Aufderheide Scenic Drive

Oregonians, put this on your To-Do List this summer. Aufderheide Scenic Drive is considered one of Oregon’s most beautiful stretches and it is in our own backyard. Aufderheide Drive was named after Robert Aufderheide, the Willamette National Forest Supervisor from 1954 until his death in 1959. During his career, Aufderheide was instrumental in helping the Forest Service complete the transition from custodial management to professional intensive forest management under multiple-use principles. “Bob was an influential leader of forest managers during this important time in National Forest history,” said Jeff Sirmon, Pacific Northwest Regional Forester.

The road will take you through Box Canyon where a log cabin replica of the old guard station stands near the summit of the drive. Here you’ll also find the Box Canyon Horse Camp. There are also several trails in this area that access both roadless and wilderness areas. You may want to explore Chucksney Mountain trail, Grasshopper trail and Crossing Way trail. Wilderness area entry permits may be required. Camp sites and cabin rentals are available. Check with the Middle Fork Ranger Station. From the summit the road will wind you down the South Fork of the Mckenzie River to Cougar reservoir and Terwilliger Hot Springs (also known as Cougar Hot Springs). The hot springs are a fantastic place to soak at the end of this journey. There is a day use fee of $6 per person in place. If you care for a different kind of soaking experience continue down to Hwy 126 and head east about 20 minutes to Belknap Hot springs with two large soaking pools. Whether by car or bike along the way you will find multiple ideal spots for a picnic or snack. For road bikers the starting elevation is about 1,200 feet and climbs to 3,815 feet (elevation gain of 2,880 feet).

oREGON Covered Bridges

Oregon’s got you covered if you are looking for covered bridges. Pioneers began building covered bridges in Oregon during the mid1850’s. In the early 20th century, the state provided standard bridge designs to each county, most of these structures incorporated the Howe truss. The abundance of Douglas Fir and the shortage of steel during the world wars continued construction of covered spans well into the 1950’s.

A wooden bridge was covered to keep the huge truss timbers dry. A covered bridge could last 80 years or more, while an uncovered span would deteriorate in about nine years. In 1987, legislation was established to help fund preservation of these links to our past. Many of the bridges are within an hour and a half drive. You can make a day of it because as you will see many towns have more than one to explore. Oregon once had more than 600 covered bridges and now only 50 remain.

Beautiful Lighthouses

Lighthouses can be said to date back to antiquity with fires lit on top of hilltops to mark the entry to a port. Often times the fire was built on a platform to raise the visibility and this became the foundation for modern day lighthouses that now are now used as a warning signal for reefs or promontories such as a peninsula. In the Greek-Roman period sturdy structures began to be built to withstand gale winds. During these times local fuels were supplemented by coals and oil to keep the fire buring during the night and the lighthouse would be constructed with a chimney through the top room. With only a few remaining intact towers of this time period little is known about the inner workings of them. During the middle ages as navigation improved lighthouses expanded into Europe and in 1780 an Argand lamp (using oil and a wick) and a parabolic rotating mirror was installed in the Cordouan tower in France, establishing modern day lighthouse concepts.

The first lighthouse in America was the Boston Light, built in 1716 at Boston Harbor. The fuel source for these lighthouses was still wood or coal. The Fresnel lens which is now used in most lighthouses today was established in the 1820’s and help improve visibility. This allowed light from a small source to be gathered and refracted into a concentrated beam. In 1865 gas illumination was invented and by 1870 the revolving lens was added to create the world’s first group flashing lighthouse. Today lighthouse are automated and the only “keeper” in the US (by Order of the US Congress) is in the Boston Lighthouse.
