Ellen Dolan Hosts

Southside Farm Club and Introduces New Member

On Wednesday, January 18th, 2023, members of Southside Farm Club began our new year at the home of our hostess of Ellen Dolan. We opened with a remembrance of Donna Christy. Donna was the friend and classmate of many of our members. Mrs. Dolan reminded us of Donna’s love, positivity, and humor in life. Fittingly the theme of our lunch was laughter. Tin cutouts of the word “laugh”, candles, and beautiful china dressed the tables and home.

After lunch, our meeting opened with a greeting from President Janice Belvel. The December 14, 2022 meeting minutes were read. Recapping the December celebration at the home of hostess Mrs. Marie Dolan we reminisced past and current holiday menus and dining traditions. A collection of $242.00 was collected and donated to Backpack Buddies.

January attendance was taken and introduced newest member Peggy Graves. The roll call question asked us to respond with “New Year Resolutions.” Many of us admitted that we don’t hold to resolutions, our goals were new objectives. New flower beds and outside renovations, decluttering, and removal of unused items topped the list for the majority. Others discussed realigning personal and work agendas and meeting deadlines.

Mrs. Dolan began the meeting program by recalling the purchase of a twenty-five dollar quilt that was larger than the scope of the room it was intended for. With intensive research, Mrs. Dolan learned she had a replica of an ap- pliquéd biblical textile by Harriet Powers, of Athens Georgia circa 1886. Harriet Powers of African-American descent was known for her appliquéd quilts and wearable textiles such as aprons depicting representations of Fon or Kongo culture and Masonic secret societies. Mrs. Dolan’s quilt is now a permanent display piece in the basement of the relocated African Methodist Episcopal Church in Chillicothe Missouri under the ownership of the Grand River Historical Society Museum. The church with a story of its own was the first AfricanAmerican church built north of the Missouri River after the Civil War. The original quilt by Ms. Powers is displayed within the walls of The Smithsonian Institute.

Also discussed was the “stripping” quilt style of the African-American Pettway Family of Gee’s Bend Alabama. Sharecropper slaves were stranded at this secluded bend in the river because they could not afford the cost of a ferry ride across The Alabama River. Recognition came years later when representations of their work were seen hanging on a clothesline. Their story can be read online at veranda.com using the keyword search “Gee’s Bend Alabama.”

Our meeting concluded with an $89.00 donation collected for the local food pantry and club prizes distributed to recipients Peggy Graves, Hostess Gift, and Marie Dolan, Mystery Gift.

The next meeting will be on February 15, 2023, with Jackie Altenderfer as our hostess, and the location to be determined.

On December 28, Marilyn Tracy took her granddaughter, Jill of St. Joseph and Jill’s friend Craig; her great granddaughter, Devon of Aurora, CO, and her son, Steve Tracy, and his wife Mary of Trenton to the Galt Café for Christmas dinner.

Barb Harbo of Eagan, MN, came to spend January 6 – 10 with her mother, Bonna Dittberner.

Dan and Carol Wilford hosted a family Christmas on Saturday, January 21, 2023. Lisandro and Mary Gonzalez and sons, Sammy, Joshua, and Andrew of Kansas City, KS, arrived Friday evening. Other family members came on Saturday - Steve and Naomi Campbell and Halley and Dustin of Marshall in the morning and John and Ingrid Wilford of Lee’s Summit around noon. A variety of foods were served instead of the traditional turkey, ham and mashed potatoes meal. Next, came the opening of presents as everyone gathered around the kitchen table. Because of Halley Campbell’s early completion of high school, she was given extra gifts to prepare her for leaving home, getting a job and an apartment. After that, those wanting to watch the KC Chiefs’ game gathered around the computer screen making boisterous cheering and commenting of play by play calls; all the while snacking and visiting with each other. The surprise snowfall caused the children and some adults to go outside to frolic in the lovely large flakes that peppered down on sidewalks, cars, as well as hats and noses. Each family left Saturday evening as the snow continue to fall. One incident caused a change in plans. As John and Ingrid headed west out of Trenton, his truck fishtailed and went down into a ditch on the south side of the road just past Thompson River. They were not hurt. Police and tow truck were called. Lisandro and Mary Gonzalez had chosen Hwy 65 instead of going through Trenton, but came back after hearing of John’s predicament. Lisandro took John and Ingrid all the way home to Lee’s Summit.
