This time of year always brings back a lovely memory I have of a trip we took to the lowlands of Scotland many years ago. We were staying in a beautiful old inn owned by Canadians. It was the fall and we were noticing the days were shorter than at home. The owners of the inn told us that in a few weeks the days would be so short that it would start getting dark by mid-afternoon, and so they would draw the heavy velvet drapes on the one-foot thick stone-window openings, light fires in all the rooms and pour a wee spot of scotch with the afternoon tea tray. Not great for the health I’m sure, but it sounded like a cosy winter ritual—making the most of a dark situation you could say. Of course, we joked those long, dark days are why the Scots are such ‘dower’ people, and drinking is such a big part of the culture. But people drink a lot in cultures steeped in year-round sunshine too, so who knows? It’s definitely nice to make the best of all of the seasons in Canada as we don’t have much say in the matter. This issue features bathrooms, the most interior and private of all the rooms in the house. Whether your bathroom is old, new or you’re lucky enough to be renovating, consider it a chance to create a restorative retreat within your own home. A personal place to draw the curtains, be quiet and still, even for just a short time, as the rest of the world keeps spinning, winter and summer, daylight and dark, 24/7.

W
e’re at that transitionary time of year when our focus moves from the exterior of our home to the interior. I’m not just talking about taking the screens off and cleaning the windows, or putting the lawn furniture away. I’m talking about our mental attitude, interests and how we use our homes as well. I find the year divides into two parts. The summer and surrounding months are about outward activities with lots of people interaction: summer parties; weekends with friends and family at the cottage; holidays away to busy locales; backyard barbecues; evenings sitting outside with neighbours or on restaurant terraces; even the music is different— fun summer tunes made for parties, picnics and road tripping. The winter and surrounding months are better for more inward activities. It’s a time to recharge and catch up on things that we let slide over the summer months while the sun was shining: reading; crafts and DIY projects; trying recipes and cooking comforting meals of simmering dishes on the stove all day; small dinner parties and gatherings; going to movies or watching series on TV; quiet evenings by the fire.

SERENITY NOW BY SILVANA LONGO
Beyond the fixtures and finishes, the rise of turning bathrooms into a soothing retreat is only getting stronger. From the big choices to the small, here are our picks to create a little zen at home.
Nothing adds warmth and luxury to a bathroom like gold hardware and finishes juxtaposed with a modern grey palette. Even the choice of a mirror can elevate the beauty and function of an ensuite. A simple design, the thick-plated bevelled mirror is framed in aluminum and has sturdy wall brackets allowing it to tilt and stay put at the perfect angle. Shown here in brass, it is available in antique bronze, polished nickel, chrome, or satin nickel. Kensington Pivot Rectangular Mirror, starts at $324; potterybarn.com

The collaboration between Guthrie & Baird creates a singular sconce where planets align and the perfect light emanates. Guthrie’s precision cut glass is Saturn-like sublime, shedding a softened light on the saturnine. The LED-light source is concealed behind this circle. Baird 1 light: $129; 2 light: $249, 3 light: $339; 4 light: $339; Guthrie Sconce is $390. unionlightingandfurnishings.com

fronts for young designers and quaint little boîtes being replaced with mass merchants of fashion and furniture, and fast-food chains. Sundberg started looking west with envy. “I kept saying to John, that’s where it’s cool now, with all the great little shops, while our area was becoming like an outdoor mall,” she says. In 1995, they moved to a new location at 145 Tecumseh Avenue, west of Bathurst and south of Queen—kitty corner to the historic Ukrainian Baptist Church, which opened its doors at Tecumseh Avenue and Richmond Street in 1897 as the Memorial Baptist Church.
“Either I am doing something right, or I am a glutton for punishment,” she says. Since then, Urban Mode has become a destination for designers, architects and homeowners looking for beautiful, well-made contemporary design. It’s a fun place to visit, turning a very handsome face to the street with a tidy prefab addition knitted on to what used to be a glass-fronted, three-bay garage. Light spills into a gallery-like space filled with furniture, art, and accessories from such brands as Chilewich, Modfire and Pablo Lighting. It’s also the go-to spot in Toronto for wares from Blu Dot Furniture, the much-respected Minneapolis-based designer and maker of modern home furnishings. Most recently, Sundberg has been adding stars of Scandinavian design to the mix. There’s Muuto, (it means “fresh perspective” in Finnish), which focuses

t was in the late ‘70S that a previously unlovely and unremarkable stretch of Queen Street, east of Spadina, began to emerge as the raucous, rebellious heart of a local punk scene and vibrant arts community. That’s when Myrlene Sundberg, a young interior designer, and John Palchinski, a painter, decided it was the perfect spot to open Urban Mode, a tiny, funky store that sold gifts, children’s toys, cards and accessories. As time marched on, gentrification reared its well-groomed head, and the duo watched picturesque second-hand shops, store-

on the enduring esthetics, functionality, and craftsmanship found in Scandinavian design, and Softline, a global brand out of Denmark that collaborates with international designers. Another Danish company, Normann Copenhagen, creates furniture, sculptural lighting, textiles and home accessories that are both timeless and contemporary. There’s no arguing, of course, that change hasn’t also come to Queen West. Lots of it has been good. The Centre for Addiction and Mental Health, for example, underwent a massive renovation and expansion that includes affordable housing, retail, and treatment facilities for those with addictions and mental illness. The independent streak remains, represented by retailers such as Quasi Modo, which also sells modern furniture and quirky vintage pieces. Sundberg loves the vibrant nature of the strip and the mix of retail and restaurants: when she needs a hit of coffee, she ventures over to Jimmy’s at 735 Queen West. “I love that there’s no attitude, and they make a great Chai tea.” For excellent pizza, she recommends Terroni at 720 Queen West. “If, that is, you can stand the noise!” she says. One place Sundberg and her husband keep going back to is Le Select Bistro, the lovely French bistro nearby at Wellington and Spadina. “It’s always perfect, and never disappoints.” Just like, some might say, a visit to Urban Mode.
Always on the lookout for emerging contemporary design, Sundberg discovered Muuto, the Finnish company that makes this unfussy, chic suite.

