HOO’s PARENTING

Protecting

your TweeN

Online

Teenagers today enjoy using online social networking sites like Facebook, SnapChat, YikYak, Instagram and more to interact with their friends. If your teen wishes to use a social networking site, here are some precautions you can take to keep your teen safe from the dangers that lurk online.

•First, become familiar with the social networking site and take the time to learn about the privacy settings and terminology. The best way to do this is to join it yourself and set up an account.

• Let your teen know he should choose his online friends carefully and never friend someone he does not know well. If you friend your teen, you will be able to monitor who he is friends with and what they are discussing.

• Next, talk with your teen about protecting private information. Facebook accounts for users between the ages of 13-17 years have privacy measures in place, so let your teen know to not lie about age when setting up his profile. Teens should never post their complete birthdate or their address. Review the privacy settings on your teen’s account often to make sure they are up to date.

• Set rules and boundaries for the social networking site usage. Remind him that once he posts something online, it is there forever, for his future employer and future spouse to see. If one of your teen’s friends is posting abusive messages on his profile, help him report the abuse and block the friend from seeing his profile.

Hoo’s Tips

Take a How to Pick a Tech Summer Camp Timeout As access to technology increases, families may find they are spending more time on their devices and less time together. Some psychologists worry our growing attachment to technology may result in social isolation. “We’re getting used to a new way of being alone together,” said Sherry Turkle, MIT professor, psychologist and author of “Alone Together: Why We Expect More from Technology and Less from Each Other.” “People want to be with each other, but also elsewhere, connected to all the different places they want to be.” Turkle explores the idea that this constant need for virtual connection is leading to a gap in communication between families, and a new generation of children is unable to actually communicate and relate to their peers or parents. Ready for a Tech Timeout? Tech Timeout encourages families to take a pledge to turn off their digital devices (including TVs, smartphones, video games and computers) for an hour each day for one week and connect with each other in a more meaningful way. The idea is not to eliminate technology, but to create awareness of the dependence on technology, and ultimately improve personal bonds within families.

Easy Ways to Unplug Board Game Bonanza – Break out the cards, puzzles and board games for a night of old-fashioned fun. Get Out and Play – Find a local trail and set out on a hike together. You will have a chance to interact with your surroundings and one another and be active too. Volunteer – Volunteering can help strengthen community connections and avoid a sense of social isolation. Find a cause your family is passionate about and volunteer with a local organization. Cook Together – Dig out your favorite recipes and try cooking as a family. Assign each person a role in meal

preparation. You will not only have plenty of time to interact, your children can pick up some valuable life skills along the way. Take a Tech-free Holiday – Family vacations are a great time to recharge and bond with your kids, but connecting can be tough if you are each plugged into your electronic devices. Fun time together will create memories your children will cherish for years to come. Rediscover Reading – Begin a family reading hour or book club. Starting a discussion about literature will open up communication.

HOO’s CRAFTY

rainy day cosmic suncatchers

These cute little suncatchers are the perfect rainy day activity. They are made with things found around the house and are a great addition to any window or patio.

Directions Start by laying down newspaper to protect your work surface from any stray food coloring or glue. Now, fill your plastic lid with a thick layer of white glue. Make sure to swish it around so that the entire surface is covered. Then, let your little artist add just a couple drops of food coloring onto the glue. Now hand them a toothpick and let them swirl the food coloring through the glue. Try not to go over board or the colors will run together and turn brown. Once they’re done, let them dry overnight. Now simply peel them off the lid, punch a hole in the top, add your string, and they’re ready to hang and be admired!

HOO’s HUNGRY

April Fools' day

cupcake sliders A sweet little April Fools’ Day prank, that pairs well with sugar cookie “fries” and strawberry jam “ketchup” and is sure to cause smiles all around!

DIRECTIONS Bake a batch of vanilla and chocolate cupcakes, without lining the pans. Just spray with non-stick spray. Those will be your “buns” and “meat.” Place your coconut in a bag with a drop or two of green food coloring and shake it up until mixed well. This will be your “lettuce.” Now divide a batch of vanilla frosting, coloring one half yellow, and one half red. This is your “ketchup” and “mustard.” Then, assemble your burgers. To add the sesame seeds, brush a little juice across the top “bun” and sprinkle. Add a frilly toothpick and enjoy!

Ingredients • vanilla cupcakes • chocolate cupcakes • 3/4 cup sweet shredded coconut • red, yellow, green food coloring • 2 cups of white frosting • sesame seeds • orange juice • frilly toothpicks

GROWING A LIL’ GREEN THUMB!

www.FamilyAndKidsDigest.com

29

Gardening is an ideal learning landscape for little ones, Seeing first-hand how seeds germinate, bloom and survive magnifies the marvels found in the plant kingdom. Working with plants also fosters patience and observation as all gardeners must wait and watch for seedlings to emerge and bloom in their own time. The following items encourage kids to get their hands dirty while they discover the rewards that come along with a green thumb.

Grow-A-Maze

(Toysmith)

Grow-A-Maze illustrates in real time a bean sprout’s epic journey to the sun. This container features adjustable inserts so that kids can create a variety of paths for the traveling sprout - from a soil base, through twists and turns, and upward toward the strongest light. The transparent sides not only allow viewing of the plant’s progress through the maze, but also the root action going on below the surface. It’s an ideal device to study plants’ natural tendency to seek out the sun for photosynthesis. The kit includes all the maze components, card covers, and magnifiers (dried beans and soil are not included). Grow-A-Maze is an excellent testament to the enduring spirit of plants as they reach toward the sun!

Medieval Herber

(DuneCraft)

Modeled after the raised rectangular beds that medieval houses would have used for their own herb gardens, the Medieval Herber is a small terrarium that brings back some of the essential plants that families would have used during the Middle Ages to flavor their food or naturally treat small ailments. The kit includes the terrarium container, planting mixture, pebbles, and mixed seeds for eight plant varieties that were popular in the era (thyme, rosemary, basil, fennel, marjoram, etc.). Easy to start, the plants can germinate as quickly as three days after planting. Old school herbs meet modern kitchen garden resources with the Medieval Herber!

Shippon

(Fat Brain Toys)

Irresistibly cute and super-easy to start, Shippons are small ceramic animals with a little backpack planter that is ready to burst into bloom with the simplest of preparation. Simply pack the backpack with soil and some seeds, then hook them over the lip of a mug or cup letting the tail siphon up a steady supply of moisture to foster the germination and blooming of a small plant. Each Shippon animal (Strawberry Cat, Basil Monkey or Clover Dog) comes with its namesake seeds and is ready to start right out of the box. Ideal for the smallest of green thumbs, Shippon Self-watering Animals are the perfect first step for young gardeners!
