each culture has left a specific imprint on not only the architecture of Morocco but the styles of tiling as well.

Item 118-42 Corbett Lighting, corbettlighting.com

LIGHTING The decorative elements that impressed me most on my trip were the Moroccan light fixtures. One of the most important things to understand about Moroccan lighting is that the actual light emitted is secondary to the ambiance it produces. Moroccan lighting takes moody, romantic lighting to a whole new level. I personally love the pierced tin fixtures that cast beautiful intricate patterns across floors, walls and ceilings.

Moroccan tea tables and leather poufs have become a mainstay in the design world of late and both add form and function to any room. A Moroccan pouf is the equivalent of an ottoman and can work as a seat, footstool or small table. Poufs are typically made of leather and come in a wide variety of dyed colours. The tea tables are light, portable and practical and look great when used in multiples in front of a sofa.

CARPETS & RUGS

26

Give me neutral coloured walls and furniture and then allow me to jazz it up with a Moroccan rug and I’m a happy man. When I was in Marrakech I went to La Porte d’Or, the oldest and most established antique shop in Marrakech Medina in the thick of the souk. It was there the rug dance began. After hours of tea drinking and learning the finer points of handmade rugs from all over the country, the bargaining began. It’s an experience that I highly recommend everyone gets to enjoy at least once in a lifetime. And the best part is they can fold and tie up a rug as small as your carry-on luggage.

Rick Hansen

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The Man, the Olympian, the Difference Maker.

28

Words by tracey drake

34 countries, 4 continents, 40,075 kilometres and that was only the start of his journey...

Twenty five years of the incomparable man in motion You only have to be in Rick Hansen’s presence for a few minutes to feel the power of his conviction and immense love for life. It is at once humbling and exhilarating. What started with a personal tragedy in 1973 has become an extraordinary story of strength, commitment, perseverance and national pride for Rick Hansen.

The Making of a Difference Maker On June 27, 1973, Rick Hansen and a friend were riding in the back of an open bed pickup truck, returning home from a fishing trip. Hit by an oncoming car, both were thrown from the vehicle, and 15 year old Rick sustained a spinal cord injury that would leave him paralyzed from the waist down. During the 1970s and 1980s, Rick completed arduous rehabilitation, took up table tennis [winning a gold medal at the Pacific Northwest Games for the Disabled] and went on be the first person with a physical disability to graduate from the University of British Columbia with a Degree in Physical Education.

Left. Rick Hansen wheeling accross Allenby Bridge in Jordan.

It is also during this period that Rick met his would-be mentor, Terry Fox – through the game of basketball - and the two became fast friends. In fact, it was Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope that inspired Rick to embark on the Man on Motion World Tour in 1985. Terry Fox was also a personal inspiration for Rick Hansen, who went on to win 19 international wheelchair marathons, the world title 4 times, 9 gold medals at the 1982 Pan American Wheelchair Games, and represented Canada at the 1984 Olympics. In 1979, 1980, and 1982, Rick Hansen was named Canada’s Disabled Athlete of the Year. After the Terry Fox Miracle of Hope run was halted due to illness, the Man In Motion Foundation sponsored the Terry Fox Exhibit at the BC Sports Hall of Fame and Museum – a lasting legacy for Rick Hansen’s mentor, benevolent champion and friend.

— Rick Hansen

To Dream the Impossible Dream The Man in Motion World Tour was a feat of epic proportion. Beginning on March 21, 1985, it took two years, two months and two days for Rick Hansen to accomplish what most of us will not accomplish in a lifetime: 40,075 kilometres, 34 countries, four continents, and $26 Million in donations – not to mention setting in motion a selfless life path that would change Rick’s life and the lives of countless others touched by this difference maker, over the course of nearly three decades. Lucky for us, it also changed a nation and how we appreciate and celebrate the ability of those with physical disability. When the tour concluded, Rick started the Rick Hansen Foundation, to find a cure for spinal cord injuries and create accessible communities. Since 1988, the Rick Hansen Foundation has turned the original $26 million raised into $252 million in investments towards spinal cord research, accessibility projects and quality of life initiatives. The Rick Hansen Foundation

is tirelessly committed, each and every day, to building a completely inclusive society, where every individual can contribute in meaningful ways to their communities. One of the foundation’s newer programs is ‘The Day of Possibilities’, an annual rallying point for Canadians to come together on May 22nd and help transform lives. Another program, the Rick Hansen School Program inspired me. I asked him how it came to be and its purpose. Rick responded with palpable passion. “Our young people are such engaged citizens that I wanted to find a way to motivate them to take the lead on building a healthy and more inclusive world. Through sharing the story of the Man In Motion World Tour, the Rick Hansen School Program highlights the need to make communities more accessible and inclusive.” Across Canada, there are more than 1,300 schools taking part in the Rick Hansen School Program. This is an exceptional gauge of the desire of Canada’s youth to be future difference makers.

Many in Motion

32

Twenty five years later, Rick Hansen continues to inspire a nation, and possibly the world. On March 21, 2010, immediately following the Vancouver Paralympic Winter Games, the 25th Anniversary Man In Motion Tour began. Many in motion joined Rick and his team as they celebrated 25 years of accomplishment while charting a new vision for the future. Starting on August 24, 2011 and ending in Vancouver on May 22, 2012, the 25th Anniversary cross-Canada relay spanned 12,000 kilometres, visited 600 Canadian communities and celebrated 7,000 Canadian difference makers who are making a difference in their communities.

During the original Man In Motion tour, Rick averaged 30,000 strokes a day – overcoming rough roads, bad weather, sickness and injury.

Rick Hansen has worked tirelessly to create awareness for those with a physical disability, and also to raise funds for spinal cord injury research. What drives him is simple and his goal has never faltered: the hope that one day, medicine and science will come together to find a cure for spinal cord injury and to create a country where inclusion is the rule, rather than the exception.

“It would be great to be remembered as someone whose leadership and collaboration with people around the world contributed to finding the cure for spinal cord injury – I don’t know how long it will take, but I know we’ll get there. Ultimately, I hope to be remembered as someone who inspired others to harness their passion and make a difference in the world.”

The

Personal Side Q&A: How do the people of British Columbia inspire you? “I’m a proud British Columbian – born and raised here. I’m inspired by the passion, commitment and hardworking nature of British Columbians; along with their devotion to family and community. Over the last 25 years, I’ve had the unique privilege of meeting so many British Columbians, and Canadians, dedicated to creating healthier, more inclusive communities. I’m particularly inspired by our young people and their incredible competency and ability to juggle and balance many priorities including taking time to contribute to making the world a better place. The ingenuity of their responses, as well as the scope of their commitment to local, provincial, national and global causes makes me realize that our future is largely being driven by our youth. They inspire me to set the bar higher and to create a global network of difference makers.”

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Where does the Hansen family love to vacation in British Columbia?

34

“There are so many great vacation spots in BC, but I’d have to say one of our favourites is our family cabin near Galiano Island. The cabin is very private and only accessible by boat – it’s like our little retreat. Some of my most precious memories are from our time spent at the cabin – fishing, boating and spending quality time, away from the distractions of our everyday lives.”

ACTS OF KINDNESS

During the original Man In Motion World Tour (1985-1987), Rick received the following from well-wishers along the way: • • • • • • • •

200,007 letters 1,091 baseball caps 277 t-shirts 234 plaques 128 sweatshirts 113 pennants 73 toys 47 flags

In your opinion, as a British Columbian, what are the best aspects of raising a family here? “We live in one of the most beautiful places in the world! Growing up in Williams Lake gave me a great appreciation for nature and the outdoors. As a result, this has always been a big part of my life. We are so lucky to live in a province where both the mountains and ocean are literally in our backyard – these surroundings really help to cultivate a healthy, active lifestyle. My wife, Amanda and I chose to raise our family here because of its diversity and close proximity to nature. British Columbia is a mosaic of cultures, which in turn, creates a global community. We wanted our children to grow up learning the value of hard work, finding their place in a global society and pursuing a healthy and meaningful life where they can make a difference and pay it forward.”

Hearth and Home

shake the effects of the gloomy months

A bright, white kitchen is most appreciated during the dreary winter months.

Hearth &

home The one common fact about living in a great country like Canada is that we all share the winter season. Whether you’re up to your knees in snow or deluged with drizzle, the bleak, sunless days of winter remind us of the importance of making our interior spaces warm and cheery. Creating light and energy in our environments is key to helping us shake off the effects of Canada’s dreary winter months.

Family Plan

The three key elements the couple was looking for were function, comfort and warmth. They also wanted to preserve the turn-of-thecentury Edwardian style but add a modern twist. The clean and simple wide-rail, shaker-style cabinetry, in Benjamin Moore’s Oxford white paint, defines the style. Continuing the dark oak hardwood flooring, used throughout the rest of the house, into the new kitchen, seamlessly connects the space to the adjacent family room and adds a ton of warmth to the area.

october/november 2012

It was with this in mind that Stephan and Anna Maria embarked on a major kitchen renovation in their 30’s era home. Dark, cramped and too small for their growing family, their existing kitchen certainly wasn’t suited for entertaining. A plan was devised to extend the existing kitchen with an addition that would double its size to include a large island, a floor-to-ceiling pantry and beverage centre, a comfy breakfast nook and, the piece de resistance, a lounge area with modern fireplace.

37

gather together

The warmth of hardwood floors underfoot is a treat for feet on chilly winter mornings and lends classic good looks to a modern kitchen.

An elegant granite-topped island that seats four comfortably for family meals is the perfect place for guests to gather on special occasions.

Hub of the House A large entertainment-friendly central island with a stunning granite countertop encourages family and friends to gather in the new kitchen at the back of the house. The original back wall of the house was removed to open the kitchen up into the living and dining rooms towards the front of the house. Glazed garden doors maximize natural light letting the sun stream in and offer convenient access from the kitchen to the back deck and garden views.