KIMBERLEY’S GUIDE TO
POWDER ROOM PERFECTION A diminutive space where daring decorating details thrive
TAKE A POWDER
It’s probably the smallest room in your house, but its potential for impact is huge. Frequented by family and friends, the powder room enjoys a central location and significant role in most floor plans. Thanks to its diminutive scale and precise purpose, even do-it-yourself decorators feel confident outfitting this busy room. For many professional designers, myself included, the powder room provides a unique opportunity to create an experience; providing those who visit with submersion into something divine.
CONSIDER THE MOOD AND GO BOLD
As with every decorating project, begin with a mood or atmosphere in mind, however, feel free to be bolder than you might normally as the powder room is a transition space—people enter and exit relatively quickly so its impact needs to be immediate rather than subtle. The powder room is an ideal location for whimsical or dramatic wallpaper. A pattern you might grow tired of in the family room, where you linger, may create an impactful impression in the
powder room. I prefer to paper all the walls (and sometimes the ceiling) in a small space and I would never consider a feature wall in the powder room, as it typically throws off visual balance, or worse—makes a feature of the toilet. Unless you are a skilled paper-hanger, it’s best to hire a professional installer who can align pattern and address difficult-to-reach places such as the area behind the toilet.
ENHANCE THE MOOD WITH LIGHTING
To provide guests (and family members) with the most flattering light in the powder room, make sure to include sconces on either side of a mirror (assuming you have one over the sink). Placing light fixtures at eye level helps eliminate harsh shadows, which appear when lights are placed overhead. Paint or paper any back plates to light fixtures with the same treatment as the wall so the plates visually disappear. You can also include an overhead light fixture for general ambiance, but make sure it’s on a dimmer switch so it doesn’t overpower any decorative lighting.
ACCESSORIZE
An attractive display of artwork completes the decorating. Choose images that are easy to see up-close, as this room is most often small in scale. A delicate watercolour or fine photograph is a good choice. The powder room’s final touches typically include an attractive selection of soap dispenser, hand lotion and a scented candle. In addition, an attractive towel holder makes using the powder room a pleasure.

mbarking on a renovation of a master ensuite bathroom for a Richmond Hill couple was a careful balance of modern and classic elements. At almost 30 years old, the existing bathroom was dated, leaking and had an odd configuration that didn’t make the most of the space. There was an incredibly small shower in one corner, and a very large toilet room opposite it. One large window was somewhat inaccessible because a large Jacuzzi tub was placed in front of it. The existing vanity was large, but didn’t offer effective storage solutions. Before developing the design, a budget was created and outlined all the costs of the plumbing fixtures, custom vanity, tiles, lighting, mirrors, glass, demolition, construction and accessories. A large four-piece bathroom with custom millwork typically ranges from $50,000 to $75,000.
GROUND ZERO
First, all fixtures and existing tiles were removed. The bathroom was reconfigured to enlarge the shower by moving the door from the bedroom, in turn shrinking the toilet room. During design, we decided to create a feature wall and locate a large soaker tub in front of it. The vanity then became a feature element as you walk in the room, and it also freed up the space in front of a large window.

The custom floating vanity not only increases the visual expanse of the space, it was designed to also make storage efficient and easy to reach. The storage options are ample including large drawers, a storage tower, and adjacent to the shower a bench was
added with drawers for towel storage and seating. In the toilet room, a discreet storage cabinet located between the wall studs tucks away the supply of toilet paper.
MODERN & INVITING
The homeowners wanted a more modern look to their bathroom, but didn’t want it be cold and sterile. A classic Carrera marble in a modern 3D-hexagonal pattern was sourced for the feature wall behind the soaker tub. As well, a smaller hexagonal pattern was used in the shower for the floor and accent.
LAYER YOUR LIGHTING
Lighting was very important in this solution and LED mirrors were used as well as new

ceiling lights, decorative lighting, night lighting and also accent lighting for the feature wall. The lighting under the vanity is on an occupancy sensor to act as a night-light. We also included a night-light on an occupancy sensor in the toilet room. Benjamin Moore’s Early Frost was used on the wall, which brought out the grey tones in the marble. The cabinetry was finished in high-gloss white and Pure White Caesarstone was used for the countertop. A lovely petite Briolette pendant light from LBL Lighting hangs from a wall canopy between the mirrors and adds a bit of glamour to the space. A neutral floor of Italian porcelain tile offers a cost-effective and non-slip solution.

ath renovations are, in many cases, the most personal of home improvements, simply because the bathroom is the most personal of rooms. It’s here that you are at your most private; it’s perhaps the only place where you can completely escape from the outside world. Renovating your bath is the perfect opportunity to completely indulge your own tastes and needs, even if you share it with other family members—whether you crave comfort and safety, pampering, or a room of your very own away from the demands of a hectic life. The three stunning baths here are all special because each one was designed specifically for its individual owners’ desires and tastes. Perhaps you’ll find something here to inspire your own custom-tailored refuge.

