FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
LOVE KITCHENS
FOR THE OF
Whether your kitchen is in need of an upgrade or not, you can’t deny the crucial role this important room plays in a home
We look forward to hearing from you and welcome your feedback. Do you have a reno or decor question for our team of experts? Email editorial@ renoanddecor.com
I have felt the pangs of wanting a kitchen renovation so bad, I could taste it. I’ve also felt the pressure of seeing kitchen renovations take shape and wondering if I’d made the right choices. And I’ve relished the day that the cabinets could be wiped out and the dishes put back in place after three months of being in dusty boxes and us eating off of paper plates. Our kitchen was renovated over 10 years ago now, and these days I don’t think about it much other than to curse chipped cabinets and worn hardwood floors, and hope that my freezer door isn’t closing right because the ice cream container is sticking up rather than something in actual need of repair. As I said, just like the mom of the house, all that our kitchen does for us every day gets taken for granted most of the time. If I had the opportunity to redesign a kitchen for myself now, I might not go quite as ‘country’ in my choices but I will always love a cosy and charming kitchen, and one that suits the design of the rest of the house. And I must say, when the lights are dim and the music is on, and the aroma of something yummy simmering on the stove is in the air, I still love my kitchen and wouldn’t trade it for anything. Just like mom, I love mine best.

K
itchens—often not the most comfortable but the most-used room in the house. The room where kids do their homework and teenagers leave grungy pots in the sink. The first room you head to when you start your day and usually the room that has a dim light glowing during the long evenings. Where the bills are paid and where the floor gets the dirtiest. The room that takes the longest to pack when you move and is the most expensive to renovate. The room that sells a house—or doesn’t sell a house. Where the best family talks often happen; where insomniacs head to in the middle of the night, and where the kids’ art gets stuck to the bulletin board along with tickets to the class play. Where the family calendar hangs for all to see and where the dog gets fed. Where Saturday morning breakfast is created and, of course, where the party always ends up. It may be sexist to say, but the kitchen is kind of like the mom of the house. It’s the glue that holds the rest of the house together. Always at the centre of things, whether on a quiet Sunday afternoon with one person in charge of the roast, or at a large gathering when you wish everyone would clear out.

One of the many conveniences of the SMARTWALL® system is the patented “Micro Bevel” edge detail, which eliminates the traditional taping stage of finishing the drywall surface. The micro bevel requires much less filler to achieve a finished surface, resulting in far less sanding and therefore less dust created.
Unlike the multi-step process of conventional construction methods, DRIcore SMARTWALL® combines framing, insulation, drywall and a vapour barrier in one fast step. SMARTWALL® panels lock together using a tongue & groove system.

Today’s kitchen is a blend of modern and rustic—where an efficient workspace and a laidback, relaxed environment co-exist in perfect harmony. BY SILVANA LONGO
A much welcome break from the all-white kitchen we have been seeing for the past few years, this mix of finishes, texture and colour add much needed warmth and interest to this space. “The juxtaposition of exotic Macassar Ebony Wood on the bar with classic Calcutta marble in a honed finish, and two-toned cabinetry give this kitchen an eclectic and contemporary expression while remaining utterly traditional,” says designer Evelyn Eshun of her latest kitchen design project. The balance of light and dark, warm and cool, stone and wood, is a perfect example of contrast done right. evelyneshun.com myhomepage.ca April/May 2017 :: 21

COVER STORY
designer KITCHEN A designer learns first-hand that the road to a dream kitchen is filled with dust and decisions BY SARAH ST. AMAND • PHOTOGRAPHY BY MIKE CHAJECKI
I
f you ask a designer what was the most challenging project they have ever tackled, most will respond “my own home.” For me, that couldn’t be more true. With unlimited choices and a library of samples to choose from at our fingertips, what might seem like the perfect choice one day will likely change the next. After several months of planning and conceptualizing and daily phone calls to my designer friend to help confirm my selections, it was finally time to begin the inevitable demolition of our kitchen.

DEMOLITION DAY
When my crew started to tear out the 1,200 square feet of 20-year-old ceramic tile, there was no turning back. It was the first step to the tornado of dust that became a part of everyday living. Next came phase two, which involved the removal of the stippled plaster ceiling turning our living space into a vortex of drywall dust.
MAKE-SHIFT AND MAKE DO
With a busy household, a husband, three kids all under the age of 12 and a teenager, this renovation wasn’t fun. Two pails of paint with an old door on top of them became a table for cereal in the morning, and a crockpot became our best friend in the evening. The renovation was planned over the warmer months so we could utilize
the bbq, which became a saving grace. Paper plates and plastic cutlery were well stocked in our pseudo outdoor kitchen. The local pizza joint didn’t need to ask what we wanted on our pizza. By the third week of construction, we couldn’t wait for a homemade meal.
THE ISSUES
The pre-reno space had dark, dated cabinetry, minimal lighting, an awkwardly shaped island and a wall that divided the living space from the kitchen. We decided to remove the wall in between the kitchen and living room to create an open-concept space. COVER STORY
WHO’S ON FIRST?
Designing a fabulous kitchen requires more than just coming up with the perfect layout—the choices are endless—white cabinets, wood-stained cabinets, floating shelves, white countertop, dark countertop, chrome hardware, polished nickel hardware, appliances, and the list goes on. The decorative details inevitably are what make a kitchen special. Details like hardware, cabinet profile, upholstery and lighting capture the personality of a homeowner.
STATEMENT LIGHTING
Most people would consider lighting to be the last decision to be made, however, it is imperative the electrician is given direction during the demolition phase so he knows exactly where to place the electrical boxes. The placement of lighting in relationship to the cabinetry is an integral part of the kitchen in the planning stages. The oversized sconces flanking the hood and the pendant lights over the island were the jumping-off point for the style direction I wanted so I opted for outdoor sconces that gave me the scale needed to create visual impact. The sconces were also an unexpected element in the design of the kitchen. If you have the space for it, don’t be afraid to do something unique.
APPLIANCES
The next decision was appliance selection. It is important to choose them prior to the final design of a kitchen as the cabinetry is dependent on the sizes selected. Prior to the construction phase, electrical, gas and plumbing rough-ins must be decided based on the appliance specifications. After several hours of research I opted for professional appliances for the home from Fisher and Paykel.
STELLAR SURFACES
The countertop selection is essentially the icing on the cake. It can be a showstopper or it can be an understated design element. There are numerous choices from granite, quartz, soapstone or marble, and the process of narrowing them down can be daunting. The size of slabs vary so it must be chosen at the beginning of the process. The size of an island is sometimes determined by slab size. Price per square foot can also be a factor but with careful planning and budgeting, it is possible to splurge where you want to and yet save without going over your overall budget. 30 :: April/May 2017 myhomepage.ca

Marble was my stone of choice but I did not want the maintenance of sealing it and worrying about guests placing a glass of wine on the surface and creating a stain. It is a very porous material and absorbs liquids, a beautiful choice, but there are many quartz options that mimic the look. After searching high and low for just the right piece, I came across one that was a creamy white with lovely fluid veining that was perfect for my cabinetry colour, Swiss Coffee OC-45 from Benjamin Moore.
DEFINING DETAILS
The cabinetry is the part of a kitchen that is most noticeable. By adding details like crown moulding, beautiful hardware and furniture-base toe kicks, the look is elevated. If budget is an issue, keep cabinetry minimal and perhaps splurge on lighting or a decorative backsplash. In order to maximize the kitchen’s storage capacity, the cabinets were extended to the ceiling with a five-inch crown detail taking full advantage of the nine-foot ceiling height. The extra space can be used to stow away off-season items and other specialty kitchenware.

