Hoo’s Tips

Discipline for Boys Vs. Girls

When developing a discipline plan for your child, it is important to remember that every child is unique and what worked for well for another child may not be ideal for another. This is especially true if you have both boys and girls in your household. Research into the development of how a boy's brain vs. a girl's brain develops have revealed that there is a difference in both brain structure and brain chemistry. Every child develops at his own pace and has unique strengths

and weaknesses, but the scientists found that in general, the part of the brain responsible for speech and vocabulary develop later in male than in female brains. This means girls tend to develop the ability to verbalize their feelings and ideas sooner than boys do. Also, the differences in brain chemistry cause the male brain to be more focused on physical activity and problem-solving and less on empathy and expressing feelings.

If you have both boys and girls, it is important to be consistent with enforcing your house rules. For example, if your son violates the 'no wrestling inside' rule and breaks something, his behavior should not just be written off as 'boy behavior' and the consequence not enforced. Girls and boys should be held to the same standard. However, when you are enforcing the consequences, here are a few things to remember:

Girls may be more attuned to verbal explanations of what they did wrong and be able to explain why they did it better than boys. Boys may need some help connecting their words and feelings when you are discussing their infraction.

Both boys and girls have their episodes of aggressive defiance and screaming ‘No!’ when they decide to put on a public show in an attempt to get their way. If your son is having a meltdown and is taking it out by kicking and hitting, first get the physical aggression under control. Putting him in time out to calm down is a good start. When he is ready to have a conversation, ask him questions that will encourage him to express why he became so frustrated. Since girls tend to be better at verbalizing emotions, reason with them

with a comment like 'If you calm down and stop screaming, I will listen to why you are so upset and did not want to do what I asked.'

When explaining what path would be better in the future, boys may tune you out if you continue on too long. Be factual and involve them in the problemsolving. For example, “If you share and let John play, the game will be more interesting and everyone will enjoy it.” When speaking with girls, use empathy to enable them to understand why their choice was not the best. An explanation like, “It will make Beth happy if you share,” is a good way to start your discussion.

If it seems like your boys are constantly crossing the line when it comes to rules like 'no wrestling in the living room', part of your discipline plan should include ensuring there are alternate, constructive ways to expend aggressive energy, such as organized sports or just some free play time outside.

KIDS IN THE

Garden

We are in a day and an age where gardening seems to be getting scarce. Of course, many parents and their children live in suburbs or big cities where it’s hard to grow a garden. Hoeing, tilling, and planting seems to associate more to the past. You imagine a plow and a tiresome

mule toiling to reap a field of fruitful labor. Farmers gained a harvest that benefitted their bellies and income. Children today can learn the same benefits. Unwrinkled hands can learn the same hard work and dedication it takes to eat, feel, and look upon their accomplishment.

HARD WORK – When gardening, children have to put in hard work in order to retrieve their goal of eating a carrot they are planting or watch a rose come into full bloom. Some tools are required to plant vegetables or flowers. Using certain gardening tools, such as a hoe or hand trowel, will enable children to use their little muscles. They will be more disciplined and a work ethic will start to form for later years.

HOO’s HEALTHY

Keeping Your Brain Power

The brain is the body’s most complex organ. It’s also the most important one. That’s why keeping it healthy is critical, especially as you age. Every day, scientists are discovering how closely our minds and bodies are connected. As it turns out, the things that you do to keep your body and heart healthy may also be good for your brain. Get Moving Physical activity is good for your health at every age. Studies show being active is associated with a lower risk of brain issues. Whether it’s nightly walks, playing with the kids or taking your favorite yoga class, find an activity that meets your needs and gets your heart pumping for at least 30 minutes every day. Eat to Thrive The antioxidants in nutrientdense foods like berries, broccoli and legumes, including some fats such as olive oil, may lower some risks to your brain. Try eating a healthy, low-fat, low-cholesterol diet with lots of vitamin-rich fruits and vegetables, as well as whole grains such as oatmeal and brown rice. Know Your Blood Pressure High blood pressure can have serious effects on your brain health. If your blood pressure is high, get it under control. It may help reduce some risks to your brain. Get a Good Night’s Sleep Poor sleep, or inadequate sleep, due to issues such as

insomnia or sleep apnea, doesn’t just leave you feeling tired. It can have serious physical effects and can impact memory and thinking, too. Seven to eight hours is a good night’s rest.