Warm Up To Colour

38

To warm up the cool feel of the large, all-white kitchen the walls are painted a warm, deep gray with Benjamin Moore’s Kendal Charcoal, a colour drawn from the island’s granite top. This colour adds depth to the room and balances the white cabinets. The rich patterning of the countertop adds movement and texture to the space. More texture is added to the backsplash that features thin marble tiles laid in a random horizontal pattern to create interest at eye level.

Stainless steel pull-out with swivel shelving provides valuable storage.

Inset at just the right height to warm up the seating area, the rectangular gas fireplace is the jewel of this open-concept space.

Family Dining A dining area that seats 4 to 6 comfortably is a wonderful addition to this kitchen. To save space and add interest, the seating around the rectangular dark oak table includes chairs on one side and a cushioned bench seat built in between the two floor-to-ceiling cabinets. This convenient nook is a great place to cozy up for informal family dining or to curl up on chilly weekend mornings with a hot java and the newspaper.

Gather Round the Fire

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Last but not least, what makes this kitchen special is the adjacent sitting area that features a modern inset gas fireplace, an element the clients really wanted to incorporate into their large family kitchen. This small lounge area with two modern chairs flanking the fireplace is shared by the living room on the opposite side making this a favorite gathering place when entertaining. The fireplace with its granite surround that matches the island countertop, designed to connect the two spaces, draws attention making it a welcomed focal point in the house.

40

By choosing rich colours like mid-gray, taupe and warm white you can achieve a look that’s cool in summer and warm in winter. This palette is the perfect backdrop for any trendy or favourite accent colour you want to introduce. And don’t forget the best element that’s sure to warm up any décor – family and friends!

A rectangular table with inset bench seating and upholstered chairs seats six to eight for formal dining.

H&L’s Epicure

Autumn Inspiration: A different take on classic comfort foods

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Inspiration in the kitchen is never something I am short on. I have the pleasure of working regularly with the profoundly talented Chef John Waller, whom I am constantly stealing ideas, recipes, and occasionally bites from. Recently I had a rare opportunity to tag along with Chef Waller on one of his famous forages to our local farmer’s market. He was in search of inspiration and was taking me to the source. The impetus for our outing was an event at Chef Waller’s restaurant to celebrate the local fall harvest. It wasn’t long before a menu took shape. Fresh gala apples, crisp and tart, welcomed us to the market with their polished ruby perfection. Apple butter would be their fate, the perfect companion for John’s retro tin can Irish soda bread. Next, we found fresh English pea pods that stirred memories of my childhood in Auntie Eileen’s backyard. Alongside we spotted floppy topped baby rainbow carrots, dark soil still clinging to their colourful skins. The classic duo of veggies would become the base of an autumn inspired crispy cast iron chicken topped with an Indian summer inspired sweet and sour gooseberry relish. On our way to the checkout, basket overflowing with produce, we came across a pint of irresistible BC blackberries, bursting to the touch with vibrant violet juice; the perfect garnish for a sweet and simple petit pot du crème.

Autumn on the West Coast is full of rediscovered comforts just waiting to inspire your inner chef. Let your ingredients take you back to tractor rides through the orchard, blackberries from the backyard brambles, and pea pod raids at the end of September. A trip to the local market, or even just a trip to your local bistro, can be just the spark you need for your own home cooked creations. Perhaps, with a little help from Chef Waller, you will inspire someone yourself!

In a medium bowl, whisk together egg and sugar. In a separate pot, bring cream and milk to a simmer. Add vanilla to the simmering cream and milk. Temper egg mixture; add slowly into the cream and milk. Pour into desired container, a 4 ounce ramekin is ideal, and cover tightly with foil. Bake in a water bath until set, 40 – 50 minutes. tony’s take

on the Art of Conversation...

tony parsons broadcaster

Born in England in 1939, Tony came to Canada as a 10 year old boy. Originally wanting to be a lawyer, Tony was persuaded to become a broadcaster, and after decades of broadcasting in radio and television across Canada, Tony now works for CHEK and CBC Vancouver.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

I had a real conversation a while ago.

48

Well, two in fact - both of them in situations that make exchanges between two people easy and pleasurable. Old friends sitting down over lunch or, in the other case, a beer after a round of golf in Kelowna. In both instances they were encounters following a long period of not seeing either one of my friends. Nino had become almost estranged from a group of friends we both share. I missed him. So I called to bring him back into the fold as it were. And of course we had a lot to tell each other. And a lot to ask. What was he doing now? How did he spend his time now that he was all but retired? How was his family? You know, the kind of chat that follows the sudden realization that someone has been missing from your life for far too long. Now, because we both reached out, we’re semiregular lunch companions again. And happier. And we always seem to have something to talk about. In Brian’s case it was two old buddies simply “catching up.” But the point is we were talking, face to face. No emails, although I’m sure they both can and do. No tweets, no twitters. Conversation the way it used to be as in Sunday dinners around the family table; just a natural exchange of information. Nothing that would change the world. Words flying every which way in a fun and easy fashion. What I’m getting at here is the art of conversation!

tony’s take

on the Art of Conversation...

Like so many others, I fear for its survival in a world of iPhones, Facebook, LinkedIn, BlackBerrys, iPads, e-mails and all that other paraphernalia that litters our lives.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

They are useful devices, of course; they have their place but they are slowly stealing our conversational skills. It may well be a generational phenomenon. You don’t see many people my age hammering away at the keyboard of the latest, leading edge piece of communications knick-knackery. We just do enough so as not to get left behind. Not quite Luddites but never in the forefront. We can sit down and comfortably enjoy the challenge of actually putting sentences and ideas together, firing them across the table, in a verbal ping pong game. Or simply enjoy an hour or so of someone’s company without having to jam an idea into a one-hundred and forty character electronic box. I’ve done that, by the way, and it’s not that easy.

50

One also wonders about the erosion of people’s ability to listen or at least be given a chance to listen, in a world fraught with change and, in some cases, exclusion. In a damned if you do, damned if you don’t, situation, a lot of people are left on the electronic sidelines watching without participating, shouting out “choose me, choose me” to no response. Perhaps they are the people who are keeping conversational skills alive simply because they have no choice to revert to the old, traditional, methods of communication, moving your lips instead of your fingertips.

on the Art of Conversation...

“It has become appallingly obvious that our technology has exceeded our humanity.” — Albert Einstein

HLMAGAZINE.COM

What next we must wonder. That newfangled ‘video chat’ technology is amusing, isn’t it?

52

We used to think about what it would be like to speak to, and see, at the same time, a friend sojourning in a distant province in China or a bustling suburb in Vancouver or New York. Now we know. It’s a useful development if you are in the news-gathering world as I am. But the herky-jerky, out of synch images hurt my eyes. But, mark my words, in its refined state, which will surely come, it will be hailed as the greatest invention since sliced bread. And we have more technology to test our minds and our bank balances. We will also have another infringement on the pleasure of pure and simple conversation. Alas, what Simon and Garfunkel once lamented in their super-hit song “Sounds of Silence” might well come true. Remember the words? “People talking without speaking, people hearing without listening!”

Through the Window: Dressing up your view on the world

Provenance® Woven Wood shades from Hunter Douglas are created from natural woods, reeds, bamboo and grasses and will age beautifully in your home.

Words by Jill Lang

window Dressing up your view on the world Last summer I lived in a spacious top-floor apartment overlooking Kits beach in Vancouver. I kept the bent, rickety aluminum blinds tucked to the top of the frame to soak up the 24/7 views, but I’m sure some charcoal sheers would have framed the picture of West Vancouver, Stanley Park, the West End, downtown, English Bay, Kits beach and the ocean splendidly. Imagine a corner suite in that building…

My latest apartment has lots of white, open space and big windows in each room, but despite all the lovely daylight, I never thought I’d be so happy to see vertical shades, which are neither elegant nor elaborate but necessary and convenient. I haven’t lived in a home with luxurious window treatments since 1996, but I remain optimistic because the most beautiful thing about the artful home is you can have fun with everything—even your window coverings.

october/november 2012

Now imagine a corner suite that overlooks a courthouse, a police station and a big brick utilities building that resembles a concrete whale. I have no problem with the functioning of any of these buildings, but I’d rather be staring at trees, grass and mountains, or the picture of Vancouver lights from last summer. I’m grateful when I get to shut the shades on Henry the Whale and practice yoga in solitude, though I wonder: would I appreciate my view more if I had shades that complemented Henry? The beige Berber fabric offers more in the way of convenience than it does in the way of art.

Draperies that demand attention, like art, should be treated as an investment

56

I was first introduced to roll-down blinds back in fall 2004, during an overnight stay at my aunt and uncle’s house out in Saanichton. Large east-facing windows let in lots of natural light and showcased views of Mount Baker, Haro Straight and the San Juan Islands, but unfortunately left little hidden on the inside. Roll-down blinds are ingenious because they thwart peeping toms and offer alternating views, and some even provide a second layer of insulation. As we begin to lose the heat of the summer sun, consider updating window fashion to include modern versions of the roll-down option from the Hunter Douglas collection. I feel like I’m always saying “options are truly endless” but it’s true, especially in home design. If you have money to spend and want draperies that demand attention, full window treatments—curtains, valances and cornices— in silk, velvet or heavy cotton - drape as beautifully around the window as they do the body. You’ll find that you barely need to embellish luxurious window treatments because they add glamour and warmth to a room without overdoing it. Drapery seems to be one of the more challenging areas of home design, and like art, should be treated as an investment. If you’re using luxurious fabrics, cutting corners will show.

