Handwriting THE BENEFITS

OF TEACHING

HOO’s learning

The educational tasks assigned to children have increasingly become digitized and moved to online platforms. This has resulted in many schools deciding not to teach handwriting skills. While it is true that kids need to spend time learning skills vital for keeping up in the digital world, such as how to type by touch, research studies suggest that manual handwriting is valuable because it can help improve learning. A new study published in July by the Norwegian University of Science and Technology found that more of the brain gets stimulated when students manually write compared to when they type on a laptop. Writing is a complex process that involves vision and motor skills in addition to processing the feedback about how the delicate motion of writing feels (kinesthetics).

It 's Beneficial for Students of All Ages

These new results support other studies that found writing manually may improve how well students learn and may increase their creativity. According to these studies, stimulation of multiple areas of the brain while writing may improve letter recognition and reading fluency in beginning readers. For preschoolers learning to recognize letters, handwriting exercises help improve letter recognition when used in conjunction with saying the letter name and discovering how the letter sounds. For older kids who use manual handwriting to write stories and takes notes, there are additional benefits. When taking notes manually, there is not enough time to write down what is being said word-for-word, as can be done when typing notes on a laptop. Instead, it is necessary to process what is being said and then write down the concept being communicated using a few concise words. According to researchers, this additional processing of information helps students understand and retain it better. The depth of the brain stimulation involved in manually handwriting stories may also help increase the creativity of essays and stories.

Help Your Kids Learn to Write

Learning the fine motor skills involved in handwriting can start as early as age 2 ½. Young preschoolers can practice making the shapes involved in printing capital letters, such as vertical lines, horizontal lines and diagonal lines. Once they have mastered making lines, older preschoolers are ready to start practicing more complex shapes, such as circles and triangles, and can begin writing their first letters. Introduce letters one at a time and begin with capital letters that only involve straight lines. Handwriting practice can be tedious and is probably not your child’s favorite task. Break the handwriting practice for the week into small segments and schedule handwriting practice as the first homework task of the day. Help your child hold the pencil properly. By age 3 1/2, preschoolers should be able to use the thumb and forefinger ‘pincer’ grasp to hold a pencil or crayon. Breaking new crayons in half may make it easier for preschoolers to use a pincer grasp. Some students may benefit from using pencil grips that make pencils easier to hold properly. Set up some multi-sensory fun to help your preschooler learn how to properly form letters. Buy or craft some large letters out of different materials for your preschooler to trace with her finger. Mark the ‘start point’ for each letter. To help, draw arrows on the letter to indicate the direction of each stroke involved in forming the letter. Teach your third grader cursive by introducing letters one at a time. Introduce lower-case letters first, then upper-case letters. Print some cursive word tracing worksheets for practice connecting letters. RESOURCES:

HOO’s HUNGRY

CHRISTMAS COOKIE DIP this dip is the perfect holiday appetizer recipe....A little sweet, a little tangy. Courtesy of oldhousetonewhome.net

DIRECTIONS

In a medium bowl, add the cream cheese, yogurt, and butter and then blend together with a hand mixer until light and fluffy. Add in 1/4 cup powdered sugar, flour, and vanilla. Blend again until well incorporated. Taste and add in more powdered sugar if you want a sweeter dip. Fold in the sprinkles with a spatula. Stir very slowly and lightly so you don't melt the sprinkles. You may get streaks of color in your dip! Cover and refrigerate for at least two hours before serving. Note: This dip is on the tangier side due to the use of Greek yogurt. Add more sugar until it tastes as sweet as you prefer.

INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup Greek vanilla yogurt • 3 oz. cream cheese softened

• 3 tbsp. butter softened • 1 tsp. vanilla • 1/4-3/4 cup powdered sugar • 2 tbsp. flour • 1/3 cup red and green sprinkles • Gingerbread cookies

Turn clockwise 1/4 turn. Readjust your grip and turn another 1/4 inch to complete the loop. Repeat until each arm of the wire bead snowflake ornament is complete. Use a section of ribbon or monofilament line to hang your homemade beaded snowflake ornaments.

HOO’s INSPIRED

Healing Heroes on the Water This year, several residents of the Chattahoochee Valley founded a local chapter of Heroes on the Water (HOW), a non-profit organization that offers therapeutic kayak fishing programs for veterans, activity duty members of the military and first responders. The organization’s mission is to help program participants relax and reconnect with themselves. The programs are also open to the participants’ family members. According to Liz Guild, the Community Coordinator for the Chattahoochee Valley HOW chapter, kayak fishing experiences provided by the organization help reduce symptoms of post-traumatic stress and traumatic brain injury. Participants are not required to have any kayaking or fishing experience and accommodations can be made for anyone who needs adaptive equipment. The organization also modifies the outdoor experience according to the needs of the participants. Those who do not wish to kayak can enjoy fishing from the shore.

able to connect with Veterans, First Responders and their families through kayak fishing is a blessing. Seeing their smiles, first catches and peace on their faces says it all.“ She added, “As an Army Mom of two boys… I see the sacrifices that military families make without hesitation, this is the least I can do.” The Chattahoochee Valley HOW chapter is currently planning its first event for the spring of 2021 and is seeking volunteers and donors. Volunteers are not required to have paddling and fishing experience. Members of the community who are unable to volunteer but would like to help can sponsor the Chattahoochee Valley HOW chapter by donating funds. Donations of kayaks and fishing gear for participants to use at chapter events are also being accepted.

When we asked Liz Guild about what inspired her to start a local HOW chapter, she responded, “Being

Fire Safety

Tips @ Home

Every year, lives are lost in residential fires due to homes either not having smoke alarms or having smoke alarms that do not work. Modern homes are filled with synthetic materials that burn faster and hotter than the natural materials found in homes 30 years ago. This makes it even more important that smoke alarms in your home are properly placed and in working order.

the smoke alarm has a 10-year battery. Put fresh batteries in smoke alarms due for a battery change. Test all your home’s smoke alarms by pressing the test button and immediately replace any that are not working. The NFPA recommends testing smoke alarms every month. Calendar reminders for monthly testing and semi-annual battery changes are a good way to track maintenance dates.

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) recommends the placement of smoke alarms in every bedroom and outside of every sleeping area and the placement of at least one smoke alarm on every level of the home, including the basement. Larger homes may need additional smoke alarms. Interconnecting smoke alarms provide an additional level of protection since they all sound if one sounds.

There are two types of smoke sensors used in smoke alarms, photoelectric and ionization. Photoelectric sensors are better at detecting smoldering fires while ionization sensors are better at detecting hot, flaming fires. The NFPA recommends that both types be installed in homes. Smoke alarms with new technology that meets updated Underwriter Laboratories standards, which become mandatory for all newly manufactured smoke alarms starting in June 2021, have both types of sensors and also reduce the number of false alarms triggered by cooking.

Smoke alarms do have a limited lifespan. Check the manufacture date on the smoke alarms in your home. If the date is greater than 10 years ago, the smoke alarm needs to be replaced immediately. According to the NFPA, the batteries in smoke alarms should be replaced every 6 months unless

Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for installing new smoke alarms and hire a licensed electrician to install any new wiring needed.
