Parent by mistake. However, it’s quite likely that over the course of your life you’ve spent a great deal of time either preparing to head off to school, yourself, or waving goodbye to your little ones as they boarded the bus for the first day, and, later still, shedding more than a few tears as your grown children packed to go away to college or university at this time of year. As the dog days of summer start to wind down and anxieties start to rise, advertisements for the best deals on binders, pens, markers and knapsacks bombard us. Today, the knapsack would need to accommodate a computer and a cell phone, but are those cumbersome binders with loose-leaf, three-hole punched paper still on the supply list? They would start off as fresh-faced as our little cherubs did on the first day of school, but they’d end up with torn pages hanging out, or shoved back in with white sticky reinforcements around the ripped culprits. I always had the best of intentions at the beginning of the school year with colour-coded notebooks and freshly sharpened pencils, as well as a commitment to improved penmanship, and keeping it all neat and organized. But sadly, it was short-lived. Still, it’s that eternal hope of starting afresh that we often look forward to in September. Many consider it to be the unofficial start of the year. After the lazy, crazy days of summer it’s historically been a time when we get back on track – school and work settle us into a routine. If retired, many of us are more apt to join a group, gym or club, or use the school year time-frame to get involved with volunteer work and take a long-desired course of our choosing. I’m off to school, but by the time that this issue of Active Life comes out, I will have returned from the University of Oxford. I’m taking a week-long course called: A Woman’s Work: the Novel and the Working Woman. Participants stay in the residences at Christ Church, and eat their meals in the great hall. I’m not sure I’ll feel as magical as Harry Potter, but that, in itself, is sure to be a charmed experience. In the meantime, we have lots of inspiration to fire up your imagination with new decorating ideas, destinations and educational advice from our experts. In her article on home libraries, Jane Lockhart quotes Marcus Tullius Cicero. I’ll leave you with another one of his: “Life without learning is death.”

[FINANCE]

MAKE A PLAN AND MAP OUT YOUR

T

here’s an old saying – if you fail to plan, you plan to fail. When it comes to your finances, this is particularly true. A recent poll, conducted by CIBC, surveyed Canadians with household incomes above $100,000. Out of the study group, close to half of the participants didn’t have a financial plan in place – nothing detailed that was set out as to how they planned to reach their goals. By not having a financial plan means that there’s no emergency fund, no nest egg – no extra money at all. This lack of planning could mean financial ruin for many. All it takes is an unpredictable hiccup, like a temporary job loss, a family emergency or a major house repair to send many bank accounts deep into the red. It may seem daunting to come up with a financial plan, but it’s as simple as writing down your personal goals and financial needs, as well as your priorities as it relates to income, and expenses like taxes, mortgages, education needs, insurance, and retirement and estate planning, etc. When you see it in black and white, you’ll feel confident in your ability to manage unexpected changes.

BUDGETING VS. FINANCIAL PLANNING

While budgeting is an important part of financial planning, it doesn’t reflect your long-term plan. List your goals in five-year increments – 5-10-15 years. If you’re approaching retirement age, assess your retirement fund and, if necessary, take steps to improve it.

12

P12finance.indd 12

ACTIVE LIFE

By setting out your short- and longterm goals, mapping out a route as to how you’re going to get there will become much clearer.

EMERGENCY FUNDS

Bigger is better when it comes to the monies set aside for emergencies. The recommended amount is three months worth of living expenses in case of a job loss or unpaid leave. This fund doesn’t necessarily reflect three months of salary, but represents what you spend on average over a three-month period. Such expenses would include your rent or mortgage payment, utility costs, transportation, groceries, incidentals, membership fees, etc. But don’t stop at three months. If you can afford to beef up your emergency fund, do it. My recommendation is to save 15 per cent of each pay cheque and apply it to this fund.

TRACK YOUR EXPENSES

To really get a handle on what you spend each month, write down every penny that goes out of your account. Not only do you track your purchases, but it highlights areas where you may be spending too much.

DEBT IS THE BIGGEST OBSTACLE

No matter how well you map out your goals, you are bound to hit a roadblock if you are saddled with large debt payments. A healthy financial plan includes a path to becoming debt free. Aside from your mortgage debt, what other debts are you carrying? Credit cards? Lines

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

By not having a financial plan means that there’s no emergency fund, no nest egg – no extra money at all. of credit? Have you borrowed from a friend or family member? The money that you owe is costing you a lot. Tally up your debt, and then come up with a plan to tackle it. If you find that it’s unmanageable, start by working on your highest debt first and get help from a debt management service.

IT’S A JOURNEY

You’re setting yourself up for success if you have a financial plan; however, it’s not a one-time exercise. Check your financial progress every six months, and adjust your savings and investments accordingly. Seek professional advice from financial and tax advisors, or get yourself a money coach. These type of services are often money well spent. n Rubina Ahmed-Haq holds a CSC designation, is the finance editor for Home Publishing Group, and appears in Condo Life, on CBC Radio, CBC News Network, CTV Your Morning, Global Toronto ratesupermarket. ca and debt.ca. [SIMPLY TECH]

AUDIO ENHANCEMENT

for your videos

T

ravelling can be cumbersome at the best of times, but with extra add-on costs for luggage, etc., it’s no wonder people want to travel lighter and are leaving their bulky video cameras at home. And with smartphones, like the Apple iPhone 7 with Google Pixel that’s capable of shooting 4K or Ultra HD video, capturing video has never been so easy. It’s hard to dispute the quality of the image, but what often suffers is the accompanying audio. While there’s a microphone on the phone, there’s often too much distance between you and what you’re recording, so ambient noise is also picked up. Think about the following scenarios. You’re at a noisy airport trying to record a family send-off, or you’re at the beach trying to capture your grandchildren playing in the waves. Their little voices are going to be muffled by the sounds of the wind and the water. There’s a low-cost solution for this problem, and the answer is the iRig Mic Lav by IK Multimedia. It’s a highquality omnidirectional condenser lavalier (lav) microphone that clips on to your clothing and plugs directly into the headset of your smartphone. The mic comes with a fully adjustable mounting clip to ensure that it’s positioned in the right place, along with a foam windshield to filter out noise from the elements. With a lav mic, the audio pick-up is always just a few inches from your mouth. With a five-foot-long cable, you can use iRig Mic Lav to record from a distance, or even if you’re shooting a selfie.