Through the Window: Dressing up your view on the world

On the West Coast, especially during our broody fall season, the best artwork in the world is right outside our windows. Frame it well.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

For earthy types, or someone predisposed to a laid back coastal sensibility, natural woven shades in wood or breezy linen maintain privacy while diffused light pours in through the home. Rattan and bamboo continue to grow in popularity because they can be dressed up and dressed down. Standalone, they offer a clean and cozy look, while layered under curtain panels these natural materials add depth, contrast and comfort, particularly during the fall.

58

The most beautiful thing about the artful home is you can have fun with everything, including window treatments

For those on a budget, flat designer sheets of Egyptian cotton and interesting tablecloths are cheaper than drapery panels, and can deliver the same ‘wow’ factor. Readymade, store bought drapes and sheers can also be customized and embellished. Or get adventurous by using simple, unique fabric panels with rods and ring clips. For those interested in a more relaxed and comfortable approach to decorating, classic Roman shades never go out of style, and work flawlessly in almost any setting, adding a touch of softness without being fussy. Interesting. I feel as though, between Henry and me, I’m the fussier one. I’m probably fussy because it’s fall, so in the vein of softening, I will think of Henry’s window as the heart chakra of my home; the vital link between the interior and the exterior. That window (like the heart chakra of my body) must remain loving and open, even when I practice yoga.

Natural Elegance in the Wilderness vancouver island, british columbia

As creative, inspiring, and playful as the people who live there, Cedar Retreat is a gem in the wilderness—its angular lines and robust finishes connecting flawlessly with the natural environment overlooking the ocean in the community of Cedar. The 2,900 square foot home is tucked below a country road with a beautifully landscaped hillside as a back drop and below, the land, boulders, and native plants seem to tumble to the beach. From the water the home appears perched in the wilderness—an extension of the rock, trees, and coastal magnificence. Victoria-based Coastal Construction is a full-service, custom home builder with a solid reputation for bringing dreams to life in the high-end residential market. First class service and a fresh eye for design made the company a clear choice as builder for this incredible property, but even more compelling was their flexibility and experience.

Because the homeowners were based in Calgary, coordinating the build was a process that required extra care and planning. Meetings were often held over the phone and many interior design decisions were made through email. Over the years, Coastal Construction has developed a system that specializes in building projects for out-of-town clients that streamlines the flow of information. “Our past experience in this helped us walk them through the process in a way where they still felt part of the process and in control of the daily happenings at the site,” says Sharoun. The journey through Cedar Retreat begins at stone-clad pillars and a metal gate that announces the home, which sits just beyond a detached two-car garage clad in cedar with black panelled doors.

october/november 2012

Adriana Sharoun, interior designer and project assistant for Coastal Construction, says homeowners Barb and Jim spent many years searching municipalities around Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland for the perfect place to build their dream home. “Once they fell in love with this one, capturing its beauty was the biggest vision,” she says.

Truly a slice of heaven, a quiet oasis, a retreat from our busy lives.

Project manager Harri Hovatta says excavation of the site exposed a vein of sandstone that required blasting and resulted in some substantial boulders. “[These were] stored on site with the intention of being utilized in the landscaping for retention purposes, which allowed us to integrate into the foreshore cliff with indigenous material.” A retaining wall planned for the street side of the property was relocated in an effort to provide the impression of a light, open front entry. The change required “considerable excavation and stabilizing of the slope to allow construction of the now massive structure,” says Hovatta. “Gently sloped landscaping against the wall helps conceal the bulk of the structure.”

Staggered façades of cedar siding and stone cladding stack against one another horizontally and vertically, creating a dynamic, multi-dimensional surface from every view. Working with the large quantity of full bed stone was a significant challenge, says project manager Harri Hovatta. “It required considerable engineering to address the weight, but also for the application technique to allow the rain screen system to function as required without drawing attention to elements like venting and structural support,” he says.

A unique rock was turned into a gently flowing fountain that greets visitors at the entrance. Horizontal, frosted glass panels set into the solid fir door soften its appearance and mimic the surrounding stone work. Just steps inside, recycled glass pebbles are set into the polished concrete floor in custom cut lines that help define the entry within the open plan, and mimic the exterior pathway. It is the first of many clear but subtle connections to the outdoors that inspired the interior palette— regional stone, Douglas fir cabinetry, doors, casings and moss-toned walls—and the size and placement of the windows.

The inspiration was to create a timeless, comfortable home that reflects qualities of a slower paced era. Huge picturesque glazing envelops the kitchen, boasting an incredible view of the ocean and islands beyond, including a rock island just off shore where seals come to sunbathe and bald eagles, herons, and gulls swoop overhead. The two-level kitchen island features greenish taupe granite on the main level, and a honed black granite on the pop-up side. The base is painted in the soft green colour also found on the walls where it, along with shiny glass tiles, creates a soothing backdrop for custom Douglas fir cabinetry. For inspiration and interest, four feature doors in the cabinetry are made of resin panels encasing natural reeds. Cylindrical pendant lights with bubbled surfaces are stylish and eye-catching overhead. Stainless steel appliances create sleek, clean lines, and a full-sized pantry allowed the design to eliminate upper cabinets, creating more room for generous windows. The glazing extends across the back wall of the adjacent dining area, allowing beautiful streams of natural light across the room. A vibrant, swirling landscape painting of Ucluelet, created by artist Nicholas Bott, splashes colour and drama above a dark wood sideboard. This, along with a Bott painting of Banff in the hallway captures the beauty of BC and Alberta—the homeowners’ two favourite places.

The great room was created as an inviting place to relax and enjoy the view. It features a grand vertical scale and wrap-around, fullheight windows. The centrepiece—a fireplace set into floor-toceiling stone work—features a hearth made from an incredible piece of live edge stone and a mantle created from a piece of live edge maple from the site. The hues come together in this room—beige and grey tones in the rocks blend with natural wood finishes and logs stacked by the hearth. Olive green, beige, off-white and taupe earth tones pull it all together in a beautiful floral rug.

october/november 2012

Another of the couple’s design objectives was casual entertaining. “They are very warm and inviting people,” says Sharoun. “To meet them once is to become instant friends, so they enjoy extending their home to others. In that they wanted everything to feel comfortable to others, so you feel at home.”

65

Beyond the great room is the den; a sheltered, quiet place for curling up in front of yet another fireplace. The homeowners didn’t want the TV to overwhelm the space, so Coastal Construction created a custom fir cabinet with folding, slide-away doors.

The proximity of the windows to the landscaped exterior meant the garden had to be particularly engaging in this area. A beautiful West Coast grove of ferns, maples, and dry riverbeds rises and falls with the landscape, and the rock fountain near the entrance can be heard through an open window.

On the far, custom fir shelving showcases an eclectic mix of books, mementos and decorative treasures. Included are several pieces from Jim’s bottle collection—a lifetime of coloured glass in all sizes and shapes, that started with pieces Jim’s father excavated from construction sites when Jim was a boy.

Another floral rug in inverse tones of taupe, green and beige pulls this room together, while matching upholstered chairs with brighter earth tones – cranberry, burned orange, sea blue – flank the fire place with a playful edge. Down the hall, taupe textured Maple tree wallpaper in the powder room appears like a misty morning treescape. A rough cut rock vessel sink and raw Arbutus framed mirror create a stunning natural contrast with the sleek fir vanity. Baskets create extra storage beneath, and a glass shelf lightens the look.

The shower in the guest bathroom is enclosed with a single tempered pane of glass, keeping the room open and airy. A three-inch deep fir shelving unit is a lovely display for more of Jim’s bottle collection, and a mirror takes up the remainder of the back wall. An unusual and beautiful accent is a series of tiles made from seashells and recycled glass, used as a backsplash. An undermount sink set into the quartz counter is beautiful over custom fir cabinets.

Stairs to the upper level are made of Doussie—an exotic cherry— and a glass rail set into a fir banister leads the way past enormous windows over the platform. A cascading pendant light fixture over the stairs is a custom design created to look fabulous from every angle.

Our point exactly. See art in a space that makes you feel at home.

In the master suite, floor to ceiling windows ensure a beautiful awakening every morning. The windows curve back expanding the space and connecting with an unbeatable view that is particularly stunning during a full moon. Black distressed leather chairs and leather stools create a beautiful seating area at the window without obscuring the view. Full height fir panelling back drops a gas fireplace that was raised to bed level for cozy evenings.

In the first guest room, dark Arts & Crafts style side tables and dresser create a lively contrast against the white and sage coloured bedding, and in the second, two single beds in a serene neutral palette offer ample space to welcome visitors. At the end of the hall a laundry space with multi-levelled granite counter tops, fir cabinets and generous glazing, is a functional and beautiful space.

A tile mosaic runs down the wall of the glass enclosed steam shower along the floor past matching vanities, and up the side of the tub surround. The vanities on either side of the room feature white limestone sink aprons and custom fir towel shelving that reach to the ceiling. At the end of the room, wrap around windows create a wide spanning view of the ocean and island from a generous tub with stylish bevelled edges. Cedar Retreat uses efficient fixtures and low-VOC finishes, and reused many materials from the site, adding eco-friendly touches wherever possible. “Heating is provided by a propane boiler and radiant floor system, which incorporates a vacation mode to maintain freeze protection,” says Hovatta. “A concrete topping upstairs and slab on grade on the main floor does provide some passive solar benefits.”

Outdoor living spaces at Cedar Retreat were an important part of the design. Huge patio doors connect the realms and encourage flow between the spaces. A sheltered outdoor kitchen area with a fire pit and expansive patio space for double dining tables and multiple lounge chairs is the perfect place to entertain neighbours or relax on quiet evenings.

“The design process and building should be a really enjoyable experience, because chances are you’re only going to do this once so you should enjoy the journey,” says Sharoun. “We really believe it should be fun—these clients were the epitome of fun!—and made the entire process enjoyable.” “When it came time to move in they hadn’t visited the site since the drywall stage,” she adds. “Seeing their reaction and the smiles on their faces… that was a very proud moment for all of us.”

