Avoid the mistake of disbelieving that a tiny shrub can grow into a behemoth. If planting specifications call for 30 inches of space between shrubs of the variety you’ve chosen, give them a full 30 inches. Under good growing conditions, the plants eventually will need that elbow room.

he poet Robert Frost wrote that “good fences make good neighbors.” If those fences are alive and blooming, it makes for good neighbors and an eye-pleasing neighborhood. Hedges, vine-covered fences or a row of trees create green borders that provide contour and drama in a landscape. The most common hedges in the U.S. are planted with privet, which is hardy in all but the most northern climates. Other evergreens commonly used for hedges include boxwoods, spruces, yews, arborvitae and hollies. In Southern gardens, hydrangeas can be planted to provide a blooming hedge with soft edges. For more formidable borders, Spanish bayonet, palmetto and other prickly shrubs will keep even
the most inquisitive dog or person at bay.
For a conventional hedge, seek out plants with an upright and tight grow habit. The shrub of choice also needs to be able to tolerate repeated pruning, since hedges are usually maintained at 6 to 8 feet. Taller, more privacy-producing installations would be called a “screen planting” and might involve layers of shrubs, trees and perennials, as explained by “This Old House.” For advice on what works best as a hedge in your area, stop by a garden center or nursery. If you have a fence in place, soften its lines with vines such as ivy, Virginia creeper, honeysuckle, jasmine or passionflower. Keep in mind that many vines are vigorous growers and will spread happily into other areas of the yard if not contained.

Plants should be trimmed before they put forth the effort to set buds and produce new growth. >> When shaping a hedge, start from the bottom and work up. >> One common misstep in maintaining hedges is allowing plants to become wider at the top than the bottom. The top of the bush should be narrower, allowing sunlight to reach its lower section. >> Keeping a healthy hedge or vine involves more than just taking away. The hedge comes with a history
H
edges — or hedgerows — have been used to create boundaries since before Roman times. Trees and shrubs grown into neat, sometimes nearly impenetrable rows is one of the iconic sights of the British countryside, where some hedgerows are truly ancient. There’s even an organization in England called the National Hedge Laying Society that’s dedicated to preserving the history of the country’s hedgerows and information about regional styles of hedgelaying. Early hedgerows were made of thorn branches woven together to make a formidable barrier with the dual purpose of keeping livestock from straying
outside its boundaries while holding trespassers at bay. Some hedgerows consisted simply of a line of trees left standing when land was cleared. The heyday of hedgerows in England came during the Enclosure Movement of the 18th and 19th centuries. The movement enabled wealthy landowners to mark property boundaries with hedges to provide pasture for their livestock and exclude freeroaming animals. While many venerable hedgerows still exist in the U.K., the advent of modern fencing materials such as barbed wire supplanted the art of hedgelaying in contemporary British agriculture. Interest in using hedgerows is reviving, however, as landowners are learning about the environmental benefits of planting living fences, which provide wildlife habitat, help prevent soil loss and reduce flooding.

Fern~tastic One of the most ancient plants can find a place in even the most modern setting

ith their graceful fronds and hardy, no-fuss constitutions, ferns are favorites in the landscape and in the home. There are many varieties of ferns, an ancient family of plants that pre-
dates even the dinosaurs. Most ferns prefer shady, moist areas – and if you’ve ever come across a ferny grotto on a woodland hike, you probably felt like you’d stumbled into a fairyland. Some ferns such as sword ferns and rock ferns will do well in dry environments once they’re well-established. However, most ferns need moist
conditions to reproduce. Ferns don’t produce a seed like flowering plants – they reproduce via spores, those little dots you often see on the underside of fronds. Each spore is capable of growing into a mature fern, but only if the conditions are just right. Ferns can add a touch of soft texture to the landscape and work
well for defining shady woodland paths and for fringing ponds and other water features. Ferns with bold growth habits can be planted with shrubs to fill in bare patches and mask bare bottom branches. Ferns will also make an attractive screen around the foundation of a house or along a fence. Ferns make excellent houseplants, as well. The Boston fern is the quintessential hanging plant and also looks wonderful atop a plant stand. You can make an indoor fern garden on a window sill or in a dish planter by planting baby ferns – try combining maidenhair, rabbit foot, button and Japanese painted ferns for a variety of color and foliage.
Glub, glub … help! More ferns die from overwatering than from lack of water. Check before watering by sticking your finger into the soil – if it’s damp, hold off. Ferns with drooping, yellowing fronds have been overwatered but will bounce back if given a chance to dry out.
Once established, ferns require
remarkably little care to flourish. Supply a steady supply of moisture and the right light conditions – filtered sun or partial shade outside, indirect light inside – and you’ll have healthy, happy plants. Indoor ferns like a regular light misting, as well.
Meet a few landscaping favorites Ferns come in a wide variety of foliage types and growth habits. Your local nursery or extension service can recommend varieties that will grow well in your region. Ferns commonly used in the landscape include: � Cinnamon fern – The cinnamon fern is named for the hue of its new

fronds and will add color and texture to the landscape. It can grow up to four feet tall. � Royal fern – The lacy foliage of the royal fern can grow up to four feet tall. This fern prefers a fairly acidic soil. � Japanese painted fern – This fern has silvery foliage and lovely dark stems. Keep it well-watered for best
results. � Maidenhair fern – The maidenhair fern (Adiantum raddianum, at left) may look dainty but is hardy if kept well-watered. � Southern wood fern – This fern grows well in Zones 9 and 10 and will grow to a height of about three feet. It can take some direct sun.

ou can thank the Victorian passion for collecting rare things for the modern popularity of ferns. In the mid-19th century, Victorian England was gripped by fern mania, a condition that even had its own title – pteridomania. In 1829, physician and amateur horticulturalist Nathaniel Ward invented the “Wardian case,” a terrarium-like glass enclosure that would enable him to grow his beloved ferns. In 1842, he published the book “On the Growth of Plants in Glazed Cases,” igniting a public passion for fern cultivation and collection and launching an avalanche of books about ferns and fern culture. More than 400 such books were published in England before 1900. Fern enthusiasts constructed ferneries,
or specialty fern gardens, and went on fern-hunting parties that were part social gatherings, part botanical excursions where romances blossomed along with the passion for these plants. Professional fern hunters also ventured farther afield to find rare and exotic specimens such as the New Zealand tree fern. Ferneries flourished in theaters, museums, churches and even lunatic asylums (the delicate plants were thought to sooth the inmates). Fern motifs appeared on everything from Wedgwood pottery to fine linens,. England’s fabled ferneries languished in the early 20th century, but the fondness for ferns has revived in recent years and many of the most distinguished Victorian ferneries have been restored and are once again open to the public.
