Ready… set… renovate! When you say the word ‘renovate’, most people instantly relate that word to home renovation and property restoration. So had I, until now. Recently, in the midst of research, I came across a published definition with a slightly different tone, which defined renovation as the act of improving by renewing and restoring. It didn’t say anything about hammers, nails, construction or housing. This particular version doesn’t relate to housing specifically; simply renewal and restoration.

An interesting take as it has been a time of personal renovation for me. In March, we said a loving goodbye to our cherished 13-year old Golden Retriever, Sunnie. British Columbia is a province filled with dog lovers, so I know that many of you understand my grief. However, what also arose was the realization that, as a family, we had to rebuild – or renovate – our daily lives to living without her. I find it fitting that this life changing event would coincide with H&L’s Annual Renovation Issue. After all, a home renovation is also a very personal experience, and the ways in which we repurpose and rejig our living spaces impacts our lives; causing us to alter how we live in the new footprint of our renovated homes.

H&L’s Renovation Guide [page 81] is a comprehensive 32-page how-to renovation reference, covering everything from major bathroom and kitchen renovations, to flooring, windows and paint colour
considerations. Of particular note, the Guide to Hiring a Contractor [page 108] is a must read if you are planning a home renovation project. I am honoured to share with Homes & Living magazine readers my interview with legendary hit man and native British Columbian, David Foster. I spent time talking with him about his childhood in Victoria, the upcoming Miracle Concert and the good works happening daily within the David Foster Foundation. H&L’s celebrity profile article [page 30] provides a glimpse into the private side of this proud Canadian. One of the most common ways to increase a home’s value is to finish unused or “found” space. Basements or lower levels, which often come unfinished in new homes and require updating in older homes, are an excellent place to invest money.

Perhaps one of the biggest problems with lower level spaces is the lack of natural light. This can be resolved in several ways so that the atmosphere feels more like bright main-floor spaces. Recessed halogen pot lights, commonly used throughout the main and second floors are an excellent ceiling light source for basements. Add warmth and character with the addition of task and accent lighting where possible, particularly in areas where it’s most needed. In the games room add a chandelier or pendant light over a pool table or card table to bring the light down and closer to the surface.
Create a focal point and add a little drama. This is something often overlooked in lower-level rooms. Install an electric or gas fireplace to make the space more inviting and comfortable or create a media wall designed with shelves to hold the TV, stereo, books and decorative accessories and help keep the room tidy. To really make your feature area stand out, paint this wall a different colour from all the others so it commands attention in the room.

In addition to lighting an inexpensive way to brighten dark spaces is with paint. Choose a colour that has a yellow undertone. Colours that are tinted using yellow tend to reflect more light. This doesn’t mean that you have to pick light yellow but instead consider gold, caramel or café latte hues. To further enhance the warmth and luminosity of a room, tint your white ceiling paint with a touch of yellow so the lighting reflects onto it and a pale golden glow reflects back.

Once all the constructions and painting is complete it’s time to decorate. Formerly a space where old furniture went to die, furnishing with cast-offs just won’t cut it in your new space. Designed for hours of family relaxation and entertaining it’s important to choose durable furnishings that are comfortable and stylish. Purchase sofas and chairs made from solid hardwood and upholstered in fabrics like microfibres or weaves that will stand the test of time. Select pieces that can be easily taken down the stairs. Sectional sofas with slim arms and an optional chaise lounge are a great solution and will offer a more relaxed look and feel to the space. Upholstered swivel chairs offer flexibility in a multi-purpose room as you can turn them to catch all the activities going on in the space. For those of us who love kick back and put our feet up while snacking and watching the big game, a large ottoman upholstered in leather or vinyl rather than a coffee table is a practical and stylish solution. Ottomans are softer and safer, given what may happen in an active recreation room and they can double-duty as extra seating.

What can I say about David Foster? After so many years in the music industry, the hundreds of families helped through his foundation, and countless media interviews, I wondered whether there was anything about this great man that I could say that had not already been written about numerous times before. During our conversation, I found myself taking great comfort in the inflection in his voice, as he talked about his hometown on Canada’s Vancouver Island. His palpable Canadian pride made me remember how great it is to live here, in British Columbia, and I began to think that perhaps there is a little-told coastal side to the legendary hit man.

What many may not know about David Foster is that he always listened to his mother, and in particular, one life altering request. In 1986, the David Foster Foundation was formed, not too long after David was asked by his mother, Eleanor to visit a young girl from Victoria who was in an L.A hospital, awaiting a liver transplant. The little girl was in the intensive care unit and David was overcome with emotion and concern after talking with her and her parents. The child had one wish; to see her sister who was back home in Victoria. After paying for the flight, David’s life was forever changed when he saw the look in the little girl’s eyes, after being reunited with her sister. The little girl did not survive the transplant, but her spirit lives on in the David Foster Foundation and every family that has been helped in the last twenty five years.

David may have left his hometown of Victoria at aged 16, but all these years later, there is nothing contrived about David Foster’s connection to British Columbia. “I have to have that injection of British Columbia at all times. It’s just something I must do. It’s not even a choice for me”. David seems to keep his Canadian roots in the forefront of his life, and perhaps this is what keeps him so grounded in the present.

During a press conference earlier this year to announce the Oak Bay Beach Hotel/David Foster Foundation collaboration, David had kind words for his hometown. “The one thing I know for sure is – I love Victoria. I still have a little more work left to do, but this is where I will be coming home to live, for sure.” It has been announced that David will be in very good company when he rolls into town for the David Foster & Friends 25th Anniversary Miracle Concert; bringing with him the Canadian Tenors, Josh Groban, Kenny G and American Idol winner Ruben Studdard. When asked about other star power he would be bringing to Victoria on May 26th (Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre in Victoria), he was gracious but gave nothing away, “I’m just going to do my best to bring the world to Victoria. This place deserves to have the world brought here.” I had the privilege of interviewing David because of his connection to the Oak Bay Beach Hotel, and their grand re-opening in May 2012. Hotel owners, Kevin and Shawna Walker, have endowed $2M to the David Foster Foundation, and named the hotel’s new dinner theatre after the foundation. Kevin Walker is proud of the partnership. “May 25th is the beginning of a very unique 10-year collaboration between the Oak Bay Beach Hotel and the David Foster Foundation. We are very proud to be supporting this foundation that is the only one of its kind supporting families of children who require life-saving organ transplants.”

David Foster will go down in history as one of the most influential music makers – perhaps of all time - not just in Canada but around the globe. In 1995, David Foster received the Order of British Columbia and became an Officer of the Order of Canada in 2006. Foster has won 16 Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe for Best Original Song, been nominated for three for an Academy Award for Best Original Song and in 2010, David was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. The funny thing is… after speaking at length with him, I don’t think these awards mean as much to him as the memory he carries with him of the look in that little girl’s eyes some twenty five years ago.

It is hard to believe that there are people on this Earth that pack so much into every single day – launching the careers of today’s superstars, enriching the lives of families, and still managing to find time to produce a Broadway musical, tour, perform and yes, live – happily. David Foster is one of those rare individuals that do it all, seemingly without effort and very, very well; a Canadian who has unquestionably made his mother, and his native country, proud.

