Not for the squeamish

PUBLISHER Michael Rosset ASSOCIATE PUBLISHER Hope McLarnon EDITOR Catherine Daley ART DIRECTOR

AS A CHILD, I became very anxious when I had a

dentist or doctor’s appointment. “Look through a magazine,” my mother suggested. “It will help to calm your fears.” I could only focus on the inevitable pain, or the serious diagnosis that I was sure to receive once I entered the examination room. Still, as I flipped through the pages of Reader’s Digest (barely digesting what I was scanning), I thought how cool it would be to be the author of one of those articles. Yep – my 10-year-old-self’s idea of ‘making it’ was reading my name in a magazine in a waiting room. Because it has to be one of the best times to read a magazine or two, or three. Apparently, I have tiny tear ducts. It’s only taken six decades and umpteen specialists to receive that diagnosis, but at least it’s now being attended to. When I was referred to one of the leading ophthalmologists in Toronto, I rifled through the magazines in his waiting room. “What’s with the reading material?” I asked him when I was called in. He gave me a questioning look, and I continued, “You’re not appealing to all of your patients with only one magazine title – and sports of all things.” He laughed, and said that no one had ever called him out on it before. Stretching my tear ducts didn’t help the problem, so the next step was to cut them. On the day of the so-called surgery, I was instructed to lie back in a chair. “Are you sure you don’t want to put my head in some type of vice in case I move?” I asked the doctor. He reassured me that I’d be fine. After some numbing drops, he injected freezing into the corner of each eye. I can’t lie – the needles hurt, and I found that I was white-knuckling the arms of the chair. “Hold that for a couple minutes,” he said, and I pressed a tissue on both sides of my nose. Next, I could hear the snip, snip, snip of the scissors, and then saw smoke rising from my eyes as he cauterized them. “You’re done,” he said, and handed me a prescription. I wasn’t nervous, but when I describe this surgical treatment, many people physically react with a shudder and a grimace. My attitude, these days, is more along the lines of ‘que sera, sera’. We don’t know yet if the procedure was successful. However, one thing that I do know for sure is that this doctor will be receiving a stack of magazines from HPG for his waiting room – including Active Life.

BLYTHWOOD HOMES: Niagara Region’s Most Meticulous Homebuilder There’s a good reason why Blythwood Homes’ building sites sell out so fast: It’s because smart people know good quality and understand the logic of moving to one of Canada’s most livable areas.

QUALITY

Few builders offer the quality that’s included in every Blythwood Home. If you compare Blythwood’s standards to those of other builders you’ll realize they are above and beyond many other builders’ upgrades.

LOCATION

It’s always been said that real estate is all about location. No one says this better than Blythwood Homes, as they build exclusively in Niagara Region’s most desirable locations.

VALUE

Best of all, is the exceptional value inherent to Blythwood Homes. Comparable homes in the GTA would easily run into seven figures and wouldn’t be as well constructed.

[FINANCE]

The cost of DIVORCE

LEGAL COSTS The cost to get divorced can vary immensely. According to a survey done by CanadianLawyerMag.com, an uncontested divorce in Canada can cost a minimum of $801, averaging out at around $1,043. It’s always cheaper if both you, and your soonto-be ex, can agree on how to split assets and other issues. However, if the separation isn’t amicable, and the divorce is contested, legal bills could go through the roof – literally. The same survey of 179 lawyers in 2011, found that fees charged by a lawyer for a contested case can be as high as $33,881. The average cost of a contested divorce costs approximately $10,000 per case. MARITAL HOME Home prices in Canada have risen significantly. The home that you purchased with your soon-to-be former spouse will be worth a lot more than when you first moved in. This can be a good thing, as the equity in the marital home will leave you both with a sizable chunk of money to purchase your own home, if you so desire. Often, one party may want to stay in the conjugal home, but it’s important to acknowledge that you may not be able to afford the home on your own. In reality, your housing costs will double after a divorce. If you’re covering all the expenses on a single income, you may not be able to enjoy the lifestyle you’ve become accustomed to.

14

P14finance.indd 14

ACTIVE LIFE

It’s important that you fully understand your financial situation so that you are prepared for your new single reality. DIVISION OF OTHER ASSETS Registered Retirement Savings can also be divided, as well as Canada Pension Plan (CPP) payments. These issues need to be addressed when dividing assets, especially if one spouse stayed at home to raise the children. According to the Government of Canada website, the CPP contributions that you and your spouse, or common-law partner, made during the time that you lived together can be equally divided after a divorce or separation. This is called credit splitting.

ENTERTAINMENT COSTS Depending upon your preferences and interests, chances are that your entertainment costs will go up once you’re single again. Data shows that single people, regardless of age, spend a disproportionate amount of money going out for dinner, drinks and movies, compared to their married peers. When you’re single, it can be wonderful to have the freedom to meet up with friends, expand your entertainment horizons and, if you so choose, get back on the dating scene – but it all costs money. TRANSPORTATION COSTS The one area where a newly single person can save is on transportation. The marital home had to be conducive to the needs of both you and your partner, whereas your new home just has to serve you. If it’s possible, move closer to where you work and play, and ditch the car. According to data from the Canadian Automobile Association, the average annual cost to own, and operate, a vehicle is $10,456 per year. By reducing your commute and taking public transit, or walking or biking, transportation costs can be reduced dramatically. Divorce or separation can happen at any time during a relationship. Regardless of the reasons, it’s important that you fully understand your financial situation so that you are prepared for your new single reality. n As finance editor for HOMES Publishing Group, Rubina Ahmed-Haq shares her expertise in our sister publication Condo Life. In addition, she is a regular contributor on CBC Radio, blogger at RateSupermarket.ca, and has her own website alwayssavemoney.ca.

eniors are getting divorced at a rate faster than ever before. According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, silver separation (as it’s sometimes called) is on the rise for those who are over the age of 65. In 2008, 1,237 women and 2,486 men (65 and older) divorced. In Canada, it’s estimated that there are more than 71,000 divorces every year. After decades of marriage, there are a number of financial factors to be aware of before you go your separate ways.

QUESTION AND CONSIDERATIONS BEFORE YOU BUY:

• What are you going to use it for? If you can’t figure out how it’ll help

improve your life, save your money, because it isn’t worth buying – yet.

• What’s costing you the most? Smart devices can be more efficient than

their less-intelligent ancestors. If you’re looking to save money and energy, smart home tech is a great place to start.

• What technologies do you already use? Look at your phone, your home network and your e-devices throughout the home. Only buy devices that work with the stuff you already own.

