While we celebrate all the good things, we must also remember that many of our friends and neighbors are less fortunate. We have a kuleana, a responsibility, to them as well. Flood Insurance Rates Change as New Law Goes Into Effect. Are you in a Flood Zone? Planning on Buying? In 2012, the U.S. Congress passed the Flood Insurance Reform Act of 2012 which calls on the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), and other agencies, to make a number of changes to the way the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) is run. As the law is implemented, some of these changes have already occurred, and others will be implemented in the coming months. Key provisions of the legislation will require the NFIP to raise rates to reflect true flood risk, make the program more financially stable, and change how Flood Insurance Rate Map (FIRM) updates impact policyholders. Additional changes are expected to be adopted over the next few months. The tropics are full of unique and helpful bugs but also those “unwanteds�. Termites, for instance, cause harm to structures, landscaping, furniture and more. Bed bugs are highly transferrable and we all know what they like to do! Who can forget the B52 bombers who like to fly in for dinner or turning on the kitchen light in the middle of the night only to find a multitude of scattering roaches? Fortunately, science has enhanced human knowledge about the unwanted creatures of this world, giving us freedom to manage them. Thank you, science and scientists! In managing or treating infestations, the first step is to properly identify the bug. Methodical treatments are a must to manage pests and dependent upon proper identification to combat the problem or continually manage an area long term. To help ID and select the treatment, it is best handled by the professionals. Chemical compounds in pesticides are complicated and the more expensive ones highly target their adversary to be more environmentally safe and effective. Professional pest companies licensed by the state should be who you turn to. They handle these better treatment plans to ensure peace of mind and probably cost about the same as a do-it-yourself-treated plan.
