Well-made kitchen cabinets from a few decades ago, with their solid wood boxes, were built to last for decades, so refacing those sturdy old workhorses is a viable option for many wannabe kitchen updaters. When should you reface instead of replace?
If poor kitchen layout isn’t the problem: No manner of updating cabinetry facades will solve for a poorly designed kitchen. If you see yourself still encountering design issues after cabinetry refacing, then undertake the expense of a redesign instead. If the materials used in initial construction have stood the test of time: As long as your cabinets aren’t falling to pieces, metal isn’t rusting and floors haven’t settled to leave cabinets out of line, refacing might be a good option. If cost is an overriding consideration: Most refacing jobs will come in at about half to one-third the cost of a full remodel.
If your organizational needs are met: Because modern cabinet design trends toward custom organizational solutions, full replacement of cabinets often can be advantageous if you find yourself struggling with toppling Tupperware or a lack of convenient storage.
Another option: Do both A kitchen designer or contractor might be able to suggest a workable solution that salvages old cabinets where possible in a redesigned kitchen that also incorporates new construction. You could have the best of old and new while exercising a green option — reuse.
