EDIBLE EVEBAllS INGREDIENTS •Cookie sheet • Waxed paper • 22 Oreos • 112 C. softened cream cheese •Lifesaver gummy rings • 2 C. white chocolate chips •Microwave safe bowl •Mixing bowl • Toothpicks •Tablespoon

The spooky treats are alittle labor intensive, but so worth it. Not only are they sure cause afew screams, but they are also delicious! 1. Crush the sandwich cookies into fine crumbs using a food processor, or a plastic bag and crush with arolling pin.

8. Pour the white chocolate chips into the bowl and melt them in the microwave according to the package directions.

2. Combine the cookie crumbs and softened cream cheese in a bowl and mix well.

9. Use a toothpick to dip a ball into the melted white chocolate and then set it on the tray, use another toothpick to hold it still while you pull the first one out Immediately set one of the irises on top and gently press it into the depression. Repeat this step with the rest of the cookie balls.

3. Roll tablespoonfuls of cookie mixture into balls (about 1 1/4-inch in diameter) and place on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper. Use your thumb to make a shallow nickel-size depression in the top of each ball. 4. Chill the cookie balls until firm. 5. Now make an iris and pupil for each eyeball. Stretch the centers of the gummies and insert achocolate chip, tip down, in each one.

10. Allow the coating to cool and harden before serving the eyeballs.

M uscular Dystrophy is a group of neuromuscular degenerative disorders which weaken the muscles that control movement. MD is genetic in nature and is progressive, which means it gets worse with time. It is estimated that about 50,000 Americans have been diagnosed with some form of MD and at the present there is no cure. The timing of the onset of symptoms, the severity and type of symptoms, and how fast the disease progresses are factors which help define which type a MD a patient is diagnosed with. Some forms of MD appear during early childhood while others appear in adulthood. Some forms progress rapidly, shortening the patient's life span, and others progress very slowly. What all forms of MD share in common is progressive muscle weakness, due to an anomaly in the genes. MD patients are missing a protein that maintains and builds muscle. The most common type, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, is the most severe and usually appears between the ages of 2 and 5. Children with this type of MD may have trouble sitting, walking, climbing stairs, and trouble breathing, and by age 12 the disease has usually progressed to the point that the patient must use a wheelchair. The muscles in the heart and lungs may also be affected as the disease progresses. There are other forms of MD that also affect the muscles in the pelvis and legs but differ from Duchenne MD in severity and onset. Some types of MD affect mainly the small muscles, like those in the face, neck, and hands. Adoctor may order tests like a muscle biopsy, blood enzyme tests, or genetic tests to help diagnose MD.

The Muscular Dystrophy Association provides families touched by MD with informational resources, help with durable medical equipment, support groups, and opportunities for their child to attend a MDA summer camp at no cost to the family. The MDA summer camp is staffed by trained volunteers and funded by donations. The camp is wheelchair accessible and equipped to meet the needs of the campers. We asked a local MDA family what being able to send their daughter Jade to the local MDA summer camp means to them. Jade's step-dad, says "Summer camp is the only time these kids have to feel normal. They have a rough time in school since they often feel they are being excluded because they are different:' Jade's mom also shares, "We appreciate all the community donations to support summer camp, and even more importantly, for the research to find a cure. When Jade was asked about her favorite part of going to camp, she said, "The horseback riding!" If you know someone in our area who is looking for support for their family member with MD, or those looking for information on how to donate, or those age 16 and up who wish to volunteer for the local MDA summer camp can contact the local MDA office at 1-478-471-9090. Resources: wwww.mda.org

Jade Bush, MDA camp attendee, her mom Malinda Ball and step dad David Ball recently gather at the Cataula Volunteer Fire Department for its MDA Boot Drive.