• How old are the devices you currently have in your home? If it’s time to

replace the old stove, anyway, a smart stove could be a worthwhile upgrade.

and you’re an android user. If you’re planning on buying a new phone soon, factor in your smart home plans as well. It’s all about timing. The technologies are still in that embryonic, Model T stage of development, with long-term standards yet to be worked out. It’s like when Beta and VHS duked it out for VCR domination. The last thing you want to do is buy something that becomes a technological dead-end in six months, so don’t be too quick to pull out your credit card – just yet.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

We’re hearing a lot about so-called smart home technology these days, and for good reason. Smart home technology can make your life more fun and more efficient, and it’s way cooler than it was in the bad old days. n Carmi Levy is a well-known technology analyst and journalist whose work has appeared in a wide range of publications. As the CTV Technology Analyst, he contributes to CTV and Bell Media stations across Canada. evices and appliances that were once uncommunicative and disconnected are suddenly developing computer smarts, wireless capabilities and environmentally aware sensors. George Jetson would have been envious. New technology can do things like robotically determine when you’re low on eggs, find the lowest price online and even order them for you. It can also read the room as you walk in, or out, and adjust the temperature and lighting accordingly for the most comfortable, and efficient, experience. Smart home technology is being touted as the next best thing in tech. But all the hype can also lead to disappointment. That coollooking smart kettle may appear to be magically perfect during the in-store demo, but when you get it home, you may discover that it wasn’t so magical after all. The big reveal might have been based on Samsung’s SmartThings technology, which doesn’t talk to the Apple HomeKit (that you own) devices. As a result, you’ll be making tea the old-fashioned way for a while. The two leaders in phones, appliances and online services that your smart device will ultimately communicate with are Google and Apple. Each have their own unique approach to smart home technology. Unfortunately, not every smart device is designed to work with both. Take the time to learn about compatibility. Having the best features means nothing if they can only be controlled from an iPhone,

[COVER STORY]

Christine Bentley is a renowned Canadian journalist who was a reporter and news anchor for 35 years on CTV. Bentley, 64, started at CTV in 1977 without an ounce of journalism training. “It was absolutely meant to be,” says Bentley, “Originally I wanted to go to drama school, which at the time my parents considered one level above being a stripper. I graduated Summa Cum Laude with an Honours BA. I even wrote my LSATS.”

The time was right

Survive and thrive

It certainly didn’t hurt that Bentley spoke four languages, including French, German, Spanish and English, as a result of her vagabond childhood spent travelling the world with her diplomat father. “When I started in television, it was the right time for women. We were a rarity and, to some degree, window dressing. Audiences were tired of seeing old white men. They wanted the people who they invited into their homes to be like them, part of their family. Women used to tell me that their husbands bragged that they went to bed with me when I anchored the 11 o’clock news.”

“There were a lot of things to adjust to throughout 2012 and a part of 2013,” says Bentley. “My father died, which was a huge psychological adjustment. For a few months our whole family was in shock. That summer I went to England to visit my sister who was undergoing treatment for a serious illness. Shortly after returning home I was let go by CTV. And to round things out, I slipped on some black ice at the beginning of 2013 and shattered my shoulder in nine pieces.”

In 1984, Bentley became one of the first female anchors to get pregnant at CFTO News in Toronto, and she wanted to set a precedent for those women who would follow. “There was the belief in the industry that viewers couldn’t handle you being away for several months – the connection was that strong. There was a fear of breaking that connection, what it would do to the ratings,” says Bentley. “So I only took four weeks off.”

By the time Bentley left CTV in 2012, at the age of 60, she had reported on a broad spectrum of news beats, including city hall, municipal politics, mayoral elections and provincial politics at Queens Park. After a stint as the network’s weekend anchor, Bentley then spent many years as a co-host on Night Beat News before assuming CTV’s News at 6 with co-host Ken Shaw. And then, suddenly, without warning, Bentley was gone.

It was a difficult period of time for Bentley, both physically and mentally – a time when she felt very close to the edge.“I knew I needed to make a choice and I did,” she says. “The choice was to survive and thrive. And that’s exactly what I did.”

A new lease on life

Bentley reunited with a few of her former colleagues, including Kate Wheeler and Sharon Caddy, and over a few bottles of Prosecco, the plan was hatched. “If we were not suitable for TV anymore, maybe we could try radio,” says Bentley. The plan was to create a talk show that would empower, and inspire, women. In addition to profiling Canadians (especially women) from all walks of life, the creators also wanted the show to be a platform for people who champion worthy causes. ‘What She Said!’ was born. Skewed to women over the age of 35, the show also has a strong male listenership, appealing to those who are interested in hearing about what is going on with the women in their lives. The show, co-hosted with Kate Wheeler, profiles a variety of content that includes news, lifestyle, entertainment and technology. What She Said! can be heard in Toronto on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 6 p.m. to 7 p.m. on the Jewel Radio Network – 88.5.

As life sometimes goes, serendipity and a healthy amount of destiny interceded. A friend of Bentley’s set up an interview for her at a small television station in Barrie. “I was given an audition, and when I came out I was told that I could start Monday at 9.a.m.”, says Bentley. “I was told that I spoke eloquently and looked great on camera.”

Empty nest syndrome Her difficult challenges aside, Bentley still maintains that one of the hardest transitions in her life, so far, was becoming an empty nester. Bentley’s twin 31-yearold boys, Jordan, a Grammy award-winner known as DJ Swivel, and Matt, a vice president in real estate development, both left home for their respective universities around the same time. “It was a crippling time for me. I love to be needed,” says Bentley. As far as her sons were concerned they didn’t have a choice but to go away to university, because Bentley told them that if they didn’t attend post-secondary away from home, she wouldn’t pay their way. Bentley feels that university is about so much more than what is being taught in the classroom, and she wanted Jordan and Matt to have, and to savour, those life-altering experiences. Now that the heavy lifting of child rearing, parent care and career actualization are behind her, Bentley decided it was time to try new things. “I actually believe that I am built for busy, and for stress, to some degree. The more I have on my plate the better I feel, the more I get done and the happier I am. My relationships with friends and family keep me centered, as does having a routine.”

Photo, (left) Denise Grant

Commitment to community

Bentley participates in a diverse continuum of charity and community work. She has been involved with Habitat for Humanity for close to eight years and is an ambassador for Habitat Women Build, which she says is a sisterhood of commandership. “Women are hugely collaborative. As we work on the build, on one side of us there could be a woman who is a millionaire, and on the other side, it could be the woman that the house is being built for. Nobody cares. It is important to share our resources, to share what we have, both in our own neighbourhoods as well as in the big picture. At the end of the day it can’t just be about me; we all need to get along with one another to survive. I am always most grateful.”

Other charities include being on the board of After Breast Cancer, an ambassador-at-large for the Children’s Wish Foundation of Canada, and she’s a supporter of the Canadian Cancer Society. Speaking at seniors’ residences is very gratifying for Bentley. Her talks centre around living in the moment, getting out of old habits and not being afraid to try something new. She points out that it’s all about the art of ageing well. “I love beautiful stories like the 92-yearold who graduated, just because. Or the 82-year-old who got into serious weight lifting, just because,” says Bentley. “Instead of finding reasons why you shouldn’t do something, ask instead, why not? Life is all about mindset.” Throughout her career, Bentley has received numerous rewards for broadcasting, as well as her charitable work, including Consumers’ Choice Awards, Canada ‘Woman of the Year’ (2009); the Rotary Club of Canada’s Paul Harris Fellowship Award for Community Service (2009); Olympic Torchbearer GTA Toronto (2010); Women of Baycrest Award (2011); Famous People Players of Toronto Daring to Dream Award (2012). Bentley also received a star on the Scarborough Walk of Fame in 2013. “Of all the awards that I have received, the greatest ones are those that recognize my work in the community and my philanthropy,” says Bentley. In her limited downtime, Bentley loves to read and stays fit with power walking and aqua fit classes. Her one guilty pleasure is pure escapism, which includes watching all the Housewives series on TV. “I never intend to become old. Apart from having no wrinkles and being a bit slimmer, I don’t hugely miss my youth. I will most certainly age, but I don’t ever want to become the stereotypical old person that I saw in my head when I was 18. My idea of hell would be to have no one around and nothing to do,” says Bentley. “Even if I end up getting a gig serving soup at the halfway house, I will be productive, have purpose. I am blessed, and there is very little I can’t do.” n ACTIVE LIFE

