Photo, Jake Martella

Managing Editor of HOMES magazine starting back in 2007. In 2010, my life changed. I’m sure many of you can relate to a pivotal time when circumstances caused you to suddenly veer off course – in an entirely different direction from where you thought you were headed. There aren’t any guarantees as we navigate our existence on this planet. Through loss, divorce and any number of crucial events, we can find ourselves treading water and desperately trying to stay afloat. The good news is that major changes often lead us to adjust our perspectives and to start again – often a little bit wiser, a whole lot smarter and ready for just about anything. It was Katherine Moore, the previous editor, who initially brought me on board with HOMES Publishing Group some 10 years ago. Along with the art director, JoAnn McHardy, they have revitalized ACTIVE LIFE. I can’t thank Katherine enough for her generosity and guidance, and wish her only the best as she embarks upon her next life chapter. Over the years, I continued to contribute to all of our publications on a freelance basis, but now I’m in a role that fits me to a T. I’m the target audience of ACTIVE LIFE, along with the rest of you; therefore, I have a vested interest in the content. From the soles of your feet to the sunglasses on your head, we have you covered in our Body & Soul section. Plus, you’ll learn how to pack the perfect suitcase for your next trip, and we’ll also give you some travel ideas as to where you might want to go. We’ve secured some wonderful contributors for our enhanced ACTIVE HOME section, including Jane Lockhart, Tomas Pearce and our own RENO & DECOR editorial director, Cobi Ladner, because, ultimately, homes are what we’re all about – and after being away, it’s always good to be back home.

TO MOVE

Or not to move?

T

his is the question that many Canadian seniors will eventually have to ask themselves, and often the answer is that they do not want to move out of their long-term home. A recent study* indicated that a higher percentage of Canadians over the age of 55 said that they would prefer to renovate and retrofit their current home rather than move to a new one. It found that 47 per cent of pre-retired and 56 per cent of retired respondents stated, ‘staying in my home is critical for my quality of life.’ It can be difficult to let go of a place where you have a lifetime of memories and, most likely, raised your children. However, if seniors don’t opt to downsize, they will face higher costs.

Most homes need updating

Of the group that was questioned, 58 per cent said that in order for them to remain in their home they would have to make improvements. The two rooms that would need to be upgraded for better accessibility would be the bathroom and the kitchen, and these are the two rooms that are the most expensive to renovate. My parents are currently renovating their bathroom, and so far their cost is upwards of $20,000. Of the respondents, 11 per cent said that their homes would need major renovations in order for them to continue to live in it during their retirement.

Finding the money

A good chunk of the money that’s been saved during your working years, can easily be gobbled up if you choose to retrofit your home. It’s important to consider where the money will come from for home improvements, and how that will impact your long term retirement goals. For those who plan to stay in their current home, 62 per cent will have to access their savings for renovations. The biggest concern, is that some people are willing to go into debt in order to stay put.

14

P14finance.indd 14

ACTIVE LIFE

Approximately 25 per cent said that they would consider a reverse mortgage product or they would draw on their home equity line of credit. A smaller 7 per cent said that they would use other types of loans for the renovations. Carrying any kind of debt at this time of life can impede your ability to travel, start new hobbies, entertain friends and enjoy your retirement.

One level living

One of the major reasons that seniors choose to move is that they want a living environment on one level. The cost of recreating a singlelevel floorplan, or simplifying the access to the second floor, can be very expensive. AGTA Home Health Care is a company that provides products and services for barrier-free living. They estimate that the cost to improve accessibility from the main floor to the second floor, via a stair glide, starts at around $3,000. The cost to improve access with a ramp from the outside to the inside of the home also starts at around $3,000. And, of course, as my parents have experienced, the cost of creating a full bathroom on the main level is (conservatively) upwards of $10,000.

BY RUBINA AHMED-HAQ

A good chunk of the money that’s been saved during your working years, can easily be gobbled up if you choose to retrofit your home.

For emotional and sentimental reasons, it’s easy to understand why many would want to stay in their long-term home. I’ve been encouraging my own parents for close to a decade to downsize, and so far I haven’t had any luck. Take the time to carefully weigh the costs if you decide to stay in your existing home. By moving to a smaller, more economical home, you can free up previously inaccessible wealth to support a more care-free and enjoyable lifestyle. n *The Retirement Study of Canadians aged 55+ was conducted by HomEquity Bank and the Brondesbury Group. Methodology: A sample of 301 Canadian homeowners aged 55+ was interviewed online via the Ipsos i-Say panel. In this case, the poll is accurate to within +/- 6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

As finance editor for HOMES Publishing Group, Rubina Ahmed-Haq also shares her expertise in our sister publication Condo Life. In addition, she is a regular contributor on CBC Radio, blogger at RateSupermarket.ca and has her own website alwayssavemoney.ca active-life.ca

[COVER STORY]

Singer, songwriter, poet, activist and Canadian Music Hall of Famer, Bruce Cockburn has shared concert stages all over the world with the likes of the iconic Jimi Hendrix and British rock super group Cream. ‘folker’ and a ‘rocker,’ Cockburn studied music at Boston’s Berklee School of Music. He began his musical career in the late 1960s, singing and playing guitar in Ottawa-based bands, ‘The Children’ (1966), and ‘The Esquires’ (1967), before heading to Toronto to form ‘The Flying Circus’ (later known as ‘Olivus’). In 1969, Cockburn struck out on the solo career that would bring him the affirmation and approval from a world, in which he says, he felt like a stranger in a strange place. Cockburn’s Canadian star was launched after playing at the Mariposa Folk Festival in 1967, and then headlining the festival in 1969. It would be another ten years before Cockburn’s international star shot through the stratosphere south of the border with the release of ‘Dancing in the Dragon’s Jaws,’ featuring the hit single “Wondering Where the Lions Are,” a song that reached No. 21 on the Billboard Hot 100. It was a time of accelerating fame for Cockburn, but one that was not without its difficulties. “I felt very much like an outsider,” Cockburn says of that time.

