The Mountain Climber A Vancouver Island mountain climber, desperate to conquer a challenging cliff face in Strathcona Provincial Park, initiated his climb after years of preparation. He wanted all glory all to himself so decided on a solo ascent. He struggled against his timeless adversary, utilizing all his knowledge, experience and strength. The warm day bled slowly into chilly night, but still he continued to climb. Night fell with heaviness at a very high altitude. Visibility was zero. Everything was black. There was no moon, no stars, no sound.

In order for any resolution (change) to happen, you must take action and let go of whatever you’ve been holding onto that has held you back. And so, as we begin a new year it reminded me of a story that had a profound effect on me (see right); helping me to achieve. I hope this story helps you or someone you know. He was climbing a ridge about 100 metres from the top, when he slipped and fell. The rapid descent brought him close to the mountain’s side, and he could only see blotches of darkness that passed. He felt a terrible sensation of being sucked in by gravity. He kept falling, and in those anguishing moments, a succession of memories passed through his mind. In that moment, he thought he would die. Suddenly, he felt a jolt that almost tore him in half. “Yes!” Like any good mountain climber he had staked himself with a long rope tied to his waist. In those moments of stillness, suspended in the air he had no other choice but to shout, “HELP ME! HELP ME!” Suddenly, from the darkness came a deep voice. “What do you want me to do?” “Save me.” “Do you really think that I can save you?” “Yes I do.” “Then cut the rope that is holding you up.” There was another moment of silence and stillness, as the climber’s grip tightened on the rope. The following day, a rescue team found a frozen mountain climber hanging to a rope... two feet off the ground. Sometimes you need to let go of what you’re hanging onto in order to live.

E Editor’s Message 2012 is well underway and what a spectacular new year it has turned out to be. The weather has been exceptionally good and the city is vibrant and buzzing with activity. Homes & Living magazine has also been busier than ever, with an increase to 6 issues starting this year, and H&L’s expansion into Vancouver for 2012. In the pages of this issue, I am pleased to share my interview with BC Premier Christy Clark in our Celebrity Profile feature. Premier Clark was insightful, down to earth and a pleasure to talk with. Read the full article [page 68] to learn how Christy Clark sees the personal side of life as a woman, mother and native British Columbian. H&L’s feature home [page 54], Windward Oaks by M. Did you know? In the early 1840s, the Hudson’s Bay Company was just a small trading post on Vancouver Island. Briefly called Fort Camosun and then Fort Albert, the post was officially named Fort Victoria, after Queen Victoria, in 1843.

Standing at Fort and Wharf today, it’s hard to imagine how this area would have looked to James Douglas, way back in 1842. Now, Fort Street is a busy thoroughfare; then, it was a rough trail leading east from the harbour called Camosack. Douglas was here to search for a suitable spot for a new Hudson’s Bay Company fur trading post. A year later, he and a group of 19 men returned aboard the SS Beaver. They landed in Lekwammen territory at Clover Point, waded through knee-high red clover to Beacon Hill, and then walked through the trees to the sheltered harbour that lay beyond. There, on a grassy slope above the waterfront, where a steep drop off would allow seagoing vessels to tie up, they built a fort.

Seeing few cedars around to provide pickets for the palisades, Douglas approached the Songhees people for help. The Songhees understood the concept of forts; their fortified village at Cadboro Bay had for centuries protected them from marauders. Douglas offered one blanket for every 40 pickets cut—even lent axes to help them with their work. They dragged and floated more than 400 logs from Cedar Hill (today’s Mount Douglas) to the inner harbour, then helped the HBC men build the fort.

Designed to be the company’s new northern headquarters, Fort Victoria (named after the young British queen of the day) was a suitably impressive sight. Six metre high palisades formed a 91 metre by 91 metre quadrangle. Inside, large log buildings contained residences, a mess hall, postmaster’s office, a school, stores, and warehouses filled with beaver and otter pelts. Two eight-sided bastions equipped with nine-pound cannons protected the fort’s inhabitants, who came and went through its east and west gates. The trail that crossed the fort compound and now continued from its east gate was part of the Songhees peoples’ traditional winter-time route across the peninsula.

The naming of Fort Street beckons back to the birth of Victoria, when James Douglas established the area as a trading company

In 1849, when the British Crown leased Vancouver Island to the Hudson’s Bay Company for seven shillings a year (roughly three dollars today), Chief Factor James Douglas and his family lived inside the fort enclosure. Two years later, they moved to their newly completed residence on the south side of the Inner Harbour. Gradually the settlement around the fort spread, as HBC retirees and other colonists arrived. But in the spring of 1858, when news of a major gold find on the Fraser River spread south to San Francisco, the population exploded. The first shipload of prospectors who sailed into our harbour doubled our numbers from 300 to 600 in a day. The next weeks saw 30,000 newcomers arrive, all intent on finding a fortune on the Fraser.

The miners bought licenses and equipment before setting sail for the mainland. When they returned a few months later with gold dust, they found prices had increased as eager entrepreneurs and others sought to service the rapidly growing population. Now, there were houses, a local newspaper, and a jail, hospital and fire hall. Soon there would be gas-lit street lamps, drains, piped water and parks—all the trappings of a modern township.

In August 1862, Victoria was incorporated as a city. By that time the HBC, seeing the writing on the wall, had ordered Douglas to demolish Fort Victoria. By the end of 1864, it was gone. Today, the only evidence of its existence is a set of mooring rings embedded in the rocks below Wharf Street, and the remains of its water well in the lobby of a commercial building nearby.

Fort Street. Today it’s a mecca for antique seekers, art aficionados and cappuccino lovers. Yesterday, it was where Victoria began.

The long since demolished home that Douglas built for his family in James Bay is now the site of the Royal BC Museum. And what was once a simple trail leading from the fort’s back gate now continues up to Moss Street, then crosses Oak Bay Avenue, Richmond, and Foul Bay, where it changes its name and continues on to Cadboro Bay.

We spend at least a quarter of our lives sleeping, or at least in our bedrooms trying to sleep! There are some important things that can be done to any bedroom to make it more comfortable, relaxing and sleep-inducing just by addressing key areas of the room… and style doesn’t have to be sacrificed either!

Start by creating a soothing and relaxing colour scheme. Choose soft, warm colours like Dulux China Rain, a warm gray/green, Martha Stewart Home Ice Rink, a warm gray/blue and Benjamin Moore Bed of Ferns 1511.

The bed is the focal point of any bedroom, so make sure that it really stands out. No matter how big or small the bedroom is, place lots of attention on this piece. A proper headboard, whether it is upholstered or wood, is important to keep the mattress and sheets in the right place as the night progresses. Bedskirts aren’t as popular as they use to be, so purchasing a platform bed or one with rails and a footboard can eliminate the need for skirts entirely. If your sleeping space is small, choose a low footboard that it won’t close the room in or make it feel smaller.

Pillows are the accents that cause the most division between couples. Women love them, men hate them! Adding large decorative euro shams are a good way to add softness to a large wood headboard if you sit up in bed to read. These square pillows also add an attractive decorative base to a bed and will hide your sleeping pillows that are often smaller and not always the best to look at.

For bedding, there are multiple choices available. For sheets and pillow cases, cotton is the easiest fabric to deal with as itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s breathable, washable and comes in a wide variety of styles and colours. Consider shams and duvet covers in one of the new durable microfibre fabrics to create the look of suede; a nice addition to your bed in winter months. This chic, washable fabric will stand up to the wear and tear of pets and children, should they happen to inhabit your bed from time to time!

Probably the most important element in a bedroom is lighting, both bedside and windows. Ultimately, a good night’s sleep is more likely to be achieved if your bedroom is entirely dark at night until you rise in the morning. Most city dwellers have become accustomed to the urban lights around them but it’s unhealthy to allow this light to enter your bedroom at night, as your body doesn’t know to shut down. Adding both light filtering blinds which provide privacy, and light during the day, paired with drapes with blackout lining are the ideal combination.

For comfort under foot, opt for either area rugs on hardwood flooring or add broadloom to your bedroom if you like the comfort of carpet to walk on daily. Make sure that the area rug covers the area where you get out of bed so you don’t have to step on a cold floor first thing in the morning. There are wonderful broadloom options for bedrooms that are modern and stylish if this is the route you want to take - anything from wool to bamboo are now available.

