Taming Your ” s s o B e l t t “Li

You set expectations for your child but still feel like every instruction you give is resisted and even defied by your child, who enjoys trying to boss you and his siblings. Here are some common reasons kids try to gain power and control, along with some methods to take back your authority over the household. Your child senses a ‘power gap’ due to your family’s routine If there are certain times of the day when your child knows your level of supervision is lessened due to caring for younger siblings, he may decide to assert himself by defying the household rules. This is especially true if your child has a strong, domineering personality and is seeking an opportunity to gain power and control. Your child may even encourage another sibling to also break the rules even though he knows it is wrong. In this case, you must stand up to your child and enforce the consequences of defying your instructions, even if you know he may talk back to you and still refuse to comply. His siblings will not consider you weak if he disrespects you and tells you no. They will instead recognize that their older sibling is the one who is out of line and also will see that you stand firm on the household roles and expectations. If the younger children followed his lead and defied you also, they should also receive the same consequences. Do not make excuses for them because they followed his lead.

While you are working on taking back your authority, it may be necessary to change your routine to decrease the amount of time your child has a reduced level of supervision. For example, you could ask your older child to help with cooking dinner or do his homework in the kitchen where you can see him.

Your child disrespects you, then claims he was not aware of your expectations Even though you have reiterated the consequences of violations of the household rules multiple times, your child may claim that he did not know about the rule or the consequence of breaking it. If you put the household rules and the associated consequences for breaking them in a written contract, your child may understand them better and there will be no question about whether he was informed about your expectations. Make it very clear in the contract what the consequences are for challenging your authority. Ask him to sign it and post it in a visible location as a reminder of the agreement. Positive feedback when you see your child doing the right thing helps encourage him to respect your expectations. Also, when your child does cross the line, observe what is going on before you react. If your child is being bossy and defiant because he is anxious or distressed, include some empathy with your correction. For example, you could say something like ‘I know your tests at school were difficult today, but I need you to clean your room. If you do not, I have to take your phone away.’

Your child finds a power struggle entertaining A child with an ‘alpha’ personality may try to argue with you when you give instructions. He may consider engaging you in a debate entertaining and try to see if he can wear you down to the point where you allow him to get away with defying you. Stand firm and do not negotiate with your child. It is your responsibility as his parent to enforce household rules that protect his safety and well-being.

HOO’s HUNGRY

FROZEN S’MORES

Frozen s’mores are the perfect way to enjoy the flavor of s’mores while cooling off on a hot summer’s day!

DIRECTIONS

Overhang line a 9×13 pan with foil or parchment paper. In mixing bowl, whisk pudding mix and milk until smooth and creamy. Pour into pan evenly. Chill this pudding layer. In mixing bowl, beat together cream cheese and marshmallow cream until smooth. Fold in whipping topping. Spread marshmallow layer over chocolate layer. Cover with foil. Freeze layers about 6 hours, until firm enough to cut through (freezing time will vary depending on how cold your freezer is). Use the foil or parchment paper to remove layers from pan and place on a cutting board. Break 15 graham crackers in half. Slice pudding/marshmallow layers into 15 squares the same size as the graham crackers. If your layers have frozen very hard, you may want to wait 15 minutes before slicing. Sandwich layers in between two graham crackers. Eat right away or store sandwiches in the freezer in an airtight bag or container. If frozen, allow them to rest at room temperature 15-20 minutes before eating for the best texture.

TIPS: Pour the creamer into the cream cheese slowly or in portions, otherwise it will get clumpy no matter how long you beat it.

Overcoming the Formula Shortage The recent shortage of infant formula is very stressful for parents, especially for those who are having to drive for hours searching for the formula their infant needs. We sought advice from Dr. Susan McWhirter of Rivertown Pediatrics for parents who are having difficulty finding infant formula, and she shared these tips with our readers.