“It had to do with being cut off from my feelings. My family got along fine but we weren’t close emotionally. I had trouble getting my feelings out, a lot of it around relationships. I really didn’t understand anything about anything.” It was with some irony that Cockburn read a reporter’s review in the 1970s that said, ‘Cockburn presents soft music and is soft-spoken, but there is a seething undercurrent of rage.’ The singer found this very perceptive and interesting, considering that he wove together such hope-inspired lyrics as: Behind the pain/fear Etched on the faces Something is shining Like gold but better Rumours of glory - Rumours of Glory, 1980 Also in the 1970s, Cockburn’s sense of social engagement began to evolve with the discovery of his Native peers in Western Canada. He lent his voice to a number of causes including the refugee plight in Central America and the Haida peoples’ struggles around land claims in British Columbia. Living in the States during the years that the Vietnam War was full-blown, also had an effect on the singer. “It’s hard to write about the world and one’s place in it without making social commentary,” Cockburn says. Seismic changes in Cockburn’s life over the past decades have been transformative in terms of his physical space, his emotional space and his approach-to-life space. “If you would have asked me a dozen years ago if I was going to be a dad again, living in San Francisco, I would have laughed. Yet here I am! At times, it can be utterly exhausting,” Cockburn says. “When I was a parent in my 30s, I don’t think I was as good at it. I felt more protective of my time; I was self-involved and focused on my art. My daughter, Iona, who is four, has a much more central place in my day-to-day than my older daughter Jenny (40), did. But it all came out ok in the end.” Iona loves going on tour with her Dad, and insists that music is always playing in the car. “I am, to a great extent, the translator of the world for her,” Cockburn

says. “It is a fun and very interesting role. Having Iona in my life is a constant source of amazing stuff.” Cockburn has a real sense of connection to the Divine, but relies less on a traditional relationship with religion, and more on a moment-to-moment relationship with God. “I try to feel the presence of the Divine and be steered by that,” Cockburn says. “I have to listen and be open to that little voice that wells up, and not have my mind cluttered with other distracting voices. It is a continual work in progress.” Cockburn now expends a lot of the energy, previously spent on song writing, on his full of life four-year-old. He is satisfied in the knowledge that he has had a sufficient amount of success, and doesn’t have to worry about taking a step back. “I care very much about performing and writing new songs,” Cockburn says, “but I no longer have to think about establishing a presence. However, I don’t take it for granted; it could go away.”

Photography, (this page) Daniel Keebler

Cockburn misses the desert, huge skies and uncluttered landscapes, but having extra time to spend in nature’s wide open spaces isn’t on his current agenda. So, to keep himself in good shape and energized, Cockburn works with a trainer and goes to the gym a couple of times a week. At one time he was a committed student of yoga, but with his travel and touring schedule he has given it up. “My health is good and I try to stay active. Being on tour is not an especially healthy lifestyle, and because of Iona I only go away for three weeks max at a time.” Music is Cockburn’s anchor – his songs a trail of life, change and growth. For his fans, its been a gift that has evolved over his 31 albums, and decades of writing, singing and performing. “It is hard to come up with new stuff, an idea that I haven’t already dealt with in some other song, although my new songs lean more to the spiritual than the political,” Cockburn says. Life’s rewards include his relatively new family, his older daughter Jenny, his grandchildren and his beloved wife M.J. (Mary Josephine). Cockburn also cites the ‘illusion of wisdom’ from all that he has been through these past seven decades as a gift. “We don’t get smarter as we get older but we know more,” Cockburn says with a wry

laugh. “A part of that wisdom is not getting stressed in the same way we did when we were younger. I can pick my (worry) targets better and I am less judgemental of people.” In addition to his song writing talents, Cockburn is the author of his 2014 memoir, Rumours of Glory (HarperCollins). He spent three years writing the book, often pulling all-nighters as he parented his new baby daughter. The memoir takes the reader up to 2004; however, in the span of the last 14 years, significant developments have occurred in Cockburn’s life, including receiving the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal in 2012. Cockburn is undecided if he’ll write the second part of his life story. “If I live long enough to forget how hard the first book was, there might be room for a part two,” Cockburn says with a laugh. “If arthritis gets the better of my hands, if I stop being able to remember lyrics, I could see writing another book. That’s a ways off, I hope.” In the interim, Cockburn hopes to release a new album in 2016. “Whenever I think of retirement I think of B. B. King and John Lee Hooker – all these old Blues guys who go ‘til they drop – if I’m able, that’s exactly what I’ll do. I will just keep going, cuz that’s what I do.” n ACTIVE LIFE

It’s Summertime – let your spirits soar RECENTLY I WATCHED an interview with Jane

NOW OFFERING BELKYRA

Fonda – a fascinating person who is very active at the age of 78. When the discussion turned to aging, Fonda said that no matter how active she stays, she can’t stop her body from ‘going south’ (she’s had a knee and hip replacement, amongst other conditions). In contrast, she finds that the older she gets, her spirit is continually rising. So I say to you, while you keep active this summer, may your spirits soar. Our spirits are soaring at ACTIVE LIFE with the addition of Catherine Daley, our new editor. Welcome Cat. You are a pleasure to work with. Enjoy reading the July/August issue of Body & Soul, offering inspirational tips and techniques for an enjoyable summer. Find out what’s trending in sunglasses in our Style File, then flip to the article on ‘Foot Care: The soles of a lifetime.’ For an outdoor fitness idea, ‘Tai chi: The Body & Soul of Fitness’ will fill you in on an ancient Chinese tradition that will not only help to strengthen your body, but also your mind. A must-read is our House Calls’ article on ‘Spider and Varicose Veins’ – an ailment that is the bane of swimsuit season for many women. Dr. Sam Hanna, our resident Dermatologist, talks about prevention and treatment. Before you head into the travel section of ACTIVE LIFE, be sure to sharpen your packing skills with Innovative Living’s ‘Packing the Perfect Suitcase.’ Congratulations Lola Greczylo, from Toronto, for winning ACTIVE LIFE’S March/April Body & Soul Contest. Lola won a Gift Certificate for a pair of Bueno Shoes.

SHADES of Summer WHAT’S TRENDING IN SUNGLASSES Few accessories are as diverse and globally accepted, by men and women of all ages, than sunglasses. Functional, yet oh-so trendy, a new pair can help to reset anyone’s slowed-down fashion clock.

T

CIRCUS BY SAM EDELMAN

his summer’s sunglass trends encompass sizes and styles that flatter various face shapes. Currently trending are recycled styles from the 60s and 70s, fashionable styles that never went out of style, and new bigger and bolder styles – all with a focus on comfort and suitability. You can’t have just one pair of sunglasses. You’ll need at least several pair in order to suit your mood, clarify your image and up your fashion sense. Just make sure that the lenses have UV (ultraviolet) protection.

AVIATORS This popular style has been in and out of fashion since the early 70s, and made a classic comeback in 2014. Archetypal aviators include smoky lenses and spring hinges. For a more updated look, try a pair with coloured frames. WAYFARER This model features thick sunglass arms that are attached to the top of the frame and often come in a solid shade. A modern twist might incorporate arms in one colour (perhaps neon), and frames in a different colour (often black).

ULTRAVIOLET (UV) PROTECTION ◆ Ultraviolet radiation from the sun can damage the skin of the eyelids along with parts of the eye such as the cornea and lens (mayoclinic. org). When purchasing sunglasses look for a pair that block 99 to 100 per cent of UVA and UVB rays, and screen out 75 to 90 per cent of visible light. ◆ If you are active and outdoors for long periods of time, consider sunglasses that wraparound, or are close-fitting with wide lenses so that your eyes are protected from the sun from all angles. ◆ For better outdoor protection, wear sunglasses even if you are wearing contact lenses that have UV protection.

