The buzz a

bout...

Bioengineered Food Bioengineered foods, also called genetically modified foods (GMOs), were introduced in the 1990’s and, while the name makes them sounds exotic, bioengineered crops are present in a good number of processed foods you buy at the grocery store. Here is an overview of how bioengineered foods are developed, along with some of the potential pros and cons of growing and consuming bioengineered foods.

What is a bioengineered food?

A bioengineered food comes from a plant or animal that has been genetically modified in a laboratory to enhance a trait, like resistance to disease. People have used breeding for hundreds of years to produce plants and animals with desired traits, and genetic engineering does the job much more quickly. Bioengineered crops are used both for human consumption and in feed for livestock.

What kinds of bioengineered foods are sold in the US?

Bioengineered corn, soybeans, squash, tomatoes, and sugar beets are sold in the U.S. Most of the bioengineered corn is turned into high fructose corn syrup. If you have eaten processed food containing high fructose corn syrup, you most likely have consumed a bioengineered food. There are efforts to create bioengineered fish and livestock, but no bioengineered fish or meat has been approved yet for human consumption.

Who tests and approved bioengineered foods before they are released for sale?

Currently, the FDA approves the sale of bioengineered foods. One concern that many have is that the FDA does not have a thorough enough testing process for bioengineered foods before approving them to be put on the market. Currently, the testing of a bioengineered food for safety consists of studies done by the manufacturer. Recently, there has been an effort by the some states to pass laws to require bioengineered foods to be labeled.

Are there any advantages?

Bioengineered foods can be designed to be more nutritious and to be more resistant to disease and pests. Some bioengineered crops are also designed to be resistant to herbicides, which enables farmers to spray fields with weed-killing herbicides without damaging the crops.

Are there any risks for eating bioengineered foods?

There are concerns that bioengineered foods may cause allergic reactions, since proteins found in one plant are being introduced into another. For example, a person allergic to peanuts could have a reaction if he consumed a bioengineered corn containing peanut proteins. At this point, there have not been enough long term studies for many scientists to feel correct in concluding that there are no long term risks to consuming bioengineered food. More long term studies and more data is needed for before any clear conclusions regarding the long term safety of bioengineered foods can be reached.

Does growing bioengineered crops pose a risk to the environment?

Yes, it is possible that bioengineered crops could pose a risk to the surrounding environment. Bioengineered crops can contaminate other crops and plants nearby by cross pollinating them. If weeds harmful to crops receive the herbicide resistance genes from bioengineered crops, herbicide resistant ‘super weeds’ could be created. Also, the crops that contain a pesticide gene are not selective as far as which insects they kill, so insects that are not pests but are essential to the surrounding ecosystem, could be harmed.

How can I avoid buying bioengineered food?

Going organic is your best bet, since the FDA does not require bioengineered foods to be labeled. Bioengineered crops cannot be labeled as organic, and meat or poultry labeled as organic cannot have been given feed containing bioengineered food products.

Hoo’s Tips Managing money is an important life skill and it is never too early to introduce smart money management concepts to your kids. Here are some tips to get your kids started:

1.

Introduce your preschooler to the value of money by playing money identification games. Try games like ‘pretend store’, where your preschooler identifies the right coin amount needed to make a ‘purchase’. Coins are a choking hazard for very young children, so printing out play money with pictures of the different coins on it may be a good idea.

2.

Most kids are ready for the responsibility of an allowance by age 6. It is not a good idea to tie their allowance to chores. Instead, install a good work ethic in your child by teaching them that doing chores is part of their daily expectations, and praise them for contributing to the family when they do a good job. If your child wants to earn extra money, you could make an exception to this and pay them for completing a task that is outside his regular chore list.

3.

Once your child receives an allowance, create a place for them to keep their money. Teach them to budget and save by using a see-through container that is divided into three parts labeled ‘Live’, ‘Save’, and ‘Give’. The ‘Live’ section holds money for purchases, ‘Save’ is for collecting money for a savings account. The ‘Give’ section is for collecting money to donate to a charity. Using a see-through container allows your child to see their progress.

HOO’s PARENTING

SLEEP MISTAKES Newborns sleep a lot and eat about every 2-4 hours, so there is no set schedule to their day. Around the age of 4 months, your baby has matured enough to be put on a sleep schedule that will keep naps and bed time more consistent. Here are some common sleep mistakes that you will want to avoid while you are transitioning them to a sleep schedule. Once your baby is four months old, they are ready to be put in a crib, while awake. Create a bedtime routine, like taking a bath and putting pajamas on, they will associate this with 'it's time to sleep'. It may seem easier to rock your baby to sleep, but you don't want to have to rock them back to sleep every time they wakes during the night.