Settling in for the cold weather season in a big way

Words by Michelle Hopkins

Most of us have a love affair with our lush extralarge chairs. It’s that whole lounging around or watching television ideal that has made people crave comfort, and that equates to bigger sizes. As homes became bigger and people taller, the popularity of oversized chairs and chaises quickly gained momentum. The rise of great rooms, a combination of living and family room, has also spurred on the desire for those big, cushy chairs. They often beg us to sink into them, encouraging relaxation. Oftentimes, in larger homes, they also suggest a sense of luxury.

The best part: oversized chairs look good anywhere. Working to anchor a living room, dining room and bedroom, and adding a fabulous touch of comfort in bathrooms and foyers. They are the perfect complement to the more casual lifestyle of today. What gives oversized chairs such appeal is that the seat cushions are much thicker than normal seat cushions, typically ranging from five to eight inches in thickness. Chair cushions are stuffed with down, Dacron® or foam that is available in various densities to ensure personal comfort. Depending on the frame design, cushions may be box-shaped or have softer rounded edges. Because deep seating chairs sit lower to the ground and have wider seats, it makes you feel like you are reclining. Oversized chairs are intended for relaxation and the seating and back cushions are responsible for providing most of that comfort. The list of different styles, fabrics, colours and sizes are endless, so it might be a good idea to browse photos online or thumb through magazines before heading to the store. The vast selection may make it difficult to hone in on one or two particular styles. Trending right now is a chair that is the one and a half chair – wider than a regular chair but smaller than a loveseat. Two people can cuddle up in it very comfortably or one person can plump it up with pillows and sink into it. That might well be the height of ultimate bliss!

october/november 2012

When the leaves start to turn and the temperature drops, many of us love nothing better than to cocoon in front of a roaring fire with a good book, ensconced in our favourite chair… does it get any better than that? It does if the chair is oversized and plush.

These chairs are designed with comfort in mind because they are stuffed with extra padding. When you sit down it immediately grabs you and makes you feel warm and cozy all over.

75

Be sure the style you choose fits into the rest of the room’s décor. Neutral shades are best because oversized chairs tend to be one of the most expensive pieces of furniture to buy. Because you will probably have it for years to come, neutral tones are more enduring. For that pop of colour simply add throw cushions in bold patterns and colours, these can be easily changed over time or over the seasons for a fresh new look.

Chaise Lounge. There is something about this iconic chair that exudes retreat, luxury and comfort. A chaise lounge is a onearmed sofa, featuring a low back, half back or no back at all.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Combining the coziness of a sofa with the relaxing traits of a bed, a chaise lounge allows people to kick back after a long day and get comfortable, whether it’s in the heart of a living room, den or bedroom. Don’t be afraid to kick back and put your feet up – that’s what they were designed for.

76

For reading, make sure the back is high enough so that your shoulders can be supported and that it’s wide enough to accommodate your whole body. Chaise lounges come in vintage, traditional, contemporary and ultra modern. If your décor is more towards the timeless shabby chic style, the vintage chaise loungers can add effortless elegance to your room. You don’t have to search far for the perfect chaise, there are reproductions or originals available at antique stores, furniture shops and flea markets.

history of the chaise lounge In the 1930s, Hollywood starlets Jean Harlow, Gloria Swanson and Greta Garbo seductively draped themselves across chaise lounges for photos. However, this symbol of wealth actually dates back to ancient Egypt. A few centuries later, Greek artists painted gods and goddesses lounging on what appear to be chaise lounges. It was the French, who designed the chaise lounge that is still popular today. Its moniker comes from the French idiom ‘chaise longe’, which simply means long chair.

Vintage chic...

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The main differences between modern chairs and the elegant vintage chic ones is the latter are smaller, less comfortable, used more natural materials and were individually crafted. Typical vintage chic chairs and chaises often look good, but they are not very comfortable. Modern oversize chairs are constructed to provide comfort with better springs and wrapping.

or modern? In addition to being indoor furniture, you will often see oversized chairs and chaises being used outdoors as well. As with indoor furniture, outdoor chairs can be made of a wide range of material - the most popular are wicker and rain resistant materials. Similar to various sofa styles, there are coordinating oversize chairs and chaises to go with different styles. In the end, choosing between an oversized chair and a chaise lounge really depends on function and aesthetics, determining where and in what way you will use it, and how you want it to look in your home or outdoor space.

october/november 2012

Today’s modern furniture embodies the latest technologies and a variety of different finishes from metals to plastics to aviation strength upholsteries and more. That means they are larger in scale and more comfortable. Modern chaise lounges are filled with foam and fillings that make them far more comfortable than their predecessors. Manufacturers have realized that many people living in condos and homes with smaller rooms also like oversized chairs, but find it difficult to fit them in. So they are making slightly smaller chaises and chairs that fit into smaller rooms.

Escape to the master bedroom

80

Words by Jessica Krippendorf

Good news! Emerging trends for the master bedroom is soft, seductive decor infused with glamour and class. Abundant use of luxurious materials and exotic objects create peaceful, elegant, spa-like retreats where people can go to close out the stress of the day and wrap themselves in comfort.

These spaces are also creative and personal, innovating on trends of the 1930’s and 1940’s when soft hues, shimmering gold and silver, and rich accents extolled the virtues of high-end, untouchable spaces. While the upscale ambiance remains, the new trend is inviting, enveloping and warm. Muted, hues of soft grey, sensual lavender, calming blue and decadent cream are layered in plush, inviting

These rooms are an à la carte menu of sensory delights— glamorous textiles include natural furs, brocade, and velvet paired with furniture and accessories in rich leathers, wood, marble and specialty stone. Arts & Crafts or Shabby Chic style pieces stained white or cream and distressed in a deeper shade are the perfect pieces for achieving the look. Glass, mirrors and shiny metal sparkle and shine with elegance—crystal, glass and even high-shine plastic for door knobs, pulls and frames are delightful finishing touches that make the eye linger in essential places.

Because glazing is vital to an open, airy space, preserving the view and connection to the outdoors will enhance the space, proportion and ambiance in the space. Mixing sheer window treatments with heavier pieces for privacy is the ultimate in dynamic and functional. A beautiful trends is floor to ceiling drapes in heavy linen or velvet (if the scale is right) with a shimmering sheer in gold or silver between them.

textures. Gold and silver accessories and décor, finishes and wall coverings, are symbolic of prosperity and success without being pretentious. Against a monochromatic colour scheme, they offer a shimmer or sparkle in just the right places, layering beautifully with the creamy palette and the occasional rich accent.

81

An adapted version of the Art Deco style of the 1930’s is another emerging trend for bedroom design. Crisp architectural lines, sleek, streamlined furniture, and soft fabrics combine with exotic woods and natural elements to create interesting spaces with personality. Geometric artwork—key to this era of design—is back with a less intrusive, more complementary flourish. In this, beads, chandelier pendants, mirrors and metallic wall paper add a subtle shimmer to rich, elegant spaces.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Decorating in black and white, or deeply contrasting hues of almost any colour—mahogany and cream, navy and pearl—creates a meaningful and dramatic image of the ups and downs of daily life. While large representations of this trend were more common in the Art Deco period, smaller infusions—pillows, throws, rugs, or fixtures—can meaningfully ground a space.

82

The key to a successful space is cohesion—each element should illustrate the glamour retreat aesthetic, but the individual pieces are often an eclectic mix of furniture and décor styles. This is a brilliant design style for anyone in love with antiques or with talent and aptitude for rejuvenating older pieces with washed and distressed finishes.

october/november 2012

Classic head boards, vanities, and bureaus are also making way for non-traditional bedroom furniture like chaise lounges, arm chairs and mini-sofas, proving that the bedroom is more than a place to sleep. Many—especially if they have a view—offer a small reading or gazing area by the window or fireplace that invites lingering, relaxing and retiring early in cozy, but luxurious comfort.

83

Combine gold and silver with luxurious fabrics, fur and leather, but try to pick one or the other for the space. Use them subtly—picture frames, door knobs, and candle holders—or abundantly—window treatments, bedding, or furniture— but spread your shimmer evenly throughout the room.

monochrome prints

Monochromatic colour schemes are perfect for creating upscale, dreamy spaces with personality. Vary textures and patterns to add drama and interest, and don’t be afraid to explore large print, mural, or even textures wall coverings to make the most of this technique.

The crisp breezes of fall nudge us out of the summer sun and into the comfort of our homes where we spend several long months hibernating from the broody West Coast weather. Our days inside cause us to scrutinize our surroundings, and we set out on a fall mission to create a cozy haven to ease us through the chilly days. The intimate space in our home becomes our greatest cold weather companion, and even with a fire heating our homes, we yearn for a deeper level of warmth. Airy summer fabrics are replaced with richly coloured, lush, heavy ones. Contrasting weights and textures of fabrics on windows, pillows and throw blankets, bring a welcoming depth to a space, working to cocoon us in a sedating fall comfort.

Fabrics that work particularly well in creating the ideal interior climate include velvet, chenille and mohair.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Try pairing chenille pillows and a Scottish mohair throw blanket over the back of a sofa. Rearrange furniture so pieces face one another uniting a room and creating a sense of intimacy that encourages interaction. A set of floor length velvet curtains will introduce an elegant and traditional air to a space; the weight of the velvet working double duty to make the room feel snug and cozy. As a final touch, introduce fall scented candles into your home decor – vanilla, cinnamon and spiced apple are wonderful options to complete your perfect autumn home hideaway.

Words by ben vorst

Incorporating a fireplace into your dream living space can be a tricky business: we all want the serene presence of a welcoming fire, but are unsure how to prevent from dominating a clean open-space design; how to keep the ethereal warmth without ending up with the tired old cabin atmosphere?

