HOO’s FIT If you are feeling a bit blue, it may be beneficial to take a look at your diet. Your diet may be missing foods containing nutrients necessary for the production of mood-boosting hormones. Here are some tips on foods you may want to add to your diet in order to reduce the number of bad mood days you experience. Do eat whole grains. Carbohydrates have been given a bad name by the proponents of extremely low carb weight loss diets. However, it turns out that whole grains contain nutrients that help with the production of serotonin, a mood regulating hormone. Researchers found that eating a very low carb diet can make people more prone to feel depressed and irritable. Choose your carbs wisely, though. Highly refined carbohydrates like white bread and sugary, processed snack foods, can put your blood sugar on a roller coaster ride that will leave you feeling tired and down. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. Fruits and vegetables are loaded with antioxidants and many contain folic acid. Both antioxidants and folic acid help protect against the development of mood

Good Mood Foods disorders. The fiber in fruits and vegetables keep your digestive systems working well, which helps promote a feeling of good overall health. Eat fish a couple of times a week. Fatty fish, like salmon, tuna, and herring, is a good source of the omega-3 fatty acids. Research studies have shown that this nutrient may help protect against mood swings, including those brought on by postpartum depression. Treat yourself to some chocolate. Researchers have found that dark chocolate may increase the production of brain endorphins, which promote a feeling of well-being. Limit it to about 1 oz, though, since dark chocolate is loaded with calories.

HOO’s HUNGRY
CROCKPOT by sixsistersstuff.com
DIRECTIONS
In a large bowl, mix the pumpkin and cream cheese together. Then mix in the eggs, butter, and sugar. Now add the flour, baking soda, and cinnamon. Finally, gently stir in the chocolate chips. Spray bottom of slow cooker with baking spray and pour batter into it. Cover and cook on HIGH for 3 hours or until toothpick inserted comes out clean. The outsides might be a little darker brown, just make sure the inside is done so it isn’t gooey. When done, remove slowcooker from heat and let cool for 10-15 minutes. Flip onto a platter and serve at warm or room temperature. Serve with Honey butter, butter, or even ice cream!
INGREDIENTS • 3/4 cup canned pumpkin • 4 ounces cream cheese, softened • 2 eggs • 1 cup sugar or substitute • 1 teaspoon baking soda • 2 cups flour • 1 teaspoon cinnamon • 8 tablespoons of butter, melted • 1 cup chocolate/carob chips • 1 cup chopped nuts if desired

Helping Kids Deal With
Dislexia
Dyslexia is a language processing disorder that interferes with reading fluency and comprehension. Though it is commonly thought of as a disorder which causes trouble distinguishing left from right, this is not the best description. Instead, dyslexia is more accurately described as a disorder that prevents the linking of written letters and words to the way they sound. Studies of dyslexia have shown it to be genetic and that it tends to run in families. To find out what causes dyslexia, researchers studied the neurological structure of the brain of people with dyslexia. Their study revealed that the network connections between the different parts of the brain responsible for the complex tasks of reading and writing are weaker than those in a brain of a person without dyslexia. Dyslexia varies in severity and can affect people differently. Some have trouble with reading fluency and comprehension while others may have trouble with understanding complex concepts expressed in spoken words. Spelling and grammar can also be a challenge for those with dyslexia, making expressing words in writing difficult. There is no cure for dyslexia, so those diagnosed with it face a lifelong challenge. Children with dyslexia are of normal intelligence, and when placed in special intervention programs that teach alternate learning methods for reading and writing, they are able to reach their full potential in school and later in adulthood. The earlier dyslexia is diagnosed, the sooner your child receives the special help he needs get past the roadblock to reading and writing success that dyslexia presents. Here are some warning signs to watch for.
Early childhood:
Dyslexia can be harder to spot at this age, but it pays to be vigilant if there is a family history of dyslexia. The warning signs during the preschool years include a delay in beginning to speak,
having trouble matching letters with the way the letters sounds, having trouble remembering the alphabet, and struggling to identify words that rhyme. A preschooler with dyslexia may have difficulty with pre-reading exercises that require the blending the letter sounds together into words.
School age children:
Dyslexia is easier to spot once your child enters school and not only begins to learn how to read, but is also expected to be able to follow spoken instructions. If your child’s reading fluency and comprehension test scores are well below that expected for his grade level, this may be a warning sign. Most children learn to read in kindergarten or first grade. If your child also has trouble following instructions, don’t assume that this is because he is not paying attention or lacks motivation. It may be that dyslexia is interfering with his comprehension of complex instructions. A child with dyslexia may also struggle with writing and learning new vocabulary words. Teens: Even though there is no cure for dyslexia, it is never too late to seek treatment. The warning signs of dyslexia in teens and adults are similar to those of children. Teens may have trouble reading, with math problems, and with memorizing information. In addition, there may be difficulty with understanding jokes or idioms. If you suspect your child is displaying symptoms of dyslexia, make an appointment to see his pediatrician. Dyslexia is diagnosed with a formal test. If your child is diagnosed with dyslexia, the next step is to arrange for him to receive the support he needs. Children with dyslexia need special tutoring as well as plenty of emotional support. Ask his tutor or special education teacher what you can do at home to help him practice his reading skills.

