TEACHING The ability to address and overcome obstacles, instead of giving up easily or resorting to whining and sulking, is a skill you can teach your child from an early age. Resilient children manage stress better and are less likely to experience anxiety and depression. Here are some ways to help your child improve her resiliency and help her approach challenges with confidence instead of frustration and fear.

Help your child build a support network Have open conversations with your child and let her know you are there to listen when she is experiencing a difficult situation. Model good listening skills and hold any comments or questions until she has a chance to express her thoughts. Offer your child encouragement and let her know she can ask you for help when facing a challenge. Point out that you cannot help her overcome a challenge or manage disappointment if she chooses to sulk instead of asking for help. Also, encourage your child to form strong relationships with friends. Resilient people have a network of resources they know they can turn to when times are tough.

Help your child build confidence When your child sulks or whines when she encounters a disappointment, avoid rushing in to fix the issue for her. Instead, take her aside and ask her to help decide what step to take next. For example, if your child is upset because a friend refuses to share a toy, ask her how she can politely let her friend know she would like a turn. Allowing your child to take the lead when resolving issues builds her confidence. Sometimes your child will encounter obstacles she cannot quickly overcome. In those instances, help your child plan a strategy for overcoming the obstacle, and break the strategy down into small steps. Planning small steps

forward helps make the obstacle less intimidating. When your child successfully bounces back from difficulty, it will increase her confidence. Instead of being paralyzed with frustration when she encounters an obstacle or setback, she will be empowered to take the initiative and seek the resources she needs to resolve the issue.

Teach your kids to recognize and cope with emotions Helping your child identify her emotions and cope with them is an important step towards learning resiliency. Your child needs to recognize the emotion she is feeling in order to create a strategy for addressing it. You could say, ‘You look angry, what is going on?’ when your preschooler is upset and is headed for a session of sulking or whining. Once you have helped your child identify her feelings, coach her on strategies she can use to calm down, such as taking a deep breath or putting herself in a ‘pause mode’ for a few minutes. Explain that you are there to support her as she works through her issue, but you need her to calm down first. One of the best ways to teach a skill is to model it for your kids. Pay attention to how you address your failures and setbacks. Do you keep your emotions in check and persist, even when you feel disappointed? When you do persist and overcome an obstacle, inspire your kids by celebrating your achievement.

HOO’s CRAFTY

ERASER BEAD

BRACLETS

Never again will you be caught needing to make a correction without an eraser! No more crossing out mistakes with scribbled lines. You have an ERASELET!

BEAD DIRECTIONS

SUPPLIES

Preheat your oven according to the clay’s package directions. Pull off chunks of three different colors from the clay package. Smoosh the colors together and knead them to get a swirled pattern going.

• Eraser Clay • Toothpicks • Elastic Cord • Plastic Beads • Plastic Letters • Scissors • Baking Sheet

Roll out the swirled clay and cut into roughly ½ inch sections. Roll one section between your palms to make a circle. Pierce the center of the circle with a toothpick and push the toothpick completely through the bead to make a hole. Place the bead on a baking sheet and repeat steps 5 & 6 to make more beads. When you have made as many beads as you like, bake them according to the package directions in your oven. It usually takes about 20 minutes to bake and harden. Let the beads cool.

BRACELET DIRECTIONS Cut an 8”-10” piece of elastic cording. The length will depend on wrist size. You will want a little extra cord to comfortably tie and knot the final bracelet. String an eraser bead on the cording and follow up with several other colorful beads. Repeat this until you have about 6” of beading. You will want to end the string with the colorful beads, not an eraser bead. When the beading is complete, tie the loose end onto the knotted end. Tie a super tight knot and trim the cording ends.

UPDATE ON SIDS SIDS is the unexplained death of a child under one year of age. About 3,400 cases of SIDS occur each year, and the deaths usually occur in the first six months of life. The American Academy of Pediatrics has published guidelines to help new parents reduce the risk of SIDS, but researchers have not yet identified the exact cause of SIDS. The risk of SIDS is thought to be a combination of factors that affect the way a baby regulates temperature and breathing, such as prematurity, low birth weight and environmental conditions. Since most deaths occur during sleep, many researchers have suspected that infants who have a problem in the part of the brain that controls waking and breathing

may be more at risk for SIDS. This theory is supported by a recent research study performed in Australia that found a possible correlation between low levels of a biomarker called butyrylcholinesterase (BChE) and an increased risk of SIDS. BChE is an enzyme involved in the body’s control over waking from sleep. Further research is needed to collect data on the possible correlation between BChE and SIDS, as the recently published Australian study has several limitations, such as a small sample size. In June 2022, the American Academy of Pediatrics updated safe sleep guidelines for infants that may help prevent SIDS. Infants should always sleep on a flat, level surface such as a crib, portable sleeper or bassinet, approved by the Consumer