SLEEK AND MASCULINE Designer Evelyn Eshun was tasked with making the main bathroom in a contemporary home more masculine than its original pink-and-mulberry colour scheme, since it would primarily be used by the couple’s 13-yearold son, and to replace a rather imposing corner tub and shower with two separate fixtures, without physically enlarging the room. Removing the space-hogging corner tub immediately freed up space. Eshun replaced it with a sleek glass-walled shower, and lined its inner walls with 24x24-inch tiles in a more masculine, matte-finish pale grey. For design zing, there’s a horizontal “racing stripe,” about one-quarter down from the ceiling, of tiny ½-by-1-inch glass mosaics. The new open feeling was further enhanced by oversize 18x36-inch porcelain floor tiles that resemble polished cement, and by floating the vanity above the floor. With its quarter-cut walnut face, and a grey quartz countertop that tones with the floor tiles and rich grey-toned walls,
it’s almost exactly the same size as the old vanity—but its combination of drawers and cabinets allows for more (and better organized) storage. Choosing just the right shape of tub, which went on the wall directly opposite the vanity, required a bit more thought. “Oval tubs are beautiful, but they take up more room,” says Eshun, “and we didn’t want a rectangular one, because the corners can be sharp. Then we found the perfect combination: a tub with straight sides and round ends.” To give the tub wall a bit of presence, another wide-racing stripe, this time vertical and in an off-black matte porcelain tile, runs from the floor up to the ceiling directly behind the tub. Though the room hasn’t grown in size, it feels much larger, thanks to cleaner, more neutral tile work and a more intelligent use of the room’s limited space. After all, “The bath is where you are at your most private,” says Eshun, “so it’s very important to make it functional and comfortable.”

O L D WO R L D E L E GA NC E Yvonne Whelan’s master bath update not only adds the serenity and space the homeowners craved, but provides instant calm each time they enter it, using several types of marble for a variety of soothing effects. After many years, the clients had had enough of their old bathroom, with its boxed-in tub, cramped shower and dated ’80s earth tones. They wanted the new bath to impart a serene, spa-like mood, and a layout that was open and well organized enough to allow two busy people to get ready together in the morning. “Simply removing the tub box and shower freed up a surprising amount of space,” says Whelan. In their place, she installed a gracefully sculptured freestanding tub, and a short wall dividing the WC from the rest of the bath, adding privacy without enclosure. She relocated the shower closer to the vanity, where its glass “windows” and inner walls of Carrara marble—which continues along the back wall into the WC alcove —keep things visually connected.
Lighting was carefully chosen to brighten and maintain a clean, unified look. Over the tub is a circular fixture with a gold fluted rim and translucent, onyx-like glass; the vanity mirror is inset with a pair of low-key, semi-circular sconces with stainless-steel trim that visually double the light and pick up the white and metal touches in the room. The vanity itself, with its roomy, well-organized drawers, adds plenty of storage and elbow room for two. But the pièce de resistance is the inlaid “area rug,” of one-inch grey-and-white marble octagons, framed with deep-grey slimline tiles, in the centre of the room; natural variations in the marble give it a beautiful, almost handwoven effect. Walls painted a soothing grey with blue-green undertones pick up the soft tones of the marble and complete the serene mood. “Marble can sometimes be a bit finicky compared to other stones,” Whelan admits.,“but the effect is just so intoxicating.”

TIMELESS CLASSIC This sleek, contemporary bath by XTC Design’s Erica Westeroth addresses the needs of an older couple who are downsizing, while working around some common condo givens: a gloomy dropped ceiling, and unmovable plumbing outlets. “Raising the ceiling, given that there was only so much height, required a bit of sleight of hand,” laughs Westeroth. Removing the ceiling drop and installing shallower-than-normal pot lights, as well as slimmer exhaust ducts, allowed her to gain just enough height to relieve the cramped feeling. The old tub had been large and difficult to climb into and out of. Westeroth replaced it with a new tub and separate glass-walled shower enclosure side by side along one wall. A shallow quartz-composite deck in soft taupe extends behind the tub to form a comfy bench inside the shower; at the other end, the deck turns around the corner behind the tub and widens into a floating seat with deep-storage drawers underneath, and a tall

cabinet on one side. The vanity quartz-composite counter provides space to spread out, and wide storage drawers make it easy to store and retrieve items. Built-in mirrored cabinets slide up and open vertically at a touch. Many of the room’s details are more than visually beautiful. Since the homeowners plan to stay here for many years, the bath will serve the couple’s changing needs as they grow older. The high-contrast, white quartz facing on the tub makes its edges easy to see, while faucet handles and recessed vanity pulls are easy to operate and eliminate accidental bumps. The shower threshold is only a few centimetres high; a hand-held shower bar as well as rain showerhead offers a choice of a standing or sitting shower, with a grab bar to help ease up from a sitting position. And non-slip matte floor tiles, along with a variety of matte and gloss finishes on the walls and other surfaces, add beauty and visual interest as well as secure footing.