Bedroom lighting should be flexible so that you can have a lot of light when you need it, but low and soft when you want to relax. Bedside table lamps should be at least 26 inches high, so that it casts a large enough pool of light when you sit up in bed to read. A bright overhead light is also a good addition for tasks like cleaning, packing or making the bed. Put this light on a dimmer switch, since there will be times when you won’t want or need the maximum amount of light.

Keep the bedroom as uncluttered as possible so when you do finally get the chance to enter it, it feels like a retreat. Keep as many papers and day-today items in other rooms or out of sight in a pretty desk or night stand. A comfy chair and ottoman set in a corner is the perfect place to curl up and read or watch the news before bedtime. A clutter-free space that is both comfortable and stylish will create an atmosphere designed for sleep so you’ll wake refreshed and ready for a new day.

Tony’s Take on bc weather A very wise man named Kin Hubbard made this observation many years ago. And, when you think about it he was probably right on the money. Hubbard said; “Don`t knock the weather. If it didn`t change once in a while, nine out of ten people couldn`t start a conversation.”

Well, spring lies ahead and we have a lot to talk about in British Columbia, don`t we? We`ll start with “isn’t this a great day?” Or, “If you don`t like the weather, wait a few minutes and it`ll change.” And a few months later, or perhaps even days later, the opener may be something like; ‘’Boy, do you think this rain will ever stop?” Or, if you live in the northern reaches of our province you might well ask,

“Have you ever seen snow like this before?” Well, in truth, I have.

Tony Parsons. Born in England in 1939, Tony came to Canada as a 10 year old boy. Originally wanting to be lawyer, Tony was persuaded to become a broadcaster, and after decades of broadcasting in radio and television across Canada, Tony now works for CHEK and CBC Vancouver.

During the early days of our arrival in Canada, we saw titanic snow drifts sweeping across Ontario fields and snow banks piled so high you could barely see the sun hovering over them. Some days, when even the ploughs couldn`t negotiate the rural roads, we would stay cocooned in our warm parlours gathered around blazing wood fires waiting to be rescued, but secretly hoping help might never come at least until we`d run out of books to read and grilled cheese sandwiches to munch on. We knew, as someone once said, “Bad weather always looks worse through a window.” Of course, help always came and we eventually shrugged the snow off our shoulders and slid our way back to school or work.

We live in a land of contrasts and Ontario`s weather is not what we experience in BC. So I have never seen the likes of those Eastern winters again. I`ve travelled around this province since arriving here decades ago. A lot of it I did in good company on a less than grand scale when we used to take BCTV`s News Hour on the road. Sometimes, depending on the distance to the next outpost, we had the luxury and convenience of flying. More often than not though, we used our own cars. I remember one Saturday morning, after one tour wound down, tackling the so-called “Connector” that linked Kelowna to Merritt and the Trans-Canada Highway. A snowstorm briefly escalated to dramatic proportions and left me wondering why I`d ever started the journey in the first place. Throughout the snowy ordeal, I was talking to the dog who accompanied me on the tour, reassuring him that I had learned long ago how to drive a car on an icy highway. Above. I asked Claire Martin, my weather forecasting mate at CBC Vancouver, how tough her job is…

She`s a bonafide meteorologist who says: “It`s location, location, location. I sound like a realtor, don’t I? Most of BC’s population lives in close proximity to the Pacific Ocean and so, most of us know all too well those ‘sunny today’ forecasts that end up grey, cloudy and drizzly. That`s the marine layer sliding in from off the coast. Just a slight shift in prevailing winds and that layer will slide in and ruin a forecast. For those that live in the interior,” Claire says: “BC is literally made up of Micro climates.” If you live in the valley in the autumn, you’ll see lots of foggy, grey mornings. And if you live closer to the mountains, you`ll see far more snow and clearer days. Whenever I’m asked for a forecast I always say, “Where exactly do you live in the Province?” It doesn`t come more authoritative than that I think.

There are those among us who will tell you that there`s no such thing as bad weather, just different weather. Rain can ruin your picnic, but it can also fill your rain barrel. Wind can punish, but it can blow the clouds away and make way for the sun. And sun can bake the earth, but also bring purpose to drab lives. Craigdarroch Castle boasts more than 20,000 square feet of interior space

Most of us don’t live in castles. Robert Dunsmuir didn’t either, although he dreamed about owning one. He almost succeeded, but never achieved his goal because he died suddenly before his stately home was finished. Nevertheless, Craigdarroch Castle is one of his legacies and Dunsmuir’s untimely demise was just one of many hurdles that impeded the construction of this heritage landmark. Robert and Joan Dunsmuir arrived on Vancouver Island in 1851 so Robert could work at the Hudson’s Bay Company’s coal mines at the north end of the Island, and later in Nanaimo. Once he discovered a new seam of coal, he never looked back.

To begin with, Robert had to acquire the land. He chose a spectacular site, but had to acquire it in parcels as they became available. Today we call the neighbourhood “Rockland.” In 1882, Dunsmuir acquired the first piece of land, and by the time construction began, he had amassed eleven hectares (twenty eight acres).

Dunsmuir’s wealth grew exponentially and he moved his family to Victoria where he acquired “Fairview,” the largest house in the city, located on Menzies Street. However, he longed for a country estate and planning for his castle began long before the work every commenced.

Dunsmuir then had to find the right person to make his dream come true. He chose Portland architect Warren Heywood Williams, whose previous work in Portland and Victoria was on a grand scale, including the Bank of British Columbia (now the Bard and Banker) on Government Street. After Williams prepared initial plans the contract to start the foundations was signed in September 1887. Four months later, Williams died unexpectedly and the work was taken up by his assistant, Arthur Smith.

Craigdarroch Castle took approximately 4 years to build, at a cost of $500,000 – a significant amount of money for the 1890s

Construction did not go smoothly because of a shortage of skilled tradesmen in Victoria. Stonemason John Mortimer was selected as one of the contractors, but often was forced to stop work because there were no bricklayers available to complete the interior partitions. At least the sandstone for the exterior walls was relatively easy to obtain because it came from quarries at Koksilah, owned by Dunsmuir himself. He also was a shareholder in the Albion Iron Works that supplied architectural metalwork for Craigdarroch Castle. Robert Dunsmuir died in 1889 before any of the interior finishing or landscaping was done. The entire project seemed jinxed. Who was going to manage the project now? Joan made it known that she wasn’t going to, who left on an extended European holiday with her two unmarried daughters. The unwelcome task fell to her two sons, James and Alexander, who probably had little commitment to their father’s grandiose scheme. Nevertheless, decisions were made and work continued.

Hugh Campbell, a newcomer to town, was given the landscaping contract. It was a monumental task, and he was given virtually no direction or supervision, except for the verbal instructions to do it as he thought best, as economically as possible. He had less than a year to plan and implement the work. Assisted by more than twenty Chinese labourers and nine quarrymen, Campbell created artificial lakes, terraces, carriageways and bridges in the Garry oak meadows and amidst the siteâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rocky terrain. The Dunsmuir brothers called for tenders for interior woodwork and mouldings. The Chicago firm of A. H. Andrews received the contract to provide pre-fabricated staircases, panelling, doors and everything else needed. It took five railway cars to transport the material. Woods included white oak, walnut, jarra, rosewood, maple, holly, Spanish mahogany, cherry and Hawaiian koa.

Red slate to cover the steep roofs was quarried in New York State. Beautiful stained glass windows, some of the finest in any Victorian residence in North America, were likely fabricated by an American studio, although the studio name remains unidentified. The final tally for Craigdarroch was $500,000, a staggering amount at the time. Before Joan moved into Craigdarroch Castle, her daughter Agnes and her husband died of typhoid, leaving two orphaned children. In her widowhood Joan occupied the castle with them and with three unmarried daughters. Unhappy marriages for several daughters and ongoing bickering with her two sons must have made Craigdarroch a tense place. Joan died in 1908, and the property left the family. The immense property was subdivided into 144 parcels and the castle was given away as the prize in a lottery, open to purchasers of the lots.