16

ACTIVE LIFE

BY GREG GAZIN

With a lav mic, the audio pick-up is always just a few inches from your mouth.

The iRig Mic Lav’s mic cable has a dual-purpose jack. It allows you to monitor what’s passing through the mic and daisy chain, along with an additional mic if you want to record two people – features you wouldn’t expect on a typical lav mic. The first feature allows you to plug in a pair of earbuds or headphones, so that whoever is standing behind the camera can hear exactly what’s passing through the mic. Not only will they see what’s being recorded, but they can hear it as well. If the background noise is still too loud due to the level of the person’s voice, you can reposition the shot to accommodate the surrounding environment.

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

The second feature is handy if you have more than one iRig Mic Lav. Toggle the switch on the jack of the first mic to ‘input’, and you can connect them together and route the sound from both mics to your phone. This is ideal when you’re recording an interview, or a conversation with more than one person. The iRig Mic Lav offers broadcast-quality recording, so musicians, presenters, podcasters and videographers can use it for professional applications. Available through retailers like Staples, Best Buy and The Source, the iRig Mic Lav sells for approximately $60, and is also available in a twopack bundle for around $100. It comes with a zip-up carry case, and can be slipped into a pocket or purse. In order to enhance the audio quality of your holiday videos, and when you’re recording messages to the kids and grandkids, it’s a handy gadget to have. n Greg Gazin (a.k.a The Gadget Guy and Gadget Greg) is a syndicated tech columnist, blogger, podcaster (host and producer), speaker and author. Acting is in his blood

Photography, Jake Martella

BY CECE M. SCOTT

Just as I am about to knock on the white door of Ken Welsh’s country home, my eyes spot a sign that epitomizes his wry sense of humour – Out of my mind. Back in five minutes. At the age of 75, Welsh’s career has spanned a half century. He’s played countless roles, onstage and on screen, and is the recipient of many awards, including five Geminis, a Genie for the best supporting actor in Margaret’s Museum, the Earle Grey Lifetime Achievement Award, and in 2004 Welsh received the Order of Canada. orn and raised in Edmonton, Welsh graduated from the University of Alberta with a degree in drama, and then attended Montreal’s National Theatre School. Not many actors can claim that they spent the first seven years of their career at the Stratford Festival. Following this stint, Welsh left in 1973 and went on to appear at the Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis, the Goodman Theatre in Chicago and then spent many years on Broadway.

(CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT)

Corrine Farago, (Devon’s mother), Ken and Devon, 1988. Cyrano de Bergerac, 1980, Goodman Theatre, Chicago. Paul Benedict, Ken Welsh, Kathy Bates, Terrence McNally, Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune, 1988. Doctor Watson in The Hound of the Baskervilles, TV movie, 2000.

At the age of 26, while at Stratford, Welsh was cast as Hamlet. Other plum roles include starring in Piaf on Broadway, and the 1987 production of Frankie and Johnny in the Clair de Lune with Kathy Bates. Touted as one of the hardest working actors in Canada, Welsh wrote and performed the celebrated off-Broadway cabaret musical Standup Shakespeare. “My favourite characters are ones that have heart and play to a complicated range of emotions. I like to find the soul of the character, where the sensitivities lie,” says Welsh. “Humour is definitely an important element in any role I play. If you can’t have a good laugh, what’s the point? I laugh out loud to myself all the time – of course that could be senility.” In 1989, Welsh’s performance in Love and Hate: The Story of Colin and Joanne Thatcher, about a former Alberta rancher and politician who is convicted of killing his wife, won him a Gemini.

Welsh’s favourite Hollywood movies were all made in Canada, and include Loyalties, 1987; Margaret’s Museum with Helena Bonham Carter in 1995; and a hilarious flick about opera and hockey with Robbie Coltrane called Perfectly Normal, 1991. A compilation of Welsh’s work wouldn’t be complete without highlighting one of his favourite parts, the villainous Windom Earle in the 1980s hit series Twin Peaks. “Windom was one of my favourite television roles,” says Welsh. “People remember the character because he was so evil.” During his illustrious career, Welsh has performed alongside many well-known actors, but especially enjoyed working with Stockard Channing, Kathy Bates, Olympia Dukakis, Glenn Close, Meryl Streep and the late Ron Silver. In his 50s and 60s Welsh says that he was still in top form when it came to memorizing his lines, but concedes that he’s finding it a bit more challenging in his 70s. When it comes to physical endurance on stage, he says that it hasn’t been a problem, because the audience’s energy gives him the adrenaline charge that he thrives on to outperform himself. “There aren’t as many roles available for actors my age, and what roles do come up are being filled quickly. Guys my age are dying off, but not quick enough,” says Welsh drolly. “Whenever I am asked, I will act. I just did an episode of The Blacklist in New York. It really only took me a couple of days to learn the lines.” Welsh is also committed to helping out young directors, and those who are up and coming – often appearing in independent films for very little gratuity.

After living in New York for 12 years, a small community appealed to Welsh. “My neighbours are all really great people. I like watching the kids play as the generations roll out. Certainly, I enjoy being a part of it all. I read poetry with the choir and sometimes I perform Shakespeare,” says Welsh. “In fact, ever since 1974 when I was in Chicago, I’ve done exclusive Shakespearean performances. I have a big sign that has 30 characters on it and I let the audience choose. Sometimes I do a soliloquy. Sometimes I do the entire first scene with all the characters in it.” Welsh is an avid gardener and has planted more than one hundred trees of assorted varieties on his pastoral property. This year, his vegetable garden is expected

The pride and joy of Welsh’s life is his son Devon, now 28. With his then wife, Corinne Farago, they moved to the rural Ontario property where he has lived for the last 28 years. It was here that he brought up his son, often on his own.

