TAMING A

CRY BABY If it does not take much to send your preschooler into a crying spell, you are probably becoming weary of attempting to reduce the frequency of these episodes. It may seem like whenever you thought you had an episode resolved, your preschooler enters another tearful meltdown over something else that is not going her way. It can be something as small as a stuffed animal being moved from your child’s preferred position or a sibling refusing to share the last sweet treat in the house. If the frequent crying episodes are also accompanied by screaming, managing them is even more exhausting. Here are some steps you can take to help your child learn to properly express her strong emotions and reduce the number of crying episodes.

Make it easier for your child to express her feelings appropriately. To a preschooler who is still learning to put her feelings into words, it can seem much easier to have a crying episode to bring attention to her displeasure. Your goal is to help your child understand her feelings so that she can correctly label them and then communicate them through words, not a river of tears. Using phrases like ‘You seem very angry that your sister took your snack’ helps your child identify and then use words to describe the strong emotion she is feeling. Over time, your child will learn she can get help with her issue faster by saying ‘I am mad because my snack is gone’ than by sitting on the floor crying and screaming.

Help your child learn to calm down. It is hard for anyone to use reasoning to find a solution to a problem when overcome by strong emotions. Preschool children are just starting to learn to regulate their emotions and your child may need your help to calm down first. Comfort your child with a hug and then, when she is calm, ask her if she wants to talk about the issue that provoked the strong emotions. Help her step through a problem-solving process that addresses the issue. For example, ask her what she thinks she should do first to find her lost toy. Your child will discover that asking for a soothing hug that calms her down and then using her words to ask for help gets results and crying does not.

Use a consistent approach to crying episodes. Teaching your child to properly manage and express strong emotions takes time and practice. It can be annoying when your child resorts back to crying over something very small but do not reward her with attention. Instead, gently remind her that you do not understand crying and screaming and that once she calms down and uses words to tell you how she feels, you will address the issue that has triggered the strong emotions. Reinforce the use of words by praising her when she does successfully keep the strong emotions in check and uses words to express how she feels instead of tears and screaming.

Teach your child perspective. Preschoolers often cry due to frustration over an issue that could simply be resolved by asking for help. Once your child is calm, talk to her about why tears are not the right response to the issue and help her practice asking for help. Read some books written for preschoolers with your child that focus on communicating emotions and asking others for help. Your child needs to understand that if everyone cried instead of asking others for assistance, it would be hard to get problems resolved and successfully complete tasks.

HOO’s HEALTHY Meningitis is a condition in which the membranes of the brain (the meninges) and the fluid in the brain become inflamed. In the United States, most cases are caused by viral infections, but the condition can also be caused by bacterial, fungal and parasitic infections. It can occur at any age and if suspected, should be evaluated right away. If left untreated, bacterial meningitis can lead to permanent brain damage and in some cases may lead to death within a few days.

www.kidsstreeturgentcare.com

KidsStreet Urgent Care Columbus

WMEhNat is: INGITIS

Symptoms of meningitis in adults and kids over the age of two include: sudden high fever, stiffness in the neck, headache that seems different from a usual headache, sensitivity to light, confusion and sometimes rash.

In a case of bacterial meningitis, the bacteria enter the bloodstream and travel to the brain and spinal cord, or the bacteria enter the brain directly due to an ear infection or skull injury. A group of viruses called enteroviruses is usually the cause of a case of viral meningitis in the United States. However, it is possible for other viral infections, such as herpes simplex and West Nile, to lead to viral meningitis. Most of the time, viral meningitis resolves on its own in a couple of weeks. In the United States, it is rare for a fungus or parasite to cause meningitis.

Nausea and vomiting can accompany the headache and the patient may have no appetite or thirst. The signs of meningitis in infants and young toddlers include high fever, nausea and vomiting, stiff neck and body, poor feeding, excessive sleepiness or irritability, difficulty waking from sleep and bulging in the soft spot on top of the baby’s head.

Meningitis is diagnosed using blood cultures and imaging, such as computerized tomography (CT) and MRI. In some cases, a spinal tap is performed to gather cerebral spinal fluid for testing. Bacterial meningitis is treated with the appropriate antibiotics and sometimes with a corticosteroid to reduce brain swelling and the chance of seizures. Viral meningitis is usually treated with bed rest, fluids and OTC pain medications.

