HOO’s PARENTING

video game detox At some point, most parents make a decision to allow their kids to join the online world by giving them access to a tablet, computer, or video gaming system. However, some parents are noticing that for their kids, video gaming becomes an obsession. It has long been theorized that video gaming can be addictive, and a recently published scientific study has confirmed it. A brain imaging study found that after playing a video game for about 30 minutes, there were increased levels of the neurotransmitter dopamine in the part of the brain responsible for controlling impulses and regulating actions. Dopamine provides a good feeling when released in the brain. This helps explain why some kids become so addicted to video games that they even lose touch with reality.

HERE ARE SOME STEPS TO TAKE TO PREVENT YOUR CHILD FROM DEVELOPING A FULL BLOWN ADDICTION TO VIDEO GAMES.

1. Don’t introduce gaming to young kids. Wait until they are mature enough to understand the limits you are setting and why. 2. Limit access to video games, smart phones, and tablets and keep them out of your child’s bedroom. 3. Don’t bend the rules on time limits. Have your child step away from the game the minute time is up, no matter where he is in the game. 4. Watch for warning signs, like your child becoming aggressive or depressed when access to the video game is denied, and take action if needed to prevent a full blown addiction.

Detoxing a child strongly addicted to video games can be difficult. The best way to start is by completely taking away the video gaming systems or apps for about 4 to 6 weeks. During this time period, help guide your child towards other activities he may be interested in, such as a new team sport or a youth group where he can socialize with other kids. This will help him see there is life outside gaming and allow him to start to build new friendships.

player online gaming can be especially addictive and may need to stay off-limits. Enforcing your rules can be rather difficult in today’s world, where it seems it is impossible to keep your child separated from electronics in daily life. For this reason, teaching him to regulate himself and live with electronics without falling back into the pattern of excessive gaming is important.

Some parents find their kids are so strongly addicted that despite their best efforts, they cannot separate After the ‘detox’ period, you will need to decide if it is their child from gaming. In such cases, parents should appropriate to let your child return to electronics and ask their child’s doctor for a referral for professional gaming on a limited basis. If so, establish ground rules help. Counseling can help identify issues like depression for using computers and other electronics that could or low self-esteem that may make kids prone to video be used for gaming. Set strict specific time limits for game addiction and provide a treatment plan for the computer use and any gaming you do allow, and use video game addiction that includes resolving those parental controls to block any online gaming you don’t issues. want your child participating in. HOO’s CRAFTY SHRINKY DINK

HANDPRINT KEYCHAINS Thanks to shrink plastic, now we can carry a little piece of our sweet babes with us on the daily with these charming DIY handprint keychains!

DIRECTIONS Paint child’s entire hand, thoroughly, and press firmly onto the plastic. If it’s not perfect print, no worries, wipe it off with alcohol and a napkin, and redo it. Let the paint dry completely. Then, flip the plastic over and add your kiddo’s name, age, or year to the other side with a Sharpie. Or let them write it! For a frosted look, do the print on the rough side and name on the shiny side. Once the print is dry, cut it out and punch a hole in between the middle/ring fingers, then set on your parchment with the paint side up. Preheat oven to 325°F and bake 2-3 minutes until the plastic gets mostly flat again. If it’s still a little wrinkly, quickly flatten with a spatula. Then add your ring and put it on a key chain. Add a coat of clear Mod Podge to help it last!

HOO’s PARENTING

START TEACHING MANNERS

EARLY

Good manners may sound old fashioned but in reality, having a good foundation in basic manners will help your child form loving relationships with others and stand out from the crowd. Good manners means being sensitive to the feelings of those around you and are a learned habit, not an innate skill. You can get started instilling the awareness of the feelings of others as early as toddlerhood. Here are some essential manners you should try to make part of your child’s everyday behavior. PLEASE AND THANK YOU: Saying please and thank you can start as soon as your child is old enough to ask for things. An 18 month old may not comprehend the concept of gratitude, but at least by the time he gains the maturity to understand it, adding ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ to requests has already become a habit. Make ‘please’ and ‘thank you’ the magic words in your household by gently asking your child when he forgets to add ‘please’ to his demand and to tell you ‘thank you’ once it is fulfilled. Also, teach your child to write thank you notes for gifts they receive. KEEP NEGATIVE OR RUDE COMMENTS TO YOURSELF. Teach your kids that no one wants to hear them criticize and complain, especially not in mixed company. Also, make it clear that there is never an excuse for speaking rude comments about someone’s appearance. Teach your child that such harmful comments can hurt the feelings of others and even lead to others feeling bullied. Immediately and firmly address negative comments on a consistent basis, and encourage your kids to offer positive, complimentary comments.

