Year
At every stage of development, parents face new challenges, and the elementary school years are no exception. Here are some tips to help you through this adventuresome but trying stage.
1. Tattletails. Does your child tattle
every time a sibling or playmate breaks a rule? Explain to your child the difference between tattling and telling. Tattling is when another child breaks a rule (or maybe there is no rule), and the action your child is tattling about is relatively harmless. Telling, on the other hand, is when another child is doing something that could cause harm to oneself or others. Make a rule that you don’t want to hear any tattling, but that telling is okay and even necessary.
2. Lying. Every child tells a lie at some
point or another. Talk to your child about how lying diminishes one’s ability to trust your child. Explain how it can impact your child’s relationships. Then, if you catch your child in a lie, explain how your child’s future freedom and privileges will be dependent on how well you can trust your child.
3. Media overload. With the variety of media available to kids, it’s difficult to know where to draw the line. Invite your child to help you establish rules about media use, such as total number of hours per day your child can use media, how much of that time can be spent on specific forms of media and measures you’ll take if the rules are violated. 4. Chore wars. As your child grows, so
should your child’s responsibilities. During the early elementary years, choose a small number of simple chores. As they grow, increase the number or level of difficulty. Set a regular schedule for each task and offer daily or weekly rewards or an allowance.

5. Homework hassles. This is a routine challenge for so many parents. Set up a meeting with your child to discuss homework and establish some rules together. Give your child a couple of choices too, such as 30 minutes of free time or media time before beginning homework. Avoid saving homework for late in the evening though. 6. Name-calling & teasing.
Sometimes when kids call each other names, they’re just playing. But if it’s one-sided, mean-spirited, or the child on the receiving end seems hurt by it, it’s usually best to intervene. Make it clear to the child doing the teasing how hurtful the behavior is and it isn’t acceptable.
7. The birds and the bees.
The question of ‘where do babies come from’ and discussions of puberty can leave even the most open-minded parents fumbling for words. During the early elementary years, read to your child “Where Did I Come From?” or another age-appropriate book. By the late elementary years, discussions of puberty and sex should be more complete so your child is fully prepared for the changes that’ll take place. Also, make sure your child is accurately informed about sex because by late elementary some kids are already talking about it among each other.
8. Def iance. As kids grow, they become
more independent – and with independence comes defiance. Remember consistency is crucial to being effective. Also, don’t argue. If your child tries to debate you after you’ve already stated the issue and laid down the consequence, calmly say you’ve already made up your mind, and you’re not going to discuss it any further. Then leave the room so you won’t be tempted to argue or give in to your child’s badgering.

HOO’s FIT Smoothies are a delicious, convenient way to have a meal on the go. However, many store-bought smoothies have an unhealthy amount of sugar (as much as a can of soda) or as much saturated fat as a cheeseburger. In addition, some lack the protein or fiber needed to help keep you feeling full until your next meal. Here are some tips of how to make a delicious smoothie that will compliment rather than undermine, your nutritional and fitness goals.
• Use nonfat or low-fat milk or plain low-fat yogurt instead of frozen yogurt and ice cream to reduce calories and saturated fat. The dairy provides calcium as well as protein. If you don’t like dairy products, try an alternative like almond milk.
• Thicken
up your smoothie with ice. Drinking a thicker smoothie will help you feel full longer and using ice means you are not adding calories.
• Use whole fruits to blend your smoothie instead of fruit
juice. Fruit juice adds sugar and calories to the smoothie but does not add fiber like whole fruit does. A smoothie with fiber takes longer to digest and
5
Smoothies NOT ALL

keeps you feeling full longer. Berries, bananas, apples and peaches will sweeten your smoothie and add antioxidants and fiber to it. Buy some frozen berries and then cut up other fruits like apples and peaches and freeze them so they are at the ready.
•
Add greens to your smoothie like spinach and kale. They add powerful nutrients and fiber without significantly impacting the taste when they are blended with fruit.
•
To get a protein boost from your smoothie, try adding a couple of tablespoons of peanut butter or a serving of protein powder. It will help stabilize your blood sugar and prevent you from feeling hungry again right away.
• No one wants to drink a smoothie that does not taste good so if you feel the combination is too bland, try enhancing the taste by adding cocoa powder or spices like cinnamon and ginger. If you want sweetness, use a tablespoon or two of honey.