The minute I got on stage and got a few laughs, I knew that acting was my destiny. – Ken Welsh to yield beans, potatoes tomatoes, asparagus, broccoli and herbs. “I have always loved gardening,” says Welsh. “I need to have things growing around me.”

Welsh has no plans on slowing down. Part of his ongoing regime includes going to the gym on a regular basis, walking 5,000 steps a day, practicing yoga, eating properly and meditating. “I’m in pretty good shape for a guy my age. I don’t ever plan to quit.” He also has a few things that he still wants to check off of his bucket list, which have to do with singing and playing the trumpet. “When people have a birthday, I play Happy Birthday on my trumpet. It’s become a tradition,” says Welsh with that mischievous twinkle in his eye. Welsh would love to make an album of jazz songs that feature the melodies of his favourite musical icons like Frank Sinatra, Tony Bennett and Rosemary Clooney. At the top of his list would be the opportunity to sing the anthems at a major league baseball game. “I love sports and I go to the batting cage. And, yes, I hit the ball. I’ve still got it.” Good health, good friends and, in particular, his son, Devon, are the things that Welsh cherishes. Devon is a musician and currently lives in Montreal. His hit song, Downtown, won him a Juno. Regular visits, which include the odd Raptors’ game, keep them connected. “I love my son very much. We maintain close contact and I see him as often as I can. He has a beautiful voice and works very hard. He is a lovely man,” says Welsh in his melodious Shakespearean cadence.

Welsh appreciates all that life has bestowed upon him and spends no time bemoaning his youth. “I don’t miss anything about my youth – youth was youth. I did a lot when I was young, so there is nothing to regret. My youth was fabulous, but I certainly enjoy what I do now.” In one of his more serious moments, Welsh says that spirituality is a key component in his life. “It gives a great respect as to why we are here. I’m not a philosopher – I just live life.”

Grief counselling for kids and teens

THE BIRTH OF CAMP ERIN

In honour of Erin Metcalf, major league baseball pitcher, Jamie Moyer, and his wife Karen, founded Camp Erin – a bereavement camp for kids and teens. The Moyers met Erin when she was 15 through the Make-A-Wish Foundation. They were so inspired by Erin’s courage and her passion to help other children, that they supported the grief camp as a tribute to Erin after her passing at the age of 17.

24

ACTIVE LIFE

Camp Erin Toronto is fully funded by sponsors and donations, and is open to children between the ages of six to 17 who have lost an immediate family member or a custodial caregiver through death. At no cost to the family, kids are referred to the program and chosen from a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds.

RITUALS AND REMEMBERING

Of the 54 Camp Erin’s, four of them are located in Canada. As part of the therapeutic portion of the programming, the camp embraces grief rituals, such as creating a memory board compiled of pictures of the person who died. The campers choose a grief activity during grief rotation – providing them an opportunity to help process grief. During ‘Ask the Doctor’ sessions, campers can ask anony-

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

mous questions about what they are experiencing as a result of their loss. During the camp luminary ceremony, campers light a candle and spend time in remembrance.

ACKNOWLEDGING EMOTIONS

At Camp Erin, they want the children to know that they are not alone in their grief, and that their feelings are perfectly normal. For some campers, it’s their first out-of-thecity experience. Over three days they get to be with, and relate to, other kids. Often strong bonds are formed as a result of their losses. Most importantly, these young people are equipped with a tool box to help them to cope with their grief and to work through their emotions. “We strongly believe that the Camp Erin experience is life-changing,” says Lysa Toye, clinical director Camp Erin Toronto, Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre. Post-camp care, counselling and support services are provided by Dr. Jay Children’s Grief Centre, The Moyer Foundation and community partner agencies. If you know of a child who’s suffering, and would like information on how to send a kid to camp, visit drjaychildrensgriefcentre.ca. n myhomepage.ca/activelife

othing tugs at our heart strings quite like seeing a child in physical, or emotional, pain. It was an unbearable parenting philosophy, but generations ago the feelings of children were often dismissed – they were to be seen and not heard. All it takes is something to trigger our own memory to take us back to childhood, and to what may have been a tragic event. It’s difficult not to be affected by the commercial where the young boy drops his glass of milk in slow-motion at the realization that his father isn’t coming home. Perhaps you lost a loved one to illness or an accident, and as a shy child you didn’t know how to express yourself. Living with emotional pain is something that many of us never get over.

HOUSE CALLS – WHERE EXPERTS ANSWER QUESTIONS ON BEAUTY, HEALTH AND WELLNESS.

In this issue, Grace Pastore, sales and marketing manager of Verve Senior Living, discusses…

What to look for in a

retirement residence

Q

My husband and I are both in our 70s, but are very young at heart, healthy, active and extremely independent. We plan to sell our family home in the near future and hope to settle in a place where we can stay as we age. My husband feels that it is too early to live in a senior’s residence. What are the benefits of moving into a retirement residence at our age, and what should we look for?

A

There are many things to consider when looking for that special place that will meet all the requirements that both you, and your husband, are looking for.

Health & Wellness

We all want to remain in good health, and feel our best – physically, mentally and socially. At Evergreen Retirement, a highly-skilled group of healthcare professionals are available 24/7 – if required.

Safety & Security

At Evergreen Retirement, our 24-hour concierge and 24-hour emergency response system are just the beginning. All of our staff are trained in specific safety and security procedures. You are surrounded by people who genuinely care about your well-being and peace of mind.

Transportation to medical appointments and shopping excursions, as well as trips to Stratford, the Shaw Festival, Ripley’s Aquarium, boat cruises, etc., are all chauffeured by Evergreen’s personal van/bus driver.

Amenities

There are no shortage of things to do at Evergreen Retirement to keep you stimulated and having fun. Get a team together for the on-site, five-pin bowling alley, play a game of bridge, join a walking club, exercise in the pool, or treat yourself to a spa day at Sterling Silver Spa & Salon. As the day winds down, relax with friends for a tea or coffee in our cafe, or enjoy a cocktail during happy hour in Evergreen’s Windows Bar, while listening to live music.