It Takes Two to Play!
Making playtime twice as much fun is as easy as adding games and gear that invite kids to pair up and play hard. Two-player toys encourage a natural ebb and flow between kids that strengthens their sense of sportsmanship, teamwork and fair play. It’s time to double the good times with the following recommended toys and games that take two!
Table Tennis
Spiro Hop Bouncer
Table tennis is an addictive sport. With broad paddles, light-as-air balls and a small net, it’s one of the easiest sports to just walk up and play. And now you can bust out a recreational set that turns any smooth table into a table tennis arena! Lightweight, compact and portable, this table tennis set is perfect for family reunions, playdates, church outings, or any event with tables that can quickly be transformed for a ping-pong-pair showdown.
Perfect for pairs, the Spiro Hop Bouncer is a sturdy improvement over traditional t e e t e r- t o t t e r s . On a stable tripod base, the Spiro adds bouncing and spinning to the normal see-saw ups and downs. With inflatable balls absorbing the impact under the seat, there are no more hard landings when seats hit the ground. It comes complete with stakes to anchor the set for outdoors and padded floor protectors for indoor use.
Ogo Sport Disc Set
Ultra Range Walkie-Talkie
F e a t u r i n g elements from several sports, the OgoSport Disc Set has ‘c atch-and throw’ at its heart, but it’s range of activities expands far beyond. The round disc frames a trampoline-like surface that catches the ball and then adds extra spring as a player launches the ball back. With its large surface area, smaller hands can have a better chance at snagging the ball with the disc. This set is a versatile and action-packed combination of twoperson action!
Whether your kids are in pretend-play mode as secret agents or on the move as bonafide explorers, giving them the means to communicate at a distance will amplify the whole experience! The Ultra Range Walkie Talkie set features a simple click-and-hold button to talk – with a volume control for those sensitive missions that require a “sneak” factor. With a 2-mile range this walkie set is ideal for hiking, outdoor festivals, neighborhood expeditions, and anywhere a pair of pals seek to explore their bigger world.

New Flu Guidelines Released
Late fall and winter are the peak seasons for your kids to catch the influenza virus. This year, the CDC still recommends that all kids over the age of 6 months receive the flu vaccine. However, the flu vaccine guidelines for kids age 2 to age 8 have changed a bit. Researchers found that the nasal spray flu vaccine is more effective than the flu shot in preventing the flu in kids this age group. As a result, the nasal spray flu vaccine is being recommended for kids age 2 to age 8.

HOO’s HEALTHY
Asthma: Keeping It at Bay Asthma is a chronic condition in which the airways in the lungs become swollen and narrowed, leading to wheezing, coughing, and a feeling of tightness in the chest. Here are some asthma prevention tips to help reduce the likelihood that your child will experience an asthma attack. Some studies have indicated that exclusively breastfeeding your baby for the first 4 to 6 months may help keep her from developing allergies and asthma. One theory is that breastfeeding builds your baby’s immune system, making it less likely for her to develop infections, like colds, that could trigger asthma attacks. Other studies have not shown similar results, so the jury is still out on this one. However, breastfeeding has been proven to be beneficial in so many ways that there is no harm in trying to use it as an asthma and allergy prevention measure also. Research has shown that children who are raised in ultra-clean environments, where antibiotic soaps are used extensively, are more likely to develop allergies and asthma.
Stick to using plain soap and water instead, or use alcohol based hand sanitizer when hand washing is not possible. Before sending your child outside to play, go online to check the for smog levels and pollen count in your area. High levels of air pollution could trigger an asthma attack. Catching a cold or the flu could trigger asthma attacks. Teach your child to avoid being around those who are sick and to wash her hands frequently to reduce the chances of catching a cold or the flu. Exercising outdoors in extremely cold weather or very dry weather can trigger an asthma attack. Let your child’s pediatrician know if exercise aggravates your child’s asthma and ask for him to recommend a pre-exercise treatment plan to prevent exercise-induced attacks. Take steps to reduce exposure to indoor allergens, such as dust mites and mold, which can trigger an attack.