Your baby may not fall asleep right away or may fuss after waking during night. Once your baby is over 4 months old, wait a few minutes to see if they will asleep on their own before picking her up. Around 9 months, babies may figure out that fussing can earn them extra play time with mom. Go and check on her but resist the temptation to let her stay up. Running errands may seem more peaceful when your baby is napping, but letting her snooze in the stroller at odd times of the day can mess up her sleep schedule. Also, she may get so used to napping on the go that she won't fall asleep unless she is in her stroller. Work your errands around your baby's nap schedule so that she is mostly sleeping in her crib.

HOO’S at the Movies woman in gold PG-13 | Ok for kids 13+ This is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after fleeing Vienna during World War II, a Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), embarks on a mission to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting “The Lady in Gold.” Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer, Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), their journey takes them to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court.

monkey kingdom G | Ok for kids 5+ This year’s “Earth Day” movie from Disneynature is “Monkey Kingdom,” throwing a spotlight on a newborn monkey and its mother. Struggling to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins in the jungles of South Asia, they’re joined by a rich cast of forest characters. Life is grand, food is plentiful, and safety is assured, but only if you’re lucky enough to be born on the higher rungs of the Troop’s social ladder..

the age of adaline PG-13 for a suggestive comment | Ok for kids 13+ After miraculously remaining 29 years old for nearly eight decades, Adaline (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford, Kathy Baker) threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

little boy PG-13 for some thematic elements and violence | Ok for kids 5+ This powerful and moving film set in the 1940s follows a little boy (Jakob Salvati) who’s willing to do whatever it takes to bring his dad home from World War II alive. Directed by Smithsonian Institute Award winning director Alejandro Monteverde, this “lift your spirits” movie highlights themes of faith, hope and love in the face of adversity, and also stars Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, and Ben Chaplin. It’s executive produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett (“Son of God,” the upcoming NBC series “A.D.,” and Paramount’s remake of “Ben-Hur”).

desert dancer PG-13 for thematic elements, some drug and violence | Ok for kids 13+ Set in Iran, this powerful and unbelievable true story follows the brave ambition of Afshin Ghaffarian (Reece Ritchie). During the volatile climate of the 2009 presidential election, where many cultural freedoms were threatened, Afshin and some friends, including Elaheh (Freida Pinto), risk their lives to form an underground dance company. Through banned online videos, they study timeless legends who cross all cultural divides, including Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev, and learn how to embrace their passion for dance and each other.

Autism HOO’s INSPIRED Awareness Month: It’s More than Wearing Blue By Stephanie Guidry, Autism Society Bayou

The month of April brings rain, crawfish boils, Easter holidays, and the promotion of blue light bulb sales at hardware stores in our area. The blue concept is meant to celebrate Autism Awareness Month, a time when families of children with autism come together. Some will visit sensory friendly museums and events, others will participate in 5Ks to raise money. Teachers, grandparents, and supporters of families will wear a ribbon, swap their light bulbs, and drop some (desperately needed) cash into donation boxes for organizations that provide support for families of children with autism. Autism Awareness Month is important, but we are hopeful that the good spirit of our neighbors will last year-round.

Early intervention has proven most beneficial, and therapeutic interventions such as speech therapy, occupational therapy, and Applied Behavior Analysis therapy are vital in helping children reach their full potential.

Autism spectrum disorder is a neurobiological disorder that typically appears within the first three years of life. Common signs and symptoms include speech delays, lack of eye contact, delays in typical developmental milestones, repetitive behaviors, intense interests and sensory processing difficulties. The CDC estimates that 1 in 68 children in the U.S. will be diagnosed with autism, and 1 in 54 boys will be diagnosed. Diagnosis is usually made by a pediatrician or a specialist.

Our children may display different behaviors that may be mistaken for “misbehaving”, but if you look a bit closer, you will see that our kids are much the same as any other. This Autism Awareness Month, commit to take your support further, long after the blue light has been taken down. Our families are worth it.

Despite all of the therapies and interventions, Bayou Region families still need support from our community. We want camaraderie, not sympathy for our children. It is vital that our children are integrated into society as much as possible, with the same opportunities. Our children wish to visit shops, restaurants, movie theatres, attend sporting events, church services, and simply having the chance to play at a park with everyone else.