OVERSIZED EYEWEAR Smaller sunglasses are a thing of the past. Chic, oversized ‘Jackie O’ versions are back with a vengeance. FUNKY SHAPES From rounded frames with funky rims, to square frames with ombre lenses, as well as octagonal and bear-ear shapes, you’ll need to try them on to find the silhouette that enhances your profile. BOLD AND BEAUTIFUL Neon, peach, marble, red, leopard, pastel pink, tortoise shell or just plain black – there’s a colour to suit every outfit and occasion, as well as your frame-of-mind. DARKER SHADES Ombre/multiple-hue lenses are often darker at the top and gradually lighten at the bottom. CREATIVE INNOVATIONS Triangular, squared, rounded, studded, glittered – and the list goes on and on. Gals and guys just wanna have fun. n active-life.ca

Foot Care The soles of a lifetime BY ANDREA NATHANSON

F

PREVENTABLE MEASURES Most foot problems are preventable and can be treated without surgical intervention. Purchasing the correct footwear is one of the most obvious measures, but often choices are based on looks and design, instead of comfort and correctness. Ensure that orthotics are fitted properly and are adjusted periodically if there are changes to your feet. On injured areas of your feet, low-dose laser treatments may be an option to help promote healing on a cellular level, thus reducing pain and inflammation. Ultimately, walking is the best exercise. If you sit a lot, Costula suggests that writing the alphabet in upper and then in lower case, is an effective exercise that you can do with your feet – anytime and anywhere.

26

ACTIVE LIFE

“ We may have many INGROWN TOENAILS Costula says that ingrown nail development may be an issue for infants as a result of wearing onepiece sleepers. She suggests that the baby’s nails are being forced forward into the end of the onesie, which may cause the nail to develop as an ingrown. To be on the safe side, cut the feet off of the sleeper, and put on a pair of loose-fitting socks. Developed in Scotland in the early 1900s by Ross Fraser, nail bracing was developed to treat painful ingrown toenails. The non-invasive braces are custom made and applied to the toenail in order to stabilize it, allowing it to re-grow in proper alignment while it goes through one full growth cycle (12-18 months). Nail bracing is ideal for people with foot problems resulting from military and sports activities.

pairs of shoes throughout our life, but we only have one pair of feet.”

Interesting feet facts ◆

It is rare that both feet on any given person are exactly the same size.

The skin on the soles of the feet is thicker than anywhere else on the body.

There are 25,000 sweat glands in a pair of feet, and they can produce up to a half pint of moisture per day.

One-quarter of the bones in the human body are in the feet.

A human foot and ankle contain 26 bones, 33 joints, and more than 100 muscles, tendons and ligaments.

The average person takes 8,000 to 10,000 steps per day, which adds up to about 115,000 miles over a lifetime – more than four times around the world. n

eet are the foundation to the rest of your body; however, few people carefully inspect their feet (especially the soles), nor do they nurture them and keep them fit. It’s important to be proactive when it comes to foot care hygiene and exercising your feet. Costula Ladas, a chiropodist and foot care specialist from Ladas Foot Clinic (ladasfootclinic.ca), estimates that 75 per cent of people will experience foot problems, including corns, callouses, bunions, ingrown toenails and fungal infections of the feet, over the course of their life. Women are four times more likely to experience associated problems, and some issues may be traced back to the wearing of high heels.

Tai Chi I

first encountered Tai chi in the early nineties, prior to it becoming popular in Canada. While on my way to what I anticipated to be a very stressful meeting, I noticed a group of people in a park slowly moving their arms and bodies in unison. I was fascinated by the gentle, rhythmic motion, and stood watching for a few minutes. By the time I continued on my way, I remember feeling more peaceful. It wasn’t until later that I found out that it was Tai chi. Tai chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that was originally developed for self-defence. Today it is practiced as a graceful form of exercise that helps to strengthen the body and counteract stress. Performed through a series of slow, flowing movements that are aligned with deep breathing, each movement flows, without pause, into the next, ensuring that the body is in constant motion. These exercises are so gentle, putting minimal stress on muscles and joints, that they are safe to do at any age and fitness level. Note: It is always advisable to consult a health care professional before doing any form of exercise, especially if experiencing joint problems, back pain, severe osteoporosis, fractures, a hernia, or if you are pregnant.

Styles to choose from

There are many different styles of Tai Chi, each emphasizing various methods and principles. Some styles concentrate on health preservation, while others focus on martial arts. Classical Tai chi (classicaltaichi. com) centres on health benefits, along with a component of martial arts. This style enables one to start movement from the internal core of the body (abdomen and back), rather than the external parts of the body (limbs). The idea is to develop as much dexterity in the torso as in the hands and feet. This follows a ‘bottom up’ approach to movement, which plays an important part in influencing the mental state of the person doing the exercise. To perform internal movements, one must focus intensely inward, in order to communicate with the nervous system in the torso. Taoist Tai chi (taoist.org) is a comprehensive mix of Chinese martial arts for the whole body – cultivating body, heart and mind. This follows the concept that the body and mind cannot be separated. When the physical body is healthy and strong, and the mind quiet, the transformation of internal energies can occur. The turning

Tai chi is inexpensive, as it does not require special equipment. It can be performed anywhere, (indoors or out), alone or in a group. It helps to improve: ◆ Levels of stress, anxiety and depression ◆

and stretching in each movement contributes to better balance and posture, increased strength and flexibility, as well as calmness and peace of mind.

Getting Started

• Visit websites listed in this article and watch online videos such as TaichiForseniorsVideo.com • Get acquainted with the various styles. • Talk to people who participate • Join a Tai chi class in your community – if you enjoy it, enroll in long-term classes. • Try to practice the movements at the same time everyday in order to develop a routine, and experience the tranquility that Tai chi can offer you. n

HOUSE CALLS – WHERE EXPERTS ANSWER QUESTIONS ON BEAUTY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

In this issue, Dr. Sam Hanna, FAAD, DABD, Cosmetic Dermatologist and Director of Dermatology ON BLOOR (dermonbloor.com), discusses…

Spider and Varicose Veins

Q

I always dread wearing dresses and bathing suits in the summer as I have varicose/ spider veins that seem to be getting progressively worse now that I am in my early 50s (both my mother and grandmother had them). My doctor suggests that I have the veins treated. How is the treatment done, and is it painful?

A

You are not alone! The great weather of summer is here, along with the outdoor fun that goes with it. For many, however, this wonderful time of year comes with anxiety about how to hide, or to minimize, the appearance of spider veins and varicose veins.