77

HOO’s Healthy Product Safety Commission (CPSC) standards for infant sleep products. The sale of infant sleepers that are inclined at a greater angle than 10 degrees has been banned in the United States by the Safe Sleep for Babies Act, which was signed into law in May 2022. Do not allow your infant to sleep in a stroller, car seat or another inclined surface for routine sleep. Move your baby to her crib if she falls asleep in her car seat or stroller. Create a safe sleep area for your infant. There should not be anything else in the crib with your infant. Do not use crib bumpers.

GREAT BACK TO SCHOOL Books By Charmette Perry, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries

HOO’s learning It may still feel like summer, but back-to-school time is here! Going to school for the first time, or returning after a long summer break can produce both excitement and anxiety in parents and youngsters. The Chattahoochee Valley Libraries contain many great books for readers of all levels that will set the stage for a great school year. Here are some new titles to check out:

The Queen of kindergarten

I Love my teacher

It’s clear that young MJ Malone is ready to face the world—and school. Once Mom bestows her with a glittery tiara and dubs her the queen of kindergarten, MJ is determined to fulfill her duties—at school or anywhere.

Teachers are simply the best! The star of I Love Pink! and I Love My Tutu! absolutely loves her teacher! There’s so much to learn, and her teacher makes it fun. So fun that our little pink lover enjoys pretending to be a teacher when she gets home.

by Derrick Barnes

Gibberish by Young Yo

It’s Dat’s first day of school in a new country! To Dat, everything everybody says sounds like gibberish. How is Dat going to make new friends if they can’t understand each other? Luckily there’s a friendly girl in Dat’s class who knows that there are other ways to communicate, besides just talking. Could she help make sense of the gibberish?

by Frances Gilbert

Simon B. Rhymin’ by Dwayne Reed

Eleven-year-old Simon and his friends are disappointed with their school—there’s no AC, only one space for school activities, and the money for extracurricular programs is getting cut. The crew started a petition to grab the attention of the local community and show they deserve to have more opportunities.at their school.

HOO’s HEALTHY An umbilical hernia is a condition that occurs when part of the intestine bulges through an opening in the abdominal muscle. This condition is most common in infants and causes swelling or a bulge to appear near the naval. In infants, this bulge or soft swelling may only be present when the infant cries or strains. Before birth, the umbilical cord passes through a small opening in the abdominal muscle. Shortly after an infant is born, this small opening usually closes. An umbilical hernia can occur if the small opening does not close completely and a portion of the intestine bulges out through the opening that remains in the abdominal wall. Prematurity and low birth weight are two factors that have been identified as increasing the risk of an infant developing an umbilical hernia. Umbilical hernias that occur in infants usually are not painful. Complications from an umbilical hernia are rare in infants but can occur when the intestinal tissue that is protruding through the opening in the abdominal muscle becomes

15

W h a t is : Umbilical Hernia entrapped and cannot retract back into the abdomen. This complication is referred to as an incarcerated hernia. The blood supply to the entrapped tissue is reduced, leading to abdominal pain. In some cases, the blood supply to the entrapped tissue is completely cut off, which may cause tissue death and possibly lead to a life-threatening infection of the abdominal cavity. If you suspect your child has an umbilical hernia and she experiences vomiting, appears to be in pain or there is discoloration, tenderness or swelling in the location of the hernia, seek emergency medical care for her without delay. An umbilical hernia in an infant usually closes on its own within the first two years of life. If the umbilical hernia does not close on its own by about age three or four or if the opening in the abdominal wall is very large, surgery may be required to repair the hernia. Once a hernia is repaired, it is unlikely to reoccur.

HOO’s HELPFUL

Discussing

Traumatic

EVENTS Even though we try to limit the types of news information children are exposed to, information that is not age-appropriate may be shared with them by older siblings or friends. News about traumatic events may cause anxiety and fear. Here are some tips for ensuring that when your kids are exposed to information about traumatic events, they have the resources needed to effectively manage their emotions.

Kids may not always let you know that they have heard the news about a traumatic event. It’s important to ‘check in’ with your child regularly and let them know you are there to listen and discuss. If you are concerned that your child may have heard something, initiate a conversation about it.

