Hello, It’s
1.
Valentines season is here with us, and while we all want gifts, we can look out of the ordinary and gift our loved ones with items that will long outlast the season and give service throughout the year.
2. Some leather for the man in your life is like fine wine and elegant jewellery to the woman in your life. A unique belt or watch matched with the perfect pair of well fitting shoes will be a show stopper. 1. Insurance is not just medical cover and car cover, your home contents are equally important. It’s your hard earned money that has furnished your home, so get home insurance for peace of mind when you are away. This assures you the freedom to conduct your daily activities with ease. 2. Take the climate into consideration when building your dream home. Is your home able to withstand the elements of nature like floods, lightning and other weather related matters? When choosing where to buy your land, don’t fall into the affordability line, consider the location and the environment. 3. The middle class are the next big investors in real estate in Kenya. If you are a developer, build homes suited for the middle class, both in affordability and taste.

areas due to the decreasing water levels in our dams and lakes. Some parts of the country are also experiencing depreciating forest cover. So, what can you do to make your living space more climate friendly and what makes you a climate conscious home owner? Right now, the heat is almost unbearable and other times the temperatures are beyond freezing point. When building your home, if you take climate change into consideration, your home may stay in tip top condition for longer. When renovating or redesigning, if you give special attention to this area, your home may offer you a comfortable stay for longer or even for life. The norm when building and most private developers opt for tiles when roofing buildings, so ideally when one commences building their home, this is the go to for roofing your home. However, have you thought about the best roofing material for your home? There are many types of material in the market today that are kind to nature, aesthetically appealing and still serve the purpose of covering those you love and under your roof whether a commercial or residential space. There are many holiday homes up for sale on sea shores and lining the beaches. Well, this could be a very enticing option and who doesn’t want to live overlooking the beauty of the lake or ocean? However, have you considered how stable your home or establishment will be should a tsunami come knocking or when heavy rains come pounding? If you want to ensure your home stays safe, as it should be, you need to be aware and be ready to adopt to future climate changes. Home insurance is a key element of this – make sure to insure your home against the elements of the weather like flooding, lightning and the like. when acquiring, building or just living in a home you already consider the future: for example, how livable will it be, will it accommodate a growing family, is it affordable, and is it likely to increase in value. In addition to this, you should also ask what the climate will be like and whether the home will suit these conditions and serve you well. If designing your first home, engage an architect who will guide you well and help you design their right home for the climatic area you are settling in. Get a design that is flexible to the climatic conditions of the area, consider the climatic variables that could affect the building and with the guidance of the architect, get to know whether climate change impacts affect the site and the building.

TRENDS
2017– Not so new Year, New Goals Before we are well into the year, and a quarter or more of us start abandoning the cliché resolutions we make at the beginning of the year, we take time to offer some relevant tips to guide your finance, home and health decisions. Words: Kelai Wanjiru
1
Home Insurance With the age we are living in, it is important to stop taking home insurance for granted. Insure everything in your home, even the cheapest item. Get to know your neighborhood and neighbors. Most of the time, the people who steal from you are neighbors and guards. So take time to ensure your property is safe.
2
Get out of Bad Debt There is such a thing as good and bad debt. Get out of the rut of bad debt and save yourself the headache of sorting out your finances. Start with the large debts and start clearing them little by little. If you start with our tip no. 2, you will easily sort out your financial crisis and have peace of mind.
3
You do not have to be the oldest thing in your house Who says that because the lounge seat
was a wedding gift, you must stay with it for the rest of your life? Or your wall has to stay white? Change things up a bit, change the sofa seat, change your wall paint, bring colour into your life, you do not have to be the oldest thing in your house.
4
Shorten your mortgage repayment You have bought your home on a mortgage plan. Make your life easier this year by straining yourself a bit more by increasing your monthly payments. This will greatly shorten the payment period and give you peace of mind. If you go by our tip No. 2, this will be a good step.
5
Live a Healthy Lifestyle Away from the cliché unrealistic resolutions like I must loose 20 kgs by March this year and the like, this is the most common resolution people make – instead of aspiring to loose the kilos, aspire to eat healthy and be active. You will be surprised at how fast you lose the pounds and feel a lot healthier.
7
Be kind, help others A popular, non-selfish New Year’s resolution, being kind is one of the most gratifying human elements. Help out your child’s school, donate good clothes that will get love from someone needy, volunteer at church, mentor a child.
8
Enjoy your Home Your home is the most serious investment you can make. Don’t break a sweat getting a home then you do not enjoy it. Enjoy it, have fun, laugh a lot and make lots of lasting memories. Buying a home is an adventure you want to live to its fullest.
6
Save 10% of your income This is easily one of the biggest challenges every person encounters – at least I know I face this challenge every month. The best way to start this is have a budget and just start before you commit to any spending.

