FROM THE EDITORIAL DIRECTOR
COLD COMFORT
I’m one of those crazy Canucks who sticks up for winter when someone else is bemoaning it. No, I do not like being cold or having to change my footwear every time I step out the door; or getting home mid-evening after crawling for hours on a highway in a snowstorm; or slipping and falling on the ice (which I manage to do most winters). Those are the things I put up with in order to experience the squeak of packed snow underfoot on a bright, cold morning; the view of a silent snowfall out my living room window as the fire crackles; the feeling of rearranging the calendar for a snowstorm and giving in to the idea of safely staying put for a quiet day at home under a blanket of white; the view of a brilliant red cardinal at my feeder; heart-warming comfort food that only gets better simmering on the stove for hours; the incredible palette of a pink-and-blue sky at twilight; and being lucky enough to wake up on a night when the backyard looks like a movie set with the moon as bright as a light bulb, high in the sky, flooding the world with a blue-white light sparkling on the snow as bright as day. The list is quite long, I’m aware and I’ll stop, but as you can see, I’m quite passionate about my love of winter, and I find myself sticking up for it like a best friend when people talk about it disparagingly.
We look forward to hearing from you and welcome your feedback. Do you have a reno or decor question for our team of experts? Email editorial@ renoanddecor.com
Most of all, I love the afternoon winter light, low in the sky, casting those long, blue shadows on the snow. I find it as beautiful and soul-restoring as waves crashing on a tropical beach. When I find the time to be quiet and appreciate the light and nature in the winter, it soothes me and makes me slow down to take in the moment. I think that’s the definition of meditation, and it’s right outside my window. I have many collections in my house, but the little group of amateur-painted winter scenes I’ve gathered over the years, and display every winter, is one of my favourites. It shows me that I’m not alone in my love of winter. All of the aspiring artists who’ve sat out in the cold, painting over the years, were no doubt just as moved by its beauty as me. They’re calling for lots of white stuff this year— let’s all look at it as inspiration and try not to slip.

“Small-space living calls for multi-functional furniture,” says Tamara Robbins Griffith, HomeSense Design Expert. “A chic sofa-bed is a smart solution when it comes to overnight guests. When it comes to wallcoverings in a small space, we talked to the experts, and the resounding consensus is to GO BIG. Local wallpaper connoisseur, Maria Raco, founder of luxury designer wallpaper showroom in Toronto, NewWall House says: It seems to be a common belief that large patterns in tiny spaces tend to overwhelm a room and make it appear even smaller, when in fact, applying a wallcovering with a big, bold pattern actually energizes a tiny space. THE LATEST COLLECTIONS FROM NEWWALL HOUSE
Blue and White Grunge Watercolour
We crossed the pond and spoke with U.K. Murals Wallpaper head of design, Catherine Jacob, and she recommends these eye-catching murals for small spaces: BLUE AND WHITE GRUNGE WATERCOLOUR The punches of blue and white tones
in the mural, mixed with the different textures, give any wall more impact, regardless of scale. The design also acts as an optical illusion, in that it hides the corners of the room, and conceals where the wall starts and end. JACOBSEN The large geometric shapes of
the Jacobsen design work well in smaller rooms. Due to the oversize patterns, in particular the halved-circle shapes, the design outscales the wall, making it feel loftier. The mural is best styled with minimalist furniture, which allows the pattern to take centre stage. muralswallpaper.co.uk
Anemones by Missoni
Jellyfish by 17 Patterns
Camille by Coordonne
Tropical Clouded Leopard by Timorous Beastie
Jacobsen
Raco provides some helpful hints on HOW TO PULL OFF THESE LARGE-SCALE PATTERNS IN A TINY ABODE • Apply the pattern on all four walls as opposed to just a feature wall. This consistency will give the illusion of the space expanding in size. • If you prefer the room to have a more calming effect, choose soft colours instead. • Opt for texture if committing to a (big) pattern is too challenging.

sked if executing maximalist design in small spaces is particularly challenging, Meredith Heron shrugs. All it really takes, explains the Toronto-based designer, is extremely close attention to the scale, depth, and height of furniture, an appreciation of architectural constraints, an ability to weave pattern and texture through window treatments, seating, and rugs in a layered tonal palette, and the deft blending of art and accessories into an interesting, personally meaningful, and handsome mix. Simple, right? Heron’s own economically-sized Victorian home in downtown Toronto, less than 1,000 square feet and with a living/ dining area just nine feet wide and 21 feet long, accomplishes all that effortlessly, proving that small spaces are not necessarily best served by unrelenting understatement.

BIG ON CHARACTER
“Of course, there are personality types that thrive in a minimalist environment. Those are not my people,” says Heron, who shares the home with life/work partner, Asa Weinstein, and their son Luke, eight. “I could not put three things in a room—of any size—and call it done. Besides, that’s not how people live. Where do guys put their pocket change and keys? A maximalist style makes it easier to disguise clutter, which is always going to happen.”
RETURN TO THE CLASSICS
Heron, who bought the house with Weinstein 14 years ago, explains that a clumsy 1970s renovation had, among other things, hidden original mouldings under a drywall ceiling that gobbled up about 12 inches of the room’s 11-foot height. The water-damaged original moulding underneath was completely replaced, except for the original medallion in the foyer. “We liked that it looked old, and wanted to keep that charm and speak to the antiquity of the house.” Vinyl floors were replaced with herringbone oak.

COLOUR SCHEME
The colour conversation for this space starts with walls washed in Benjamin Moore’s Full Moon. Technically an off white, it has enough pigment that it’s “heading toward pale blue or iris,” and is well-suited to silver, purple, and periwinkle tones, says Heron. Hints of purple and cornflower blue turn up in the sofa, custom-made by Gresham House to ensure that it did not exceed 33 inches front to back (standard is 36 inches). “We worked really hard to minimize the guts of the back to allow for the maximum seat depth,” says Heron. “That’s one of the benefits of working with people who can customize within a framework—it doesn’t really have to add to the cost.”
PATTERN-FRIENDLY PLAYGROUND
The piece is covered in a Bargello (flame) stitch in a family-friendly Crypton fabric that Heron thinks is assertive but not aggressive. “People think they should not put a busy pattern on a sofa, so they put a tiny Herringbone or fretwork woven fabric. But the patterns are often way too small and they just make the piece seem dinkier and too traditional.” Patterns on pillows for the sofa both play with scale and connect with other elements in the room. Tones of the embroidery on a pillow with a modern Greek-key design echo the sofa, for example, while the grey on the back of the Robert Allen burnt-velvet leopard print, which Heron uses “all the time, in every project,” is a colour cousin to the draperies. “All those tone together, so that it’s all quite complementary. That kind of sliding scale makes your eye move across the room, and makes it seem bigger,” she says. Pattern, says Heron, can be “your best friend” in a small space, if kept within a consistent colour palette. Here, the living room rug is a bold trellis in an anchoring blue of Heron’s own design, which she favoured in part because “when you put a grid down on the floor, your eye follows the pattern and it spreads out and (space) seems bigger.”

