HOO’s HEALTHY
When to Call the Doctor
For most children who are otherwise healthy, catching a common childhood illness, such as a cold or the stomach bug, is not a cause for panic. Colds and stomach bugs are caused by viruses, and you can usually treat the symptoms at home. However, monitor your child's symptoms closely and be on the lookout for symptoms that indicate it is time to call the doctor. Here are a few of them: High Fever:
Trouble breathing:
Dehydration:
Stops eating:
When an infant under 3 months runs a fever, call the doctor right away. Same for infants 3-6 months with 102 degrees or more. Over 6 months, call if over 103 degrees. Anytime your child has a fever along with a rash or stiffness in the neck, contact the doctor without delay.
When your child has a cold and their coughing becomes so severe they cannot sleep, you need to call the doctor right away. If their breathing becomes labored or they are breathing rapidly, it is time to seek immediate medical attention.
If your child is producing less urine than usual or has dark colored urine, they may be dehydrated. Also, if your child is dehydrated, they may stop producing tears or their eyes may look sunken in. Call the doctor right away if you think your child is showing any signs of dehydration.
A child with a cold or stomach bug may not feel much like eating. However, if they eat or drink less than half of their normal portion of food and drink and it’s been more than two days, then it is time to let their doctor know of the issue.

HOO’s HELPFUL If you have a picky eater that won't eat but two or three favorite foods and pushes everything else away, meal time can feel more like a stressful battle of wills rather than a time to relax. Here are some strategies for encouraging your child to try new foods and reducing stress at meal time. First, stay calm when you are trying to work with your picky eater. Your child may be enjoying all the attention she receives when she is picky and makes demands. When she asks to try a new food, provide it to her, but don't make a big deal out of it. When she refuses to try
985.447.1810
Picky Eaters
something, keep your cool and just offer it again the next day. Experts say that, on the average, it can take about ten attempts before a very picky eater will even try a new food. When you do try to introduce a new food, start with a very small portion. If you are tired of drama at the dinner table, you may want to introduce the new food at snack time. Plan ahead and invite some of her friends over to play who are not picky and will set an example by eating the food you are trying to introduce. Your child may see her friends eating it and think that it is worth trying. Once your child
does try a new food, slowly start increasing the portion size each day the new food is offered, until you reach a size appropriate for her age.
If your child seems to always be snacking or drinking juice, you may want to restrict the snacking and servings of juice to one snack time in the morning and another in the afternoon. If your child is a little hungry, she is more likely to want to try a new food.

HOO’s CRAFTY plastic easter egg
maracas A clever way to turn your left over plastic eggs into something fun and musical.
Directions First, have the kids half fill the eggs with rice or beans. Next, place the egg between two plastic spoons. Then tape around the spoons to secure the egg. Then, add some strips of tape across the top to cover the top of the egg. Lastly, just wrap the tape around the rest of the egg and down the spoon handles to cover completely. Once the end of the tape is secure, you are ready to make music.

Helping Kids Deal With
HOO’s parenting
Worrying Children of all ages experience worry or anxiety occasionally. However, what kids worry about changes as they grow and mature. Here are some tips for helping your child deal with worry at different ages and stages of development.
Toddlers The toddler years are notorious for a type of worry called separation anxiety. Your toddler may become clingy and cry when you leave her with a babysitter or at day care. Don’t try to sneak away, as this will only intensity your toddler’s worry. Instead, give her time to become familiar with the person who will be caring for her before leaving her. Also, establishing a good-bye routine helps, as your toddler will feel reassured by the familiarity of the sequence of events.
Preschoolers Preschoolers have very active imaginations but lack the life experiences to discern if the situation they are concerned with is even realistic. They are also starting to venture out
and encounter many new and unfamiliar real world situations, like attending ballet for the first time. It is tempting to help your child by saying “You will be fine, that is nothing to worry about”. However, trying to simply dismiss her worry may just cause her to focus on it even more, in an effort to prove to you that it is valid. Instead, acknowledge her worries and provide her with any information that may help ease them. For example, if she is worried after having a nightmare about a monster in her closet, explain that what is in dreams is not real and search the closet to show her there is no monster present. When it comes to more realistic worries, like attending the first day of preschool, providing her with information about what to expect is an essential step in helping her to cope with them.
School Age Children At this stage, your child’s responsibilities become more complex and so do her worries. Though it is tempting to intervene and ‘fix’ situations that are causing your child to worry, this is not the approach to take. Your child needs to begin to learn how to manage stress and fears in a healthy manner. To teach her the coping skills she needs, first listen to her describe her worries. Then help her discern the likelihood of these concerns actually becoming a reality. If the fear is realistic, then ask your child what she would do if it, in fact, did occur. Also, let her know she has your support to help her make it through such a situation. Knowing she has a solution in place for the situation she is worried about will be a source of reassurance for your child. She will feel enabled to take on the situations that cause her worry instead of avoiding them.

