Help Kids Fight the

Lonliness Monster

The need to continue with social distancing and other health safety precautions this fall could make it more difficult for your kids to reunite with friends after the summer break. Kids who feel disconnected from their group of friends may feel isolated and lonely, especially tweens. Tweens are learning to form relationships that model the peer relationships between adults, and these relationships provide needed support and encouragement.

Helping kids address feelings of loneliness starts at home Keep your relationship with your child strong by spending time together and giving him an opportunity to express his feelings. This means setting aside screen-free time each day with your child. Use this time for a fun activity such as working on a puzzle or doing a craft, and strike up a conversation with your child about how he is doing. If you feel that your child is feeling lonely or upset but does not want to discuss it with you right away, ask him to write a note to you describing his feelings. Ask kids who can’t yet express themselves well in words to draw you a picture. Make simple comments to confirm that you were listening, such as “It sounds like you miss your friend from school. This must be difficult for you.” Your child will know you are there to support him and to help guide him as he tries to find ways to manage his feelings.

Once you understand his feelings of loneliness, teach resiliency Teach kids resiliency by helping them find ways to cope with their feeling of loneliness and stay connected with those they care about.

Virtual playdates help young kids stay connected Even though young kids may enjoy the extra family time at home and are less likely to feel isolated, a young child may feel frustrated he can’t invite his best friend over to play. Team up with the parents of your child’s playmate and schedule a virtual playdate, where the kids play with the same type of toy, such as blocks, or create the same simple craft and share the results. Have fun choosing a theme for your virtual playdate, such as dress up or pretend restaurant.

Teach your kids the art of letter writing Help your kids send a letter or artwork to a relative that they miss seeing. If your kids enjoy writing letters, contact a local nursing home to find out if any of the residents who are in quarantine would enjoy having a pen pal. There will be much excitement when your child finds a letter addressed to him in the mailbox.

Host a Virtual After School Club Keep school-age kids who are too young to video chat by themselves connected to their friends by starting a virtual after school club. Parents of the kids in the virtual club could take turns selecting a different activity for each meeting and facilitating the meeting. Possible activity ideas include a virtual cooking class or a virtual STEM activity.

Help older kids use technology to stay connected safely Older kids and tweens are quite adept at using technology such as video games and video chatting to stay connected with their friends. You may find yourself having to bend the rules on the amount of screen time after school each day to allow your child to connect with friends they miss. However, don’t relax your oversight of online activities. Along with teaching your kids good cyber safety practices, keep an eye on who your child is chatting with and the content of video chats.

Trending MCSD It Takes A Village

Mini Habits: Smaller Habits, Bigger Results

This Facebook group works to connect parents and caregivers of students in the MCSD community with other parents and educators willing to help children achieve while learning virtually. They’re connected with educators, caretakers, tutors and other parents willing to swap schedules and skills to make virtual learning work.

According to the book’s author Stephen Guise, a mini habit is a very small positive behavior that you force yourself to do every day; it’s “too small to fail” nature makes it weightless, deceptively powerful, and a superior habit-building strategy. You will have no choice but to believe in yourself when you’re always moving forward.

Happiness Lab

You might think more money, a better job, or Instagram-worthy vacations would make you happy. You’re dead wrong. In “The Happiness Lab” podcast, Yale professor Dr Laurie Santos will take you through the latest scientific research and share some surprising and inspiring stories that will forever alter the way you think about happiness. She’s changed the lives of thousands of people through her class “Psychology and the Good Life,” and she’ll change yours, too.

GIVE YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM A BOOST!

HOO’s Healthy

Alexa Jones, PA-C, Preferred Medical Group

One of the questions I am frequently asked during the pandemic is “What can I do to boost my immune system?” There are several fad dietary supplements circulating the internet right now, but most of these have not been proven and approved for their advertised uses. Here are a few inexpensive things that you can do to keep your immune system strong. IMPROVE YOUR DIET.

Nutrition is a very important part of staying healthy! Every cell in the human body – immune cells included – functions best when it is properly fueled. Eating a diverse, healthy, anti-inflammatory diet helps the immune system function optimally. Eating white meats like fish and chicken, increasing fruit and vegetable intake, and reducing carbohydrate and sugar intake can all improve immune function.

EXERCISE REGULARLY.

A regular exercise program has been proven to improve immunity. Studies have shown that having a regular exercise program reduces inflammatory reactions in the body, which allows your immune system to stay strong. Additionally, exercise increases your immune system’s ability to make more immune cells, which allows your body to fight off more infections. Exercising daily for more than 20 minutes at a time can have these beneficial effects on your immune system.

GET ENOUGH SLEEP.

The importance of proper sleep is underestimated. The human body is constantly working, using energy for different functions throughout the day. During sleep is when the body resets and its hormone levels return to normal. Different hormones, like cortisol and adrenaline, control the immune system. Our bodies function best on adequate sleep, which for most individuals is 8-12 hours per night, longer for adolescents and children.