athroom and kitchen renovations are wonderful ways to increase the value and enjoyment of your home. It’s always exciting to find new innovations for those rooms because they are, perhaps, the most used in your home. We discovered a handful of new innovations, along with some improvements on the tried-and-true, recently at the International Builders Show and the Kitchen and Bath Show in Las Vegas. Here are 10 fab new finds:
1
2
1 SOLID SURFACE WALLS
In the past, people showered once or twice a week so tiles and grout had time to dry out. Now people shower once or twice a day, which can lead to mould and mildew issues. Solid surfaces like Silestone are seamless and beautiful. You can also use the same material to create a vanity and clad the cabinets.
2 BIDET SEAT
There is nothing like being able to have a little bath every time you use the bathroom. You used to need to do that in a separate unit; however, the Toto Washlet has the whole thing built into the seat. It’s a spa-like experience with wash-and-dry features, plus lots of adjustability to suit everyone.
3
LIGHTING SCULPTURES Good lighting is important yet tough to find for the bathroom. Hubbardton Forge offers a selection of fantastic fixtures that are as beautiful turned off as they are on.
4
HEATED FLOORS Heated floors have been with us for some time. Once you’ve experienced them, they’re hard to live without. The Nuheat Mats are custom built and can heat showers and shower benches or the whole bathroom. The system is now even more energy-efficient as its SIGNATURE Thermostat is WiFi-enabled and works with the Nest Thermostat, turning itself on or off automatically based on home occupancy. Social consciousness and luxurious comfort is the perfect combo.

5 BODY JETS
Body jets have been a relaxing feature for a while. The introduction of a spinning head by Riobel means you don’t have to move while in the shower to get that awesome spa therapy.
6 COMBO SHOWER HEAD
Some in the family like a waterfall shower head while others like the rain-head effect. With the combo head from Riobel, you get the best of both worlds and the whole family is happy.
7 GOLD FAUCETS
There was a time when gold faucets were hard to find. These days it’s hard to find a manufacturer that doesn’t have gold in its collection. Unlike the shiny and brassy gold of the 1980s, 2016 is most certainly matte and classy.
8 3D PRINTED FAUCET
DXV has launched a faucet that has an open space in the neck of it. When turned on, the water magically
flows from the spout. Like wireless was to the Internet, there is just space where water should flow to get to the spout.
9
3D TILES Texture is an excellent way to create visual interest in a room, particularly in a small space like a powder room. These Ann Saks 3D Tiles add another layer to the function and colour by offering texture. Walls with dimension, along with colour, touch yet one more of the senses and make your bathroom experience that much more enriching.
10 WINDOWS AS WALLS
Homeowners try to obscure the windows for privacy while they love the light. In many condos, one whole wall can be a window. One of the trends we see are vanities in front of windows with suspended mirrors. You get all the light, privacy and the opportunity to make excellent use of the whole space.

he prestigious, family-oriented Grandview neighbourhood has long been one of Toronto’s best kept real-estate secrets. With the launch of The Vanguard, that secret is starting to spread. The 25-storey landmark by Devron Developments will be at the corner of Yonge and Grandview and offers everything from spacious four-bedroom suites to thoughtfully designed amenities. Partnering with award-winning interior design firm, II BY IV DESIGN and Kirkor Architects and Planners, families and the Grandview community played an elemental role in the design of each space, thoughtfully weaving together luxury and community features to support a healthy lifestyle for families. “It feels like home,” says Dan Menchions, partner and Principal at II BY IV DESIGN. “From the moment you walk in, there is a feeling of warmth that flows throughout the building–every space cultivates a sense of community and has a welcoming, approachable air.”

ROOM TO PLAY

“Parents naturally want room for their kids to play and grow, with this in mind, every amenity is designed to give families the space, which ultimately acts as an extension of their home,” says Menchions. “It was the inspiration behind the Children’s Play Room, which is truly a one-of-akind amenity no other condo has at the moment.” The main focal point of the bright, cheerful room is a gorgeous sculptural tree that reaches all the way up to the ceiling. Kid-sized furniture make up communal craft areas to draw, paint and more. Inspired by the parklands in the area, grass-green carpeting makes the room look like a landscaped field as sunlight pours in from the floor-to-ceiling windows. “It’s an imaginative, whimsical space,” says Menchions. “Although just one of the many shared spaces that allow children to be active and playful with their friends and neighbours.”
GET OUTSIDE
“Beyond the indoor play area, we knew that families value outdoor space as well,” says Cliff Korman, founding partner of Kirkor Architects and Planners. “One of the unique features of The Vanguard is its generous outdoor terrace. It’s wonderfully sheltered from the wind by the trees and there’s plenty of lawn space for the kids to play on.” Every feature on the 7,000-squarefoot terrace designed by Strybos Barron King encourages socializing and meeting among neighbours while also creating more intimate spaces. The gourmet culinary centre features top-of-the-line barbecues and prep areas that connect to the open-air dining room. The planters, hedges and pergolas naturally define each area while providing shade and privacy. To create more flow between common areas and the outdoors, doors from indoor amenity spaces also open onto the terrace. Community gardens will consist of raised planters and will allow residents to grow their own fresh herbs and vegetables in the warmer months. No matter the age, the garden gives families plenty of opportunities to get their hands dirty. “The outdoor terrace is wonderfully interactive,” says Menchions. “There are areas to play, areas to cook, and space to grow, which is what families are looking for.”