Modern design concepts can help, especially in the understated and relaxed atmosphere of West Coast interiors. Consider breaking from traditional installation options to achieve the best of both worlds.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Fireplaces and hearths are as old as settled human living; they have always been the focal point of our shared spaces, gathering us for purposes as varied as shared meals, family bonding and spiritual practices. Their traditional centrality in the story of our existence is mirrored in their structural presence: monolithic and solid, they are often the last thing standing when the rest of our buildings fall away or are torn down.

88

Main photo and top right. WMFE2 - Square Wall Mount. This vent free ethanol fireplace has a linear stainless steel burner with slim profile flame diverter. Contemporary glass fender comes standard. As much as we have counted on fireplaces to provide a metaphoric heart, modern urban living is not as amenable to such an overshadowing presence. An anchor can define a space, for better or worse, and creating free-flowing spaces means redefining the role of this old standby. The first thing to do when planning your fireplace installation is to imagine how it will play its part in the overall design; increasingly, homeowners are attracted to less focal placements. Setting it completely flush and inset – as part of the wall – maintains the lines and flow of any given living room, and can be done easily with adequate planning. This option works especially well with homes that emphasize mounted art and display walls, as it transforms the flaming tableau into another art piece, a dynamic one that nonetheless benefits from familiarity. If your living room is expansive, and especially if it is more long than square, consider going with an inset linear fireplace to accent the geometry of your space; generally long and rectangular these can be unobtrusively trimmed out to maintain a subtle presence. This type of design also benefits from louvered trim, for the same reasons, an option that allows more direct heat to affect the space rather than funnelling it through a heating system. Trim itself is an important decision: while we all love the look and feel of a bulky stone hearth, that isn’t necessarily the best option for a toned-down, sleek atmosphere. While inset fireplaces can make use of attractive stone trim, less is more in this case, and consider a muted touch to diminish the austere presence.

Rising from the Ashes

West Coast Design Reconceptualises the Fireplace within an Overall Aesthetic Vision

89

If you would rather have a more traditional installation, consider its placement carefully; while it may seem counter-intuitive, trying to tuck a large fireplace away in an otherwise dead space (to avoid a blocky intrusion on an open concept) can create the aforementioned anchor effect, drawing guests unwittingly to a less-than-social area. An effective antidote is the peninsular fireplace, standing relatively alone and often accentuated by an emphasis on streamlined design. This option makes more of a statement of presence, but also infuses the space with a dynamism and fun aura; it fits excellently into spaces that benefit from open concepts and vaulted ceilings.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

One of the most attractive installations is the threesided (or see-through) fireplace. Casting an air of subtle mystery, these fireplaces invariably draw guests to peek through and experience a fusion of modern design and campfire sensibility. They can marry the comforting feel of the hearth with urban chic and are especially desirable in frequently social spaces, as they essentially create several discrete areas in their range.

90

All in all, West Coast designers are making it much easier to create comfortable living spaces that sacrifice little function in the name of style... and this includes our good old friend, the hearth. Keep the home fires burning on your own terms: you won’t regret it.

Lofty Goals for Maximizing Space and Connecting with Your Home

92

Words by roberto bernardi

Most of us who grew up in smaller spaces remember our first experience with a loft; amazed at the ingenuity, enthralled with the feeling that we were inhabiting a hidden space, many made a promise to ourselves that – when we owned our own home – we would settle for nothing less than a seriously enjoyable upper chamber (along with a trampoline room, monkey bars in the hallways and chocolate syrup fountains in the kitchen). While some dreams fade, driven and ingenious homeowners are now benefiting from forethought with a usable, even classy attic substitute. The soaring ceilings that are ubiquitous in open concept interior design are great; they let us feel like there is that much more room to breathe and they let light play throughout living spaces.

Lofts are an easy solution that often give homes a plentiful dose of character and sets them apart from their cookie-cutter brethren. They also tend not to annex the same amount of space from the floor below as entire upper level: the vaulted ceiling in a loft allows for less floor-ceiling clearance along walls, if needed. Urban planners have been urging us for years to build vertically and even one extra living area can be a contribution to the fight against sprawl. Lofts also make good use of heating that can otherwise be lost, saving resources and, therefore, money.

The best parts about lofts, however, are their ability to connect us to the physical structure that occupies a monumental, if sometimes underappreciated, presence in our lives. october/november 2012

Lofts have no downside (all wordplay aside): they make use of space that is otherwise unusable, they are cozy areas in the chill of winter, and they’re just plain fun. They even have secret benefits that we are not always aware of, like helping us live in tune with our homes.

But all that space can be an awful waste of domestic territory: when nerves start fraying in a home with overlapping personal spaces, one often starts wondering about the many possibilities that have been lost in the name of open atmosphere.

93

It is far too easy today to get out of touch with the physical reality of our homes: hardwood hides the joists, drywall hides the wall structure; unless you’re a do-ityourselfer, you might go years without seeing, touching, and sensing the true structure of your home. Why does this matter? Because it puts us out of touch with the nature of our homes, their possibilities and their limitations.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Enter the loft. open joists visible, sometimes within reach, grounding us. it reminds us that our home is not a multitude of fragmented boxes stuck together, but a cohesive unit.

94

Such daily exposure to impressive wood beams and timbers can also help connect us to the greater area where we live – the land of towering cedars and verdant forests. Many people only experience the superb complexity of wood grains, smells and textures, on their hikes through our gorgeous forests; life in the vaulted loft is a daily reminder of the beauteous surroundings and ample resources that make it all possible.

The tangible boundaries of a loft space will often help guide the interior design process; the feeling of space stolen from waste acts as a subconscious imperative to keep it uncluttered. Simple, sparse furnishings with a focus on comfort are definitely the way to go; if high-end is your thing, try handcrafted wood-based furnishings to reflect the surroundings. On the other hand, lofts are generally informal and peaceful spaces, so going with plush, unrestrained options will never hurt.

It’s a misnomer that lofts are musty, lightless places; a quality loft can be outfitted with as many windows as desired, and the increased altitude means much more exposure to sunlight. Best of all, a well-planned loft can incorporate several skylights, engendering countless starry nights and a healthy daily dose of vitamin D. If you are hesitant to let in so much sun, have no fear: there are now many skylight blinds on the market.

escape: Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa Home of Canada’s only desert and warmest lake

‘Napa of the North’, as it is often referred to, Spirit Ridge truly is a one of a kind experience, and it takes full advantage of its location and surroundings to provide each warmly welcomed guest with a unique retreat. The resort is surrounded by miles of pastoral views; sun drenched vineyards and refreshingly sparkling waters. The property offers the most spectacular location, world class services and guest amenities, lovely suites, two swimming pools, fine dining, access to beach lounging and vineyards. As it happened, we were in need of a quiet getaway, and Spirit Ridge fit the bill perfectly.

october/november 2012

Osoyoos, BC is one of those very special places. Located in the South Okanagan, it is the only arid desert in Canada with more than 2,000 hours of sunshine annually. Lake Osoyoos, the warmest lake in Canada, is surrounded by cactus, sage, and vineyards – making Osoyoos the perfect escape – temporary or permanent - and the ideal spot for the five star vacation property known as Spirit Ridge Vineyard Resort & Spa.

Osoyoos boasts 2,000 hours of sunshine each year Spirit Ridge invites you to fully recharge. The 226 guest suites at Spirit Ridge offer exceptional vistas, and all the comforts of home including a BBQ. As we entered our guestroom, it was evident that comfort, convenience and calm were intentionally built into the room design. Soaring nine foot ceilings made the room seem overly spacious, the spa bathroom was divine and the living area was generous in size, with a casually elegant aesthetic. Like all suites on the property, our room featured a gourmet kitchen, five appliances, free high speed internet and local phone calls. Our balcony was oversized and looked out over the vineyards. It was tranquil, relaxing and a relief from the city.

102

Perched serenely above Lake Osoyoos, amidst the great vineyards and orchards is Mica Restaurant at Spirit Ridge.

The contemporary design of the restaurant allows for panoramic views of the surrounding mountains, and the shimmering blue waters of the lake below. Views can be enjoyed from the spectacular patio oasis and the indoor seating area. The restaurant provides a casual fine dining experience, complete with relaxing music and professional, knowledgeable staff. Mica considers their inventive menu to be comprised of ‘wine country comfort food’. All of the products used by Mica are sourced regionally and only the freshest of ingredients are chosen. Every plate has been designed with meticulous detail by Chef Robert Walker. A classic cocktail menu and impressive list of South Okanagan wines ensure the perfect pairing with any menu selection. After a leisurely breakfast and an early morning dip in Lake Osoyoos, and before our local tours began, we headed off to indulge in a little spa time. Nestled off the main hotel lobby

The hotel property boasts a hot tub and two outdoor pools – one that is family friendly and the other offering ‘quiet time’ for adults. Wandering through the vineyards to the waters of

Lake Osoyoos presents a whole new world of possibilities. Boating, swimming, sunbathing, having a mid-day meal or taking a leisurely walk on the beach - just a few of the activities that await on the desert shores. On day two, we visited NK’MIP Cellars, which is the first Aboriginal owned and operated winery in North America. The views from the winery were awe inspiring and were only exceeded in experience by the wine. A tour of the cellars is a must-do experience in South Okanagan. The architecture, native art, Aboriginal artifacts are beautiful, as is the unique nature that surrounds the site. Dinner at The Patio at NK’MIP Cellars was exceptional; certainly a little hidden gem with unrivalled views of the valley. The imaginative menu by Chef Liam McNulty places care and emphasis on local ingredients and pairing food with NK’MIP Cellars wines.

cook street A historic enclave nestled between the ocean and downtown Victoria

Cook Street Village truly is a village within the city of Victoria. Under the shelter of the horse chestnut trees, a gathering of small shops serves the immediate needs of the young and old who live nearby. Close to the gardens and pathways of Beacon Hill Park, and a short walk from the breathtaking sea views of Dallas Road, this is a natural stopping place for visitors from near and far.