A Thomas O’Brien chair from Century Furniture in soft-blue leather provides extra seating.
Decorative boxes hide everything from toothpicks to candles and lighters on a glass coffee table that allows the eye to follow the pattern without interruption.
Plaster mouldings are a more ornate design than would have been seen more frequently in Victorian homes in New York rather than sedate Toronto.

SPECIAL MEMENTOS
There are lots of personal touches, including piles of books, and a crowd of photographs of family and friends on an entranceway table. Art includes a print of a photograph taken of a very young Luke on a beach, the sunny blue of his gingham shirt mirroring lampshades that sit opposite.
BUILT-IN CUSTOM STORAGE
Storage that is “really well thought-out” will be key in a small space, says Heron, who designed a shallow buffet/bar console to provide a crucial 12 inches of storage. Made from printed acrylic sheeting from fabricator Lumigraf on a plywood-box construction, it was built by a “brilliant” cabinetmaker who was bedevilled—but not defeated—by the intricate bevelling she requested.
MORE THAN JUST A LIGHT FIXTURE
Heron, who says good lighting is always a worthwhile splurge, prefers “over scale, dramatic lighting” in small spaces, especially those with higher ceilings. In the dining area, Heron likes that a large, spikey bronze fixture “feels like sculpture rather than sparkle.” “A lot of people think that removing personality makes a space feel bigger and brighter and more open. But no matter what size your house is, it needs to reflect you. If it doesn’t, you are lying to yourself. And to everyone else, that is not who you are.”

Save and splurge your way to a chic, gender-neutral nursery
BY REBECCA HAY • PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANI BUCHMAN
B
abies are precious and of course, deserve to have it all. However, while our bundles of joy are worthy of a beautifully designed space, it’s easy to get carried away splurging on every detail. After all, it’s the parents who’ll be spending many sleepless nights here, too. You don’t have to break the bank to get the designer look you crave. Here’s how I kept my budget in check while still creating the chic nursery I dreamed of for my own little babe.
GENDER- & BUDGET-FRIENDLY
I’m particularly proud of this nursery, which was designed with some extra love for our first baby. Since we didn’t know the baby’s gender, I opted for a neutral theme and colour palette. Navy is one of my favourite neutrals, providing a sophisticated backdrop that’s ageless and pairs well with a variety of colours. I wanted a space that felt contemporary yet timeless, with some traditional elements. The strategy was splurge and save. 32 :: February/March 2018 RENO & DECOR myhomepage.ca

WHERE TO SAVE
For these purposes, keeping the redesign simple and cost-effective was key. To finish the walls, I originally wanted wallpaper, which can be pricey. We changed tracks and opted for the navy painted wall with gold decals to achieve that “papered” look without the effort, commitment or cost. I invited the grandma-to-be to help with the stickers (placed at random) and we turned this fun project into a party! Another save was the chest of drawers. By customizing this affordable piece of furniture, we made it one-of-a-kind. I dressed up the Ikea dresser with pretty square, gold knobs from Anthropologie. What a find! These gold knobs add a touch of sophistication to an otherwise simple, practical piece of furniture. Art is another easy save. The adorable baby animal photographs were purchased online and put into inexpensive box store frames. The cost? Minimal. The look? Too cute for words and suited to any boy or girl!
WHERE TO SPLURGE
Then there’s the “splurge” part of the decorating strategy. Some of the furnishings came at a greater cost, but in my opinion were well worth the spend. The crib is a solid-wood piece from New Zealand, classic by design with a slight nod to mid-century modern. Not too girly or too masculine. The modern rocking chair too was a splurge, but again, worth it for its comfort and lovely wood base.

I used Benjamin Moore’s Hale Navy HC-154 as my neutral of choice, and a great alternative to the ever-popular grey palette. This bold blue is fresh and classic. It makes the gold accents pop and complements the coral and yellow accents. Colours befitting any child, no matter their gender.

DESIGNER TOUCH
My favourite element is the custom drapery, which also lands in the “splurge” column. I love using fabric as an accent in a room, to bring in interest, texture and colour. The best part is the ball fringe, which adds a playful detail. A bit of a risky move but miraculously, only a single pom has been plucked off by little fingers…so far! Underfoot, the wool broadloom carpet is soft and cosy, and adds warmth to the space. The light carpet and whitewainscotting detail help to balance the dark-blue walls and brighten a rather dark room. Remember when decorating a nursery, or any room for that matter, it can be easy to get caught up in the excitement of it all and lose sight of the real goal—a harmonious space that makes its inhabitants feel comfortable, relaxed and right at home.
SIBLING SHARESIES
We made this nursery a space that any little baby can grow into. It’s a nursery that my little boy has thoroughly enjoyed. By thinking in terms of gender-neutral palettes and smart investments, this nursery has been an easy hand-medown to a new baby sister! As your kids grow and develop their own specific likes (and dislikes), the accessories will be easy and economical to update and add. You don’t have to overdo a theme, or break the bank doing it.

A spare room filled with unwanted items becomes an opportunity to turn a small profit

believe that great style has little to do with how much money you spend, but rather how creative you can be with your budget. Because of that philosophy, I try to push the creative AND budget boundaries when I tackle a design project. I’m always up for the challenge of designing a high-style space for an impossibly low-price tag, but what if the budget is ZERO? Is it possible to re-design a room without spending a dime?

M
I think so. And I decided to test my theory by attempting a project that I coined my “breakeven challenge.” My husband and I are serial renovators, and for the past few years, we’ve been slowly transforming every square inch of our home inside and out— except for one forgotten room. Our spare bedroom had become un-affectionately known as the “stuff room”; where things that we no longer wanted—but were still in great condition— piled up. What should have been a guest bedroom was beginning to look more like an episode of Hoarders!
AN INVENTIVE INVENTORY
The next day, I eagerly snapped pictures of all the items and quickly created online listings with descriptions from my phone using the Kijiji app. Within minutes of my first post, I had an instant message on the app from a prospective buyer, and we set up a meeting the next day. By the end of week one, I sold more than half of my stuff and made over $700! I’ve always been a huge supporter of the second-hand economy, and love finding pre-loved treasures, but this was my first time in the role of the seller. It felt so amazing knowing that my items were going to great new homes and NOT the landfill.
KA-CHING
In under a month, I sold virtually everything AND made a whopping $1,270, which is above the annual average of $1,037 earned by Canadians selling in the second-hand economy. Now that I had a budget to work with, it was time to start shopping for key items to finally add style and function to the room. Knowing that I could expect to pay four times more for brand new furniture and accessories than if bought used, I turned back to Kijiji to find some awesome thrifty finds.
BEFORE
MAKE ROOM FOR CREATIVITY
For more than a year, the door remained tightly closed in an ignorance-is-bliss attempt to avoid facing the embarrassing clutter. However, I couldn’t close the door on the subconscious clutter that rattled around in my brain, constantly reminding me that I would have to face the mounting pile at some point. But with all of the other reno business happening around the house, it was never high on the priority list …or in the budget. One day, as I hopelessly added yet another item to the STUFF pile, it dawned on me that I was actually staring at piles of potential CASH! Cash that could fund my room makeover. Cue the lightbulb moment! Then and there I decided to sell everything I no longer wanted and use only the dollars earned to re-design the space. My goal was to break even a.k.a. spend ZERO DOLLARS. myhomepage.ca