CHILDREN’S PLAY ROOM
“Like the public areas, the suites have a warmth and approachability to them, which makes every room enjoyable to be in,” says Menchions. “It’s very subtle, and through the use of natural materials and finishes, we created spaces that are very comfortable and inviting.” The Vanguard boasts larger suites than what is typically found in downtown condos with layouts that include up to four bedrooms and floor plans of up to 3,500-square-feet. The suites were designed with families who crave the room to grow. And with all of the sustainable
features integrated into the building, it embodies a future-forward philosophy of protecting the environment for the next generation. From the sophisticated graywater system that helps to irrigate the landscaping to the Tesla Destination Wall Chargers. The Vanguard will be the 23rd building in Markham to attain the prestigious gold LEED certification. “The best part is that The Vanguard is simply an extension to the Grandview neighbourhood,” says Pouyan. “It’s a place built for families in a familyoriented community, but we’re elevating that lifestyle through thoughtful design.”

f you are looking for something different than the classic white, stark marble bathroom, why not consider using warmer overall neutral tones for your next bathroom renovation? Natural and neutral materials bring about an earthy feel to any bath space and will evoke a calm, spa-feel atmosphere. These warm and modern bathrooms we recently designed show that simple, clean lines with a neutral palette can be both timeless and stylish.
When it comes to choosing the finishes for your bathroom design, consider layering materials for a luxe look. Wood, natural stones, glass, metals, porcelain, and quartz are some key finishes. It is all about combining these textural materials effectively in a neutral-style bathroom design to create a space with a serene and interesting layered look.
TONES & TEXTURES
The trick to achieving an overall neutral palette, which is both interesting and calming for your bathroom space, to work with a wide range of tones and textures throughout. Layering textiles is key to creating a warm, well-designed space. Neutral colours are also great options for allowing the architectural elements of your design to take centre stage. A neutral colour scheme allows the modern tub, shiny tiles, and wood vanities of today to come to the forefront and tell the story of the room design.
DON’T FORGET THE CONTRAST
Adding contrast, such as a lighter or darker countertop on your vanity, or the addition of textural materials, like weathered and grainy woods, and textural tiles and stone with veining and shine, will add great interest and warmth to any bathroom design. Start with the floor tile when pulling together a design scheme. The tone of the floor will establish the overall colour scheme of the room and act as the perfect backdrop for an overall neutral bathroom space. Neutrals today are far from boring. For inspiration, take a look at any Scandinavian design as they have perfected this simple, minimalist and functional design since the 1950s.
WARMING TRENDS
Go beyond the white bathroom and add further warmth by working with various neutrals in off-whites, greys and sandy browns. We refer to this warm-grey tone today as “greige,” which complements most neutral palettes and can be layered for a luxurious effect from the tile, paint, cabinetry and accents. The cabinetry in your washroom is an important defining element, which sets the overall feel of the room. Go with sleek flat-panelled cabinets for a modern look, or raised panel doors with decorative kick plates for a more classic and traditional look. To add warmth, texture and interest when working with a tone-on-tone neutral palette, introduce woods with rich grains such as walnut or zebra woods to the cabinetry area. renoanddecor.com October/November 2016 :: 49

DESIGN LESSON
The design statement of this project was all about warmth and minimalism. For example, principles of modernism were used to stack geometric shapes for the vanity. Counters are smooth and shiny. Wall-mounted faucets are in keeping with the streamlined design and also make counters easier to clean.
The floors were complemented with horizontal grained, similar-toned marble for the shower walls, walnut cabinetry, chrome fixtures and a soft wall colour.

successful bathroom renovation happens when the design features address the problem areas and fulfill the homeowners’ wish list. The end result is a bathroom with both style and substance, where the daily use of the space is more efficient and in tune with their esthetic.

MUST-HAVE FEATURES
For the design of this latest bathroom project, the homeowners wanted to go a different direction from the other classic-style bathrooms I designed in their home. A contemporary look was desired with more of a masculine feel for the one boy in the family. This family bathroom serves mainly the three children, two of which are girls, and house guests. Most importantly, this family bathroom had to have the capacity to adapt and accommodate the children as they grow into young adults. All finishes had to be durable and pleasing while also being cost-effective and classic in the overall design plan. Instantly, I was drawn towards a walnut finish for the cabinetry as walnut is the quintessential definition of classic modern design. Its striking colour coupled with crispwhite, oversized, modern subway tiles and black hexagon floor mosaics, shifts the look from über-modern to eclectic, modern with a subtle nod to retro. When it comes to bathrooms, making a statement takes the average bathroom from boring to outstanding. Using a bold colour, or creating some drama with a unique material will give the space its own distinct style.
THE SPACE TO STORE
A well-executed bathroom design also requires proper space planning. Storage is key in most bathrooms, and while we lifted the vanity off the ground to show off the gorgeous mosaic floor, we also added a tall linen tower on the end to maximize the storage and check off another coveted item on the homeowners’ wish list. The biggest luxury in a bathroom is being able to have space for everything you need. Offsetting the storage tower to the end as opposed to opting for the usual two
symmetrical towers on either end also helps define the contemporary look of this bathroom.
MODERN DESIGN TIPS
For a custom look, oversized subway tiles were used to not only line the bathtub surround, but also as a backsplash to the vanity. Stacking the tiles in a grid pattern as opposed to a staggered pattern is key to a modern look and adds a practical element to everyday use of water splashing. Two under-mount rectangular basins are inset around a crisp-white Caesarstone countertop, with a very straight and thin profile edge. This durable surface will stand the test of time and works perfectly in a space that needs to be self-sufficient. Finding a balance between finishes that are beautiful and practical can sometimes be challenging, neverthe-