Spider Veins | These veins are red and blue

threadlike blood vessels that can occur as single fine lines or branching clusters on the legs. They occur over time in some individuals who are predisposed due to the effects of gravity and activity. Pressure in deep leg veins leads to the formation of these harmless, but bothersome, visible overflow channels in the skin.

Varicose Veins | Wider, blue-green reticular vessels are visually apparent. At the extreme; thick, bulging vessels, called varicose veins, can form and sometimes they are associated with significant aching in the legs.

An Ounce of Prevention | As with most things,

prevention is often best. So, if you see that mom and grandma have leg veins, and you’re worried that you might get them too, there are some tips to help. Whenever possible, elevate your legs when sitting. If you do a job where you sit for long periods, get up and walk around every once in a while. Even better, if you sit or stand for long work periods, consider wearing support stockings on a daily basis for as much of the year as is possible. Stockings in the 20-30mm Hg range should help.

TREATMENTS If the veins have already started to form, various treatments can help. 1 For spider and smaller reticular veins, a treatment called sclerotherapy can be very helpful. In this treatment, a tiny needle is used to introduce a solution into these very superficial veins that causes them to collapse. Your body then dissolves what’s left of the veins over time. The treatment feels like tiny, gentle pinpricks. Some people may experience mild itching that can last for a few minutes or hours. Afterwards, some discoloration along the course of where the veins used to be can occur. This usually lasts for two to six weeks. Multiple treatments are often necessary, especially if there are many spider veins.

2 Larger veins, and very fine, nearly invisible veins called mats, may be better managed with lasers rather than with injections. The pulsed-dye laser and long-pulsed Nd:YAG laser are among the treatments that dermatologists can use to help with this specific situation. Many types of veins are often present at once, which may require multiple, and different treatments at the same time.

3 When the veins are bigger than 5-7 millimetres, and are bulging or painful, I’ll often send my patients to see a vascular surgery colleague who will assess the deep vein system with ultrasound to see if a technique called EVLT (endovenous laser therapy), or surgery might be necessary.

Your dermatologist will be happy to advise you on how best to manage this annoying problem. n

TALK, LISTEN, CONNECT Volunteer English-speaking programs in Spain

I

t’s not in my DNA to waste a perfectly good travel voucher – especially one that’s in American dollars. Due to a missed connection and an unfortunate chain of events on a flight a few years ago, I was offered a credit. I’d forgot about it, until I received an email advising me of the looming expiry date. What to do? What to do? Eight years ago I added volunteering with Vaughan Systems to my

34

P34-35spain.indd 34

ACTIVE LIFE

bucket list. I’d previously registered for the program, but due to lack of time, finances, yadda, yadda, yadda, the opportunity to just pick up and go hadn’t presented itself. On a whim, I picked up the phone and called the Vaughan head office in Madrid to see if they required an Anglo for an upcoming workshop – and I was in. To give you a bit of a background; a Texan named Richard Vaughan

J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 1 6

developed an English teaching system in 1977 that revolutionized language training in Spain. Today, it’s one of the largest providers of language programs for Spanish business executives. With six immersion centres, they host more than 4,000 professional Spaniards per year. The Vaughan Town Project was launched in 2001. Vaughan had already established that a 30-minute conversation with a native Englishspeaker was just as effective as spending a full day in an Englishspeaking country. This type of immersion into any foreign language

helps to achieve listening comprehension, as well as verbal expression. I signed up for the six-day program, and met up with fellow Anglos at a tapas reception in Madrid on the Saturday evening prior to our departure. The wine was flowing and we quickly established our countries of origin. I was the only Canadian in this group of 15, with a good mix of male and female volunteers from Britain, Scotland and the U.S., plus one lovely gentleman from Australia whose age hovered around the eight-decade mark. Frank had signed up for a second volunteer program at a different resort following our week together, and then was going to walk the Camino. At 8:45 on Sunday morning I boarded a bus for a three-hour journey to Puerta de Gredos – an 18th century resort with views of the Sierra de Gredos mountain range in central Spain. We had been instructed the night before to sit with a fellow Spaniard. I approached the first person I saw, sat down with my new

bus mate, and we talked non-stop. While Pilar’s (pronounced Peelar) English was somewhat hesitant at times as she searched for the right word or expression, there was no language barrier between two mothers who had daughters of the same age. We talked about family, customs, shared interests, and by the time we got off the bus we had formed an intimate bond. I can give you the breakdown of our days, but it’s difficult to explain the ease in which everyone settled into a trustful and respectful union. I’ve been to many classes, workshops and retreats in my lifetime, and I have to admit that I’m not always comfortable in an overly structured environment. I thought I might find the days too long, and yearn to get out on my own and explore. While the Vaughan facilitators scheduled our days to meet the requirements of the program, there was a relaxed simplicity to all that we did, and it was thoroughly enjoyable.

We received a wake-up call at 8:15. Breakfast was at 9 a.m., followed by four one-hour, one-on-one conversations. At this time, we could go for a walk, play a game, or relax and have coffee – as long as we were talking. At all meals we also alternated with Anglos and Spaniards at each table, and the conversations kept on going. Lunch at 2 p.m. was followed by a siesta (or free time) until 5 p.m., after which we started another four hours of one-hour sessions. Dinner was at 9 p.m. Some participants retired to the lounge after dinner for more social interaction, while others retired to their luxurious room for some ‘me’ time. One-on-ones were interspersed with telephone sessions, conference calls, group activities, and at the end of the week each Spaniard did a five-minute presentation in English that we assisted them with. We all celebrated their success. Maria Jose from Madrid shared this sentiment in an email to all of us, “Last week we lived a dream, a really nice one. For a week we were a bunch of friends talking to each other, walking, joking, eating, singing, acting. We opened our hearts and we found out many wonderful things. The dream lasted six days.” As for the Anglos, we received a certificate acknowledging our participation and the fact that we talked for a total of 80 hours in those six short days. Emma from the UK wrote, “It’s a few days in which you give a great deal, but you take away even more.” n For more information visit volunteers.grupovaughan.com

The rapid growth of golf also reflects Panama’s status as one of the fastest growing economies in the world. With more than 100 international banks headquartered in Panama City, business executives are always looking for quality courses to impress their clients. As a result,

top course architects, including Jack Nicklaus and Tom Fazio, are being brought in to design new courses and revamp older layouts. In 2016, Panama will be opening an expanded portion of the canal, which will be able to accommodate ships carrying more than 15,000 containers, in comparison to the current 6,500container limit. This will undoubtedly grow the economy even stronger, and attract more investors – many of whom love to play golf.

