What to Expect
When Your Mareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Expecting
A
s Spring approaches, excitement is building for the arrival of a new group of foals. Watching young foals play around in the pasture brings pure joy. But getting to this point can sometimes be a challenge. Most of the time all goes to plan, but sometimes things can go awry. It helps to know ways in which your mare can be monitored and managed in the last few months to reduce the chances of problems occurring.
PreparING the Broodmare It is crucial not to over-condition or over-feed your mare. This can bring a myriad of health issues, especially metabolic diseases and laminitis. Most the foalâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s growth occurs in the last trimester (from 8 months of pregnancy). So, your mare can be treated like any other horse until this period. A diet designed for the pregnant mare is ideal as it is balanced with appropriate energy, vitamins and minerals. She should also have free access to quality forage. The adequacy of her diet can be monitored with body condition scoring. When to stop riding your pregnant mare is a debatable topic. Generally, treat your mare like any other horse for the first 6 months of pregnancy with light work and training with nothing too strenuous which could put the mare and foal at risk. Vaccinations should be current, in particular strangles and tetanus (Equivac 2-in-1). A booster vaccination should be given one month prior to foaling to increase the antibody levels in the mareâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s colostrum to help protect the newborn foal. If Equine Herpes Virus (EHV) is a risk on your property, your mare should be vaccinated against EHV-1 and EHV-4 strains. Other Page 12
vaccinations which are important for your mare include Hendra virus. Ensuring your mare is up to date with her deworming protocol is important, especially in the last several weeks of pregnancy as she can be the source of worms infecting her foal.
The mare should not be moved in the last six weeks prior to foaling as this can not only stress her and bring on early foaling, but is also crucial in giving enough time for her to build immunity, and pass antibodies onto the foal via colostrum, to local infectious agents in her area.
IS SHE CASLICKED?
Impending foaling The average length of a mare’s pregnancy is 345 days but there can be a wide variation in normal, from 320 to 380 days. Normally, an individual mare will have a similar pregnancy length every time.
A caslick is a procedure performed by a veterinarian, which involves suturing closed the upper part of the vulva. This is most commonly practiced on mares with undesirable conformation of the perineal area.
It can help to reduce bacterial contamination from manure ascdending and causing infection of the uterus, which may compromise the foal’s healthy development.
It is not unusual for a late term pregnant mare to be sluggish, eat less and generally be less energetic. She may also develop mild swelling under her belly, which is normal. Generally, reduce any stress in the last few weeks of pregnancy.
Mare with recent caslick procedure
If you purchased your mare in foal, it is a good idea to have a veterinarian check for a caslick. An unopened caslick can be disastrous for a foaling mare, due to the foal tearing through the smaller opening.
MONITORING YOUR MARE It is crucial to monitor your mare daily, and closer to the time twice daily, especially in the last few months of pregnancy. Check her vulva, mammary glands and general demeanour. Mares can occasionally abort. This can be caused by placentitis (infection of the placenta), viral diseases (such as Equine Herpes virus), presence of twins, or in certain areas, processionary caterpillars. Early signs of abortion can include early mammary development, running milk, vulval discharge or signs consistent with foaling. Or she may show no signs at all. If you are concerned at all contact your vet immediately. If you mare does abort ensure you keep the foetus, membranes and mare separate from all other horses and contact your veterinarian.
As the mare becomes close to foaling she will show typical changes, including wax appearing on her teats
There are typical changes in the mare as foaling becomes close. Her mammary glands begin to enlarge (two to four weeks prefoaling) and wax will appear on the teats (one to four days pre-foaling). Her vulva will become softer and longer and the muscles of her croup will soften and flatten. Changes in milk electrolytes and pH may help predict foaling but depending on the test, this can be unreliable and testing can be difficult. Monitoring for all these changes is important but how close the changes are to foaling can be quite variable. This means that predicting foaling to the day can often be a bit challenging, and it is recommended to use foaling alarms close to the mare’s due date. It is always a good idea to monitor the mare’s foaling, as things can go wrong in a matter of minutes. As foaling season begins to approach it is crucial to be aware of the management your pregnant mare may need. Eleven months is an awful long time to wait to have something go wrong with the potential to have devastating effects on the foal and or your mare.