less, more and more clever products are popping up on the market to make these dilemmas less daunting and more inspiring to work with.
THE RETRO TOUCH
And finally, choosing the right lighting is critical to an overall bathroom design. We used overhead lighting with ample pot lights over the tub, toilet and core area. We also opted for a fun pair of nauticalinspired wall sconces in a distressed bronze finish. These fixtures add a utilitarian touch to the minimalist, and clean lines that predominate the look of this family bathroom. The mixing of metals is also a fun design element so don’t be afraid to mix and match or go for all bronze finishes. Designing a bathroom requires gathering of information, listening, thinking practical and outside of the box all at the same time. Creating the right balance of beauty and function is key to successful bathroom design. Black, white and a touch of walnut will stand the test of time and will feel gender-neutral and timeless, modern and dramatic in any setting. PRE-SET PREFERENCES
The same company also makes an impressive spa-like shower unit called the DTV+. Instead of levers and knobs to control the various jets and faucets, the DTV+ comes with a waterproof touchpad for adjusting the water flow and temperature. You can even save up to six different pre-sets so each family member can have a customized shower “experience.” If you still have money left to burn, there are bathroom mirrors with built-in screens that enable you to watch TV or surf the Internet while you brush your teeth.
COMMERCIAL COMFORTS
Oftentimes, products that are designed for commercial projects migrate into the residential market. Many homeowners have already seen the hygienic benefits of installing hands-free faucets in their kitchens and bathrooms. Another item that first appeared in public washrooms but is increasingly being used in homes is a wall-mounted toilet. By eliminating the need for a tank, manufacturers have enabled homeowners to save some space in small bathrooms, or add a sleek design feature in full-size ensuites. One commercial product that’s making a somewhat surprising entrance into homes is urinals. Seriously. They use a lot less water than a toilet for every flush, and are a great option for taking your “man cave” to the next level, or for families with lots of boys in the house. Of course if your man cave bathroom includes a shower, you’re going to want the ultimate in bathroom extravagances, a Seura waterproof television so you can watch the game while you wash up!

t may seem hard to believe, but there are a number of Canadians from my generation who grew up in rural parts of the country without indoor plumbing. It’s amazing to think that in my lifetime we’ve gone from people using outhouses, to today’s high-tech toilets. The most technologically advanced toilet I’ve ever seen is the Numi toilet made by Kohler. From the motion-activated lid and heated seat, to the Bluetooth technology that enables you to stream your favourite music while seated on the throne, they’ve jammed in more technology than our grandparents could have even imagined. Of course, all these bells and whistles come at a cost: the Numi retails for a little more than $9,000!

HOT IDEAS for ADDITIONAL HEATING Weighing the pros and cons of wood vs. gas vs. electric fireplaces BY JIM CARUK
Once upon a time, fireplaces were often the primary source of heat in a home. Today, most fireplaces are used more for ambiance than for sustaining life. When it comes to choosing a decorative fireplace, there are three main types: wood-burning, gas, and electric, and there are pros and cons to each.
For millennia, humans have gathered around wood-burning fires. Frankly, nothing beats the crackle, pop, and hissing of a wood fire for ambiance, and who doesn’t find themselves mesmerized by the flickering flames? But wood-burning fireplaces do require some legwork. For one, firewood needs to be seasoned—i.e. allowed to dry after it’s cut—for at least six months before you burn it. Otherwise, there will be too much moisture in the wood and you’ll end up with a smoky fire. You can buy seasoned wood from suppliers, but you’ll need to store it in a dry, sheltered area to ensure it doesn’t get wet before you use it. Then you have to dispose of the ash when your fire has burnt out, which can be a messy chore. A bigger concern, though, is the risk of fire spreading beyond the fireplace. According to fire marshals’ data, chimney fires account for about five per cent of the home fires in Canada. That’s why it’s recommended that you have your chimney inspected annually, and cleaned as necessary.
On the upside, a fireplace or woodstove in the home ensures you have a source of heat even when the power is out.
IT’S A GAS
Today, gas inserts are a far-more common choice than wood-burning fireplaces. The reason is simple: with the push of a button you have instant heat, without having to store firewood or clean up the ashes afterwards. Most modern units can also be vented directly out an exterior wall instead of up a chimney, meaning they can be placed almost anywhere you’d like on the inside. (There are zoning restrictions that require the exterior vent to be a minimum distance from the property line, and that can be an issue on narrow city lots.) Design-wise, you can choose from models that try to mimic the look of a natural fire—complete with “glowing” logs—or opt for a modern design, with polished glass beads or other items to reflect the light. Obviously, you’ll need to have natural gas service at your home to install a gas fireplace, but if you already have
multiple fixtures drawing from the supply (furnace, water heater, stove, etc.), you may need to upgrade your meter. If you do vent a gas-fireplace up an existing chimney, you may also need to install a liner.
ELECTRIC LIGHT ORCHESTRA
Electric fireplaces have come a long way from the tacky faux-log units people bought in the 1970s. They’re also a versatile option with plug-andplay models that you can move from room to room, or built-ins that can be hardwired and installed on any wall in any room of the house. As with gas fireplaces, you can choose units that do a decent job of mimicking a real fire, including scorchmarked logs, or pick an ultra-modern design with coloured light shows. Some of the most realistic-looking ones I’ve seen are made by Dimplex. Their Opti-Myst units use water vapour to add a smoke-like effect to the faux-flickering flames. Since they can be operated without the heat, they’re great for families with small children.