If your child has difficulty expressing their feelings, provide them with another way to communicate, such as drawing a picture or writing. Reassure them that it’s normal to feel sad or anxious after hearing traumatic news. Consult your child’s doctor if their anxiety about an event gets worse.

Be factual about the event but limit the details to be age-appropriate. Ask your child questions to see what they may already know about the event and listen carefully. Keep questions simple but specific. You’ll probably find that your child’s imagination has turned the news she heard into something much worse than it actually is.

Traumatic events can cause plenty of negative feelings, such as fear and anger. Help your child cope with them by encouraging them to find something positive to do in response. It may not be possible to directly help the victims of the traumatic event, but you could help select a project they could do for a local charity.

HOO’s HUNGRY

PIZZAPOCKETS

in less than twenty minutes, you can make a fun little lunch or dinner that the kids will love!

DIRECTIONS

Lay the pizza crust on a sheet of parchment paper (or a floured surface) and roll it with a rolling pin to flatten it out. Then cut it once through the middle to make 2 wide rectangles. Then cut those rectangles into equal thirds to make 6 squares. Add a little bit of pizza sauce, some cheese and pepperoni to one half of the squares. I could only fit 2 pepperoni into mine, but you could probably fit more if you cut the pepperoni into quarters. Fold the pizza pockets in half to make triangles, then use a fork to seal the edges. This part is optional, but I brushed the top of each one with a little bit of oil, then I sprinkled on some oregano leaves and more mozzarella cheese. Bake them at 425F for 10-13 minutes until they turn golden brown. Some of the cheese will melt out, but for the most part these homemade pizza pockets kept everything inside. Serve them with your favorite pasta sauce for dipping – preferably something that isn’t very chunky.

Highlight On The beginning of a new school year also marks the opportunity for girls to join Girl Scouts. If your daughter is already a Girl Scout, she’s probably already eagerly anticipating the start of a new year in Girl Scouts with old and new friends and adventures. GSUSA is open to girls from kindergarten right on through high school. They begin as Daisies and eventually become Ambassadors. Along the way, girls enjoy countless experiences in which they acquire proficiency badges, pins, and at the highest level, gold, silver, and bronze awards. More importantly though is the knowledge, skills, and character development these opportunities bring to girls. Field trips are a big part of the activities of Girl Scouts. Field trips can range from visiting a variety of museums, touring a manufacturing plant, or going on a hiking adventure. In high school, Girl Scouts might take trips to another state or even travel abroad. What does Girl Scouts offer? Girl Scouts of the United States of America (GSUSA) began on March 12, 1912 by Juliette Gordon Low. The purpose of the organization is to empower girls and inspire them to make the world a better place by helping girls develop courage, confidence, and character. STEM GSUSA recognizes the importance of science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) to girls’ futures. Therefore, GSUSA has initiatives, partnerships, and sponsorships with several organizations, such as the National Science Foundation (NSF) and NASA as well as corporations including Google, Dell, and AT&T. Through these, girls are provided a variety of opportunities to experience STEM and also to plan for their futures in STEM industries.

Girl Scouts can also earn a variety of badges through STEM activities. These badges include innovation, digital art, financial literacy, science and technology, and naturalist. Environment Developing an appreciation and respect for our environment is another crucial part of being a Girl Scout. Through several programs and activities, girls learn about nature and environmental issues. Girl Scout Camping has also been a long tradition through which girls have the opportunity to experience the great outdoors. There’s also a Girl Scout Ranger Program in which girls can earn a variety of badges by visiting national parks and participating in various activities in conjunction with their visits to the parks. FaithRESOURCES: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6659987/ GSUSA is a secular organization, meaning girls of all faiths as well as of no faith are welcome. In recognizing the importance of faith and spirituality to many girls and their families, Girl Scouts are encouraged to take spiritual journeys through their own religious faith. Through their journey, they can earn the My Promise, My Faith pin. Civic Engagement Because GSUSA aims to help girls develop leadership skills, the organization encourages civic duty. Girl Scouts hold a wide variety of beliefs and values and are encouraged to think for themselves and form their own opinions and ideologies. GSUSA has created a nonpartisan initiative called G.I.R.L. Agenda through which girls are inspired, prepared, and mobilized to create positive change. How to join If your daughter would like to join Girl Scouts, she can find a local troop to join at http://www.girlscouts.org/en/ about-girl-scouts/join.html