“In Canada, we are catching up to a trend that has been going on in Europe for decades, and that is living in smaller homes,” says Peter McCutcheon, owner of Resource Furniture BC Ltd. “Now that people are living in less space, they expect their furniture to do more.” There was a time when Murphy beds were simply wall beds. Once your guests’ left for the day, the bed was pulled up and wasn’t of any other use.

“Today, we have Murphy beds that become coffee tables or incorporate dining room tables,” says McCutcheon. “Also, today’s new Murphy beds are far easier to raise because they are driven by hydraulics … so you can adjust the hydraulic tension so even grandma can bring it down.” Even the traditional multi-functional hide-a-bed has evolved — there are some multifunctional sofas that convert into two separate swivel chairs; chairs that then fold out into two single beds. Other sofa options offer attractive storage drawers tucked underneath the seating area. Today’s dual-purpose furniture doesn’t stop there. There are coffee tables with drawers for television remotes and magazines that switch open into a desk; regular beds transform into sectional sofas; children’s play desks transforms into two beds; and drop leaf rectangular tables, which when raised, turn into a dining room sized tables able to accommodate four to six people.

In smaller spaces, closets and other hidden spaces become critical for easy living. Walk-in closets often double as storage and many condo owners have turned these spaces into an at home work station. Smart closet options, both in the kitchen and the bedroom have become a necessary element of successful small space living.

For the man cave/living room, there are even leather reclining chairs with coolers built right into one of the armrests. “There are also ottomans which can become a regular size chair,” adds McCutcheon. “There are even beds designed with shelves in the base that make wardrobes and dressers superfluous.”

It’s an ongoing evolution and the choices are getting increasingly more sophisticated and beautifully crafted. This new technology doesn’t come without a price. By comparison, versatile furniture can be more expensive than traditional furniture, but when you take into consideration the multifunctional capabilities, the price might well be worth it.

“If you want good quality you will probably pay more for multi-functional furniture, but it will last decades,” says McCutcheon. Meanwhile, there was a time when furniture was a discretionary purchase. Today, more and more consumers are going for quality pieces — ones that stand the test of time. Perhaps one of the biggest influences in smaller furniture is technology. At the forefront of the movement is Italy, where manufacturers are creating innovative and contemporary pieces by teaming up with German engineers to work on hardware that is highly technologically advanced.

“The lines coming out of Europe are extremely well-built, ergonomically functional, and are outfitted with hardware guaranteed for life,” says the longtime furniture retailer. “It might take another generation to get accustomed to this new trend, but it is one that is here to stay.”

An indoor/outdoor sensibility that harmonizes with its coastal surroundings

Windward Oaks is an enthralling collaboration between brooding, old world elegance and the inviting, location inspired setting that typifies custom homes on Vancouver Island’s southern coast. With an enormous sky and vast ocean to its back, the 13,000 square foot mansion seems to rise up out of the sea with a castle-like presence that invigorates the streetscape. Decorative Tudor styling, cedar shingles, and extensive rock work are a mixed array of finely detailed materials chosen to fulfill the homeowners’ specific requirement to make the completely new build look as though it has been there for 100 years.

The homeowners modelled their vision for the home after properties created by Samuel Maclure—a residential architect from New Westminster, B.C, widely known in Victoria for his Tudor Revival and Arts and Crafts designs. Windward Oaks homeowners selected M. Knight Construction Ltd. as builder and general contractor on the project. Mike Knight has completed more than 60 custom homes in Victoria and the Saanich Peninsula with his team of respected trade professionals; all committed to excellence, teamwork, and continuity. Owner Mike Knight is adamant about the importance of start to finish continuity. “The outcome is beautifully crafted, distinctive homes that will stand the test of time.”

M. Knight Construction provides full scale services from rock removal to turnkey completion, including carpentry, framing, and millwork. “The more services we provide in house, the more continuity we bring to the project,” says Knight. “The guys want to be able to complete the job, which is rare in the industry. The staff takes a sense of ownership over the job.” Windward Oaks was a prized project for its scale and the stylistic specifications. It is constructed on an angular, sloping lot that created an interesting challenge for project architect Michael Cullin, who is also known for his work restoring Maclure homes. One part of the lot, which boasts 550 feet of prime waterfront, is 40 feet below the elevation from another corner, which had an enormous effect on the allowable height. This challenge turned opportunity was solved by constructing a flat roof, the shape of which is hidden from the street by a series of dormers that create dimension on all sides of the home. “It isn’t the typical Maclure layout,” says Cullin. “I wanted to splay the two wings so every room had a view of the ocean or mountain, but the layout was dictated by the lot.”

A covered garden space and a 2,500 square foot boathouse are positioned along a wide granite stone path that carries along to the back of the property and on to the ocean. The property is enveloped by a curving granite stone wall that layers on the street sides creating mass and interest beyond the footprint of the home.

The blending of home and gardens was an important component of the Maclure tradition—at Windward Oaks, the “wild and tiled” mix of carefully laid stone work, sculpted lawn areas, and native plantings creates an engaging breadth of movement around the base of the home.

The grand entrance is a stone and wood detailed opening, under one of three balconies visible from the street front, and is the first hint of the majestic scale and style that awaits on the inside. The entrance foyer is a wide open, welcoming space where an exquisite display of custom millwork in vertical grain fir begins. The form and scale are large and exude uncomplicated beauty with medieval undertones, and features of Edwardian classicism. The ceilings are 12 feet in the hall and 24 feet in the great room, and even the doors are oversized at 2.25 inches thick with cast iron pulls.

Period essence is captured with wainscoting, paneling, and crown mouldings throughout. Oak flooring runs throughout most of the main floor with a classic border detail, and custom rugs—many of them Persian—are art forms in each room. To the left from the entranceway, an oversized staircase curls upward to the second level, and to the right, two pillared half walls announce the great room, which calls for attention with its meticulous, period charm and vast view of the ocean and mountains beyond.

The back wall is a panoramic ocean view through large scale picture windows that are drawn into the home’s ambiance by three rows of tiered, smaller square windows above. The central window header is curved, mimicking four exposed timber trusses that form the structural and aesthetic integrity of the space. Their moulded edges and exposed peg fastening on the trusses are careful and meticulous details. Large lantern-style chandeliers hang over the 24-foot-high ceiling, celebrating its brilliance, but also bringing it to a human scale.

Consider the Possibilities

The fireplace is shrouded in intricately detailed wood and blended hues of Pennsylvania blue stone that mosaic and pull colour from the rest of the room. Punched copper plates with a flower design are inset in the wood work, and are the first of several appearances the copper plates make throughout the home. The hammered brass plates in the fireplace, posts, and exterior gates are one element that pulls through the space. Another is a basket weave pattern in the sunroom and upstairs bathrooms, and a third is a series of handcrafted, West Coast inspired art glass pieces commissioned from a pair of artists from Mayne Island. This repetitive and celebratory use of handcrafted materials is a key element of Maclure architecture. “Because of the continuity and cohesiveness of the entire home, it reads like a pure Maclure home,” says Cullin. “This home was something genuine. There are lots of homes that have some of the features, but seldom follow through to this extent.” A fireplace fender from Victoria’s historically famous Empress Hotel wraps around the fireplace, its deep green-grey fabric paying tribute to a subtle, but rich palette set by the room’s carefully selected furniture. Three chairs in grey, green, and cream maintain an air of sophistication while the deep green of the sofa is a warm and grounding presence. The furniture collects ambiance around a simple wood and glass table where conversation can evolve in front of the fire. To the left of the great room is the dining area where eight black and gold striped chairs surround a wooden table with tinted glass centre insert. The assembly is positioned centrally in front of a brass-faced fireplace. A millwork hearth extends upward to house an inspiring piece of art, and out to either side in glass-faced cabinetry. The room closes off from the rest of the house with glass pocket doors.