Discover a New Talent When you learn new things, you engage your brain which is beneficial and fun. Try something you haven’t done before – learning a new language, ballroom dancing or carpentry, for example. You can even try the many brain exercise apps now available. Stay Connected Science has shown that regular engagement in social activities can help reduce some risks to your brain. Stay connected and invite family or friends over for a healthy meal, go on a hike together or just hang out. Talk to Your Doctor As you age, some changes in brain function, including short-term memory, happen more frequently than when you were younger. If you have questions or are concerned, ask your doctor at your next appointment.

HOO knew?

Working Woodpeckers Woodpeckers are best known for tapping on tree trunks to find insects, but did you know some species drum on trees as a way of communicating with other woodpeckers or as part of their courtship behavior? Like any other “woodworkers,” woodpeckers use a crowbar and chisel. They use their beak to pry (crowbar) and chip (chisel) away the bark that covers insect burrows. Then they insert their very long tongue - up to four inches – into the burrow. The insects stick to the barbs and bits of a glue-like substance found on their tongue. Usually bird feet have three toes forward and only one toe facing back, but woodpeckers have two forward and two back. This toe pattern, along with extra stiff tail feathers, gives them the grip and leverage they need to hammer against the bark. Sawdust is always a problem for woodworkers, so they wear masks to protect their lungs. Woodpeckers have their own masks in the form of bristly feathers that cover their nostrils and protect them from inhaling wood particles. Eyes are another thing that needs protection. Woodpeckers have “goggles,” or an extra eyelid that is see-through. Without getting a headache or concussion, woodpeckers can pound on wood at 15 miles per hour, up to 12,000 times a day. Like a helmet, spongy bone surrounds their brain and is more plentiful around the forehead and back of the skull, where it acts as a shock absorber.

“PURR-FECT PROS”

HOO’s PARENTING

Pet or No Pet? To get a pet or to not get a pet…that is the question. Are your children begging you for that cute puppy in the window? Are they sweet talking you into a fluffy kitten? Do not give into those pitiful eyes just yet. Pets do come with a lot of responsibility, but major lessons can be learned when a child takes care of a dog, cat, or even a fish. Before you “paw print” on the dotted line, let’s look at the pros and cons of owning a pet. In the end, there is a lot to think about before purchasing or adopting a pet. Ask the question…will it benefit your children and the family beyond the effort and finances required?

• Pets bring joy to ordinary life • Great companions to the lonely • Teaches responsibility

(feeding, watering, grooming, etc.)

• A nurturing sense develops • Fitness benefits gained if walking/ jogging a dog • Comradery and spirituality grows

“CANARY CONS”

• Dander can cause irritation causing allergies • Evaluate if known allergies already exist • Major provisions required (food, medicine, gear, etc.)

• Veterinarian and regular grooming expenses • Boarding/pet-sitting required if going on a vacation or away for long hours • Shedding associated with some pets FOR TIPS ON PET SHOPPING, CHOOSING A DOG BREED THAT’S RIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY AND MORE, VISIT FAMILYANDKIDSGA.COM/ADOPTING-A-PET

HOO’s PARENTING PARENTING A CHILD WITH Parenting kids with ADHD can be demanding. Kids with ADHD are often impulsive, can be constantly on the move, and lack what is referred to as ‘executive function.’ Executive function is the ability to organize and prioritize tasks, manage time and plan ahead. If your child has ADHD, it can feel like you are fighting a full-scale war against chaos from the minute you get up until the time you go to bed. Here are some tips for coping with the challenges involved in parenting a child with ADHD. l Create structure in your home. Tame the chaos by creating a schedule for your entire family and try to stick to it. Having to abide by a structured schedule for daily tasks and keeping your home very organized can feel frustrating if this is not your personal style. However, modeling good time management and organizing skills is important and actually will help you reduce the amount of stress and frustration

you experience. For example, already having your clothes selected for the week ensures you will not have an issue with preparing for work even if your child gets distracted in the morning and you have to help him stay on task. l Seek support from family and friends. Being attentive to your child with ADHD from the time he wakes up to the time he goes to bed to ensure that he is on task and is safe can be very tiring. Don’t neglect your need to plan some time away from your child to exercise and take care of your own health. l Modify your expectation and don’t expect perfection when it comes to both grades and completing tasks. Did he get the A’s but then have trouble focusing on an assignment and got a C? Did he complete 2 out of 3 tasks? If you can tell he is trying, celebrate his victories and let go of the occasions where he lost his focus.
