Things never seem to slow down, with Norm busy seeding and spreading chicken poop on the paddocks and making the farm look its best for many years. Fencing is being replaced, and as Nancy said, “You know when you have been on the same property for a long time when you start replacing fencing. All the holes were hand dug originally but now Gary Simmons to the rescue, as he is ramming them in for us old folks.”
The Noran cattle breeding has become more serious as they have just implanted five frozen embryos into their Maine Anjou cows and looks like three have held, so exciting times.
Nancy will be judging at the Australasian Arabian Breeders Coalition - The International Championships in NSW in February then a few weeks later is off to NZ to judge there. Norm is accompanying Nancy as her official ‘baggage carrier’…….so he says.

Building Karen Nicoletto Show Horses
Hidden away behind a stunning black fence line in the Swan Valley you’ll find the property where owner Karen Nicoletto is building a dream for the future.
Combining a breeding and training program, along with a full time job and redeveloping a property is a mammoth task that Karen handles with a smile and boundless energy. The property consists of four hectares (ten acres) that Karen is redeveloping from scratch - completely reorganising the fencing to have horse-safe fences, yards and paddocks for foals and installing irrigation for the property. Everything has been done with a business plan in mind for future coaching and horse management.
It was pivotal for Karen to have a working arena and round yard, so these were the first things addressed. Adding to the existing six horse stable were the two purpose built freestanding 4m x 6m stables with yards for mares and foals or visiting horses. These are unique in that they have open mesh from chest height to the roof on all four sides, ensuring ventilation, good sight to other horses and are of a size to keep horses comfortable.
Karen stands the stallion ‘Heez Zippin Hot’ - a senior Quarter Horse - who is now retired to stud where he continues to produce top progeny that are winning Australia wide. Breeding one of her own each year, Karen has retained a few young horses for her showing endeavours, whilst other progeny and grand progeny are competing successfully around Australia.
By necessity, the property has been designed for easy-care and the safe handling and moving of horses as sometimes, when you work full time, horse-work is done in the dark! A time-saving feature of the property are the green wheelie bins filled with hay and positioned in the lane-way of each horse’s paddock, making feeding an easy task on those cold mornings and dark nights.
The roomy paddocks are set out in a grid design with lane-way access to all. The paddocks are filled with an assortment of horses, from foals to some of Karen’s retired performance Appaloosas and Quarter Horses. It is a great working property set-up that simplifies handling and management of horses. Still to be achieved is a wash-bay, tie up
and hay storage area and a revamp of the stables and other infrastructure.
Operating a stud is always made easier when you are situated next door to a vet, and in Karen’s case, Valley Equine Veterinary Centre is on her doorstep should the need arise. The breeding side of the business is a positive aspect of the stud as she loves the handling of the young horses, which are started at home with some then sent over East for advanced training and showing as the Western scene is much bigger over there.
A long term trainer/assessor and teacher at Edmond Rice College in Bindoon, where her work involves VET, Ag Science, APS and equine education, Karen’s ultimate aim for the property is to create a learning centre that will help equestrians and school students achieve their Equestrian Australia Intro Horse Management and Intro Riding and other equine accreditations, as well as conduct clinics and continuing with her coaching and training of the young horses. Another aspect that will be included in the master plan is Equine Assisted Therapy as Karen is a qualified Equine Assisted Facilitator and it is easy to see how her love of horses and love of teaching can all come together so her well-laid ‘dream
