Long Life Noodles

Eating unbroken noodles over the New Year is said to give you long life!

Any long noodle will do. Enjoy!

INGREDIENTS 2 3 oz. packages ramen noodles 1 pound sugar snap peas 3 tablespoons vegetable oil 1 pound boneless sirloin steak, thinly sliced crosswise 1/4 cup chopped fresh ginger 3 garlic cloves, smashed 6 scallions, sliced 1 cup low-sodium beef broth 1/4 cup reduced-sodium soy sauce 2 tablespoons cornstarch 1 tablespoon toasted sesame oil

PREPARATION Cook ramen noodles as package label directs. Discard flavoring packets. Drain noodles. Boil snap peas for 2 minutes. Drain and rinse with cold water.

Warm one tablespoon of vegetable oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add steak, stir-fry for 2 minutes.

Transfer to a plate. Add remaining two tablespoon of vegetable oil to skillet. Stir fry ginger, garlic and scallions for 1 minute.

Whisk together broth, soy sauce and cornstarch. Add to skillet; stir-fry for 1 minute. Add peas and steak; stir until hot. Stir in sesame oil. Toss in noodles. Serve hot.

Hoppin’ John Recipe By: Daisy - Allrecipes “I eat this dish every New Year’s day, it’s supposed to bring you luck, and so far my life’s been pretty good. It’s also good anytime you need a hearty homey meal!”

INGREDIENTS: 1 ½ cups dry BLACK-EYED PEAS 1 pound ham hocks 1 onion, chopped ½ teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes salt and pepper to taste 4 cups water (Chicken broth) 1 ½ cups long-grain WHITE RICE 1 cup shredded smoked Cheddar cheese DIRECTIONS: In a large pan place the peas, ham hock, onion, red pepper, salt and pepper. Cover with water and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for 1 ½ hours.

Remove ham hock and cut meat into pieces. Return meat to pot. Stir in the rice, cover and cook until rice is tender, about 20 to 25 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Sprinkle shredded cheese over top, if desired.

Owner, Mike Rainville, first came to woodworking as a hobby in the 1970s while he was in school. Working out of his parents’ basement with scraps from his grandfather’s carpentry projects, he duplicated household items, things like spool holders and cribbage boards. He began selling his creations to friends and neighbors, and and by 1979 he was operating a wholesale business. Local craft fairs also provided income and experience.