As the real estate market continues to evolve, focus has shifted to Kenyans who fall in the low to middle income bracket. Even as property prices continue to rise steadfastly and developers leverage on high end properties in the city’s urban environs, there has risen a great need to service the housing needs of the rising middle income earners who are gaining purchasing power and low income earners. Sigimo Enterprises, a fast rising developer of middle to high end homes in Nairobi, has also commenced development of apartments for the middle income bracket along Tabere Crescent, Kileleshwa. Sigimo Enterprises, having observed the building trends in the country, opted to make a difference by building homes that have a unique aspect and leverage on the unique attributes of environments. Sigimo Enterprises develops homes that produce a characteristic personal feeling in every space and develop one of-a-kind homes with an independent attitude – these are what can be defined as boutique apartments. Sigimo Enterprises, developer of commercial and residential properties across the country, has endeavored to provide affordable and quality homes in areas normally targeted for high income earners. HIGH-END LIVING FOR MIDDLE CLASS
Uptake of modern apartments targeting low to middle income earners in Nairobi’s urban Kileleshwa suburb on the rise. Words: Homes Kenya team that’s easy on the pocket. Real estate developers have in the recent past given great focus to high income earners and built houses to cater to people who can afford upwards of Kshs. 30 Million for a modest house in upmarket areas. However, the demand for housing
for low to middle income far outstrips the supply for the same. It is with this in mind that Sigimo Enterprises have delved into putting up affordable developments that can meet the demands of upcoming middle income earners who are looking luxurious yet affordable homes in middle

market and urban areas of the city. Over time, the middle income earners have resulted to taking up housing ideally meant for low income earners as the houses being built by private developers are usually too expensive for middle income earners to afford. When real estate started becoming a viable and attractive investment option for business people, Kileleshwa was one of the first areas in the city to see a high infiltration of apartments. In the 80’s and 90’s, the area was characterized by
government owned masionettes and flats, and a small percentage of stand alone bungalows owned by the affluent persons in the society. With the real estate bubble becoming bigger and bigger, the upper middle income bracket of people wanted to have access to luxurious and beautiful homes but affordable, and this saw the rise of apartments and town houses in almost every corner of the Kileleshwa suburb. There is now an over-saturation of apartments and townhouses that have become too expensive for the Kenyan to afford. Every Kenyan should have access to affordable housing and still live well in comfort and it is this that has motivate developers like Sigimo Enterprises to build homes that offer aesthetic appeal, good amenities, ideal locations and ultimately are affordable and easy on the pocket.
The recently commenced SpringHill Park by Sigimo Enterprises is already receiving a lot of interest from potential home buyers who are attracted by the visual appeal of the apartments that are set to have a rooftop swimming pool – a feature that none of the apartments in the Kileleshwa area have. The premier development of elegant 3 bedroom apartments and penthouses built in the fast growing locality, overlook the scenic Arboretum Forest and offer a tranquil and serene living environment for the discerning home owner who would like a home in close proximity to the Central Business District.

A London apartment with Authentic Style Words: Nick Lee / Almas Shamsee Images: www.maishadesign.com
On the banks of the famous River Thames, a historic English building known as Butlers Wharf houses one of the most beautiful apartments that exemplifies contemporary style with authenticity and elegant stature. The Thames Riverside three bedroomed luxury flat which sits pretty in the listed building, lies between the picturesque Shad Thames street and the Thames Path, overlooking both the bridge and St Katharine Docks on the other side of the river.

