Field | Stream | Courtyard House The city of Tainan is a place for reading and strolling. As a historical city of three hundred years, the urban fabric indicates traces of memories from the past and insights from cultural fusion. Through stories embedded in every street and corner, Tainan provides a unique urban experience for its people. The extensive Chianan Plain, farmland, stream, and traditional courtyard houses merge into a beautiful picture that prints in the mind of everyone. By integrating knowledge, books, and local characteristics into the design concept, the building not only fulfills urban functions, but also reinforces the city image.

Design Process Thorough analysis of the old and new site context was done to divide the landscape into water plaza, driveway, and greenery. A traditional courtyard house was overlaid onto the building massing. Through subtraction method, overlaid areas were then removed to create several semioutdoor spaces. Through which, the surrounding natural environment can be brought into various spaces among the building. A sunken plaza is designed to define outdoor reading platforms, and divide outdoor space into a control area and an open area.

Urban Context

The building is located on the south to maximize green plaza area on the north. A green belt is established by extending open spaces within the site to the parks on the north and the west. Vegetation follows the green belt and enters different levels in the library. Through several semioutdoor pathways penetrating through the building, greenery is brought into various spaces to enhance spatial comfort and convenience. An activity plaza is placed on the south to connect activities with the neighboring creative park. The grand semi-outdoor plaza under the elevated volume forms an ideal shelter for recreational activities during summer.

Summer shading

Located south of the Northern Tropic, the intense summer sun casts shadows towards the south-east direction. Thus, open spaces are located on the south-east side of the site

During winter, the sun casts shadow on the north-east direction. Thus, the sunlight pours onto the open space to provide warmth and comfort.

G r a n d i ou s V o i d s The void on the 3rd floor is resulted from spatial inversion of a traditional courtyard house. Thus, semioutdoor pathways are created to bring greenery from the surrounding environment into the building. The library is transformed into a park, where reading becomes something fun and natural. This interior park on the 3rd floor also contains spaces for the elderly to provide leisure activities such as Chinese chess, everyday chatting, and reading newspapers. Together with kids area and periodic collection, the 3rd floor arouses relaxation where visitors are welcome to exchange ideas without concerning about the noise.

H i s t o r y of W a n j i n g The Beijing city district of Wanjing has traditionally been a gateway for people entering the city. Its name literally translates as “Looking Towards Beijing.” we seek to renew that title with the design of Beijing Automotive Group’s new Research and Development Center. Taking inspiration from the character 北 (bei), which signifies openness, as well as Beijing itself, this mixed use building is meant to become a symbolic landmark both for Wanjing and for the company it houses.

SITE

The Research and Development Center’s sinuous form will sit on two separate plots of land bisected by a public roadway. The northernmost lot will host a five story structure that hold exhibition space, an auditorium, and shopping, while the southern lot will be the site for two 18-story office towers. These buildings will connect by bridging the roadway, forming a literal gateway to the city of Beijing.

Green

Design for the R&D Center of Beijing Automotive Group is based on two principles: the site as a gateway for Beijing and the essence of the Chinese character, 北 (bei). Literally translates into “Looking Towards Beijing”, Wangjing was the first stop into Beijing for soldiers returning home from battles during the Song and Liao dynasties. The design develops the character 北 (bei) and organizes research offices at two 18-storey towers and retail, an auditorium and an exhibition hall at a five-storey building. As one moves from one floor to another, the combination of natural light, curving forms and automotive research on display blur the typical division of inside and outside. Nature, people and automobile coexist harmoniously, introducing a contemporary landmark for the city of Beijing and portraying a new corporate image for the client, Beijing Automotive Group.

The building’s curving form stems from the fluidity rooted in Chinese calligraphy. Like a graceful glide through clouds and water .

Energy Strategies To facilitate stack effect ventilation and bring natural light into the interior, the structure makes use of a light well. Geothermal, radiant cooling and green roofs are also used to regulate temperature. The building’s form naturally diverts northern winter wind, and the roof ventilation ports can be closed to conserve heat during colder months. To reduce energy consumption both in terms of heating and cooling, an internal light well establishes a stack effect to facilitate air circulation, addressing both the extreme heat in the summer and the frigid temperatures in the winter.

8 Ideas for New Taipei City New Taipei City is a city of many faces. Here one can find diverse culture and attractive sights that will awe every firsttime visitor. The definitive highlight is coastal range which combines the natural and cultural elements in a way unique to New Taipei City. The particular urban impression of New Taipei City serves as an inspiration for the design concept. Incorporating the elements of cloud, mountain hamlet with the Museum, while preserving the existing Sanying Ceramics Theme Park function, creates a multi-faceted urban art center that is open to the whole City.

Art in the Clouds

The centerpiece of the campus is the series of contemporary art galleries that lightly hover over the landscape. Like clouds the galleries and the semi-translucent façades create a landmark at once visible from far afield and glimmer in the sky at night. A restaurant and an observatory atop the galleries further offer panoramic views of the beauty of Sanying. Beneath at ground level the plaza’s energy and excitement are made visible to the rest of the campus from the reflections off the stainless steel ceilings panels, integrating art, nature and urbanism and enhancing the lives of citizens in New Taipei City.

PLAN shaped the space with a series of triangular forms. They not only add cutting edge aesthetics to the space but also remind users of melting iceberg as a result of global warming phenomenon. The forms then morphs to become display shelves, cashier countertop, and wall surfaces, etc.

Surface materials include white lacquer, perforated panels, and stainless steel, which enrich the space’s light and shadow effect in a nearly pure white environment

The highlight of the whole shopping experience comes from an arctic room built from reclaimed wood. The room simulates the extreme climate which FN.ice’s key merchandise, outdoor jacket, would best demonstrate its performance. It has become another attraction to visit the store.

In today’s computer society mouse users are ubiquitous, but only a few understood and actually prevented the damages mice cause from using for a prolonged period of time. Yu Design Group has dedicated and invested our time to develop a wristrest that is true to human ergonomics and would free yourself from the stress that you constantly and unconsciously put on your wrist and shoulder everyday.

Ergonomics the wrist rest is designed to match the curve of your wrist in order to reduce stress on your wrist. Instead of moving your arms, now you only need to use your wrist as a pivot when you move your mouse around. Materiality many of current wrist-rests and related products are made out of foam or cotton, which would deform over time and reduce the effect of wrist rest. Our product is made from 100% silicone, which would maintain its shape for a much longer time. Easy to clean Often we find our mouse, keyboard and wrist-rest dirty over time. With foam or cotton made wrist-rests and all the bacteria and dirt stuck on there, it is difficult to truly clean or even to clean the thing you use hours a day. But with our silicone made product, you are free to clean as many times as you want, whenever you want, without worrying it getting damaged or deformed. Easy to carry and store you can roll the product like a burrito or into any shape you like before putting into your backpack. As long as nothing sharp is next to it, our product holds its own shape no matter how you store it. Sustainability Silicon (quartz based) is widely recognized as a sustainable material. It degrades in soil, is non-toxic, and has an extremely high melting point. Aesthetics the voronoi pattern wrist-rest is not only functional, comfortable and sustainable, but also visually aesthetic. Whether you’re in your studio or office, this wrist-rest is definitely the most eye-catching and beautiful object.