FABULOUS FRUGAL FINDS
I scored a waterfall dresser, a unique wood chair, and glass-top side table for $30 each, and I even found an ornate wood screen for $90 to use as a headboard, and a brand-new daybed for only $125. When shopping the secondhand economy, I always look for items with upcycling potential. You aren’t likely to find something in the exact colour you’re looking for, but the finish can easily be changed with a little DIY elbow grease. I was specifically searching for items that fit the style and size that I wanted, and knew that the colour would be a quick and affordable fix.
ADD YOUR STYLE STAMP
Once I had all the items on my shopping wish list crossed off, I was ready to customize them to suit the space and my personal style. The dresser got a quick coat of Chalked Paint from Rustoleum, in a smokey teal colour called Tidal Pond, the chair was sprayed in Blush Pink and reupholstered with a fun faux-fur rug. The tarnished brass chandelier and chrome side table were transformed with a simple spray of Universal metal paint in Satin Bronze. I even made a plank desktop with lumber that I found listed in the FREE section on Kijiji.
A SECOND-HAND FIRST
After an action-packed month of selling and shopping in the second-hand economy, and flexing a little DIY muscle, I was able to turn the room that everyone in our house once avoided, into the room that everyone wants to spend time in. But the big question is… Did I BREAK EVEN? After tallying up the cost of my fab frugal finds, paint and DIY materials, and a few new items, my grand total was… $1,242, which means … I came in UNDER BUDGET! I even had $28 to spare, so essentially, I made a profit from re-designing a room in my home! Break-Even Challenge accepted… and ACCOMPLISHED!

KIMBERLEY’S GUIDE TO
balanced
The essential building blocks to harmonious interiors
D E C O R A T I N G KI M B E R LEY S E LD O N
Balance is Everything
SCALE In residential design, scale usually concerns the relationship between an item or a room, and the human body. In other words, how well do you fit the space? Does the room feel sufficiently cosy for reading or watching television in? Is the chair large enough to comfortably support someone curled up with a book? Is there enough space between the chairs and the armoire for people to pass through comfortably? Does the island and kitchen layout support multiple home chefs or only one?
LIGHTING Because lighting has both a physiological and emotional effect on humans, the quality of light is an essential consideration. Balance, once again, is the key to success. Excessive contrast causes eyestrain while absolute uniformity is monotonous and dull. The requirements for a television room are different from those of a kitchen or home office. A standing floor lamp with an opaque shade will push light down onto a book, making it ideal for
reading. The same light with a sheer shade will disperse light into a wide circle, adding to ambient light. As you consider lighting, it’s critical to aim for a layered scheme that includes ambient or general lighting, task lighting and decorative lighting (those feature lights you want on when you’re having a party).
PATTERN When placing pattern in a space, consider its visual weight and determine where you want balance, and where you might want a focal point. For instance, in an all-white room, black-and-white patterned pillows will throw off the balance but create a focal point. If the identical room also has a baby grand, black piano, the same patterned pillows create visual balance instead. As a general rule, patterned textiles have more visual weight than solid textiles. For instance, a solid pale blue carpet will have less visual impact than a patterned carpet in a similar colour. A balance of pattern creates a quieter space, while an
imbalance of pattern creates more drama. To determine which works for you—quiet or drama—consider the overall mood and atmosphere you want to create. When you want visual drama aim for high contrast. For example, a stunning mid-century modern chair in black leather will disappear against a dark green wall. To really show it off, place it against a white or pale oystercoloured wall. Conversely, if the living room sofa has seen better days, choose a wall colour in a similar shade and the sofa’s impact will be lessened. Remember, balance applies to space planning as well as colour planning. Every item of furniture has a visual weight. You can offset large-scale items such as armoires, pianos, and sofas with a grouping of smaller items. Taking a photo of your efforts (rather than just looking at the room) will allow you to more easily critique your ongoing efforts and perfect your skills. Change things around and compare the images. You’ll find your skill for creating a balanced room setting will improve with practice.
PHOTOGRAPHY: DONNA GRIFFITH
After years of practical experience as an interior design professional, designing, renovating and decorating hundreds of homes, I can tell you this: Balance is everything. In fact, if there’s any design lesson whose mastery is essential, it’s this one. The ability to skillfully harmonize an interior’s essential elements—scale, proportion, light, pattern, and colour—takes practice, but the basics can be learned and improved upon with every project. Here are a few elements to consider as you work through your next decor project.

ven if few of us can afford to take a money-isno-object approach to home decor, we all still crave a little luxury in life. Fortunately, one’s budget doesn’t always have to match one’s appetite for finer things. Here are a few splurges—on a sliding scale—that deliver on both good taste, and great value.
Fusion Mineral Paints
Timorous Beasties’ textile collection
PAINTS AND PAPER WITH PANACHE Wallcoverings offer great value in smaller spaces, such as a foyer or powder room. The same can be said for fabrics used sparingly in window treatments and on furniture. Glasgow-based Timorous Beasties’ textile collection, now available in Canada though NewWall House, is a case in point. Fabric starts at about $125 a yard, and wallpapers at about $155 per double roll. Both have terrific design ROI. New paint formulations pave the way for sophisticated matte finishes, such as the products from Fusion Mineral Paints. The 100-per-cent acrylic paint is made with natural mineral pigments, so colours are rich and saturated. The palette designed by Michael Penney is especially well-conceived and costs $24 for a pint.
FAUX TH ROW A realistic faux-fur throw adds a touch of cruelty-free glamour to any room. Au Lit Fine Linens has a lush mock mink—in inky black or iced tones—for $549. Keep it for a decade and it works out to just $55 a year! If you can’t rationalize that, pick up a warm and fuzzy option from Bouclair like this Foxy Faux-Fur Throw for about $40.