Time for a change

NOW OFFERING BELKYRA

AS I WRITE THIS MESSAGE the outside temperature is sizzling in the mid 30s, but the first colours of autumn are starting to appear in stores, and online. Led by this year’s Pantone colour, Riverside Blue, along with vibrant burgundy’s and rich earth tones – they are all reminders that change is coming. Without change, we stagnate, and one of the many great things that I love about living in Canada is that we are never idle for long. Although I will miss summer (let’s bottle it up and sprinkle it on a cold day in January, as our Production Manager, Lisa Kelly, says), I still look forward to fall. I’m also eager to share ACTIVE LIFE’S Body & Soul section in this issue. Find out what’s trending this fall in our Style File, followed by Dr. Sam Hanna’s article on ‘Body Contouring – a revolutionary aging alternative’. You can enter to win a Gift Certificate (valued up to $2,500) for a Body Contouring Treatment Package by Dr. Hanna, our resident Dermatologist from Dermatology ON BLOOR. Two must-reads include an article on ‘Inherited Breast Cancer’, followed by Tina Petrova’s article on ‘Chronic Pain – the silent health crisis’. Not only will they inform, but they will inspire. And don’t miss checking out ‘Curling – a major revival’ for a winter fitness idea from the past – made new. Congratulations to Elisabeth Farquharson, from Oshawa, for winning ACTIVE LIFE’S May/June Body & Soul Contest. Farquharson won a Grande Naturals Package from Fernanda’s Beauty and Spa Supplies.

Often referred to as Puffer jackets – from vests to full jackets; denim to fur trimmed, they’re a must-have staple and a major fall fashion statement .

Shearling Coats

Hoodies

From sweat shirts to mid-calf dresses, hoodies are great for active wear. (hm.com; hanes.com).

Schoolgirl Pinafores

Rebooted from the past – cropped, caped and hooded.

Even us mature girls can wear a long, plaid jumper (mango.com; topshop.com).

Off-the-shoulder

Unruffled Florals

The top trend of spring and summer is showing strong for fall with creative layering, and off-the-shoulder jackets and coats.

Dresses, skirts, pants and tops – incorporate florals, and mix and match.

The Pantone Fashion Color Report (pantone.com/fashion-color-report-fall-2016#hero) features a number of options, starting with the blue family (Riverside is at the top of the list), followed by a gala of earth tones and a sea of vibrant colours that mirror the strength and tranquility that fall brings. By adding trendy colours to your existing wardrobe, either through accessories or splurging on a new piece, you can stop that proverbial fashion clock from ticking.

Body Contouring

Non-surgical alternatives for targeting problem areas BY SAM HANNA, MD

O

ver the past 20 years, dermatologists have had an every-growing range of options available to them in order to help patients fight facial aging. In the last few years, newer tools have been introduced to address a whole host of age-related changes, including those linked to sun damage and lifestyle – for above, and below, the jaw line.

NON-SURGICAL OPTIONS Thermage uses safe and effective radio waves to help tighten lax and wrinkled skin on the neck, chest and abdomen – often in a single session and with no downtime. Non-surgical fat reduction is making headway when it comes to body contouring. There are many new alternatives for those who want to avoid the costs associated with more invasive procedures like liposuction,

BODY MAKEUP We all have shortcomings that we’d like to hide. Coming soon to Canada is a camouflage makeup called CoverBlend. Body makeup can accentuate the positives while cleverly hiding the negatives. Correctly applied, body makeup can augment your newly re-contoured abs, pecs or calves – if you so desire. Non-surgical body contouring is here to stay, and in the next few years more options will be introduced. A healthy diet and exercise are, of course, the foundation for achieving the shape that you want. But these new devices and procedures can help you to love the skin you’re in.

26

P26contouring.indd 26

ACTIVE LIFE

and the recovery time that goes along with it. A high-frequency ultrasound device, like Liposonix, directs the right dose of fat-destroying energy at a targeted area. Again, often after only one session, a reduction of up to 2.5 cemtimetres can be achieved off the waist. Coolsculpting uses a cryolipolysis device and freezes the fat away to help attain a smoother, more toned body appearance. The first area that most people want to target is the spare tire. This persistent pooch of fat over the abdominal muscles is a constant struggle even for those who adhere to an ongoing exercise regime. But, widespread complaints don’t end there. Many people can relate to bra-strap fat at the sides of the chest, an upper back fat pad, saddlebags, suprapubic (just above the pubic

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

hairline) fat, as well as excess fat of the knees. All of these can be safely, and effectively, treated. For those who have had success with tummy tucks and liposuction, Lipsonix and Coolsculpting can further refine their postoperative shape without the risks, costs or pain of additional surgeries.

NECK REJUVENATION No matter what your shape, many people find that the pad of fat under their neck can affect their overall appearance. A newly approved product called Belkyra was mentioned in the May/June issue of ACTIVE LIFE. This injectable product can melt that fat away in as few as two sessions, and patients have been thrilled with the results. Belkyra may also be useful on other targeted areas where re-contouring is desired. However, if the needles make you nervous, Coolsculpting can also help to tighten and re-contour a double chin. n

Take it every night or just when needed. • Helps you also to fall asleep. Sleep satisfaction is guaranteed. Most adults sleep badly (69%). Consequently they are tired and less productive all the next day. Many snorers hold their breath repeatedly and then gasp for air. (Sleep partners will recognize this sleep pattern). Bell Sound Sleep #23 has helped tens of thousands. I bought Sound Sleep for my sleep apnea as recommended by a friend. I started to sleep like a baby. I got rid of my mask and all the gadgets of the CPAP breathing machine I hated for 3 years. Great product. I will always use it. Works wonders for me. Gene Fairchild, 83, The Villages, FL. Bell Lifestyle has literally thousands of truthful testimonials like these: My life has been changed since taking SOUND SLEEP. I was taking medicine for stress and insomnia. In the morning I felt tired and without desire to do something all day. I decided to make a change and get off the medicine that was making me depend on it. Sound Sleep #23 really helped me to sleep and feel relaxed the next day. I really recommend this product. Fabiola Salgado, 33, Wheeling, IL. First night my husband didn’t snore at all! For the last 10 years I bought my husband the nose strips advertised on TV, pillows, aromatherapy and others all in vain. Finally, I found Bell Sound Sleep #23 and for the first time something worked. I will always make sure to keep an extra bottle in case the store runs out and I want no more sleepless nights. Tracy Bradshaw, 43, Rodney, ON. To my surprise I really didn’t snore anymore or gasp for air! For the past 4 years I was increasingly aware of my snoring. I would wake up gasping for air. After taking Bell Sound Sleep #23 I’m sleeping through the night and feel rested and refreshed in the morning. I told everybody who wanted to listen. Mark Wilson, 40, Hudson, NH. CANCER AWARENESS

Inherited Breast Cancer BY JAYNE HOBBS

B

Generational mutations

It is estimated that 5 to 10 per cent of breast cancers are connected to mutated genes that pass through generations of a family – increasing the likelihood of both breast and ovarian cancer. Two of the most common, are breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA 1) and breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA). A blood test can be taken to help identify a specific mutation, and a genetic counselor can discuss the benefits, risks and limitations of genetic testing.