Location

ELECTRIC MUSCLE

Stimulation Less stress, more strength BY AGNES RAMSAY

Ongoing studies show that building muscle is very important for your overall health and wellness. However, physical limitations, an injury, or the lack of time that it takes to build muscle, may contribute to this practice not being high on your priority list.

28

ACTIVE LIFE

HOW IT WORKS

EMS, or electromyostimulation, is the elicitation of muscle contraction using electric impulses. In the 70s, the Russians used EMS technology on their athletes to help them to achieve enhanced strength and endurance. Athletes around the world often use EMS for training. The training that I took involves wearing an ‘esuit’, which looks like something between a swat jacket and a paratrooper outfit. The esuit is then connected to the main ‘brain’, and an experienced trainer titrates all the individual muscle levels. I started with a 20-minute, full body workout once a week. It didn’t take long before I felt, and saw, results. Now more than two years later, the excruciating pain that I used to have in my lower back is a distant memory. I now do it once or twice a week, and at 56 years old, I feel amazing. n

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

STRENGTH TRAINING

Benefits

◆ More muscle is equated with a

higher metabolism, which helps to burn more calories, even at rest. ◆ Increased muscle, increases

bone density. ◆ Strong muscles make it easier

to perform daily tasks. ◆ Overall muscle tone helps to

prevent injuries by improving the mechanics of the body. ◆ Weight training is a mood elevator. ◆ More muscle increases the human

growth hormone, which helps to keep you feeling younger.

hen my doctor informed me that I have degeneration in my neck and lower back, she added, “you aren’t getting any younger.” I’ve lifted weights for most of my life, but I was now experiencing pain and numbness in my hands. And, to be honest, I was getting somewhat tired of it. As my doctor so succinctly pointed out to me, my chronological age was increasing, which meant that my body wasn’t responding like it used to. I was introduced to whole body Electric Muscle Stimulation training (EMS) through a client of mine. I learned that EMS was often used for rehabilitation purposes in physiotherapy in the prevention of disuse muscle atrophy, which can occur after musculoskeletal injuries, such as damage to bones, joints, muscles, ligaments and tendons. The technology for EMS has been fine-tuned over the years, and is now safe, comfortable and user-friendly. When you think about it, our own nervous systems run on electrical impulses. EMS is something that most people can utilize, and it doesn’t put any stress on the joints or the spine. The practice has been more widely used in Europe over the past 10 years, and they are reporting wonderful success stories.

Even in the bustling city of Bangkok, consider visiting lesser-known temples, instead of the Grand Palace or Wat Pho (where the 46 metre long reclining Buddha lies) to stave off throngs of tourists. Take a tuk-tuk (three-wheeled motorcycle taxi) to Wat Ratchabophit or Wat Suthat to see impressive gold-leafed Buddhas, magnificent wall murals, pagodas and sweeping ceramic tiled roofs. At nearby Talad Trok Mo morning market, mingle with the locals and stroll the narrow alleyways

where vendors are set up in front of crumbling shops. Here you can browse the fresh produce, meats and fascinating (often unrecognizable) food items. Take the time to watch flower vendors skillfully weave jasmine into beautiful, aromatic Thai garlands, which are worn on the wrist or hung over the rear view mirror in taxis for good luck. This is a good place to try some traditional street food like pad prik khing (a red curry with meat and long beans), or khanom buang (sweet Thai crepes). With a long-standing tourist industry, Thailand is often described as a magical place to visit. It is the number one destination in southeast Asia, and attracts millions of visitors each year. Combined with a population of more than 68 million, the multitude of people may seem daunting, but there are lots of places you can visit to avoid the crowds.

connects with a maze of centuries-old canals. Hop aboard one of the local water taxis (traditional long-tailed boats) for a charming cruise down Bangkok Noi Canal, where you will see traditional stilted shacks mingled with beautiful temples, factories and upscale homes. Ask the driver to stop in front of the temple to feed the catfish, where women sell bags of stale bread (the catfish are protected here). If you’re lucky you’ll spot large monitor lizards sunning themselves on shore.

Natural Chiang Mai

Nestled amidst forested mountains, Thailand’s northern capital has a more rural, laid back feel. There are plenty of temples to see, but it’s also a great place to get in touch with Thailand’s natural side. Within a short jaunt from the city, you’ll experience lush green countryside, rainforest eco-reserves and Patara – an ethical elephant farm and rescue facility. At Patara, you will be assigned your own elephant for the day, and taught how to bathe, feed and ride it, as a keeper would. Bordered by Myanmar and Laos, not only is the climate cooler in Chaing Mai, but the food is less spicy on the tongue than in other parts of Thailand. An example of this is their most popular street food khao soi – a Burmese-influenced, rich noodle soup with seasonings and chunks of meat, topped with crispy noodles. Thai massage is available everywhere and is very affordable. Indulge in a luxurious treatment at CHI – the spa at Shangri-La Hotel. Your masseuse will lead you down small pathways, over bridges and alongside ponds to your own private hut where you will be pampered, starting off with a salt foot scrub in rose-petal water.