the RIGHT WAY to RENO Partner with a pro to renovate with peace of mind
ith housing prices in the GTA continuing to hit record highs, more and more homeowners are opting to renovate their existing homes instead of looking for something new. Renovating is exciting, and it is a big undertaking that requires careful consideration and planning. The first step to a successful renovation is to do your homework and carefully outline your project and determine what your goals are for the renovation. Your long-term plans will play an important role in what renovations you
The next step is to hire a professional renovator as they have the knowledge and experience that can help guide you through the budget and renovation process. Talk to several renovators and choose one that you are comfortable working with. Professional renovators have legitimate business licenses, are insured and offer warranties on their work. They regularly attend educational seminars and have a strong knowledge of municipal by-laws and the Ontario Building Code—two very detailed sets of standards that rule projects large and small.
TALK TO SEVERAL RENOVATORS AND CHOOSE ONE THAT YOU ARE COMFORTABLE WORKING WITH. decide to take on. Is this your forever house? Or might you be planning to move in a few years? What improvements are important to you and will allow you to enjoy your home more? Are you looking to add space or replace or upgrade your kitchen? Perhaps you’re considering more practical renovations such as expanding a bathroom or increasing the energy efficiency of your home. Once you determine your goals and priorities, you need to establish your budget. The scope of your renovations will be influenced by how much money you have available. Knowing your budget before moving forward will help you make the right decisions about your project.
When you work with a professional renovator, you can renovate with confidence knowing that you’re working with someone who understands the rules and regulations that go along with home construction. Many renovation projects require municipal building permits. A professional renovator will assist you with the permit process. They will also coordinate architectural and engineering services if required. Before you start construction, your renovator should provide you with a written contract outlining all the details of the project. The contract needs to clearly describe the scope of work, project timelines, payment schedules, warranties and how to handle any
changes. If you don’t sign a contract, chances are that you’re not working with a professional and will have no legal recourse should you receive substandard work. Your renovator is your partner in realizing your vision for your project so keep the lines of communication open and check in on progress regularly to ensure everything is going as discussed. Renomark.ca is a great resource to help you find the right renovator, trade contractor or custom builders. BILD created the RenoMark program in 2001 so that consumers could easily identify professional renovators who are committed to high standards. The program was well received and soon expanded to other markets. Today, RenoMark is used to distinguish professional renovators in nine provinces and more than 40 municipalities across Canada. RenoMark renovators abide by a renovation-specific code of conduct, which includes things like providing a written contract; offering a minimum $2 million in liability insurance; providing two years warranty on all work; and having all applicable licenses and certificates.

y fall to-do list below may provide the perfect excuse to get outside and enjoy the fresh, late autumn air. It is my goal to help save your investment in a great-looking garden next year.
1 PLANT TULIPS. If you forgot
2
WILT-PRUF. This ready-touse liquid is magic on boxwood, yews, cedars exposed to wind and road-salt-spray, rhododendrons, and your fresh-cut Christmas tree. Wilt-Pruf is an ‘anti-desiccant’ that provides an invisible layer of protection to all broad-leaved evergreens come winter. The humidity in our winter air drops to less than 10 per cent some days, causing the moisture in the foliage of tender evergreens to evaporate.
5
1
The result is browning in the extreme. Your Christmas tree will benefit from an application of Wilt-pruf, reducing needle drop and fire hazard.
3 HILL UP YOUR ROSES. Mound
triple mix to a height of 50 cm around the base of each hybrid tea, floribunda, grandiflora and miniature rose bush. A plastic rose collar will help you do an even better job. Bags of triple mix are available at your garden retailer.
4 RAKE THE LAST OF THE
FALLEN LEAVES off your lawn
and into your garden. Worms will pull the leaves down into the soil come spring. Do not rake them into bags and take them to the curb. Putting them on your garden is less work, saves you money and it is good for your garden. Trust me.
5 CLEAN YOUR BIRD FEEDERS.
Then fill them. We are never as inclined to clean our bird feeders in the winter. It is a nuisance. So do it now, using a stiff brush and soapy water. Then fill them with quality bird seed and note that the cheap stuff mostly ends up kicked out of the feeder onto the ground. Songbirds are not stupid.
6 FEED YOUR LAWN. The most
important application of the year occurs in the fall, but only when you apply it. If you haven’t done it, it is not too late. Come spring your lawn will thank you by greening up quickly with much greater resistance to snow mould and brown-out. For long-lasting results, use a quality product with slow-release nitrogen.
7
TURN YOUR COMPOST pile, or the contents of your compost bin, one more time before hard frost. This introduces oxygen and speeds decomposition. You want that.

to plant them earlier, or you just didn’t get around to it, now is the perfect time to plant tulips for a great spring show of colour. Truth is, most spring-flowering bulbs need more time in the soil before the winter sets its frosty claws into it. Not so tulips. Plant as long as you can move the soil with a trowel or shovel. If your garden soil is frozen, the soil near the foundation of your home likely is not. Look for the new Canada 150 tulip: red and white, in a ‘flame-like’ pattern. There will be over 300,000 planted this fall in Ottawa for the spring Tulip Festival, why not join in the celebration? It is available at Home Hardware.