[ACTIVE TRAVEL] My introduction to Panamanian golf was at one of the country’s original courses. Steeped in history, Club de Golf de Panama opened in 1918 and costs US$125 to play, if you’re lucky enough to be invited for a game by a current member. My next stop was Santa Maria Golf and Country Club, located halfway between Panama City and Tocumen International Airport. Santa Maria is one of the country’s newest courses and will feature deluxe homes and condos joined by a luxury hotel. Breathtaking views of Panama City are possible from almost every tee, and the conditioning on this Floridastyle course sets it apart from other courses in this sun-drenched country that sees little rain along its Pacific coast during the winter months.
Tucán Country Club and Resort is located on the west bank of the Panama Canal, and has been completely upgraded to meet the challenges of modern golfers. Elevated tees on many of the holes at Tucán offer memorable views during a round. An upscale housing development anchors this course. At the Summit Golf Club and Resort, the Radisson Hotel is perched high on a cliff and offers stunning views of the course, the city, canal and surrounding wilderness. “Is that a wild boar?” I asked my cart mate as we approached the third hole at Summit. “I think it’s a large guinea pig,” said my partner, who also pointed out an alligator basking in the late-day sun at a nearby hole. Wild cats and

monkeys also lurk in the thick forest surrounding the property. A two-hour drive from Panama City brought me to the Royal Decameron Hotel — an all-inclusive Pacific coast beach resort favoured by Canadians. The Mantaraya Golf Club is one of the most pleasurable of all Panamanian courses to play. Mantaraya will test every part of your game. If you fail, you can always drown your sorrows with rum cocktails on the white sandy beach at Royal Decameron. After a few days on some of Panama’s golfer-friendly courses, it was time to put my game to the ultimate test on the Jack Nicklausdesigned Buenaventura Golf Club next to the JW Marriott Resort in Rio Hato. The Troon Golf-managed course is first class in every way. At approximately US$200 per round, it’s the most expensive course in Panama,

but worth every cent if you are a scratch handicap who can handle the wind. I tried a few other courses during my week-long tour of Panama, including the Sheraton Bijao Beach Club and Resort in Santa Clara, which is a nine-hole beauty. The Tom Fazio-designed Bluebay Coronado course is a tough track where winds off the ocean will inflate your score. The course is routed around some very impressive condos, vacation apartments and a luxury hotel. My Panama golf tour came to an end with a visit to Vista Mar, one of the most visually stunning layouts in Latin America. This American-style course, designed by Michael Poellot, is the crown jewel of the Vista Mar Resort complex, where fashionable homes overlook an upscale marina. Canada Proud! Gravenhurst, the ‘gateway to Muskoka,’ is an excellent starting point for your Muskoka tour. Sitting at the fork of the Muskoka River, the area boasts 22 spectacular waterfalls, granite sculptures designed by Mother Nature, fragrant pine forests, and picturesque small town charm. Drop in for a visit to the Bethune Memorial House National Historic Site, in Gravenhurst, and learn more about Canada’s own international hero, Norman Bethune, medical pioneer, iconic Chinese hero, and one of Canada’s original health care advocates. Cultural Experiences The Gravenhurst Opera House showcases excellent, and affordable, live theatre (shows run until September 30th), as well as a variety of music concerts. Further north, The Algonquin Theatre in Huntsville serves up live theatre, comedy and puppet shows, as well as folk, blues, fiddlers and jazz artists. Muskoka is home to some distinctive and intimate music venues. Peter’s Players in Gravenhurst features notable musical icons, (think Johnny Winter, James Cotton), in a 100-seat home theatre setting that was once an auto garage. Gravenhurst also features Music on the Barge, Sunday evenings in July and August, with the Good Brothers as the traditional summer finale. Kee to Bala, a summer concert tradition since 1942, is a lively mix of musical genres, from good old rock ‘n roll to country throw-downs. Golfing Muskoka, which hosts six of the top golf courses in Canada as voted by ScoreGolf Top 100, is a hole-in-one destination for golf enthusiasts. Must-

plays in the area include Deerhurst Resort, Taboo Muskoka, Rocky Crest Golf Resort, Windermere House and Muskoka Bay Club, (Muskoka’s highest ranked golf course).

Festivals of Fun Held in Bracebridge on Saturday, July 30th is ‘Session Muskoka’ – a craft beer festival with live bands, including beer, spirits and wine instruction. The spirit of Chautauqua lives on with the Flavours of Muskoka Chautauqua, an ‘amazing grace’ sampling of Ontario’s wines and gourmet food.

The Chautauqua movement, popular in the United States in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, was an education-based program dedicated to furthering personal growth through learning, religion and the arts. At the original pop-up event, Chautauqua attendees were entertained and inspired by musicians, preachers, and teachers. In fact, in the early 1900s, Muskoka was considered Canada’s Literary Summer Capital.

Art Tours The many unique and eclectic art galleries throughout Muskoka offer an extensive and diverse collection of art treasures, from sculptures, to paintings to wood carvings. The Muskoka Autumn Studio Tour, a 37-year-old tradition, boasts a collection of Muskoka’s finest artists and craftspeople. From functional to expressive fine art, this is a must-do tour every fall, when Ontario’s foliage is in full technicolour splendour. n

Windermere House THE REBIRTH OF THE LADY OF THE LAKE

indermere House is well known as an archetypal landmark in Muskoka. Originally a haven for fisherman, today it’s the perfect leisure retreat for vacationers, weddings and corporate events. Windermere House has a reputation for timeless elegance – the perfect combination of historical charm and modern style. Each spring, summer and fall the ‘Lady of the Lake’ welcomes guests from all over the world. The Jeffery family purchased the resort in 2007. Renovations started straight away to enhance the sophisticated styling on the interior of the hotel, while maintaining the historical elegance of the resort. A complementary balance was established, and the doors reopened to guests in May of 2008. In 2010 Oliver & Bonacini became the official food service provider at Windermere House. Upholding the

resort’s classical refinement, Oliver & Bonacini serves up urban-inspired fine dining options at the Rosseau Grill, while casual dining can be enjoyed at the Windermere Pub & Patio. When one thinks of Muskoka, stunning northern scenery and relaxing environs come to mind. Windermere House captures both images, making it the perfect corporate work/play retreat on Lake Rosseau. Weddings are also a specialty of Windermere House. Coordinators are on staff to help plan, organize and implement your perfect event. Located just two-and-a-half hours north of Toronto, the grand Lady of the Lake is an historic landmark in the village of Windermere, as well as an exemplary tribute to an era gone by. Thanks to the Jeffery family, Windermere House has been restored for all to enjoy. n