When my wife and I moved to the neighbourhood in 1984 we found a perfect place to raise our daughters. Doting seniors kept their eyes on the girls while they walked to the nearby Sir James Douglas Elementary School. In fact, this area was part of the property which Sir James Douglas set aside for himself as Fairfield Farm when he was the chief factor of the Hudson’s Bay Company in 1848.

Above. The Cook Street village is set in a low-lying area of Victoria, almost at sea level. Looking north on Cook Street you can see the road rise up ahead to Southgate Street, just past the 24-hour convenience store. Next door to Mac’s is Pic-a-Flic, a video shop with an unbeatable collection of foreign and classic films.

Right page top left. Kay’s Korner. In a neighbourhood sprinkled with yard sales every weekend, the owner of Kay’s Korner - “Experienced Goods” - has to work hard to keep ahead of the competition. With a discerning eye and an accurate sense of value, she constantly restocks her shop with the sort of things people need in their suites and homes. Much of my furniture – unpretentious, serviceable, slightly stylish – has come from this shop.

Right page top right. Starbucks. When the Workmen’s Compensation Board offices moved some years ago I could hardly believe that a coffee shop would take over – how could they ever fill such a large space? But fill it they did, and now the patio on their setback frontage is constantly crowded with people reading newspapers, catching up on their email and watching the world go by.

Right page bottom left. The Sun Brite Laundromat is no more, but fond memories of it remain. I recall passing it one day to see a wedding party having a group photo taken in front of it. As it happened, the happy couple had met while doing their laundry there. Right page bottom right. The architecture of the Cook Street Village isn’t up to much, but the overarching canopy of horse chestnut trees gives a cozy enclosed feeling to the place. These trees soften the sunshine and quiet the traffic noise, slowing the pace of life down for all of us who live nearby.

The abundant gardens here now make it a lovely place to go for a walk at any time of year. The fields surrounding lower Cook Street were once prized farmsteads which Chinese market gardeners chose for their productive properties. This is “bottom land”, the Cook Street Village being almost at sea level. Emily Carr wrote about it as a “skunk cabbage bog”, which often flooded and was used as a skating rink when the temperature dropped below freezing. In fact it was an ancient lake bed which drained out along the Humboldt Valley, emptying into what was called James Bay before it was filled in for the construction of the Empress Hotel.

As our daughters grew up they learned the ways of the world by running errands to village shops. Later they got part-time jobs in the pharmacy and served as baristas at the first Starbucks location on Vancouver Island. As a family we could go out for fish and chips and took a certain pride in our easy access to what we thought of as the best video rental shop in the world. Much of our furniture came from (and returned to) the second hand shop on the corner. For us Cook Street truly was a village. During our time there almost every property in the Cook Street Village has been rebuilt or renovated. The pharmacy became a pub, the dry cleaner became a dress shop, and amid contentious public hearings the fish and chip shop became a store offering high-class rubber boots. We now have pet boutiques, a liquor store and an endless supply of coffee shops. In the eyes of urban planners the Cook Street Village is exactly what the future needs. Within easy reach of downtown by foot, bike or public transit, it is a prime site for increased urban density – secondary suites, infill housing and small condos are all “congesting” the footprint. It may become more like Vancouver’s Kitsilano as time goes on, yet in true Victoria fashion we can be expect that the Cook Street Village will always remain pleasantly behind the times.

The Stock Market and Safety of Capital

What about the risk of losing all your money and stock markets crashing? It is quite a serious question and it does prevent many people from participating in the markets; let’s put this question into context. For the 30 years I’ve been in the retirement and estate planning business, I have seen many painful situations that people have either been seduced into or have created by their own means. The following examples are a few of the situations and corresponding problems that cause people to either lose money or improperly increase risk beyond the right balance.

Greed:

I often hear people say that the stock market is “risky” and the potential of losing life savings is far too daunting to take a chance. Statements such as these present some small truths, but in most cases they are broad generalizations. Like so many things in our lives we are influenced by the media, hearsay and in most cases don’t take the time to do proper research. This article will attempt to put into context many of the misunderstandings pursuant to the stock market and investing, with the hopes of sharing some ideas to better protect you in the investment world.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

The stock market was created as a tool to bring capital together for people with innovative ideas. The stock market is referred to as the capital market - people with money (capital), investing in the ideas of people needing capital to grow their businesses. The market itself has grown into a mechanism for investors to create liquidity between themselves, it further provides the ability to buy and sell shares within these businesses.

114

If you pay into the Canada Pension Plan, own a mutual fund, or participate with any type of pension system, you indirectly participate in the capital markets or the stock market. Our own Canada Pension Plan made a decision many years ago to increase the percentage that it can invest in stocks – it is currently at 50% (private and public investments). What this means is one of the core components of our social retirement net, derives its income and growth from the capital markets. Due to our low interest rates and bond yields this is becoming more and more important as an option for growth.

One character trait that I’ve seen in all of us when it comes to investing is that we can get greedy. It is the one human quality I believe is in all of us to some extent; a gambling type spirit that does not blend well with proper investing. Most people remember Nortel, a high tech darling of Canada in the 1990s and early part of the 2000’s, it was spun off from a large Canadian telecom company called BCE. Nortel provided specialized switching equipment that was very important in the transformation that was happening in the telecom and internet world. Nortel grew into being Canada’s largest company at one point in time, and even comprised almost one third of the TSX index. Nortel is currently in bankruptcy and the stock is worthless. The media has printed stories of people losing their life savings. As much as those stories are painful to read, the one question we always ask is: why did you put your life savings into one stock? Warren Buffett would never do that as one of the world’s wealthiest men and recognized investment gurus. Usually the underlining answer to that question is greed! People are trying to hit a home run and double their money quickly. That “gambling” spirit in all of us has to be put aside to properly invest in the market.

Public versus private investments: I would say the area that has produced the greatest losses for investors would be in the private sector. Although greed plays a major role, “seduction” and “leverage” can be worthy culprits. The waters get quite muddy in understanding certain investments but there are a few distinct differences that can assist you in choosing where to invest. The greatest is the difference between public and private investments. Companies that trade on stock exchanges are referred to as public companies. These companies have to go through rigorous evaluations and provide audited financial statements just to be accepted on their respective exchange. That in itself will not guarantee whether fraud or misrepresentation takes place, as in the case of Bre-X; but it does provide a substantial layer of protection regarding the substance of a company. Mutual fund companies have to register their prospectuses with the securities commissions and are highly regulated. Stockbrokers are regulated and bonded. Where problems occur is when investors get seduced into buying private equity deals that fall outside the protection of security or insurance regulators.

In the

Details It all starts with thought provoking questions: 1. Take time to educate yourself and understand capital markets 2. Don’t be greedy. Understand that investing is a slow and patient process and that you cannot get rich overnight 3. Diversify your investment portfolio to minimize risk. Don’t put all your eggs in one basket. 4. Ask what the regulation and protection is behind the investment that you are purchasing. Know if you are buying into privately held or publicly traded stock.

W. J. Pendray residence “A beautiful home, modern in its appointments and an ornament to James Bay, is the new residence of Mr. W. J. Pendray on Belleville street facing the harbor,” enthused a reporter for the Colonist in March 1897. The Pendray family lived there for forty years, then the house went through a series of owners, but this stately residence still adorns its original site where it serves as a bed and breakfast and restaurant. It was built in what architectural historians call “Queen Anne Free Classic” and is considered one of Victoria’s best examples of the style.

White Swan soap was their first major industrial venture. The plant stood on Humboldt Street, perched above the shoreline of the James Bay mudflats. Soon Pendray added a paint factory next door. When plans were afoot to fill in the mudflats prior to building the Empress Hotel, William Pendray relocated his factories to Laurel Point. The soap business was sold in 1913 to Lever Brothers, but the family kept and expanded the paint plant which became famous on the west coast under the brand name BAPCO—British America Paint Company.

october/november 2012

William Joseph Pendray was born in Cornwall in 1846 and went to the California gold fields as a teenager and later came to British Columbia’s Cariboo gold rush. He returned to England, but decided to move to Victoria in 1875. Two years later his English sweetheart, Amelia Carthew, joined him and they were married the day after she arrived. Over the next fifteen years they had four sons: Ernest, Carl, Herbert and Roy. Four generations of the family were involved in Victoria’s once lucrative manufacturing sector.

William and Amelia Pendray began their married life in a modest house on Douglas Street, but later moved to Courtenay Street. By the 1890s it was time to move up in the world and they planned to build their dream home on property they acquired on the south shore of the Inner Harbour. In preparation they travelled extensively throughout the western United States, partly as a holiday, but mainly to get ideas for their new place. One of the popular styles that had taken San Francisco by storm was known as “Queen Anne which featured an asymmetrical look with steep, hipped roofs, projecting gables, an octagonal or round tower projecting from a front corner, a wraparound entry porch with turned spindles and a great variety of textured surface treatments such as patterned shingles.

Upon returning to Victoria they engaged architect Alexander Charles Ewart to turn their dreams into reality. Ewart had worked briefly in the office of John Teague before branching out on his own, but was not particularly well known in the city and soon afterwards moved to Nelson and later Corvallis. The finished house was praised for its innovations which were among the first in Victoria. There was a billiard room on the top floor of the tower and a gymnasium in the attic for the Pendrays’ four sons. Special attention, however, was paid to the ceiling and wall frescoes painted by Messrs. Muller and Sturn, two German artists who claimed they had worked in the largest castles in Germany and Switzerland. They applied what they called the “European style” to their work which they explained was inspired by “the ruins of ancient Pompeii.”

