HOO’s PARENTING In today’s world, forming romantic relationships and dating are no longer reserved for the high school years. In addition, social media and a trend towards group dates, where pairs of teens go out together, have changed the traditional meaning of dating. It may be tempting to just reject the rather frightening notion of your tween dating and avoid bringing up the topic at all. However, the ages of 10 - 12 are a perfect time to start discussing the topics of love, dating and romantic relationships, even if you do not intending on allowing your tween to date yet. Kids this age still look to their parents for advice and guidance. This is your opportunity to lay a foundation of values, rules, and boundaries that can help lead to building healthy relationships in the later teen years and into adulthood. Start the conversation with your tween by asking questions. Many parents don’t realize their tween has feelings for anyone because the exclusive romantic relationship has been mostly a result of communicating through social media. If you see signs in social media that your tween is becoming romantically involved, use the opportunity to ask her about the relationship. If your child does not seem to have a romantic interest in anyone, start a discussion by saying like ‘I have noticed a lot of discussion about boys among your friends. Is there anyone you are interested in?’ Once you have opened up a dialogue, here are some essential points to cover with your tween.

TWEEN DATING • Ask her about her feelings and be respectful of them. To your tween, the feelings of love are serious business. Your tween wants to discuss her feelings with you and get your guidance on how to handle falling in love. • Set expectations. Lay out the ground rules for your tween about what is appropriate behavior. For example, you might tell your tween she can hold hands but kissing is off limits. Also, let her know you will be monitoring her social media accounts for any inappropriate behavior. Cover the basic rules of healthy relationship building, such as being considerate of the feelings of others. • Rules for group dates. Group dates for tweens should be chaperoned by an adult. Discuss this with her, and let her know that you will have to meet her date first before she is allowed to go out with him. Even if you are not yet allowing your tween to go out on group dates, laying down the household rules early can prevent conflict later.

HOO’s HUNGRY FRUITY & FROSTY

DOLE WHIP I often whip up a double or triple batch of this easy recipe as a healthy frozen treat for my whole family when we’re craving something sweet.

DIRECTIONS Put the banana, pineapple chunks, and coconut milk into your food processor. Blend for 30 seconds or so. It will probably make a lot of noise; frozen pineapple takes some power to chop up! If you’re adding collagen peptides, now is the time to add a scoop or two. Stop and scrape down the sides and blend again for a few more seconds until it’s nice and creamy. Serve immediately. Or if you like it a little firmer, scoop into a container and freeze for 1-2 hours.

INGREDIENTS • 1 banana • 2 cups frozen pineapple chunks • 2-4 Tbsp coconut milk (or almond or cashew milk, whatever you prefer) • Optional: grass-fed collagen peptides, for a creamier taste and added health benefits

HOO’s HEALTHY

WHAT IS:

A genetic condition called Stargart disease is one of the most common causes of macular degeneration in children and teenagers. Macular degeneration is the progressive loss of vision. This genetic condition is not the same as the age-related macular degeneration found in adults. Instead, Stargart disease is caused by the death of photoreceptor cells in the macula, which is the central portion of the retina. The retina consists of a delicate, light sensing tissue and lines the inside wall of the eye. The photoreceptor cells in the retina provide the visual information to the brain. Sharp, central vision for tasks like looking at a computer screen or looking at faces is provided by the macula.

central vision and visit the eye doctor. Stargart disease is easily diagnosed by the characteristic yellow flakes in and around the macula. The yellow flakes are deposits of lipofuscin. Lipofuscin is a normal protein byproduct of cell activity but the genetic mutation that causes Stargart disease interferes with the normal production of this protein, causing it to build up in the macula. Some Stargart patients will also experience a decrease in color perception, since cells responsible for color perception are also located in the macula.

The decreased central vision due to macular degeneration is a defining symptom of Stargart disease, and it can be first noticed during childhood and adolescence. The first symptoms are often a decrease in the ability to see details and recognize shapes. Many patients find out they have Stargart disease when they notice this type of change in

There is not a cure for Stargart disease. It is a recessive genetic trait, which means it is inherited when both parents carry the gene for it. The parents who carry the gene will not have symptoms. The rate at which vision is lost varies, but a study showed that by age 50 almost all patients will have a visual acuity of 20/200 or worse.

Hoo’s Tips

SEPARATION How to Pick a ANXIETY Summer Camp IN BIG KIDS The tears, tantrums, and clingy behavior of toddlers when separating from their parents is a normal part of early childhood development. It can be a distressing stage for parents, but separation anxiety usually diminishes by age 3, as toddlers mature and learn to cope with transitions. However, for some kids, it can make a reappearance in the preschool and school age years.

Big changes in surroundings such as a move, a new sibling, or new school can cause worry and bring back those tearful goodbyes. Your child’s anxiety is normal and there are some steps you can take to help make the daily transitions to school and activities less painful.