The stud is currently in the process of being developed into a top class facility with large paddocks, day yards, foaling yards, stallion yards and much more to come. Although the Midas horses haven’t competed this year due to Covid-19 and Rhys and Sharla‘s involvement with the improvements to the property, they did have a very successful 2019 WA Pinto State Championships with Glenwood Park Exclamation taking out Grand Champion Pinto over 14h. It was a highlight of their year, especially as he is now semi-retired from competition. At Midas Performance Horses the aim has always been to produce the highest quality coloured performance horses with the agility, temperament, movement and conformation required for show horse, dressage and eventing.
Jindalee Australian Stockhorses have been members of the ASH Society since 1994 with their registered breeding prefix JINDALEE. Located at ‘TARULA’ a beautiful fertile 200 acre property just west of Young, NSW, they stand the Australian Stock Horse stallion Casanova and run a small band of specially selected broodmares producing quality progeny with type, looks and temperament. Cassanova’s dam, Rosebrook Cillawood was a National level polocrosse mare and was the stud’s foundation broodmare. She produced foals that all excelled at National level at polocrosse and showing. Cassanova himself is a multi-Supreme in led and ridden events and stud owners, Sam and Steve are looking forward to seeing more of his progeny stepping out into the competition arena, especially some of the progeny out of warmblood mares, which Casanova is complimenting very nicely. Together, Steve and Sam also run a breaking-in and training establishment with a good clientele. Steve breaks-in a lot of Warmbloods as well as Australian Stock Horses. The property is ideal for starting young horses as it has flat work areas as well as hilly country and highway frontage, so young horses get to take a lot of experiences home with them when clients pick them up. Their stallion, Glenwood Park Exclamation, has recently produced a beautiful 79% bay and white coloured filly out of a lovely Purebred Arabian mare owned by Jacky Jurmann. This filly has exceeded all expectations and is anticipated to be out competing in the show ring very soon. “We still have one foal to be born for the 2020 season,” said Sharla, “it’s a much anticipated cross between our stallion Mallawa Park Pseudo Echo and a recently arrived Australian Pony Mare.” Breeding is well under way with both resident stallions at Midas and, come September 2021 there will be several performance foals available for purchase at weaning. Lynne Bunce, a protegee of Stud founder Mrs Nola Cameron, who has been involved with the breeding program for decades is now steering the Stud’s incredible bloodline into the next decade. “Mrs Cameron bred a phenomenal group of Arabian horses known as Marbling Arabians, however there comes a time when life must end and in February 2018, we lost our dear friend and matriarch. Although I have had the Arabian reins for some time it is now official, the horses of Marbling Arabians are now in my care. Together with my husband Kim, we are guiding the stud through the next generations under the banner of Mattilda Arabians, same horses, same plan with of course lots of instructions left by Mrs Cameron! “The last decade has been dedicated to infusing outcross genetics into the breeding program with the resulting stock now being of an age where they can compete. The first of these horses was awarded five State Championships and one Reserve State Championship at his very first show. “We would like to thank our clients, these are the people who have the foresight to see the potential and allow our horses to perform at their absolute best. Kismet Park Stud’s Kim Thomas started breeding one or two foals a year in 1996, with the aim of breeding Welsh A and Part Welsh Ponies that the whole family could enjoy. Since then they’ve produced many successful ponies with their first colt San-Del Poster arriving in 2005. Fast forward to 2020 and there’s been a few changes taking place with their stallion Popstar being gelded this year, which resulted in a spur-ofthe-moment decision to purchase Barn Hill Faroah, an 11.2hh palomino Welsh Mountain Pony. When Faroah arrived in WA from NSW he went straight in to the show ring after a ten year absence from the ring; and what a comeback he’s had, winning Supreme of Supreme Pony at the Warren Agricultural Show. Kim’s now eagerly awaiting his first foals for the Stud in 2021. In more stud news Kim explains, “We are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our