Beyond the dining room, the kitchen and family room are combined at the end of the hall with the use of white cabinetry and lighter shades of beige, brown, and orange create a brighter palette that still adheres to the home’s over-arching aesthetic. Two types of granite appear in the kitchen—an orange and golden sand pattern on the perimeter counter and an orange and black pattern one on the Island. The master ensuite is a remarkable collection of features that stay with the home’s décor, but still exude the Zen-like ambiance of a spainspired environment. A glass steam shower is positioned just beyond a free-standing, jetted soaker tub that is a newer take on the traditional clawfoot tub. Double sinks are set into black granite counters with a stepped centre, contrasting beautifully with the grey and white softness of the marble floor. Directly across, Japanese maples are etched into the opaque window glass.

vince klassen Photographer, Vince Klassen, was born and raised in Victoria, BC. He shot his first photographs at the age of 9, experimented with film and video during his teens, and became a self-taught professional still photographer in 1987. Klassen has a thriving freelance photography business, and his commercial success includes dozens of corporate clients, projects with national and international publications, awards from the Graphic Designers of Canada, and his personal work has been exhibitioned and collected by the international photography hall of fame and museum. “My approach to photography is a combination of imagination, pre-visualization, and the utilization of science to obtain anything I desire. I love the challenge of creating a moment in time which explores concepts and creates beautiful and unique tableaux.”

From the boathouse, the property stretches away from the buildings and a path ends at the ocean’s feet. The patio curves and twists like the surf on a stormy day and the landscaping grows wilder the closer it gets to the ocean.

Back inside, art glass doors with inset LED lighting—wired through the hinges—open up to a fully-equipped fitness room with cork flooring and a wall of mirrors. A half bath and guest room with double beds means the homeowners’ dream of having a place their friends and family can visit comfortably has been realized. In the media room, eight recliners tip back to a wide screen TV with projector that displays movies on an electric actuated screen.

In many ways, the team reinvented the wheel at Windward Oaks, says Cullin, because contemporary homes are rarely built in this style. “Being observant about what is authentic and honoring the style and not trying to impose a contemporary aesthetic is important,” says Cullin. “With this home we were really pulling threads together and creating something genuine.” “The contractor was great with marvelous tradespersons,” he says. “It was a strong collaborative effort”. While preparing for my interview with Premier Christy Clark, I had concerns in how to approach this article. After all, Homes & Living magazine doesn’t have a political column; we primarily concentrate on beautiful homes, interior design and lifestyle editorial. I needn’t have worried. Less than five minutes into our interview, it was clear to me that Christy Clark has an amazing personal side that H&L readers would love to learn about. After all, before she bravely dived into the role as the 35th Premier of this province in March 2011, Christy Clark was a woman with a point of view, a trailblazing mother with a genuine concern for family and community, and of course, a born and raised British Columbian. Those are qualities worth talking about...

Christy Clark was born in Burnaby, BC and aside from attending school at the Sorbonne in France and the University of Edinburgh in Scotland; Christy has lived her life happily in British Columbia. Her son, Hamish, was born in 2001, making her only the second woman in Canadian history to give birth while serving as a cabinet minister [Minister of Education].

Having spent so much of her time in the public eye, either in government or as a radio personality, it is fascinating that Christy Clark has managed to keep the down to earth heart and spirit of a true British Columbian. As a woman and mother, she has learned to turn to family and the community to help raise her son, so that she can best serve her community as Premier, and be a better parent.

“In 2001, when I served as Deputy Premier, I didn’t do such a good job of juggling my family and career, and everything suffered a little bit because of it. This time around, I admitted that I needed help, and I am now much more open to ask for that support from others: my hockey parents’ family, my school parents’ family and biological family. As a result, my son Hamish has this big, wonderful family and I worry less about being a working mom who can’t be all places, at all times.” Above. She has managed to finally find balance between personal and professional obligations and felt that living in British Columbia, a place that is so accepting of different lifestyle choices and family units, makes it all possible. Premier Clark just recently returned home from a trade mission to India and China, two countries that believe that raising children is the lifelong job of the entire family and the community at large. In the Chinese and South Asian cultures, the tradition of having multiple generations in a household is still very much alive. Christy was aware of how closely these values reflected her own. “My take on it is this – the most important building block of any society is family. Governments and schools are not the people who instill character in our children. As a government, we need to recognize, support and honour the work that families do. That is at the core of why I decided to run for office.”

Christy Clark was instrumental in bringing the ‘Pink T-Shirt Day Anti-Bullying Campaign’ to British Columbia. After talking with a woman on her radio show who was a former bully, the woman challenged Christy to make a difference. “I didn’t really know what to do and then I read an article about those two boys in Nova Scotia who started the t-shirt movement and I decided to bring that to BC.” This was a life changing experience for Christy Clark, who had no idea how profoundly bullying affects so many people. She is adamant about her continuing commitment to this issue, and she reports she is working hard to get the government involved in this initiative as well.

The Personal Side Q&A: Where is your favourite vacation spot in British Columbia?

“The Gulf Islands. My family got a cottage there in 1969, and since my father was a public school teacher, we would spend every summer there. It is a special place for me where I got to spend all summer long with both my mom and my dad. It is somewhere that I still love to get away to, whenever I can.” What activities do you love to take part in with your son, Hamish?

“I used to think of myself as a runner. I love to run. Actually, if truth be told, I don’t love running but it’s the quickest and most effective way to burn off a lot of calories. I do love kayaking and own a little kayak that I like to take out whenever I have time. Also, my son and I just recently took up skiing together. It was a sport that we can do together. Hamish was amazing – four hours into our first day and he was up on the blue runs. I love it because it’s a family sport and we get to spend time on the chairlift, talking and laughing together.” In your role as Premier, what is the most important legacy you would like to leave behind for future generations of British Columbians?

Christy Clark is fiercely proud of being a British Columbian. “People will willingly share with me what’s on their hearts and what’s going on in their families. That is the best part of my job because I got into this business because I wanted to help others.” She is a firm believer that we are a province full of people who care about each other – that is one of BC’s unique and greatest qualities. “Although I was born and raised in British Columbia, we are mostly a province of people who have chosen to live here. What is better than that? I think that makes British Columbia the most special place in the country, and one of the best places in the world to live. And because people from different backgrounds choose this as home, as a people, we welcome difference here in British Columbia. I never found that when I lived in Edinburgh, Scotland or Paris, France and I missed the ocean.” Being near the ocean has a peaceful effect for Christy and she is one of those people who will always want to live near the water. Premier Clark was a pleasure to speak with. She is engaging, energetic and teeming with enthusiasm to affect positive change for the province. However, what I took away from my discussions with her was this: first, foremost and always – Christy Clark is a strong woman, concerned parent and very proud British Columbian.

In his day, Francis Mawson Rattenbury was the most famous architect in British Columbia. But, he also had many detractors who would have been quick to point out that he had several serious characters flaws, namely his vast ego and his unbearable professional arrogance. If that wasnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t enough to sully his reputation, he also had an eye for the ladies, which didnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t sit very well with some people in ultra conservative early twentieth century Victoria. All of these factors have conspired to bring him back to haunt his most famous buildings: the Parliament Buildings and the Fairmont Empress Hotel. How it all came about is a fascinating tale combining fame, love, jealousy and murder.

The handsome young architect arrived in Victoria in 1892, just in time to enter the competition to design the Parliament Buildings. The fact the he was barely twenty five years old and that he won over all the other much more experienced men, may give a clue to the animosity some of them had for him throughout his career. There were disputes over the quality of the stone, construction delays and the final cost (far in excess of original estimates), but when the official opening took place on February 10, 1898 everyone agreed that the final product was the most handsome edifice in the land. That is precisely why Rattenbury was soon doing work for the Bank of Montreal and Canadian Pacific Railway and more work for the BC government.

A haunting tale of love, jealousy and murder

In the 1920s Rattenbury fell in love with Alma Packenham, a woman half his age. His first wife, Florrie, divorced him and Rattenbury lost no time marrying his young lover. To many, the newlyweds were both pariahs and were shunned by the people Rattenbury once included as his admirers. The couple moved to Bournemouth, England, where they could start life together anew. However, their world came to a brutal end when Alma started an affair with their chauffeur, who in turn bludgeoned Rattenbury to death. Alma committed suicide when her boyfriend was convicted of murder.

Until recently, Rattenbury’s grave in the Bournemouth Cemetery was unmarked and, except for one tour guide in the town who includes the sordid details of Rattenbury’s murder in his repertoire, almost no one knows his name. Ghosts have the same needs they had as living beings and, if necessary, that they will travel long distances in search of fulfillment. Rattenbury’s ego remains, but his name is virtually ignored in Bournemouth. In Victoria, however, his reputation as a prominent architect is still well known. Why shouldn’t he return to haunt the buildings that made him famous?