There is no magic pill that will make you immune to every illness. Healthcare professionals recommend following these three points listed in addition to good hygiene practices – including adequate hand washing, wearing masks, and social distancing. Stay healthy, stay safe!

Accurate counts help communities get needed resources m Accurate census results help ensure that schools in the commu-

nity receive the necessary federal funding to support programs like Head Start and school lunch programs. Accurate data, also makes it easier for school administrators to apply for grants that fund additional resources, such as technology for STEM education. m The

amount of federal funding allocated to a community for infrastructure projects, such as improving roads, building schools, and adding hospitals to the local healthcare system, is determined by the demographic data gathered by the US Census. It also helps determine funding for emergency services such as the community’s fire department, as well as the development disaster preparedness plans.

The US Census is a count of every person living in the United States and it only happens every 10 years, as mandated by the Constitution of the United States.

It helps determine how electoral districts are redrawn The population count provided by the US Census helps to determine which electoral districts need to be redrawn based on a loss or gain of population. Also, the number of seats that a state is assigned in the US House of Representatives is determined by the population of the state, therefore helping to ensure your family is properly represented in Congress. If residents are uncounted, their state could then lose seats, leaving voters underrepresented.

businesses decide where to invest, such as identifying potential sites for new stores and restaurants.

It is Online for the first time This year, you can fill out the US Census online, which is especially helpful if you didn’t receive it by mail. Go to 2020census.gov to submit your response or get help with the form. The federal government has hired census takers to follow up with residents who have not yet responded and collect their information. A census taker will have a photo ID badge with a US Department of Commerce watermark. If one visits you, help your community get an accurate count by providing your data to the census taker.

Wise Choices for You & Your Family

THE NEW, OLD WAY Spending more time at home over the past few months was sometimes challenging when the kids tired of each other’s company. On a positive note, there have been some changes in our daily routine that I can say are definitely a move in the right direction. These changes remind me of the past, when parents felt less pressure to fill their child’s schedule with activities and there was more time at home. I have valued being able to spend more time enjoying family meals at home. We have enjoyed being able to try new recipes and having everyone together at the table most evenings. We usually reserve baking for cooler weather, but my daughter has used her time at home to learn how to bake brownies this summer. As an extra bonus, the kids exercised their problem-solving skills and devised a way to work together to complete the increased number of kitchen chores. It was hard at first for the kids to transition to being at home most of the time, but it has been a unique opportunity for them to find creative ways to occupy themselves. My son decided to take on the project of creating flower beds and a path of stepping stones. This was an impressive demonstration of both cre-

HOO’s INSPIRED By Linda Ligon of ‘Family & Kids’ & mom of four

ativity and leadership that, at the same time last year, he would not have had time for. Now that we are home more often, we have time to get outdoors and get some exercise. We have made taking a walk part of our family routine. Also, this year, after several years of not attempting it, we finally had the time to continue the family tradition of planting a garden. My garden does not even come close to the one my grandfather planted every year, but my kids have had fun watching the plants grow from seed and produce fresh vegetables. The beginning of a school year means the start of a new chapter in our family’s story, but one in which the lifestyle changes we have made over the last few months will still play an important part.

SHARING THIS CREATIVE ACTIVITY WITH CHILDREN Months at home confined with kids can be as draining as it can be fun. If your entertainment ideas are dwindling, and you find yourself allowing more and more tv time (no judgment!), it just might be time to incorporate an activity that is both occupying and creatively fulfilling. Pottery is just the activity, YES pottery! Pottery engages the body and mind all at once in an encompassing act of creativity and self-expression. It’s the perfect pastime for getting your young one to express themselves and take part in a ritual that has been around for ages. There are many ways to engage children with pottery, from online classes to visiting a museum to appreciate and learn more about the craft. Below are our top 5 recommendations for getting kids to engage with this long-beloved art form, and bonus: almost all are locally based!

The Columbus Museum

Muddies Subscription

This option allows your children to appreciate pottery in a mess-free way. It’s a great way to introduce them to styles and techniques for free before committing to purchasing materials.

This is the cutest little pottery subscription kit! Local potter Mollie Jenkins has come up with the best boredom buster and creative activity for kids stuck at home with this clay activity. Each month you receive a new box with a unique project and detailed instructions. You then send your finished product back with the attached return shipping label. The next month, you receive your new project box along with your previous project all shiny and finished at no extra charge! It’s something for your little ones to look forward to month after month.

Bare Ware Pottery A great local spot for an afternoon of pottery. Their model is simple: Pick out the piece of pottery you’d like to paint, choose your paint colors and brushes, leave your work of art for glazing and firing, and then come pick up your finished piece of pottery. If you’re not getting out and about just yet, they offer “pottery to go.” All you have to do is pick up the supplies from their location, then simply return the pieces to them for glazing and firing. barewarepottery.com 706-571-0507