Preventative (prophylactic) surgery

If you test positive for the BRCA gene, it doesn’t mean that you will develop breast cancer, but your risk factor is several times higher than

28

P28cancer.indd 28

ACTIVE LIFE

average (one-in-nine based on 2013 statistics). Preventative surgery is not an urgent matter, but it has been reported that women who have the surgery can reduce their risk of developing breast cancer by 90 per cent. Talk to your doctor and other specialists to review your options.

To this day I don’t regret any of the decisions I have made on my journey. I have reduced my risks [of developing breast and ovarian cancers] to lower than the general population. I still love my body. I have a supportive husband and family. I know with almost certainty that I will be there for my kids when they graduate, or at least I will know that I have done everything in my power to be there.

olette Bossen has never been diagnosed with cancer, but like so many of us, she has been greatly affected by this devastating disease. When Bolette was twelve, her mother was diagnosed with ovarian cancer and was told that she only had six months to live. After a five-year battle, she passed away at the age of forty-five. Encouraged by her father, Bolette was tested for inherited mutated genes after joining in a research trial and meeting with a genetic counselor in 2005. Although she tested positive, it was not until 2010 (married with two young boys) that she decided to take preventative steps, eventually having her ovaries removed, followed by a prophylactic double mastectomy. Chronic Pain

The silent health crisis

C

hronic pain is a condition where neural pathways are sometimes traumatized by events such as surgery, post cancer treatment, a motor vehicle accident or other type of damage. Injured limbs, or wounds on the body, eventually heal after a period of time, but the CNS (Central Nervous System) can remain wired, and keep on firing with pain, sometimes for the rest of one’s life.

THE COST OF PAIN

As of 2014, one in four Canadians who were surveyed reported that they were living with some form of long-term (extending beyond three to six months*) pain. Chronic pain patients in North America currently outnumber those with cancer, diabetes and heart disease, combined. Pain, as a symptom, is often the primary reason for both emergency room and G.P. (general practitioner) visits. By the year 2020, this number is expected to climb to one in three due to a fast-aging population who will require additional healthcare intervention, such as knee and hip replacements because of worn joints and arthritis. At present, ‘pain’ costs Canadians more than 60 billion dollars on an annual basis in terms of lost wages, diminished productivity, and the cost of treatment from both the healthcare system and private insurance. The number of speciality pain clinics across Canada have declined due to government budget cuts

30

ACTIVE LIFE

P30chronicpain.indd 30

to healthcare. Wait times to see a specialist can be lengthy. We are often left to fend for ourselves when it comes to understanding, and managing, chronic pain.

PAIN MANAGEMENT STRATEGIES

Gentle exercise helps to keep joints limber and lubricated, in addition to helping with balance as we age. Senior classes in Tai chi and Yoga are not only bone strengthening, but they are also good for the heart and overall body conditioning. Watching our weight and being physically fit helps to promote healing after an injury or trauma. Following an anti-inflammatory diet can greatly enhance one’s ability to control and manage diseases such as Fibro, C.F.S. (Chronic Fatigue Syndrome) and arthritis. There’s nothing like soaking in water to ease a plethora of ailments. Combine Epsom salts with baking soda, Vitamin C powder and essential oils that calm pain (such as white cedar oil) to increase the alkalinity in the body, which helps to ease conditions such as R.A. (Rheumatoid Arthritis).

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

As a mood-booster, meditation can assist with coping skills when life throws us curve balls, in addition to dealing with symptoms like anxiety and insomnia. If you find yourself on the other end of a R.A. diagnosis, are in need of cancer-related surgery, or are involved in an accident, one of the keys to feeling better is to start therapy right away. A treatment plan from a chiropractor, osteopath or massage therapist can do wonders to stave off long-term pain by addressing soft tissue injuries like whiplash and low back strain. If left unchecked, these injuries tend to anchor in the body and become more difficult to treat over time. There are multi-disciplinary clinics in most urban centres that have medical doctors on staff who specialize in treating injuries and chronic pain. There’s no denying that chronic pain is a serious health issue. If we’re better equipped with education and awareness, we may be able to help alleviate particular pain ailments, not only for ourselves, but when assisting a loved one. n *Figures in the U.S.A., U.K. and Australia are comparable.

Tina Petrova is an author, award-winning filmmaker and motivational speaker (TED-X, United Nations). Curling A traditional Canadian pastime BY ROB MABEE

F

or those who love the sport, they often feel that curling has never received the respect that it deserves. It turns out, that this traditional Canadian pastime, which requires ice and rocks, is experiencing a major resurgence, not just for the top players at professional levels, but also for grassroots curling clubs across the country. Now, more active seniors are finding it’s never too late to start reaping the benefits of the game. For some, those benefits include getting the chance to play with some of curling’s biggest stars. Since its introduction as a medalsport in the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympic Games, curling has seen a new breed of high-performance athletes emerge. Today’s competitive players are in peak physical and mental condition, and are true champions on the international stage.

SOARING IN POPULARITY

Fans are tuning in to curling’s top televised events, like The Brier and The Scotties, with audience numbers outdrawing hockey, and even the Academy Awards. Participation in the sport is also growing in popularity across the country. Those involved in the sport suggest that there has been a 44 per cent increase in senior curlers (players 50+) since 2013. Curling provides great exercise, increased flexibility and is a complete cardiovascular workout, whether throwing a rock or sweeping for a teammate. For many, the social aspect of the game makes it very appealing. With curling, participants have the

opportunity to break away from their regular routine, get exercise and simply have fun with newfound friends. Great sportsmanship is also associated with curlers, as demonstrated by the longstanding tradition of the winning team buying drinks for the losing team.