Picture a New Attitude
When things in our lives trigger a funk, a fit of pique or simply a sulk, it’s hard for all of us to reassess, decompress and move past a bad mood. Kids are especially sensitive to the moments that set them off. The following titles explore in light-hearted ways the things that can spark a bad mood along with suggestions and solutions that may help kids power through the mad moments and bounce back with a new attitude!
No Fits, Nilson!
By Zachariah Ohora (Dial / Penguin)
Amelia and Nilson do everything together. Every moment in their day is shared and it’s usually a fun adventure …until something goes wrong. Everyday obstacles can trigger a raging fit from Nilson. Amelia and her mom’s mantra “No fits, Nilson!” helps him control his anger. But when one final hurdle emerges to disappoint Amelia, Nilson will have to step in with a solution that calms Amelia down before she has a fit of her own. With a calming voice (and a final page that will delight readers), “No Fits, Nilson!” offers gentle reminders that frustrations are temporary and patience has big rewards.
It Wasn’t Me!
By Oliver Jeffers (Philomel / Penguin)
The Hueys typically get along with each other very well. But when a regular conversation takes a wrong turn, their amiable talk quickly devolves into an argument. Only when an outsider appears does the disagreement dissolve and cool heads prevail. The Hueys’argument falls away as unimportant and they reconnect through their shared interest. Jeffers’ adorable simply-rendered characters present a subtle and positive message that supports finding a peaceful perspective when tempers flare.
Olive and the Bad Mood By Tor Freeman (Templar/Candlewick)
When Olive’s good mood is ruined by a tumble over her loose shoestring, the chain of events that follow illustrates how a bad mood can become contagious. Cloaked in her anger, Olive stomps past her best friends who each greet her cheerfully, sharing insults along her way. Once Olive finally finds something that makes her happy, she snaps out of her funk and returns to share her good fortune with her friends. But now they’ve caught her bad mood and it’s up to Olive to bring them back around. A precious cautionary tale, this title illustrates how a bad attitude can spread, and worse, come back home to roost.

online safety We spend time every day online browsing websites, posting updates on social networking sites, and making financial transactions. Here are some steps you can take to keep your identity and info safe against those who are looking for an opportunity to steal it. First, secure your hardware, software, and network. To do this, you need to install a firewall, ant-virus software, and anti-spyware software on your computer. Keep your operating system and the software on your computer updated. Allowing the updates to install will prevent malicious computer code from exploiting weaknesses in your computer’s software or operating system and stealing your information. Also, be very cautious about using public Wi-Fi networks with a mobile device or laptop. Public Wi-Fi networks are not always secure and there is a chance someone could intercept your information. Use strong passwords for your online accounts. Never use easy-to-obtain information, like your kids’ names or birthdays for passwords.
HOO’s HELPFUL
When setting up an account on social networking sites, check your privacy settings. On some sites, the default is ‘public’. Make sure you select ‘private’, so that only your select group of friends can see your full profile and what you post. Also, keep the information on your public profile to a minimum. Identify thieves can use information like your full name, address, birthday, and home town to open credit cards or take out loans in your name. Instruct your kids to never share this type of personal information and not to ‘friend’ anyone they don’t know in real life. Never click on links embedded in emails from someone you don’t know. They could lead to a website that will infect your computer with code that will steal your passwords and information. Also, be vigilant for ‘phishing’ scams and delete emails asking for personal information or money. Reduce this sort of spam by using an email provider that has strong anti-spam filtering and by creating a secondary ‘junk’ email account to use for registering for websites and subscriptions. Use caution when selecting what type of info you send via email. Email is not secure unless it is encrypted.