MY HOME
It is a stunning warehouse conversion with beautiful exposed bricks and characteristic cast iron windows on all sides of the walls. Situated on the third floor, it has a stunning view of Tower Bridge, which is just 200 metres away, and provides the perfect backdrop for a stunning interior design. When the owners of the house were refurbishing, they ideally wanted a London home for entertaining their friends and guests - a space that was exciting and spectacular where they could stay and be very comfortable. The project took one year to complete and included a full reconfiguration of the floor plan, electrical plan and bespoke furniture and finishes. The vision for the design was to create an elegant and comfortable space with luxurious touches and a spectacular bar for entertaining. The floor and lighting plan was redesigned to allow more open spaces and more light to fill the flat, as the ceilings were low and the original design left the flat felling dark and claustrophobic. From the moment ones enters the home from the foyer, it is clear to see that recessed wall radiators were used throughout the apartment to ensure a clean and sleek

finish. The sitting area is highlighted with rich burgundies and creams, with smoked glass and dark wood accents, while the bedrooms have distinctive pops of colour and pattern – each with bespoke joinery and individual upholstery. Each room has its own theme yet is connected to the other rooms with beautiful custom-made furniture and running brass and a smoked glass theme across the contemporarily styled apartment. It was very important to us the designer, that each element in the design followed a subtle continuity. The standout features of this apartment, are the spectacular illuminated Alabaster bar, the en-suite copper and brass marble bathrooms and the glass wall between the hallway and the guest twin bedroom. All these features add to the design to elevate the apartment to a higher sense of luxury. The designer concentrated on a design that allows more light to shine through the apartment to eradicate the dark corridorlike feeling. The double doors of the middle 32 | HOMES KENYA Issue 67
bedroom were removed and replaced with a fixed glass panel to allow light from the riverside end of the flat to flow down the hallway and lighten the middle guest twin bedroom. This creates a new focal point in the apartment and has transformed a dark and claustrophobic area to a welcoming and light flooded space. The design concept for the kitchen which is located off the main sitting and dining areas, concentrated on a completely hidden kitchen with no visible appliances in the living area to create a living and dining space that is created for entertaining. The kitchen is discreetly tucked away behind beautiful smoked glass pocket doors, which were incorporated into the design of what is the main feature of the living area - the bar. To create something truly spectacular for the bar, a bespoke lit alabaster bar was installed with tailored panels on each side, framing both the bar and pocket doors. This ensured that the main focus of the living area is the alabaster, which is simply
stunning and deserves to be celebrated in this way. In the living area and hallway, a burgundypearl colour palette was used with delicate brass and smoked glass accents. The rich burgundy tones of the furniture and lamps complement the glowing alabaster bar beautifully and give the living space a soft yet elegant ambience. The smoked glass is replicated in the kitchen doors and the lamp details, while the brass is evident in both the lamps and studding of the bespoke furniture. Every detail has been carefully considered, such as the geometric pattern on the rug that is mirrored on the back of the dining chairs, to create a sophisticated coordinated interior. A pair of base lamps, on either side of the sofa, were chosen to provide low level lighting for intimate evenings and the lit up bespoke wall joinery adds a soft feature to the room, allowing the client to add a personal touch with ornaments, books and accessories. But the true star of this space

