A park is an incredible asset to any place where people choose to live together. The facility improves the health of families by encouraging physical and familyoriented activities. It reduces urban sprawl by providing much needed green space, and it provides a convenient and proper venue for events. But the intangible value of a park to a community cannot be calculated. It is a focal point of organization, volunteerism and pride. It reduces crime by giving residents an outlet for healthy activity. A public park provides a common ground for neighbors of all ages and backgrounds to take ownership of their community
toward building a district park to serve the many families of Puna. Mr. Komata said he is very excited to see this park come closer to fruition. Plans for the first phase of the park include fields for baseball and softball, multi-purpose fields and three covered multi-purpose courts, so important to this rainy area. Construction of individual features may be devdloped in phases, depending on the availability of funding. A planning process involving the community, the County of Hawaii, and project designers WCIT Architecture has been ongoing since 2012. Several features in the master plan, like a large gathering place and a venue for performing arts, were a direct result of Puna residents voicing their opinions as part of the park’s master planning process. It is no secret that the town of Pahoa and surrounding area have rallied the community around its sports successes. Pahoa High School has turned into a basketball and volleyball power, and significantly, the 2010 Dagger basketball team was a source of Puna pride when it won the Division II state championship. Appreciative fans were so happy that they honored the boys with a parade down main street and a rally at the school.
A long-awaited expansion of Pāhoa’s existing park into a district-level facility is coming soon to serve the many and varied recreational needs of Puna’s families. A master plan for this park was presented to the community during a recent meeting at the Pāhoa Neighborhood Facility, which itself will be incorporated into the new park.
We are certain that this expanded facility will provide a first-class venue for generations of student athletes in Puna to learn teamwork and the fundamentals of their favorite sport, but more importantly, the awesome power of community engagement, volunteerism and pride.
We are committed to giving the people of Puna access to first-class recreational opportunities. The facilities in this park will be safe places for kids to not only learn how to pass and shoot, but to learn good sportsmanship and teamwork.