Not long ago a middle aged couple from Victoria celebrated their wedding anniversary by staying two nights at the Empress. One evening they ventured into the Archives Room, an alcove off the Lower Lobby where showcases hold memorabilia from the hotel’s early days. The lady sensed someone else was there, but it wasn’t until they were heading up the staircase to the Main Lobby that they both saw him. He seemed to materialize out of nowhere and was even more remarkable because of the old-fashioned suit he wore. Then suddenly, as both were looking at him over their shoulders, he vanished into thin air. They hurried into the Bengal Lounge to calm their nerves because both knew they had just witnessed a ghost. One fact stood out in their memories: he looked oddly familiar. It wasn’t until the next morning, when they retraced their steps to reconstruct the episode, that they saw Rattenbury’s photograph hanging on the wall. “That’s him!” they both exclaimed.

Several summers ago, a young actor portrayed Rattenbury as one of the Parliamentary Players who stage dramatic vignettes during the guided tours in the Parliament Buildings. He looked remarkably like the character he was impersonating and, when fitted out in a suit similar to one the architect had worn, could have been his twin. To his amazement, many tourists told him that they had just seen someone who looked exactly like him. The odd thing was that when he asked them where they had seen him, he hadn’t been there. None of the other actors looked like, or dressed like, the one playing Rattenbury. It became obvious that Rattenbury’s ghost was roaming the corridors of the Parliament Buildings. Though some people might be frightened by the very fact they have seen a ghost, not all ghosts are scary. It’s almost certain that Rattenbury’s ghost is not intending to be nasty and has never been known to cause harm to anyone. He’s simply there because he craves the recognition denied to him in his lonely grave in Bournemouth. But, once he has been recognized, or even just noticed, he will disappear. His purpose for returning has been fulfilled.

Most home kitchens these days are flooded with sunlight, and there’s no better complement to a sunny room than the natural look of hardwood. Wood floors are comfortable, resilient, and they reflect all the natural substances prepared and served in the room in any given season. The hottest trends in kitchen flooring are for exotic woods, including previously overlooked ones like Brazilian Walnut and Siberian Birch. Also, reclaimed wood comes with the upshot of built-in character, doing away with the worry of that dreaded first mishap ding in a new floor. Whatever wood you choose, go with the broadest boards you can find: they’re most attractive, make a room look visually larger, and feel nice under the feet.

Tile floors are also a popular choice for kitchens, especially ones that incorporate stone into the countertops, and there are a tremendous number of options to suit your taste for visually stunning tile. It can make fine china endangered and mornings a bit chillier (unless you go with in-floor heating – highly recommended for any type of flooring), but there is no replacement for the classy effect of brilliant stone.

Indispensable for preparation, storage, even as a spot for informal meals, islands of all shapes and sizes are a staple of the modern kitchen. They’re also a great place to work at the laptop while cooking. If you have the space, take the plunge.

Kitchen islands are a great place to show off both your refined taste and foresight; contemporary islands come with built-in features such as microwave ovens, refrigerated drawers, and virtual wine cellars, most with digital controls discreetly placed.

Best of all, islands are highly visible and interactive, especially with bar-style seating around them; they are a fantastic way to show off your choice of exotic countertop materials, like cultured marble or attractive imported alternatives. A single slab of dazzling stone shows a taste for durability and fashion without going industrial.

No, we’re not talking the depths under the sink here; faucets and sink basins have come a long way in recent years. Elegant is the name of the game with faucets, kitchen or otherwise, and stainless still is still the preferred choice, although different finishes like oiled bronze are gaining ground. High arc or gooseneck faucets are all the rage, as are faucets with complete water filtration (and even carbonation) systems built in – say goodbye to the old, clunky plastic water filter. Manufacturers are trying hard to stay on the cutting edge of sinks, as well, with a spate of innovations popping up: copper basins benefit from the inherent antiseptic properties of the metal; black graphite and granite sinks are sleek and easy to maintain; and basins of all types are appearing with built-in amenities like cutting boards, colanders, and drying areas. The hottest trend right now is for apron-front or farmhouse sinks, large (usually square) basins that emphasize function and exude old-world style.

Reinventing Your Kitchen No Longer Means Choosing Between Style and Function

Colours that Whet the Appetite Kitchens are visually busy places, so it’s not always easy to settle on a cohesive colour scheme that incorporates all of the elements that will be in it. When appliances came in black, white, and steel finishes, it was far too easy to settle on a neutral theme that left you with a chessboard for a kitchen… but who wants to feel like a pawn for half the day? Busting out of the black-white cycle is easier now, with the variety of finishes on accessories and the return to embracing natural substances like granite and wood. Harvest colours like burnt oranges, deep reds, soft browns and faded yellows are an increasingly popular choice. Still, by all accounts this year’s “hottest” colour for kitchens is going to be grey.

Even with vintage elements like these, the overall trend for 2012 is clever combination of old and new: cabinets with built-in appliances are the future of kitchens, make no mistake. With planning, cabinets can be safely installed to seamlessly house ovens, warming drawers, and dishwasher s, tucking away the less attractive parts of our essential appliances. This makes going with brighter colours or stains – an increasing trend – a bit of a challenge, but you can look for appliances that offer alternative finishes like burnished copper to create a more even flow.

Appliances that Work The feel of the modern kitchen is still bound in some ways to its largest residents: the appliances. Thankfully, designers have been thinking outside the icebox for some time now, and the result is some fresh and funky ideas for cooking in style. Refrigerators will always be large, but that doesn’t mean they cannot be attractive. Innovations in cooling have translated into well insulated glassfronted fridges (cutting down on the sterile metal aura), as well as refrigerated drawers that hide nicely in the cabinetry. Cooktops are becoming increasingly popular, freeing the stove from the oven; the independent cooktop can be installed in convenient countertop locations separate from the aforementioned wall oven. Cooktops come in a variety of cool designs, incorporating glass and ceramic (mostly) and they can use electrical, gas, or induction methods. I’m happy it’s February. In our part of the world, it is the month where we start to see winter grey turn to longer and brighter days. It’s the month of the celebration of love. Mostly, it’s the month where we are encouraged to drink chocolate martinis! Over the years, in a bold act of seasonal rebellion, my family and I

would choose to deny the dark and cold, and we would instead, put on a ‘to hell with winter’ BBQ. We’d make burgers and potato salad and have a picnic in front of the fire. We’d blend chocolate martinis and raise a glass. “To February!” we’d say, because by this time, the fire (and the martinis) had reached all the way to our chilled bones and we knew that the season no longer had a grip on us.

Double Chocolate Martinis for TWO 1tbsp dark chocolate sea salt Mexican chili powder 4oz crème de cacao 2oz espresso flavoured vodka 8-10 oz 2% milk

I bring to you, with encouragement to do the same, our famous chocolate martini. This time though, I’ve decided to rim the glass with even more chocolate. Choose your favourite dark, and if you are brave, add a tiny pinch of Mexican chili.

Melt chocolate chips; add a small pinch of sea salt and a small pinch of chili powder. Roll the rims of 2 martini glasses in the melted chocolate and refrigerate for 30 minutes or more. Add crème de cacao, vodka and milk to a martini shaker filled with ice.

Shake until frothy. Pour into martini glasses. Garnish with chocolate shavings, gooseberries or anything you like, really.

Braised beef short ribs Start the day before. 4lbs meaty, bone in, beef short ribs, cut English style 1 bottle red wine 10 black peppercorns 4 star anise 4 whole cloves 2 cinnamon sticks 2 strips of orange zest, approx 3 inches long 4 large garlic cloves, smashed 2 bay leaves Cut ribs apart, between the bones, and trim excess fat. Season with salt and pepper. Wrap peppercorns, star anise and cloves in a square of cheesecloth and secure with kitchen twine. In a medium saucepan, bring the wine to a soft boil and add the cheesecloth pouch and the remainder of the ingredients. Reduce heat and simmer for 10 min. Remove from heat and let cool. Meanwhile, place ribs in a single layer in a long wide pan. Once the wine has cooled, pour over the ribs, arrange cinnamon, zest, garlic, bay leaves and cheesecloth bundle amongst ribs, cover and refrigerate overnight, up to 24 hours, flipping ribs once or twice.