Did you grow up in a musical family? “Funny you should ask that question. For three years now, I have been working on the musical ‘Betty Boop’ and it is finally coming to fruition. When I was a boy, my father taught me to play stride, ragtime piano, which was invaluable to me and the most treasured gift. Plus, growing up in a family with little money, my mother and father found a way to pay for classical music lessons. Having my father teach me ragtime piano has come full circle, and it is skills that I am relying on heavily as I work on this musical. My musical beginnings are important to me.”

Spring Cottage Words by john adams
The picturesque Victorian “cottage” at 301 Kingston Street still turns heads in its quiet enclave in James Bay, as it has done for the last 120 years. It was a good address back in 1891 when Captain Charles Spring arranged to build there. The president of the Victoria and Sidney Railway had the place next door, St. James’s Anglican Church was across the street and the Kingston Street School was at the end of the block. It was a respectable neighbourhood, but Captain Spring and his new bride, Agnes Dowdall, first used the house as revenue property.

Charles Spring was born in New Westminster, but came to Victoria as a boy. His father, Captain William Spring, was a well-known sealing skipper and trader on the coast. Charles inherited his father’s business interests, including a trading post at Kyuquot where he and Agnes made their home until the mid1890s. They were ruined financially when sealing was banned in the Bering Sea and for the next five years they lived in their Kingston Street home before selling it.

John Teague was a good choice as architect. His reputation was established with such fine structures as Victoria City Hall. In 1891 he visited San Francisco to study the latest architectural styles and it was soon after his return that Captain Spring’s
commission came across Teague’s drawing board. The Queen Anne style had taken San Francisco by storm and Teague used a very elaborate version of it for what he called the “cottage” on Kingston Street. When new, it was assessed at $5,300. The specifications, dated September 4, 1891, are in the possession of the current owners of the house. It is obvious that the architect intended the place to be solidly built. “Proper stone footings” six inches thick were to be laid as the base for brick foundation walls enclosing the basement. Posts supporting the house were to be 6 inch by 6 inch posts set on beds of “large sized quarried stone.” Main beams across the posts were to be 6 inches by 8 inches; floor joists were to be 2 inches by 8 inches on sixteen inch centres; and, sub-flooring was to comprise 1 inch by 10 inch planks laid diagonally “and well nailed to each joist.” The finished floors were to be of 1 inch by 4 inch tongue and groove “well seasoned, not laid until the building is enclosed.” As was typical in the 1890s, the house was to be heated by fireplaces. The front bedroom mantel was to be of cedar at a cost of $12 and the grate was to cost $10. Teague specified that all of the grates were to be cast by Victoria’s Albion Iron Works, one of BC’s foremost iron foundries.

When new, the cottage was assessed at $5,300
Interior walls and ceilings were to be finished in lath and plaster. The first plaster coat was to be “brown mortar made of fresh burnt lime and sharp clean sand and good plasterer’s hair.” This was to be mixed at least eight days before being used. The finish coat was to be Plaster of Paris with a “smooth and polished surface.” In the parlor, reception room, dining room and vestibule a 24-inch wide stucco cornice was to go around each room.
The roof was to comprise the best quality sawn cedar shingles laid 4½ inches to the weather. Three bands of decoratively cut shingles, with four shingles to each band, were to run around all the roofs. The roofs were to be stained with two coats and each of the three decorative bands was to be a different colour.
Wood graining - painted patterns resembling expensive woods - was to adorn the doors and casings in the principal rooms. The dining room and vestibule were to be in imitation antique oak; the parlor, reception room and two bedrooms to be in imitation cherry. All other woodwork in the house was to be painted.

Captain Spring sold the house in 1900 and a series of other owners and tenants came and went. Gradually the “cottage” fell into disrepair as the James Bay neighbourhood became run down. In the 1950s and 1960s the area was slated for redevelopment, but in 1972 heritage activists managed to change that and slowly Kingston Street became a showplace. In the 1970s, Max and Janet Andersen began a painstaking renovation of the “cottage.” It was not a strict restoration, but their work was sympathetic to the original character and detailing. It is now a designated heritage building. Work on an old house is never finished and its new owners, Luke and Erin Ronsse, are looking forward to enjoying their Queen Anne home, with a copy of John Teague’s original specifications close to hand.

A home renovation without take-out? It is possible!
I grew up with green shag carpet and velour wallpaper in a shiny hue of gold; mirrored walls, tethered phones and brown kitchen appliances. If you are at all familiar with the charm of the seventies, you can relate. Our house was always kind of stuck there, and even as a kid, I longed to update those rooms to the bright yellows and whites of the era. To take up the green shag and allow the shiny fir wood floors underneath to breathe. This never happened during my time of living in that house, but the experience has created in me a penchant for ‘imagination decorating’ - stepping into a room and moving walls, adjusting doorways, adding windows and details. While I have, once in my life, built from scratch, I know it does not compare to the manic panic I’ve seen in the eyes of friends who have decided to do a major renovation… and not move out. While this poses some very real challenges, renovations are also fun and rewarding. The end result of the perfect dream home makes it worth even the seventh take-out pizza. I quote my friend: “Reno’s aren’t all that bad provided you: never eat vegetables; do your shopping at 7-11; never, ever work out; are good with making desperate phone calls to Chinese restaurants at 9pm at night to feed your children; do not require clean underwear; are perfectly comfortable dangling from 18 ft beams while painting; are fine with drinking your cup of paint instead of your cup of wine; are not above using your feminine wiles with contractors and salesman. And last but not least, are okay with never, ever sleeping in the same bed as your husband. Yup, I. am. just. (twitch, twitch) fine.” While renovations are in progress, we do what we can to avoid the fast food burger, refrain from extra cheese and work on getting dinner on the table (whatever that may look like) in good time.

While a personal chef and nutrition consultant would be ideal, the next best thing is make ahead, healthful dishes with minimal cleanup and a short stack of cooking vessels. Who cares if the fridge is in the living room? We can do this.

1 large loaf of sourdough (enough for 10 cups of cubes), hard crusts removed, cut into 1” pieces 1/3 cup olive oil 1/3 cup fresh herbs, chopped (oregano, thyme, rosemary), divided pinch salt/pepper 8 eggs 1 ½ cups chicken broth 2 ½ cups milk 10 oz box of frozen chopped spinach, thawed, drained 1.5 cups of your favorite mushrooms, chopped 2 large shallots, finely chopped 3 green onions, chopped 3 cloves garlic, minced 1 tsp Dijon mustard 1 cup of grated (or chopped) cheese (Gruyere, Swiss or sharp cheddar) 2/3 cup of marinated artichoke hearts or roasted red peppers, or a combination of spoon of butter for greasing pan

Go to your local deli and grab cheeses, meats, pickles, roasted red peppers, olive tapenade, hummus, baba ganouj and a baguette. Enjoy with your favorite red wine. Cut up your favorite veggies – potatoes, yams, onions, zucchini, eggplant, mushrooms. Toss in olive oil and salt and pepper and roast in the oven at 350 for 40 minutes. Add your favourite white wine. Buy whole wheat tortillas and cover with tomato sauce, herbs, vegetables and cheese. Bake in oven until lightly browned. Red or white works here!
Preheat oven to 310 degrees. Toss bread with olive oil and half the fresh herbs. Spread on a baking sheet. Place in oven and toss occasionally, baking bread until it’s golden and crispy, 15-20 minutes. In a large bowl, whisk eggs. Add broth, milk, spinach, mushrooms, shallots, onions, garlic, mustard, cheese, remaining herbs and artichoke hearts or peppers. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Add crumbs to this mixture and toss well so bread becomes somewhat soaked. Pour into a greased 9x11 pan, press down so it’s firm, cover and refrigerate at least 30 minutes or overnight. When ready to bake, preheat oven to 350 degrees and bake for 60-75 minutes. Let sit for 10 minutes, cut into slices and serve.