THE CANADIAN SENIOR CURLING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Until recently, there was a large gap between curling in a weekend bonspiel at a local club, and watching top athletes compete on television. To help bring these two worlds closer together, Everest Funeral Planning and Concierge has led a contest over the past two years. Randy Ferbey, legendary Hall-of-Famer and fourtime world curling champion, has seen senior curlers flock to their local clubs to get a chance to play with their curling heroes.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

Often, senior curlers are the backbone of the sport at club level, but they aren’t getting the recognition that they deserve. By becoming a title sponsor of the Canadian Senior Curling Championships in 2015, Everest and Randy Ferbey have partnered to create the Everest-Ferbey National Pro Am with a nationwide contest that connects Olympic Champions, like Jennifer Jones and Brad Jacobs, with the larger Canadian senior curling community. This fall represents the third year for the contest, which will start in October at curling clubs across the country. Four new winners will be selected to curl with their heroes in the Pro Am game that will take place in Fredericton in March 2017. Initiatives like these help to recognize, and celebrate, the increased number of seniors who are curling in Canada. Curlers tend to be more active, they enjoy meeting new people, and they just might get a chance to curl with Randy Ferbey and Jennifer Jones. n For more information visit EverestFuneral.ca/curling active-life.ca

ver the past few years, European River Cruises have become one of the most fashionable vacation alternatives. There are now more than 300 vessels on the waterways of Europe, and 100 of these were only introduced in the past decade. To understand and report on this trend, I recently sailed through five countries and on three rivers – the Rhine, Moselle and Danube. Now I understand the craze, and I’m a convert. Cruising the ancient waterways of Europe, through the heart of many of the world’s greatest civilizations, is, in itself, one of the most civilized ways to travel. and use experienced local guides to provide passengers with a firsthand appreciation of the various destinations. From the Moselle, for instance, Avalon took me up into the hills above the river to a hidden valley to explore the imposing castle of Burg Eltz – a magnificent place that I was unlikely to discover for myself. From the Danube in Germany, Uniworld took passengers for a ride in a horse-drawn wagon through a scenic village in the Bavarian Forest to sample homebaked bread fresh from the village oven. Most companies also arrange private classical music concerts in Vienna in sumptuous palaces that aren’t available to the casual tourist. The range of itineraries on offer is growing as fast as the number of ships. From the traditional base routes on the Rhine and Danube, travelers now have a much wider choice. Cruise through Francehere to Captions Paris on the Seine, to Bordeaux on

the Garonne, or along the Dordogne and the Gironde rivers. Other options include Burgundy on the Rhône and the Saône. Explore Spain and Portugal from the Douro river valley. Or travel through Eastern Europe on the lower reaches of the Danube to Serbia, Croatia, Slovakia, Romania and Bulgaria. No matter which way you sail, you will be rewarded by an array of irresistible sights, from the imperial palaces of Vienna and Budapest, to the natural splendour of the Danube Delta or the Rhine Gorge. Whichever river you choose to explore, you’ll sail by some fabulous vineyards where the produce from the hillsides flows right into the glass that you cradle at dinner. River cruise companies vie for gastronomic accolades, and the cuisine from the regions that you travel through are an intrinsic part of the cruising experience. There is nothing better than to enjoy a tutored wine tasting from a local vintner who points at

a steeply sloped vineyard, and says that the nectar you are enjoying comes from that very spot. On some ships you can accompany the chef when he goes to buy fresh produce for the evening meal from the local markets. He or she may also share ancient recipes with you, and let you in on some culinary secrets. You actually taste the history of the places that you pass through, as well as seeing the sights. With such a rapidly growing market, the river cruise companies cannot afford to rest on their laurels. Avalon is featuring more themed cruises for special interest groups, like to Jazz and Wellness cruises. Many are expanding their range of river cruise opportunities to include exotic rivers, such as the Nile in Egypt, the Yangtze in China, the Mekong in Vietnam and Cambodia, and the Irrawaddy in Burma (now called Myanmar). As a recently converted river cruiser, I plan to cruise further into history in the not-to-distant future. n You can hear more from Chris on The Chris Robinson Travel Show. A Trainload of Memories

Experience the Canadian Rockies on the Rocky Mountaineer

BY DAVID EISENSTADT

Lake Shushwap

Raised in Calgary, I visited Banff year-round, travelled by car through the Rogers Pass and saw much of BC’s interior. However, I had never travelled there by train. That changed when my wife, Rhoda, and I discovered the Rocky Mountaineer and their various routes through the majestic Canadian Rockies. 38

hen our Brooklyn, Kelowna, and Toronto families agreed to vacation in Vancouver this past summer, we decided to celebrate five month’s of family events. First, we flew to Calgary to visit family, and then boarded the Mountaineer for a two-day railway odyssey that traced an historic western route from Banff to Kamloops to Vancouver.

For passengers in times past, taking the train wasn’t always that easy. Freight trains, operated by the Canadian National and Canadian Pacific Railways, each owned their own set of tracks. In 1988, the federal government’s Crown Corporation Via Rail Canada launched a Canadian Rockies by Daylight service. Fastforward to May 27, 1990 when the Mountaineer pulled out of the Vancouver station for Banff and Calgary. We boarded in Banff (a station once called Siding 29) and settled into pre-booked, wide berth seats with lots of legroom. We travelled atop the last car that afforded spectacular clear dome views from the inside, and unobstructed tailgate views when outside. Approximately 60 passengers were in our car from all over the world. On the first day, we travelled 497 kilometres (309 miles) from Vancouver to Kamloops. The views of Castle Mountain were breathtaking. This bulky turreted mountain features horizontal rock layers, and was renamed in 1946 by Prime Minister McKenzie King in honour

of General Dwight D. Eisenhower. Ottawa reinstated the original name in 1979. Today, the first mountain tower remains as Eisenhower Peak. We sped through Lake Louise surround by the Mt. Victoria Glacier – elevation of 3,466 metres (11,365 feet). Next, on the journey was the Continental Divide, which is the boundary between Alberta’s Banff National Park and British Columbia’s Yoho National Park. It’s the highest point that we saw, at 1,626 metres (5,332 feet) above sea level, separating the Pacific and Atlantic watersheds. After Wapta Lake we were whisked through the Lower Spiral Tunnel (Mt. Ogden) and Upper Spiral Tunnel (Cathedral Mountain.) We crossed the tracks through the Kicking Horse Canyon seven times, and saw the Columbia River, which has 14 dams along its course to the Pacific Ocean. Up next, was the spectacular Rogers Pass named after Major A. R. Rogers who was a CP Rail surveyor, and discovered the pass through the Selkirk Mountains in July 1882. It was difficult to keep up with all that we witnessed. We sped by Revelstoke and crossed the Columbia River Bridge where we saw the Three Valley Gap Resort – a 200-room resort hotel, complete with a heritage ghost town, antique cars and a railway roundhouse. CP Rail’s last spike took place on November 7th 1885. An original syndicate member, Donald Smith, who founded that railway, drove it in. A cairn marks the spot – noting the linkage of Canada by rail from sea to shining sea. Small BC towns included, Sicamous, Salmon Arm, Chase, Pritchard, Vavenby, Clearwater, Boulder, Little Fort, Ferry and Barrier. Scattered through this region are the hoodoos, which are unique rock-clay formations from the end of the last ice age. We also learned that the May 1906 Great Train Robbery, was Billy Miner’s last successful heist on the South Thompson River Bank.