What TO DO if you can’t find your infant’s formula: • If you cannot find your infant’s formula in the store, try buying it online from well-known stores and distributors, not from individuals or outside of the US. Also, you can try to buy it directly from the manufacturer. • If your infant is on a specialty formula but you cannot find the one you usually buy, ask her pediatrician for a list of equivalent formulas. • If your child was placed on a specialty formula but is now over 6 months of age, you may be able to switch her to regular formula. Ask her pediatrician to recommend a regular formula. • Infants aged nine months and up can be fed whole milk for up to two weeks as long as there are no allergies. Once your infant reaches 12 months of age, she can be switched from formula to cow’s milk as long as there are no allergies. • If you are on the WIC program and cannot find an approved formula, check with your local WIC office to see if your state is allowing WIC participants to buy alternate brands of formula.

• Try joining support groups on social media that can help locate supplies of formula or help locate shared breast milk. You can also call 211 and seek help from community resources such as food banks that may stock baby formula.

What NOT TO DO if you can’t find your infant’s formula: • Creating your own homemade baby formula is not recommended and could make your baby very sick. Baby formula is regulated by the FDA and is precisely adjusted to the nutritional needs of infants. It is designed to mimic breast milk as closely as possible, and homemade formula may lack essential nutrients. The first year of life is filled with an amazing amount of growth, and going without adequate nutrition could severely impact your child’s development. Also, homemade formula may contain too much water or can contain more salt than a baby’s developing kidneys can process. There is also the risk that homemade formula may be contaminated with bacteria, which could make your infant sick. • Watering down formula can harm your infant. Low sodium and other

electrolyte disorders that result from watering down formula can lead to hospitalization. Watering down the formula also means your infant is not getting enough nutrients. Carefully follow the manufacturer’s label instructions for dosing. • Starting infants under six months of age on solid foods is not recommended. Solid foods may not contain all the essential nutrients that young infants need. If your baby is six months old or older, check with her doctor first to see if she is developmentally ready before introducing solid foods. • Contact your child’s pediatrician if you feel you have tried everything and are concerned you will not be able to feed your infant.

CAN I start

breastfeeding again? If your baby is on formula but you are interested in trying to start breastfeeding again, it will take patience, but it is possible, especially if your baby is under four months of age and you developed a full milk supply in the postpartum period. If you have questions about how to build your supply back, seek assistance from a licensed lactation consultant.

HOO’s HEALTHY Pierre Robin Sequence (PRS) is a condition that causes a series of malformations during fetal development. The first malformation is an underdeveloped lower jaw and small chin, which then leads to the next malformation, a backward displacement of the tongue. In many patients, these first two malformations then lead to a cleft palate. A cleft palate is an opening in the roof of the mouth that occurs when fetal tissue does not fuse. Other symptoms of PRS include: Snoring and airway obstruction due to the tongue being displaced backward; difficulty swallowing and temporary hearing loss. PRS is often diagnosed after birth when the doctor observes the signs and symptoms associated with the sequence of malformations. Signs of PRS sometimes can be detected before birth. If an underdeveloped lower jaw is observed during a routine prenatal ultrasound, your doctor may refer you to a maternal-fetal specialist. If detailed ultrasounds and other tests suggest the possibility of PRS, the doctor may decide to have a neonatologist present during delivery in case your newborn experiences an obstructed airway.

What is: Pierre Robin Sequence

Complications of PRS include hypoxia, difficulty feeding, risk of aspiration and problems with speech due to the cleft palate. In severe cases of PRS, airway obstruction may need to be treated with a surgery called a mandibular extraction to increase the size of the lower jaw. If a cleft palate is present, it is usually corrected with surgery at about 1 or 2 years of age. A baby with PRS may have difficulty taking in enough calories and fail to grow and develop. Breastfeeding is often not successful due to the cleft palate and the position of the tongue. Babies with PRS are often bottle-fed with breast milk or formula using a special nipple. An infant with PRS with severe feeding difficulties may be fed through a nasogastric tube. After a child is treated for PRS, his growth and development should be monitored. Speech therapy may be needed after the surgery for cleft palate and dental development may be affected by the small jaw.