120

Each principal room was adorned in a unique colour scheme and motif: the drawing room boasted a cream coloured ceiling in different tints and ornamented with flowers and scroll work; the music room was done with a screen effect in light and dark brown, also with floral details; and, the dining room was given “a most charming effect” produced by images of fruit, “hanging as if in tempting clusters from the ceiling.” In keeping with other grand homes of the era, the Pendrays’ residence incorporated decorative hand painted tiles around the

fireplaces. Pheasants and other birds were featured in the foyer’s fireplace and a romantic view of Marmsley Castle graced the one in the dining room. The front yard was developed to complement the house. It featured a fountain with an electric pump surrounded by a formal garden with boxwood edging and planted with topiary in amazing shapes, such as a bird on a nest, a teddy bear, a rooster and a squirrel. By the early 1900s the garden had become a tourist attraction and was featured on tinted postcards. William Pendray died in 1913 and Amelia in 1937. Following her death the house was acquired by the Missionary Sisters of Notre Dame des Anges who called it “Loretto Hall” and ran it as a women’s hostel. In 1970 Floss and Bill Prior bought it and started restoring it for use as the Captain’s Palace Restaurant. Today it continues as a restaurant and bed and breakfast called The Gatsby Mansion. New owners are planning a complete restoration of the heritage building.

the haunting of...

On a clear, sunny day spooky stories about ghosts seem out of place at “Havenwood,” a stately home overlooking Esquimalt Lagoon in Colwood. But on a dark, stormy day or as dusk descends, the surrounding forest wraps itself around the place and the ghosts fit right into the setting. “Havenwood” is one of the region’s hidden heritage treasures and, increasingly, becoming well known for its art and for the odd things that happen there.

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Built by Herbert and Charlotte Pendray in 1924 in the style of a Mediterranean villa, it was their country home for many years. Herbert was the third son of William and Amelia Pendray and was raised in the family home on Belleville Street, now The Gatsby Mansion. (See the story of its construction on page 116). Recently “Havenwood” has served a number of institutional uses, and now bursts with life and creativity as the headquarters of Coast Collective arts centre.

130

The ghosts at “Havenwood” can be heard. One of the mysteries is the sound of bouncing balls for no apparent reason. A typical situation happened when one of the artists was closing up in the evening.

She heard the sound coming from upstairs—Herbert Pendray’s old room—and went to investigate, but no one was there and nothing was out of place. The next day she mentioned the episode to another artist who had had a similar experience. Upon a closer inspection of Herbert’s room they realized the floor was covered with carpet, which should have muffled any sound. Is it merely a coincidence that similar sounds are heard at The Gatsby Mansion, Herbert’s boyhood home, coming from the place where Herbert and his brothers used to bounce balls on the floor of their attic gymnasium? Another sound frequently heard at “Havenwood” is footsteps along the hallways. It is particularly unnerving when an artist is disturbed by the sound while working alone. When they call out, “Who’s there?” no one ever is. Perhaps it’s the same ghost who causes the telephones to ring in unusual patterns when no one is calling, or who makes the chime on the front door sound when the door has not been opened. The ghosts at “Havenwood” can also be felt. Herbert Pendray’s room is particularly charged with such physical energy. During

The ghosts at “Havenwood” seem to enjoy playing pranks. In any art gallery, when paintings are hung on the walls, sometimes they need straightening. But at “Havenwood” one special day stands out when a small painting hanging on the wall of the upper landing moved around repeatedly through the day. Various people noticed it and set it right, but when they realized that they were straightening it over and over again a small group of them stood in front of it talking about what was occurring. As they did so they saw the painting start to tilt on its own. Not just a slight movement, but a slow and distinct push to one side. One of those watching called out in frustration, “Whoever you are, stop doing this!”

an exhibition opening when over 200 guests mingled with the artists one young man hurried out of the room, looking as if he had seen a ghost. In this case, however, he hadn’t actually seen it, but had been grabbed by it. He thought his sister was with him as he entered the room, so when he felt a distinct tug on his sleeve, he assumed it was her. He turned around to face her, but realized she wasn’t there. No one was there! He was in the room all by himself.

For people who are unfamiliar with the paranormal, talking to ghosts may be a bizarre thing to do, but in many cases it really works. Sometimes ghosts don’t know they are causing problems. Speaking sternly and authoritatively is often the best approach to get the message across that the ghosts have gone too far. In the case of the tilting painting, it did the trick and the episode came to an end and has never been repeated. Christmas is a busy time at the gallery’s well stocked gift shop. Two years ago one of the windows was decorated for the season with handcrafted glass icicles. They were in a place close to the cash register and someone working there would occasionally bump into them and set them all to swinging and spinning. On a particular day a few of the artists saw one of the icicles gyrating like a wild pendulum, while all the surrounding ones were as frozen in place as the observers were. No one had been near the icicles at all. A volunteer had what is popularly known as a “ghost hunting” application on his iPad. This is a version of an EMF (electromagnetic field) detector, often used by electricians, but frequently employed by paranormal investigators to locate places of abnormal energy, which usually are associated with ghosts. Energy was very strong in some unusual parts of the building that day, but there was no repeat performance by the rogue icicle. “Havenwood” is a beautiful, heritage house filled with creative people. Whatever ghostly energy is there is not malevolent and may very well be triggered into action by the artists who expend so much of their own energy there on producing inspired artwork. “Havenwood” is located in Colwood at 3221 Heatherbell Road (at the end of the road and through the stone gates). Grounds are open daily. The gallery and gift shop inside the house are open Wednesday through Sunday 12 noon to 5:00 pm. back to the land Ceramics from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands 1970-1985

“Perhaps due to a general lack of understanding of ceramic history, ceramic practice in Canada has been both neglected by critics and ignored by institutions. … ‘Back to the Land’ can be a small step in addressing this neglected area of scholarship by focusing on and elucidating a particular historic period of ceramic development in a particular region—Victoria and the Gulf Islands.” – AGGV

AGGV’s Back to the Land exhibit will run from October 5, 2012 to February 3, 2013, and will showcase a multitude of ceramics made between 1970 and 1985, a time that coincided with North America’s elusive ‘back to the land’ movement. Guests of the exhibition can look forward to viewing the distinguished works of George Cummings, Walter Dexter, Wayne Ngan, Meg Buckley, Lari Robson, Robin Hopper and many more.

In much the same that Canadian craft and design are left out of the history books, so too are ceramics and pottery from Victoria and the Gulf Islands

Canada’s inferiority complex on the world stage of craft and design was challenged and addressed during the AGGV Modern Eye exhibit that ran from July to November of last year. We learned that we should probably start to celebrate Canadian craft and designers for designing, because this country plays house to a host of talented and praiseworthy artists. In much the same way that Canadian design is seemingly left out of history, so too are ceramics and pottery from Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands.

Carr owned the Potter’s Wheel Gallery in Victoria in the early seventies and has known all of these potters since that time. In 1980, Carr chaired the founding committee of the Cartwright Gallery in Vancouver, which later became the Canadian Craft Museum. “I think it’s going to be a very big opening,” says exhibition curator and ceramics enthusiast, Diane Carr. “I haven’t heard of one potter yet who isn’t coming.” With 160 pieces from 31 local potters, there will be a lot to see in the Pollard Gallery at AGGV this fall. Carr gathered most of the ceramics for the exhibition from featured potters’ personal collections—works never sold, never given away and never before been seen. It’s interesting that the history of this period has never been researched, written about or exhibited, yet some of the featured potters have exhibited and won prizes internationally; somehow, these internationally acclaimed potters remain unrecognized in the Canadian history books. Any history on ceramics in BC tends to focus on Vancouver, with the exception of Wayne Ngan and Heinz Laffin on Hornby Island.

Among politics and economics, the exhibition is also influenced by three prominent art movements from the twentieth century: the European modernist movement in Bauhaus, abstract expressionism and the Leach-Hamada tradition. Bernard Leach was an English potter who had been raised in Japan, where he befriended fellow potter, Shoji Hamada. Together Leach and Hamada spun to synthesize east and west with their pottery. The George Cummings jug with the tenmoku glaze elegantly wears this LeachHamada synthesis. People often ask Carr to identify pieces found in thrift shops and at auctions, as not all of the ceramics made in Victoria and the Gulf Islands have personal markings. It helps to know the potter’s style, she says, which is not fool proof, but you can often tell who made a piece by its style. Carr isn’t sure what will happen as a result of this exhibition, but she hopes that going ‘back to the 70s’ will help people to identify the potters of unknown ceramics and learn a little more about its rich and varying history.

During the “great exodus” of the 70s—that is, the North American ‘back to the land’ movement—young people hopped in milk trucks and VW vans and fled the cities for simpler lifestyles in the country, where they could live in harmony with nature and the land. Potting in Victoria flourished, and potters on Canada’s West Coast began to make a living from potting for perhaps the first time. Political upheaval from the Vietnam War, civil rights and women’s movements erupted throughout North America with alarming force, and although widespread ‘back to the land’ activists spilled largely from the States into Canada, most potters moved back to the land for economic reasons.

With 160 pieces and 31 local potters, this exhibition is influenced by three art movements: Bauhaus modernism, abstract expressionism and the Leach-Hamada tradition

How a New Generation Retires

One of the sleeper movie hits of summer 2012 was The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel. The story followed seven retirees from different walks of life that ran away from dreary, wet England to start a new life in India. The movie illustrated that life in the twilight years can still be full of excitement and challenge. Those retirees certainly debunked the old idea of retirement!

What does retirement look like to you?

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Do you picture seniors sitting watching television all day or hitting the greens every day? Or do you envision Freedom 55 as lounging on the beach with nary a care in the world? Some seniors will continue the clichÊs, but many more won’t.

