Holiday Shopping Tips Checking newspapers, flyers and emails for holiday savings can turn into a chore. When shopping this holiday season, don’t let the deals and steals overwhelm you. Use these tips to save while keeping a level head:

Get a head start on planning.

Websites such as BFads.net post Black Friday flyers way before Thanksgiving. They also offer databases to search for the best deals. Have a plan to save time, headaches and money.

Check sale dates.

Some sales are only early bird specials & others last all weekend. Know where you need to be on Friday and what can wait until the weekend.

Stick to your budget.

Bringing cash instead of cards can help prevent overspending. We all want to enjoy the season of giving, but don’t give yourself financial stress for months after.

Know your prices.

Is a deal REALLY a deal? Retailers are known for marking up prices to mimic a sale. Know your numbers before cashing out.

Buy discounted gift cards.

If you plan to do a lot of your shopping at a specific store, purchase gift cards in advance on resale sites such as GiftCardGranny.com. Some gift cards are offered at a 50% savings!

Pace Yourself.

Tis’ the season for deals! Black Friday is known for its savings on hot buys such as electronics. Some better deals on clothes and toys come later in the season. For example, in past years Target has offered 30% off toys for one day only. Stack that with your red card savings, and some deals can’t be beat.

Price match.

While stores typically won’t price match on Black Friday, the rest of the holiday season you can price match! So, if the toy is 40% off at Kohl’s, but the shelf is empty, head to Target!

Save receipts.

Mind your return dates and hold onto receipts for price comparison.

Use social media.

Follow store pages all season for the latest news on sales. For even more insider tips, join Facebook groups for your favorite stores, find deal groups and Black Friday pages like BfAds.

Leave kids & spouses at home.

Let’s be real here, your kids slow you down on a normal day of shopping, don’t bring them into the war zone. And your spouse, unless you have a huge box to carry, leave them with the kids.

Mind your sanity.

If you experience anxiety in crowds or can’t handle a few rude customers, Black Friday may not be for you. Plenty of deals can be scored on other days as well as online, in your PJs. Don’t pressure yourself to save a few dollars.

T reat workers kindly.

Most workers left their families during Thanksgiving dinner to serve you. They are under pressure to be fast, polite and efficient no matter the customer. Make their day a little easier by thanking them for their service, being polite and understanding.

Establishing a

STRONG sense of SELF

The sense of self can be defined as how you describe and identify yourself and includes your view of your abilities as well as your values. If your child has a strong sense of self, she is more likely to succeed academically in school and less likely to become a target for bullies. The negative behavior of others or experiencing failure is not as likely to distract your child from working towards her goals or from upholding her values if she has a strong sense of self. The foundation for a sturdy sense of self is established in infancy. Even though infants don’t have a sense of self-awareness, the bonding between an infant and her parents helps lay this foundation. A baby whose parents respond to her cues and consistently spend time interacting with her in a positive way by returning her smile, for example, knows she is loved and worth the attention of others. By age 2, your child has developed a self-awareness and is beginning to see herself from the perspective of others. One sign your toddler is self-aware is the use of words like ‘Me!’ or ‘Mine!’. During early childhood, your child begins forming a description of who she is and starts writing an internal autobiography, so to speak, that is added to continuously by her life experiences. Parents play a crucial part by providing the opportunities and encouragement necessary for

HOO’s INSPIRED their young child to discover her interests and her strengths. Parents also provide the support their young child needs so she is not discouraged by failure. Surprisingly, young kids between the ages of 4 and 7 are able to analyze their achievements and form a sense of self on a level very similar to that of older kids and adults, according to a study performed by New York University and published in the journal Science Daily in August 2017. This finding shows that even preschoolers can have their self-image impacted by failure. This study reinforces the impor tance of staying in tune with your child’s sense of self by spending time each day, distraction-free, to listen to her describe both her accomplishments and her setbacks.