The question I hear most (besides what the heck is a sommelier) is, “What’s your favourite wine?” What time of day/year is it? What’s for dinner? What’s my mood? All will determine my answer. Next comes, “Oh - a wine snob, cool.” Not really. Let’s begin with some basics on wine selection, getting you on track to becoming your very own wine snob, or “cork dork” as I often refer to myself.
No need to get fancy with this. It’s make-ahead, so it can be thrown in the oven around the same time you’d be dialing the pizza guy.
The vast array of varietals and styles of wine leave us with a wine for any occasion. Let’s say it’s a hot summer day and you’re lounging on a beautiful patio. I suggest a well-chilled Sauvignon Blanc which has a crisp, thirst quenching acidity and loads of citrus and grassy flavours. A Pinot Grigio would also suffice nicely. If chicken or prawns are added to the mix, I recommend a fruity ‘lightly or unoaked’ Chardonnay or dry Riesling. Let’s suppose you are hosting a Wine & Cheese and find some fantastic olives, antipastos and local/ imported cheese at the deli; get adventurous! Try a spicy Shiraz with zingy tannins, herbal notes and finishes characteristically with hints of black pepper. Or play it safe with an Oaked Chardonnay, boasting enough structure to stand up to these savoury treats.

Back at home, you kick back and put your feet up with a good book. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Butter each piece of bread and place in small pan. With a paring knife, dig out the core from the top of each apple, but do not go all the way through the bottom. Mix brown sugar with cinnamon and cardamom, then cream together with remaining butter. Pack sugar mixture inside each apple. Brush lightly with maple syrup. Cover loosely with foil and bake at 350 degrees for about 40 minutes or until apple is tender and the butter is bubbling. Brush with maple syrup occasionally while baking.

Leading up to the main entrance of Briza Marii, a ground-to-roofline rectangular opening announces the front door—a key architectural element from which the home’s main design themes originate. The door is a 12 foot high work of art in three-inch thick Black walnut with inset art glass panels in a stacked vertical configuration. These materials, along with stainless steel inserts reappear throughout the home for a subtle, but continuous reminder of what this home is about—contemporary beauty with roots in traditional concepts. Immediately inside, a floor-to-ceiling shelving unit with irregularly cubed openings creates a partial division between this space and the adjacent dining room. Stainless steel metal accents tie in with similar detail in each of the home’s doors, and spherical lights on the shelving assembly offer a soft contrast with the angular openings.

The shapes created in the millwork are of varying sizes and lengths, and glass spheres are used decoratively on the shelves. Seating and storage under the window offer a quiet place to curl up and a simple glass and steel desk sits on a deep white throw rug for a functional and highly attractive space.

Monochromatic tones throughout the home create a clean, fresh environment that is collected and contemporary but still airy and welcoming. In the great room, cream-coloured leather L-shaped sofas square off with the fireplace, which features a stunning white Arctic marble surround, wrapped in a walnut hearth. Shadow box shelving flanks the fireplace—vertical on one side, horizontal on the other— leaving a deliberate, stylish edge in the warm, liveable space. A series of wire-suspended glass orbs cascades from the ceiling’s 20-foot height, adding sparkle and movement without interrupting the view. The back wall—entirely made of glass— extends through the great room and around the seating area and kitchen creating a sense of connection with the exterior. The feeling is strengthened by the home’s low bank waterfront location, a feature that also posed a challenge for the developer. A d iv is io n of
“The lot is essentially at sea level, creating challenging geotechnical conditions,” says Johal. “A high water table required structured engineered fill material used to create stability for the building site, and a complex sub-terrain drainage system was installed around the perimeter of the property to manage the site’s water content.”

The view to the ocean is left clear from the 1,000 square foot exterior patio with a frameless glass railing that also guards an interior mezzanine and the great room’s most dramatic and prized architectural feature—a frameless, floating staircase that connects the two storeys. “The clients came up with the idea of stairs that come out of the wall and appear to not have any support,” says Johal. “This was by all means the most challenging and satisfying element in the home.”
On the main floor beyond the great room is a secondary master bedroom suite that opens to the exterior through a set of glass doors. In the en suite bathroom, double 7x4-foot floating vanities with quartz countertops in black and silver are striking under a walnut-framed mirror. Marble in the shower is decadent while a circular tile inlay is a playful touch. A triangular bath unit saves space and creates interest by tucking into a corner.

The team replaced steel beams and risers with steel treads that extend into the room and are hidden within the wall. Six-inchhigh walnut treads cover the steel, and steel insteps keep the aesthetic continuous. Lights are set into the underside of the treads for a hovering effect. Face-mounted steel fasteners connect the frameless glass and the staircase with the rest of the room.

The homeowners dreamed of a contemporary kitchen—and they weren’t disappointed. Endless custom millwork wraps around the space and six-inch white and grey quartz counters both circumvent the room and appear on the island arranged in a nested rectangular configuration. Six stainless stools invite company to the pop-up side of the island, and five molded sphere pendants hang overhead. The backsplash on the perimeter is created from 18 x 1-inch grey glass tiles adding a subtle shine that plays off of the stainless appliances. Floating three-inch-thick shadowbox wall shelves hover above the backsplash.

Adding function to form, double under mounted sinks and a cook top are set into the island and face the exterior through the wall of turn and tilt windows. Plentiful horizontal walnut drawers alternating with stainless vertical pull drawers make the range area a chef’s dream. A single slab of glass with a stainless pipe serves as a sleek, contemporary range hood.

High-gloss white porcelain floors extend to a dining nook against the back wall, which hugs a glass and stainless table and six white leather and stainless chairs. Leather furnishings nestled around
a fireplace invite family and guests to an adjacent seating area, subtly separated from the kitchen by pillared half walls. Stainless reveals in the fireplace and floating cabinetry on either side remind visitors to this oasis of its place in the home’s design. Upstairs a spacious walk-in closet precedes a 700 square foot master retreat with glass walls that open up a generous view. A neutral palette offers a brilliant backdrop for carefully selected dark wood pieces. A leather headboard and Italian-made high-gloss acrylic TV hutch—both in white—complete the classic, high-end look. The ensuite bathroom is a restful spa where earth tones and precious materials including crema marfel marble in the shower and Emperador Dark porcelain on the floors envelop with a rich, calming presence. Double sinks are set into an asymmetrical floating dark wood vanity with a quartz top, while twisted frosted glass fixtures appear to float against the mirrors. The spectacular under mount tub is wrapped in a quartz surround, creating the appearance of a solid, seamless unit.