• Prepare ahead of time to leave your child in unfamiliar surroundings or with new people. Have a new babysitter come visit with your child before they watch them alone. If possible, have your child visit his new school before the first day. The same goes for new activities, such as dance class. • Have a short, goodbye routine that includes letting your child know about how long you’ll be gone. Don’t get into a long discussion with your child and try not to give in and change your plans if at all possible. Stay calm if your child has a meltdown, and simply remind her you will be back when you promised and everything will be fine. • Talk with your child to see if you can identify any sources of anxiety that may make separation from you more difficult. A sudden onset of separation anxiety when being dropped off at school may indicate something stressful has happened at school and disrupted her routine. Also, evaluate yourself to see if you are stressed. Your child can pick up on your feelings and it may add to her worry. For kids with mild separation anxiety, taking these steps should ease the worry. However, some school aged kids experience such intense separation anxiety that it keeps them from attending school, forming friendships, or even disrupts their sleep. This is referred to as separation anxiety disorder and is a condition that is not a normal part of childhood development. Many kids who experience it feel unsafe in some way. They may be worried about something happening to their parents while they are away. Others may be reacting strongly to a change in their environment, like the loss of a loved one. Talk with your child about her anxiety in an empathetic,

understanding way. Encourage her to share her feelings, to see if you can pinpoint the root cause of her intense fear of spending time away from you. To help your child deal with separation anxiety disorder at school, enlist the help of the school counselor to formulate a plan for the school day. The plan could include accommodations like contact with home when needed or more time for drop-off in the morning. If you feel like, despite your best efforts, you are not able to help ease your child’s separation anxiety symptoms, consult her pediatrician for advice.

These colorful little creations are so fun and easy to make. They can be any animal your child might have in mind! What a great toy for imaginary play!

The next day punch two holes in the front and back, of the bottom of the long tube and run your string for the legs. We let our littles paint their wooden beads and use their own mix or pony beads to create legs and feet.

HOO’s HEALTHY

is miralax really safe for children Constipation is a common problem in kids. It can become a painful process if not treated quickly. Children will sometimes “hold” their poop to avoid the experience, making the situation worse. Pediatricians often prescribe MiraLax for treatment. MiraLax contains PEG 3350, which is not habit-forming and is easy to give to kids because it has no taste or odor. You can mix it in their beverages, and they typically won’t complain. MiraLax is not a natural product. It does not completely clean a colon out, like an enema does, but it works well enough to unclog a child. Over time, constipation can cause other serious health consequences, so it needs to be treated promptly. While the majority of children do fine when given MiraLax, a group of parents have reported dramatic changes in their child’s personality after being given the laxative. A FaceBook page called Parents Against MiraLax (PEG 3350) has been created, and more than 3,500 people have joined to organize and voice concerns about PEG 3350. When the FDA grant was awarded to CHOP in early 2014, the federal agency disclosed that MiraLAX powder contains small amounts of Polyethylene glycol 3350 (PEG 3350), which may under certain conditions degrade into ethylene glycol or diethylene glycol — toxic ingredients found in antifreeze. “The Food and Drug Administration has received a number of reports of adverse events in children taking PEG products,” the FDA said in its grant description. “The Agency has conducted a review that documented a number of reports of neurological and psychiatric events associated with chronic PEG use in children. These pediatric patients received an adult dose of PEG (17 grams) for a duration from a few days to a couple of years.” MiraLAX, manufactured by Bayer, is not recommended for patients under the age of 17, but the FDA concluded that it is often suggested

The

to parents in clinical practice. Bayer has responded in a statement, referencing existing clinical studies confirming the long and short-term safety of PEG 3350 in pediatric patients, though the company acknowledged the product is not labeled for use in the pediatric population. An article in the New York Times, published in 2015, reported that the FDA had raised questions about the safety of an “adult laxative routinely given to constipated children,“ sometimes for years. The article also mentions that buried in the FDA’s brief to researchers, it had tested eight batches of MiraLax and found tiny amounts of ethylene glycol (EG) and diethylene glycol (DEG), ingredients in antifreeze, in all of them. The agency said the toxins were impurities resulting from the manufacturing process. Those tests were conducted in 2008, but the results were not disclosed. Jeff Ventura, an F.D.A. spokesman, said batches were tested because “many of the reported adverse events were classic symptoms of ethylene glycol ingestion.” Psychiatric illnesses like those reported in children taking the laxatives have also been observed in cases in which a child took substantial amounts of ethylene glycol. Some children taking MiraLax chronically (over long periods of time) also have developed acidic blood, according to F.D.A. records, which can be a consequence of ingesting EG. MiraLAX primarily is recommended for short-term use up to seven days to relieve constipation. The FDA does not approve chronic use, although many use it regularly or even daily to treat severe issues with digestion. For many children, MiraLax works well as a shortterm laxative. However, parents should discuss the dosage and weigh the pros and cons of giving it to their child with their pediatrician.