HOO’s HUNGRY
sugar cookie
fruit tacos
These shells are easy to make and are fun and festive for any occassion. Even picky eaters will find it hard to resist these sweet little bites.
DIRECTIONS Bake the sugar cookies as normal, but remove them from the oven about a minute before you normally would. As soon as you take the cookies out of the oven, remove them from their baking sheet and place them over a rounded surface (I used a paper towel tube). If you wait too long, the cookies will not be soft enough to curve… but take care to ensure the cookies don’t break in the middle. Once your rounded cookies fully cool, place frosting on the insides and top with diced fruit.
Ingredients • Sugar cookie dough • Frosting (any flavor) • Diced fruit (We used kiwi, strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries)

How to Pick a Summer Camp
If you attended summer camp as a child, you may have treasured memories of campfires and spending time learning outdoor activities with new friends. Today, there are so many choices when it comes to summer camps, you may be wondering how to determine which one is right for your child and if your child is even ready to spend time away from you at camp.
Here is what to consider when deciding what sort of camp should be on your child's summer agenda: What age is your child? A child that is pre-k or kindergarten age would probably enjoy starting out at a 1/2 day camp. This will help them get used to being away from home. Day camp is a good in-between transition step for kids ages 6 to 11 years. Signing them up for a week-long day camp will get them used to spending time away from home in an unfamiliar environment, make new friends, and work together as part of a community. Most kids are mature enough by age 12 to defeat the initial feelings of homesickness and enjoy overnight camp. In any case, try to ensure you select a camp where there are plenty of other kids their age. What kind of experience does your child have being away from home? If your tween or teen has never spent time overnight a good distance away from home and seems anxious about it, you may want to select an overnight camp close to home as a transition step. Also, letting your child practice spending the night at some place familiar but a good distance away, like grandma’s house, will help prepare them for overnight camp. Does the camp match your child’s interests? These days, there are both day camps and overnight camps to match almost any special area of interest. Consider your child’s personality when you are selecting a camp. For an adventurous child, an
outdoor camp with plenty of outdoor activities would be perfect. A child that loves science may enjoy a technology camp. If your child likes being challenged to learn new skills, a less specialized camp that covers many different skills, from crafting to canoeing, may be right for them. Is the camp accredited and the staff welltrained? Look on the American Camp Association website to see if the camp you are interested in meets all the standards required for certification by this organization. Check to ensure the counselors receive adequate training and that the counselor-to-camper ratio is appropriate for the age range of the campers. How do I find the right camp for my special needs child? There are camps specifically for special needs children. If your child wants to attend a mainstream camp with their friends, that may be possible. According to the experts, if your special needs child is able to attend school in a mainstream classroom, most camps should be able to make appropriate accommodations for them. Interview the camp directors to see what kind of experience they have with special needs children. You will also need to ask about the qualifications of the medical staff and how medications are handled.

HOO’s tips
Car Care Tips It is almost time for summer and those road trips to the beach. Here are some hot weather car care tips that will keep a break down from interfering with your family's vacation plans:
• Before hitting the road, always check the pressure in your tires to ensure they are inflated to the pressure recommended by the manufacturer. An overinflated tire or underinflated tire could cause loss of control of the highway. Also, check the tread on the tires to see if the tires need to be replaced. • Check the oil. Change the oil and the oil filter if the oil is dirty. If the oil is clean but the level is low, you could just add some. Oil keeps your engine cool and running smoothly, so don't skip this car maintenance task.
• Take steps to help keep your car's cooling system healthy and prevent overheating. Replace any cracked or worn belts or hoses. If the hoses and belts look good but are over five years old, replace them. Also, check the coolant level and have the radiator serviced if your think you have a coolant leak. • Keep your family safe by having your brakes inspected and, if needed, serviced. The brake linings wear down over time, and need to be replaced to keep the brakes working properly.
• Keep your car's battery terminals clean to ensure the best performance. Have the auto shop inspect your battery if it seems to have trouble holding a charge. If it turns out you need a new battery, ask for assistance selecting the correct one for your car. • Have the air conditioning system checked to make sure it has enough refrigerant and is hot weather ready. The air conditioning systems on modern cars are complex, so it is best to have any maintenance done by a professional.

reluctant Finish Strong readers For students, teachers and parents alike, the last weeks of school can be both exciting and challenging. Students are looking forward to the summer break and, as a result, their interest in schoolwork wanes. So, how do you ensure your child is ready to tackle the next grade? l You can help your children review by asking them to show you what they’ve learned or by working through homework problems together. l Schedule a last meeting or discussion with your child’s teacher. Identify successes and challenges. l Help your child stay motivated about school so he gains the full benefit of his final days in the classroom by putting a reward system in place.
l Have a conversation every day about school. l Know what the next grade level will bring. Speak
to your child’s current teacher or a teacher in the next grade about the upcoming curriculum. l Ask about new subjects and changes in focus. For example, in 4th grade, students usually begin to “read to learn” rather than “learn to read.” If your 3rd grade student is struggling with her reading, this summer would be a good time to focus on improving reading skills. l If the next year will mean a change in schools, such as entering middle school or high school, take advantage of orientation sessions where you and your child can learn more about the new school.