Anniversary Celebrations Wrapped in close to two hundred years of history, Jackson’s Point (originally called Bourchier’s Point) was settled in 1818 when a land grant was awarded to William Bourchier, who, with the first settlers, established a sawmill and a gristmill on the Black River. A sister community to nearby Sutton, the two have co-joined to

mark the 125th (quasquicentennial) Anniversary of the Village of Sutton’s first Council throughout 2016. Both communities are part of Georgina Township. Beauty and the Bath BY JANE LOCKHART • PHOTOGRAPHY BY GILLIAN JACKSON

ven the most functional of spaces can be beautiful; it’s a matter of appropriate colour choices, careful material selection and unrelenting attention to detail. A beautiful space can change our mood, our behaviour and, especially, our attitude. And, yes, this concept of beauty can even be applied to the most essential space in any home – the bathroom. Once considered a taboo subject for polite discourse decades ago, today the master bathroom has come to symbolize organized mornings and calm relaxing nights. Used multiple times per day, often by

52

numerous people, bathrooms host a multitude of activities. So, it’s no wonder that they are often packed to the brim with everything from medicine to makeup that’s stored, and hidden, around the main fixtures. Perhaps its no surprise, then, that when it comes time to renovate, this is often the last room to be tackled. The bathroom needs significant time and attention to suss out all of the details, and it also needs an adequate budget in order to consider an extensive list of options. With busy business schedules and a growing family, clients Pat and Sherri’s master bathroom had seen

J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 1 6

better days and didn’t function at the level that they wanted it to. Now that their three grown children were, for the most part, out on their own, the time had come to completely retune this room to suit their current position in life, as well as their evolved sense of style. The shower was an essential element, so it was enlarged and moved to a back corner to allow for a full wall that could accommodate body jets and a steam shower. A mix of white glass tiles and Carrera marble line the shower for a crisp, watery feel. Sherri’s desire for a clean format, with the use of fresh active-life.ca

natural elements in whites, blues and pale greys influenced the overall aesthetic appeal. Previously, a drop-in tub had been mounted within a raised deck that pushed the windows higher. Getting in and out of the tub also proved to be difficult. By removing the whole structure, investing in new longer windows and selecting a sculptural freestanding tub, this area became the architectural focal point of the room. A beautiful, bright vista was created, framed by the new windows, which overlook a private yard and pool. The original single vanity was removed, and two separate vanity

areas were positioned across from one another. This provided a his and hers space to ensure that both Sheri and Pat had exactly what they required. Sheri’s vanity was extended with a lowered section to provide a makeup area. Both vanities have framed drawers and doors in a classical furniture style, and are well-scaled so as not to dominate the space. Side sconces and detailed centre mirrors help to balance the space.

As the master bathroom took shape, it became clear that the adjoining master bedroom needed some attention too. Following the same theme, a pale blue/grey was painted on the walls with a lighter tint of the same hue added to the room’s cathedral ceiling. An upholstered headboard, accented with mirrored side tables and wall-mounted sconces, created an elegant and tranquil space. Sherri’s collection of her own nature photography completed both rooms in a very personal way – and they are nothing short of beautiful. n

Pretty up

THE PORCH

BY COBI LADNER

Life is busy, and after awhile we stop seeing the spaces that we pass through on a regular basis. It’s easy to let the front porch become overrun with shoes, dog leashes, sports equipment and any number of household items that were most likely destined for somewhere else.

“Life’s simple pleasures are often the best.” – Cobi Ladner the homeowners are away, they are stored out of view in a lidded basket. A trio of vases coordinates with the colours in the pillows, and are ideal for holding cut stems, or simple leaves and branches as the garden changes throughout the summer – and they’re just as impressive when empty. With a little bit of planning and decoration, this ‘pass-through’ porch has now become a three-season living space and an extended part of the house. n

he front porch on this small city home was just such a ‘pass-through’ space. With a coat of paint and some carefully chosen accessories, it’s now been transformed in to a ‘sit down and have a cup of tea’ space. While the owner loved the idea of an all-white porch, she was realistic in her decision to choose an earthy grey colour for the floor so that it didn’t show dirt and tied in nicely with the brick mortar on the house. The rest of the porch was painted a crisp white to serve as a fresh backdrop for seasonal decorating. Seating is of the utmost importance, and the built-in bench is not only ideal for enjoying that cup of tea, but it also offers a place to sit when tying up shoes and a dry retreat during inclement weather. Once everything was painted, the real fun began. A round, white, tin table was chosen for ease of traffic flow, and served as the perfect perch for the owner’s choice of beverage. Instant decor was added with a mix of bright and cheery pillows along the bench. Because the porch is covered, the pillows didn’t need to be made out of outdoor fabric, and when

TRENDING DESIGNS

in Milan

BY TANIA RICHARDSON

For one week each year, the ‘who’s who’ of the interior design industry gathers in Milan to attend the world-renowned interior design show – Salone de Mobile. This show is where inspiration flows, new ideas are presented, and the design world, ultimately, dictates what is hot, and what is not – and this year was no exception. After walking approximately 100 kilometres during the week that I was there, I can share a few highlights of the latest and greatest design trends.

LEFT: Mirrors reflect chandelier and muted mauve bathroom from all angles. MIDDLE: Metallic backsplash paired with warm woods for an unexpected contrast. RIGHT: Structurally mounted, hand carved tub and sinks with rose gold faucets.

Technology | Each year we see an increase in technological designs for the home. This year we were privy to concept kitchens with cooktop elements that were fully integrated within a countertop slab – no visible cooktop. This is a great idea for small spaces. We also witnessed smart appliances that do the thinking for you, and ingenious storage solutions that move with the wave of a hand. Popular in fashion design, 3D printing has also emerged in home design, in order to create lightweight products that are durable and flexible. Over the next few years this trend will surge. If we can think it, it can be built. Colour | From soft furnishings, to kitchen appliances, bathtubs and vanities, colour was either soft and muted, or bright and bold. This year, hot colours in home design include lots of blush pinks, muted mauves and soft salmon hues. Shades of blue range from pale and airy,

56

P56pearce.indd 56

ACTIVE LIFE

to dark and sophisticated. Graphic black white is still popular, along with deep yellow, blue and green jewel tones.

Mixing metals | Silver may have to take a back seat to more fashionable metals like rose gold and brass. However, don’t be afraid to mix your existing chrome faucet with contrasting alloys. Mixed, or two-toned, metals were highly visible on hardware, furniture, lighting, kitchen and bath design. Fear not – mixing metals is definitely on trend. Design meets fashion | Designers

often turn to fashion for inspiration. Dolce and Gabbana collaborated with Smeg appliances, and their refrigerator designs were a showstopper. Each piece was hand-painted, and inspired by their latest fashion collection.