TEXTI LE S THAT TE LEGRAPH LUXU RY Nothing says indulgence quite like a silky velvet. This spring, look for affordable velvet sofas at CB2 that start at about $1,500. On a smaller scale, there’s a velvet ottoman from Montrealbased VdeV in soft taupe or celadon ($234), and cotton-velvet pillows from Urban Barn for $49. For added interest, choose a textured or embossed velvet.
Simons Table Napkins
Urban Barn’s Aspen Table Runner
FLOWE R POWE R Make one chubby arrangement with two bundles from the “half-price” bin at the local supermarket. Or go all out and place a standing order with a florist like Tonic Blooms, which delivers a $41 bouquet wrapped in a signature denim envelope, anywhere in the GTA, often within two hours. Options are relatively limited, but using local flowers ensures they’re all just-picked fresh, which is the biggest treat of all. TABLE MAN N E R S Handsome linens make life more civilized. Treated properly, they also become meaningful hand-me-downs for the generation to come. Designer Paul Semkuley has just launched Lip Service Napkins, an extensive online collection of table linens that includes stunning Liberty print napkins made out of its famous Tana Lawn cotton (set of four, $240). More affordably, Simons has attractive table napkins at $6 each, while Urban Barn’s pretty Aspen table runner sells for just $39.
Turquoise Palace Candle Holders
Lip Service Oyster Collection Tablecloth & Linens WI N DOW-S HOPPI NG Low-cost materials can have a big impact in projects that require lots of yardage. Here, burlap (about $80 for 40 yards of 60-inch wide through HomeTex) was used on draperies, backed by cornflower-blue linen from (trade-only) UltraLuxe Linen—a hot tip from designer William MacDonald, who says a tinted lining elevates the look, and makes them hang better. CAN DLE POWE R The gentle light of candles can cover a multitude of small decor sins. Clustering them in holders creates an effective focal point. Turquoise Palace is a good source (trade and consumer). Mixing styles is fine, but if you stick to one material—glass, wood, bronze—it will look a little more like deliberate design. You can also use spray paint to bring cohesion to an eclectic collection.

Vaughan’s family-run furniture company, Alta Moda, celebrates its milestone 40th anniversary. Editor Silvana Longo sits down with owner Gaetano Colacci to discuss the company’s evolution and some tried-and-true guiding principles that remain with the company since its inception
Spotlight on ALTA MODA FURNITURE SILVANA LONGO: First of all, congratula-
tions on Alta Moda Furniture’s 40th anniversary. You are the second-generation owner and operator, how does your furniture company distinguish itself from others in the GTA? How has the company evolved over the years and what tried-and-true values do you stick with that contribute to your overall success & longevity?
GAETANO COLACCI: Thank you, we
are proud to reach this great milestone. We distinguish ourselves by offering great products, providing excellent service to every client and offering many custom solutions to everything we sell. Our store has evolved quite a bit, we used to be more of a production shop. We would make limited styles of furniture and few options for customization. Now we run more of a boutique, custom shop. We manufacture only after the customer has had 100 per cent input into the plan. We also pride ourselves on our quick delivery times. Most stores are at the mercy of the manufacturer, 10 to 12 weeks, which is industry-standard. We can work with clients sometimes to provide products in as quickly as one week, still with custom options. Our standard production time is between four and six weeks.
SL: It is estimated that 80 per cent of the
furniture in your Concord showroom is made on-site. Your company prides itself on all furniture being made in Canada with brands like Canadel and Brentwood. For the pieces

everyone’s timeline is different. We like to have a minimum of eight weeks for a fully custom item.
GC: Mostly customer feedback. Furniture is awesome because it almost always begins with a previous design. Taking a style or design from an item we have and transforming it into an item with the features the client wants.
SL: The 40-year milestone is a big one, what are your plans for the future? Are other Alta Moda locations in the works? Is there a potential third generation of Alta Moda Furniture with their training wheels on poised to ensure the next 40 years?
SL: Imagine this scenario: A first-time

homeowner needs help with picking the right pieces for their home as this is the first time they are choosing serious, grown-up furniture. I know you have an interactive tool to help customers visualize their space with furniture collections; do you have professional in-person design experts to help in this furniture selection process? How does Alta Moda help curate the right collection for their customers who need help with dressing up their interiors?
Our clients come to us from Montreal to Windsor. People have never been afraid to drive for great products and service. Being a single location store, we can keep control on every order and ensure that every client is treated like family. No third generation yet. Maybe soon!!
GC: Every one of my salespeople can help out the client with floor plan layout and size advice. When it comes to design, we have different specialists for different needs. We are experts in furniture design and cater to the specific needs of each client. SL: Walk me through the custom furniture
service at Alta Moda. How long does it take from concept to product delivery?
GC: It depends on the item. Some items take
months, while others take as little as one week. We try to work with all clients as

How the many details add style and functionality to your kitchen
R
enovating your kitchen is a big undertaking. If you want to make sure you get the most out of your investment, consider hiring a designer to plan and supervise the execution. Most kitchen redesigns require new flooring, electrical and plumbing—as well as a focus on making the space more functional and beautiful— so hiring a designer is definitely step one in the process before you begin discussions with a contractor.
DO YOUR HOMEWORK
When planning a kitchen, it is important to answer practical questions to direct the design. For example, are you a serious chef? Do you have kids at home? Is cooking a family activity? Do you require low-maintenance finishes? What is the overall budget? How storage-intensive are you? Have you begun to look at appliances? Is there an esthetic goal you have in mind? A good designer will ask 100 questions to understand how you will use the space.
SMALL ITEMS, BIG IMPACT
For kitchens, while the overall look and feel is important, the details can really make the difference. Storage accessories
increase the functionality. Countertops add colour and visual texture. Hardware is the ‘jewelry’ of the kitchen and can add a significant amount of pizzazz.
STORAGE
Incorporating trends like, ‘no upper cabinets’ should be considered carefully. While it might look cool, functionality may overrule if your space is small. Magic corners, pullout drawers and trolleys up the ante on convenience and make every inch more accessible. Accessories can increase the budget by thousands of dollars, so it’s worth your time to prioritize where you really need them. Plate holders and cutlery dividers are great to have for drawers, while busy chefs love the magnetic knife holders mounted on the backsplash.
COUNTERTOPS
If you have children, or are a busy chef with little time for maintenance, consider a quartz countertop first. Virtually maintenance-free, these can withstand red wine, hot pots and sharp knives. Colours, patterns and textures are plenty and the marketplace has significantly increased the offering

over the last few years. Not to be confused with quartzite, which is a natural stone, quartz is a composite material that is man-made. Also, granite should be considered. The colours and patterns vary greatly amongst granite types, and the beauty of a natural granite countertop is timeless. However, not all granites are appropriate for the kitchen. Stay away from granites that you typically see on building facades, cemetery headstones and institutional floors.
One idea to weigh carefully is hardware-free, touch-latch cabinets vs. handles and knobs. While modern kitchens look great without visible hardware, busy chefs who lean or bump against cabinets can trigger the touch latches frequently, and this can be easily annoying. On the other hand, certain types of hardware can cause a few pokes and bruises, and depending upon choice, can really increase your budget. The trends that are here to stay include: matte black, gold and brass hardware. Don’t underestimate the beauty of glass and crystal knobs on cabinets where you might want to feature your grandmother’s dish collection.