With more than 100 islands nearby, the beach resort town of Krabi, located on the Andaman coastline, is the perfect place for island hopping. Here, the vivid turquoise ocean is dotted with dramatic karsts (limestone formations rising out of the water) and blanketed with emerald green foliage. It’s hard to capture a pictorial reference, even in your imagination. A 10-minute boat ride through the mangroves will take you to Ban Ko Klang island, which is a predominately Muslim fishing community. Local initiatives here include the farming of a special sang yod rice (violet/reddish in colour) and batik-making to help to sustain the local economy. Without cars on the island, you’ll have to rely on a tuk-tuk for a tour of the tiny villages, where you’re likely to see water buffalos and goats grazing in expansive fields along the way. Take note of the song birds that hang in cages outside of each home – the more birds, the higher the family status. Before you leave, make sure you enjoy a fresh fish lunch in the peaceful ambiance of one of the rustic floating restaurants.

army in 1767. A guided bicycle tour is a great way to visit the many archaeological ruins of Buddhist monasteries and prangs (reliquary towers), which point to how majestic this city once was. After the ride, reward yourself with a bag of sai mai (threads of sweet, colourful cotton candy), which are sold everywhere on the streets. Although Thailand is smaller in size than the the province of Alberta, there are so many amazing things to see and do, you’ll be planning your return trip before you even arrive home. n

FLY FISHING I

have lasting memories of the 1992 movie A River Runs Through It, and I can honestly say that it has nothing to do with Brad Pitt. Images from the movie stayed with me because of the beautiful fly fishing scenes. And, in 1993, the academy agreed with me and awarded it an Oscar for best cinematography. My daughter was a rower when she was in university. For some reason I equate the timing and fluidity of fly fishing with the choreographic nature A box of trout candy.

of rowing – watching a crew of eight sweeping their oars in perfect unison. Fly fishing is all about the fluidity of the waves (referred to as loops) as the line unfurls during the cast. Unlike other casting methods, when you’re fly fishing you’re casting the line rather than the lure. Apparently there’s a great amount of physics involved in performing the proper cast, but photographer, fly angler and co-host on So Fly Podcast, Gabriel Bizeau, says that you can

liken it to mastering a perfect stroke when playing golf – it takes a lot of practice. During the off-season, you might find Bizeau honing his technique in an empty field. “Consistency is the main skill – you have to be precise. You want to make your loop as small as possible when you’re swinging. If you deviate from your path with your arm, you get tangled and that’s when you start swearing,” laughs Bizeau. “It’s not as peaceful as everyone

[TRAVEL] thinks. It’s about keeping focused – it’s a mind game.” Bizeau started fly fishing with his father at a young age. He attended a hunting and fishing club in his home town in Quebec when he was around the age of five, and in the winter he took fly tying classes. Tying flies is an art form that anglers have been trying to perfect for hundreds of years. Unlike other types of fishing where you drop a lure into the water and a bobber signals that you have a fish, fly fishing is about enticing the fish to strike (bite the fly). Artificial flies are made by fastening hair, fur, feathers and other natural (or synthetic) materials onto a hook. Flies are tied in different sizes, colours and patterns to resemble local terrestrial and aquatic insects, baitfish or other prey that are attractive to the species of fish that you’re trying to target. “It’s a very personal thing, but you’re trying to replicate, and animate, a fly, so that it looks alive to the fish,” says Bizeau. “You can work from old patterns or invent your own flies. When I’m making flies, I’m always thinking about how it’s going to swim. Will it float well? And what kind of fish can I catch with it?” Like many anglers, Bizeau is adamant about preserving our resources, and is strictly catch and release. The barb on the hook is flattened so that it’s easier to remove from the fish and does less damage. The sport of fly fishing is becoming increasingly popular, and Bizeau admits that, for him, it’s become an obsession. “When I’m tying flies in the winter, I’m dreaming of going fly fishing in the summer. You have to stay focused. If you’re not ready and you lose a fish – it’s the worst.” Southern Ontario is packed with tributaries, streams, rivers and lakes with wonderful fly fishing opportunities. For catching giant brown trout Bizeau suggests the upper Credit River. The lower Grand River is great for largemouth bass. And for a feisty fight (one of Bizeau’s favourites), Lake Ontario is teaming with carp. ■

Hamilton

Founded in 1816, Hamilton has experienced an epoch-making revitalization over the past few years. The city is becoming known for its vibrant arts community, tasty culinary destinations and stillaffordable housing. An equidistant hour’s drive from Toronto or Niagara Falls, Hamilton is Canada’s ninth largest municipality, and Ontario’s third. With leafy streets and epic architecture, Hamilton offers quirky neighbourhoods and historical charm. CULTURAL CONSIDERATIONS

James Street North is at the centre of Hamilton’s developing arts’ scene, along with King William Street, Locke Street and King Street. James Street North has a wide selection of new eateries to choose from, including Jack & Lois, which was mentioned on You Gotta Eat Here, E-Talk and in The Huffington Post, plus Charred, Mesa and the health-conscious Green Bar. Funky boutiques offer everything from party ware to jewellery and fashions from local designers. Nearby Ottawa Street captures Hamilton’s eclectic spirit with dozens and dozens of storefronts that include D.Y.I. shops, fabrics, antiques, collectibles and restaurants. For great shopping and dining, visit Gore Park in the city’s downtown core. Take some time out on a park bench to smell the roses while admiring the stately statues of Queen Victoria and Sir John A. Macdonald. The Art Gallery of Hamilton has been an epicentre for the arts for more than 100 years, and is Ontario’s third largest public gallery. The McMaster

Museum of Art (MMA) was founded in 1967 at McMaster University, and houses more than 7,000 pieces of art. Hamilton’s live theatre scene offers diverse performances at Theatre Aquarius, and at smaller companies like the Players’ Guild of Hamilton and Hamilton Theatre Inc.

DAY-TRIPPING

Hamilton’s historical attractions include the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum, the HMCS Haida National Historic Site (Canada’s most famous Tribal Class warship) and Dundurn – a National Historic Site built in 1835. Now a museum, the castle was the former residence of Sir Allan Napier MacNab, Prime Minister of Upper Canada, 1854 to 1856. The current Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, is the museum’s patron, and is the great, great, great granddaughter of MacNab. Other noted attractions include the Canadian Football Hall of Fame, (Michael ‘Pinball’ Clemons is a member), the African Lion Safari Park and the Cathedral of Christ the King.