Geometric patterns | Floor and wall tiles pushed the geometric boundaries, and stunning LED light fixtures were shaped in graphic, geometric patterns. Bold, yet eye-pleasing, geometric patterns were also spotted on furniture and textiles. Organic opulence | Recognizing that technology continues to play a big role, we still noticed a strong, organic influence on the design scene. Inspired by natural patterns, materials and shapes, handmade ceramics, pottery, lighting and furniture had an artisan feel – complete with imperfections for exceptional, one-of-a kind design pieces. It’s a very exciting time in home decor and design. Salone is over for another year, but the creative inspiration that we experienced carries through to all that we do. n

LET THERE BE LIGHT Sun-Brite Drapery introduces affordable, remote-controlled shades

ith the varying architectural influences that are being incorporated into our homes and condominiums these days, we’re benefitting from an abundance of natural light through oversized windows. However, dressing these windows can be problematic. Not only do we want beautiful window treatments to augment our interior decor, but also concerns as it relates to privacy and minimizing direct sunlight need to be addressed, as well as the most obvious two considerations – cost and functionality. Coming up with affordable solutions to expansive window quandaries was proving to be difficult. To help with this design dilemma, Sun-Brite Drapery introduces two new wireless shade systems by Lutron. Custom-made shades and window treatments are always the answer, but they weren’t always factored in to the post-move budget. Lutron offers remote-controlled shades that are fully motorized and reasonably priced. Serena roller shades can be installed

[IN THE GARDEN Q&A]

Late Summer

LAWN CARE

T

he best time of year to thicken an established lawn, or to start a new one, is in late August or early September. The heavy dew in the evening, the cooler temperatures at night, and the regular rainfall of late summer and early autumn all combine to create the perfect conditions for grass seed germination, as well as the ‘puttingdown of roots’ of freshly laid sod.

Q: How useful is it to dig or pull weeds out of my lawn? A: A good weed puller can be useful, but if you do not over-seed right away you are just postponing a larger problem. The hole left in your lawn is an invitation for the remaining root to re-grow and other weeds to put down a new root. Spread lawn soil and fresh grass seed over the area. Q: How do I sow grass seed in an established lawn for best results? A: Spread a two-centimetre (oneinch) layer of triple mix (1/3 top soil, 1/3 peat, 1/3 compost), or lawn soil over the area where the weeds are the thickest. Spread quality grass seed

62

P62cullen.indd 62

ACTIVE LIFE

will provide the elements that your lawn craves the most. Look for a lawn fertilizer with slow release nitrogen and chelated iron for the best results. Note: The most important time of year to apply lawn fertilizer is in the late fall, just before, or after, Halloween.

over the area at the rate of 1/2 kilo per 40 square metres (one pound per 400 square feet). I spread the seed by hand, but you may opt for a handheld whirly gig. Make sure that you spread the seed as evenly as possible and incorporate the seed with the triple mix by raking it in lightly, and then by stepping on it with flat-soled shoes to achieve firm contact. Use only the best quality grass seed, as it will dictate the pedigree of your future lawn. Q: Is this a good time of year to fertilize my lawn? A: If you have not fertilized your lawn since spring (within the last two months), now is an excellent time of year to do it. However, fertilizer is not a substitute for good quality soil, but a quality brand like Golfgreen Iron Plus, So Green or Green Earth

J U LY / A U G U S T 2 0 1 6

Q: How often should I water my lawn? A: If we enter a period without substantial rain (over a centimetre) for more than week and with no rain in the forecast, I recommend that you apply water from a quality lawn sprinkler once a week only. Leave your sprinkler on for two to three hours to allow the water to sink deeply into the root zone. A daily sprinkling doesn’t accomplish anything, and encourages shallow roots that are not drought tolerant. Q: How should I cut my lawn? A: Cut it high (at least six to seven centimetres) and use a mulching mower. The taller the grass blades, the deeper and more droughttolerant the roots will be. The mulching attachment on your mower returns the natural ingredients that are in the raw grass clippings back to the root zone of your lawn, where they will break down, supply nutrition and provide an insulating layer to protect against the drying effects of the sun. n Mark Cullen is an expert gardener, author and broadcaster. Photo, (lawn) bigstockphoto.com

Q: How do I control Creeping Charlie, plantain, dandelions, and the like, in my lawn without the use of chemicals? A: Think of lawn weeds as competitors with your grass. If you give them the space to put down a root in your lawn, they will take the opportunity to thrive and multiply. Compete them out of existence by spreading fresh grass seed over the weed infested area, and cut your lawn six to eight centimetres high.

HEDGE ROAD LANDING Active living close to the lake

O

ntario’s very first ‘cottage country’ offers a memorable feast for the senses. Drive along Hedge Road in Jackson’s Point, one of the prettiest stretches in Ontario, and drink in breathtaking views of lush greenery, charming cottages, historic homes, exclusive estates and glorious glimpses of Lake Simcoe between pristine cedars. Now, imagine living in a new home in these gorgeous surroundings. The opportunity to live at Hedge Road Landing awaits – Alliance Homes’ active adult lifestyle community of condominium cottage-style bungalow homes on the south shores of the lake. Location is paramount at this sought-after address. Hedge Road is a favourite among cyclists and pedestrians due to its beauty and tranquility. Numerous waterfront parks provide lovely spots for picnicking and outdoor activities. This idyllic setting is also just minutes to grocery and drug stores, several golf courses including the historic Briars Golf Club, restaurants, banks and services. Newmarket is only 30 minutes away, Richmond Hill 45, downtown Toronto an hour (thanks to the Highway 404 extension), and Muskoka 1.5 hours. At home, the scenery includes herons sunning on the docks and ducks floating by. To enhance the country club ambience of the neighbourhood, Alliance Homes has designed The Club House, a private and inviting gathering spot, in breezy, Cape Cod-inspired architecture. Among the amenities in the Club House will be a grand reception hall with sitting areas, a hobby/crafts room, a fitness/studio room and a meeting room, as well as both covered and open patios on the upper floor deck. The heated outdoor pool

BRAESTONE Up-country living in the Horseshoe Valley

G

eorgian International proudly introduces Braestone – an extraordinary, country estate community nestled in the Horseshoe Valley. This natural haven offers a world of activities on your doorstep, including skiing, golfing, cycling, hiking, fishing and boating. Explore historic villages, quaint art galleries, fine dining options and artisan farmers’ markets. Both Barrie and Orillia are a short drive from Braestone. The 229 estate homes at Braestone are a modern interpretation of the 19th-century farmhouses, sheds and barns that originally dotted this region, and include dormered rooflines and wide, covered verandas. In order to meet your needs, Braestone offers a variety of floorplans. Living history dwells at Braestone Farm, where more than one hundred of Braestone’s 566 acres are dedicated to growing crops. Braestone’s 275-acre nature preserve flows through, and around, its neighbourhoods. Those who enjoy walking, cycling, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing will be enthralled with the trail system that winds its way through forests, and alongside streams and ponds, where a diverse wildlife population is prevalent. Family memories will be made with Braestone’s homegrown ‘Remarkable’ experiences. Bake up that perfect pie after a trip to the berry patch with your kids. At the end of a pleasant day spent horseback riding, gather under the stars at Skyfall – Braestone’s hilltop observatory. Your children will love playing in the Treehouse, or to bed down at the Youngster’s Camp Site. As the seasons change, visit the Orchard for crisp, tart apples, and when the holidays approach, you can select your Christmas tree