Spectacular lighting til the end of the tunnel

Every meal in the dining car was a gourmet feast, served by a hospitable team. After an overnight stay at the Kamloops hotel, we were in awe of Lake Shuswap, and then passed through Ashcroft, one of the driest places in Canada netting less than 25.4 centimetres (10 inches) of annual rainfall. After going through the Black Canyon Tunnel, we passed the spot where the last spike was driven in on the eastbound CN Rail. Following Avalanche Alley, Rainbow Canyon, Lytton and Boston Barry, the Skuzzy Creek Bridge was a site to behold at 39.93 metres (131 feet). Hell’s Gate, where 909,218 litres (200 million gallons) of water surges through a 33.53-metre-wide (110 feet) gorge each minute, is the canyon’s renowned tourist attraction. We rolled through Yale, Hope, Agassi, Chiliwack and into the Fraser Valley to Fort Langley. Soon, we spotted the Fraser River Swing Bridge, which crosses New Westminster into Surrey. Vancouver was just around the bend, where we arrived refreshed, and on time. n David Eisenstadt is a founding partner of tcgpr.com, the Canadian partner firm of IPREX Global communications in Toronto. Ontario’s gastronomic capital

PRINCE EDWARD COUNTY BY CECE M. SCOT

P

rince Edward County, a mere two hours east of Toronto, is a sumptuous road-trip-treat. Encompassing the main centres of Picton, Bloomfield and Wellington, along with several smaller communities, the County, with its 35-plus winemakers, is the fastest growing wine region in Ontario. Add farm-to-table produce, selfguided Taste Trails and Arts Trails, along with music festivals, harvest celebrations and scenic lakeside views, and all your senses will be stimulated.

Prince Edward County is the perfect destination for the wine and gourmand savant. The ‘County’ is known as Ontario’s gastronomic capital. Award-winning wines, paired with farm-to-table gourmet meals and eclectic accommodations, make for a perfect weekend. What’s not to love at Hillier Creek Estates & Winery, where a 160-year-old barn has been refitted to accommodate a retail store and wine tasting areas so that you can satiate your hunger with one of their woodfired pizzas, while washing it down with the estates’ vineyard offerings. Huff Estates Winery & Inn was named one of the top 20 wineries in Canada (2012), and is also a two-time

Desirable destinations

Sandbanks Provincial Park, with its three natural sand beaches, is a little piece of the Caribbean in the heart of Ontario. The park is a migration stopover for a variety of birds, and has the largest bay mouth barrier dune formation. Here, the dunes are dramatic, the sand sparkles in the sun, the waves are surf-worthy, and the trails are easy to navigate for hikers and cyclists. Lake on the Mountain, 60 metres above Lake Ontario, is one of nature’s must-see infinity pools. Accommodations in the County range from quaint B&B’s, cozy inns and lakeside-view resorts to eclectic rooms at select wineries (including the Inn at Huff Estates), as well as luxurious suites at the Drake Devonshire, Drake Hotel’s (Toronto) newest venture.

Getting around

Rather than driving, you can ease your intake guilt by cycling between designated stops on both the Taste Trails and Art Trails. EXPERIENCE THE 1000 ISLANDS

K

nown by native people as the ‘Garden of the Great Spirit,’ the 1000 Islands offers a bevy of outsized experiences, including noteworthy historical sites, boating and cruising tours, helicopter sightseeing, exceptional fishing, water sports, museums, lighthouses, castles, on-the-water-dining and much-loved shopping. The area is home to two UNESCO sites, the Frontenac Arch Biosphere and the Rideau Heritage Route. Comprised of 1,864 granite islands that were gouged out by ice age glaciers, the region encompasses

the main centres of Gananoque, (the Canadian gateway to the 1000 Islands), Brockville and Kingston on the Canadian side, as well as northern part of New York State.

Walk back in time

A cruise over to Boldt Castle, on Heart Island, which is actually located in the state of New York, is a fantastical way to experience an old-fashioned love story. Built for his wife, Louise, by George C. Boldt, the well-heeled owner of New York’s famous Waldorf Astoria Hotel, the Rhineland-style, six-storey castle

comes with a drawbridge, several tunnels and 120 rooms. Boldt planned to present the castle to Louise on Valentine’s Day in 1904, but construction on the castle was halted when Louise suddenly died of, what rumour has it are, shadowy circumstances. It is said that George was inconsolable and never visited the castle again. Singer Castle (of Singer Sewing Machine fame) is situated on Dark Island in New York, and hails from the same era as Boldt Castle. This castle also features secret passageways, turrets and an aura of

History comes to life

Significant battles between the U.S. and Canada, who was a British colony, were fought in this region during the War of 1812. These battle sites are available to tour both as guided and self-guided options. The area also offers up the opportunity to gape at the fairy tale castles of the rich and famous who were summer visitors in the early 1900’s – a time universally known as the Gilded Age. Not to be outdone by the privileged, pirates and the purveyors of the prohibition all stake claim to this area’s vibrant past.

A water lover’s seventh heaven

Grab your fishing licenses, book a boat, and prepare for the catch of the day in the teeming waters of the St. Lawrence River and Lake Ontario. Muskies, 60 inches in length, have been reported, along with trophysized northern pike, large and small mouth bass, perch, bullhead, salmon and trout. Kayaking and stand-up paddling (SUP) are excellent adventures in the calm bays of the St. Lawrence River. And scuba diving trips are also available on several of the area’s charter boats.

dark mystery. (Passports are required to visit the castles) A new block of tickets has been released to tour the former maximum security Kingston Penitentiary. Opened in 1835, and now deemed a National Historic Site of Canada, this ‘if only the walls could talk’ prison has housed the most infamous of criminals, including Russell Williams, Paul Bernardo, Clifford Olson, as well as Mohammad and Hamed Shafia. Former guards conduct many of the tours, which adds intrigue and depth to the storied past.

Cultural and culinary experiences

The Thousand Islands Playhouse features two theatres. The 360-seat Springer Theatre (1909), which is the original playhouse, and the 130-seat Firehall Theatre (1913). The Springer Theatre is located on the waterfront and features two of the longest decks in the region along the St. Lawrence River The area has a rock-solid foodie reputation with on-the-water restaurants and cafes, as well as awardwinning wines and locally brewed craft beers. Don’t forget to toss your salad with the delicious, and original, Thousand Island dressing. n ACTIVE LIFE

FAMILY KITCHEN

BY JANE LOCKHART • PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARNAL PHOTOGRAPHY

When clients, Tracey and Scott, decided to upgrade their house, they did so with extended family in mind. Their home, situated on a large property outside of Toronto, has always been the gathering place for the family, which includes four grown daughters and their first grandchild. Like many homes, the kitchen is the hub, so a full kitchen redo was definitely on the table.

FAMILY MUST-HAVES This family wanted a functional kitchen that incorporated everything on their wish list. Not only did it have to have adequate storage areas, but it had to be practical when it came to prepping, cooking, cleaning and, most importantly, making coffee. The island is big enough to assign designated tasks to cooking and cleanup assistants, and also includes a prep sink and custom-sized drawers to easily access everything that’s needed. active-life.ca

2016-07-28 3:06 PM

The coffee centre is purposely within reach, but positioned so as not interfere with other kitchen activities.

Even on the servery, custom-sized drawers are far more functional on the lower cabinetry.

The natural, tumbled travertine floor runs under the entire space to pull it all together. Small subtleties like the circle motif in the glass doors is repeated on the servery.

IT’S ALL IN THE DETAILS With high ceilings, space was optimized to accommodate a large working kitchen and eating area, as well as a servery. A calming colour palette of white, grey, beige, and a dark walnut stain on the centre island, helped to ground the space – providing a warm and welcoming nucleus. Made of solid Ontario maple, all of the cabinets have the same door profile and hardware to provide continuity. However, the striking contrast of the white cabinets surrounding the perimeter, against the warm, dark wood stain on the island, helps to indentify them as separate pieces of furniture, while creating a vibrant energy to the room. A finished look, as it relates to proportion and scale, is achieved by extending the upper cabinetry to the ceiling and then trimming it out with crown moulding.