Across the mezzanine, two girls’ bedrooms are princesses’ dreams with pink and red styling and are linked by a bathroom with double flower shaped sinks in the vanity, sparkling quartz counters, and large, playful pink mirrors. The guest bathroom layers subtlety with sophistication—a deep grey quartz top counter and frosted glass vessel sinks are the highlights against three tones and textures of porcelain tiles in shades of grey. A guest room and media room complete the upper floor arrangement.
“The homeowners wanted a contemporary space, but also a warm space and a family home,” says Johal. “We were challenged to do something special here, and I believe we achieved it.”

Isabella’s ghost is claiming her place in history

“That’s her! That’s her!” exclaimed the middle-aged lady, stabbing her finger frantically at a photograph. “That’s the woman I saw.” She was now attracting a small group of curious bystanders, who crowded around her to see what the matter was. It was a Sunday afternoon about six years ago and the scene took place in Ross Bay Cemetery, immediately after one of the walking tours conducted by the Old Cemeteries Society. The lady had attended the tour and afterwards picked up a copy of a booklet published by the society. While thumbing through it she spotted a picture of a rather singular-looking woman, dressed head-to-toe in black and looking at the camera with a mournful, almost cadaverous, look on her bony face. The photograph was of Isabella Ross, original owner of the land upon which the cemetery was laid out in 1872.

This is the only known photograph of Isabella Ross, the first woman in British Columbia to have land registered in her own name. Her farmhouse stood where Ross Bay Cemetery is today and she haunts the site of her nearby grave. BC Archives photograph F-01280.

Several people who rushed over to check out the cause of the commotion knew Isabella’s story and were eager to find out exactly where the woman had seen her. It soon became apparent that the woman didn’t know Ross Bay Cemetery very well. She explained that she and a friend had heard what a beautiful, tranquil place it was and about two weeks before had gone there for a stroll. They noticed the woman in black from a distance and, as they got closer, realized there was something “odd” about her. First, her attire was rather unusual, as though she was wearing a costume for a period movie. Second, she paid no attention to the ladies as they walked slowly by. Third, she had an old-fashioned baby pram in front of her, but as the women tried to take a peek at the baby, they were startled to see the buggy was empty. They didn’t want to stare; instead moving past a short distance, and then glancing back. The woman and pram had vanished! Only seconds before she was there in full view. Now she was nowhere to be seen.
The lady didn’t think she could locate the spot where the sighting had taken place, but agreed to accompany some of the society’s volunteers who wanted to know. As they walked up and down the winding carriageways the lady said, “She was over there” and pointed directly toward the grave of Isabella Ross. It was clear she didn’t know who Isabella was and had no idea about her grave. In fact, the plot is not in a prominent place. She probably wouldn’t have paid much attention to it, even if she had walked along the nearby path. The board is a replica, installed by the Old Cemeteries Society in 1993 to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the founding of Fort Victoria. Whether or not the grave had ever been marked is not recorded, but there certainly had been nothing on it within living memory. It was ironic it had been unrecognized for so long.

Isabella Ross was the first woman in British Columbia to own land in her own name
Isabella Ross has the distinction of being the first woman in British Columbia to own land in her own name. She purchased ninety-nine acres from the Hudson’s Bay Company in the early 1850s, comprising a strip running from Ross Bay to Harling Point and including part of Gonzales Hill. She established a farm there which she named “Fowl Bay Farm” and built a house for herself and younger children close to a bluff overlooking Ross Bay, inside the current cemetery grounds. She lived there until the 1870s, but was being cared for by the Sisters of St. Ann when she died in 1888.

Why would she return as a ghost? It is believed spirits often return to a place that was significant to them in their lifetime. But it may be that Isabella is simply trying to set the record straight by reminding people she has a claim to be there. If you walk to the foot of St. Charles Street at the corner of Dallas Road, overlong Ross Bay, you will see a small stone bench in which a plaque has been mounted. It states that the bay was named after Charles Ross. This is in error because Charles (Isabella’s husband) had died in 1844, long before treaties had been made with the Songhees and long before the land was available for sale. Charles was the builder and first person in charge of Fort Victoria, but the bay really was named for Isabella whose farmhouse was the only dwelling there for many years.

The incident of the woman and the photograph is one of the clearest sightings of Isabella’s ghost, but there are numerous others. Incidentally, the ghost seems to make her appearance usually in the daytime, a convenience for ghost hunters because a city bylaw prohibits entry to the cemetery after dark.

Just a few hours’ drive north of Victoria, this unassuming resort is nestled into an old growth forest on the eastern shore of Vancouver Island, and features 64 luxury beachfront suites and ocean view rooms, a world class dining room, onsite full service spa and the Hydropath. The Kingfisher is an adult oriented resort that is not for those looking to party; the hotel has a ‘quiet time after 10:00pm’ policy to preserve the peaceful and tranquil environment. It was much appreciated.

Karla and I checked into a large two room beachfront suite; boasting a separate bedroom, living room, two full baths, convenience kitchen, two balconies and a double-sided fireplace. It was spacious, comfortable and well-appointed with thoughtful furnishings and details. With spectacular views over Gartley Bay, our guest suite was the perfect place for afternoon napping, watching the sea lions play in the ocean below, chatting over a good bottle of wine – or simply doing nothing at all.
Day one of our Kingfisher adventure included Tea by the Sea and caving (of sorts). As soon as we were settled in our suite, we headed to the dining room to meet with General Manager, Sean Williams and Executive Chef, Troy Fogarty. We chatted about the hotel’s history and future over ‘tea by the sea’. Very popular with locals, Chef Fogarty explained the origin of this interesting afternoon delight, “Our version of Tea was inspired by the archives of Jenny Butchart herself, from where I came. In the original house, our executive chef came across a Tea “snack plate” that was used to place a tea cup and a selection of sandwiches and sweets on. The tea plate was then presumed to have been placed on the lap or knee and enjoyed over afternoon conversation.” The Kingfisher’s take on afternoon tea was exceptional, which of course started with an offering of robust and mellow teas to choose from, followed by a colourful parade of sweets and savouries. The pastries included a Madeline lavender scone with whipped butter and four-butter compote, lemon amaretti tort and marzipan wrapped battenburg. The savouries included a flavourful smoked tuna with citrus aioli and a memorable forest mushroom strudel.

Later, we headed excitedly over to the ‘caves’. People talk about this unique experience, and I had known about it long before coming to the resort. Kingfisher calls it the Pacific Mist Hydropath. Karla called it paradise. Your hydropath host, who stays discreetly with you on this entire journey, helped us move through the caves. Absolutely the only one of its kind in North America, the Pacific Mist Hydropath offers the same benefits of hydrotherapy on a recreated West Coast shoreline path featuring sandstone sculpted caves and pools. There are seven steps and you are guided through each, including the massage rinse, mineral massage pool, waterfall massage, steam cave and glacier waterfall, river walk, sea mineral soak, and finishing with a seaweed and mud scrub in the tidal bathtub carved from a huge stone boulder. It was one of those experiences that one must do – it is impossible to describe in words. Without question, the Hydropath was worth the trip, and had we had more time, Karla and I would have done it again on day two.