DISASTER AVERTED
If not precisely planned, a tiny kitchen or a grand kitchen can lead to chaos. There are so many aspects of a renovation that must be considered and without a plan in place and consideration of all aspects of a renovation, it can be a terrible experience and result in a disaster. It is important to take the time to carefully consider your space and how you see yourself living within it. After many years in the industry, I have consulted and assisted many of my clients with their renovations and helped them through the process. After living through the chaos, I can now empathize with the chaotic way of living for months on end.
NO PAIN, NO GAIN
But one thing is for sure, after a few meltdowns and the usual construction issues, I would go through it all over again. After all, in the grand scheme of life it’s not a long time and the benefit is a beautiful dream space that transforms a house into a home. One tip I can offer— brace yourself and learn to enjoy a lot of take-out!

ONCE UPON A KITCHEN The melding of modern and rustic takes shape in a country kitchen on Mother Nature’s clock PHOTOGRAPHY BY LARRY ARNAL Getting a kitchen design just right is always a little stressful. In this particular project, timelines were somewhat tight seeing the homeowner had a bun in the oven of her own, making it an even more time-sensitive project. Our young professional couple had bought a wonderful home in the country with the thought of starting a family— complete with animals, lots of space to grow, and land to spare. The setting is nothing short of bountiful Mother Nature in her glory but inside the home, the kitchen needed help bringing its outdated appliances, tiled floors and oak-stained cabinets into the now. Ultimately, we knew we had to conceive and create a modern country kitchen before the birth of her first child. From start to finish, we had seven months to complete the project. We knew this kitchen was going to go full-term and we needed her to do the same. The race was on to see who would cross the finish line first, baby boy “Harrison” or us!
ON SOLID GROUND
We started by removing the floor tiles in the old kitchen and replacing them with some beautiful hardwood. Many people worry about hardwood in the kitchen but the reality is that factory-finished hardwood will perform as well as tiles and is a little softer underfoot. Water is no issue unless it is left on the floor for hours and hours. We replaced the floor throughout the main level with a beautiful Satin wide board product in a warm-grey tone. Our first trimester ended on solid ground.
CHEF-WORTHY APPLIANCES
Next was the selection of appliances. Both she and her husband love to cook, so selecting a premium brand like Jenn-Air was the natural choice. A six-burner cooktop and range hood, coupled with a double oven and panel-received French door fridge and dishwasher were selected in record time. When cooking is a passion, it is important to look at products that will give you the superior performance a chef comes to expect. We love the idea of panel-received appliances in open-concept spaces to ensure that the kitchen looks like fine cabinetry when you are in the family room but is filled with function when you are working in the kitchen. In open-concept living, you want to elevate the visual of the kitchen to suit the elegance of the principal rooms.

FAUCETS & FINISHES
Next, we selected a farm-front style sink from Blanco to maintain the charm and era of the homeowners’ property coupled with a vegetable sink on the island. We were delighted to find they were both available in a Silgranit material, making them almost impossible to destroy and perfect for this new family. Blanco faucets in chrome, one for the farm-house sink with a spring control and the other has a simple arch, complemented each other perfectly. With a budding family, we needed a beautiful yet easy-to-maintain countertop. The Silestone by Cosentino option, a man-made quartz, fit the bill. We selected the Nebula Orion colour because it was simple but also had some graining in it like marble. Every new mom knows that any help hiding the dirt until you can get to cleaning it is a God-send.
TRADITIONAL MEETS MODERN
We then ran an elongated subway tile as a backsplash made of a bevelled glazed porcelain paying homage to the traditional country kitchen. Clean and crisp, modern and approachable— the space is elegantly embellished by black-and-gold lighting above the sink and island. We also selected knobs and pulls in matte black to provide contrast as well as add a touch of the “local blacksmith” look. The warm and reflective properties of the gilded drum shade interior result in a soothing glow, day or night.
POWER COUPLE
A classic black-and-white palette wove a common thread throughout the kitchen colour scheme. Anchoring the design, we incorporated a matte-black island and moving the eyes upward we selected, along with the homeowners, white raised-panel door cabinets. The result is a modern kitchen with a farm-fresh feel for this wonderful family in waiting.

This modern country kitchen was completed just one week before “Harrison” arrived on the scene. Our sources tell us that both kitchen and baby are doing brilliantly. hen a young family of five set out to update their kitchen, they wanted an opportunity to enlarge the existing footprint and brighten up their space. Their old kitchen was dated, dark and their cabinets were falling apart; this kitchen space needed a major overhaul. My design team and I were asked to create a classic and elegant kitchen that would stand the test of time, and would become the central area for the family and friends to gather in. Carefully playing with a combination of low and high finishes, materials and appliances, allowed us to achieve a striking kitchen on a budget.

“WE MAXIMIZED OUR SPACE BY PLACING ALL THE APPLIANCES ON ONE WALL.”
WARM & WHITE
Clean and simple is the cornerstone for contemporary design, which is why I love to use classic cabinetry with clean lines adding both texture and warmth with hits of colour throughout. The custom range hood and the island in their contemporary ash-brown hue of natural wood break up the crisp white envelope and warm up the space while offering a distinctive and sophisticated character to the kitchen.
STORAGE SUPREME
Not only does a large island function as a major storage component in a kitchen but it also acts as a focal point in the space. Going from a kitchen that once had a peninsula, with a lot of wasted square footage in the centre, to incorporating an island with extra storage was at the top of the homeowners’ wish list. The island has pullout drawers and mesh doors perfect for storing fruits and veggies.
PROBLEM SOLVING
Smart storage also means that bulky, built-in appliances seamlessly merge with pantry cabinets and other millwork to maximize space. In this renovation, we
borrowed a few inches from the adjacent room in order to widen the existing area, but most importantly, it allowed the extra-deep fridge to recess into the wall cavity while still having it look flush with the other cabinets.
SEAMLESS SPACE-SAVING SOLUTIONS
Remember, every inch counts when space is a consideration. From sleek wall ovens and microwaves, to refrigerators, built-in appliances look custom and offer up more space. Even if certain appliances are not meant to be built-in, you can still make them look the part. In this kitchen, we maximized our space by placing all the appliances on one wall. Adjacent to the appliance wall, we included an appliance garage. This specialty cabinet is a great way to store small, yet bulky appliances without visual clutter like: mixers, blenders and food processors. Tucked away, they remain accessible, yet out of sight. When properly planning a storage solution of this sort, it is imperative that the interior cabinets are finished, and multiple electrical outlets are added prior to cabinet installation. myhomepage.ca April/May 2017 :: 41

DESIGNER TIPS
“A BACKSPLASH IS ALWAYS AT EYE LEVEL AND HAS ONE OF THE LARGEST IMPACTS IN A KITCHEN.”
BULKHEAD BE GONE
Turning a problem into a solution gave us one of this kitchen’s most attractive features. Flanking the hood, we designed two decorative glass-front cabinets that go right down to the counter, this feature was developed because of a vertical bulkhead that would be too costly to move, so we came up with a solution that would conceal the bulkhead behind the tall cabinets while still allowing for a shallow display cabinet in front.
POWERING UP
Extending just past the kitchen was a wide wall where we added a full-height pantry cabinet. This extra space was high on the homeowner’s wish list to ensure ample storage for additional appliances, drinking glasses and bar stock. We also
incorporated charging stations within the drawers to be able to charge tablets, cell phone and other devices while having them neatly tucked away. Getting to know our clients’ lifestyle and daily requirements in advance grants us the opportunity to accurately detail small items such as power supply in the very specific areas of the cabinets. The design of the pantry called out for something a little more unique, we wanted it to feel more like a furniture piece while still blending into the landscape of the kitchen. Inspired by an apothecary cabinet, we included a series of drawers to give the cabinet character. Playing with cabinetry hardware allowed us to shape the design, it’s truly an affordable way to add character to any kitchen while making a big statement.