MIXING FINISHES Caesarstone quartz was chosen for the expansive countertop that wraps around the outside walls, anchoring the five-window bay. Touches of grey in the quartz pick up similar shades in the Carrera marble tile backsplash and the wall colour.

The island countertop features natural quartzite with hints of both grey and beige to accentuate the beige detailing in the tiled backsplash, as well as the travertine floor. Centred under the window to take advantage of the view, a modern take on the farmhouse sink is made of low-maintenance stainless steel, as are the six-burner chef’s stove and integrated refrigerator. A custom-designed bar/servery includes a built-in beverage centre and ‘all touch’ lighting. This piece, along with a rustic wood table, defines the eating area with a combination of textures. Over time, the patina of the table top will warm with family use. Picking up on the circle motif again, the four cylindrical glass shades in the rectangular chandelier sparkle with candle-like bulbs, and complements the shape of the table. Now, when family members drop in for a meal or a visit, this kitchen accommodates everybody and everything – right down to the last cup of coffee. n

THE CONCEPT SHOP THE NEWEST CONCEPT IN HOME DECORATING AND RENOVATING

T

ogether with my partner, Gerry Anacleto, and partners of Tomas Pearce, Tania Richardson and Melandro Quilatan, we all saw the need for a much-needed design niche that was clearly missing in the industry. While many of us would love to be able to afford a designer to totally re-create our living space, the cost associated with this is often out of reach. As a result, we created The Concept Shop – a new pay-as-you-go approach to providing one-stop services to homeowners who might be intimidated by design and decor challenges, along with the building permits and major renovations that go with it. Combined, we have more than 80 years of experience in luxury residential design, high-end hospitality design and custom-built homes. In response to the do-it-yourselfer, we are able to share our expertise, and access a vast network of qualified personnel and industry professionals. Many people just don’t know where to start, so The Concept Shop helps with the process and ignites that creative spark that is often lacking. As Tania Richardson says, “We’re that one degree of separation in providing interior design consultation, colour, decor and furniture suggestions, and we

We smooth out the course of action, and make it easy and affordable with a step-by-step payment method. Homeowners can book us for an hour-long walk-around to get our opinion, or for a more extensive roll-up-our-sleeves consultation.

The scope of work to be done included: • gutting and opening up the wall on the main floor • adding a powder room near the entrance • moving the kitchen to the centre of the home • adding a BioFlame fireplace as the focal point at the back of the home • reconfiguring the second floor to include a family room, bedroom and bathroom • moving the master bedroom and ensuite to the third floor, along with a guest room. George had the knowledge to take the project to fruition, but required some design assistance and direction along the way. With our help, it proved to be the perfect match. n

MAXIMIZE STORAGE SPACE

Gliding Shelf Solutions provides the answers

M

uch has been said about downsizing, but nothing really prepares you for the lack of storage space, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. Regardless of whether you’re moving to a smaller home, townhouse or condo, storage space can be at a premium. Gliding Shelf Solutions has become a leader in making the most out of limited storage space in an effort to help make transitional moves easy and trouble-free.

Here’s what their customers are saying:

Q

Why did you call Gliding Shelf Solutions?

A: We saw an advertisement and immediately recognized how retrofitting gliding shelves into our existing cupboards could help us. After downsizing our home, we knew we didn’t have nearly enough storage space. The ad featured full extension pull out shelves that maximized the space in the cupboard, and gave us the accessibility we needed.

Q

How easy was the process from start to finish?

A: We were pleasantly surprised at how easy, fast and professional this process was. We set up a free no-obligation consultation. The consultant was very knowledgeable; she listened to our needs and was able to see space where we couldn’t. We were provided with a plan for our kitchen and bathroom, which included precise measurements for custom gliding shelves. There was no pressure on us to make a commitment. The installer was professional, worked fast and kept the workspace clean. It was a painless process, and we had our kitchen and bathroom back in a few hours.

58

ACTIVE LIFE

P58glidingshelf.indd 58

Q

What would you say about the pricing of the gliding shelves?

A: Gliding Shelf Solutions can fit within any budget. The quote is broken out per cabinet and includes all materials and installation so there are no hidden surprises. If you can’t do the whole kitchen at once, you can do a couple of cabinets first and more at a later time. There are no additional charges for shipping or surcharges for smaller orders. The width, depth, and height of the glides are custom-made and crafted in Ontario. We found it was well worth the price.

Q

What is the most valuable thing about the gliding shelves?

A: There are so many advantages. Firstly, we didn’t need to renovate our entire kitchen in order to have the convenience of pullout shelving. It’s so much easier to reach things, and to know what you have at a glance. We often wonder why

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

we didn’t do it sooner. Gliding shelves gives you extra time, and cooking is a breeze. We no longer have to get down on our knees and take out half the contents of the cabinet just to reach the one item in the back. It is by far the best transformative renovation we’ve done in our home.

Q

Why choose Gliding Shelf Solutions?

A: Gliding Shelf Solutions is Canadian owned and operated, and the shelves are manufactured here in Ontario. We are great supporters of Made in Canada products. It was an investment in our home and for our future mobility, and it had to be done right. The products are under warranty, so if there is ever a problem, we have peace of mind that it will be resolved quickly and efficiently. n 877.895.9766 / glidingshelf.ca active-life.ca

[IN THE GARDEN]

THE NEW Grasses hen Canadians were first introduced to the concept of planting tall-growing grasses in their gardens, many were unsure of what to make of the notion. Grass, after all, was what we referred to as the ground cover around the home. This ‘ornamental’ stuff was to be planted in the garden and only cut once a year – in the spring.

REASONS TO GROW ORNAMENTAL GRASSES DRAMA | They can grow quite large,

producing an interesting focal point in a sunny garden. SEASONAL INTEREST | Do not cut down ornamental grasses in the fall as most will stand through the winter months, attracting song birds with their heavy seed heads. INSECTS AND DISEASE | Tall grasses are quite resilient and there aren’t any pesky pests that are of significant bother. DROUGHT RESISTANCE | There’s no need to worry about watering tall grasses when you go on summer vacation. However, ornamental grasses do need at least a half-day of sun. DEFINING BOARDERS | Use tall varieties as seasonal screen or hedge, and shorter grasses to define garden space – much the way boxwood has been used for generations.

BETTER WITH AGE | Ornamental

grasses belong in the same category as daylilies, monarda (bee balm), hostas, and the like – all of which mature over three to six years, at which time they lend themselves to dividing. PLANT NOW | When planted in the fall, they will put down roots before a hard freeze up in November or December, thus providing a foundation for aggressive growth in the spring. Also, at this time of year, the plants offered for sale are in bloom, allowing you to see the flower and seed head before you actually plant it. Ornamental grasses fall into two categories – travelers and clumpers. Avoid the former at all costs. A popular traveler is Ribbon Grass (Phalaris arundinacea), which looks great in a pot, but is a complete nuisance in the garden. It will travel through most any soil, under fences, over tree roots and into places that it has no business going. Ask your retailer if it’s a clumping grass before purchasing. I can now say that I’m the proud owner of approximately 20 different types of ornamental grasses. I have a background in traditional garden design, more in keeping with the English cottage-style garden – and believe me; the Brits didn’t see this trend coming.