first foal by home bred Kismet Park Balladeer. Two WA studs, She Oak Quarter Horses and Kintore Paints and Quarter Horses, are excited at the prospect of having the outstanding sire OHK Krymsun Zip returning home after spending the past four years on the east coast. Chevvy (as Krymsun Zip is known) is the only Quarter Horse stallion standing in Australia that has produced three USA High Point End of the Year Champions (2013 ~ 2014). The senior stallion will now be residing at Sue Benthien’s She Oak Stud in Serpentine where he will be joining Shining Priority (QH), who no longer stands to public stud, and a select number of quality Quarter Horse and Paint mares from the two studs. Owner of Kintore Stud, Sarah Guy reports that her buckskin medicine hat, three year old Paint colt, Kintore Elusive Lover has spent the past 12 months maturing in the paddock due to her work commitments, but is now ready to come in and start some serious work under saddle. Both studs have stock for sale; Sue has a couple of ‘Chevvy’ progeny and Sarah has a selection of Quarter Horses and Paints available. While maintaining a love of the Quarter Horse and Paint breeds Sue has had a serious interest in the Thoroughbred Industry for many years but now they are sharing those interests and have had some success with their breeding program and race horses. Diana Mathewson plans a quiet 2020/21 season for her Pure Crabbet Arabian stallion Kasdell Dane. A paddock accident as a young horse meant that this stallion never achieved the performance record for which he was bred. His sire, Arfaja Danyon was a successfull show horse on the east coast and ‘Dane’ was originally purchased as a sire for producing riding horses. “Dane is going to have a quiet, peaceful season this year. I am going to let his frozen semen do the work. He has a barren mare for company and lovely paddocks to graze in at our Balingup property.” The stallion has sired many riding horses, their temperaments appealing to horse owners looking for versatile and well mannered horses. INTERNATIONAL STALLIONS and IMPORTED MARES, AN EXCITING COMBINATION AT HERMITAGE
Hermitage Dressage has historically operated as a stallion station and training facility. However, the birth of their first home bred offspring in November 2018 ushered in a change in focus for them in 2019 as they looked to the strengths of their international stallions and beautiful, imported mares and recognised that others may wish to share in the joy they bring to them every day. Heidi Emery from Hermitage hopes the 2020 breeding season will prove to be a watershed year as they cross their fingers that the stork will be kind and safely deliver their first foals to be made available to the public - either by private sale or via partnership agreement to approved homes. Hermitage has a full sibling due to their Sole Mio HD (Sandro Bedo/Dancier) and an exciting combination of bloodlines from their mare Saskia (Scolari/Fremder) and beloved Skywalker (Future Cup/Donnerhall).

SPANISH IMPORTED MARE JOINS EMPIRE PRE STUD Empire Pre Stud is situated on a small cattle farm in Narrikup, WA in the Great Southern, which gives RoseMary Driscoll many kilometres of riding out country for her PRE stallion Hanna Poderoso, imp NZ. The pair have started checking cattle, which is vastly different to this stallion’s early discipline performance career, however he has accepted the career change calmly and has risen to the challenge. The stud has announced the purchase of the mare Sajona (imp Spain) from Tranquilo Lodge, NSW. In foal (AI) to PRE Stallion Artico VIK (Spain) RoseMary is hoping Sajana will produce a filly that will be retained as breeding stock for the stud. Once foaled, Sajona will be put back in foal to Hanna Poderoso with the resulting foal being his first registered PRE foal, which will be retained as part of the foundation for the stud. A partbred colt by Hanna Poderoso is maturing to show the characteristics of his sire, including his outstanding movement and great temperament. See advert on page 15.
HELP SUPPORT CLEVELAND BAY HORSES ON THE ENDANGERED LIST The Cleveland Bay horses need your support as with only 12 in Australia and 500 worldwide everything is being done to help the breed survive. The Queen helped when she took on a Cleveland Bay stallion and offered his services to British breeders back in the 1960’s but in Australia there are limited bloodlines. A group have got together to purchase Texlea Saint Oliver from Bill and Barb Henderson in South Australia, so he can be used to help perpetuate the breed in this country.