Pediatricians have recognized that children have many different types of headaches, including migraines.

sweating, or even feeling feverish. Children with migraines appear ill, uncomfortable and pale, and can have dark circles around their eyes.

Migraine headaches are best diagnosed by obtaining a detailed history and a thorough neurological exam. There are characteristics of childhood migraines that are different from those of adult migraines. For example, adult females have a higher incidence of migraines, males dominate in the childhood population.

It seems that migraine headaches in childhood may be precipitated by hunger and lack of sleep, as well as stress. But stress for a child may be positive, like being excited, as well as typical negative stressors.

Childhood migraines often are shorter in duration than an adult migraine and are less often unilateral (one-sided). Only 2560 percent of children will have a unilateral headache, while 75-90 percent of adults have unilateral pain. Children may have a behavioral change with irritability, pallor, malaise, or loss of appetite preceding the headache. About 18 percent of children describe migraine with an aura, and another 13 percent may have migraines without. When taking a history, it’s also important to ask about family history of migraines, as they seem to “run in families”. Children who develop migraines were also often noted to be “fussy” infants. They also have an increased incidence of sleep disorders, including night terrors and nightmares. Many parents also report a history of motion sickness. When children discuss their headaches, they often complain of feeling dizzy. They may also complain of blurred vision, abdominal pain, nausea and vomiting, chills,

Children will also tell you that their headaches are aggravated by physical activity (including going up and down stairs, carrying a backpack, or even just bending over). They also complain of photophobia (light sensitivity) and phonophobia (sensitive to noises) and typically a parent will report that their child goes to bed in a dark room or goes to sleep when experiencing these symptoms. Children with migraines don’t watch TV or play video games during their headaches. They are quiet, may not want to eat and may just want to rest. Nothing active typically “sounds” like fun. To meet the diagnostic criteria for childhood migraine, a child needs to have at least five of these “attacks.” A headache log is helpful, as these headaches may occur randomly and it’s difficult to remember what the headache was like or how long it lasted without keeping a log. There are many new drugs are available for treating child hood migraines. You can discuss this with your pediatrician upon diagnosis.

How to Win the

HOO’s learning

HOMEWORK WAR One of the most commonly waged battles between parents and children is over homework. Even with the best of intentions, tackling this ongoing dilemma in positive and constructive ways can be a constant challenge. Be a homework manager. Don’t do your child’s homework, but provide the structure and tools needed to complete assignments successfully. Often, it’s the lack of planning that makes homework seem overwhelming. Know your child. Because each child is unique, with different learning styles and academic needs, it is important to personalize the learning process. Develop a work schedule and study environment based on your child’s personal learning style. Break long-term assignments into smaller segments. Larger projects will be less

overwhelming when viewed as a series of incremental tasks. Set milestones. Teach your child to display completion dates on a calendar to help stay on track and complete projects on time Celebrate success. A celebration gives your child a sense of accomplishment and pride. Make your home a place for learning. Set up a simple table or desk in a well-lit area. Add a supply of pens, pencils, markers and paper and you’re set. Be an example. Parents can help encourage learning activities by example. Read with your children. Discuss trips and experiences. Keep your own daily journal.

HOO’s HEALTHY

Exercise Induced Asthma Does your child seem to have a hard time catching their breath when they exercise or play hard? If so, he may not just be out of shape. He may have a condition called exercise-induced asthma. Exercise-induced asthma is also called exerciseinduced bronchoconstriction (EIB). Some kids with exerciseinduced asthma also have an underlying chronic asthma condition. Other kids only experience asthma symptoms when they exercise and are otherwise healthy EIB occurs when the muscle bands around the airways constrict, resulting in a narrowing of the airways.

This narrowing leads to feeling short of breath while exercising and even difficulty breathing normally afterwards. Other symptoms include a feeling of tightness in the chest, wheezing, coughing, and fatigue. The symptoms typically appear within 5 to 20 minutes of starting to exercise. An exact cause for EIB has not been identified but there are certain circumstances that seem to make an attack more likely. When exercising outdoors, an asthma attack may be a reaction to breathing in cold, dry air. For kids with allergies, exercising outside when the pollen count or air pollution level is high can also help trigger this reaction. If your child experiences symptoms of EIB, make an appointment for them to be evaluated by their pediatrician. The doctor may ask your child to perform a breathing test after exercising. A diagnosis of EIB does not mean your child will have to avoid all athletic activities, the doctor may just provide a plan to help manage it. Keep in mind that activities that require short periods of activity, like baseball or gymnastics, are less likely to trigger asthma symptoms than endurance activities like long distance running.
