HOO’s PARENTING

SLEEP MISTAKES Newborns sleep a lot and eat about every 2-4 hours, so there is no set schedule to their day. Around the age of 4 months, your baby has matured enough to be put on a sleep schedule that will keep naps and bed time more consistent. Here are some common sleep mistakes that you will want to avoid while you are transitioning them to a sleep schedule. Once your baby is four months old, they are ready to be put in a crib, while awake. Create a bedtime routine, like taking a bath and putting pajamas on, they will associate this with 'it's time to sleep'. It may seem easier to rock your baby to sleep, but you don't want to have to rock them back to sleep every time they wakes during the night.

Your baby may not fall asleep right away or may fuss after waking during night. Once your baby is over 4 months old, wait a few minutes to see if they will asleep on their own before picking her up. Around 9 months, babies may figure out that fussing can earn them extra play time with mom. Go and check on her but resist the temptation to let her stay up. Running errands may seem more peaceful when your baby is napping, but letting her snooze in the stroller at odd times of the day can mess up her sleep schedule. Also, she may get so used to napping on the go that she won't fall asleep unless she is in her stroller. Work your errands around your baby's nap schedule so that she is mostly sleeping in her crib.

Similar bracelets sell for upwards of $60 at local boutiques. But, this DIY gives you boutique-chic on a t-shirt budget. And you get to pick your own colors!

supplies

Directions

Cotton or Jersey t-shirt material l 1 yard of rattail cord per bracelet l Magnets l Hot or tacky glue

Anchor the top with a bobby pin or rubber band, separate into 3 strands, and start braiding.

l

Cut the shirt into 3 strips roughly 1-inch wide and about 12 inches long. And cut the rattail cord into 3 10-inch pieces.

When you get to the end of the braid, snip the ends, bunch all of the pieces together, and glue on the magnet. Then repeat on the other side, making sure to measure your bracelet to fit. Cut two little pieces of t-shirt to cover over the magnet ends. Fold the fabric around the magnets and glue it to itself.

Hoo’s Tips

How to Teach

Every parent wishes to have the respect of their child and wants their child to respect the household’s rules. You will need to do some work in order to earn this respect. It is not something you can force upon your children, once your child respects you, they will be more likely to respect your rules.

Set a good example

Children are more observant than most people are aware of. Your children watch carefully how you interact with other adults and instinctively notice how you interact with them. Children learn by environmental stimuli and learned behaviors are often set forth by their parents.

Discuss the rules

Make sure you and your spouse are on the same page, and then calmly discuss the situation with your child. Keep the rules realistic and clearly defined. Be careful to pick your battles wisely. Consistently follow through with the consequences you have set for rule violations.

Discuss good manners

Correct any rude, disrespectful behavior displayed by your child in social situations right away. This sends a consistent message that disrespecting someone else is never acceptable. Explain that by respecting someone, you are showing kindness towards them.

Hoo’s Tips Managing money is an important life skill and it is never too early to introduce smart money management concepts to your kids. Here are some tips to get your kids started:

1.

Introduce your preschooler to the value of money by playing money identification games. Try games like ‘pretend store’, where your preschooler identifies the right coin amount needed to make a ‘purchase’. Coins are a choking hazard for very young children, so printing out play money with pictures of the different coins on it may be a good idea.

2.

Most kids are ready for the responsibility of an allowance by age 6. It is not a good idea to tie their allowance to chores. Instead, install a good work ethic in your child by teaching them that doing chores is part of their daily expectations, and praise them for contributing to the family when they do a good job. If your child wants to earn extra money, you could make an exception to this and pay them for completing a task that is outside his regular chore list.

3.

Once your child receives an allowance, create a place for them to keep their money. Teach them to budget and save by using a see-through container that is divided into three parts labeled ‘Live’, ‘Save’, and ‘Give’. The ‘Live’ section holds money for purchases, ‘Save’ is for collecting money for a savings account. The ‘Give’ section is for collecting money to donate to a charity. Using a see-through container allows your child to see their progress.