SKIN REJUVENATION

HOO’s INSPIRED

For parents who work outside the home, it can be stressful to find that your work - life balance is being impacted by an overscheduled calendar packed full of work tasks, volunteer obligations and kids’ activities. Here are some steps to take to reduce stress and restore a work - life balance for your family. The first step in balancing your schedule is to look for tasks or activities you can trim from your calendar. For example, has your child talked you into committing to hosting more playdates at your house in one week than you really have time for? Also, look for ways to team up with others to divide and outsource tasks that take up time that could be used to complete higher priority tasks. For example, talk to other moms on the sports team about setting up a carpool schedule and take turns being responsible for the pickup and drop-off from

practice, or outsource the task of grocery shopping. Next, let go of perfectionism. Instead of striving for perfection both in your professional life and your family life, work toward excellence. Sometimes, we even ask for perfectionism from our kids and everyone feels burnt out on school work and after school activities. Keep your goals and expectations realistic for yourself and for your kids. If you are trying to make changes in your professional life and your family life at home, make the changes in small steps. Finally, ensure everyone in your household has their basic needs met. We all need enough sleep, a healthy diet and enough exercise. Many parents sacrifice the time for exercise and meditation to make time to fit in that last bit of work before they leave for the day or to ensure their kids get to all their activities on time. However, remember that if you don’t take care of your mind, body and spirit, you won’t have the energy and well-being needed to excel both on the job and in your parenting role at home.

KEEPSAKE HANDPRINT

HAND TOWEL Dress up your kitchen with this keepsake fall craft! Courtesy of midgetmomma.com

DIRECTIONS Pour a quart size blob of each paint onto your paper plate. With your foam brush, paint your child’s hand with red, yellow or orange paint. Press their hand onto the towel. Choose different colors to paint their hand and press it into the towel at different angles. Repeat this until both towels are covered in hand prints. Take the thin paint brush and outline all the hand prints with the brown paint. To make the leaves veins you will paint a thin line down the palm of the hand print. Off of that line, you will need to make smaller lines going off the side on an angle. Allow the paint to completely dry before use. Follow the directions on your fabric paint when washing your towels.

This sense of making a difference and the opportunity to care for others can fill your child with a sense of purpose and an excitement that they won’t be able to get from a new toy or video game.

How TO Get Your Family Involved in Volunteering

Volunteering is an excellent way to teach your kids important life skills. In addition, volunteering during the holidays helps promote an ‘attitude of gratitude’ in your household and takes your child’s mind off their holiday wish list. Volunteering Is For the Whole Family It is not only those who you help that benefit when you and your family volunteer. When kids volunteer, they learn important skills, like following directions and collaborating with others. Your child will also learn more about her abilities and talents when she volunteers, including leadership skills. Older kids may discover they enjoy helping to organize the volunteer activities and overseeing younger volunteers. This self-discovery is especially valuable to teens deciding which career path to select in high school. Volunteering builds character by teaching empathy and compassion. The real world is a harsh place and it can be tempting to shelter kids from the hard, cold realities of natural disasters, poverty and illness. However, by allowing kids to see that others in the community need help, many times due to circumstances beyond their control, you allow them to see that their unique set of skills and talents are needed by others in their community.

It is important to start teaching empathy and compassion early, before the turmoil of the teen years begins. Make volunteering part of your family’s lifestyle, even if your kids are very young. If your kids are young, keep it simple by looking for age-appropriate opportunities close to home. There are more than you may realize. Many churches organize meals for members who have become suddenly ill or experienced the unexpected loss of a family member. You may find opportunities at church or your child’s school to ‘adopt’ a needy family. Your young child who loves to help grocery shop and cook can help prepare a meal to donate or can have fun using the part of her allowance set aside for charity to shop for toys for a needy child or homeless pets. Another fun opportunity for young kids is creating art work and cards for nursing home residents who do not have anyone visiting them on a regular basis. As your child approaches the teen years, there will be more opportunities available to her. Identify organizations that may have opportunities that match your child’s interests and visit the organization’s website to gather information about how to apply for them. Many organizations require a background check and a volunteer orientation. Some may even require you and your child to interview for a volunteer position. Do I want an