DECLUTTERVOUR TROUBLE ZONE

• • • • •

• ••

f or busy moms with a full schedule of kids' after school activities, finding time for de-cluttering and organizing can be achallenge. Here are some tips to kick off your pre-holiday cleanup and be guest-ready, Get in the 'zone'. Almost everyone has one of those 'trouble zone' rooms that you would never let visitors see. De-cluttering it may seem too overwhelming but by spending just five minutes aday removing clutter in your worst 'trouble zone'. you will have a clean room by the time the holidays are here. Have a donate box and atrash box, and put 10-15 items in it per session. When you finish with one trouble zone, move to the next Shred all documents that you don't need to keep. For some, the trouble zone could be that pile of schoolwork, bills, and documents on the kitchen counter that you meant to file but never did. Create a color

coded filing system that organizes important documents by type (medical, etc) and spend a few minutes each day filing them. Pay bills online or scan paper bills and shred them. Immediately shred all junk mail. Scan any schoolwork that seems too cute just to throw out Keep just afew special schoolwork items and part with the rest Create an area that is just for homework. Have afile for weekly assignments for each child. This will keep the schoolwork from becoming mixed in with other papers on your counter. Get acraft organizer to keep school supplies in, and give away supplies you know your child does not need anymore. Get your kids involved. Set atimer and have your kids do a'10 minute cleanup' every day, especially if their room is a'trouble zone: Ask them to help you select items for the donate and trash boxes.

3 KEYS TO AHEALTHY MARRIAGE P arenting young children can mean that every minute of your day feels spoken for, and it is all too easy to spend more time snuggling your precious baby than you spend snuggling your husband. Keeping your marriage healthy should be top priority, though, since the wellbeing of children is greatly affected by the quality of their parents' marriage. Here are a few tips to help keep your marriage healthy while navigating the waters of parenthood. Date night. Yes, that date night takes much effort to arrange but it is quite important. Date night is a time to discuss all the interests you share and reconnect. Discussing the kids or household issues is off limits. Can't get out of the house? Put the kids to bed early and have a romantic dinner.

Open and honest communication. This is the only way to truly keep in touch with your spouse'sfeelings. Use "I feel ..." statements rather than "You ..."; and if you have a disagreement, be respectful and reach a compromise. Make a commitment to set aside a few minutes of time to talk with your spouse alone each day, being mindful that compliments and positive comments far outnumber the complaints. Make an effort to stay intimate. Caring for a new baby around the clock can bring your sex drive to almost nothing, but taking the time to at least snuggle for afew minutes each day can help you reconnect with your spouse and keep the flame of romance alive. Don't forget all the simple things you can do to be romantic even if there isn't time to be intimate ....send sweet text messages throughout the day, leave little notes behind, and do thoughtful things for each other.

Hcf90's®Fjf? DO KIDS NEED FIBER? f iber is an essential part of every diet, including your child's. It can prevent constipation and is linked to good heart health and maintaining healthy blood sugar. Recent research suggests that children younger than 9 should get between 19 and 25 grams per day, while tweens and teens should get between 26 and 38 grams per day, about 14 grams per 1000 calories. There are many simple ways to add fiber to your child's diet. Add fresh fruit to breakfast cereal or as a topping on waffles, replace white bread and pasta with whole wheat or whole grain alternatives, or add an extra vegetable at dinner. Be sure to introduce additional fiber slowly and with plenty of water to prevent unwanted side effects like painful bloating while your child's body gets accustomed to the dietary change.

Below is a list of foods that can help you to increase the amount of fiber your child consumes each day. • l/2 cup of beans or legumes= 6 grams offiber • l/2 cup of cooked vegetables= 2 - 4 grams offiber • l/2 cup of chopped fruit= 3 grams offiber • l slice of whole wheat bread= 2 - 4 grams offiber • l/2 cup of whole grain cereal= 5 grams offiber • l/2 cup whole grain pasta= 2 - 4 grams offiber • l/2 cup of cooked brown rice= 2 grams offiber • l/2 cup offresh raspberries= 7 grams offiber

Captain Phillips

Romeo &Juliet Rated PG

****

Shakespeare's timeless tale of love and tragedy gets a makeover in this update starring Douglas Booth as Romeo and Hailee Steinfeld as Juliet. This film tells the familiar story of innocent young lovers snarled up in abitter feud between their families, the Montagues and Capulets. Determined not to let their family stand in the way of true love, Romeo and Juliet run away to wed in secrecy. Alas, happily ever after is not to be. Paul Giamatti, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Stellan Skarsgard co-star in this beautifully romantic production.

