Hawai‘i Island is home to many world-class events – the Merrie Monarch Hula Festival, Hawai‘i International BillfishTournament, and the PGA’s Mitsubishi Electric Golf Championship just to name a few. But perhaps the most visible of these events is the Ironman World Championship, celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. In 1981, the race moved from O‘ahu to the Kona Coast. Since then, thousands and thousands of triathletes have battled the scorching Kona sun, temperatures in the 90s, and crosswinds approaching 45 miles an hour over the 140.6 mile course, all to hear four words – “You are an Ironman!”

I’m especially excited about the Ironman not only as the Mayor of Hawai‘i County, but as a triathlete in training. Seeing the commitment and perseverance of nearly 1,800 athletes as they swim 2.4 miles in Kailua Bay, bike 112 miles all the way to Kohala, and top it off with a 26.2-mile run is truly inspirational. We are appreciative of the entire Ironman team, from the management to the many volunteers that make the race happen, and the hospitality of the Hawai‘i Island community. I hope to see you all at the finish line on October 12!