IDS PREVIEW
IDS
celebrates 20TH
ANNIVERSARY
WITH STAR-STUDDED SPEAKER LINEUP Interior Design Show welcomes Michael Ford, Kathryn M. Ireland, Karim Rashid and Brian Gluckstein to 2018 event
Back to celebrate 20 years of success is North America’s most esteemed design fair, Interior Design Show (IDS), which will be taking over Toronto’s Metro Toronto Convention Centre from January 18-21, 2018. This year’s show will welcome returning favourites and new visionaries to the Caesarstone Stage during its three-day run, based around the concept of Future Forward design thinking. IDS18 is thrilled to announce first-time conference speakers, the hip-hop architect, Michael Ford (United States) and renowned textile designer, Kathryn M. Ireland (United States) as the initial round of confirmed talent coming to Toronto. To pay homage to the event’s 20th anniversary, designers from IDS’ 1997 debut, Karim Rashid (Canada) and Brian Gluckstein (Canada), will join the lineup to share their design journeys.
MICHAEL FORD Wisconsin-based designer, Michael Ford, has devoted his practice to blurring the lines between professional practice and academia. His work is an exploration of the cultural and sociological implications of architecture and urban planning, which was initially sparked by his graduate thesis “Hip Hop Inspired Architecture and Design” from the University of Detroit Mercy. Combined with years of research, Michael has become one of America’s most sought-after lecturers, having given impressive presentations as the keynote at the 2017 American Institute of Architects National Conference on Architecture, and several appearances at various educational institutions. His most recent project, The Universal Hip Hop Museum, will see Michael’s programming and concept development come to life after a series of nationwide community design charrettes with prominent hip hop artists. Michael Ford is the first speaker confirmed to take the stage on Trade Talk Friday (photo: Michael Ford)
KATHRYN M. IRELAND The former actress, clothing designer and filmmaker, England-native, Kathryn M. Ireland also boasts the title of world-renowned interior and textile designer. Her lack of orthodoxy and love of colour come together to create a signature style known for being both comfortable and bohemian. As one of House Beautiful’s Top 100 Designers and as a member of ELLE Decor’s A-list Designers list, it’s no surprise that Kathryn counts Steve Martin, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and David Mamet among her celebrity and tastemaker clientele. Kathryn M. Ireland, the actress turned interior and textile designer, will take to the stage on January 20, 2018, to share her expertise and experience with the Globe Style Saturday crowd (photo: Kathryn M. Ireland)
KARIM RASHID With over 4,000 product designs and 300 awards to his name, Karim Rashid is one of the most prolific designers of his generation. Through his private design studio, Karim has created projects for Pepsi, Audi and, most recently, the Temptation Resort in Mexico. His resumé also boasts award-winning designs for Christofle, Veuve Clicquot and Alessi, democratic products for Umbra, Bobble and 3M, furniture for BoConcept and Nienkamper, lighting for Artemide, and high-tech products for Asus and Samsung. Renowned product and interior designer Karim Rashid joins House & Home’s founder Lynda Reeves on January 21, 2018 (photo: Oscar Valle)
BRIAN GLUCKSTEIN Brian Gluckstein, principal of GlucksteinDesign, is Canada’s national design treasure. The product and interior designer has propelled to the top of the industry with numerous awards for design excellence, including ARIDO Awards for Excellence in residential, commercial, corporate design, as well as numerous features in esteemed publications –Architectural Digest, ELLE Decor and House Beautiful. Brian works between Toronto, South Beach and New York, where he works on both private and public projects, such as the Four Seasons Hotel, Palm Beach. As a regular fixture on national television, Brian has become a staple within the North American design industry. To celebrate the 20th anniversary of IDS, one of the show’s first-ever speakers, Brian Gluckstein, will rejoin the speaker lineup on January 21, 2018 (photo: Naomi Finlay)

FUNCTION before
FORM
L
The building blocks of design always begin with function, beauty is just the cherry on top BY CYNTHIA SODA • PHOTOGRAPHY BY STEPHANI BUCHMAN et’s face it: we’re all drawn to beautiful things. I personally have a knack for coveting the most luxurious item in a store—not unlike many people I know. However, committing the faux-pas of purchasing that very beautiful, very expensive item, only to find that it won’t fit into your space, is something we designers use our trained eye to guard against.
CART BEFORE THE HORSE
Selecting finishes, furniture and accessories is inconsequential if the space lacks function. It’s heartbreaking when I field requests from potential clients, who are halfway through a renovation, asking for help on picking paint colours and cabinet-door styles amidst missed opportunities to add value through sightlines, accent features, or integrated storage. It is the “putting lipstick on a pig” idiom—you can dress it up all you want but the main issues remain unresolved.
FIRST THINGS FIRST
Function is at the forefront of every great designer’s mind. It’s absolutely essential to plan with people and purpose in mind. Once the needs of the client and issues of a space are identified at the outset, every decision made stems from there. Empty nesters, who travel frequently and love to collect and display art, have different needs from a couple with young children and weekly extracurricular activities to attend.
TIP FOR YOUNG FAMILIES: Coffee
tables with drawers to store children’s colouring books and crayons, or ottomans with hidden toy storage, work for families, as well as quartz countertops do to protect against stains. For flooring, try wire-brushed engineered hardwood, or even waterproof, scratch-resistant vinyl-click flooring with that wood look.

M
TIP: To stand the test of time, big purchases like the sofa should be upholstered in a durable, easily cleanable and beautiful finish. Alendel, Maxwell and JF, among other companies, offer versatile, simple-to-clean-andto-care-for fabrics, which have been (or have the option to be) treated with inherent stainrepellents.
PRETTY DYSFUNCTIONAL
Interior design is constantly evolving. Styles change, but function is much more difficult (read: expensive) to modify once it’s been laid out. Sightlines are one of the most important considerations to make. Imagine sitting down to an elegant dinner, and from the table your guests can see the powder room door is open with a glorious view of the toilet. Or think of the parent making dinner, having to run back and forth from the kitchen to the family room in order to keep watch over their toddler playing beyond the wall dividing the spaces. Paint colours, wallpaper and fabrics (no matter how pretty) won’t fix these issues. With a focus on layout and function at the beginning, each of these finishes would enhance the spaces they’re in, instead of acting as a distraction from more serious, underlying issues.
LONG-TERM SUCCESS
When designers put together furniture concepts for a space, each piece is carefully considered in order for all parts to contribute to the whole. Even if it’s not in the clients’ budget to purchase everything at once, they will have a road map to follow in order to build upon their design over time, piece by piece. You can change the cushions, the rug, the accessories when styles change, but as long as the layout works, you will always have a home that is equal parts stylish and functional. S
mall-space living has become a major trend in metropolitans worldwide. Embracing small not only benefits your wallet, but eases cleaning and long-term maintenance. And, with a reduced footprint, this trend is as budget-friendly as it is environmentally friendly. But what exactly qualifies as a small space? And how can you make a home out of such a small house? By most industry standards, small-space living can be defined by apartment condos 500 square feet and under, but don’t let that scare you! Maximizing your space doesn’t mean sacrificing comfort or style. Leading the way in Toronto’s condo market, LUX Design has perfected the art of designing for small-space living. We’ll walk you through their latest York Street condo project, a model example of just how big and bold a small space can be. We’ll point out key design elements, tips and tricks that you can apply to your own space.
IN THE LIVING ROOM
While vertical lines add height, horizontal lines allow the eye to sweep across a room, making it appear larger. This York Street living room boasts a dramatic slat feature wall that not only functions as an attractive piece of art, but has horizontal lines to help visually increase the total width of the area. The linear open weave of the side chair also tricks the eye into seeing beyond that single piece, increasing the overall appearance of the room once again. The element of texture within design helps to visually balance composition as well as create contrast, making your space magazine-ready. Natural-wood elements throughout add warmth and comfort to the seating area and complement the smooth, black marble coffee table in the centre. Pops of greenery also work to bring life to the small space. Keeping your walls a crisp white throughout your condo will help to visually open up the floor plan and allow for opportunities to throw in pops of personality. Here, bold hits of black are incorporated across the apartment to help highlight each individual piece. Remember, in tight spaces, less is more. Allow the pieces you add to be larger in scale, but opt for less items in total.