Tom Hanks plays Captain Richard Phillips of the U.S. container ship Maersk Alabama, the first American cargo ship to be hijacked in 200 years. In 2009, Somali pirates boarded the ship and held the crew at gunpoint. The film focuses on the relationship between Phillips and his Somali counterpart, Muse (Barkhad Abdi). Directed by Paul Greengrass, from a screenplay by Billy Ray based upon the book, "A Captain'sDuty: Somali Pirates, Navy SEALs, and Dangerous Days at Sea," by Richard Phillips with Stephan Talty.

One day, Grace heads to Los Angeles seeking fame with the help of Frank "Mossy" Mostin (Kevin Pollak). Will the experience cause Grace to reject her faith, or rediscover it?This inspirational film is food for thought for teens thinking about leaving everything behind for fame and fortune.

Now we get to find out with director Alfonso Cuaron's sci-fi space thriller "Gravity:' It makes me not want to be an astronaut (not that I ever would'). The film stars George Clooney and Sandra Bullock as an astronaut and a medical engineer who must work together to survive after an accident leaves them adrift in space.

RE: PLANNING FOR THE START OF"OBAMACARE" In March 2010, President Obama signed the Affordable Healthcare Act into law. Some changes mandated by this new health care reform law are already in effect, with most being implemented by 2014. The details of this law fill a confusing document that is thousands of pages long. We have put together a brief overview of this law to help you understand what this new law means for you and your family. All individuals, with a few exceptions, will be required to purchase ahealth insurance plan by 2014 or will they will have to pay afee that will increase with time. Starting October 1st, you will be able to apply for the health plans available in your state'sHealth Insurance Marketplace. Low income families may qualify to apply for a free or low cost government Medicaid program, and children from families who make too much to qualify for Medicaid may qualify for the government Children's Health Insurance Plan (CHIP). Before shopping for a plan, do some homework first. Find out if your employer will be offering a plan for 2014, determine what your household gross income is, and decide what your budget for monthly premiums will be. Also, there will be different types of insurance plans offered in the Marketplace: HMOs (Health Maintenance Organizations), PPOs (Preferred Provider Organizations), POS (Point of Service), a high deductible plan, and a'catastrophic' care plan. Do some research to determine which type is right for your family. If your are not offered aplan at work, are self employed,

or don't have access to a plan that is affordable, you may qualify for a subsidy on a private insurance plan you purchase in the Health Insurance Marketplace (also called the health care exchange). Once you fill a Marketplace application starting on October 1st, you will be able to find out if you or your children qualify for any of the government plans or if you will need to purchase a private plan. If it turns out you need to purchase aprivate plan, make sure you check to see if you qualify for a subsidy. If you already have an insurance plan at work, you will be able to keep it. Any insurance plan offered by an employer counts as the minimum essential required coverage. You may also be able to shop in the your state's Health Insurance Marketplace for a private health care plan but keep in mind that the plans in the marketplace may cost more. Children under the age of 26 who are not employed may remain on their parents health insurance plan. No one can be denied coverage because of a preexisting condition.

EAT FOR

RE: TOOTH FAIRY REMINDER

99!

Have you forgotten to trade out cash for teeth in the past? Asimple fix is to have your child write a short letter about his dental hygiene habits or how his new teeth are coming in, and tape it on his door to let the tooth fairy know which room is his. This will remind you to make the switch, plus he will be practicing his writing skills.