INCREASED INTEREST IN FREEZING SEMEN AT MURRAY VETS
This season Murray Veterinary Services have seen a big rise in interest in freezing stallion’s semen as Dr Phillipa Wallace explains, “Freezing stallions’ semen has many advantages over chilled and live cover options as the stallion’s genetics are permanently preserved and protected. In the event of an accident, illness or loss your stallion’s genetics and breed lines are permanently preserved. Frozen semen is also convenient for the stallion and stallion owner, as once the stallion has been collected the semen is then available at any stage. Unlike chilled or live cover options, which means trips to your vet each time semen is requested for a chilled collection or mare visits for live coves. Also, the stallion can be collected out of season, which means that during the busy breeding season he never has to leave your property.” Dr Wallace points out the impact that COVID 19 has caused with severe disruption to freight networks and delays to freight services. Chilled semen is only viable for 24 to 36 hours after collection so shipping interstate becomes a big risk if freight is delayed. Because frozen semen stores indefinitely (if stored correctly) it means it can be shipped and stored interstate and be ready before the mare is even ready to be bred. Frozen semen shippers generally have a 10 day hold capacity so freight delays become less of a critical issue. Murray Vets have also had a big interest in foaling down services at the hospital. They provide a foaling down service on site in their safe and purpose-built foaling paddocks. Plus with Veterinarians living permanently on site they are able to have an experienced veterinarian attending the foaling at all times. The proximity of the foaling down paddocks to the clinic also means ready access to neonatal care facilities immediately upon foaling. Jody Mckenzie from Rowen Welsh Cobs Stud had a great start to the 2020 show season. Their two year old Rowen Gretel (by Pennal The Great UK frozen semen) took out Supreme Youngstock at the Welsh Pony and Cob Society show in February. This was a couple of weeks pre the COVID-19 lockdown. More recently Jody was thrilled to announce the arrival of the full sister to this filly in September. As most of the stud’s young broodmares are the daughters of their imported stallion Gwynfaes Madoc, they have resorted to using international bloodlines via A.I., always an expensive exercise but very exciting when you get the foals on the ground. The Stud’s 2019 foals include a palomino colt by Menai Cardi Llwyd - the first of his foals in Australia - and a buckskin filly by Taraco Firecracker. The imported filly Trevallion Champagne Moments will be covered by Gwynfaes Madoc
this season, so should be a very interesting foal. Meanwhile, it’s always great to see the grown up Rowen ponies out and about with their owners. Rowen Rock Royal (Angus) with his new owner, Holly Fiore starting an eventing career. Rowen Monsoon and Wynne doing dressage with Paige Szabadics, Rowen Miss Minesota - a great all rounder for Georgie Colebrook, Rowen Black Magic in harness with Dennis Wise, to name just a few. Jody always enjoys getting news from Rowen bred owners. AN EXCITING SEASON AHEAD FOR VALLEY EQUINE CENTRE Valley Equine Veterinary Centre is looking forward to another exciting season of breeding, embryo transfer, stallion collection and delivering foals. Last season Dr Bell-Cross was certainly kept busy on the embryo transfer front, with 16 successful ET pregnancies and another two embryos harvested for freezing, and the Centre’s recipient mare herd is ready for action again this year. Several foals have already been safely delivered by the experienced team at the Swan Valley based veterinary centre and they are eagerly awaiting the arrival of more new babies over the upcoming weeks. LONDON PARK, BREEDING, STARTING AND EDUCATING CHILDREN’S PONIES Nestled on the edge of the Darling Scarp with a valley of rich grazing pasture, the historic property, Kuanua runs cattle and ponies and is home to the Anderson family who have London Park Stud. A family run farm, the Andersons have over 40 years experience in breeding and showing horses. London Park Stud breeds Welsh Ponies of Cob Type with their senior stallion Newgap Tom Jones IMP and his son London Park Royal Line - out of their Imported mare Fronarth Jessie J. They have a further three junior colts, one of which is by their imported Palomino stallion, Brohedydd Jack Sparrow. These three will make their mark on the breed in years to come.