Our dining experiences (all 6 of them) were nothing short of sublime. The dining room, with its large windows over the ocean, wood furnishings and fireplace are quiet, tranquil and unassuming – but not simple - that seems to be the way here. We ate so much food over the course of three days, I would need an entire article to dedicate to the culinary delights that Karla and I experienced, but there were a few great dishes that we actually ordered more than once – they were just that good. On the starters menu, the Tuna and Scallop Duo (albacore tuna tartare with seared Qualicum scallops and citrus emulsion) was exceptionally good, as was the Local Oysters Two Ways (baked with creamed leek and prosciutto and raw with tarragon mignonette). From the mains, there were two table favourites; the first was the Kingfisher Steamer Basket (local shellfish, assorted fresh seafood, and Asian pot stickers steamed with garden vegetables and finished with a fresh lime sesame glaze and sweet chili dip) and the Roasted Chicken Breast (Cowichan Valley free range chicken breast with truffled potato and sauce vierge). A special shoutout to our dinner server, Shelby; by and far, one of the most knowledgeable, friendly and genuinely great servers I have come across in all my travels.

In the 1970s, I made the acquaintance of a rumpled and elderly newspaperman named Jim Nesbitt. I was working at the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria at the time and Nesbitt recognized my interest in the art history of Victoria. He piled me into his old red Toyota, full of clutter and reeking of cigarette smoke, and we sped off to his home-away-from-home: Craigdarroch Castle. By his single minded effort Nesbitt had rescued the giant pile atop Rockland to become the tourist attraction he knew it was meant to be. About 15 years ago I asked for permission to paint inside the Castle and was invited to spend a summer of Tuesday afternoons there. Each week, I took aside the velvet rope and stationed myself in the doorway to one of the rooms. The result was a suite of 13 paintings of Victoria’s most spectacular home. There’s nowhere quite like it. Nesbitt asked if I knew where any of the Castle’s furniture and artwork had landed up. He (correctly) assumed that the Art Gallery might have some in its attic. Together we identified a few passé pictures and oversized chairs for repatriation. This was my introduction to the Dunsmuir’s Castle.
Later I interviewed Philip Mix; then engaged in a three year restoration of the murals in the ceiling of the ballroom, which had been given a coat of grey paint. Floral swags and the heads of lions were revealed under his meticulous care.

Left. When I asked the curator of the Castle what was his favourite view, he took me on to the lawn of the neighbour’s house where we had the best view of the turret and its balcony. To create this image I used some creative licence, lowering the hedge that has grown up in the foreground.
Ten years later I met Bruce Davies, who offered me a close up look at the castle’s roof of red slate tiles. We climbed out a top floor window and enjoyed an unparalleled view of the Straits of Juan de Fuca and the Olympics beyond. Davies had masterminded a ten year project to restore the fabric of the building.

This fantasy castle began as the dream of Robert Dunsmuir, a Scot who came to Victoria when it was a Hudson’s Bay post. He independently developed coal mines at Nanaimo and then sold the coal to the Royal Navy at Esquimalt. When British Columbia joined Canada in 1871, a railway was promised. Dunsmuir won the contract to build the railway (and receive a land grant of 2 million acres, almost a quarter of Vancouver Island) which conveniently connected his mines and his major customer. He became the wealthiest man in the province.

Dunsmuir set out to amass 28 acres of land atop Victoria’s Rockland neighbourhood, overlooking Government House. He retained the services of Warren Williams of Portland, Oregon as architect, telling him he wanted a castle in Scottish Baronial style, no expense spared.

Masons set to work; a trainload of fine woodwork for the interior arrived from Chicago; stained glass and a job lot of paintings were brought in. During the period of construction artisans were hard to find, the architect died (passing the job on to his draftsman) and, in 1889, Robert Dunsmuir died at the age of 63. His widow, Joan, took two of her unmarried daughters on an extended European tour, leaving the building to be supervised by her two sons, James and Richard. When she returned, from her sitting room on the second floor she oversaw the Dunsmuir fortunes.
The monster home was becoming a liability. Her sons quarreled and took her to court in a long running public scandal. When Joan died in 1908 she left her estate to her five unmarried daughters who sold it in a sensational three day sale. The property was divided into 144 lots plus the Castle. Sales were few and in 1910 they were offered in a sort of lottery. One of the lucky purchasers would win the castle. The winner used it to raise a mortgage, couldn’t keep up the payments, and it reverted to the bank in 1919. By this time the garden had gone to seed and the fantasy castle was a white elephant. The Federal Government took it over as a veteran’s hospital for long term care but vacated it in 1921. Then it became the home of Victoria College, forerunner to the University of Victoria until, in 1946, the students complained about the building and walked out. From 1946 to 1967 it served as offices for the Greater Victoria School Board. In 1968 the Victoria School of Music, with 40 staff and 435 students, moved in 35 pianos. It was then that James Nesbitt and his Craigdarroch Castle Preservation Society swung into action, determined to make it the showplace it was always intended to be. In 1979 the music school left and the Castle was open for business.

Also, the separate shower and tub may take up more space but it makes each amenity infinitely more enjoyable. Anyone who has ever renovated their home will tell you it can be extremely stressful. Industry experts agree that any major renovation requires a lot of planning, preparation and money. If you organize ahead of time, chances are you will be much happier with the results.

Flooring is the canvas on which the rest of your home’s design and décor rests
One of the costliest and most important considerations is what flooring to put down. Everything else you do with rest against, harmonize with or sit directly on your floors. Selecting flooring that is durable, attractive, easy to maintain and healthy can be overwhelming because of the endless choices available today. It is critical to plan ahead. Consider, talk about it and write down the flooring budget, the collective needs of your family, budget, preferred flooring types, and then decide which options work best for your lifestyle and which will look great in your newly renovated home. The Rule of 3: A few interior designer friends of mine always adhere to the rule of threes when they discuss flooring options with their clients … never more than three different flooring materials in your home. The reason is simple; more than three and your home will look too busy and choppy. The old adage that more is less is best when it comes to flooring.
It’s all about flow. If you think of your flooring as the canvas for the rest of your décor, then imagine a seamless flow from room to room. Nothing creates that look better than choosing the same type of flooring throughout the common areas. If you have a small home or room, avoid using carpet. Carpeting can make the room look smaller. Laminate wood or hardwood is a much better choice because it tricks the eye into thinking the room is larger. Tiles can also fool us into believing the room is bigger than it is. Also, choosing horizontal lines to the floor will emphasize its width. If you do want to break it up a bit, then you have to think about what type of flooring works best in each room. Hands down, hardwood floor is still the number one choice for most home owners. There are many advantages to hardwood: namely wood is a natural insulator, it’s easy to maintain and clean, can be purchased finished or unfinished, and will undoubtedly increase the value of your home. However, it’s one of the costliest flooring options to purchase and install. When it comes to bedrooms, carpets are still the favoured alternative. Carpet feels good and warm on your feet, it absorbs sound, comes in a wide choice of colours and is easy to install. However, experts will tell you to avoid laying carpet where there is moisture or high traffic, for example, in kitchens, bathrooms and basements. Of course, tile makes sense in any bathroom and with the right material choice; it can also look fabulous in kitchens and hallways. At the end of the day (and your renovation) what is underfoot is a critical component of the entire renovation. The task doesn’t have to be daunting – plan ahead, speak to experts, look at all options and make a decision based on thoughtful planning. In the end, you will have floors that you can live with for many years to come.

