To dd le r s e g n e l l a h C
When your toddler reaches 24 months, it may seem like a multitude of challenging behaviors appear all at once. Here are some tips on how to manage frustrating toddler behaviors.
My toddler likes to scream
Toddlers are just learning how to use words to communicate and find it much easier to express both excitement and displeasure by shrieking and screaming. If your toddler is shrieking loudly in public, it can be rather distressing, since not everyone around you may be understanding. If you have a “happy shrieker,’”calmly pick her up and say quietly, “It’s OK to be loud outside but inside, we have to use our quiet voice even when we are happy.” If your toddler is screaming out of displeasure, remember that toddlers are still learning to self-regulate and how to follow rules. Your best bet is to distract your toddler by switching her attention to something else, along with gently reminding her that it is not OK to scream in public.
My toddler screams “Mine!” all the time
When your toddler is interacting with others and keeps saying “Mine! My toy!,” it can be a bit frustrating. This is a sign that your toddler has reached the developmental stage of realizing she is a separate individual and is starting to establish her identity. However, toddlers do not have the ability yet to empathize with others and they have difficulty sharing. To reduce the number of times of your toddler angrily yells “Mine!,”referee their playtime by asking your child what she wants to play with first and then remind her when her time is up to now share it. If your child has a toy that is special to her, it is a good idea to ask before the playdate if she wants to share it and put it out of sight if she does not.
However, do not force your toddler to share by grabbing the toy away from her. If you forcefully take it away, you are sending the message that it is OK to snatch a toy from someone. Instead, find another toy for her playmate to play with, and keep consistently working with your toddler on the concept of sharing at each playdate she attends.
My toddler takes off all her clothes
This could be due to a combination of reasons. Your toddler may be starting to recognize the need to use the potty and is acting upon it. She may also be acting out of discomfort. Maybe her diaper is wet or the fabric of her dress is itchy. Toddlers also sometimes embark on a streaking phase because they enjoy the reaction and attention they get from adults or because they have just learned to dress and undress and want to practice undressing. If your toddler is going around in the nude but will not sit on the potty consistently and has accidents, your best strategy, for now, is to make it more difficult for her to undress. Choose one-piece outfits that zip or button in the back. Put your toddler’s diaper on backward and duct tape it, being careful not to get the tape on your toddler’s skin. If you are working towards potty training, embrace the times that the diaper and clothes come off and require them to go sit on the potty each time…clothes off, means potty on! This may become bothersome for them and will help to reduce streaking. Also try giving your toddler control over her clothes and discuss the boundaries for undressing only in private conditions.

HOO’s HEALTHY Type 2 diabetes is often referred to as “adult onset” diabetes, but pediatric cases have become more common. According to health experts, this rise in pediatric type 2 diabetes may be due to the increase in the number of children who are overweight and do not exercise enough. Type 2 diabetes is a chronic condition that affects the body’s processing of glucose and causes sugar to build up in the blood instead of providing fuel to the body’s cells. Issues with the processing of glucose may either be due to the pancreas not producing enough insulin or the body becoming insulin resistant. The resulting high blood sugar can impact almost every organ in the body. In children, type 2 diabetes may develop slowly, and parents may not notice the symptoms immediately. Symptoms can include increased thirst and urination, blurred vision, increased hunger, and slow healing sores and infections. Insulin resistance may also cause darkened skin around the armpits or neck. Type 2 diabetes is often diagnosed during a routine checkup. Risk factors that may increase a child’s chance of developing type 2 diabetes include being overweight, lack of physical activity, low birth weight, pre-term birth and being born
W H A T IS : TYPE 2 DIABETES to a mother who experienced gestational diabetes during pregnancy. Common complications from type 2 diabetes include high blood pressure, kidney disease, heart disease and eye problems. According to a recent research study, doctors are seeing an increased number of pediatric patients experiencing diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), a less common type 2 diabetes complication. DKA occurs when insulin levels stay at a low level for too long and the body begins to break down fat for energy, leading to an increase of acid in the blood. DKA can develop quickly, over a period of about 24 hours. If left untreated, DKA may lead to coma or even death. Symptoms of DKA include fruitysmelling breath, lethargy, confusion, frequent urination, dehydration, stomach pain, and nausea and vomiting. HOO’s tips
Summer Reading with Wonderbooks
By April Butler, Children’s Librarian, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries Are you looking for a way to keep your child reading and learning all summer long? We have a great solution: Wonderbooks! Wonderbooks are physical books that read out loud to children. There are Wonderbooks for every reader such as picture books, leveled readers, early chapter books, non-fiction, and more! There are two different reading modes to choose from: In Read-Along Mode, the Wonderbook reads the story, and it even signals when it is time to turn the page. After reading, switch to Learning Mode, and the Wonderbook asks questions about the book to target comprehension skills. Professional tip: Discussing what you read reinforces comprehension and improves thinking skills.
How do you find Wonderbooks? Visit any of our Chattahoochee Valley Library branches and look for the gold sticker on the front cover that says, “This is a Wonderbook,” or ask our librarians. You can also place a hold at cvlga.org in the online catalog or by using our free mobile app. If you have any questions, our library staff can walk you through the buttons and tools found on the inside cover. We can also help you place a hold on any of the Wonderbooks titles in the Chattahoochee Valley Libraries system! Additional tip: In addition to books, you can find free downloadable literacy tools on the Wonderbook website, morewonderbook.com. This summer, we hope you will check out our Wonderbooks, and keep your children reading all summer long.