Jakoma Equestrian Park - breeding quality Australian horses from imported bloodlines Air Wings Z is the resident stallion at stud for Jakoma Equestrian Park, a WA based stud that in the past few years has focused on breeding a small quantity of quality young jumping bred horses. Their first investment was the purchase of Yalambi Waltzing Matilda, followed by a couple of quality mares they imported from Europe, Gladdys van De Breemeersen and JEP Antoinette. Air Wings Z (Errol) was then purchased and imported from Europe as a 2 year old. He is registered with the Zangersheide Stud Book in Europe and is also an Australian Warmblood Horse Association (AWHA) registered and licenced stallion. Another, more modern lines imported mare, JEP Heart Warming JB then joined the stud.
The stud has twelve brood mares, many of which are Welsh Pony and Cob Society Medal Winners, and they are expecting the arrival of seven foals for the 2020 season. London Park also offers starting and educating of children’s saddle ponies for the show ring and pleasure riding. This is something that the family all enjoy and all take part in - one way or another. Catherine and her daughter Emily care for and educate the ponies, from ground work to ridden work to the show ring, and the boys take care of all the maintenance.
While there has been some recent changes at Jakoma they are still breeding a few carefully selected foals and have some wonderfully talented riders riding their horses.
The facilities include thirteen horse stables with huge boxes, plenty of space for paddock rest, shaded day yards, a lovely big, open, all-weather round yard, and a fully set-up working hunter course, as well as X- country jumps. Currently working on the arena they hope to have this under cover by next year. The tranquil setting includes great bush and trail riding round the property that encompasses hills, large open paddocks, streams and rivers.

Errol has been bred across a range of mares and has passed on his amazing willing, can-do attitude, work ethic and jump. He does refine the bigger mares but doesn’t breed small. At this stage Jakoma only have a few horses available for sale so please contact them if interested. NEW PURPOSE BUILT EQUINE PERFORMANCE AND LAMENESS CENTRE AT OLBURY EQUINE CLINIC The team are busy at Oldbury Equine Clinic with the final touches happening on their new purpose built equine performance and lameness centre which will encompass the use of the latest Equinosis lameness locator. The centre includes a 70 x 30m arena to investigate poor performance and lameness under saddle. There is also a purpose built 30m hard trot up strip, large hard and soft surface lunging area being installed, and a free lunge soft surfaced assessment area. The new imaging room and remedial farriery centre will also be completed in September to assist with these investigations.

In staffing news the Oldbury team has expanded, welcoming Dr Warwick Vale BSc BVMS who has joined the Clinic in a consultant role supporting Dr Michael Harwood BVSc Cert AVP MRCVS in poor performance investigation and offering his surgical skills to the team. Dr Simone Deetman BSc BVMS and Dr Elizabeth Woodberry BSc BVMS also joined the team in June, bringing with them many years of experience in the equine vet industry at Hospital and University levels. Both Dr Simone and Dr Liz share Dr Michael’s passion for equine reproduction as well as all routine equine veterinary work. Lastly but not least Dr Steph Brooder BVSc (Hons) BVetBiol MRCVS is joining the team and will be working part time with Oldbury Equine and part time with Dr Kirsten Jackson at her Dental Vet Hospital down the road in Oakford. CAICOS KID’S FIRST FOAL FOR ROSEAKER Roseaker Performance Horses are excited to announce the safe arrival of their first foal for the 2020 stud season. The filly Chic is by their new imported AMQHA and AQHA stallion The Caicos Kid and out of a lovely Lethal Lena mare they have in their band of broodmares. Roseaker Stud’s Joanne Campbell explains, “She is a quality filly and we plan on retaining her to show and train in Cow Horse and Western Disciplines. At 3 weeks old she is showing a lot of talent already. The Caicos Kid will be out campaigning in Ranch Sorting until later in the year and although it is his first season campaigning with Edward in Cow sports, he is showing some serious cowing up abilities and a calm temperament when out showing.

