ome swimming pools come in an impressive array of sizes, shapes and configurations. When it comes to filling them, the only two options are salt water or fresh. As to which works better, well, that’s another choice. An estimated 1.3 million U.S. pool owners prefer salt water, citing easier upkeep, less eye and skin irritation, and a more efficient way to add chlorine. About 7 million fresh-water users counter with their vote for a lower up-front investment, reduced risk of stain and corrosion, and the proven reliability from over a century of good service. But while the number of salt-water pools has increased dramatically in the past few years — about 70 percent of new installations, according to one survey — each side poses issues to consider. On the one hand, a mildly salty swim may feel as smooth as showering in soft water. But not everyone’s a

Alkalinity – Vital for keeping a proper pH level so chlorine doesn’t lose its kick, it responds nicely to muriatic acid (too high) or baking soda (too low).

The secret to maintaining its magic trick of shocking chlorine from salt water is a cell clear of calcium and other deposits. Without regular cleaning and a replacement cell every few years, overchlorinated salt can eat away your pool’s interior finish, decking and metal fittings.
Probably the biggest difference between a saltwater pool and its freshwater counterpart is salt’s use of a chlorine generator. What’s that, you say? Doesn’t every pool need chlorine to keep its water from turning into a swamp? Well, yes is the short answer. Chlorine is that sanitizing stuff you depend on to gobble up scum and clear the water. But there are two radically contrasting ways to deliver it. In a fresh-water system, chlorine is manually distributed in liquid form or tablets. Chlorine generators rely on a process called electrolysis so you don’t have to buy the chemical, store it or even touch it. Which, of course, is a huge advantage for those who have trouble keeping up with their pool’s basic chemistry.

The Merrie Monarch Festival is a hula competition named for and held in honor of Hawaii’s last King, David Kalakaua, and is one of the Big Island’s most prestigious cultural events.