KITCHEN JEWELRY
Knowing when to splurge is key to a successful design. A backsplash is always at eye level and has one of the largest impacts in a kitchen; it’s worth setting a generous portion of your budget to make your mark with specialty features. The homeowner was adamant about the backsplash being unique without being too bold. A 2"x4" natural stone set in a herringbone pattern was our backsplash of choice; the composition and material presents a classic detail that adds texture and interest without overpowering the rest of kitchen. Its colour and smooth texture also complements the oversized 30"x 30" Italian porcelain floor tiles, which mimick the look of natural stone. This crisp white floor brightens the kitchen and is in sharp contrast to the former darkness that predominated. Function and esthetics go hand in hand, nevertheless, understanding the functions of a kitchen drives the design. The result is a vibrant, contemporary kitchen with classic elements. KIMBERLEY’S GUIDE TO
MUDROOMS Create an efficient landing area with these design tips
KIMBERLEY SELDON
ENTRANCE AND STORAGE
Colourful spools are installed on a board, creating unique hooks for jackets and scarves.
In addition to practical flooring you’ll want to maximize storage. Concealed hanging storage houses items that are used only occasionally, such as rain jackets and umbrellas. If you don’t have room for a built-in cabinet or large closet, then open hooks, spaced six to nine inches apart provide easy access to frequently used items. For children’s items secure hooks approximately 36” above the floor, for adults increase height to 60”.
An effective mudroom
frequently operates as a home’s main entrance, but it can also be a dumping ground for all the “stuff” you don’t want visitors to see. Here are some tips to creating a well-functioning utility space rather than an inefficient eyesore.
SOLID GROUND
Regardless of size, a well-functioning mudroom needs flooring that’s indestructible, easy to clean and slip resistant. Slate, honed tile, linoleum and cork are ideal options. An area carpet or large mat can stop dirt at the doorway, before it’s trucked further into the house. In addition, a thick area carpet provides real comfort underfoot and also has some noise-dampening properties. Before purchasing an area carpet or mat, make sure to measure clearance under the door swing.
While a dedicated mudroom is a luxury, it’s possible to create an open-concept mudroom with a scant four feet of wall space. For storing coats, jackets, shoes, boots and heavy school backpacks, 48” is sufficient. Add a wall unit to define the mudroom and provide guests with a bench or some built-in seating for additional storage and a perch for changing into boots or shoes. The mudroom is also a great place to keep “command central”—a large bulletin board corrals the detritus of family life such as birthday party invitations and social engagements, soccer games and dance lessons, and doctor appointments.

egin your annual seasonal cleaning by setting a realistic timeline. It may be possible to get a small condo ship-shape in a day but in a large house, chores may better spread over a week. Whatever the size of the home, these tips should help:
DO AWAY WITH DUST • Vacuum rooms from the top down—starting with the ceilings. Dust light fixtures and bulbs. • Empty and vacuum closets. If something has not been worn in the last 12 months—and it’s not a tuxedo or a wedding gown—throw it out or donate it to a thrift shop. • Vacuum mattresses, and wash mattress and pillow protectors on a sanitary wash setting. • Dust bookshelves.
ECO-FRIENDLY PRODUCTS • Keep in mind that effective cleaners don’t need to contain harsh chemicals. Consider green cleaning solutions, such as vinegar and water, or eco-friendly commercial products, such as Mrs. Meyer’s, a sustainable, plantbased cleaning line with pleasant scents that launched in Canada earlier this year.
Black & Decker’s steam cleaner has a detachable head, which means it functions as both a hand-held and floor device. • Steam is another eco-friendly choice. It works well on floors of all types and is terrific for freshening soft furnishings and cleaning draperies. (Drapes can also be placed in the dryer on a no-heat setting to dislodge dust.) If you launder slipcovers, put them back on while very slightly damp to avoid shrinkage. • Vacuum window screens and wipe around sills and frames. Wash glass the old-fashioned way with a mild detergent solution rinsed with vinegar and water. Or try Hoover’s new SteamScrub 2-in-1, (hoover.ca) which comes with a squeegee made for the purpose. • Wash greasy kitchen walls and cabinets, or consider repainting. While you’re at it, toss all your reusable shopping bags in the wash. • Clean and wax wood furniture.

SAFETY FIRST • Do a safety check: while cleaning bathrooms, remove expired medication from cabinets and return to a pharmacy, where it can be disposed of responsibly, or look up CACP National Prescription Drug Drop-Off Day. (https://www. cacp.ca/cacp-national-prescription-drug-drop-off-day-2015.htm.) Check batteries in smoke/carbon monoxide detectors after making sure they’re free of dust. Ensure you have fire extinguishers on each floor and review your family’s fire escape plan.
• When cutting grass for the first time, use a bag on the back of the mower to catch the clippings. That will deter thatch from forming and smothering the grass below. After that, leave clippings on the lawn, as they protect the root system from the hot sun. • Cut down all ornamental grasses right down to the ground to encourage new growth but DON’T prune spring-flowering shrubs, such as lilac, which bloom on old growth.

ARCHITECTURE
EXPERT
I
love the drama of a black and white bathroom, it’s elegant and fashionably timeless. By varying the physical and visual texture of the black-and-white materials and fixtures, the design possibilities are endless. When designing a bathroom, create the overall floor plan and elevations first and locate the fixtures. This will determine how much of the budget will go to electrical, plumbing and carpentry. The next step is to source the fixtures.
SAMANTHA SANNELLA
THE BLACK AND WHITE OF IT
A detailed look at how to pull off a bathroom in this classic colour combination KEEP IT COHESIVE Because fixtures vary so much in pricing and style, you may want to narrow down your choices before committing to an overall bathroom style. Remember, every manufacturer has their specific shade of white. Some plumbing fixtures are more off-white than others. Buying porcelain products from the same manufacturer guarantees a match. If you decide on black fixtures, I would definitely recommend you stay within the same manufacturer. Kohler has a beautiful line of black fixtures. The Kohler Veil is a wall-mounted elongated toilet that comes in ‘black black,’ which is Kohler’s darkest colour. Pair it with one of Kohler’s ‘black black’ sinks and tubs. Victoria and Albert also offers a lovely line of sinks and tubs in gloss and matte black.
VANITIES FOR EVERY BUDGET Finding the perfect vanity can set the style for the bathroom. Luxury vanity companies offer freestanding vanities that are reminiscent of furniture. For true elegance, look for solid wood and hand-carved marble tops. There are many companies that offer ‘off the shelf,’ sleek, modern style wall-mounted vanities in gloss white
and black. For those of you who want to make the most of your space, consider getting a vanity made with the countertop of your choice. The vanity can be made with customized drawers for makeup, jewelry and toiletries. Most recently, I have added pull-out trolleys as towers on either side of the counter to maximize vertical space. Additionally, for the budget-conscious, consider a vanity from a big-box store. Before committing, look for durable surface finishes and plywood or solid-wood construction.
BLACK FIXTURES The newest trend on the market is matte-black faucets. Most of the major companies such as Kohler and Delta sell them. Available for sinks and tubs, check the specific style line before you commit, as they are not always available for both and many don’t offer a bidet option.
NATURAL & EXOTIC When sourcing natural-stone tiles or slabs, the earth gifts us with many amazing options. For those who want an extra special feature bathtub, consider a carved bathtub in Nero Marquina marble or polished black granite. When deciding upon a tub like this, make