Windows have come a long way, and replacing them can have a huge impact on the cosiness factor in your living space. This is as true on the wet Pacific coast as it is on the dry-cold prairies, but we have the added problem/benefit of spectacular views that we don’t want to shut out with heavy, insulating drapes. When choosing the right type of energy-efficient window for your new or newly renovated home, the federal government has made it remarkably easy: Natural Resources Canada has an unmistakable label for products that meet its ENERGY STAR ® program qualifications; we are in Zone A (the warmest zone), and most products will bear a label that states its appropriateness (Zone A B C). Alternately, it will be prominently displayed in the showroom or on promo material, or you can always ask your contractor to ensure your windows meet the criteria. Energy efficiency ratings (in windows) are based on a combination of factors. These include the number of panes (single glazed, double glazed, triple glazed), the frame material (metal, wood, vinyl, fibreglass, composite), the airtightness, the water tightness, and coatings.

When the topic is window, we still want the vistas and water views. After all, that is what West Coast life is all about. If you’re renovating your home and want to stay on the cutting edge of glass, here’s a black and white snapshot of new windows that will keep your home in a golden glow and your budget out of the red.

In general, the more panes of glass you have (glazing), the more insulated your window will be. As long as the window has a good airtightness rating (highest is A3, lowest is A1), the gas fill between glazing (argon or krypton) will provide a sufficient buffer to heat loss. For water tightness, the ratings run from B7 (highest rating) to B1 (lowest). In case you are in a very windy area, the wind load strength rating runs from C5 (highest) to C1 (lowest).

While metal window frames are light and strong, they are not the best insulators. Wood frames are attractive and more solid, but vulnerable to moisture and expansion issues. The best insulation will come from window frames with insulated cavities; these are usually PVC (vinyl) or fibreglass, but you can also get insulated aluminum frames. Much of the modern innovation in window efficiency comes from coatings, like low-emissivity, or Low-E. Applied to the inside of windows, Low-E coatings will prevent heat loss, a process known as Solar Heat Gain Coefficient; applied to the outside (more appropriate in hot climates), it will reduce heat absorption into the house. Windows manufactured with Low-E coatings often cost 10-15% more, but can improve energy efficiency upwards of 50%.

All of this adds up to an overall energy rating for the window, explained as a U-factor or an R-rating. Both use the same criteria; basically, a low U-factor equals a high R-rating. An Open Door Policy at Home Brings a Breath of Fresh Air to West Coast Living
Gone are the days when windows were the only spot to get a few whiffs of the intoxicating cedar, pine and summer bloom scents; door screens can be installed in any doorway, providing a great influx of lung-soothing atmosphere. A single doorway screen can bring in the equivalent of three or four window screens, and that’s just for starters: door screens can be made to fit double, French, and patio doors as well. There’s no need to sacrifice one’s sense of style, either. Modern screens have moved beyond the stolid slate grey of yesteryear, and are now available in a variety of subtle, flexible hues. If you’re part of BC’s steadily climbing outdoor living yearning curve, some key considerations will help you transform that humble barbecue and plastic chair place into a beautiful, functional outdoor space.
“To start, understand the critical-use patterns of the household in the outdoor space. Plan to bridge the gap between current use and desired space,” advises Michael Dingle, owner and designer at Landeca Integrated Property Services. Dingle often plans pathways first when recreating outdoor spaces. “Paths should get people to the far reaches of the landscape and give them reasons to get there.”

Roman pavers, cobbles, and flagstones are favourites underfoot, but Dingle likes the look and durability of ipe (say it eee- pay) wood tiles, which are a third the price of teak. Ipe has been used to build the Selkirk pedestrian bridge in Victoria and on Coal Harbour Park benches in Vancouver. An arbour roof provides shade while a roll back awning shelters guests from rain. Access to power and water are key in basic outdoor kitchens, with sink, counter, refrigerator and grill, or more sophisticated versions, with a bar or portable stainless steel pizza oven.

“The most successful outdoor kitchen should be closest to the existing kitchen and have a western exposure if possible because most of your entertaining here will be late in the day and evenings,” says Dingle. It is important to choose surfaces that will withstand the elements for years to come. Stone, concrete, resin, sustainably harvested tropical hardwoods and cedar are all good choices. Choose comfortable, durable, all-season furniture that fits your space. Trending materials include thick weave wicker, teak, aluminum, and resin. Plan for enough room to move the furniture around to accommodate different functions and group sizes, and consider dual-use furnishings like benches with built-in storage. Consider hedges, fences, and lattice to wall your lounge area, perhaps with unusual gates opening onto pathways. Solar landscape lighting, LED and low voltage light systems, which offer snap together assembly and require only 6-inch deep trenches for wires are energy efficient ways of lighting outdoor spaces.

To landscape your outdoor space, create plant bed islands, with easy care native plants and flowering compact shrubs like showy hydrangeas, small viburnums and dwarf lilacs. During the renovation phase, also consider widening doorways and installing attractive faucets should have central controls; they’re easier for arthritic hands to move up and down.
Multi-level homes Many older boomers worry about living in a multi-level home; a real issue if mobility challenges develop in the future. Industry professionals suggest re-configuring the main living space during a major renovation, thus leaving the home’s footprint intact. For example, turn an unused dining room into a guest room that can later be used as the main floor master bedroom. Also, look for ways to free up main floor living space by removing walls and creating more flow. If the laundry room is upstairs or in the basement, talk to a contractor about how an unused main floor space can be plumbed for the appropriate electrical outlets.

Consider Your Project Before putting out the call to contractors, consider the size of your renovation project. If you are just getting some minor fix-its’ done – replacing some drywall, swapping out a sink or toilet, painting the exterior of your house – you will probably not need a general contractor to oversee the project, especially if it only involves one trade (i.e., plumbing or painting or flooring or etc…). Even if you deal directly with a tradesperson, though, make sure they have a solid history and good references.
General contractors should always have insurance, WorkSafe BC coverage, and bonded tradespeople, but it never hurts to ask about these before sealing the deal.

Licensing It’s true: the days uncertified handymen are coming to a close, if slowly. The BC Safety Authority issues licenses to trusted contractors and provides a list of them on their website. They also assess fines and, in some cases, will suspend or revoke licenses if they feel a contractor is unsafe or untrustworthy. This provides the homeowner with a great resource for checking out potential candidates before any shovels hit the dirt. To avoid hassles (and if you decide you want a licensed contractor), try to ask the them if they have a license during your initial conversation; if they do not have one, it wastes everyone’s time to have them come out to your property and give you an estimate.

guide to Hiring the Perfect Contractor Quotes Tempting as they may be, we all know better than buying a $20 Rolex watch from a guy on the street; the same rule applies with contractors. Most quotes should be fairly close to each other in price – if one is 50% lower than the rest, maybe you should question why. Everyone loves a deal, but nobody wants a botched renovation job or potentially unsafe home. A proper quote should include details of all the work that will be done, including materials and the work done by sub-trades. Try to get at least 3 quotes before deciding on a contractor. Never accept a quote hastily written out on the back of an envelope or a napkin, but don’t be wowed by fancy technology either, and always remember the best quote of all: “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”

Never, ever - NEVER - pay the whole amount up front. Any reputable contractor will present you with a milestone payment schedule before the job commences. When you pay in advance, you are giving up a large degree of control, and you may end up with nothing more than an unfinished job site and a big hole in your bank account.