Car Seat Laws

In Georgia, there are child passenger safety laws. These measures need to be taken for children from birth to age 8 to ensure they stay safe when travelling in a motor vehicle. Here is an overview:

• The law requires children under the age of 8 to be properly secured in a car seat that is appropriate for their height and weight when riding in cars, vans and pickup trucks. The car seat must meet all US Federal standards and be properly installed, so be careful to check before purchasing. Kids in this age range must ride in the back seat. • Secure your child under the age of four in the harness of a rear-facing car seat. An infant under the age of 12 months must always be in a rear-facing seat. The 3-in-1 or conversion seats are a good purchase, since they can be used both as a rear-facing seat and a forwardfacing seat. If you have purchased an infant car seat, you will need to move your baby to a conversion or 3-in-1 seat once they reach the maximum height and weight.

• It’s recommended that kids 4-7, ride in the harness of a forward-facing seat until they are exceed the maximum height and weight. Once the forward-facing seat with a harness is outgrown, move your child to a booster seat. • The law permits children 8 and up, and children under the age of 8, whose height is over 4’9” to ride without a booster seat in the seat belt of a car. However, don’t move your child out of a booster until the shoulder and lap belts in the car fit properly. The lap belt should cross the upper thighs, not the stomach. The shoulder belt should cross the shoulder and not contact the neck or face. Kids 12 years and under should always ride in the back of the car. • Remind tweens and teens that they must wear their seat belt. It’s the law in Georgia.

HOO’s HEALTHY

Exercise Induced Asthma Does your child seem to have a hard time catching their breath when they exercise or play hard? If so, he may not just be out of shape. He may have a condition called exercise-induced asthma. Exercise-induced asthma is also called exerciseinduced bronchoconstriction (EIB). Some kids with exerciseinduced asthma also have an underlying chronic asthma condition. Other kids only experience asthma symptoms when they exercise and are otherwise healthy EIB occurs when the muscle bands around the airways constrict, resulting in a narrowing of the airways.

This narrowing leads to feeling short of breath while exercising and even difficulty breathing normally afterwards. Other symptoms include a feeling of tightness in the chest, wheezing, coughing, and fatigue. The symptoms typically appear within 5 to 20 minutes of starting to exercise. An exact cause for EIB has not been identified but there are certain circumstances that seem to make an attack more likely. When exercising outdoors, an asthma attack may be a reaction to breathing in cold, dry air. For kids with allergies, exercising outside when the pollen count or air pollution level is high can also help trigger this reaction. If your child experiences symptoms of EIB, make an appointment for them to be evaluated by their pediatrician. The doctor may ask your child to perform a breathing test after exercising. A diagnosis of EIB does not mean your child will have to avoid all athletic activities, the doctor may just provide a plan to help manage it. Keep in mind that activities that require short periods of activity, like baseball or gymnastics, are less likely to trigger asthma symptoms than endurance activities like long distance running.

Benefits of Dance

HOO’s PARENTING Has your child seen a dancer on stage or television and he or she wants to dance like that? Is your 5 year old asking to take dance lessons? Maybe you wonder if formal lessons are worth the expense.

By Kristin Barker, Sr. Marketing Manager, Columbus State University, Continuing Education

6 reasons WHY YOU SHOULD start your child in DANCE: 1. EXPOSURE TO A VARIETY OF ACTIVITIES. Parents can be the greatest motivating factor in a decision to take dance. Parents know that exposure to many different activities increases the opportunities for positive experiences for their children. 3. EXERCISE. Dance is an excellent form of exercise. Even better, dancing is fun, and it encourages children to stay healthy and active in an enjoyable way. 3. CARDIOVASCULAR FITNESS. Is raising a heart-healthy child important to you? Dancing is known to build cardiovascular stamina, and is challenging, rewarding and in the long-term, offers excellent body discipline. NOTE: The level of dance required for exercise and cardiovascular fitness is only desirable for kids over the age of 7. Keep reading to discover the most important benefits for a younger child.