2017-02-24 2:11 PM
sure you consider what other fixtures you will pair with it. For floor or wall tiles, a wonderful marble choice is Port Black, which has a slight white vein. There are quite a few black marbles from Turkey, Spain and France, many with white veins or bronze veining. The classic Thassos marble from Greece is one of the whitest marbles, while marbles like Calcutta and Carrera vary from yellow to grey. For those of you with a big budget, White Quartzite is stunning and offers an unparalleled depth and visible crystals.
SUSTAINABLE STONE Porcelains and composite stones offer a more sustainable solution and allow the designer to play around with texture as many of these materials now have a 3D relief on the surface made possible by laser cutting. One such tile, offered by CIOT is the Brillo from Spain, which is a 3D-hexagonal tile. Each box comes with several profiles and they fit together like a puzzle. One of my favourite floors is Nero Marqui-
na herringbone tile. Mix this with a crisp white vanity and tub, and you have an instantly stylish solution. There are thousands of choices in tiles, just remember slip-resistance is important in wet spaces. In a bathroom, I would highly recommend epoxy or stain-resistant grout.
JUST-RIGHT LIGHT Lighting a black-and-white bathroom can be tricky. You want to make sure that the white surfaces are free from shadows. As always, choose three types of lighting: general, task and decorative. Make sure fixtures are bright and dimmable. When choosing fixtures, pay special attention to the colour temperature, which is measured in Kelvin; 3000-3200K is a good temperature for bathroom light. The higher the temperature, for example 6000K, the cooler and bluer the light will be. Blue light is very unflattering and has no place in the bathroom! Conversely, don’t go below 3000K, or you will appear jaundiced in the mirror.

ROOM to GROW A MAN’S PLACE IS ALSO IN THE KITCHEN
No longer the domain of women, single and married men alike are taking ownership of the kitchen and stepping up to the plate to express their confidence in cooking for themselves and their guests. Today’s self-sufficient bachelors are also weighing in on the style, functionality and performance of their kitchen. Not everyone has the space for a fully equipped gourmet kitchen, so ensuring every square inch is both efficient and beautiful is key to making time spent in there enjoyable.
A BACHELOR AND A BUNGALOW
When my friend and former Jackie Glass Inc. partner, Christine McGee and I were given the exciting challenge
A bachelor-inspired kitchen design cleverly meets both single- and family-man lifestyles
to design a bachelor’s newlypurchased ‘70s-style urban bungalow, we really had to alter our mindset and put ourselves in the shoes of a young professional man who lives alone and loves to cook and entertain at home. Given clear direction, it didn’t take us long to come up with a grand plan for this small home and create a flexible open-floor plan design suitable for the life of a bachelor, from hosting game day for friends to preparing intimate dinners for two. And, as we all know, the life of a bachelor can be short-lived so planning for the future was important to the homeowner in terms of investment and lifestyle. When the time came, the home should be able to transition effortlessly from bachelorhood to family life with a minimal investment of time and money.

FLAG HERE
ELEMENTS OF A BACHELOR-STYLE KITCHEN CABINETS: Flat-panel solid walnut doors with simple brushed-nickel handles are easy to clean and offer a sleek modern look. Dark custom cabinets as opposed to white cabinets, when paired with light-coloured countertops and walls, create contrast and a more masculine appeal. Drawer organizers are essential to any busy kitchen and help keep countertops clutter-free.
FULL-FUNCTIONING KITCHEN FEATURES
While we thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of creating a relaxed yet sophisticated home for this busy single man, the most fun was designing the hub of this newly remodelled home: the kitchen. With a few minor structural changes, mainly the partial removal of the wall between the kitchen and the living room to open up the space, a new modern culinary kitchen, designed for frequent cooking, dining and entertaining took shape. A galley-style kitchen, featuring specific elements tailored to the design esthetic and lifestyle of our bachelor. Spatially, its size and layout is efficient and offers room for two to cook comfortably together, with all the essentials close at hand. It was imperative that his time in the kitchen be enjoyable. For those of us who love to cook and spend time in the kitchen, we know the value of generous work surfaces, good lighting, durable finishes on cabinets, energy-efficient, high-performance appliances, countertops and walls that are easy to clean. When it came to style, a slick, modern look in a masculine colour palette pulled it all together.
THAT’S ENTERTAINMENT
Open to the living room, guests are free to mix and mingle with each other as well as with the cook when entertaining. A raised cocktail-cum-breakfast bar on the island is perfect for drinks or casual meals while a small dining area adjacent to the living room, with convenient access to the barbecue on the backyard deck, offers formal dining Ă deux as well as with friends and family.
ONCE UPON A BACHELOR
The goal to design a modern, stylishly masculine kitchen, which could easily transition from a bachelor pad to a small-family home was achieved. Today, now a former bachelor, our client is a happy father of two, cooking for four and enjoying family life in a home designed for living exactly the way he had envisioned it to be.
FLOORS: Large-format porcelain floor tiles
are super durable, easy to keep clean and petfriendly. Hardwood floors stained to match the walnut cabinets unify the open plan.
LIGHTING: Two large windows offer natural
light by day while pendants flood the island and bar by night. The range hood illuminates the stovetop.
APPLIANCES: Guys love the power and high-performance of a stainless-steel gas range with convection oven. A stainless steel side-byside fridge/freezer with water and ice dispenser is a must in any culinary kitchen. No bachelor kitchen is complete without a microwave. The benefits of an under-cabinet beer fridge goes without saying on game day. WALLS: Cabinets cover the walls and extend
from floor to ceiling to maximize storage and keep everyday essentials out of sight and off the countertops. The backsplash, clad in large-format white marble tiles from countertop to ceiling is easy to maintain and offers the height of luxury in this stunning kitchen.
COUNTERTOPS: Quartz countertops in a light neutral colour are fitted with two stainless-steel undermounted sinks, a prep sink under the window and a double-bowl sink in the island. This is a great solution when two cooks are in the kitchen at one time. A raised bar on the island is perfect for breakfast and morning coffee or for guests to join the chef for a cocktail. It also hides the prep area and sink when entertaining.

STELLAR STORAGE At work or at home, these design tips will help you create stylish and functional storage solutions in your work space
BY MELISSA DAVIS PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANI BUCHMAN

triking the perfect balance between practical use, function and clever storage solutions is tricky. I’ve recently relocated my design studio and it was perhaps my greatest challenge yet. I tend towards a minimalist esthetic in my personal spaces and opt for clear surfaces devoid of clutter. This new studio is a bit of a unique animal. In the spirit of creative collaboration, my friend and owner of Analogue Gallery, Lucia Graca Remedios and I decided to join forces, creating a hub of art and design. Canada’s foremost source for Rock photography, it seemed like a natural marriage; I create the space, they adorn the walls, and we work and exist in a sort of creative synergy. We both possess our own inherent stock of ‘stuff’ to run our respective businesses so we needed to create solutions that would house everything without that function being too prominent. The exercise offered a case study of sorts with a few fun ideas you can incorporate in your own home or office. Here are my top five tips for unconventional formmeets-function storage.

