very little grass shack should have its own tiki bar, and it’s easy to claim a corner of the yard or deck to create your own tropical party oasis, a spot where friends and family can sit, sip and socialize on a sunny afternoon.

Add greenery Whether you go tiki or conventional with an outdoor bar, greenery will help set the mood. For a tropical feel, plants such as palms in pots can be grouped to create cozy seating areas. For fern-bar ambiance, hang spider plants, petunias, philodendrons and, of course, ferns.

Looking for a solution that’s fun and fast? There’s the self-assembled standalone bar with stools for two, maybe even all done up in bamboo. Or do you envision something more traditional, more permanent? Plan a big, bar-height countertop as part of an outdoor kitchen, new or existing. Even the most formal installation can go South Seas casual when inspiration strikes. To start, pick a spot for your watering hole. You don’t want to situate it in a part of the yard or deck that gets a lot of foot traffic. Think about where you’d like people to gather. Is there shade? Will guests have easy access to the house? o matter what kind of home bar you’re setting up, you’ll need to stock it with some basics. For a gathering where alcohol will not be served, or for guests who prefer nonalcoholic beverages, the list beyond ice and water might include soft drinks, lemonade, a homemade alcohol-free punch or virgin cocktails, such as frozen strawberry daiquiris sans rum.

Nowadays, it’s possible to purchase highquality plastic versions of bar glassware, perfect for outdoor use. Keep an assortment of basic mixers on hand – juices such as cranberry, orange and pineapple, tomato juice or Bloody Mary mix, margarita mix, sour mix, tonic water, club soda and colas. Rose’s lime juice, Angostura bitters, simple syrup and grenadine will take your tropical mixology to the next level.

For a party where alcohol will be served, invest in a good, comprehensive cocktail how-to guide and practice making a few favorite drinks before inviting friends over to admire your shaker skills. For the grand opening party, pick a theme and a signature drink and decorate accordingly.

Don’t skimp on garnishes, which can be prepared ahead of time. Include lemon and lime wedges, pineapple chunks, cherries, cocktail onions, caper berries, celery sticks, pickled green beans, fresh herbs – whatever would make a cocktail taste and look better. And don’t forget the paper umbrellas!