ARABIAN STUD, MAIN ANGUS AND KOI FISH AT NORAN Things at Noran Arabian Stud in Serpentine never seem to slow down. Being a family concern they all do their bits, from their Arabian horses to stud Maine Angus cattle to Polled Wiltshire sheep to the Koi fish farm, now the largest Koi breeding farm in Australia. On the horse side of the family business there have been three foals born so far this season, all purebred Arabians, and the Walls are well pleased with the quality their stallions and mares are producing, and now it is breeding time again. This season several frozen breedings will be on the agenda, so all is go go go, with lots of anticipation. Although times are a bit tough in Australia, the stallions of Noran have created a lot of interest Australia wide. Hopefully Noran will see more foals in the future on the East Coast, following in the hoofprints of Silver 2020 Australian Arabian Champion Filly, Noran Sansa in the show ring when shows start again in the future. Norm, Nancy and Kylie are a dynamic team who each bring a wealth of knowledge and experience to the business, and they work together to promote and help anyone who wants to invest in and enjoy the beautiful Arabian horse. ecent research, in the field of reproduction in horses, has focused on the role of antioxidants to support the biochemical process of sperm formation and motility. Antioxidants are compounds that help defend cells from damage caused by potentially harmful molecules known as free radicals.
supplementation with antioxidants may increase fertility in some stallions.
When free radicals accumulate, they may cause a state known as oxidative stress. One such antioxidant is CoEnzyme Q10 (CoQ10), whilst another antioxidant is Vitamin E (alpha tocopherol). Reviews and research examining CoQ10 in relation to fertility are showing some significant benefits for stallions. Equine sperm requires energy so it can move independently, and this energy is created via a process called oxidative phosphorylation. The resulting actions can create oxidative stress and disturbances in cell function. Whilst fertilisation can occur when low levels of oxidative stress are present, it is considered to increase the risk of embryonic loss, abortion or foetal growth retardation. At higher levels, oxidative stress disturbances can occur with DNA, protein and membrane damage, and reduced motility and sperm viability. To combat this effect, the horses’ body uses its stores of antioxidants, and therefore antioxidant supply from feed, and supplementation to boost antioxidant reserves can play an important role in successful fertilisation by the stallion. With one of the main goals during both natural service and AI situations being extending the lifespan of the sperm, optimising motility and reducing sperm damage prior to fertilisation,
Researchers (Bayly et al 2020) investigated the effect of oral CoQ10 supplementation for 30 days on semen parameters in stallions being collected for chilling or frozen semen. Horses with good semen quality showed no change, but supplementation led to increased motility and viability of semen within 15 days in 5 subfertile horses. These positive effects also continued for 30 days after supplementation finished, indicating a benefit for the lifecycle of the sperm. Brazilian researchers (Lagares et al 2020) investigated the addition of various doses of CoQ10 to the semen extender (a liquid diluent which is added to semen to protect the sperm cells from their own toxic by products, and protects the sperm cells from cold shock and osmotic shock during the chilling and shipping process) and found that specific doses of CoQ10 can play a key role as an antioxidant by significantly reducing the levels of free radicals and oxidative substances in equine sperm. These recent developments are supported by findings in previous studies. In 2018, researchers (Canisso et al) found that the addition of CoQ10 to centrifugation extender improved the semen quality from stallions

with a history of poor semen freezing ability. In another study, Nogueria et al (2015) found that CoQ10 and Vitamin E supplementation prevented the oxidative degradation of fatty acids in cooled equine semen from fertile stallions. When seminal plasma was diluted and removed during chilling of equine semen, the addition of CoQ10 to an extender led to significantly higher motility in chilled semen, whilst both CoQ10 and Vitamin E supplementation led to reduced indicators of oxidative stress in chilled semen.
These positive developments supporting the role of CoQ10 in fertility processes in both the mare and the stallion could be particularly useful to breeders looking to enhance fertilisation prospects, extending the lifespan of the sperm, optimise motility and reducing sperm damage prior to fertilisation to achieve higher rates of pregnancy.