GO VINTAGE
The design studio tends to keep samples of our go-to products on-hand, making our initial design scheme creation more efficient. With that there are lots of tiny samples, everything from tiles, fabrics, paint chips to countertops and flooring. It’s nearly impossible to make piles of small items look tidy with any day-to-day use. I sourced a vintage teak dresser, giving me nine equal drawers perfectly suited to sorting products by category, colour and use. These pieces come up often on Kijiji for as little as a few hundred dollars. Consider this idea for craft rooms, kids’ play areas to sort LEGO, puzzles and toys into categories, making playtime—and more importantly—cleanup time a breeze.
WALL-TO-WALL
Next to keeping things out of view, there are the practicalities of the office like: files, staplers, paper and the necessary stock of coffee. Rather than doing a series of individual storage pieces, purposely built for each need, we opted for wall-to-wall built-in cabinetry, topped with a counter for an über functional work surface. By using Ikea’s SEKTION kitchen cabinets, and white SALJAN counters, we have a slick outer look, with a very clean overall design. A series of small items create more visual clutter, whereas larger but consistent units make a space look bigger and tidier. This is a great affordable solution for a home office, dining room side credenza or basement rec room.
CURATE AND DISPLAY
Some things simply need to be accessible and hiding them away doesn’t make sense for how you use them. For us that’s the beverage station, and extra books that the gallery sells. By creating specific spots and bases to house them, there’s more of a purpose to the placement and they become part of the overall esthetic in the process. For kitchen items, consider putting them on an oversized tray like this SVARTAN tray table from Ikea. Books, tools and utensils fit perfectly in vessels and crates like these wooden ones. Group several together and create a functional vignette.
FLOATING WALL
There simply isn’t any way around the need to store extra boxes, brooms and supplies and small storage units won’t cut it. We opted to pull a wall surface 3 feet from the rear wall smack in the middle of our main reception room. Seemingly the last place you’d think to hide the unsightly stuff, but this is an approach that I often use in my residential designs. It was an opportunity to create a feature wall front and centre, which serves form as much as function. When guests visit the space, they are greeted with a statement piece from the gallery, and tucked away out of view are our functional supplies.

FILL THE WALLS
Traditional galleries select a few key works to display, storing the balance away out of sight. With space at a premium, we hatched the idea to display it all. We filled the walls with photography. The result is an unconventional but seemingly more fitting way to view the collection. Seeing the pieces in groupings better lends the impression to how we might hang them in our homes. There are wonderful hanging systems on the market that allow you to install a simple rail, and have the flexibility to change the work, as often as the mood strikes. This is a terrific approach for gallery walls in your family room, or better yet, a place to display your child’s artwork. Sometimes the best solutions are born of the biggest challenges. We designers tend to look to the odd and often unrelated for ideas, leading to the most innovative results.

tanding taller than any other tower in the city, the Shangri-La in Vancouver boasts impressive architectural features and is amongst the city’s most prestigious buildings. Luxuriously styled and modern minimalistic, this structure provides incomparable views of the bustling west coast metropolitan. LUX Design approached the interior design of their client’s suite within the Shangri-La with intent and purpose. Carefully balancing the client’s style with the character of the building and riveting scenery, a remarkably striking interior space was created.
IMPRESSIVE START
Crisp white walls, rich hardwood floors and tall baseboards help set the scene in this high-end, high-rise suite. Floor-to-ceiling windows invite views of downtown skyscrapers, and offer a contemporary quality of construction. 62 :: April/May 2017 myhomepage.ca

LAYERS OF STYLE
Looking to create a masculine interior that would complement the space as opposed to competing with it, we were deliberate in selecting pieces with refined lines and unique elements with sophisticated finishes. The selection of furniture also played a critical role in accentuating the space while maintaining a welcoming environment.
LIVING ROOM
In the living room, two lavish grey armchairs sit across from a modern chaise lounge. The low backs of these pieces invite accentuated views of the city from across the room to the windows. Echoing the clean lines of the architecture, a unique buffet in this area adds character, flair and premium storage space, borrowing elements in the style of mid-century modern. A custom-wood feature wall and fireplace— conceptualized and created by LUX Design—injects a tactile quality to the space and adds natural warmth. Continuing the linearity of the vertical wood wall, a textured area rug adds visual interest and overall comfort to the room.
In a tight space, a great way to create the illusion of openness and grandeur is to utilize glass; this will allow your sightline to continue through the room without stopping.

DECOR TIPS
DINING ROOM
While fewer pieces of furniture are required in smaller spaces like condos, ensure they are the most impactful in both function and style.
Adding some weight to a space is important, however, in smaller areas it is important to do so in a way that does not visually overtake the room. An example of this is seen in the dining area. The sculptural table base creates a powerful yet subtle statement below the glass table top and globe light fixture above—a nod to the contemporary vibe of the Shangri-La. The weightless contour of each dining room chair—inspired by classic 1960s silhouettes—helps balance the rich dark-brown leather seat. Playing within the scale and proportions of the dining room, a long console fills out the space perfectly, while not visually dominating the small area. Not drawing too much attention away from the views outside of the adjacent window, a simple and exquisite piece of art hangs above the console, helping to complete the space and leaves a lasting impression for guests while reflecting the homeowner’s style.
BEDROOM
The clean lines throughout the suite carry through to the bedroom area, where they can be seen in the bed linens and tables. Utilizing mirroredbedside tables not only provides storage, but helps to visually expand the room. In alignment with the homeowner’s esthetic, we selected solid black lamps, which are balanced by their soft curvilinear shape and brightwhite shades.
FAMILY ROOM
To create a masculine palette in the family room, we integrated earthtone textiles, leather accents and hints of blue. A dark-metal table is nestled in closely to the plush sofa, allowing the homeowner to put his feet up at the end of a busy work day. 64 :: April/May 2017 myhomepage.ca

INJECTING YOUR STYLE IN A SPACE Using a warm-toned textural wallpaper assists in elevating and refining a room while still keeping it comfortable and casual.
So‌how can you define your style and make a space your own amid dominant architecture and competing views? As shown in this Shangri-La suite, it is a careful balance between key elements and characteristics. Choose finishes and furniture pieces that complement one another without competing against each other. Create visual interest through texture that echoes the architecture of the space and choose pieces that play up its style. Use reflective surfaces to create brightness and openness throughout, allowing for unobstructed views and ensuring that no single element dominates the space or feels too heavy. Finally, inject your own style in bold but subtle ways, like a large piece of art against a stark white wall or a hint of your favourite colour throughout.

PROFESSIONAL DESIGN ADVICE
Fed up, I called designers Glen Peloso and Jamie Alexander for help, explaining that I wanted a warm and cosy family room that would work for watching movies, family games nights and entertaining. Our conversation began with the confession that my budget was skinny, if not downright starving. It may sound odd to call in designers when costs are an issue, but it’s not. Like many designers, Peloso and Alexander will consult on a space without designing the whole project, helping clients decide where to save and where to splurge, and guiding them away from costly design missteps.
BUDGET-FRIENDLY SOLUTIONS
Instead of replacing tired wood panelling with new drywall, Peloso and Alexander agreed it made sense to paint all the walls (including the brick fireplace) in Dulux’s Fine Silver and the ceiling in its Tulle White. Before that was done, nail holes were filled, loose panels were secured and some cosmetic caulking (especially around the fireplace) was done. This was an easy, inexpensive fix. Because good lighting is key to any well-designed space, the design duo suggested using part of the budget to drywall the ceiling to a clean finish and installing dimmable LED pot lights—based

hen a room becomes so filled with cast-off furniture, old business files and off-season sporting equipment that there’s no place to sit, it’s simply wasted space. And with real estate prices being what they are, that just doesn’t make sense. That’s the realization I came to earlier this year when surveying my junk-strewn basement, which the family had not really used in almost seven years.

on a design done by their team. This decision delivered great design ROI—as lighting can be adjusted for watching movies, reading, chores or cleaning. A luxury vinyl tile in a “Sindon” pattern, from Burlington-based Karndean, was used to cover the floor. Easy to install, easy to clean and hardwearing, it has a sophisticated finish that looks like a cross between linen and poured concrete. If I’d wanted to more closely mimic the look of stone, I could have added “grout strips” but I chose a seamless look. This was in keeping with a recommendation from the designers that we focus on simple, unfussy lines and layered grey and silver neutrals. I love this flooring so much that I can’t wait to try it in another room. Fixing the aging chimney would have cost thousands of dollars. So I chose a plug-in electric fireplace from Dimplex. It warms the (approximately) 400-square-foot space, and the dancing flames are very realistic. A heat-free function that delivers a cosy glow in summer, when the basement is deliciously cool.
FABRIC & FURNISHINGS
A sleek sectional sofa from Urban Barn easily fits four sitting guests, or two people lounging its length on movie night. A matching ottoman provides extra seating and a surface for trays and books. The cool grey is warmed by occasional chairs in a teal fabric from one of my go-to sources—Artemano—and accessories from the Peloso Alexander showroom in Toronto. Because every room needs a conversation piece, a unique wooden sculpture stands out nicely against a full wall of draperies in a blue linen blend from JF Fabrics that hides a window that, though unattractive, was still serviceable—another savings. Now that the room is finished, it’s become a natural gathering space for family and friends, proving that wise design investments always pay off.