for us is the bespoke Alabaster bar. It was handcrafted by Atelier Alain Ellouz and carefully designed to fit perfectly into the panelled wall. All three bedrooms are situated at the opposite end of the apartment, facing the famous cobbled walkway of Shad Thames. It was important to the owners of the home to inject colour into the bedrooms whilst maintaining a neutral backdrop. Each bedroom therefore has subtle pops of individual colour, whilst maintaining the underlying neutral-brass theme of the apartment. glass shower panels for a stunning finish. In order to distinguish the master bathroom from the guest bathrooms we decided to choose a rich verde fantastico marble stone against antique brass taps in the master and a deep noir st laurent marble stone against copper taps for the two guest bathrooms. The lighting was designed to accentuate the best features of the bathroom: the stunning marble walls and copper taps. We designed three lighting circuits that could be used to highlight different parts of the bathrooms and so create different atmospheres within. The first circuit is dedicated to general lighting and is composed of a grid of down lights for everyday use. This is complemented by the
second circuit, which creates subtle focal points and task lights by lighting up the niches, shower wall and mirror cabinet. The third circuit is more atmospheric – it is activated with a sensor and turns on a soft LED light wash under the sink and bath creating a beautiful floating effect and a soft night light. The result is stunning and makes these bathrooms truly unique. The second key feature of this apartment is the alabaster bar. It is a spectacular piece of craftsmanship and gives the living space a unique look and feel. We chose this material not only for its stunning look and feel, but also for its hardwearing quality. It is treated with resin, which turns this incredibly delicate and fragile stone into a resilient and durable element, perfect for bar counter tops. What makes this material even more striking is the fact it is lit up by LEDs, which can be adjusted from warm to cool, depending on the mood and time of day. Our clients wanted a dramatic feature in their living area and this alabaster bar emulates drama and luxury gloriously. To quote Almas, “As a designer the highest form of approval is of course the one of our clients, who were delighted and quite emotional when we took them to see their new flat for the first time and told us that they had never imagined the flat could look as beautiful as it does.” The interior design of the apartment has been voted Best London Residential Apartment Interior Design by the International Property Awards. Manufacturers of major sanitary ware brands have begun to notice this trend and are now setting up shop to service the growing middle class market that is looking for style, comfort and practicability. Kohler, a Wisconsin-based company, is the latest company to express confidence in the growing market for high-end fittings. The 143-year old company that designs and manufactures bathtubs, showers, faucets and related accessories announced that it was planning to open a Nairobi-office in 2017, confident that its portfolio would find a ready market in the region “The potential of this market was clear and we realised the need to further strengthen our African roots prompting the opening of our dedicated office based in Johannesburg in February 2014 and this office will definitely service the entire sub-Saharan region,” said Kohler senior vice president-human resources and stewardship Laura Kohler. Two Rivers mixed-use development that is coming along the Runda suburb of Nairobi has advertised Villeroy & Boch as one of its tenants. Villeroy & Boch is a German manufacturer of high-quality bathroom sinks, basins and other ceramic products.

housing for the middle class and lower end of the market. We also have hotels, public projects, residential and commercial projects with a high demand. This is a substantive market,” says Mr Nahinga. In Nairobi alone there are at least 20 new buildings coming up he adds. In the residential space there are apartments that are of the same quality as those found in the suburbs of major cities. Upcoming holiday resorts and gated communities are other ready markets for such products. The trend of green buildings or structures that are put up in a sustainable way is also influencing what types of sanitary ware that will be used. Some of the new entrants are introducing products that not only quench the aesthetic tastes of customers but also the fulfil their desire to have properties that are built in a sustainable way and these include for instance products that save water. Mr Nahinga however notes that it is not enough to open a showroom. If these players want to make high returns they have to go a step further and set up fullyfledged operations. “Shipping and logistics may not be a viable option for smaller quantities and so it
makes economic sense for the players to establish a presence here to serve the growing demand,” added Mr Nahinga. Turkey’s government for one has already stated that it is encouraging its firms to set up plants locally as opposed to only shipping finished
“We are urging Turkish companies not to see Kenya simply as a market for their products. We want them to come and partner with their Kenyan counterparts to produce goods and services here in Kenya,” said Turkish envoy to Kenya Deniz Eke while marking the celebrations of Turkey’s national day in November.

GARDENING
Your Terrace The eyes of your garden
When we say the eyes to the soul, it automatically means that when one looks into your eyes, they get to see your soul, your feelings, your mood. The same can be said for your terrace – when one walks out your terrace doors, they should be opened up to the beauty of your outdoor garden, and what better way to do this than spruce it up? Words: Kelai Wanjiru Every one of us has a patio or a terrace in our homes, and judging by many homes, when looking for décor and furnishing for your home, one rarely thinks about the exterior. People always endeavor to make the interior of their homes beautiful, but rarely do we ever take time to think about our patios, terraces and lawns.
Take the time to brighten up your outdoors with inviting and invigorating furnishings. The exterior of your home is a direct reflection of the interior. The outside impression of your home is synonymous with the first impression you make of your home. Most of us do not appreciate the value of a beautiful exterior.
Considering most patios and terraces are in the back of the house, most people do not give this area a lot of consideration and many people ignore this important space. Instead of using this space as a second store, why don’t you clean it out and make it a refreshing outdoor room?
When people walk into your home, they should be mesmerized by the beauty of your exterior. Wherever it is that you live, be it a flat, apartment, estate or a bungalow, the first thing people see when they come to your home is the entrance. It may be hard to create a beautiful entrance