Keep budgeting simple for young kids For preschool-age kids, keeping track of chores, weekly allowance, and expenses does not have to be complex. Create a chore chart that includes the daily tasks your child is responsible for that week. There are many free templates for chore charts online. Use three money jars to store allowance money: one for spending, another for saving and a third for sharing. When your child decides he wants to buy something with his spending money, make sure he is there to watch you use the cash to make the purchase. Also, even though your child is too young to use a debit card himself, when you are out shopping, share with him your debit card receipt to help him understand that the items are being paid for by money in your account.
Find the right tool to teach older kids money management As kids grow, their chore list and spending habits grow with them. Keeping track of chores, allowance payments and your child’s budget in a notebook or computer spreadsheet can feel like a job in itself. This is especially true if your child wants to do a lot of extra chores to earn “extra credit” on his allowance. Using educational apps that are structured to teach kids to manage money and are linked to a debit card can help simplify tracking chores and allowance payments. Some apps may include online money management tutorials. For teens, a financial app can also help manage money made through part-time work and takes away the worry that your child is spending all his earned money instead of saving a portion.
It is never too early to start teaching kids the necessary skills for financial literacy. Kids who understand how to budget know the basics of setting financial goals and creating a spending plan to avoid falling into debt. By teaching these skills at a young age, you are providing kids with the financial literacy they will need to be independent, successful adults.
How debit card apps work Debit card apps are connected to a debit card that is issued to your child. The app has two experiences, one for the child and one for the parent. The apps provide a view of when chores have been completed and of the debit account. Parents can transfer money to the card by setting up automated allowance payments and can make additional payments for extra chores that are completed. The parent side of the app allows oversight of your child’s account. You can view the balance, set limits on spending and change the settings that enable the card to be used at an ATM and online. On the child side of the app, kids set goals for saving and view progress, spend money and see how much they have spent and where. In many apps, kids can also give small amounts of money each week to a charity. If your child loses a card, it can be blocked immediately. The debit account is FDIC insured and cannot be overdrawn. Teens who are ready to learn about investing and trading stocks may be interested in the investing tools that can be added to some apps, such as Greenlight, for an extra fee. Also, some financial institutions, such as Fidelity, offer free brokerage accounts for children of account holders. Some of the paid apps, such as GoHenry and Greenlight, have a free trial, but after it expires, a membership fee is charged. Read the fine details on the list of app costs to determine what services may incur additional fees.

Highlight On GallantFew, Inc., a military support nonprofit based in Dallas/Fort Worth, now has a second home in Columbus, Ga. The nonprofit’s Ranger program moves into the Ranger Outreach Center at Saint Luke United Methodist Church at 1022 2nd Ave. on Monday, July 19, 2021 as part of the center’s grand opening. GallantFew was established in 2010 to assist active duty Army Rangers in their transition to civilian life and support their reintegration into their local communities. As the nonprofit grew, services were expanded to include all active duty military and veterans.
“We are excited to offer our one-on-one Ranger transition and reintegration services in the heart of the Ranger community of Columbus/Fort Benning,” said Ranger program director, MAJ Tony Mayne, USA, Ret. “Every military and veteran situation is unique,” Mayne said. “Over the course of a decade of serving our nation’s heroes, we have found that a one-on-one engagement is the difference maker in a successful transition from the military.”
Keeping to the organization’s Ranger roots, a veteran support specialist position was created to assist Ranger-qualified soldiers and Rangers with service in the 75th Ranger Regiment. The Ranger program specializes in employment assistance, professional networking, and financial literacy.
The ROC grand opening on July 19 begins at 9am with an outdoor celebration and ribbon-cutting followed by an open house. The grand opening kicks off the first day of the 75th Ranger Regiment’s biannual “Ranger Rendezvous”; a week long celebration of the Ranger community culminating with the change of command of the Regiment’s commander on Friday, July 23.
The Ranger program at the Ranger Outreach Center, or “The ROC,” is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. A Ranger Transition Brief open to all local service members occurs every Friday at 3pm ET. Individuals can schedule an appointment or make inquiries at rangers@gallantfew.org.
In addition to GallantFew’s Ranger program, The ROC serves as an incubator for support to the Fort Benning military community. The facility includes the home office for Saint Luke’s military ministry, Cru Military ministry, and offices for veteran entrepreneurs and their spouses.