REMOTE RENO Offshore Project a Skyping Success BY CATHERINE DALEY
W
hen Xandra Kendall, president of The Gracious Living Centre, received a call from a lady in the Bahamas wanting a complete renovation of a 4,500-square-foot penthouse, Kendall thought she was pulling her leg. The client had recently purchased a brand new condominium in Nassau overlooking the ocean, and needed help with space planning and design, as well as appliances and cabinets. “The client said that she had chosen Rational because it was environmentally safe and resistant to humidity, and she wanted it as soon as possible,” says Kendall. Kendall initially thought that the call was a joke, because it was a friend who recommended her. At the time, TGLC (The Gracious Living Centre) was completing a 75-unit condominium, called Museum House, opposite the Royal Ontario Museum in Toronto. This was an exclusive project geared to discriminating, upscale clients, and Kendall had to be available until the work was completed to her high standards.
070_R_GL_AM17.indd 70
In Nassau, the owner of the condo, Joanne, was in the midst of expanding her own business, and didn’t have the time to make the trip to Toronto. Kendall suggested that she send the auto cad drawings, along with a list of priorities. “This was a challenge that was too interesting to refuse,” says Kendall. Via Skype, Kendall showed Joanne the entire showroom, and asked her to comment as they went along. “This is how we proceeded, and ultimately planned the 4,500-square-foot area,” says Kendall. The planning began with the living space, which included a bar and a sitting area with a television, and then moved on to the dining area and the large kitchen. “We wanted the entire open area to reflect the outside elements—the sky, the palm trees and, of course, the turquoise ocean.” In addition to the floorplan, a ceiling plan was also required for fans and lighting. When it came to the bedrooms and bathrooms, the closets and vanities were of high priority. Joanne pointed out that she was a marathon runner, and needed storage for at least 30 pairs of running shoes. Once the colours and door styles were chosen, Yanita, TGLC’s senior designer, placed the order with Rational Kitchen Cabinets in Germany. TGLC sent an installer from Canada to Nassau to complete the work, and to ensure that the warranties were protected. “We had some trepidation,” says Kendall. “But again, via Skype, we were in constant communication to make certain that the installation was in line with all of the building codes and standards.” The renovations were a resounding success. “It reaffirms TGLC’s ability to plan, coordinate and complete, a detailed project—even if it was all done remotely,” says Kendall. “A big thank you to Skype.”

SENIOR-FRIENDLY KITCHEN DESIGN Kitchen updates that will prove beneficial into the golden years
LIGHT BRIGHT
I’ve written before about the three different kinds of lighting: ambient, task, and accent. Ambient lighting illuminates the whole room, task lighting focuses on a specific area, and accent lighting is used to highlight a particular feature, such as a piece of art. When designing a kitchen for people who have some degree of impaired vision, ambient and task lighting are extremely important. Contrasting colours are also an important way to help those with failing eyesight. Those all-white walls may be trendy for the younger folks, but white light switches and electrical outlets stand out against darker colours.
systems that raise and lower cabinets and countertops with the push of a button. You can also install the counters at 30"— rather than the standard 36"—for wheelchair access, and leave openings below the counter wide enough for the chair to slide into. Even if you don’t need to use a wheelchair, it’s a good idea to consider having at least one work surface installed at a height you can work from while seated. Again, keep contrasting colours in mind to help avoid accidents. If the cabinets are white, a dark coloured counter will stand out, and vice versa.
FIXTURE FIXES
Kitchen faucets with dual knobs to control the hot and cold water can be hard to use for people with arthritis. Replace those with lever handles that are much easier to operate. Better yet, many manufacturers now have stylish, reasonably priced motion-sensitive faucets for use in the home. Rather than installing the faucet at the back of the sink, where it can be hard to reach—and inaccessible for someone in a wheelchair—consider mounting it at the side. Finally rather than small knobs you have to clasp to open cabinets and drawers, use wide loop-style handles that someone can slip their whole hand into.
COUNTER MEASURES
Getting access to countertop work surfaces and upper cabinets can often be an issue for the elderly, particularly for those using a wheelchair. If you’ve got the budget for it, there are mechanical

here’s been a lot of talk in the renovation business recently about the “aging in place” movement. The idea behind it is a simple one. As people get older, increasingly they’re hoping to continue to live in the house they raised their families in, rather than getting shunted off to a seniors’ home. In order for us (or our parents) to function on our own, we need to be able to feed ourselves. In this column I look at some of the key features to consider when renovating a kitchen to make it seniorfriendly. I also cover exterior projects geared to the aging-in-place movement that will ensure safety for this age group.

RENO EXPERT As I’m writing this, the snow is still on the ground. If you (or your elderly parents) aren’t able to clear the sidewalk and walkway safely, you really should consider hiring someone to do it for you. The expense of paying for snow removal is definitely worth avoiding breaking your hip—or your neck! Of course, if you have a limitless budget, I’ve worked on high-end homes where the owners have installed heating cables below the driveway that automatically melt all the snow. In summer, in-ground irrigation systems to water the lawn and gardens eliminate the chore —and potential trip hazard—of hauling around a hose.

hen planning or renovating a home to make it senior-friendly, most people tend to focus on the kitchen and bathrooms. But there are a few exterior projects that need to be considered as well. First and foremost is to have a sturdy railing along the front stairs. The building code requires a railing, but if you walk through any neighbourhood you’ll see a number of homes that don’t have one. If someone in the house is using a wheelchair or walker, you may need to install a ramp so they can enter and exit. There are very specific requirements in the building code regarding the width, slope, and dimensions of a ramp. If the pitch is too steep, you’ll have to build in switchbacks, including landings big enough for a chair to spin around on. Unfortunately, many homes just don’t have enough space at the front to accommodate the size of the footprint required. In that case, you might have to consider an exterior elevator, or a platform lift as they’re formally called (see Jim’s Pick, page 72).
As on the inside, lighting is one of the most important considerations for senior-friendly design. I recommend exterior lights with motion-sensors on the building. I also recommend lining walkways with guide lights. It’s a good idea to have a roof or some sort of canopy over the entranceway so people don’t have fiddle for their keys while standing in the rain or snow. That said, even turning the key to lock or unlock the door may prove difficult for some people. A number of companies now have programmable keypads to unlock the door. There are even so-called “smart” locks that link to your cellphone. Your phone communicates with the lock so all you have to do is touch it to open or close it. For safety and peace of mind, you should also consider having a videomonitoring system. I particularly like the Ring doorbell (Ring.com) that has a motion-activated camera that streams a live video to your smartphone so you can see who’s there before you even get to the door. It’s also a handy way to avoid missing deliveries even if you’re not home: “I can’t come to the door right now, please leave it on the porch.” Finally, install an automatic garage door opener so elderly drivers don’t need to risk slipping on snow and ice to open it.