to your home if you live in a block of flats, but if you live in a private space, you have the responsibility of making your exterior beautiful. When choosing terrace furniture there are various things that you need to
GARDENING
take into consideration. The options are endless when it comes to choosing outdoor furnishing. Your style and taste is the foremost important thing when choosing your furniture and coverage. You want furniture that is a reflection of you and also refreshing. Long gone are the days when the basic white or grey tents were placed on the outdoors. Make a design statement and reflect your unique taste by putting up tents that speak elegance and style. Your terrace should be your outdoor oasis so make the most out of your outdoors by preparing this very important part of your living space. The terrace can also be accessorized with herbs, potted plants and wall décor that reflects your style and personality. Most homeowners would love to keep plants and flowers around the house but have no idea what plant to have and has no inkling of the kind of plants that are suitable for an indoor setting. You can have
all those beautiful little add-ons that are an invaluable part of your indoor space. They make your space more meaningful, more attractive, and sometimes even more functional. Quite often too, they even make your home more livable. The outdoors is also a great setting in which you can incorporate these little or sometimes large ‘pieces’ of you. It is summer here, what with the soldering January heat, and there’s nothing quite as lovely as sitting out in your terrace on a hot afternoon under the canopy of trees lining your backyard. So when you are ready to add some seating in your garden, you will be faced with a wide range of garden seating to choose from. Before purchasing your garden seating, take your tape measure out and plan! Measure the size of the garden to ensure any furniture will fit, or indeed get through the garden gate. Try as many options as you can before committing, and make sure everyone else in the family does too. Classic tables and chairs remain a key part of many terraces, but it’s also worth considering some slightly more unorthodox seating. Have you looked at wood or metal benches, arbours (sheltered benches), sun loungers or swing seats? When you decide on the perfect seats for your garden, be sure to place them strategically to make the most of the sun and the views of the best part of the garden.

Step into the Concorde Hotel, the recently opened spanking new hotel, set in the leafy Parklands suburb of Nairobi, easily accessible via the new Thika superhighway and Limuru road or via the bustling Westlands business district. Words: Tricia Wanjala Photos: Black Swan Media
It is situated in a historic neighbourhood which boasts some of Nairobi’s oldest family homes, some dating over a century. In recent years the area became renowned for shopping and for delicious Indian cusine; notably in the nearby Diamond plaza. Progress moves swiftly, and from the top floor of the Concord hotel, you can see a new swanky addition - Diamond II.
This shopping mall will soon boast Nairobi’s newest revolving rooftop restaurant. In spite of the nearness of shopping and dining amenities, The Concord remains nestled inside a residential cul-de-sac. Therefore it offers a quiet and peaceful ambiance suitable for family recreation, wedding parties, business meetings and conferences, as well as local and international tourists. Indeed they recently hosted a large delegation of overseas visitors who had come to Nairobi for an international convention at Kasarani stadium with an attendance of oer 70,000 people. Thanks to the impeccable decor and the choice of four different restaurants within the Concord, they were able to benefit from the wide variety of cuisine offered. The Concord was designed by a team of architects in Dubai. The same firm handled the interior decor, from the rooms to the furniture to the individual paintings, fittings and artefacts. The main entrance is framed by two majestic palm trees evocative of the middle eastern landscape. Concord’s lobby area is akin to any modern 5 star hotel in the sleek marble and granite fixtures, the high-end leather seating, and the exquisite chandelier that lights up the high ceiling. An atrium-style design complete with skylight ensures that the interior is generously lit. Large marble grecian pillars create a timeless sense of stability, tempered by the whimsical rainbow horse sculpture. Cosy seating in modern neutral tones is accented by firebranded rugs, and deep copper overhead lampshades. A relaxing water feature doubles up as a sculptural art piece and provides soothing ambiant sounds. The classical italian marble flooring contrasts with uniquely textured black granite. White moulded ceilings with soft recessed lighting adds to the bright atmosphere in this welcoming interior. The hotel was designed to encompass principles of green living, with several energy saving features including the lighting, plumbing and use of electricity. Such environmentally sustainable features are a distinct hallmark

of international 21st century design. This warm and bright luxurious design theme is carried on in the coffee house behind the lobby, and the adjacent Bon Homie continental restaurant. Headed by an award winning Italian Chef who has worked extensively in Europe and the Middle East, it offers a good variety of hearty meals in large portions. Bon Homie features pristine white flooring contrasted with an opulent black ceiling to delightfully balance the space and create an intimate, friendly atmosphere. Bowl-shaped overhead lights coupled with arched mirrors embedded in the wooden wall art, add to this engaging ambiance. 46 || HOMES HOMES KENYA KENYA Issue Issue 67 67 46