THE GREAT OUTDOORS

Residents and visitors can cycle along Hamilton’s 7.5 kilometres of waterfront trails through the 40-acre Bayfront Park, which includes an outdoor skating rink and soon-tobe-refurbished public marina, and connects to the Royal Botanical Gardens. The Hamilton Escarpment offers spectacular views of the city and of the Hamilton Harbour. Hamilton, and the surrounding area, boasts more than 100 waterfalls. Webster’s Falls is located in the Spencer George/Webster’s Falls Conservation Area, and is considered Hamilton's gem. Enjoy a self-guided walk along the well-maintained trails that provide access to a host of waterfalls along the Niagara Escarpment and Bruce Trail. Trekkers can also hike the King’s Forest Waterfall Walk to Albion Falls, the Devil’s Punchbowl Battlefield Creek Walk and the scenic Iroquoia Walk, among others. Picturesque cycling routes include the Escarpment Rail Trail, Dofasco Trail Loop, the Hamilton-Brantford Rail Trail and the Chedoke Rail Trail.

VALLEY TOWN

The picturesque town of Dundas is located close by, and features 19th century buildings, sophisticated boutiques and food emporiums. Nicknamed the Valley Town because of its location at the bottom of the Niagara Escarpment on the western edge of Lake Ontario, Dundas is a short 20-minute drive from Hamilton.

At the centre of the Golden Horseshoe is Burlington. This city is ideally situated between Toronto and Niagara, and offers the best of all worlds. It's home to 115 parks and 200 annual events. For five years in a row, Burlington was named the best mid-sized city in Canada, as well as Ontario's second best city to live in by MoneySense, 2017. YEAR-ROUND HIGHLIGHTS

Seasonal changes in Burlington are celebrated with flair. In the early spring, Maple Festivals are popular at the Bronte Creek Provincial Park and Conservation Halton. Tulips and lilacs are the first to bloom at the Royal Botanical Gardens, and the return of the cherry blossoms are always a highlight at Spencer Smith Park. Come summer, there are a plethora of ways to stay active, including hiking on the many trails, cycling along the waterfront, or casting a line and picnicking at one of the many

parks in the area. Farmers’ markets are plentiful as are open-air patios for dining al fresco. In June, the Sound of Music Festival kicks off and continues throughout the summer months. Canada’s Largest Ribfest is held on Labour Day weekend at Spencer Smith Park, and is a great way to close out the summer. Fall into Nature celebrates the changing colours along the escarpment and throughout the region. Autumn festivals include the Pumpkins to Pastries Trail and the Harvest Festival.

HOME LIBRARIES

BY JANE LOCKHART

M

arcus Tullius Cicero was a Roman politician and lawyer who served as consul in the year 63 BC. He was considered to be one of Rome’s greatest orators and prose stylists. While picture writing could possibly date back to 6600 BC, scholars still debate the advent of literary writing to approximately the 23rd or 24th centuries BC. Since this time, humans have accrued written works. From important documents to fictional stories, collected works were housed in libraries – the repository of information. If you remember studying penmanship in school, manual typewriters and the fresh smell of photostat copies, you probably reached adulthood before personal devices and computers were essential

appendages. Instead, you relied on public libraries to learn about the world, and chances are you could only check three books out at a time. Today we are firmly planted in the information age, and anything we want to research is available at our fingertips. The online world can virtually take us to anywhere that we want to go – at any time. Knowledge sits in a cloud waiting to be accessed. For many there is a tug-pull of resistance. Book lovers enjoy the tactile sense of holding a book in their hands. Some claim that we absorb more, retain it for longer and have a visceral reaction to words that are printed in books. Even though those same words may now appear on a screen, we still want our books close by. Whether its a single shelf,

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

a bookcase on a wall, or an entire room full of books, our home libraries are a way to hold on to the stories that shape us. Amazon recently opened its first-ever bricks and mortar location, where all the book covers face out on the shelves. It’s a great idea if you have the space, as we often remember the author and a book’s title by having a visual reference. You don’t have to be a librarian and use the Dewey Decimal System to classify the books in your home library. It’s all about personal choice. You may choose to group your books by a theme or author, or perhaps by hard and soft covers. Some people prefer to sort by spine colour, weight or the height of the book depending upon the height of the shelf. myhomepage.ca/activelife

There’s nothing like curling up with a good book in your best-loved chair or a cosy daybed. If it’s a sunny spot, ensure that your books are protected from direct sunlight, as they can fade and deteriorate over time. Nooks and crannies are often favoured spots, so consider a loft space, a den, a bedroom or a home office for a library location. In the Victorian era, library bookcases enveloped a room, reached the ceiling and required ladders to reach the top rows. This type of look is making a comeback with soaring, custom-made shelving. Bookcases are becoming statement pieces, whether intricately carved in deep wood tones, sleek open shelving or shelves behind glass, there’s nothing like a wall of books to make a well-read homeowner feel right at home. ■

One-colour DECORATING

“The coloured items need to be the same depth of intensity in order to achieve a graphic look.” – Cobi Ladner

or some people, choosing a colour palette when designing a new room can cause them to break out in hives. For others, it’s the best part of decorating. Your colour choices are something that you’re going to have to live with for awhile, so you want them to be pleasing on all levels. If you find yourself in the stressful category, I have a simple solution – choose just one colour. It’s one of the easiest ways to design a room, and get a polished, designer look without having to colour coordinate. Although I call it one-colour decorating, there is a second element – white. With only one colour in a room, the absence of colour actually acts as a colour to the eye. So if you choose shades of green, you’re going to pair it with white, or blue with white, or even black with white – you get the picture. To orchestrate this concept, there are a few tricks. The coloured

48

BY COBI LADNER

ACTIVE LIFE

items need to be the same depth of intensity in order to achieve a graphic look. They can be different shades, but they need to be of equal strength. Using different tones of one colour in a room is another great look, but it creates a softer, tonal ambiance than what I’m describing. One of the most versatile things about one-colour decorating, is that it allows you the opportunity to add an accent colour for special occasions or changing seasons with the addition of fresh flowers, fruit or textiles. For example, you could add a lime green throw, along with a bowl of green apples to a blue and white room for summer. And then come fall, you could swap it out for an orange throw and a pot of orange mums. This look is conducive to any space, but it works well in bath and powder rooms, kitchens, dining rooms, halls, porches and sunrooms. I find that many clients prefer a softer look, with more textiles and

SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER 2017

tonal values, when it comes to their bedrooms and living rooms. However, that’s not to say that you can’t use this graphic influence in any room – there are no rights and wrongs when it comes to decorating. Unless you choose a very pale colour, the look that is achieved from one-colour decorating is lively, polished, sharp and fun. When you layer colours, the objective is to create a more restful, serene environment. Designers use this technique to add punch to a room, and you’ll notice that they’ll often showcase this idea when working with hard surfaces that are found in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways. Add a one-two punch to a ho-hum room in your house by using white as the backdrop, and then adding your favourite colour. n Cobi Ladner is the Editorial Director of RENO & DECOR magazine, and the owner of Cobistyle. myhomepage.ca/activelife

f you’re thinking of building a raised bed in your yard, urban gardener Tara Nolan has the answers to all of your questions. Nolan is an authority on this subject, and with all the changes in the business of gardening over the recent years, it’s great to have a comprehensive, go-to book on this very popular topic. Early autumn is the perfect time of year to get handy and build a raised bed to plant in for this season, or in preparation for spring. There are caveats to the raisedbed phenomena. The roots of winterhardy plants are exposed to excess cold in the depth of winter. With this in mind, choose plants that are hardy in a planting zone one above

your own. For example, plant winterhardy plants that are rated for Zone Five in a Zone Six Toronto garden. Raised beds also tend to dry out more quickly than ground level beds. On the positive side, this can decrease the likelihood of over watering, which is at the root of 90 per cent of all plant problems. However, you do have to be vigilant about watering especially during hot, dry weather. Tara Nolan is a Canadian writer. Her book is a comprehensive treatise on the subject, with a third of the book dedicated to DIY raised bed projects. Raised Bed Revolution – Build It, Fill It, Plant It…Garden Anywhere is published by Cool Spring Press. n

BY MARK CULLEN

Why build a raised bed? In her book, Raised Bed Revolution – Build It, Fill It, Plant It…Garden Anywhere, Nolan dedicates 12 pages of reasons as to why you might want might to build a raised bed for your veggies and ornamentals. Here are some of my favourites. ◆ Season extension ◆ Start earlier, harvest later. The soil

in a raised bed warms up quicker come spring. If you have a glassedin structure around a raised bed, or use white Reemay cloth, you can extend the season for several weeks. ◆ Control soil quality ◆ People frequently ask me what they

should do with clay soil. They’re never happy when I advise them to dig out 30 to 40 centimetres of the clay soil and replace it with 50 to 60 centimetres of new triple mix. When you build a raised bed in your yard, you don’t have to dig down and remove the soil. Fill the raised bed with the best quality, weed-free soil that you can get your hands on. ◆ Accessibility

THE VILLAGE AT ST. ELIZABETH Resort-style living comes to Hamilton

great time was had by all at the official launch of The Village at St. Elizabeth Mills on June 30th. Perfect weather, good food, entertainment, and Canada Day celebrations enhanced the festivities. This development has been getting a great deal of buzz due to its unique concept. The Village at St. Elizabeth Mills offers a resort-style alternative for those who are looking to scale down, but not stop living life to the fullest. Located at the corner of Rymal Road West and Garth Street in Hamilton, the 114 acres will be transformed into a themed resort lifestyle community, complete with an old town square, restaurants and shops. “Residents, especially baby boomers, want fun, excitement, socialization and the opportunity to enjoy life when they downsize,” says Tony DiFruscio, president of Zest Communities. Designed by renowned Forrec Ltd., and developed by ZEST Communities, the 800 million-dollar redevelopment will set a new standard for the future of 55-plus living. The Village is expected to accommodate more than 3,000 residents, with the goal of turning what is currently a typical, adult-living complex into a themed lifestyle resort. It will be an ongoing project that will grow as the population grows, without any interruption for the existing residents. Reservations are now being accepted for Upper Mill Pond – a mid-rise building consisting of 157 suites ranging in size from 733 to 1,328 square feet. Upper Mill Pond also features luxurious amenities that will include a library/lounge with a cafe/juice bar, as well as a health club with an indoor pool, a hot tub, an exercise room, a movement studio and a spa with treatment rooms. In addition, residents have access to a large events’ room with kitchen facilities, five guest suites and a gracious

The suites at Upper Mill Pond are available through the popular market-value life lease option, similar to the existing 570 garden homes at The Village. Under this program, residents have the right to occupy their suite, and use the common facilities for their lifetime. Security of tenure and flexibility, along with the opportunity for equity appreciation are among the key reasons for choosing life lease housing. “It’s a competitive alternative to condominiums, and there's a noticeable sense of community in life lease developments that you don't often find in other 55-plus housing options,” says Gary Zock, president of the consulting firm Zock & Associates. THE ARBOUR CONDO VILLAS The Best in Adult Living comes to Peterborough

M

ason Homes recently introduced the Arbour Condo Villas in Peterborough. Located within Parklands, Mason’s master-planned community will offer a limited release of 87 homes in a quiet enclave, including Classic and Courtyard bungalows, as well as bungalows with loft designs. Recognized as a respected builder in Peterborough, Mason won the Builder of the Year and the Green Builder of the Year awards in 2016 from the Peterborough and Kawartha's Home Builders’ Association. Mason also won the 2017’s Energy Star® for New Homes Builder of the Year. The Arbour Condo Villas will be set against a backdrop of protected mature woodlands, green spaces, and will include beautiful community parks, ponds and walking trails. THE COURTYARD COLLECTION The residences of Mason’s Courtyard Villa Collection are aptly named as they feature a private, outdoor courtyard that's perfect for relaxing or entertaining, and requires minimal maintenance and upkeep. Designs in this collection feature rear-laneway, doublecar garages that provide direct access from the home via a connector, which also contains a handy mudroom, laundry room and powder room. The positioning of the garage at the the back of the home enhances the interior living space, and allows for full width porches at the front.