The Joseph Despard Pemberton home “Gonzales” in Victoria

A tree lined Rockland road preserves the peaceful feeling of days gone by… and reminds us of the man who created the city we see today. Joseph Pemberton laid out Victoria’s first street plan, more than 150 years ago. An Irish born civil engineer, Pemberton was working in England in 1850 when he heard some interesting news: the Hudson’s Bay Company planned to colonize Vancouver Island, and was looking for a qualified surveyor. He applied, was immediately accepted, and shortly after, set sail from Southampton. He was 31 years old. It was a miserable journey. Sick with malaria and exhausted by the long voyage around Cape Horn, Pemberton was more than happy to disembark at Esquimalt in June 1851. James Douglas, chief factor at Fort Victoria, awaited his arrival with eager anticipation. Two years earlier the British government, hoping to forestall American expansion, had leased Vancouver Island to the HBC for seven shillings a year (around $3 in today’s currency), provided the company attracted significant British settlement. Now, Douglas was anxious to keep his part of the bargain. And Pemberton was ripe for the challenge.
Douglas and Pemberton had been instructed by the HBC to prepare a town plan and a general structure for colonization, similar to the class divisions of England at that time. In other words, said the HBC, land cost should be such as to discourage squatters, paupers, and land speculators. Accordingly, Pemberton designed a three-tier system comprising town lots, suburban lots, and country lots.

Within four months, Pemberton and his assistant and lifelong friend Benjamin William Pearse had completed a preliminary survey of Vancouver Island’s coastline and mapped out the HBC land surrounding the Fort. At that time, all activity still centred around the little trading-post, built on the east side of Victoria’s harbour in 1843.

Pemberton’s town plan included schools and churches. He insisted on preserving stands of trees, for their beauty and for the protection they afforded against strong winds from the south. The rolling meadows and forested areas that Douglas had earmarked for public use way back in 1842 became Beacon Hill Park. Retiring HBC employees from across Canada were promised 20 acres of prime farming land, courtesy of the company, if they agreed to settle here. John Tod, John Work and William Fraser Tolmie were among those who accepted the company’s offer, and streets running through the land they owned bear their names to this day.

Pemberton decided to build a home on his own large tract of land, which included the lower part of Fernwood (the upper part belonged to his friend Benjamin Pearse) and almost all of Oak Bay. In 1885, he built a mansion high on one corner of his 1200-acre farm. The house had 20 rooms, five bathrooms, a billiard room, conservatory and library, and a glorious southward view toward the
Olympic Peninsula Mountains. Pemberton and his elegant, aristocratic wife Teresa entertained at “Gonzales” on a grand scale. Their dinners, elegant balls and garden parties became a feature in Victoria’s social scene. In the late 1880s, he and son Frederick started a real estate business downtown. In 1893, Joseph suffered a massive heart attack and died suddenly, at the age of 71, leaving 28-yearold Fred in charge. Fred’s son-in-law, Cuthbert Holmes, joined him in the business. In 1947, Pemberton Holmes Realtors opened an office on the site of old Fort Victoria, where almost one hundred years earlier, Joseph Pemberton had started his illustrious Victoria career.

“Gonzales” stood for sixty-seven years on St. Charles Street, just below Rockland Avenue, until the growing city surrounded and eventually swallowed it. The house was demolished in 1952, but two nearby streets—Pemberton and Despard—still bear its owner’s name, and the real estate company he founded thrives in the city to this day.

THE SKINNY ON TIGHT
Now into my 50s, I have personal experience with the effects of aging. Most Canadians will probably agree that growing older is a privilege. I have earned the lines on my face; raising a family, seeing the world and looking after my patients in a busy Dermatology practice in Victoria. Over time, skin loses tone and becomes sallow. For the love of art collecting
Portrait of Mary McLean, painted by Wyndham Lewis (1940) is but one of 92 works of art, chosen by chief curator Mary Jo Hughes for the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria’s Victoria Collects exhibit, and Patrick Stewart is one of twenty local collectors who have lent artwork to the gallery in support of the exhibition. Some collectors spend their lives collecting to donate their collections to museums, galleries and academic institutions, and in fact, generous gifts from art collectors comprise more than 80 percent of the gallery’s permanent collection. One thing is imminent: collectors love to collect.

Stewart comes from a family with history, money and intimate connections to the Canadian art community, with something like 400 David Milne paintings accumulated by his grandfather, J.S. McLean (founder of Canada Packers), and donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario. Paintings on loan include Surrey’s Merry Christmas, a Still Life by Paraskeva Clark (who had a longstanding affair with J.S. McLean decades ago) and the early Wyndham Lewis portrait of Stewart’s mother painted the day before her wedding in 1940.

“Lewis was down on his luck, and my grandfather took pity on him and had a number of portraits done, so he could make some money,” Stewart says; however, Lewis and Stewart’s mother shared a mutual disdain for each other. “My grandmother never did see the picture, because my grandfather took one look at it and said, ‘here’s your money, take it away.’”

Collectors love to collect On a trip to London years later, Stewart’s parents tracked down Lewis’s widow, who, albeit not very graciously, offered the painting back because it had been paid for. Stewart was the only one apart from his mother who liked the painting. Incidentally, Portrait of Mary McLean by Lewis is Hughes favourite piece in the show.

“Originally I had a small show planned, a taste—twenty paintings this year, and then next year I’d do twenty more,” says Hughes. “And now I’ve been at the point for two months where I can’t fit one more thing!” Hughes chose works rarely seen in Victoria, such as Piet Mondrian and a 1909 Charles Russell buffalo roundup, as well as works by various emerging artists not yet widely known on the West Coast. She had to ask one of the collectors to stop showing her work, as she could do a show on his collection alone.

“I was like a kid in a candy shop,” Hughes says. “He literally has two houses in Victoria that are filled with artwork.” And then there’s George and Christiane Smyth’s Salish Weave Collection, which is the largest private collection featured in the exhibition, showcasing nineteen works of art. The Smyth’s planted the seeds for their Salish collection twelve years ago when they were still living Ontario, but once the “activist collectors” made Vancouver Island their permanent home, the couple embarked on a journey to support, collect and spread awareness and knowledge of contemporary Coast Salish art. The couple purchases directly from artists when they can and have donated boxed sets to a number of post-secondary institutions, including UVic and Stanford University. They also lent work to a Coast Salish exhibit AGGV hosted in 2007. George Smyth will be giving a lecture on his “100-mile collection” March 15, discussing artists like Susan Point, Dylan Thomas and Chris Paul, and on February 16, Hughes will host a tour in the evening and share collecting love stories. The Salish exhibit opened January 6 while the larger, more varied exhibit opens February 3. Both shows run through to May 6, 2012.