heat the water line coming into your house or call your municipality to shut the water off at the street side. Homeowners doing a winter renovation in semi-detached houses or townhomes need to be mindful of how it may affect their neighbours. These types of homes have shared walls, and if the temperature in your home drops significantly, it can affect the comfort level of those living on the other side of the wall. If the shared wall is not properly insulated, talk to your renovator about installing some temporary insulation to prevent heat loss. This is another issue that should be discussed in advance as it may result in additional fees. Special precautions may be required when renovating homes with flat roofs. Major renovations or additions may compromise the structural durability of the home. Snow can build up on the roof, and if your home is not structurally finished, it may not hold up the weight. For an added fee, your renovator can have someone shovel the snow or have an electrician install a specialized heater. After the renovation you can choose whether to remove the heater
or leave it to prevent snow permanently. It is very important that your contract outlines the full scope of work and all associated costs. Avoid renovators who urge you to forego a written contract. It’s a sign that you are not working with a professional. Verbal agreements make it hard for you to hold your renovator accountable for sub-par work and you will not have a point of reference if there is a conflict over payment. Make sure you always work with a professional renovator. There are hundreds of them across the GTA. A good place to find one is at renomark.ca—home of the national RenoMark program. All RenoMark renovators agree to abide by a code of conduct, which holds them to a number of obligations. In addition to providing a written contract, they offer a minimum two-year warranty, are covered by at least $2 million worth of liability insurance and carry all applicable licences and permits. Your home is your largest asset so it deserves a pro, no matter what time of year it is.

inter might seem like an unusual time to undertake a renovation but with the right knowledge and a bit of preparation it can be a great time to add value to your home. Although we are at the end of this winter season, keep these helpful tips top of mind and ensure a future winter home improvement project proceeds as smoothly as possible. “The secret to a successful winter renovation is good planning and working closely with your renovator,” says Sam Lapidus, RenoMark renovator and chair of BILD’s Renovation and Custom Builder Council. Talking to your renovator in advance about potential challenges can help you save time and money in the long run. Snow and cold weather are two of the biggest factors in a winter renovation and they require precautionary measures so nothing is left to chance. Major renovations often require you to move out of your home for a few weeks. To ensure that your contractor has easy access to and from your home, you’ll need to make arrangements for shovelling snow and salting steps in your absence. Some renovation companies may offer the service but you’ll need to discuss it in advance. It may come at an added cost, so make sure it is noted in your renovation contract. When you move out of your home it will likely cool down significantly, even if the heat is still on. This increases the chance of water freezing inside your pipes, which could cause them to burst. To minimize the risk, have a plumber

KITCHEN TALK Annual Kitchen Design Trends Review
BRENDAN CHARTERS
A MUST Quality materials, lots of drawers with pullout storage features and a pot filler over that red-hot range.
Early each year,
we fall upon home show season when design industry leaders lay out the newest ideas to help make everyone just a little self-conscious about the state of their kitchens at home. Regardless of what type of kitchen you may think you need to survive, we can all generally agree that it’s impractical for us all to buy a food truck and park it in our driveway, even if it’s a Kimchi Taco truck. It’s widely known that the kitchen is the hub of the home—but some do that job much better and more stylishly than others. As time goes by, skilled designers invent modifications to let us all know what we now simply cannot live without in our kitchens, and by way of default, push those older trends deeper into obscurity. Given that not one homeowner is the same, we do not rely on only one designer’s ideas to create the solutions we offer them. At Eurodale we work with an entire team on our design-build projects, so I regularly confer with our group when we are designing and building for a client. Jim Cunningham from Eurodale Developments (Architectural Designer), Laura Thornton of Thornton Design (Interior Designer) and Jimmy Zoras from Distinctive by Design Fine Cabinetry (Kitchen Designer) all have an equal level of input into all our kitchen projects. This ensures the space planning and flow works, the intricate details and esthetics fit together and the ultimate execution matches the design intention. This year I adjusted the three questions I pose to them every year. We felt it prudent you know their thoughts on what’s new, what works best (and what is likely here to stay!) and what is headed for the waste bin when it comes to kitchen design trends. Hopefully you can use their valuable input, tabled here, when planning your own kitchen project.
1
WHAT IS THE SINGLE MOST CRITICAL THING YOU TRY TO DESIGN, FIT OR CONVINCE CLIENTS TO PUT INTO EVERY KITCHEN?
JIM@EURODALE: A pot filler is a must, especially when the sink is far away from the range. It avoids those nasty spills. It can also be used to put out any fires on the stove in a flash. In the event of an emergency, you don’t have to hunt around for your trusty fire extinguishers. (Author’s note—this is not how to extinguish a grease fire Jim!) LAURA@THORNTON: Quality! Investing in durable finishes will make your new kitchen last and look new longer. The elements of your home that you touch regularly should be where money is spent. Quality in the cabinetry, hardware, and countertops is key. JIMMY@DISTINCTIVE: Some of the most critical elements that I incorporate in my designs is a garbage/recycling and compost area, pullout drawers in pantries and lots of drawers for easy convenience.

From Humble Beginnings to Southern Ontario’s largest independent HVAC company, we’re still all about family. In our 46 years in the Air Conditioning & Heating supply and installation service industry, a lot has changed. Heating and cooling systems have advanced by leaps and bounds, and our ability to stay current in the industry is something we take great pride in. But one thing has never changed. The dedication to quality, value, and excellent customer service to provide professional home comfort solutions at a fair price that we built the Applewood Air name on has never wavered. In fact, you could say it’s our family tradition.

THE PRECIPICE White kitchens have dominated
the last decade. The jury is split on their future but regardless of colour, kitchens that can accommodate family and friends, not just chefs, remain on-trend.
2
WHAT TREND FROM THE PRIOR YEARS ARE YOU SICK OF SEEING AND THINK WILL DIE OFF IN FUTURE KITCHEN DESIGNS?
JIM@EURODALE: White on white on white. I don’t know how many times I have heard white is classic. Clients gravitate to white out of safety and to avoid having to do the next big reno sooner. I get it, my kitchen is 80 per cent white too. The challenge is, door panel designs change, whites fade and kitchens wear out from use. Why not enjoy your kitchen and add some colour into your life? LAURA@THORNTON: White kitchens still reign supreme (sorry Jim!) but the classic oversized hood-range combination will have to make way for a more contemporary tile-fronted or natural stone slab range-hood fan cover and matching backsplash. JIMMY@DISTINCTIVE: Some of the trends that are dying off are dark cabinetry, natural-stone slab counters (granite especially) and halogen lighting—LEDs have come a long way.
3
HAT IS THE NEXT HOT W THING THAT WILL FIND ITS WAY INTO NEW KITCHEN DESIGNS FOR 2017 AND BEYOND?
JIM@EURODALE: Kitchens will be built around technology vs. being added on later. Smart appliances controlling the kitchen so your meal can be ready for you when you arrive, or grocery auto-management. Here we come Jetsons. LAURA@THORNTON: Canadians are embracing colour. Get ready to start seeing amazing kitchen cabinetry in fabulous yellows, red, navy and glamorous black (sorry Jimmy!) JIMMY@DISTINCTIVE: Some new things we are building into kitchens this year include brass accents (hardware), grey and blue is a very popular colour combination, and wood grains are making a big comeback. No longer just a sterile food prep area, the kitchen is more of a gathering place for entertaining and these features add warmth and complement this lifestyle change.
At the end of the day, whether building new or remodelling an existing kitchen, my personal advice is to work with a professional for great advice and achieving the best results. Bottom line, the kitchen needs to be durable, look great and function for our many demands in the space. When planning your own kitchen renovation, think of how you plan to live in the space, and then look to the styling after. Door styles, colours and finishes change like fashion, but a space that is carefully planned and built with quality materials will serve you and your guests well (or longest), regardless of the next hot trend. Mahlzeit!

