hether we’re talking about a few square feet around a front door or a grand entry hall, a foyer’s easy to ignore. After all, you walk through it or by it and on to the real destination — kitchen, boudoir, front door. So let us pause for a moment, mid-stride, to consider the entry.
Easy ideas for jazzing up foyers large and small
My foyer or entry is: A. A welcoming and welldecorated delight. B. Nice, but not likely to win any big trophies for style. C. Sometimes mistaken for a storage unit.
Hats off to all the A’s out there, but most of us would pick B with the occasional day rated C. If your entryway is a perennial runner-up in the decorating sweepstakes, here are a few ideas (aside from clearing away clutter) for helping it stand out.
Establishing identity Writing for Better Homes & Gardens, decorator Sarah Egge notes that the most basic issue in decorating a foyer often lies in defining the space — setting it apart from the rest of the house and giving it character.
There are several ways to create a “there.” Color is one, and even a postage-stamp-sized spot can be clearly defined by paint on all or part of a wall. The easiest boundary setter, no paintbrush required, is a good rug. Wool is wonderful, but if durability is a major concern shop around for an outdoor rug, one of those synthetic numbers that can be hosed clean, in an appealing pattern and color. Other ways to create definition: a well-chosen piece of furniture, no matter how small, or an interesting hanging light or slim table lamp.
Adding pop! The foyer is a good place to try a little
If you’d prefer the walls stay white, color can come from upholstery, wall art and a rug. Paint an old table or side chair in a contrasting or complementary shade to jazz things up.
If you’d prefer to stick with a neutral, monochromatic palette but still want to add visual interest, get sophisticated “pow” from shape and texture. For instance, white walls might be combined with a woven natural fiber rug or a tone-on-tone patterned wool one, a rustic wood console and shapely ceramic vases in pale, gleaming glazes. Quick tip
Mirror magic A foyer needs a mirror. It lets you look at you, allows guests do a quick check of themselves, and bounces light around in a most appealing way. Considering any item placed in a foyer gets the spotlight, it’s worth hunting down a mirror that’s perfect for your house.
Sidelight solutions Frequently only a few inches wide, the door-flanking windows called sidelights present special issues for a privacy-minded homeowner. One traditional, light-filtering solution is gathered, or shirred, curtains fitted to the depth of the window and held in place by short “sash” rods. To install curtains close to the glass, look for flat rods made for sidelights. For a neatly fitted window treatment that’s also easy to adjust, you can’t go wrong with madefor-the-space blinds in metal, vinyl or wood. If adjustment isn’t an issue and privacy is the main concern, “frosting” the windows with plastic film or a spray-on coating offers another option. Get a little arty with spray by masking off shapes, such as circles, with stickers or tape. After the coating’s on, remove the stickers to unveil a custom design.

n the most perfect of domestic worlds, a home’s front foyer is left to guests and a household’s everyday rough and tumble spills into what many builders now call the family foyer. Located by a side door and often off the garage, this area is traditionally called a mudroom. If you’re renovating an existing home or having a new one built, you have the opportunity to truly design this often overlooked space. Here are some considerations to keep in mind while you sketch out a second entry, whether it be a wide hallway or an actual dedicated room:

Floors Make ‘em tough: This likely goes without saying, but choose a durable and easy-toclean flooring material such as ceramic tile, good-quality vinyl or finished cement in a color or pattern that won’t showcase dirt. If the installation requires grout, go with a color that can take some grunge.

Electrical outlets Count ‘em: How many machines and gadgets will you need to plug in here? Cellphone and camera chargers, a drinking water dispenser, fans, a boot dryer, space heaters, a vacuum cleaner?
Storage and seating Reserve space for you: First of all, give yourself a place to plop down while you change shoes. A storage bench topped with a washable cushion serves double-duty.
Keep ’em dry: If you expect real mud, install a drain in the floor. Note: The drain height should end up lower than the floor.
Envision the ideal: Given the available space, what kind of cubby, shelf and cabinet/locker combination would work best? Should it be wood, composite, metal? Built-in or free-standing?
Leave room for rugs: Is the entry threshold high enough
Take inventory: Make a realistic list of items that will land
here. The average household might want to park coats, hats, shoes, dirty clothes, pet food and supplies, a cat’s litter box, sports equipment, umbrellas, backpacks and totes. Measure twice: Lockers and cubbies need to be large enough to hold all this stuff, including oversize items such as tennis rackets and skis. Get hooked! Plan on plenty of hooks or racks for hats, coats, keys, leashes and miscellanea. Leave room for junk: What’s a mud room without an old-fashioned junk drawer to catch bits and pieces such as measuring tapes, flashlights, string and loose screws?

The holiday season is here – my favorite time of year! Too often we get caught up in the stresses and challenges of everyday life. The holidays offer an opportunity to gather with family and friends, to enjoy traditions that have been passed from generation to generation, and to reflect on our blessings. I am thankful for my wife, Takako, and my children, Liam, Justin, and Mahina. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve my community alongside a team of committed leaders. I am thankful for the men and women of our armed forces and our first responders who keep our families safe and our nation free.
While we celebrate all the good things, we must also remember that many of our friends and neighbors right here on Hawai‘i Island are less fortunate. We have a kuleana, a responsibility, to them as well. Let us keep in mind those in need, and be inspired to serve one another with generous hearts and open hands. This holiday season is indeed a time to remind us that the values we all share should far outweigh whatever differences there are among us. We are truly blessed to call Hawai‘i Island our home.