Concord also boasts an Indian restaurant, found upstairs. Unlike the sleek clean monochromatic hues of Bon Homie, this restaurant embodies the highly detailed ornate design that is evocative of Indian art. Vibrant colours, patterned bronze artifacts and copper crockery weaves seamlessly to create a trulu authentic experience. Concord’s Pan Asian restaurant, Umami, offeres a selection of Thai, Chinese and Japanese cuisine. Shades of the most auspicious colour in Asia - red, adorn this particular eatery. Red is not only considered the colour of good luck and celebrations, but it also works as a subtle appetiser according to colour psychologists. Here at Umami restaurant the interplay between classical geometric chinese patterns, the warm soothing deep red background and symbols such as the traditional lotus flower, are definitely condusive to a hearty appetite for its Pan Asian Cuisine. This hotel features 86 rooms, at different levels. The suites and rooms are decorated in warm neutrals and funky patterned wallto-wall carpets. These help to soundproof the rooms, while providing a cosy and warm soft landing. A unique feature that is a first for a hotel in Kenya, is the entire female-only hotel floor here at Concord. Not surprisingly the rooms on this floor are bedecked in
fuschia and purple. It is a concept whereby a group or large parties of women can book rooms here and be assured that there is complete privacy and no males anywhere on the entire floor. Upstairs the penthouse suite offers the ultimate in fine living and relaxation. Below it, conferencing facillities provide theater style and round table seating for parties large or small. The highlight for families visiting Concord over the weekend is the upstairs swimming pool. Situated by Concord’s state of the art gym, and surrounded with pure glass on all aides, the poolside deck provides dazzling views
of the plush Karura forest on one side, and Westlands and the Nairobi CBD on the other. Non-residents can make use of these facilities for a day rate, while they enjoy the hotel’s dining and recreational facillities. As the newest member of this historic neighbourhood, from the Concord hotel you can still see some of Nairobi’s first colonial houses. The Concord has succeeded in blending modern with traditional, old with new, business with pleasure. This is due to the skilled execution of cosmopolitan architecture and decor with eclectic touches from Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Villa Rosa Kempinski When it opened a little over three years ago, the pink edifice by Chiromo Road took the city by a storm. In its short existence, Kempinski has hosted more global leaders that the rest of city hotels combined. The hotel’s highest accolade was being selected to play host to the immediate former president of the United States, Barrack Obama. Maybe it its Mediterranean architecture that lures one to the hotel, or perhaps it’s the global culinary repertoire (the hotel has been known to fly in specific chefs to cook for certain visiting delegations).

Words: Peter Muiruri
The jury is out. Nairobi’s best hospitality establishments have been unmasked. Eight hotels, each with its own distinctive characteristics, have taken their rightful place after a thorough rating exercise conducted by the Tourism Regulatory Authority. As Nairobi gears up for another year of hosting global events, we hereby take a look at what makes some of these hotels Nairobi’s finest.
But for those who have had the rare glimpse of the presidential suite, it is not hard to fall in love with the hotel. At 7,180 square feet, the presidential suite occupies half of the 10th floor and consists of four bedrooms, expansive living rooms, a family room, guest holding area and several ensuite bathrooms complete with Jacuzzis. Most meals for the presidential suite are prepared in a kitchen within the expansive suite. A separate dining room in the suite complete with usually serves the president and his family though there are times some presidents opt to use the general restaurants for their meals. There is even a presidential barbeque station on top of the building. By the way, Villa Rosa Kempinski shares the FiveStar status with its Masai Mara camp, Olare Mara Kempinski.

