Benefits of
Family Gaming By Ryan Gutowski of One Board Family
As a kid, I loved learning new games from my grandmother. Most of the time they were simple card games, but it didn’t change the fact that I was actually learning some pretty important life lessons around that dining room table. Taking time to play games with family has some tremendous benefits that can make more of an impression than we realize. Here are some benefits of gaming with our kids that we’ve seen over the past decade:
Math, Science & Reading Skills Board and card games are excellent at reinforcing some of the skills that our kids are learning in the classroom or in the home school setting. Companies such as Genius Games have made it their mission to educate players while simultaneously creating fun interactions playing modern board games. They have built games around areas of Science and History that are not only fun to play but also have educational value. Taking time to play word games with kids can be a huge benefit to expanding their vocabulary. Classics like Scrabble and Upwords, along with modern games like Bananagrams, Paperback and Composition, are fun and encourage kids to broaden their ELA skills. We’ve regularly encouraged our kids over the years to calculate scores while playing games to help them with their basic math skills. Nowadays there are many resources available for parents who are looking to incorporate board games into homeschool curriculum, a concept that has been called “Gameschooling.”
Team Dynamics Over the past decade, cooperative board games have become widely available with various different themes. Co-op games cover eradicating viruses in the game Pandemic, escaping from a hostile environment
in Forbidden Desert, going on space missions in The Crew, or even reliving a piece of fictional history in Black Orchestra. Cooperative games hold a lot of value when teaching kids how to work as a team and help them realize that what they bring to the table is important to achieving victory. Often we find that this style of game helps if a child has a hard time losing or even when a sibling is a boastful winner. A cooperative game gives you a chance to win or lose as a team and solve a problem as a family unit.
A Return to Analog So many devices and platforms are competing for our attention. Our three teenage kids need a break from their devices just as much as we adults do. Scheduling a game night where the devices are put away can be an excellent break from distractions. Board games offer a return to analog gaming that some of our kids aren’t used to. Growing up in the 80’s meant video and board games were a regular part of my childhood. It’s only in the past 5 years where my focus has returned to board games over video games. There is something tactile to moving tokens, rolling dice and strategizing around the table. Board and card games offer us face time that has become more rare in our digital world. Time with our kids is precious and our family has made so many memories around board and card games. We’ve learned more about our kids and even taught them life lessons using simple cardboard and dice. Instead of having a device blocking our view of one another, plan time around the table to game as a family. See our follow up article next month with tips on starting a family game night.
Ryan Gutowski is the father of three kids living in Columbus, GA. He and his wife Erin started One Board Family in 2016 with the hope of helping families make memories around board games. You can find board game suggestions and features focused on family gaming at www.oneboardfamily.com.

HOO’s HUNGRY
CUPID BITES
these tiny shortbread cookies will supply you with a mouthful of Valentine's Day munchies! By seededatthetable.com.
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F. Butter the bottom and sides of an 8-inch pan, then line with parchment paper, pressing the sides and corners to stick. In a large mixing bowl, beat the butter, sugar and extract at medium speed until creamy, about 1-2 minutes. Add the flour and salt. Mix on low speed until a dough forms. It will be crumbly at first, but keep beating. Stir in the nonpareils until evenly distributed. Transfer the dough to the lined pan and press evenly into the bottom. Use the parchment paper to lift the dough from the pan and transfer to a cutting board. Cut the dough into 1/2-inch square pieces (a pizza cutter works well). Place the squares 1/2-inch apart on an ungreased baking sheet; discard parchment paper. Bake for 13 to 15 minutes, or until bottoms just begin to brown.
INGREDIENTS • 1/2 cup unsalted butter • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 1/4 teaspoon almond or vanilla extract • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour • 1/4 teaspoon salt • 4 teaspoons Valentine-colored nonpareils

Love
Keeping the
www.FamilyAndKidsGA.com
Alive!
Many couples put the care and upkeep of their romantic relationship on hold after the birth of their first child. It can be hard to find time alone when you are parenting young kids. However, romantic relationships need nurturing to last, and keeping the relationship with your partner healthy provides the loving, caring environment kids need. Here are some steps you can take to keep your relationship strong and overcome any additional challenges your relationship might be facing, such as working from home and homeschooling kids.
Keep your relationship evolving and growing
After many years of daily life together, it is easy to become complacent and take the relationship for granted. However, if your relationship is not evolving, you may risk either of you losing interest in the relationship. Refresh your relationship by finding new hobbies and activities to try together. Protect time for these relationship activities by putting it on your calendar and making it a part of your weekly routine. Another effective way to stay connected with your partner is to set goals together. Enjoy supporting each other as you work together to achieve your goals and have fun celebrating when you reach a milestone.
Use active listening to communicate well
When having a discussion with your partner, give your partner a chance to fully express himself before giving your reply. Try to keep a positive attitude while listening. A positive attitude can prevent you from immediately judging what your partner is saying. Ensure you heard your partner’s main points correctly by paraphrasing them and repeating them back. Ask your partner to provide more detail if you are unsure of the point he is trying to make. When you respond, know what you are trying to achieve. For example, your intent might be to share an idea or to propose a compromise to an issue. Having an awareness of what you are trying to achieve with your response helps you
avoid pulling in topics that are irrelevant to the discussion and derailing the conversation. This awareness can also keep you from falling into the trap of continuing to discuss a topic just to prove that you are right, even though the topic is not important. Discussions are not a contest, and when your discussion does end up as a disagreement, your goal should be to either find a compromise or to decide to ‘agree to disagree’ in a friendly manner and let the topic go.
Show gratitude for your partner
Spending so much time together in recent months may have led you to expand your list of negative aspects of your relationship that you would like to discuss with your partner. However, try to limit the discussions you initiate about negative topics to those that are the most crucial. Instead of flooding your partner with negative comments, send plenty of positive messages about what you enjoy about your relationship and what you love about him. When you do need to bring up a carefully selected negative subject, use messages that start with ‘I feel…’ to explain why making a change would benefit your relationship.
Take care of yourself
Taking care of yourself both physically and emotionally is crucial to a successful relationship with your partner. Schedule some time apart from your partner to spend with friends or to have some time to relax and enjoy your favorite hobby. The time spent alone does not have to be extensive. It can be just a few minutes to do your favorite yoga workout in peace or take an undisturbed bath.