IN THE KITCHEN
Adaptability is important in small spaces, as is maximizing your seating. In this beautifully bright kitchen, the island maximizes its full potential, hosting multiple seating options that can easily move around to accommodate guests. Shiny surfaces, like the white, high-gloss lacquer cabinets and polished stone backsplash, help create the illusion of expansiveness by reflecting light. You can also play with mixing your metals, aiding to create visual appeal within a small space. Here, gold metal in the lighting is combined with stainless steel in the seating, and brushed aluminum in the range hood. Show off your flair and personal style with fun accent lighting above.

IN THE BEDROOM
Even in a small condo you can still carve out personal space. Turn your bedroom into a comfortable oasis by utilizing colour palettes that speak to you most. The colour blue calls to mind feelings of tranquility and peace, a good but certainly not the only option for your bedroom. This York Street bedroom features a rich navy-blue wall with a soothing colour range of linens and textiles. Again, we used the horizontal lines within the space to help visually expand the room. Utilizing mirror to reflect light is also a great way to enhance any space.
One of the best tips for small-space living is to maximize storage. Use every square inch of built-in shelving and storage opportunities to get organized. Investing in storage is key, but it certainly doesn’t have to break the bank. Check out Ikea’s closet systems for some great idea starters.
SUMMING UP SMALL-SPACE LIVING
Isabelle Boba is the Principal and Founder of LUX Design specializing in creating award-winning, luxurious residential spaces for clients within Toronto, Vancouver and Calgary. luxdesign.ca
So…how can you define your style and make a space your own in such a small footprint? Don’t be afraid to mix textures like wood, stone and fabric to create layers of visual interest. Have fun combining metals like gold, stainless steel and aluminum to enhance the room. Keeping it simple with white walls, but utilizing pops of colour, will speak to your personality while maintaining a balanced and expansive space. Try using horizontal lines to expand a room and don’t forget to maximize your storage space. For a visual reference, use this York Street condo as a guiding tool for designing your very own small space.

THINK SMALL
Condo and tiny-home dwellers need to find compact or multi-tasking appliances and furniture
A
PRODUCTS THAT MEASURE UP
All of which adds up to having to think compact—or multi-purpose—when renovating small spaces. Luckily, appliance manufacturers have recognized this trend and are making products to fit the bill. And condo-sized doesn’t
have to mean no-name, budget offerings. Home-chef favourite, Wolf has 24"-wide ovens and induction cooktops in its lineup, while Bosch boasts an 18"-wide fridge. Other appliances are true multi-taskers, such as Panasonic’s four-in-one 1.2-cu.ft. stainless-steel oven that combines steam, convection, microwave, and grill cooking all-in-one built-in unit. There are also two-in-one washerdryers that handle both tasks in one unit. Even the kitchen sink can be a multi-tasker. Kohler designed its Prolific sink with small spaces specifically in mind. The 33" x 17¾" basin comes with five accessories, including a bamboo cutting board and a dishwasher-safe colander, all of which you can store right in the sink basin when not in use.
MURPHY MAKES A COMEBACK
Efficient use of space extends beyond the kitchen. People of my generation may remember Murphy beds as a part of the punchline from old black-andwhite comedies where someone gets folded up into the wall. But by saving (extremely) valuable floor space during the day, Murphy beds have again become a popular and practical sleeping option. And it’s not just beds that tuck away. I’ve seen sideboards that fold out into extra serving space, dining tables with extensions that slide away when not in use, and closet organizers that can hold dozens of pairs of shoes in a relatively small space. Finally, don’t forget the space that sliding pocket doors can save. Designing and furnishing a small space requires careful planning. But if it’s done right, you can really live large.

couple of years ago, I wrote about the growing trend of tiny houses: Residences that are only a few hundred square feet in total, often built on wheels. Cost-effective, yes, but not very practical for most people. But even with the recent decline in housing prices, the average detached home in Toronto still goes for more than $1-million, and semi-detached homes aren’t far behind. As a result, for many people, condos have become the default starter home. Another recent trend has been that the condos they build today keep getting smaller than the ones built in the past. While some of Toronto’s older condos have three bedrooms spread across 1,200 sq.ft. or more, most new condos are one-bedroom or bachelor units crammed into half that space, or less.

HOME
organization Organized and orderly rooms not only look good, they’re good for you BY JIM CARUK
I
hate seeing a mess. On a jobsite, piles of trash and jumbled materials aren’t just an eyesore, they’re a safety hazard for me and my crew. The same goes for around the home. Mounds of junk spilling off of every surface is a tripping hazard, and scientists have shown that messy spaces actually stress us out. But shoving everything into cupboards and drawers isn’t an efficient solution. As they say, a place for everything and everything in its place.
KITCHEN PLANNER
BED, BATH, AND BEYOND
Closets tend to be the great dumping ground in the house. That’s why there are entire companies dedicated to closet organization. But if consultation fees just aren’t in the budget, there are a number of (pardon the pun) off-the-shelf options that any reasonably skilled DIYer can install. Nobody likes a cramped, cluttered bathroom. One way to save a bit of space is to install a wall-mounted toilet, where the water tank is hidden between the studs. A vanity mirror that opens up to a recessed shelving unit is a no brainer. And, of course, a small shower stall takes up a lot less room than a shower–tub combination. If you’re sticking with the tub, consider building some shelving into the space at the back —away from the showerhead—so you can store towels, shampoo, and other toiletries.
Finally, don’t forget the space you may be wasting in the utility room. You may have room for some wall-mounted shelving, or a standalone unit that you can use to organize cleaning supplies, bulk bags of toilet paper and paper towel, or even non-perishable pantry items.
PARKING PAD
I’m always amazed how many people have garages that they can’t actually park a car in, because they’re crammed full of junk. Often, all that’s needed is a little bit of shelving and some planning to better utilize the space. One of the bulkiest items we store in our garages is a set of winter tires. Rather than eating up a corner of the garage, invest in a wall-mounted rack so you can get them off the ground and out of the way. Bicycles can also eat up a lot of floor space. But not if they’re hung from hooks in the ceiling or on the wall. Buying a simple PVC storage shelf is a great way to organize your garden tools, leaf bags, flowerpots, and so on. And a couple of hooks screwed into the studs are great for keeping shovels and other long-handled tools organized and off the ground. Not up to the task of designing your own garage storage? In Renovation Contractor magazine, we recently profiled a small company, Nuvo Garage, which specializes in organizing garages. The owner, Rick Scully, has worked on everything from adding a few shelves to tidying up a small, single-car garage, to a complete $80,000 garage makeover.
PHOTOGRAPHY: BIGSTOCK.COM
When designing a kitchen, there’s usually a fair bit of wasted or underused space in a corner cabinet. People usually figure they’ll put bulky countertop appliances at the back, and only pull them out when needed. But, left out of sight, they’re usually not top of mind and get forgotten about. Instead, I recommend investing in some sort of swinging, lazy Susanstyle shelving so you can pull out the items from the back, making them more accessible. Whether you bought them from a big-box store, or had them custom-made, most kitchen cabinets come with adjustable shelving. But most people tend to set them up when they first move back in, then never change them again. I’d say it’s worth taking an afternoon to play around with your dishes and pantry items to see if you can set up the shelving more efficiently.