Braising is a long, slow technique that makes the meat fall off the bone, in a tenderized tumble of deliciousness.

The best cuts of meat for braising do not have to be expensive. The marbling of fat and the connective tissue in cheaper cuts breaks down and lends itself to the tender outcome. A lean piece of beef won’t do. The best cuts are chuck flat from shoulder, or bone in beef short ribs. Ask your butcher to cut them English style.

Braised Beef Short Ribs. Serves four.

Day of. 1 large onion, chopped 1 large leek, white and light green only, chopped 2 medium carrots, chopped 2 medium celery sticks, chopped 3 large cloves garlic, smashed 4 star anise 3 sprigs thyme 2 tbsp vegetable oil Flour for dredging Salt and freshly ground pepper 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar chicken, beef or vegetable stock flour or cornstarch whisked with water to thicken Preheat oven to 300 degrees Heat oil in a large dutch oven or braising pan. Pat each rib dry and dredge through flour. (reserve marinade). Add to hot oil in batches if necessary and brown until a nice crust forms, approximately 4 minutes per side. Remove ribs from pan and put aside. Deglaze the pan with some of the marinade, scraping up brown bits. Add oil or drain fat so there is approx 1 tbsp of fat in pan. Add onions and leeks and cook approx 5 min. Add garlic, carrots, celery, anise and thyme and continue to cook until vegetables are softened and slightly browned, approx 15 minutes. Add salt and pepper. Remove vegetables from pan. Place ribs back in pan, single layer. Pour reserved marinade over ribs until it comes about halfway up the meat. Do not cover the meat. Place vegetables over top of meat. Tear off a large piece of parchment paper and press tightly over vegetables, creating a tight ‘package’. Place the lid tightly on top and put in oven. Cook for 3-4 hours, flipping ribs every hour or so. Add more marinade or stock if necessary. Remove from oven and take ribs out, tenting with foil to keep warm. Strain liquid through small sieve, pressing on vegetables to get all liquid. Place liquid in a medium saucepan and bring to a soft boil, adding flour or cornstarch to thicken if necessary. Add balsamic vinegar and season to taste. Serve ribs with mashed potatoes drizzled with truffle oil or Moroccan couscous, pouring gravy overtop. Serves 4.

I often find inspiration in my cooking equipment. For example, my dutch oven. There’s something about it that screams comfort food. That common go-to that warms hearts and bellies; even better when it doubles as a gourmet dinner for friends. Braised beef - tenderizing in the oven all afternoon, the scent of anise and red wine bubbling along with it. Serve it with truffle mashed potatoes or pearl couscous topped with the rich gravy, and be prepared for silence at the dinner table. While this recipe is long, there is a lot of downtime, while things marinate and cook. Be sure to save a few glugs of wine for yourself, when pouring the red for the marinade.

Right. While it is usually the form and the context which draws me to paint a particular arbutus, one summer morning I decided to make a study of the peeling bark, attempting to come to terms with its unique surface and colour.

When I am not busy painting homes and gardens of Victoria, I paint the nearest arbutus tree. The radiant orange bark of the arbutus madrona, lit by the golden rays of sunset, stands out in the dark forest; the sinuous contortions of its branches make a charming counterpoint to the upright firs; the silky skin of the arbutus, almost human, begs to be stroked. The spirit of this place lives in the arbutus, and she is feminine.

Arbutus are rare north of Nanoose Bay, and not seen at Port Renfrew on the west coast. Known as the Pacific Madrone in America, it occurs as far south as the San Gabriel Mountains in California. The arbutus tree is at home on the east coast of Vancouver Island. You can also see it on the adjacent islands and nearby mainland coast. Victoria has an Arbutus Road (beyond the University) and Arbutus Way (on the north edge of Beacon Hill Park). Arbutus trees form a canopy along Torquay Road near Gordon Head.

The arbutus is a contradiction, Canada’s only native broadleaf evergreen. The west coast arbutus madrona was named for its resemblance to the Mediterranean strawberry tree (A. unedo), as Arbutus means ‘strawberry tree’ in Latin, and madrono is Spanish for “strawberry tree”. Ours is the Arbutus menziesii, named for the botanist who came with Captain Vancouver on his voyage of discovery.

Tourists are fascinated by the massive arbutus tree at Victoria’s Empress Hotel The contorted multi-limbed trunks often grow tenaciously from rocky outcrops. Because of its inability to compete with conifers on better growing sites, it forms a twisted under-storey among firs or chooses open sites with poor soils. Willing to endure dense shade, it requires at least partial top light for best growth. It seems to be happiest near the sea and thrives under the influence of fog. In favourable locations, the arbutus can be a stately tree from 60 to 80 feet high, with a straight clean trunk 2 to 3 feet in diameter. Large drooping clusters of fragrant white flowers, said to smell like buckwheat honey, form in the spring and resemble lilies of the valley. The round, orange-red berries appear in the fall and, though not eaten by humans, they are popular with birds. I have often painted a healthy specimen standing in the parking lot at the top of Beacon Hill. It has bright orange skin, peeling as the tree grows to reveal patches of soft green. On the upper stem, limbs and twigs this skin is very thin, peeling off in irregular flakes, as it does on a sycamore. That “soft green” which is revealed is a sort of pistachio colour, or olive drab, showing areas of yellow ochre where the flakes peel back. On the lower trunk the bark is brown and loosely scaly, especially on the side away from the wind and weather. You can understand why it is a challenge for an artist.

Canada’s only native broadleaf evergreen, the arbutus is a protected species If you have tried to bring one home you know it does not transplant easily. When people see me painting an arbutus they often tell me that they don’t like the ones in their yard at home. Apparently they are “messy” growers, throwing off leaves and branches all year round. And, because they are a protected species, you can’t just cut one down. You really have to accommodate yourself to an arbutus. The First Nations of this area held the arbutus in special regard. In a Straits Salish story, told by the late Chief Phillip Paul of the Saanich people, arbutus was the tree used by the survivors of the Great Flood to anchor their canoe to the top of Mount Newton. To this day, the Saanich people do not burn arbutus in their stoves, because of the important service this tree provided long ago.

Above. My friend Jim commissioned me to paint his favourite arbutus at his father’s home on Mayne Island. The sun sparkle on the water was a delight to capture, and as I stood on the deck my hosts plied me with sandwiches and wine. I call this “ideal working conditions”.

Above. Ted and Phyllis loaned me a boat to row out into Silva Bay, a sheltered waterway at the south tip of Gabriola Island. There is a deserted islet there where I imagine myself as Robinson Crusoe. Entirely undisturbed, I spent a few hours painting this grove of trees seen against the distant shoreline of the Coastal Range.

That said - I’ve heard it is a very good hard wood to burn. Apparently it makes excellent charcoal. Because of its irregularly curving shapes and tendency to crack, it’s not often used for cabinet making. The dense, heavy, close-grained wood is pale reddish-brown with thin whitish sapwood; it cuts like soft wood when green, and becomes brittle when dry.

Above. The deck at Windsong, a hilltop home on Gabriola Island, provided me with expansive vistas but in this case I chose to paint a view looking directly into the woods. It’s a bit of a jungle, which makes painting the arbutus even more of a challenge.

Personally, I am content to just look. That gorgeous inflection of orange among the deep green forest catches my eye every time. Previous experience with area rugs leads me to believe I grew up amid the machine-made variety, which (call me Capricorn); in my mind has always meant “crap.” I didn’t know tapestries too precious to be stood on existed. I didn’t know all area rugs weren’t crap.

My mother seemed to understand the value of area rugs, however, which seemed to her an innate appreciation of the art form. She did the best she could on her modest Saskatchewan budget, but had she access to the disposable income, I’m sure our home would have been adorned with at least one Persian trendsetter, if not matching Persians for our pooches, their names etched into sacred geometric shapes upon which they slept and astral traveled into the night through clouds of bacon.

Even if she didn’t consciously know that the three-dimensional medallions on Persian rugs hold keys to unconsciousness states of being, I’m sure the Leo inside my mother secretly knew. Leos, after all, know everything, which is probably why they’re never surprised. If a red carpet can be the centre of attention and praise for millennia, so, too, can a Leo. Ancient rugs inspire the true art of celebrating the self, a celebration no Leo should ever be chastised for. The Centre of Attention is a happy place where Leos go to be played with as shiny things.