SHELTER COVE

M

A nature lover’s paradise

any of us have fantasies about getting away from it all – leaving the rat race behind, and living an exciting and meaningful life. We seek a lifestyle that is close to nature, along with the beauty, peace and serenity that goes with it. Shelter Cove, a gated waterfront community on the shores of Lake Erie, makes this dream a reality. Shelter Cove’s list of perquisites is extensive, and it’s difficult to list them all. Because Shelter Cover is a gated community, access is controlled, thus ensuring privacy and security for the residents. Homeowners at Shelter Cove have the privileged opportunity to experience nature in all its glory. It’s customary to see a magnificent bald eagle soaring through the sky, or a flock of wild turkeys browsing the edge of the woods. Deer regularly make their rounds throughout the community. For those who are into boating, Shelter Cove is idyllic. It’s only a short walk from your home to your dock, and you can be on the lake in a matter of minutes. The name, Shelter Cove, relates to the natural harbour that

70

ACTIVE LIFE

P70-71EC_sheltercove.indd 70

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2016

it’s on, which means that the private, on-site marina is protected from the wave action of the lake – ensuring that your watercraft is also protected. If you like fishing, then you likely know that Lake Erie is one of Ontario’s best lakes for sport fishing, with an abundance of walleye and perch. Shelter Cove’s on-site amenities will include a 5,000-square foot, residents-only clubhouse, which is to be completed later this year. There’s also a large outdoor swimming pool, along with planned walking trails and residents’ garden plots, as well as provisions for boat and RV storage. At Shelter Cove, chores like grass cutting, leaf raking and snow shoveling are all looked after, as these are all included in the low $100 per month maintenance fee. In addition, residents enjoy the convenience of natural gas. It’s important to note that the community produces its own drinking water, sourced through reverse osmosis from an artesian well. Shelter Cove also has its very own state-of-the-art wastewater plant, so there are no septic tanks. active-life.ca

2016-07-29 9:27 AM

Leasehold tenure comes with substantial financial advantages Amenities surrounding Shelter Cove include supermarkets, healthcare, golf courses and a variety of restaurants, as well as quaint boutiques, and service clubs in nearby Simcoe and Port Dover. Because Shelter Cove is situated along the shores of Lake Erie, winters here are less severe, thus allowing for the growth of trees and plants not found in Hamilton or Toronto. This area is a part of the great Carolinian Forest Homes at Shelter Cove are priced from as little as $165,000 with leasehold tenure. They’re referred to as manufactured homes, which means that they are built indoors under strict quality control, safe from the elements, ensuring that the building materials are not exposed to rain and, therefore, unlikely to warp. Built to the Ontario Building Code, the homes are exceptionally well insulated and come with high-efficiency gas furnaces to ensure that you’re comfortable and cozy all year long. Leasehold tenure comes with substantial financial advantages, because residents don’t have the capital outlay of a serviced building lot, which can run as

high as $150,000. Investing this money wisely has the potential of paying the annual cost of the lease, while the principal remains intact. For instance, if you sold a home in Hamilton for $504,000 and moved to Shelter Cove, you could take out a mortgage for $184,000, and then invest the proceeds from the sale of your home and have an average annual return of just over $31,000. After paying the mortgage, leasehold fees, taxes and maintenance fee, you’d be ahead by more than $13,000 per year. Visit the Shelter Cove Sales Office for accurate facts and figures as it relates to your particular scenario. n

WINDFALL AT BLUE MOUNTAIN Mountain homes worthy of your consideration

t Blue Mountain, which is one of Ontario’s favourite four-season playgrounds, Georgian International introduces their award-winning Windfall community. This lifestyle-oriented neighbourhood is now in its second phase with a wide selection of detached and semi-detached homes. The extensive nature preserve, along with trails located in the community, are especially appealing to both families and active adults. Located on 148 acres, this master-planned, resort-style community will be like no other. Windfall is situated close to the slopes of Orchards at Blue, and just steps away from the shops, cafes and services offered in the village. Distinctive architecture fuses eco-friendly, modern features with romantic Georgian Bay-style chalet designs. Bungalows, bungalows with a loft and twostorey designs range from 1,361 to 2,874 square feet, and start from $405,990. The homes are segmented into captivating neighbourhoods, and one-third of the 148 acres has been dedicated to forested parks, a trail system, wetland preservation areas and a nature corridor. Lifestyle features include a year-round community social house called The Shed, and the world-class Scandinavian Spa is located next door. Due to its proximity to the GTA, both Collingwood and the Blue Mountains are popular destinations for weekend retreats, holidays and planting roots for retirement. The magnificent natural surroundings, combined with countless recreational activities like skiing, swimming, hiking, biking, boating and golfing, make the area simply irresistible.

MODEL HOMES NOW OPEN With a distinctive blend of old and new styling, the exterior facades complement the Blue Mountain setting. The 1,574-square-foot, three-bedroom, semidetached Crawford model includes an open-concept kitchen, dining and great room. A majestic fireplace is reminiscent of those found in cabins, cottages and chalets of an earlier era. Contemporary finishes include stainless steel kitchen appliances, granite countertops and inviting furnishings. The 2,515-square-foot detached Churchill model features four bedrooms, a private dining room, and an open-concept kitchen and great room. [THE FRIDGE WHISPERER]

The easiest pot

pies – ever

With this method, you’ll have homemade pot pies on the table in about half an hour. You’ll need a microwave and an 8-cup microwavable bowl. Switch out the chicken with leftover turkey after Thanksgiving, or go vegetarian and use vegetable stock to make the gravy. This recipe is not only easy, but versatile.

Individual Chicken Pot Pies (SERVES 4)

• Preheat oven to 375F. Line a rimmed baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.

• In a large mixing bowl, add potatoes and set aside. • Coat four 1-cup ovenproof ramekins with vegetable spray and set on prepared baking sheet. • In an 8-cup microwavable bowl, add stock, cream and chicken, cover and cook in microwave on high setting for

5 minutes. Then stir in onion, red pepper, pea and carrot medley, thyme, rosemary and sage, cover again and cook for 2 minutes more.

• Using a slotted spoon, transfer chickenvegetable mixture to bowl with potatoes and toss gently to combine. Set aside. • Whisk cornstarch mixture into cooking liquid, place back in the microwave, and cook on high until gravy thickens – about 2 minutes – enough to coat the back of a wooden spoon.

• Gently remove frozen tart shells from aluminum cups and place bottom-sideup on top of pot pies, let rest 2 minutes to allow pastry to thaw slightly, then gently push pastry down to cover filling. • Bake pot pies in preheated oven until heated throughout and crust is golden – about 15 minutes. Serve immediately. Psst. No ramekins on hand? Grease an 8-inch glass baking dish, add filling, top with tart shells and bake according to recipe.

• Fold gravy into chicken-vegetablepotato mixture, then divide filling into prepared ramekins. Deb Rankine is the author of the popular The Fridge Whisperer cookbook series.