Do You Have a Child Diagnosed with Eczema? Ages 2-11 could qualify for a research study in Columbus! Call to Learn More:

HOO’s HEALTHY ITCHING FOR RELIEF? By Sydney Phillips Recruitment Supervisor, Centricity Research

800 Talbotton Road Columbus, GA 31904 CentricityResearch.com

Does your child suffer from eczema? At least 1 in 10 children have eczema (atopic dermatitis), which can cause unbearable itching and skin irritation that can interfere with everyday life, and even make it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. Eczema is the most common skin condition affecting children; it can appear in infants as early as 6 months, but most commonly occurs in children before the age of 5. Its cause is not yet clear, but eczema flares usually occur after being exposed to certain “triggers”— things like fragrances, pets, chemicals, outdoor allergens, or certain weather conditions. If your child has been diagnosed with eczema and is between the ages of 2 and 11, they could qualify to participate in a research study here in Columbus, Georgia. Centricity Research, formerly IACT Health, is currently conducting a pediatric eczema study that could be right for your child. There is no cost, insurance, or referrals necessary for your child to be eligible to receive care. Clinical trials provide hope for many, as they can provide you with an alternative form

of care while giving medical researchers valuable information to help come up with better treatments for all people. Participating in a clinical trial allows you to be a part of the advancement of medicine, and gives you access to the best quality of care for your child. In addition, you could be eligible to receive compensation for your time and travel. Centricity Research, dedicated to its mission of revolutionizing research and changing lives, has successfully contributed to helping achieve FDA approvals for more than 90 medications used to treat or control a variety of illnesses. The organization has a tremendous reputation for excellent care, with 98% of research participants willing to participate in a future study, and 96% of those participants also willing to refer their family members or friends.

To find out if your child is eligible to participate in this eczema study, contact the Centricity Research study team at 706-321-0495!

HOO’s CRAFTY

MILK CARTON BIRDHOUSE

Bring nature into focus for the kids with this simple outdoor craft.

DIRECTIONS Rinse the carton, let it dry, then screw cap back on. Paint or spray paint the base color of your carton and let dry. About midway down one side, trace a 2 inch circle (use bottom of spray can as a template) then cut it out as your door. Using craft paints and stickers, have your child decorate their house, let it dry. Place your milk carton on a drop cloth and spray with clear sealer spray to make it water resistant. One inch below the door, cut a small X and insert a twig, half inside and half outside. Hot glue twig into place. Cut a small hole on each side of the top of the carton to run a string through to use as a hanger. Find a branch at least 5 feet off the ground to hang your birdhouse. Poke 8 small holes in the bottom to allow water to drain out. To keep it from blowing in the wind too much, anchor it with small rocks at the bottom of the carton, or add bird seed to make it a feeder instead of a house.

Wise Choices for You & Your Family

DaCadnsBond Too! The bonding that takes place between a newborn and her parents in the first few days and weeks of life is crucial to future development. However, especially if a newborn is breastfed, dads can sometimes feel like their chances for bonding are limited since newborns feed quite frequently. Here are some ways a new dad can get involved in newborn care and have opportunities to feel more connected to his newborn. Make eye contact with your newborn. Making eye contact with your baby helps her learn your face, which is an important part of her forming a bond with you. In the first few days and weeks of life, a newborn memorizes the face of her caregivers and learns to trust them.

Hold your baby about 8 to 12 inches from your face when you look in her eyes. Newborns are nearsighted at first and this will help her see your face clearly. Get involved at feeding time. Even if your newborn is breastfed, you can help at mealtime. Give mom a break and bring the baby to her when it is feeding time. If your newborn is bottle-fed, take turns feeding your baby. Play with your baby and create your unique style of interacting with her. Sing a special song you selected just for her, make funny faces during diaper changes or select a book that you read to her each evening. Some new parents worry that it is possible to ‘spoil’ their baby by holding her too much and giving her too much attention, but studies have shown this to be a myth. Enjoy holding her.

RESOURCES: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5282438/

HOO’s tips Turn a routine task into ‘dad time.’ Take on a certain aspect of your newborn’s care, such as taking her out on a walk each day or taking care of most of the diaper changes. She will learn that she can count on you for that part of her day. Bonding occurs over time, so be patient. However, if you feel you are having difficulty bonding with your baby, speak with your baby’s pediatrician.

HOO’s HUNGRY

SUMMER BERRY CHEESECAKE SALAD

Rich and creamy cheesecake filling is folded into your favorite berries to create the most amazing fruit salad ever!

DIRECTIONS

Prepare berries and lay them on paper towels to dry while you prepare the cheesecake mixture. In a medium tall bowl, using an electric mixer, whip cream cheese until it becomes smooth. It may bind up in the beaters, but continue as is and it will loosen up. With mixer running slowly, add creamer to the cream cheese. Add it about a tablespoon at a time and then mix until it becomes a smooth mixture and all of the creamer has combined into the cream cheese. Continue until all of the creamer has been added. Whip until smooth. Combine berries in a large bowl. Gently fold in cheesecake mixture until completely combined. Chill till ready to serve.

TIPS: Do not pour all of the creamer into the cream cheese at once.

It will get clumpy and no matter how long you beat it, it will stay that way. Trust me on this one. If you have to substitute cream for the creamer, powdered sugar and vanilla would be the best swap; using 1/2 cup heavy cream, 2 tablespoons powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon vanilla extract.