Fairmont the Norfolk The history of Norfolk could as well be the history of Kenya. The end of the 19th Century saw the British determined to create an East African Protectorate. The only way to achieve this was to create a railway deep into the wilderness. The Lunatic Line, as the railway was christened, was born. By the first years of the 20th century the line had reached a small
railway outpost, known simply as Ewaso Nairobi. The collection of tents here grew into a shantytown named Nairobi, after the original Masai name for the swamp on which it was built. On Christmas Day 1904, with Nairobi hardly a town, Maj. C.G.R. Ringer first opened the doors of The Norfolk, one of Kenya’s oldest hotels. The then 40-bedroomed hotel, with hot and cold running water and a French Chef from The
Waldorf Astoria in New York, also boasted a ladies only reading room. Ringer could not have imagined what a lasting gift he was giving to the new Colony, creating a legend that would endure long after he was gone. But did you know that Karen Blixen, author of Out of Africa, spent her first night in Nairobi at the Norfolk before moving to her beloved farmhouse at the foot of the Ngong Hills?
group chairman Richard Evans explains the concept behind the sh1.5 billion investment in the city. Hemingways Nairobi has made good use of African themes in the rooms to resonate with the nearby Ngong Hills, once haunted by Ernest Hemingway after whom the hotel chain is named. The lofty rooms of which two are penthouse style presidential suites create some good sense of space while utilizing natural light. Vaulted wooden beams in the junior suites have a rustic brown colour conveying the sense of a traditional African hut. Subdued hues and checked fabrics in light brown create an earthly ambiance. Each of the rooms – aptly named after famous Kenyan and settler figures that influenced Kenya’s modern history – is a collection of historical images that form a single theme for the room. With a 24-hour butler service, each occupied room is bound to receive a bouquet of fresh Kenyan roses on a daily basis further enhancing the moods of a guest.

Radisson Blu “Unique. Stylish. First class in any other language” This is how the newest kid on the hospitality block terms itself. Guests can enjoy the unique, color-splashed, edgy and modern ‘Urban’ room style or upgrade to a Business Class room with a choice of two additional unique room styles: ‘Naturally Cool’ and ‘NY Mansion’. Like the aforementioned hotels, it is not hard to find true African themes here. The walls resonate with creations from Makena Mwiraria of African Heritage Design Company. Then there are the sculptures above the main lounge. The Maasai man with a spear firmly grounded in the soil shows a guest in control and right at home here. The sculptures are the work of Kevin Oduor. He is also the artist behind Dedan Kimathi statue on Kimathi Street and the iconic piece at Syokimau Railway Station. There are a few things in life that can beat being under one roof in the wilderness with all your closest girlfriends. A few of my girlfriends and I pulled this rare exploit a few months ago, after several failed attempts, and it was everything we had hoped for and more.
When you think about taking a weekend break or planning a holiday, you would typically think about the Coast, the Mara, or the cliche Naivasha. However, as you will see, you don’t need to go so far to experience the beauty of our country Kenya, moreso, you get to save so much you won’t want to travel out the city or country next time. Right here in the outskirts of Nairobi and in the Great Rift Valley escarpment is Olohore Onyore, located in the famous Ngong Hills. If you are looking for an escape or a place to just wind down and meditate, this is an ideal place to visit.
On an early Saturday afternoon the six of us set off for our planned weekend getaway to a home we had discovered on the internet. Tucked in the heart of the breathtaking Ngong Hills, Olohore Onyore home is a perfect getaway for family or group of friends looking for a perfect escape from the city.
Olohore Onyore is characterized by black cotton soil, lots of dust amidst beautiful landscapes characterized by Maasai herdsmen and large groups of cattle grazing. As we drove up to the getaway, the majestic view of the Great Rift Valley and the Ngong Hills was just amazing and we were in awe of creation.
After a 2 hour drive from Nairobi, part of which was 12kms of a bumpy dirt road after Corner Baridi, we arrived at this idyllic house ready for a girls only weekend getaway. Somewhere along the way, we began wondering if we were ever going to get to our destination. The road to