Elf House in my

Elves are appearing in homes all over America. Your child wakes up, rubs their tired eyes and is greeted by a mischievous elf who toilet papered their bedroom! Hilarious, right? Last holiday season I toiled with the idea of Scout the Elf for my then 2 year-old, but decided he wasn’t old enough. This year, he’s all about Santa, more affectionately known as Mr. Ho, Ho, Ho! My kiddo has become quite the prankster himself, and I know Scout will bring holiday cheer to my child. Heck, it may even bring some cheer to his Scrooge of a father. But, don’t we have enough fa-la-la? I’m already packing the advent calendar, wrapping 25 Christmas themed books for holiday bedtime stories, planning a Gingerbread House party, and buying tickets to Fantasy in Lights. This is on top of decorating the inside and outside of my house plus all the other holiday cheer responsibilities. But have you seen the cute rain jackets for Elf? I mean, I’ve already decided to name him Tinsel. So let me break it down for you:

by Maria Phillips, Online Manager for Family & Kids and Local Mom

Cons:

• The Elf is comparable to Chucky or Annabelle. A doll that comes to life at night and gets into trouble? Yikes. • It’s another task after your kids go to sleep. If you forget to move the Elf, your kids start to worry he’s sick or angry. • When your child doesn’t listen, you must remember to use the Elf as a bargaining chip. • In all seriousness, you’re lying to your child, encouraging credulity and using a doll to police your child. If you’re not convinced the Elf is for you, there are some alternatives that may fit your parenting style or religious affiliations a little better:

Pros:

Mensch on a Bench: Mensch is very similar to Elf, but is made with Jewish children in mind. Every day at Hanukkah give your Mensch a Shamash candle to hold. If your child behaves, Mensch will let go of the candle easily and the child will receive gifts, if not, the child does not receive gifts.

• It gives your child something to look forward to each morning. I’ve spoken to kids who couldn’t stop raving about Elfie’s antics.

Giving Manger: The Giving Manger helps families shift the focus of Christmas back to giving. A piece of straw is placed in the manger for each kind deed or act of service performed. On Christmas Day, the baby Jesus is placed in the manger filled with service and love.

• This little doll is the ultimate tattle-tale, watching your child’s every move and reporting back to the man in red. It does help to keep your kiddo on their best behavior.

• It’s a teaching opportunity to solve clues and answer riddles to find the Elf.

HOO’s HELPFUL Preventing Electric Overload The holidays are almost here and you may have already begun planning your outdoor holiday light display and or plan on buying a new appliance when the holiday sales begin. However, it is important to take steps to keep the electrical circuits in your home from becoming overloaded before plugging holiday decorations or new appliances. If the electrical system in your house is properly installed, an overloaded circuit will simply trip the circuit breaker (or in older homes, a fuse will blow) and cause the power in the house to go out. However, if there is an issue with the wiring, an overload could lead to a fire. Here is how to prevent ending up in the dark due to an overloaded circuit. Map the circuits in your home to know which outlets share the same circuit. That way, you will know if your Christmas tree is sharing a circuit with a space heater that you occasionally plug in and draws a lot of power.

Do the math to prevent putting too much load on individual circuits. Look for the amperage for the circuit on the breaker box. Residential circuits are typically 15 or 20 amps. Multiply the amperage by the voltage (typically 120 volts) and then multiply by 80% to get the maximum load for the circuit, measured in watts. For example, 15 amps x 120 volts x 0.8 = 1440 watts. Add up the wattage of all the devices you wish to plug into the circuit to ensure the total wattage of all the devices does not exceed this maximum load for the circuit. It is a good idea to plan on using less than the maximum wattage for the circuit, so that you can plug in a device temporarily when needed. If you want to add an appliance to your home but can’t find a circuit that can take the extra load safely, consult an electrician first to see if it will be possible to add another circuit to your home to power the appliance.