without having to leave the stone gates. Come winter, enjoy a steaming mug of tea with a touch of honey at the Apiary after a full day of tobogganing or skating on Braestone’s own hills and pond. William Hicks of Hicks Partners, the architect who created Oakville’s iconic Chelster Hall, continues to define design excellence with sophisticated exteriors and thoughtful interiors at Braestone. Varying roof pitches, dormers and dimensional facades complement neighbouring homes for a very pleasing streetscape. Homes are set back from the road for added privacy, and authentic gas-burning lanterns light your way home. Natural light streams in to homes from all four sides to highlight beautiful features and finishes, including wider floor plates and a central staircase. With the positioning of the coach house, a natural courtyard is created that’s perfect for entertaining. Consider finishing the second storey of the coach house for more living space or a private studio. As part of the first phase, 59 estate lots, up to halfan-acre in size, were recently released with picturesque views of hills, valleys and meadows. Six different models are available to accommodate the required number of bedrooms. Choose from two-storey designs, bungalows or a bungalow with loft option for a richer living experience at Braestone. n

theatre festival, a museum, a harbour, a curling club and the Meaford Golf and Country Club. Within the Gates of Kent community, a 1,300-squarefoot reception room, complete with a kitchenette, will be available to residents to host gatherings and family events. Quick move-in dates are available on select models. Reid’s Heritage Homes insists that all homes are built to Energy Star standards, which helps to save on energy costs and consumption, while providing homeowners with a healthy environment. Reid’s Heritage Homes won three EnerQuality awards this year. Last year, the builder was awarded the Avid Benchmark Award, which is the result of homeowners filling out the Avid Ratings Canada’s GoSurvey program, measuring everything from the overall home buying experience, to the homebuyer’s willingness to refer other potential purchasers, including the number of referrals that they have made. Life doesn’t get much easier, or more enjoyable, than living at Gates of Kent. n

RESORT-STYLE LIVING Briar Hill homeowners enjoy access to a comprehensive list of activities and amenities that would rival any all-inclusive vacation destination. However, living at Briar Hill isn’t a two-week holiday where you have to fit everything in; it’s a full-time lifestyle that will keep you active, healthy and happy. New homeowners are offered a one-year golf membership to the award-winning Nottawasaga Resort golf courses, where 45 holes of golf can be enjoyed. In addition, the resort’s 70,000-square-foot fitness club features a fully equipped gym, an indoor pool with a sauna and whirlpool, indoor tennis, squash and racquetball courts, spa services, an outdoor pool and six kilometers of walking trails. An on-site arena, with two NHL-size hockey rinks, hosts organized hockey leagues throughout the year. active-life.ca

On those days when you just don’t feel like cooking, or want to take guests out to dinner, you have the choice of two inviting restaurants, which range from casual to gourmet within the Nottawasaga Resort. NEW RELEASE OF VISTAS HOMESITES Now is the perfect time to join the Briar Hill community, as they recently unveiled a new phase. Homeowners can choose from a wide selection of home styles, which include fully detached homes, semi-detached bungalows, bungalows with lofts and townhomes. Prices start in the upper $300,000s for these exquisitely designed and wellcrafted homes that boast open-concept floorplans, and superior features and finishes. At Briar Hill, luxury is standard and many elements that are often considered premium upgrades, such as granite kitchen countertops, oak stairs and railing systems, as well as many other finishes, are included in the home price. Thoughtful consideration has been given to the overall layout in order to accommodate a variety of lifestyle needs. Meticulous attention to design details ensures a graceful and continuous flow from room to room, creating the ideal environment for both entertaining and everyday living. The newest Vista release is highlighted by stunning views of the rolling countryside and the Nottawasaga Valley. Available with golf course, courtyard or ravine views, homeowners can choose from walkout elevations that lead to a private patio, or outstanding sightlines from a raised deck. And just like being on holidays, your exterior surroundings are taken care of. There’s no need to worry about lawn care, exterior upkeep, window cleaning or the maintenance of common areas, as all of this is looked after and included in your low monthly maintenance fee. As a result, you have much more free time to take a leisurely stroll, improve your golf game, start a new hobby, or invite neighbours and loved-ones over for a barbeque. Whatever your interpretation is of an ideal life, you’ll have the freedom to enjoy it at Briar Hill.

Within the Briar Hill community, the bustling 16,000-square-foot community centre is a social hub where homeowners can participate in a range of daily events, enjoy a game of billiards or shuffleboard, or simply relax in the sunshine on the beautiful garden patio. The charming town of Alliston is within minutes of Briar Hill and offers a wealth of local amenities, such as shopping, specialty shops, theatres and fine dining, as well as health and medical services, including a hospital. The community is centrally located to nearby centres, such as Cookstown, Beeton, Totteham, Newmarket, Barrie and Vaughan – all of which have a full complement of shopping, services and entertainment. Located just 15 minutes from Highway 400, off of Highway 89, homeowners have easy access to both Toronto and cottage country. Life doesn’t get much better than this. n

[THE FRIDGE WHISPERER]

A pairing of TWO CLASSICS

Dust off the waffle iron and put it to good use for an enlightened approach to Eggs Benny. This meal is perfect as an elegant, light supper, or a late morning brunch at the cottage – and there’s always a waffle iron hanging around the cottage.

Cornbread Waffles Eggs Benedict

• Preheat a two- or four-grid square electric waffle iron. • Meanwhile, in a medium bowl whisk together cornmeal, flour, sugar, baking powder, salt and baking soda. • In another bowl, whisk together sour cream, buttermilk, eggs, butter and oil, then gently fold into the cornmeal mixture until completely combined.

• Pour a scant 1/4-cup of batter into the centre of waffle grids, close lid, and cook according to manufacturer’s instructions. Keep waffles warm in a low oven until ready to serve. Makes approximately 16 three-inch square waffles.

bowl over half a pot of simmering water. Whisk until thickened (about 3 minutes), moving bowl on and off the heat to ensure yolks do not cook.

1 bunch thin asparagus spears, trimmed, spears blanched in simmering water for 2 minutes 4 soft poached eggs Chopped dill for garnish

• Remove bowl from heat and whisk in a few drops of butter at a time to ensure sauce doesn’t separate, then whisk in lemon juice and season to taste with salt and pepper. Keep sauce warm until ready to serve. Use within 1 hour.

• Place a warm waffle on each of 4 plates, add asparagus spears in a single layer, top with poached egg, spoon over hollandaise, garnish with dill and serve immediately. n Photography, Deb Rankine