The oldest known surviving carpet, the Pazyrych, dates back to the 5th century B.C.

From the geometrically complex Ayacucho designs of Peru, to the wildly contemporary sisal rugs of Brazil, area rugs play a significant role in the artistic traditions of cultures worldwide. The art of carpet and rug weaving dates back to 3000 B.C. when nomadic tribes in Turkey and Mongolia wove rugs from camels, sheep and goats to keep earthen floors warm. The oldest surviving area rug, the Pazyrych carpet, and was discovered in 1949 in the Pazyryk Valley of the Siberian Altai Mountains. Although exact origins remain unknown, the ancient carpet dates back to the fifth century B.C. and exhibits qualities found in most Oriental rugs, except it has a red field enclosed by two borders instead of one, and features design motifs seen in Persian and Assyrian architecture, rich colours absorbing symmetrical patterns and a handknotted technique still popular today.

Scheherazade undoubtedly understood the innocent seduction of magic when she told the story of Aladdin and his flying carpet. Hand made area rugs captivate and seduce like shiny, sparkly women. At their finest, most living Leos embody all three qualities with honour and ease. If we consider the essence of a woman “divine superfluous beauty” and define art as such, then it makes sense to treat area rugs as art in the home. My mom instinctively knew this.

The Spring of Khosrows, one of the most magnificent carpets ever made (to a Capricorn or a Leo anyways) dates back to 550 B.C. and belonged to the King of Persia, who was most likely a Leo. My dad also happens to be a Leo, and I can imagine him strolling across a rug of that magnifitude for hours, eyes wide open and endlessly scanning all the shiny things sparkling up at him from the floor. Of course that enormous carpet made of wool, silk, gold, silver and precious stones weighed a few tons! It belonged to a royal class of Leo!

Luckily for my clean Capricorn tastes, though, my mom would have never considered the tattered Pazyrych a dĂŠcor option upon which to construct her home. And, since our four-level-split couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t accommodate the Spring of Khosrows, my mother would have opted for an aesthetically pleasing Persian. Of course she knew (and knows) Persian rugs are among the most exquisite investment purchases you can make for your home.

Nowadays in carpet stores throughout Vancouver Island and the mainland, you’ll see Persian rugs that mimic IKEA designs and IKEA designs that mimic Persian rugs. The Persians can take credit for some of the most beautiful rugs ever created, but all hand-made area rugs—from Turkey, Nepal and beyond—are full of inconsistencies, making them investment pieces that will only ever appreciate in value; no two carpets are alike and each is a gift from the divine as honest as birds chirping. But, like Paramahansa Yogananda said, a carpet is just a carpet, shiny or otherwise. What happens in a society—a human race— that’s racing towards a mountain like a tidal wave? Rome is a less dense representation of what we humans face in the adversity of dire economic times; the environment can’t sustain current rates of consumption. (Insert technological revolution here.) How are we different from Rome? Judging from artifacts, the Romans at least supported their artists. Somewhere along the line, modern society forgot that artists form an integral part of ‘culture and tradition’.

From January 27 to May 6, 2012, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria will boldly go where no Canadian gallery has gone before by hosting Throw Down, an exhibition both controversial and necessary for the health of an otherwise burgeoning Canadian arts community. The exhibition will showcase five artists who currently choose to stay in BC and contribute to their communities as artists, and, in many cases, as educators, administrators, promoters and writers. Featured artists include Sonny Assu, Gregory Ball, Megan Dickie, Tyler Hodgins, Alison MacTaggart, contributing writer Wendy Welch and catalogue designer Ross Macaulay. Nicole Stanbridge, Associate Curator of Contemporary Art at AGGV, defines the act of throwing down as “celebrating something in a big way, fighting for something meaningful or contributing resources to make things happen.” Megan Dickie’s 2009 sculpture Submission instigated a conversation between Dickie and Stanbridge, and incidentally, the premise of the show. “The Submission sculpture is a controversial piece in that it critiques Canada’s primary arts funding agency,” says Dickie. “AGGV is the first institution that has been willing to take a risk and show this work.” Submission, an adult scale bop-bag in the shape of the Canada Council logo, speaks to the shared challenges faced by artists, institutions and funding agencies to keep art thriving in BC. Currently Dickie teaches in two departments at the University of Victoria to support herself and her practice, and struggles to maintain workstudio balance.

“A significant portion of my teaching salary goes toward my art practice, which results in a bit of a catch-22 situation,” Dickie says. “I need to work more to pay for larger, more ambitious sculptures, but by working more I have less time to create those sculptures.” It is well known that many artists – painters, sculptors, writers and actors alike - tend to have many unrelated jobs that pay the bills and support their artistic endeavours. The extent to which artists sacrifice to make things happen embodies this spirit of throwing down. Stanbridge hopes this exhibition draws attention to the circumstances most artists face, and could perhaps pave the way for artists to just be artists. “Art becomes about popular consumption in the corporate model,” says Stanbridge. “To have enough resources to allow artists to continue to be creative is really important.” If artists and the practice of art were able to thrive in modern society, then artists wouldn’t be throwing down to save Canada’s creative workforce. The Beatles were on to something when they sang, “all you need is love.” And art, after all, is the purest expression of love.

In 1960, the first working laser was used. The following year saw the first medical use of a Ruby laser which treated retinal tumors of the eyes. As tools, lasers have revolutionized our ability to treat the skin. Over the last half a century, this evolution has opened up possibilities of treating sun damage ranging from premature wrinkles and lines to brown spots, dilated red and blue vessels and even precancerous sun spots. There are four aspects of aging skin, termed the 4-D’s • Deterioration – this refers to the skin itself – approximately 90% of our skin’s aged appearance is from sun damage – lasers help address this • Deflation – we lose volume as evidenced by hollowing around the eyes, cheeks and mouth – dermal fillers address this by supporting and lifting • Descent - skin laxity, a result of collagen loss, leads to jowls and neck folds – this can be addressed non-invasively with focused ultrasound and pulsed radiofrequency therapies • Dynamic lines – this refers to excess lines such as frown and crows feet lines due to over expression – Botox is the common treatment used to soften these lines

Dermal fillers have also evolved such that we treat the entire face rather than simply chase wrinkles. By restoring lost volume, more natural and longer sustained results are possible such as with the non-animal hyaluronan fillers like Restylane and Juvéderm. Botox has been around for over 20 years and while being a worldwide phenomenon, it originated here, in Canada – Vancouver in fact. Paradigm shifts have occurred that have led to more natural and better results while reducing risks and minimizing downtime.

If there is a cautionary point, it is the footnote that, concurrent with the rapid evolution of technologies, there is also a rapid increase in treatment providers which include many non-physicians such as dentists, nurses and nail technicians. For the public, the lines are blurred when they seek treatments with so-called aesthetic specialists who are not true medical specialists. Their learning curves are necessarily steep and they do not have the knowledge that a five year Residency and Royal College certification in Dermatology provides to properly diagnose and treat the skin.

One of the greatest winter treats in British Columbia is experiencing stormy weather on the west coast of Vancouver Island. One of the few places in the world where bad weather can be a really good thing, storm watching is a wondrous West Coast spectacle on British Columbia’s Pacific Rim. All winter long, a low pressure system builds, delivering storm after storm of natural spectacle – raging waters, turbulent shorelines and mesmerizing storm watching. One of the best places to witness the angry winter seas is in Ucluelet, BC, and specifically from the viewpoints at Black Rock Oceanfront Resort. The oceanfront suite we checked into was the epitome of understated elegance and no amenity was overlooked. Our guestroom featured a large living area with fireplace, complete gourmet kitchen with separate dining room, splendid sleeping quarters, and spa-inspired bathroom with heated floors, soaking tub and rain showers, and a furnished balcony with the most remarkable views. If you come to the Pacific Rim to do a little storm watching, the private terraces at Black Rock are where you want to be. The unobstructed views were too amazing for words and the crashing wave show and ever changing marine scenery was just metres from the balcony. Karen and I only see each other a few times a year, so we had a lot of girl talk to catch up on, and given the extremely warm and cozy room, it would have been easy to stay put, with a few bottles of good wine, for the entire weekend. GARDEN Splendour Planning a Spring Garden – How to Choose Plants for Our Climate Words by Pat Burkette