WINTER RENOVATION B RYA N T U C K E Y
The woes of a winter renovation are vanquished with proper planning and working closely with a professional renovator
W
CLEAR THE WAY
Major renovations often require you to move out of your home for a few weeks. To ensure that your contractor has easy access to and from your home, you’ll need to make arrangements for shoveling snow and salting steps in your absence. Some renovation companies may offer the service but you’ll need to discuss it in advance. It may come at an added cost, so make sure it is noted in your renovation contract.
WATER HAZARD
When you move out of your home, it will likely cool down significantly even if the heat is still on. This increases the chance of water freezing inside your pipes, which could cause them to burst. To minimize the risk, have a plumber heat the water line coming into your house, or call your municipality to shut the water off at the street side.
BE A GOOD NEIGHBOUR
Homeowners doing a winter renovation in semi-detached houses or townhomes
need to be mindful of how it may affect their neighbours. These types of homes have shared walls, and if the temperature in your home drops significantly, it can affect the comfort level of those living on the other side of the wall. If the shared wall is not properly insulated, talk to your renovator about installing some temporary insulation to prevent heat loss. This is another issue that should be discussed in advance as it may result in additional fees.
FLAT ROOF SAFETY MEASURES
Special precautions may be required when renovating homes with flat roofs. Major renovations or additions may compromise the structural durability of the home. Snow can build up on the roof, and if your home is not structurally finished, it may not hold up the weight. For an added fee, your renovator can have someone shovel the snow or have an electrician install a specialized heater. After the renovation, you can choose whether to remove the heater or leave it to prevent snow permanently.
It is very important that your contract outline the full scope of work and all associated costs. Avoid renovators who urge you to forego a written contract. It’s a sign that you are not working with a professional. Verbal agreements make it hard for you to hold your renovator accountable for sub-par work, and you will not have a point of reference if there is a conflict over payment. Make sure you always work with a professional renovator. There are hundreds of them across the GTA. A good place to find one is at renomark.ca—home of the national RenoMark program. All RenoMark renovators agree to abide by a code of conduct, which holds them to a number of obligations. In addition to providing a written contract, they offer a minimum two-year warranty, are covered by at least $2 million worth of liability insurance and carry all applicable licenses and permits. Your home is your largest asset, so it deserves a professional, no matter what time of year it is.

inter might seem like an unusual time to undertake a renovation but, with the right knowledge and a bit of preparation, it can be a great time to add value to your home. “The secret to a successful winter renovation is good planning and working closely with your renovator,” says Sam Lapidus, RenoMark renovator and chair of BILD’s Renovation and Custom Builder Council. Talking to your renovator in advance about potential challenges can help you save time and money in the long run. Snow and cold weather are two of the biggest factors in a winter renovation and they require precautionary measures so nothing is left to chance.

BIRDING 101
The do’s and don’ts to ensure the longevity of our fair-feathered friends
O
ne in four Canadians buy bird food and/or consume ‘birding’ products. The average amount spent is $1,000 per year. If that sounds crazy, count me as one of the crazy ones. With 14 feeding stations on my property, I spend a lot of time and money providing sustenance to my local bird population. Most Canadian bird lovers live with the fantasy that we feed them to help the little darlings along the way. They need us. Not true. If all of us hung up our feeders in the garage, and stopped feeding the local bird population, they would be fine. We feed them to bring them to us: they are our entertainment.
REALITY CHECK
However, the part about them ‘being just fine’ is not accurate. According to Bird Studies Canada (BSC), the country’s foremost authority on the subject, our bird population is anything but ‘fine.’ There are many bird species in decline. The population of eastern meadowlarks, chimney swifts, barn swallows and nighthawks are all in trouble, if the numbers mean anything. Across Canada, four bird species in 10 are in some form of long-term decline, some of them quite seriously.
After years of reviewing the facts, Bird Studies Canada has determined that birds are an excellent ‘indicator’ of environmental health and trends. BSC uses their now famous ‘citizen science’ models to help them determine how many birds are out there, one species at a time. Here are some of the facts, courtesy of Bird Studies Canada: Birds eat enormous amounts of seeds, fruits, insects and invertebrates. Changes in bird population numbers often reflect changes in less visible forms of life in nature. Put another way, a decline in some bird species may allow for an unnatural outbreak of certain insect infestations. A farm without a hawk or other raptor hovering over the fields will have far more rodents prowling around. Birds are a ‘canary in the environmental coal mine.’ For example, the dramatic decline of the bald eagle population, two generations ago, was an indicator of the effects of the chemical DDT on our natural landscape. Once humans were alerted to it, we mobilized to change our behaviour.
PERILS & PROACTIVE STEPS
Cats. For all of the discussion about how birds meet their demise at the ‘hands of man,’ none is more impactful than cats. I am not suggesting that you should get rid of your cat, but be mindful of the impact that a cat with claws can have

in your yard and neighbourhood. Consider not letting your cat out the door, or limiting their time outdoors to the night hours when bird activity is low. Plant native shrubs and trees, especially those that produce fruit. To maintain a healthy bird population, plant serviceberry, mountain ash, American highbush cranberry, and many native perennials that can stand upright over winter to provide food and shelter for birds.
WHAT CAN I DO?
PROJECT FEEDER WATCH
Another great way to get engaged and help is to count the birds on your feeder and report them to BSC on their website. Project Feeder Watch was instigated by Bird Studies Canada in 1976. Through a partnership with Cornell Lab of Ornithology as their U.S. partner, they have expanded the program to cover the entire continent. The program occurs from November through April (so there is no better time to get started than now). For details of both programs, visit birdscanada.org.