HOO’s learning 2. Critical reading skills: Some research shows that the graphic sequencing of comics helps children develop the same skills needed to effectively read websites, a crucial research skill for the 21st century.
By Kendall Ball Columbus Public Library Time and time again, I see children bring comic books and graphic novels to the public library check-out desk only to have their parent tell them to put it back and “get a real book,” or “pick something on your reading level,” as if comics are not challenging enough. I am here to encourage those parents: Comics do count as reading! While they may seem “easy” to those of us who are accustomed to traditional prose, comic books and graphic novels have their own set of advantages when it comes to your child’s literacy. 1.Reluctant readers: Engaging illustrations and action-packed storylines draw in children who may not normally read. Comics and graphic novels can motivate these children when long, text-filled novels do not.
3. Imagination: The use of images in graphic novels to tell stories encourages children to use their imagination to fill in the gaps, extrapolating action from still images. Next time your child begs for a graphic novel or comic book, think of these benefits and let them read! A Chattahoochee Valley Libraries card gives you access to a large collection of graphic novels in print as well as digital comics (6 downloads/month) available through Hoopla at www.hoopladigital.com. HOO’s PARENTING Teaching Leadership skills Leadership skills are valuable for children to learn. These skills provide your child the courage and perseverance to pursue his goals along with the ability to inspire others to do their best. Here are leadership skills your child can start learning now. 1. Emotional Intelligence. Emotional Intelligence (EI) is the ability to understand and manage your own emotions and the emotions of others. Someone with emotional intelligence can read how others are feeling and use this understanding to build successful interpersonal relationships and inspire others. The best way to develop EI is by modeling it. Your kids watch how you handle your emotions, especially strong ones like anger, and how you react to the strong emotions of others. 2. Ability to take risks and learn from failure. Sometimes parents keep their child from pursuing a new interest in an attempt to protect him from failure. However,
an understanding of risk and how to manage it comes from experiencing failure. Let your child take a risk and try out for the sports team or for that part in the school play. If he fails, be there to support him and encourage him to apply what he learned from the experience to his next endeavor. 3. Good teamwork. Many parents put a large emphasis on individual achievement that their kids never learn to be part of a team. Sign your child up for activities that enable him to exercise his communication skills and work with others to reach a goal. 4. Strong work ethic. Say ‘no’ to instant gratification. Instead, ask your child to create a plan to earn what he wants. Hold him accountable to it and let him experience the joy of achieving a goal through hard work. 5. Being authentic and trustworthy. Teach your child to mean what he says and follow through with it. Encourage him to be forthcoming when he does make a mistake. Leaders are human after all and are not perfect.

AFTER SCHOOL ACTIVITY GUIDE www.FamilyAndKidsGA.com
Hoo’s helpful Allowing kids to participate in activities outside of school provides time for your child to pursue his interests in sports or the fine arts, but it is all too easy to let your family’s busy calendar become overfilled. You and your kids feel like you are always on the go. As soon as you arrive home in the evening from your child’s activity, you rush to prepare dinner, get everything ready for the next day, and by the time you are finished, it is time to go to sleep. Then it all starts over again the next day. During the weekend, you may find little unscheduled time, with your child’s sports activities, home maintenance tasks, and social obligations keeping your family busy. Having no down time to slow down and relax can be stressful. Feeling stressed can harm relationships between family members and even impact the physical and mental well being of your family. Kids need unstructured time for free play. It allows them to exercise their creativity, use their imagination, and learn to entertain themselves. Schedule the unstructured time on your calendar just like you would any other commitment. You may need to limit the number of activities your child participates in to make room for this unscheduled time. Some

Schedule Unscheduled Time
parents do this by allowing their child to choose just one or two activities each season so that he can experience a variety of activities without being overscheduled. For example, your child may play soccer in the fall, join a swim team for the spring, and attend science camp in the summer. However, try to ban electronics during your family’s unscheduled time. You don’t want them taking the place of your child’s opportunity for free play and getting in the way of spending time bonding with your child. Instead, enjoy time playing outside with your child or ask your child to choose his favorite board games for a family game night.