THE CLASSIC COLLECTION Mason Homes’ signature exterior elevations are highlighted on the Classic Collection. These home styles reflect Ontario’s rich architectural heritage. Wider lots allow for welcoming porches and an abundance of windows at the front and at the rear of the homes. So as not to impose on the front facade, the double-car garages are set back and integrated as part of the overall design. Each home style is available in a range of professionally designed, exterior colour palettes, which augment the community's charming streetscapes. THE MASON ADVANTAGE As with every new home built built by Mason, each one is Mike Holmes Certified and built to Energy Star® standards – saving you up to 20 per cent on your household energy consumption. Celebrating more than 55 years of excellence in development, design and new home construction, Mason Homes remains one of Ontario’s most successful and forward-thinking new home construction companies. The designs available at The Arbour Condo Villas are affordable and offer energy saving benefits, along with cutting-edge building materials, and popular features and finishes. n

A SENSE OF WELL-BEING Chartwell Grenadier Retirement Residence

S

ocial participation improves our quality of life, especially so as we age and our priorities change. In an interview with CBC, Heather Gilmour, Division of Health Analysis, Statistics Canada, said, “Social engagement – involvement in meaningful activities and maintaining close relationships – are components of successful aging.”

IMPROVED COGNITIVE HEALTH Improved memory may also be a benefit to those who lead an active social life, according to the American Journal of Public Health. Adults over the age of 50 were studied to determine if frequent interaction with friends affected their cognitive abilities. They concluded that social interaction had the ability to delay memory loss in older adults, theorizing that increased brain functioning, which occurs during socialization, helps the brain to remain healthy and active. BETTER EATING HABITS According to the Université de Montréal, when older adults sit down to eat with friends, they have a greater chance of consuming more. They also concluded that seniors who engage in more social activities tend to be healthier and livelier. ANDREW'S STORY Andrew moved into the Chartwell Grenadier Retirement Residence in 2011. He was born in Hungary in 1935, four years before the outbreak of World War II. Following the Hungarian Revolution against the Communist regime in 1956, he escaped via Austria and successfully

applied for immigration to Canada. After graduating from university, he enjoyed a long career as a history teacher. “Since I lived through so much history, I figured that I might as well teach the subject,” says Andrew. After living alone for many years, Andrew had an irreparable foot injury that forced him to consider moving to a retirement residence. “I wanted to find a place where I could still maintain an independent lifestyle, without having to worry about cleaning and cooking.” The Chartwell Grenadier is located in the High Park area where there’s lots to do in the immediate neighbourhood. Once a week Andrew organizes, and conducts, an hour-long music salon where residents are introduced to classical composers and their works. “I also love word and trivia games,” says Andrew. “Because they challenge my memory cells and allow me to trump fellow participants.” “Visit several locations when exploring retirement options, and find out whether the programs appeal to you” advises Andrew. “Make sure that you’re close to amenities that enable you to stay as independent as possible – and that it’s a place that also makes you feel at home.” n

FESTIVAL

F

Favourites

ilm festivals are the lotteries of cinema. Hit the right numbers and first prize is a million emotions. Bonus benefits include enough memories to last a lifetime and renewed insight into why artistic expressions so profoundly define our humanity. Now is the time to play this cinematic sensory game. Fall means movies get more serious, especially on the film festival circuit that flows from Montreal to Telluride, Toronto, New York, Vancouver, and so on, until the next snow-bound Sundance in January. This time of year means that you’ve survived the summer silly season. We desperately need some sombre second thoughts, cutting edge drama and fresh ideas. My own perspective on cinema has been nurtured and enriched throughout my 40 years of attending the Toronto International Film Festival. TIFF was originally co-founded, with a touch of arrogance and bravado, as the Festival of Festivals in 1976. I have attended every edition since year two. The sad part is that we have now seen the demise of two of the three co-founders. My beloved friend and mentor Dusty Cohl died of colon cancer in January of 2008. We lost the feisty William (Bill) Marshall in January of this year. The only survivor is Henk Van der Kolk, the quiet voice among the original troika. Life is precious. I plan to make every minute count at TIFF 2017. As for the TIFF lottery, I have won first prize repeatedly. Here are seven highlights. Note – this is not a bestof-the-fest list. Instead, the titles that I’ve chosen made an indelible personal impression.

The Big Chill (cast)

BY BRUCE KIRKLAND

12 Years a Slave (Chiwetel Ejiofor)

Betty Blue (1986) – I raved about JeanJacques Beineix’s brilliant French film, in a brief six-line capsule review, prior to TIFF that year. Beineix called me with thanks. I apologized for the brevity of my analysis. “No,” he protested happily. “You said it all in six lines.” Good lesson.

American Beauty (1999) – As a collaboration between director Sam Mendes and screenwriter Alan Ball, this Outrageous! (1977) – With Dusty Cohl sardonic, sexy and savagely satirical film as a driving force behind-the-scenes, radically changed American cinema. Richard Benner’s film became a seminal And it triggered TIFF’s now-legendary Canadian production starring irrepressible ability to launch Oscar campaigns. female impersonator Craig Russell in a Slumdog Millionaire (2008) – Not fictionalized version of himself. only is Danny Boyle’s India drama still a Outrageous! (Craig Russell)

The Bill Chill (1983) – Lawrence Kasden did not just make a film that spoke directly to me, and my own obsessions, he also introduced me to William Hurt, now a beautifully complicated friend.

marvellous experience, it reinforced the power of festival audiences. Toronto’s rapturous response gave Boyle’s opus a distribution deal and an Oscar triumph.

Antonia’s Line (1995) – Dutch director

filmmaker Steve McQueen brilliantly brought an American tragedy to vivid life at a critical time in U.S. history, although Americans obviously still have trouble learning from their mistakes. n

Marleen Gorris’ little-known masterpiece remains one of the finest, and most affecting, family dramas ever made. I cherish sharing it with friends.

12 Years a Slave (2013) – British

Film critic, Bruce Kirkland’s career spans more than four decades, working at The Toronto Star, The Ottawa Journal and for 35 years at the Toronto Sun. A life-long film buff, Bruce now shares his passion and insight with Active Life readers. bruce.kirkland@hotmail.com
