Honoring Steward s h i p
Environmental stewardship is nothing new. A simple practice at the core of Indigenous life; take only what’s needed, take great care of how it’s taken, and leave enough for future generations. We are all guardians of our planet.
Jake's Gouda Row by Row Farm was founded in 2013 by Dakota and Mira Miller. Dedicated to serving the health of their soil, customers, and nature, the Millers choose not to use synthetic Hurley, NY pesticides and fertilizers or genetically modified or fungicide-treated seed on their farm. Dakota and Mira do not take the opportunity of stewarding their sliver of the historic "Hurley Flats" lightly. With great care for the environment and its biological diversity, they manage 140 acres of prime vegetable cropland, regenerating what was once a multi-generation vegetable farm. Their farmland has been under organic practices since 2014 and certified by NOFA-NY since 2017. It is with a great sense of pride that they continue to nurture the land back to a healthy and productive state.
Jake lives by the philosophy that well-crafted food is inherently good. Something about it just makes you feel... well, good. Jake believed he could bring this goodness to Gouda cheese. You see, true Gouda needs to breathe. And most of what Jake could find locally was sealed so tight it was as if the goodness has been squeezed right out. So, with the help of his wife Sylvia, they embarked on a new adventure. With milk sourced from their own dairy farm in Deansboro, NY, Jake's Gouda is turned daily on pine planks to ensure uniform age and perfection for at least sixty days. It's covered with a cream coating instead of a wax seal. It's also a raw milk cheese - no high temp pasteurization here. Jake and Sylvia's cows are grass-fed and roam freely on 200-acres.