HOO’s INSPIRED stay at home mom
struggles
Stay at home moms have the rewarding responsibility of caring for their children daily as they journey through the developmental milestones of childhood. Here are some unique challenges that might seem to be obstacles in your journey as a stay at home mom and how to address them.
• Others assume that you have plenty of extra time:
In truth, stay at home moms have a schedule packed full of doctor’s appointments, assisting with homework or homeschooling, errands to keep the household running smoothly, and after school activities. Those with infants and toddlers who need constant care are on call 24/7. Politely decline volunteer opportunities that overfill your calendar. You don’t have to provide more of an explanation than your schedule for the near future is already full.
• Feeling isolated from the rest of the world: It is easy to become absorbed in constantly caring for young children that you forget to build and maintain friendships. Both you and your kids need to get out and interact with others. Packing
everything up for your baby and toddler may not be easy, schedule time for lunch with an old friend or make new ones. Many moms are connecting through Facebook groups. For a list of local groups in our area that offer playdates, mommy guidance, and companionship, visit our website find “Mom Groups” under “Just 4 Parents.”
• Feeling a loss of identity: Take a class to build skills in your area of interest. Your local library is a great source for free classes in many different areas, such as crocheting, genealogy, yoga and more. If you enjoy crafting or have an artistic talent, consider turning that passion into a small business. • Lack of time alone: If you are caring for a child or homeschooling, you may feel there’s no time for you. Some moms meditate or exercise during their baby’s nap time while others get up a few minutes before their kids in order to have a quiet moment alone. Don’t feel guilty about asking your spouse to watch the kids while you exercise or relax. Just like everyone else, you need to get enough sleep, eat nutritious foods, and exercise to stay healthy. It’s important to pamper yourself. The happier you are, the happier your family will be.

Using a Doula Many expectant parents who desire extra support beyond that provided by their medical birth team often hire a doula to provide assistance during the time before, during and after their baby’s birth. A doula is a trained professional who provides information, physical support and emotional support to her clients but does not provide medical services. Research published in The American Journal of Managed Care showed that the support of a doula can help reduce the need for C-section births and reduce the need for having labor induced.
A BIRTH DOULA IS THERE TO SUPPORT HER CLIENT DURING BABY’S BIRTH A birth doula is there to provide support, comfort and information but not to make decisions for her client during labor and delivery. Once you select your doula and hire her, she will meet with you to become familiar with your birth plan or to help you write one. A birth plan is the story of what you would consider the ideal birthing experience. Doulas guide clients through the process of planning the birth by providing balanced information, after becoming familiar with the details of her client’s pregnancy and any complications that have occurred. Let your doula know which childbirth classes you have taken so she knows what types of breathing and relaxation exercises you learned and can coach you through them once labor begins. During labor and delivery, a doula does not try to take the place of her client’s partner, if he wishes to be the birth coach. She is there then to ‘coach the coach’ and advise the partner on how to best meet the needs of his laboring partner. A doula can teach her client’s partner how to provide comfort measures, like massage, and is there to stand in for him when he gets tired and needs to step out for a coffee break. Some birth doulas are also certified lactation consultants and can help get breastfeeding off to a good start after delivery.
Even if you are having a C-Section birth, a doula can still be a valuable member of your birth team. For clients having a C-Section birth, the doula can help her client understand what is happening in each step of the procedure and provide emotional support. She then helps ensure her client is comfortable when she is in recovery after the procedure.
SOME DOULAS HELP THE MOTHER BEFORE AND AFTER BABY’S BIRTH In addition to being a birth doula, some doulas also serve as antenatal doulas and postpartum doulas. An antenatal doula supports expectant moms who are on bed rest by doing light housework and helping provide any information her client needs to be able to make decisions. This is in addition to being a calm, caring source of emotional support during this difficult time. A postpartum doula helps a new mom in the first few weeks after bringing baby home from the hospital and some postpartum doulas are also lactation consultants who can help resolve any breastfeeding troubles. A postpartum doula may even teach baby massage techniques and help care for a fussy baby.
GIVE YOURSELF ENOUGH TIME TO FIND THE DOULA RIGHT FOR YOU It is a good idea to start looking for a doula a few months before your due date. Ask candidates for their resumes, which should include their certifications. The professional training and certification for doulas is provided by organizations such as DONA International or CAPPA. To find a doula, search the DONA International database of certified doulas at dona.org or ask your midwife for a referral.