HOO’s CRAFTY

CUTE PATRIOTIC

TIE-DYE SHIRT This flag-inspired shirt is great for Independence Day, family reunions, summer camps, parades, backyard bbqs and fireworks!

DIRECTIONS Begin by soaking the shirt in some warmish water. Then gather in a diagonal from the edge you want to start on. This picture shows starting at the bottom right corner and rolling up to the top left sleeve. Zip tie the first tie about 4 inches or so from the shoulder edge, then every 2 inches until the end. Now the big section by the shoulder/collar is blue. Then alternate RED and leave white for the rest of the sections. Wear gloves and work over plastic on a drying rack. Gently squeeze out the dye in each zip tied section of the shirt. Lay out a garbage bag or plastic tablecloth and then use a baking rack...this will keep the dye from puddling and running together underneath. Wrap it in a grocery bag and place in warm area for 6-8 hours. Then remove from bag and rinse out with warm water. Rinse, ring, rinse, ring, rinse, etc... Then clip off the zip ties carefully. Rinse and ring until the water runs clear. Then throw it in the washing machine with soap and everything. Dry and wear! Great way to sport the stars and stripes!

HOME ALONE? As their kids approach the preteen years and start desiring more independence, many parents wonder how to determine if it is safe to leave kids home alone by themselves. There is no easy answer to this question since discerning if your child is old enough to stay home by himself is determined by multiple factors. Here are some points to consider.

CHECK STATE’S GUIDELINES Very few states have a law that dictates the age it is legal for a child to stay home alone. Most states provide guidelines for determining if kids are old enough and mature enough to stay home alone. For example, in Georgia, a list of guidelines published by DFACS recommends that kids under the age of 9 never be left home without adult supervision and that kids between the ages of 9 – 12 not be left alone without adult supervision for more than 2 hours. Georgia DFACS also recommended that mature kids over the age of 12 who can self-supervise be left home for no more than 12 hours. Kids aged 13 and up who are mature enough may be left by parents in the role of babysitter, according to the Georgia DFACS guidelines.

DEVELOPMENTAL READINESS Kids develop at their own pace and your child is not necessarily ready to stay home alone and watch his siblings just because he is thirteen. There are many factors to consider. Is your child dependable and does he follow your household rules? Will you expect your child to prepare his meal while you are away? Before letting him stay home alone and prepare a meal without you for the first time, ask him to demonstrate using the kitchen to safely prepare a simple meal. Does your child know what to do in an emergency? Does he know his address and how to call 911?

Is there a neighbor that can come and help your child in an emergency? Your child should understand how to contact an adult neighbor for help. Is your child mature enough to stay calm and think clearly in stressful situations? This is especially important if your child will be responsible for watching his siblings. Your child may be ready to supervise himself but may not yet be able to keep his cool when trying to care for a sibling who is defiant and misbehaves.

ADVANCE PREPARATIONS If you feel your tween is mature enough to stay home by himself for a couple of hours, here are some ways you can prepare him for this exciting milestone.

• • •

Post your household rules someplace very visible as a reminder of your expectations. The rules should include chores you expect to be completed before your return and restrictions on the use of electronics. Create a page of emergency information that includes the full name, phone number and address of an adult neighbor that your child can call if he needs help. Role-play different situations your child may encounter when he stays home alone for a few hours, such as calling 911 for an emergency or deciding what to do if a sibling he is watching misbehaves. Your tween should understand your family’s fire safety plan and know how to use first aid supplies. He should know how to lock and unlock the door and understand what to do if a visitor comes to the door.

Summer Snacks

HOO’s FIT

During the summer when you are traveling and away from home or are trying to keep up with a busy activity schedule, it can be challenging to keep meal and snack times consistent. Here are some tips for helping your child make nutritious food choices this summer.

junk food and then having no appetite for the healthy food served at mealtime.