spring CHECK LIST
Ensure a bountiful garden this summer with Mark’s step-by-step guide in early spring
It’s time to get growing. As you contemplate your options in the yard, allow me to help you get organized. It is always more effective to approach a project with a plan.
START FROM SEED INDOORS Sow tomatoes,
peppers, cucumbers, leeks, zinnias, asters and the like now. With five to six weeks until our last frost date, your timing will be perfect. Come late May/ early June, you will be ready to plant in warm soil and your transplants will take off. Use a quality seed starting mix (I use 10 parts Pro Mix with one-part worm castings. Magic!) All seedlings need plenty of light to grow properly: sunlight or fluorescent lights work best.
LAWN CARE
My recipe for the best lawn on the block: • Rake lightly with a fan rake to remove winter debris.
• Fertilize with a quality lawn food. One that contains slow-release nitrogen and chelated iron. The nitrogen for a long-lasting green colour and the iron for the deepest possible green. I use Golfgreen Iron Plus on my lawn.
• Where weeds occur or thin spots exist, spread lawn soil four centimetres thick and rake smooth. Broadcast quality, Canadian grass seed at the rate of one kg per 100 square metres. Rake this smooth (again), step on it with flat-soled shoes and water until germination. Keep reasonably well watered until new roots are established (about four to six weeks). • When you are ready to cut your lawn, set your mower at six to eight centimetres high. Any lower allows weeds to establish and weakens your lawn. Use a mulching mower.

VEGGIES It might surprise you that this is an excellent time of year to start a vegetable garden. Don’t wait until the May 24th weekend to get started. By then you will have missed the best time to sow many of your favourite crops including: peas, carrots, onions, lettuce, broccoli, cabbage, Brussels sprouts and garlic (though fall is better for garlic). With cool April temperatures, this is a great time of year to prepare the soil of your garden by spreading three to four centimetres of Bio Max manure (or reliably highquality compost). You can turn this under the soil or plant right in it.

PLANT TREES, SHRUBS, EVERGREENS AND ROSES
All of the winter-hardy stock that you find at garden retailers this time of year can be planted in the garden, unless it has already flushed new, soft growth: an indication that it was forced in a greenhouse and is now frost-tender. All woody plants that are dormant at the time you purchase them are ready to plant this weekend.
g
ENJOYMENT STARTS NOW
And finally, after you have returned your garden furniture to its summertime place, be sure to sit on it. Enjoy the bird song (put out feeders and nesting boxes), the wind and the sunshine. It has been a snowy, cold winter and you have earned a break from the indoors.

DIG AND DIVIDE
This is a great time of year to dig up perennials and divide them into sections to replant around your yard or give away to friends and neighbours. Hosta, monarda, daylilies: you name it.
PHOTOGRAPHY: BIGSTOCK.COM, MARK CULLEN
SOIL PREP
Whatever you plant, be sure you prepare the soil well before you place your newly acquired plants in the ground. Ninety per cent of your success depends on it. If you are making a new garden in clay-based soil (common in southern Ontario) be sure to remove existing soil 30 to 40 centimetres deep. Replace it with triple mix, mounded 10 cm higher than the current grade, as the new soil will settle. If you are planting in an existing bed, add four to five centimetres of new, quality soil and either turn it under or let earthworms do it for you. Look for composted manure that is certified by the Composting Quality Alliance. I spread four centimetres of well-composted manure over my entire garden each spring. I also use worm castings whenever I plant: one part to 10 parts soil. Earthworm castings are nitrogen-rich and teaming with a concentration of nutrients and mycorrhiza. I can see the difference in plant performance when I use worm castings.

In The Kitchen To hardwood or not to hardwood? That is the question!
O
ne of the biggest dilemmas when trying to redo your kitchen is the choice for flooring. Design magazines will show kitchen after kitchen featuring beautiful hardwood floors. Designers will tell you that wood floors look fresh, warm and modern. But looks aren’t everything. How is one to really decide whether hardwood flooring is the right choice for the kitchen? We are going to break it down for you. When it comes to choosing flooring, there are a few things to keep in mind. The first thing is the amount of traffic that your room is going to have. Traditionally speaking kitchens have always been one of the high traffic areas in a home. These days, with the open concept homes that will flow from the kitchen to the dinning and family rooms, we are even using our kitchens for entertaining. Keeping that in mind, how do hardwood floors fair when it comes to traffic? The simple answer is rather well actually. Pre-finished hardwood floors, whether solid or engineered, have strong finishes applied to them that are more often than not UV cured, which makes them much more resistant to wear and tear. Good manufacturers of hardwood flooring products, such as Lauzon, manufacture their flooring to withstand a high level of traffic for a long period of time. So when it comes to traffic levels, hardwood floors will be right at home in your kitchen. The second consideration is wear and tear. You drop more things in the kitchen, spill
M2Flooring_R_AM16.indd 1
more, and in general you have a higher rate of wear and tear in your kitchen than other rooms of the house. This is where your choice of specie and finish will help you in the long run. When it comes to species, harder domestic species with a grain pattern such as oak and ash will do better than the softer species such as silver maple. These species are more resistant to denting under pressure. They also have grain, which can be used to create wirebrushed floors. Wirebrushing the hardwood will create a textured floor that will only get more character as it gets worn. Since it is not a smooth surface to begin with, it will show less imperfections and the matte finish that accompanies all wirebrushed flooring will also help minimize the visibility of those imperfections. Hard Maple floors may be harder than oak or ash ones but they are usually not wirebrushed. They can be distressed which will have somewhat of the same effect as wirebrushing. The rule of thumb is if you are concerned about nicks and dents, then choose a textured floor with a low sheen level. The third concern about hardwood flooring in the kitchen is exposure to water. This is the biggest reason some people shy away from hardwood floors in kitchens. There are two kinds of water concerns when it comes to the kitchen. The first is the fact that during cooking and cleaning there will be water droplets that will fall on the floor. This is especially of concern around the sink and the dishwasher areas. Most consumers are concerned that these water
droplets will cause damage to the flooring. The answer to this concern is simple. Most pre-finished hardwood floors have a higher tolerance for water than most people think. A few droplets will not kill your floors. There are even hardwood floor finishes, such as Lauzon’s Pure Genius Finish that are water repellant. However it is always a good idea to place a small matt under your sink and the dishwasher so that these rogue droplets will land on these placemats rather than on the floor. The other concern is washing your floors with a mop and soapy water. This is definitely going to be a big no no on hardwood floors. These days hardwood flooring cleaners have come a long way. They clean and disinfect just as well as, if not better than, soap and water. So using a microfiber mop and a good floor cleaner will get your kitchen floors just as clean as Mr. Clean would. So if you want to jump on this bandwagon, which takes hardwood throughout the entire main floor including the kitchen, then fear not. Your floors will hold up just fine. Use a hard domestic floor, with high levels of variation, or a more uniform floor with a textured finish and you will be happy and on trend. If you have any questions or concerns contact us at M2 Flooring and Design Centre and we will help you make the best decision for your home and family. MARBLE MIX TREND WATCH
Marble is a luxurious, timeless stone usually seen gracing the surfaces of bathrooms and kitchens…So coveted, in the past few years I have watched this classic material, real or faux, extend its scope from the countertop and floor to smaller decor and accent pieces throughout the home. But it doesn’t travel alone; marble pairs up with gleaming metallics, warming up the traditionally lux, albeit cool material, with this perfect marble mix. From accent tables to wallpaper, this style story of two becoming one lends sophistication and interest to everyday pieces. BY SILVANA LONGO