Preparing soil for spring planting isn’t just about digging and weeding. Savvy gardeners get down and dirty with their soil’s pH, texture, and nutrient content. Soil pH, which is a measure of soil alkalinity or acidity on a scale of 0 (acid) to 14 (alkaline), should ideally fall between 6.5 and 7, a level where most nutrients in the soil are available to plants. You can test soil pH with a kit from a garden centre. Gary Lewis, owner of Vancouver’s Phoenix Perennials, recommends home gardeners not worry too much about moderate pH variances. “Most soils in our area are slightly acidic due to the winter rains and the fact that this area was originally a conifer forest, but most garden plants are really quite tolerant of a range of pH,” explains Lewis. Plants may not be as tolerant of soils that are too wet or too dry. To identify, and then improve, your soil’s texture, grab a handful and squeeze hard. You’re aiming for a ball that crumbles easily when you open your hand. If the soil holds together as a firm ball, you’ll need to amend with more organic matter, like peat moss. Working wet soil can

compact and damage its’ structure, so let it dry out before you do a lot of digging. For longer term solutions, observe and correct drainage in your garden, considering bioswales planted with water loving plants to absorb excess rainwater. To boost soil nutrients, all soils will benefit from the addition of compost or well-aged manure prior to planting, about a 5 cm. layer in both spring and fall. Early spring is a good time to rejuvenate your plant collection, along with your soil. Move shrubs before they leaf out, and generally, prune summer or fall flowering shrubs before they bud out. Cut out dead and woody stalks on perennials. When new growth is about 4 inches tall, dig and divide perennials for re-planting and re-positioning. Hostas, daylilies and mums can be divided in March. Remove old canes from roses and cut back healthy canes by about a third. Dormant lime sulphur spray, to stop bugs in their tracks, can be applied now. Rhododendrons, camellias and azaleas can also be fertilized, with plant specific fertilizer. Whether you’re moving existing plants, or choosing new ones, right plant/ right place is the garden mantra to remember. Consider sun exposure, shade, water, wind, and eventual size of plant when you’re matching plant to place. Although southern BC gardeners should choose plants suitable for climate zone 8, trying an occasional marginal (a plant for a slightly higher climate zone) can be fun.

In southern BC, early spring is the time to lay a strong foundation for this year’s garden by conditioning soil, pruning, dividing and moving plants, choosing new plants, and starting seeds.

Lewis cautions gardeners really need to temper passion with planning when making plant selections. “You find a new snazzy, sexy plant, but you have to ask, do I have the right place for it?” Both newbie and experienced plantaholics will make better plant choices by visiting greatplantpicks.org. Here, expert gardeners take the guess work out of choosing plants for our area by regularly selecting and describing outstanding plants. Why not try growing some of your new plant choices from seeds? Easy annuals to try growing indoors six to eight weeks before planting outside include: cleome, nicotiana, snapdragons, impatiens, petunias, ageratum and lavatera. Hardier annuals to plant right in the ground after danger of frost are sweet peas, marigolds, cosmos, annual poppies, nasturtium and zinnia, calendula. To start seeds indoors, take note of the germination time on the seed packet, and the date of the last spring frost in your area (usually after March 30), so you can time seedlings for outdoor planting. Use a good seed starting mix in clean containers, and follow seed packet instructions for depth of planting. Containers should be kept moist, but not soggy, until the seeds germinate. Then give the containers bright light and warm temperatures, 65 to 70 degrees. When seedlings are a couple of inches high, they can be transplanted into individual containers. When they have a third set of leaves, the plants can be hardened off in a cold frame or outdoors for a few hours at a time. Before you know it, you’ll be watching them, and the rest of your garden, flourish.

Words by Jill Lang Think of BC as synonymous with Arizona or Florida. The West Coast is Canada’s paradise, a home away from home in the heart of nature’s gleaming elegance, where golf courses flock like the salmon of Capistrano. More and more Canadian retirees are purchasing investment properties in BC as opposed to warmer counterparts to the south, because you can golf all year round and keep health insurance costs down. Snowbirds looking to purchase property in BC should first choose where on Vancouver Island they want to invest (Victoria or Nanaimo, perhaps), and then find a real estate agent who absorbs the ebbs and flows of the market. To determine the exact use of the property (investment vs. rental), the agent should be equipped to offer realistic estimates on costs, including mortgage payments, property taxes and strata maintenance fees, as well as offer suggestions to maximize revenue: location, location, location.

With location in mind, the core is usually a better investment. Retirees generally choose BC’s West Coast for its sparkly water, so residential enclaves around a city’s centre are typically a good investment. In Victoria, snowbirds can be found regaling the James Bay, Fairfield and Oak Bay areas for part of the year and choose city life because it gives them access to entertainment, shopping, musicals, fitness—everything. If you want to enjoy all the conveniences of everyday life and maximize your revenue potential in the furnished rental market, occupy the city hub; the majority of clientele prefer to stay close to the core.

However, properties purchased solely for investment [and rented out unfurnished] tend to have a wider selection to choose from. Local real estate professionals state that condos are the wave of the future. Researching the condo market before you invest may indicate a higher demand for studio and one bedroom suites in the furnished market, for example, and two bedroom suites in the unfurnished market. Keep in mind that the demand for specific types of suites is volatile in a soft market, which means it’s not always easy to predict the future. Some real estate brokers handle both sales and property management; otherwise any realtor can point snowbirds towards a licensed property management company, too. Because managing a residence from out of town can get complicated if a problem arises in the building or with a tenant, a local management company will provide all necessary services, anticipated or not, including voting on behalf of snowbirds at council meetings. An industry standard fee that property management companies charge is 10% ($130 a month if the property rents for $1,300), and any other costs above that, the unit owner pay out of their snow-filled pockets.

Eat smaller meals more often Adopting this pattern provides a number of great benefits to both your health and weight loss goals. You’re less likely to overeat, and you’ll have a regular flow of energy to help keep you active, all the while your body will be burning calories more efficiently. If you skip meals your body will store what you eat as fat because it doesn’t know when it is going to get more energy.

Drink cold water The Canada Food Guide suggests we drink 8 or more glasses of water a day. Water intake helps with the

digestion and abortion of vitamins and essential nutrients. Here’s a hint: Drink your water cold! Cold water takes more energy to heat the water back up to body temperature, thus making your metabolism work harder for you.

Eat your food spicy! Eating spicy food boosts your body’s production of heat and the activity of your sympathetic nervous system (responsible for our fight or flight response), creating a spike in your metabolism.

Don’t stress the carbs Everyone is worried about carb intake, but in reality eating the right carbohydrates will also boost your metabolism. Healthy complex carbohydrates (fruits, vegetables and grains) fuel your metabolism. Consuming slow digesting, long lasting carbs like oatmeal, brown rice, whole grain cereal, whole wheat breads and pastas, as well as vegetables like broccoli, asparagus and squash, will make you feel full longer. Eating complex carb also makes your body work harder during the digestion process, which in turn burns more fat and maximizing your metabolism.

Two Vancouver Island companies, Vancouver Island InsuranceCentres Inc. and SunFM (part of Vista radio) have partnered to make the 2012 Anti-Bullying Campaign bigger and better than ever – reaching more schools, more youth and more families on Vancouver Island than ever before. Vancouver Island InsuranceCentres has been insuring generations of islanders since 1863. With 14 branches, VIIC and its employees lives, plays raises their families in the communities that they do business, so they take a very personal interest in important issues. This year, VIIC has designed, ordered and paid for 20,000 pink t-shirts, that will be distributed free of charge to school aged children. SunFM is a central island radio station with a wide play region and devoted listening audience. From January 9th through the end of February, SunFM has pledged more than $15,000 in online air time to ensure people are talking about the Anti-Bullying Campaign. SunFM has also committed to advertising on their website and through special events t-shirt distribution. PinkWall.ca is a new online resource with downloads for parents and teachers, enabling them to begin the difficult discussions with kids of all ages. There is also a section for children who can download colouring pages and enter a VIIC contest. The best part of PinkWall.ca is the Stand Up to Bullying Wall – an online wall where website visitors of all ages can sign their name on the virtual wall to show their support for this worthwhile initiative.