CREATE HEALTHY SUMMER RECIPES WITH FRESH FRUITS AND VEGGIES

It may be difficult to keep mealtimes consistent when you are on the go, but do your best to avoid letting kids skip meals. When your child skips a meal, he may overeat when he does eat next. If you know there will be a delay in serving a meal, plan ahead and serve a healthy snack that keeps your child feeling full until the next meal. Also, involving kids in selecting new recipes and preparing them may help alleviate kids skipping meals due to picky eating.

While it is fine to occasionally serve ice cream, take advantage of the wide variety of fresh summer produce and provide healthy alternatives to sweet treats that kids can enjoy on a daily basis. Combine your child’s favorite fruits, such as peaches and strawberries, with some Greek yogurt and freeze it into a popsicle. Pick some fresh blueberries and create fruit and yogurt smoothies. Turn healthy foods such as fresh fruits, vegetables and cheese into convenient snacks by cutting them into bitesize pieces and storing them in single-serving containers. If your child enjoys pasta, turn a cold pasta salad into a meal by adding protein, such as grilled chicken, and fresh summer vegetables. Keep processed food out of the house as much as possible to prevent your child from filling up on

DON’T LET KIDS GET IN THE HABIT OF SKIPPING MEALS

KEEP YOUR KIDS HYDRATED Start the day off by encouraging your child to stay hydrated. This is important because your child may mistake thirst for hunger and overeat instead of drinking the amount of water he needs to stay properly hydrated in the summer heat. Serving hydrating foods, such as watermelon, can help.

d Perio Talk USE CORRECT TERMS FOR BODY PARTS Use the correct, anatomical names for body parts even with young kids. Using silly names can imply there is something taboo about discussing menstruation and puberty and also may cause confusion. If your young child sees you purchasing tampons or pads and asks what they are for, answer the question in a way that matches your child’s maturity level and is accurate. You could say, ‘Once a month a woman’s body has a period and blood comes out of her vagina. It does not hurt and is the way her body gets ready for a baby. The tampon helps take care of the blood coming from the vagina.’

HOO’s Healthy Talking to your daughter about menstruation should not wait until she reaches puberty. Having factual, age-appropriate discussions early on can help reduce your daughter’s anxiety about her first period and help her realize that what she is experiencing is a normal process.

FIND OUT WHAT YOUR CHILD KNOWS ALREADY It is typical for a girl to experience her first period between the ages of 9 and 12. Well before she starts experiencing her period and the other changes associated with puberty, your child should understand why they are occurring. Avoid a longdrawn-out lecture by asking her first what she knows about periods. She may have heard pieces of information from other kids that may not be correct.

KEY POINTS TO COVER Each month, the uterus prepares for a possible fertilized egg by building up a lining. If an egg is not fertilized that month, hormones produced in the body signal the uterus to shed the lining and the result is a ‘period.’ It is normal for periods to be light or irregular at first. Once they become regular, it is possible to predict them by charting when the last one started on a calendar. When you discuss sex and dating with a child nearing puberty, make sure she understands that once she has her first period, it is possible to get pregnant.

SKINtastic Facts Why does your skin WRINKLE after a long bath? Normally skin is water-resistant, but prolonged immersion in water changes this. The skin has a protective barrier made up of the protein keratin, which helps block out moisture and foreign matter. Extended exposure to water causes the cells in the epidermal layer to absorb water and swell. The enlarged cells cause the skin to pucker and wrinkle. After a few minutes of non-water exposure, water in the skin cells evaporates and the cells return to normal.

Why does scratching an ITCH make it feel better? All itches result for the same reason: local stimuli are irritating the fibrous nerve endings on the upper layer of the skin. The brain interprets these stimuli as itches. Scratching can either remove the stimuli or cause pain in the area of the itch, which neutralizes the itching sensation in the spinal cord.