HOO knew?

Every Day Is Hump Day For camels, that is! But why do camels have humps? No, it’s not to store water as commonly believed, although it can extract water from it. The camel has no layer of fat under its skin like most mammals. The hump is a large deposit of fat, weighing up to eight pounds, that the camel can use for food and water in times of need. By breaking down the fat into hydrogen and oxygen, water is formed. A camel can go for days and weeks without water or food. When it does, its hump shrinks as its energy and water are used up. When it finally gets water, it can drink up to thirty gallons at one time. Camels can eat almost anything they find growing in the desert, even cacti. Their mouths have extremely thick skin, which cactus needles cannot penetrate. Speaking of humps, the Dromedary, or Arabian Camel, has only one hump, while the Bactrian camel has two.

Wise Choices for You & Your Family

“V” W RD

As parents, we know how vital veggies are to our kids’ health, whether they like them or not. But not all vegetables are created equal. Each vegetable comes with its unique combination of nutrients and benefits – some are a powerhouse source of nutrition.

If you have a picky eater, it’s all the more reason to have your child try a broad variety. There’s bound to be a couple of veggies your child will dig if the vegetables are prepared just the right way.

Kale. This dark green leaf packs a whopping 684% of the RDA of vitamin K, and well over the RDA of vitamins A and B6.

If your kids like salad, just add a mix of kale to the lettuce. If they aren’t salad eaters, kale makes a great addition to smoothies.

Sweet potatoes.

Vitamins A, B5 and B6, riboflavin, thiamin, niacin, and carotenoids makeup sweet potatoes. Thanksgiving isn’t the only time of year you can eat them. Sweet potatoes make yummy french fries, which can even be baked rather than fried. Look for one of oodles of baked sweet potato fry recipes out there.

Bell peppers.

Red, orange, yellow, or green, bell peppers are nutritious whatever the color. All are high in vitamin C, with red bell peppers containing 169% of the RDA. Also, bell peppers are high in vitamin A and other nutrients as well. Do your kids live by the motto “everything tastes better with ranch?” If so, give them bell pepper slices for dipping. Bell peppers also go great on pizza and sautéed to top hot sandwiches.

Brussels sprouts. Vitamins

K and C are what Brussels sprouts are particularly noted for. But this veggie carries numerous other nutrients in decent amounts as well. Cut them in half, then stir-fry them in sesame oil with other vegetables or roast them with olive oil and salt.

Asparagus.

Folic acid is what asparagus is especially noted for because it contains 60% of the RDA. But asparagus also contains a healthy amount of vitamins K and C, as well as several other essential nutrients. Try Grilled asparagus. Brush them lightly with olive oil then add salt and pepper. Place the spears on the grill for 10 minutes, turn them, then give them a few more minutes until they’re lightly blackened.

Spinach.

Now here’s an RDA that’s impressive. Spinach contains 987% of the RDA of vitamin K. Spinach is also an excellent source of vitamin A, manganese, folate, magnesium, iron, copper, and several other nutrients. You can add spinach to both smoothies and pizza. Spinach quiche & spinach pie are also dishes kids love.

Broccoli. Here’s another vegetable that’s

a rich source of vitamin K packing 245% of the RDA. Broccoli also exceeds the RDA for vitamin C and is an excellent source of chromium, folate, and fiber. Mix broccoli into most any cheesy dish, and kids will gobble it up. Broccoli cheese soup, broccoli smothered in cheese, and other cheesy pasta dishes with broccoli added are good options.

Pumpkin (canned).

This is an outstanding source of vitamin A, containing 2 ½ times the RDA, not to mention a fair amount of a host of other vitamins and minerals. Many desserts can be made from pumpkin. So the next time you’re in the mood to bake, make something with added nutritional value. Try making pumpkin pie, bread, cookies or cheesecake.