Of all the things we do in the province to keep ourselves amused and at peace there are two that attract me. One - as anyone who knows me will tell you - is golf. If I was a better player, I would be on the course at least four times a week, but that would mean retirement and I shunned that a long time ago. But there are so many places to play across our province, you could probably try a new layout every couple of days for a year and never see the same eighteen holes twice. And you would probably say that every one of them was a gem. That`s just the way it is and believe me I`ve played in a lot of places over the years.

In the Okanagan there`s a long list of must-plays including Gallagher`s Canyon, Predator Ridge and the Okanagan Golf and Country Club. Farther afield you could tee up at any number of winners. Cordova Bay and Highland Pacific on Vancouver Island come to mind. And there are some new tracks, like Canoe Creek, that are on my bucket list.

Fishing, my second choice, is anything but technical, if you do it my way. I honour the accomplishments of people like Charlie White, who once had a foot in my business, (broadcasting) but eventually gave it up to devote his time to fishing. He had the ingenuity to invent the Scotty downrigger and any number of lures that are still used on the chuck. In the fishing world, and in other spheres as well, he was regarded as a genius. I met him and I liked him immediately but I never dropped a line with him. He was just too much of an expert to be sharing a boat with the likes of me. When I think of fishing in the interior of BC, the name Roderick Haig Brown always comes to mind. He actually wrote twenty three books on
the art of fishing. And the way he described it that`s the way it was; an art form. He was a fly fishing legend and he knew everything there was to know about salmon. At one time he was a magistrate in Campbell River. They eventually named a building after him, posthumously, at the University of Victoria, where he had served a term as chancellor. If you`re a fishing purist, you might argue that there`s a world of technique involved in catching, say, a salmon around Haida Gwai or a cut-throat trout, or a rainbow in the rivers and lakes around Kamloops. I prefer the mindless kind of fishing that you can indulge in, as did Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn. You know! Just a hickory pole and a bent pin as tackle and a slimy old worm for bait.
That was then, when I first went after trout (of the speckled variety) on the sublime, picturesque Beaver River in mid Ontario in a little known town, make that village, called Feversham. We had graduated to bamboo poles and real hooks by then. Perhaps we even had sinkers to drag the line below the surface. But it was something less than sophisticated. Not that I haven`t fished on a grand scale.

Why once, my old friend Brian Vance and me spent an entire day trying to stump each other with trivia questions while the guide steered the Whaler up and down over what he thought might be the perfect place for a catch. That was only interrupted by a sassy seal who took Brian’s line, and the salmon he`d hooked on it, for a ride the distance of a football field. Both of us thought we had hooked into Moby Dick, until the line suddenly snapped; the seal surfaced, laughed (or so I thought) and then took off, the broken line trailing behind him. Now that was a fishing experience. ‘Tight lines’ everyone.

For a few years, my wife Tammy and myself were invited to a so-called “couples weekend” somewhere up near Haida Gwai off the coast of northern BC. It wasn`t so much fishing as socializing. Every morning we left our beds in the Pacific Lodge, stumbled to a huge breakfast room, fuelled up with every morning treat known to man, tottered down to the docks, gingerly boarded one of a fleet of Boston Whalers or other craft like that, settled down in the stern wrapped in parkas, hugging a thermos of coffee, and left the rest to our guide. I once naively thought that a guide did just that. You know, pointed the way – but a fishing guide does everything until he hands you a rod full of salmon or halibut and advises you not to let it get away. And woe betide you, if it did. You then earned the everlasting scorn of your once friendly guide. I didn`t mind that so much because I`ve never been a fan of salmon on a plate anyway. Catch and release was a program invented for ‘fishermen’ just like me.

Renovate Your Body for Summer
let’s get renovating for that summer body. Tightening up the abdomen muscles, also known as core strengthening is a great place to start your body renovation. The abdomen is made up of three major muscle groups • Transverse Abdominus (TVA) is the largest and wraps around your entire abdomen • Oblique muscles run up and down your sides • Rectus abdominus is the smallest and most sought after muscle group (creator of the illusive six pack abs). Your TVA stabilizes the spine, improving the act of breathing as well as protecting organs. Exercises like the plank or dead bug that strengthen the TVA are more effective than crunches or sit-ups (that just isolate the front of the abdomen). With a stronger core comes better posture, resulting in more confidence. So, as your abdomen strengthens, you build a better structure to finish your body’s renovations.
Regular Workouts is the Secret to Success Doing two or three full body workouts a week is a great way to gain strength and muscle. During each session,

make sure to exercise all major muscle groups equally. This does not mean you have to work out one muscle at a time (quads then biceps and then chest, for example). Like a home renovation, multi-tasking gets the work done a whole lot faster. Try multi muscle exercises; the more muscles being used at one time, the more calories you are burning. Keep in mind that with multi-muscle exercises, there is a greater chance of injury so use lighter weights, more repetitions and proper form. A personal trainer can certainly help with creating a safe, effective routine that meets your individual needs. Another necessity to a body renovation is fat burning cardiovascular exercise. Cardio significantly burns body fat and improves heart rate to an age appropriate, healthy level. Ideally 30 to 40 minutes daily is recommended. This doesn’t have to be in a gym on a treadmill or elliptical machine! Instead, take a brisk walk with the dog, hike up a mountain or take a bike ride. It can also be done in segments. Try 20 minutes on the treadmill before exercising and then another 20 minutes on the elliptical machine to finish off your workout. Good luck with your personal renovation!

Chest Press on ball Targets: Core, Chest, Glutes Multi functional exercise: Breast press on a core. Hold bum tight with body aligned, and elbows at a 90 degree angle. Press up into a chest press.

Multi muscle and functional exercises (walking lunges with biceps curls or a step-up with shoulder press) will be more beneficial than doing single muscle exercise. Include a variety of cardio exercises in your personal renovation regime – to keep your workouts fresh. Focus on keeping your core tight in everyday activities. This will help improve posture and muscle strength. When exercising, always remember to exhale when exerting force.

My Nana is one in approximately 500,000 Canadians affected by the Alzheimer’s disease. Once a reserved and classic Hollywood type, Alzheimer’s has dramatically changed her. She makes elaborate plans to journey to countries she’s never been to, and indulges in fine wines, something she has never done in her life. For anyone who has a loved one suffering with the disease, it seems like such a terrifying world to live in - a world of the unknown. My Nana finds incredible joy in every day she lives. She writes poetry and journals, and then finds them a few days later and is absolutely thrilled and entertained by her words. My family members are having a tremendously difficult time coping with my Nana’s condition. I look into her aged, grey eyes and see love, wonder and happiness… and even though she often doesn’t know who I am, she is delighted to meet me every time I see her. Renovating can be time of high drama; traumatic and allconsuming for many people. Without question, it is expensive, physically exhausting and emotionally taxing. There will be days when you barely have enough energy to smile. Inevitably, there will be glitches with suppliers and trades, and disagreements with a spouse or family member. For major renovations that take months to complete, you may be at the end of your rope before you get to the end of your renovation.

After all, a home renovation is about realizing the dream of a better, more liveable space for yourself and your family… don’t lose sight of that along the way.