You can help to build a database of information about birds and the bird population by joining the Great Backyard Bird Count, February 16 to 19, 2018. Take 15 minutes per day (or more) to count the birds and species in your yard or community (you can take a walk through a local park or conservation area if you like, don’t restrict yourself to your backyard).
Report the numbers that you record on the Bird Studies Canada website. This information is aggregated across the country, as it has been for many years. With these numbers, BSC can determine the increase or decline of bird populations across the country.

An architect, designer and builder outline how to create project synergies Embarking on the design and development of a new home is a big decision. It requires a
Q& A
Firstly, what makes the perfect custom home client for you? (i.e. style preference, personal character type, or other significant detail) Architect Brad: A variety of tastes and styles is fine. Ideally the client has trust in the ideas and expertise of the architect and and allows freedom of creativity. Designer Meghan: Our ideal client seeks to follow the design intent for creating a seamless esthetic, versus a choppy and piecemeal one often found through design on-the-fly type projects. Builder Jim: The client is someone that understands challenges arise during any project. Nothing is seamless, you need to break an egg to make an omelette…so to speak. There has to be trust as you are working on their

clear outline of goals, the assembly of specialists, the management of egos, budgets and a pinch of added stress. Some experience greater success at it than others. To help guide those looking to undertake a custom home project of their own, we talked with the architect, Brad Abbott, Abbott Design Ltd, designer, Meghan Carter, Meghan Carter Design, and the project manager, Jim Cunningham, Eurodale Developments on a recent project we collaborated with. By connecting, we gain insight on how they help guide their clients to create both a beautiful finished project, and a smooth process, all while working together. Sounds impossible, right? It’s really not.
behalf at all times. Most importantly, respect and value for our role in the process. Do you prefer to have the architect, designer and builder involved along all steps of the process, or just in their defined segment? Architect Brad: The architect is integral to the overall design of the space, including the interior, such as: trim and door packages, post and beams and the overall structure. Continuity between the exterior and the interior can be critical. Involving the interior designer and builder early ensures a shared vision, as well as cost implications for the owners to use in their approval of the design direction. If possible, involve all parties at key design and budgeting milestones in advance of the build.

Designer Meghan: The clients need to understand the roles of each party and use them accordingly to obtain ultimate value. With increased collaboration throughout come the best ideas and the smoothest process from design to execution. If the architect is not doing the interiors, the interior designer should be involved at the first design stage to ensure details (such as window placements) work with furniture placement and flow on the inside. Builder Jim: The involvement of all three is key when something is identified, which will not allow for the execution of the original design intent. While we do not require our hands held, we understand our role in the process is to execute the vision, and if it’s not possible, we are not tasked to design the solution—though we surely will make suggestions, the architect or designer will need to be the one to recommend and design the ultimate change for the homeowner to approve.
PHOTOGRAPHY: VALERIE WILCOX (EXTERIOR SHOTS), PETER SELLAR (INTERIORS)
Introducing each other – when is it appropriate? Architect Brad: If retained first, we prefer to do high-level budgets upon creation of floorplans and elevations. We recommend contacting two to three design-build firms for a meet-and-greet and reputation review. This review includes historically guided budgets, not trade/ supplier firmed pricing. It can help guide final designs and set the relationship path. Designer Meghan: In years past, people would hire the builder first, then reach for the designer. This has now flipped, for the better. Once floorplans are about 85 per cent complete, a lighting plan and scope myhomepage.ca
072-74_R_BC_FM18.indd 73
document has been created, we then look for one to two contractors to ballpark. They can then scale back, if needed, while it is still relatively cheap to design. Builder Jim: As early in the process as possible, so that everyone can understand the goal from a space, style and budget perspective, as well as help the owners create a list of their priorities, which will govern how we allocate their budget throughout the project. It also helps build the team relationship approach if everyone starts from the first phase. What to do when issues arise vs. that which is planned for? Architect Brad: Don’t cut the architect and/or designer out of the conversation, just because they aren’t on site that day. A misguided or misdirected solution to a perceived problem can horribly impact the overall design. Keeping all involved can avoid diluted projects and relationships. Designer Meghan: Start the build off with a project walk with all team members to try and flush these out at the get-go. Failing that, continue that method in the spirit of collaboration to ensure continuity of ideas and process for the benefit of the homeowner and the project! Builder Jim: I would personally call the architect and ask them how they would like to handle the situation. Sometimes this can be flushed out by phone. Failing that, I would call an on-site meeting. If the client is unable to attend, I would brief them on the meeting and get their final approval on decisions before making the change, and document it. RENO & DECOR February/March 2018 :: 73

DESIGN/BUILD EXPERT
EXPERT-SPECIFIC QUESTIONS “Working with an
architect and interior designer provides another level of design, which raises the profile of the project.” -BUILDER JIM
Architect Brad, you work about 50 per cent in the city and 50 per cent in cottage country in Collingwood—what are the differences for you? AB: In the country, clients tend to be slightly older, more experienced and are often moving out of the city. Typically, my country clients are better heeled and are more relaxed, having undertaken a few renos in the past. City homes offer unique challenges, such as this site with tight confines, whereas more rural settings provide ample views, along with more siting process to capitalize on topography, prevailing winds and lake views. Designer Meghan, you acted as designer here, but you also undertake permit drawings and some project management duties for clients—how does this process differ for you? DM: We know to enter with a low ego when working in collaboration as everyone at the table is skilled at what they do, hence their reputation and why they were retained. When we run from start to finish for the client, the project has more of a singular vision—our vision—
which can make things easier but can also be limiting. When working as a group versus working independently, a clear outline of roles, responsibilities and deliverables of each member is a necessity to avoid overlap or conflict between professionals, which confuse clients. Builder Jim, you acted as the project manager on this build, but your firm also undertakes an in-house Design-Build approach to projects—how does this process differ for you? BJ: Our design process is more function-based in nature. Working with an architect and interior designer provides another level of design, which raises the profile of the project. It also tends to remove some of the copycat DIY design direction that is so prevalent in the industry. It’s not the right solution for everyone, however, and the Design-Build method works very well to help people undertake their dreams of expanding, updating or recreating their space to suit their tastes or needs. About 75 per cent of what we build is designed in-house, but we love building interesting and challenging projects designed by other professionals, too.

What the world needs now, according to Pantone, is Ultra Violet—a blue-based purple that takes our awareness and potential to a higher level. I have always perpetuated the power of purple, and this year, I am happy the colour institute concurs. “Complex and contemplative, Ultra Violet suggests the mysteries of the cosmos, the intrigue of what lies ahead, and the discoveries beyond where we are now,” says executive director, Leatrice Eiseman. Pantone’s pick of enigmatic purple, which has long been symbolic of counterculture, à la Prince and the glam rock of David Bowie—also speaks to the pleasing calm of Provence and its purple flower fields. It’s an all-purpose purple!! This provocative yet calming hue has burst onto the colour scene from fashion, beauty, food and, of course, our beloved interiors. In home decor, it can transform a room into one of extraordinary self-expression, or conversely its polish can tone down a room with subdued, modern pairings. Ultra Violet makes a statement in any space, whether it’s one of tradition and elegance or unexpected boldness.