Retirement today isn’t about labouring for decades until you could retire to a quiet existence; it’s about what to do in the next exciting chapter of your life. As we’ve seen technology change in the blink of an eye, the reality of retirement has changed nearly as fast in the last decade. The new breed of British Columbian retirees is busy, really busy. They are younger and more energetic than ever before.

21st century boomers are also opening up their wallets for travel like never before. There are many travel agencies solely dedicated to planning senior trips, such as cruises and European trips, as well as the emerging trend known as voluntourism. Local retirees are also packing their bags with gusto and heading out to the jungles of Africa, to Third World countries to volunteer their talents and to explore all four corners of this diverse world of ours. According to Statistics Canada, there are five million Canadians who are 65 and over. Many retirees say they are less stressed and enjoying an increase in intellectual stimulation as never before.

In some cases, that might include volunteering or giving back. For others, it will mean reinventing themselves – starting a new business. DALLAS ROAD Dallas married the governor’s daughter The beaches, footpaths and magnificent views of the Olympic Peninsula Mountains make Dallas Road a must-see. All of us, at some time or other, have walked, biked or taken visitors along this beautiful waterfront route. It has its place in Victoria’s history, being named, not after the city in Texas, but after someone who lived here in days gone by. Alexander Grant Dallas was born in British Guiana in 1816, and was educated in Scotland. A successful business career in England and China led to him being elected a director of the Hudson’s Bay Company. Before long, he was on a ship bound for Panama and Fort Vancouver, on the Columbia River and ultimately Victoria - HBC’s western headquarters on the southern tip of Vancouver Island.

The two men were as different as chalk and cheese. Both were intelligent, strong and opinionated. But Douglas was the product of a career in the field, with experience gained over almost four decades at several different, often remote, fur trading posts. Dallas, on the other hand, was a businessman. He had never had to “rough it.” His world was a more civilized one, populated by bankers, financiers and other influential people. Yet if he and Douglas were to work together, they would have to find some middle ground. At this point, Dallas made what was probably the shrewdest move of his career. He elected to join Victoria’s “first family.”

october/november 2012

It was 1857. For several years previous, James Douglas had been doing double duty as Chief Factor at Fort Victoria and Governor of Vancouver Island. HBC officials in London suspected he was becoming too caught up in governing the colony to pay proper attention to the company’s affairs. Dallas was sent to help.

Dallas Road has always been a sparkling jewel in Victoria’s landscape

Like others before him, Dallas was captivated by the stunning Douglas daughters. Born of the union between James and his halfbreed wife Amelia, all five girls were exceptionally pretty and very shy. The oldest, Cecilia, was already Dr. J.S. Helmcken’s wife. Jane, five years Cecilia’s junior, was 23 years younger than the man who now sought her hand. But true love knows no birthdays, and in March 1858, Dallas married the Governor’s daughter. Six months later, when Colonial surveyor Joseph Pemberton created Victoria’s first street map, our beautiful waterfront route carried the name of the governor’s latest son-in-law.

The SS Commodore. Royal BC Museum, BC Archives B_02713.

Little more than a month later, the Commodore sailed into Victoria Harbour, bringing the first of a wave of 20,000 prospectors bound for the newly discovered gold fields on the Fraser River. The British Government, spooked by the spectre of permanent American settlement on the mainland, promptly turned the land formerly known as New Caledonia into a colony named British Columbia. This posed a problem for James Douglas. No longer able to act as Chief Factor and governor of both colonies, he was forced to choose, and after more than 37 years with the HBC, transferred his allegiance to the Crown. His son-in-law, Alexander Grant Dallas, took over as head of HBC’s Western Department.

Jane and Alexander’s union was a happy one, and produced nine children. As though to show no ill-feeling, one of the boys was named James Douglas, after his grandfather. The family lived on Government Street near Broughton, just beyond the fort property, a short distance from Jane’s childhood home.

By that time, the Dallas’s were long gone. In 1862, Dallas had been appointed Governor of HBC’s northwest territories, known as Rupert’s Land, and had moved his family to Fort Garry (now Winnipeg). In 1864, he retired to England, and died there in 1882. Jane died in 1909. Today’s Dallas Road, a well-known scenic route, starts at the north end of Erie Street, in James Bay, and ends on Ross Bay, where St. Charles Street meets Hollywood Crescent. It’s a long legacy for a man who lived a short time on these shores.

Although they never lived on it, Dallas Road was destined to become an important feature on the James Bay peninsula. In the early days it curved past shipyards and J.P. Rithet’s wharves, and ended at the Beacon Hill Park race track. Later, it would extend to Lover’s Lane (today’s Memorial Crescent, along the side of Ross Bay Cemetery).

FILLER – LAYING THE FOUNDATION the third Pillar of Beautiful Skin

One of the beautiful features of babies is their fullness; those amazing eyes, gorgeous cheeks and the radiance of youth. As we age, not only does the skin thin and lose its luster, but it loses its support and begins to sink and sag. My patients tell me that they do not know what is wrong, but they just feel that they look “tired,” “drawn,” “sad,” or prematurely aged. What I observe in our consultations is that there is a loss of volume leading to hollowing of the cheeks under the eyes, drooping of the brows, a downturn of the corners of the mouth, premature jowls, hollowing of the temples, flattening of the forehead and lines radiating out from the lips. To restore the structural integrity of the skin, it is important to address this third dimension: the foundation. Most people are aware of “collagen,” the main structural protein in our skin. Less well known is our skin’s natural sugar molecule called hyaluronic acid that our collagen is embedded in. Hyaluronic acid is essential for our skin health – it provides both a physical support as well as allows our immune system and other biologic functions to work their magic. Interestingly, hyaluronic acid is found both in plants and in animals with universal and identical composition. It can attract up to 1000 times its weight in water – therefore, a significant and important factor for our skin’s hydration.

What are dermal fillers?

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Many varieties of fillers exist with variable benefits and limitations yet the most popular category is that of the natural, hyaluronan-based fillers. Restylane and Juvederm are two of the most trusted brands and these are what I commonly use. They are ideal because they can be used in all areas and in all levels of the skin so they are very flexible in application. The results are immediate and my patients typically return to their daily activities immediately after a treatment. Studies have shown that results can last up to three years with proper maintenance. More than 2 million filler procedures are performed annually in North America, a testament to their many benefits and efficacy.

maintenance: Once you have achieved your ideal correction, once to twice a year is sufficient to maintain results with smaller treatments. To get the greatest longevity, it is best to aim for a full correction, as partial corrections will fade more quickly. If filler treatments are combined with Botox treatments, this will also tend to increase the longevity of the fillers … and vice versa – there is a true synergy. Filler treatments can also improve outcomes from laser resurfacing treatments like Fraxel. The overall improvement achievable with dermal filler treatments is as natural as is the aesthetic of your provider – ensure you are happy and comfortable with the abilities of your treating physician prior to undergoing treatment and you will realize great, natural benefit from dermal fillers.

From a cosmetic perspective, I find fillers help my patients in the following ways:

• Subtle enhancement can be offered globally to the face for a non-surgical lift • They assist in lifting areas like the brows and cheeks • Fillers can round the jawline • They can reshape and smooth out the ridge of the nose – a non-surgical rhinoplasty • They can improve the symmetry of the face • Fillers can restore depressed scars • They enhance facial contours for a refreshed, healthier appearance • They can softly augment the lip or lip border for a natural, more youthful look • They help to improve lines and folds by supporting skin structures • They can also restore volume to aging hands – the appearance of veins can be diminished • Fillers will help maintain the natural hydration of skin by attracting and holding moisture leading to a more balanced complexion • Fillers work synergistically with other nonsurgical dermatology and laser procedures to help optimize results

Dr. Mark Lupin Dermatologist

Dr. Mark Lupin BSc MD FRCPC (Dermatologist) Clinical Instructor – Department of Dermatology and Skin Science - University of British Columbia Regional Director – Canadian Dermatology Association Dermatology Director – Cosmedica Laser Centre cosmedica.ca

I find the most common concern of new patients is with regard to over-correction – most patients emphasize their desire for a subtle, natural correction, which is also my sensibility. They are usually relieved to look at my staff and see that they all look beautiful and very natural. To this point, it is paramount that you choose a Dermatologist or Plastic Surgeon with many years of experience as well as a great aesthetic sense. A detailed knowledge of facial anatomy is critical for safety and best outcomes. The best treatments should not look like treatments. You should simply look fantastic – and not look “treated.” The goal is a natural “Wow!”

a final thought

Perhaps autumn is a favoured season because it is the last hurrah before winter…

HLMAGAZINE.COM

Different people love this season for different reasons – the fresh air, the beautiful leaves, the anticipation of Thanksgiving and Christmas, or perhaps the spark of a New Year on the horizon.

No matter your reason, it is always the perfect time to reflect on home and self, and to possibly put into perspective how far we have come this year, and where we are still trying to get. For some of us, this means celebrating personal successes, or career goals yet to be achieved; for others it is the countless home projects that are still on the ‘honey-do’ list or celebrating the home renovation that turned out so amazing.

Words by our editor - tracey drake

October gave a party; The leaves by hundreds came— The Chestnuts, Oaks, and Maples, And leaves of every name. The Sunshine spread a carpet, And everything was grand, Miss Weather led the dancing, Professor Wind the band.” —George Cooper (1838-1927)

Whatever it is for you, look at your checklist of ‘did it’ and ‘need to do’ with a little temperance. Life can be so busy – and projects are just - well… projects. This year, show up for the October party, and take some time away to marvel at the mighty Oaks, stare up into the sunshine and let the West Coast winds take you away. Trust me – the ‘to-do’ list will still be there, waiting patiently for you, when you get back.