8 DIG AND DIVIDE PERENNIALS. Hosta plants that
have been established for five years or more lend themselves to being divided up and replanted around the yard. This is true of monarda, day lilies, Shasta daisies and any plant with a fleshy root.
9 PRUNE EVERGREENS and plan on using some of the limbs for Christmas decoration. This is true also for fruiting plants like trumpet vine, hardy holly, many roses that produce colourful hips, small-fruiting crab apples, etc. Look for anything that is attractive in your yard and go nuts.
10 WRAP BURLAP AROUND CEDARS AND
EVERGREENS that are exposed to wind. Two layers of inexpensive burlap around all evergreens will help to prevent snow damage (from the weight of snow), salt spray (from the melted snow on a nearby road, especially on the east side of the road) and sun scald in late winter (when the sun reflects off a clean, white layer of snow onto evergreen foliage).

anadians carry an international reputation as a relatively private group of people. Most homes have their blinds drawn to the street 90 per cent of the time, our dominant architectural styling is more traditional in nature, and we rarely veer outside the colour swatches of the beige and, more recently, the grey palette section. Oak floors, white kitchens, and board fences are what we show to the outside world, and to our friends and family that we invite inside our homes.
There is a particular room of the home however, typically the smallest room in the home, where we shed our inhibitions and are willing to experiment, express our design flair and creativity. Designers are often given a bit of free reign in this space to try something unique and, as a result, we tend to see more daring design influences shine through within them. We have a love/hate relationship with these spaces—we love that they are accessible and on the main floor when the time comes to use them, but we try desperately to hide them from view of any food-prep or dining areas, as well as spaces where people gather such as family and living rooms. SMALL ROOM, BIG PERSONALITY

In a playful act, many of our clients have adopted a more relaxed and experimental attitude deciding to make them fun and exciting spaces, bucking the trend of bland and making light of these socially awkward, yet crucial segments of our homes. It may relate to the fact the spaces are so small in nature that updating them to current design trends has less of a budget impact and, therefore, less risky than taking the same type of design risk in a larger and more complex space, such as the kitchen, where renovations can prove costly and people tend to experiment less often.

MAKING IMPOSSIBLE POSSIBLE:
HARDWOOD FLOORING IN THE BATHROOM hen deciding on which type of flooring to use in any given space the decision will depend not only on the overall look you want to achieve in the space but also on the functionality of a space. The purpose of the room, the traffic level and the style will determine what application is best for your space. When your space is a bathroom the limiting factors include the size of the space, the amount of use it is going to have as well as the functionality of the space. Depending on the type of bathroom that you have, your flooring options for the space may be more varied than you think. Most people will install the safe choice in a bathroom: Tile. While tiles are waterproof and usually easy to clean, they do tend to be colder underfoot and they can chip if something is dropped on them or crack if the subfloor or foundation moves too much. They also have a way of visually cutting off the space from the hallway or room that they are adjacent to. Most people would not dream of continuing hardwood floors from the hallway into the bathroom, but we are here to tell you that what seems impossible is actually quite possible. When it comes to installing hardwood
flooring in your bathroom, the first thing to consider is whether this is a full bathroom or a powder room. The main distinction is that a full bathroom will have a bathtub or stand-in shower and it will have a much higher moisture variance throughout the course of a day. As you use your shower or tub, you increase the amount of moisture in the air in the bathroom, and although this is not always good for hardwood flooring, it doesn’t mean you can’t use hardwood in these spaces. There are pressure treated woods that were meant for decking and outside use, or for use in Saunas that will tolerate these moisture levels very well. So in a full bathroom you can always use pressure treated flooring to solve that issue. Just keep in mind that you want these floors to have a matte finish to them and you want them to be unstained. So pre-finished flooring may not be your best bet for a full bathroom. This however is not the case for a powder room or a guest bathroom. In these bathrooms you do not have a bathtub. All that is in these rooms is a vanity or a stand alone sink and a toilet. Therefore the moisture issues that we would have to consider for a full bathroom are not present. These rooms therefore are just like any other room and can have
pre-finished hardwood flooring installed in them with no issues what so ever. Now you may ask why would I go for a wood floor rather than tile in my powder room? Well there are many benefits to installing hardwood in your bathroom. For one thing wood is naturally warmer underfoot and a better thermal insulator than tiles are. Also by carrying the same flooring from the hallway into the powder room you actually make the room look bigger and part of a larger whole as opposed to making it its own small space. Also Hardwood flooring is more resilient when it comes to the movement of the foundation or taking impacts. It is much easier to fix a dent on a hardwood floor than it would be to replace a cracked or dented tile. Whether you had considered hardwood as a possibility in your bathrooms or not, the possibility is there and the choices are endless. For more information you can always visit our website at www. msquareddesign.ca or come and visit our showroom in Concord or at the Improve mall at 7250 Keele Street. We look forward to providing you with more information and options when you are ready to take the plunge!

See a Vintage Airstream Step inside an awe-inspiring 1976 vintage Airstream. A stylish small space of 248 square feet (31’x8’) renovated by Lynne Knowlton, blogger and designer, designthelifeyouwanttolive.com. Lynne brings the Airstream to life with her passion for design and her love for bright whites. It’s amazing how a little white paint, glistening gold hardware and fantastic fabrics can bring something vintage to life again.
Experience Virtual Reality Step into the future and experience a dream home kitchen in virtual reality! When you put on the virtual reality (VR) goggles you’ll be instantly transported to a dream kitchen where you can walk around and explore. In virtual reality you can even change the kitchen finishes to suit your style, and experience what it is like to walk around as a giant, adult, child or pet!

BOHO MEETS CHIC BY SILVANA LONGO
The word bohemian conjures up images of free spirits who consider their dwelling a place to showcase meaningful items collected during their travels around the world. In the 21st century, the BOHO gets tempered somewhat when you add the CHIC; this is an eclectic look, just a little more edited and refined from its original more earthy, raw debut in the ‘70s. The building blocks are the mixing of patterns, bright, rich colours and lots of texture. Choose items with a vintage vibe but do mix in the polished with the rustic as this is a curated, layered look that invites the world and its depth into your decor in an effortless, casual but chic way.