backdrop of an awe-inspiring view of the beautiful landscape gives you an idea of what to expect during our stay. On the verandah is a beautiful dining table where you can dine as you take in all the breath taking scenery. This is where we would also have our al fesco meals. The bedrooms were a different story all together, and if there was a way I could make this my home, I would. Every bedroom overlooks the expansive rift valley and sitting on the deck every evening as you take a hot cuppa or a glass of wine is the most therapeutic feeling one can experience. Waking up every morning to this view is just amazing. The home owners of Olohore Onyore must have given great thought to the building of this holiday home, and it is clear the inspiration behind this breathtaking development was the amazing views and rustic feel of nature. With an open plan design, Olohore Onyore is a modern house yet has a rustic feel. The choice of colour, artefacts, rugs and furniture blends superbly giving the house
a unique feel and look. I learnt that majority of the decor pieces are collected by the owners from their travel around the world. The home features 3 elegant en suite bedrooms all of which have wide glass doors that face the serene landscape providing a blissful view of the sunrise and sunset. It also has a fully furnished kitchen where you can make your meals should you choose to. The living room, which has an elegant and understated look has pure white walls which add aesthetic value to

We spent most of the weekend cooking, eating, bird watching and the more adventurous ones even went hiking the panoramic valley. Green Energy Solutions
ts s o c t u c , y g r e n e e v a S
Come every month end, you dread looking at your electricity bill because the costs are so high. As you dip into your pocket to pay the month’s bill, you make a promise to look for another option that will save you money and heartache. Well, as the cost of living goes up every day, energy should be the least of your worries. Thanks to the eco-friendly solar solutions, your home will stay lit always and your pocket will stay smiling. With the world going green in every aspect, our government has done service to manufacturers by wavering income tax on importation of raw materials. This in essence has enabled manufacturers provide home development solutions at an affordable rate. As people today are looking for ways to better their lives, solar energy is a popular choice but usually not an option for many. As dinner table conversations around the world lean more towards climate change, the scarce natural resources, the rising cost of living and green awareness, more and more people are trying to make their living environments more mother nature friendly. Electricity has become a most important necessity in today’s world, and as much as it is a necessary evil considering its rising cost, there is a lot we can do to save energy, make our lives healthier and see less of high electricity bills every end month. A solution that’s gaining a lot of popularity is solar energy and as the world strives to go green in every area, the sun has become the only environment friendly solution to provision of energy. It is one thing to say and the other to act, thus in order to cut on electricity bills, it is important to take action, and today there are very many affordable options when looking to start using solar energy in the homes, offices and hotels.
56 | HOMES KENYA Issue 67
Everyone wants to cut costs, and when you compare the amount paid monthly to power companies with the one time investment to build solar panels in your living or working environment, the amount is so minimal that you will wonder why you didn’t come up with the idea sooner.
One of the questions every home owner will ask is why do I need solar energy? One may want it for water heating, electrical use, lighting or general home use, but all this reasons all underlie three major factors, i.e., environmental benefits, save costs and energy independence. Solar energy is the cleanest source of energy that is also sustainable. Furthermore, it doesn’t produce the harmful pollutants that are majorly responsible for global warming. When considering solar energy for an already existing building, it is important to consider the orientation of the building, as you have to install the panels at an angle to the sun, which will be the sole source of energy. Secondly, make sure your home is as energy efficient as possible, use energy efficient bulbs and make sure the roofs are properly insulated. This is important for either solar electricity or solar thermal energy in the case of water heating.
What there not to love about solar energy? It is free, clean, and readily available. Over the pat few years, solar energy has become affordable mainly because people
are now more aware of their environment. If one chooses to harness solar at home, there are two main types of systems, i.e, “grid-tie” system and the “off-grid” or stand-alone system. The “grid-tie” is connected to the local power grid and is used in urban centers while the off grid is independent and is installed in remote areas where electricity is not sufficient. Your solar provider will guide you on the best system to install based on your needs and location. Installing a solar system can be an expensive undertaking especially when one doesn’t have enough knowledge. One way to reduce this expense is to reduce electricity use prior to installation. As mentioned earlier, replace bulbs with fluorescent and energy saving bulbs and replace old appliances that use a lot of energy. If the cost of a full house solar system seems daunting, a good option to start with can be heating your water with the power of the sun. Water heaters use up the most power in the home and solar water heating can save a Kenyan family up to 60% of power cost.
So, has your electricity bill been giving you sleepless nights? Have you been thinking about other solutions to curb the rising cost of electricity? Do you want to say goodbye to hefty power bills? Well, say hello to solar energy and harness the power of the sun while getting the satisfaction of doing a good deed for Mother Nature.