HOO’s HEALTHY Many parents assume that half-finished writing assignments are due to a lack of effort but if your child consistently struggles with handwriting and writing assignments, it may be time to have her evaluated by a medical professional for a learning disability called dysgraphia. Dysgraphia is caused by an issue in the nervous system that impairs the ability to permanently remember written words and to recall the process for shaping the letters that make up the word. This ability to store written words in permanent memory is referred to as orthographic coding. The impairment of orthographic coding makes it difficult for a child with dysgraphia to think creatively about what to write at the same time he is writing. Typing words requires orthographic coding and someone with dysgraphia will struggle with typing also. Dysgraphia may appear alone but kids with dysgraphia often also have other learning disabilities, such as dyslexia and ADHD. Symptoms of dysgraphia include: hand gets sore from writing due to a cramped pencil grip; writing is not planned well and not spaced out well on the paper; misspelled words; letters are not formed in a consistent manner and
WHAT IS: DYSGRAPHIA
not spaced well; and holding the paper, wrist or body in an unusual position when writing. There is not an official diagnosis called ‘dysgraphia.’ The condition is referred to by doctors as ‘an impairment in written expression.’ After a pediatrician has eliminated other conditions that may cause difficulty with writing, a licensed psychologist then evaluates your child for dysgraphia. To reach a diagnosis, the psychologist evaluates your child’s writing posture, fine motor skills and observes how well your child turns thoughts into written words. There is not a cure for dysgraphia, but with some help, kids with dysgraphia often can improve their writing skills. Occupational therapy can help improve writing posture and build the fine motor skills necessary for writing. In school, a child with dysgraphia may be eligible for accommodations, such as giving an oral presentation instead of writing an essay. Wise Choices for You & Your Family
@influencersinthewild If you’ve ever wondered how social media influencers (or other people obsessed with their social media feeds) take those perfect pictures, Influencers In The Wild is here to show you. The verified Instagram account exposes them in their natural habitat, sharing the crazy behind-the-scenes moments with the rest of us. It’s silly and hilarious, totally worth a follow.
How you say it Race, class, and gender shape our social identities, and thus who we perceive as “like us” or “not like us.” But one overlooked factor can be even more powerful: the way we speak. As the pioneering psychologist Katherine Kinzler reveals in How You Say It, the way we talk is central to our social identity because our speech largely reflects the voices we heard as children. We can change how we speak to some extent, whether by “code-switching” between dialects or learning a new language; over time, your speech even changes to reflect your evolving social identity and aspirations.
Trending Adults & Crafts
If you’re like us, the love of crafting as kids never died, but now as adults, it takes a lot of prep work, from buying the correct materials to teaching yourself new skills, and some of us just don’t have the time. After a frustrating run to the craft store, Co-Owner Marianna decided to cook a Blue Apron meal. While cooking, she thought, “Why can’t crafting be this easy? All the materials, tools and instructions in one convenient kit...” Adults & Crafts was born with the goal of packaging the fun of crafting and delivering it right to your door. There’s nothing quite like making something with your hands and sharing it with friends and family. What a feeling!
You’re Wrong about The podcast “You’re Wrong About” aims to debunk myths about history-making moments or popular culture figures, be it Princess Diana or the Satanic Panic. Well-researched and thought-provoking, this podcast, hosted by journalists Michael Hobbes and Sarah Marshall, challenges misconceptions and prejudices and digs deep to find the truth about people and events.

Highlight On For 38 years, Feeding the Valley Food Bank has served families in need in the Chattahoochee Valley region. The need for nutritional assistance is not limited to the holiday season and Feeding the Valley Food Bank works year-round to help families in an 18-county region. In the last fiscal year, Feeding the Valley Food Bank distributed over 13 million pounds of food within the organization’s service area. Feeding the Valley Food Bank relies on both food donations and monetary donations to assist those in need. Food donations, that are not in glass containers, can be dropped off at Feeding the Valley Food Bank’s central warehouse at 6744 Flat Rock Road in Midland, GA. Some of the most needed items include canned tuna, canned meats, pasta, peanut butter and evaporated milk. A complete list of the most needed items can be found on the organization’s website at feedingthevalley.com. If you can’t drop off food items, cash donations can be made through their website too.
If you are interested in hosting a food drive at your church or your child’s school, a form to request food drive collection barrels is available on the website. Carleen Frokjer, of Feeding the Valley Food Bank, says, “Since the beginning of the pandemic, we are distributing 52% more food to families – many who have never needed assistance from us before. We live in the wealthiest country in the world with an abundance of food – there is no reason for anyone to be hungry. It is our job to help put food on the tables of families in need. It’s one less burden for them and gives them hope.” The organization collaborates with partner agencies to distribute food throughout the community. Food is also distributed directly to the community from the organization’s warehouse through several programs, including a Mobile Pantry program, a Buddy Pack program that provides food for kids on the weekend and a Kids’ Café program that provides food at afterschool programs.