SHARING AND WAITING YOUR TURN: Around age two, toddlers start to learn the concept of taking turns and sharing. When your child is at play dates, encourage him to willingly share toys he has been using for a while and to wait patiently when someone else is playing with the toy he would like to play with next. Quickly step in when you sense the situation is degrading. If your child was the instigator, take him aside and gently remind him that such behavior is not acceptable and you expect him to share. Ask him to apologize to the other child before allowing him to resume play. TABLE MANNERS: Teaching good table manners can start in toddlerhood. Teach your toddler not to throw food and encourage him to try to eat food that is not finger food with a fork. Once your child reaches the age of three, start requiring him to sit at the table for at least 15 to 20 minutes. Show your child how to put his napkin on his lap and how to use it to wipe his mouth. Teach your child how to set the table with the forks, knives and spoons in their proper place. If you model good table manners, you will find kids will follow your lead. HOW TO SPEAK TO OTHERS: Teach your kids not to interrupt when others are talking, except in an emergency. If interrupting a conversation between adults is necessary due to an emergency, teach your kids to say ‘excuse me’ first. Also, teach your kids that when they are spoken to, they should listen until the other person is finished speaking and then reply.

how much water does a baby need? Since most of the country is on its way to the sweltering summer heat and temperatures, you know, the ones well into the upper 90’s and even over 100 degrees. I guess with all things considered, I can understand parents’ concerns about giving their babies water. It seemed like a strange question to me when I first started hearing, “Dr. Sue, how much water does my baby need to drink every day?” I know I am continuing to talk about staying hydrated during the heat wave, but we are really talking about those children and adults who are spending time outdoors, especially when involved in physical activity. I have actually been telling parents with newborns that there is really no reason to take that sweet new baby outside for any length of time. I think it is too hot to enjoy being outside, and an infant doesn’t miss going to the playground like a 2 or 3 year old would. But, when you have young children, you have to get out (or go crazy inside everyday), so everyone just suffers through the heat. But while you’re out and about, remember to take your sunscreen and fluids. And if you are going to head out for an hour or two, do it in the morning or later in the evening if at all possible, trying to avoid the hottest part of the day.

The

So, back to the water and baby question. Infants in the first 6 months are getting fed breast milk or formula which is made up of free water, so therefore a baby is staying hydrated by eating every 2 -3 hours. A baby doesn’t “need” water every day for any particular reason. With that being said, it does not mean that your baby cannot have a bottle of water. This is especially true for a breastfed infant whose mother may have run out for an hour but is coming back to breastfeed. But what if the baby awakens or gets hungry 30 min or so prior to mother getting home. This might be a good time to “stall” by giving the baby a bottle of water, rather than formula. In this case it is fine to use tap water (yes bottled water is not necessary, unless you have a well or something) in a bottle and see if the baby will even take it. Most babies don’t just gulp down 8 ounces of water! If you are out in the heat with an infant, just remember to feed them every 2 – 3 hours and make sure they have nice drool in their mouths and wet diapers. If you are concerned about hydration, take along a bottle of water for both you and your baby. You will probably need it more than your baby!

ON GAS MYTH: Premium gas will help ensure your vehicle performs well and helps protect the engine from damage, even when using premium fuel is not required by the car’s manufacturer. TRUTH: A recently published study found that for vehicles not required to have the higher octane or ‘premium’ gas, using premium gas has little or no benefit. Higher octane gas is able to be compressed more before igniting, helping reduce the possibility that the gas vapor will ignite prematurely before the spark plug fires and cause a ‘knocking’

Properly maintaining your vehicle keeps it performing well and can help you avoid expensive repairs. However, there is one myth that persists about car maintenance that may lead some owners to spend money unnecessarily.

sound. Recently manufactured cars have electronics that monitor any ‘knocking’ and adjust the timing of the firing of the spark plug accordingly to eliminate ‘knocking.’ For this reason, cars designed to work when fueled with regular gas do not experience improved performance when fueled with premium gas. For some vehicles, premium gas is ‘recommended’ by the manufacturer. For these vehicles, using regular gas may cause a slight decrease in acceleration in extreme conditions, such as on a very hot day, or when

the acceleration is very sudden. Under normal driving conditions however, you will probably not notice a difference in how fast you accelerate when using regular gas. However, do be cautious about where you buy your gas. Choose stations that sell gas that meets the ‘Top Tier’ standards governing the amount and quality of detergents added to gasoline. These detergents keep the car’s engine running well by reducing engine deposits. Gas that meets Top Tier standards is not usually available at independent retailers.

Herb Garden

Herbs are low maintenance plants to grow that not only add some spice to your summer dinner table, but also have many health benefits. Herbs grow best when they get at least 4 hours of sun a day and are planted in well-drained soil. The intense afternoon sun can be too much for some herbs, so you may want to place your herb garden where the plants receive their 4 hours of sun from 9 am to 12 pm. Here are some summer herbs that are easy to grow and will make good additions to your summer garden. BASIL: This is a plant that does not require much care, is a good

source of fiber, and has anti-inflammatory properties that help clear skin blemishes. It adds a delicious flavor to soups and pasta dishes. Plant basil seedlings about 12 inches apart and keep plants watered during any dry periods during the hot summer.

ROSEMARY: This herb has a pleasant aroma and loves the sunshine. In your garden, give it about a 3 or 4 foot space to grow. You can cut stems at any time to use in the kitchen. Rosemary contains a compound that researchers have shown to fight cancer cells. In addition, rosemary is often used to season meat, and, in one study, rosemary helped prevent the formation of cancer causing compounds called HCA when added to meat that was being grilled. PARSLEY: This herb is sometimes used just as a garnish but studies have confirmed that it can inhibit breast cancer cell growth, making it a good addition to your daily recipes. THYME: This herb is a delicious addition to almost any dish and has been traditionally used as a remedy for respiratory problems and for antiseptic purposes. Plant seedlings about 9 inches apart. Water enough to keep the soil from being dry but don’t overwater. Thyme has a pleasant aroma and produces pretty white flowers.