4. PHYSICAL COORDINATION & MENTAL ACUITY. This is one of the most important benefits of dance! Young children have some very important jobs to master including the development of physical coordination and mental sharpness. When children begin to connect movement and music, something beautiful happens. Guided movement and other techniques utilized in dance, help even young children learn and develop fine motor skills and apply those skills to other daily activities. 5. FLEXIBILITY, BALANCE, STRENGTH & POSTURE. Additional benefits of dance include the development of flexibility, muscular strength, improved posture and grace. There is no doubt that dancers are graceful and VERY strong. Ballet training is particularly effective in establishing a solid foundation for future activities that require flexibility, balance and strength. 6. LEARNING & PROBLEM SOLVING. Dancing involves all brain functions simultaneously, and research shows that movement plays a crucial role in the learning process. Practicing creative arts and dance allows young children to explore problems and solve them through movement leading them to innovative solutions. Many in the medical field see this as an important key to lifelong success.

If you are seriously considering enrolling a young child in dance classes, be sure to find classes that emphasize creative expression and learning rather than technique. Improvisation, imagination, creativity and musicality are key requirements that will help your young child foster and develop a love of movement to music. Why is this so important? Neurophysiologist, Carla Hannaford, explored the role of the human body and movement in the learning process when she wrote Smart Moves: Why Learning Is Not All in Your Head. Hannaford stated in her book, “Movement, a natural process of life, is now understood to be essential to learning, creative thought, and high level formal reasoning. It is time to consciously bring integrative movement back into every aspect of our lives and realize, as I have, that something this simple and natural can be the source of miracles” (Hannaford 1995, 214).

woman in gold PG-13 | Ok for kids 13+ This is the remarkable true story of one woman’s journey to reclaim her heritage and seek justice for what happened to her family. Sixty years after fleeing Vienna during World War II, a Jewish woman, Maria Altmann (Helen Mirren), embarks on a mission to retrieve family possessions seized by the Nazis, among them Klimt’s famous painting “The Lady in Gold.” Together with her inexperienced but plucky young lawyer, Randy Schoenberg (Ryan Reynolds), their journey takes them to the heart of the Austrian establishment and the U.S. Supreme Court.

monkey kingdom G | Ok for kids 5+ This year’s “Earth Day” movie from Disneynature is “Monkey Kingdom,” throwing a spotlight on a newborn monkey and its mother. Struggling to survive within the competitive social hierarchy of the Temple Troop, a dynamic group of monkeys who live in ancient ruins in the jungles of South Asia, they’re joined by a rich cast of forest characters. Life is grand, food is plentiful, and safety is assured, but only if you’re lucky enough to be born on the higher rungs of the Troop’s social ladder..

the age of adaline PG-13 for a suggestive comment | Ok for kids 13+ After miraculously remaining 29 years old for nearly eight decades, Adaline (Blake Lively) has lived a solitary existence, never allowing herself to get close to anyone who might reveal her secret. But a chance encounter with charismatic philanthropist Ellis Jones (Michiel Huisman) reignites her passion for life and romance. When a weekend with his parents (Harrison Ford, Kathy Baker) threatens to uncover the truth, Adaline makes a decision that will change her life forever.

little boy PG-13 for some thematic elements and violence | Ok for kids 5+ This powerful and moving film set in the 1940s follows a little boy (Jakob Salvati) who’s willing to do whatever it takes to bring his dad home from World War II alive. Directed by Smithsonian Institute Award winning director Alejandro Monteverde, this “lift your spirits” movie highlights themes of faith, hope and love in the face of adversity, and also stars Emily Watson, Tom Wilkinson, and Ben Chaplin. It’s executive produced by Roma Downey and Mark Burnett (“Son of God,” the upcoming NBC series “A.D.,” and Paramount’s remake of “Ben-Hur”).

desert dancer PG-13 for thematic elements, some drug and violence | Ok for kids 13+ Set in Iran, this powerful and unbelievable true story follows the brave ambition of Afshin Ghaffarian (Reece Ritchie). During the volatile climate of the 2009 presidential election, where many cultural freedoms were threatened, Afshin and some friends, including Elaheh (Freida Pinto), risk their lives to form an underground dance company. Through banned online videos, they study timeless legends who cross all cultural divides, including Michael Jackson, Gene Kelly and Rudolf Nureyev, and learn how to embrace their passion for dance and each other.