Strong IN SCHOOL
The first several weeks of school are over and, most likely, you have received your child’s report card. With the holidays approaching, it is easy for students to become distracted from homework and projects. Here are a few tips to keep school performance strong and improve in any areas where your child may be struggling. At home, set up a homework area that is free from •distractions and make your expectations clear about your child’s after school schedule. Unless your child needs to use the computer to complete her assignment, the homework area should be an ‘electronic-free’ zone.
distributing the workload by having her mark on a calendar what needs to be completed each evening to prepare for the test or assignment deadline. If your child receives assignments daily that are due the next day, have her keep an agenda of what is due the next day, even if you get a text or email reminder from the teacher. Before you know it, she will be in middle school and expected to manage this on her own.
delay getting your child the extra help she needs if •sheDon’t is struggling. Your child’s teacher and school counselor
can help you determine what may be causing your child to underperform. If you feel your child may have a disability that is interfering with her education, ask for an evaluation. Advocating for your child can help determine if she has a disability requiring an individualized education plan (IEP).

WHAT IS:
(BPD) BORDERLINE ER RD PERSONALITY DISO Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is a form of mental illness. Characteristics of this condition include unstable moods and behavior and the inability to maintain stable relationships. People with BPD may act in an impulsive manner and don’t have a very stable view of their selfworth. Due to the instability in emotions and view of self, a person with BPD may consider a friend or family member to be someone he feels close to one day and strongly dislikes the next day. The unstable view of self may cause someone with BPD to feel empty and lost, without a clear sense of what he wants or his purpose in life. In addition, someone with BPD may have a strong fear of abandonment. Risky or suicidal behavior is a common symptom of BPD, along with self- harming behavior.
HOO’s Healthy A medical professional diagnoses BPD by first doing an exam to rule out any medical conditions that may be causing the symptoms and then by interviewing the patient about his symptoms. Collecting a family history of mental illness is a part of the diagnosis. Though a cause for BPD has not been identified yet, the risk factors for developing BPD may include having a parent or sibling who has been diagnosed with BPD. Researchers have also identified changes in brain structure in the portions of the brain that regulate impulses and emotions, though it is unknown if the changes cause BPD or are a result of it. Environmental factors, such as traumatic experiences, may also be involved in the development of BPD. People with BPD often report that they were abandoned or abused as children. A person with BPD often has other mental health conditions, such as bipolar disorder and anxiety disorders. The main treatment for BPD is psychotherapy provided by a trained medical professional. Someone with BPD may be hospitalized if he needs more intense therapy or to prevent self- harm. The family of someone with BPD can help their loved one recover by providing plenty of caring support during the treatment.

Highlight On Albany doctor, Alan Medley is bringing a boost to the Columbus, GA area, a VitaBoost. Vita-Fuse, an at-home IV hydration service, provides the same vitamins and nutrients you can pick up at the store, but is faster and more effective. The science is simple. When you take medication or a vitamin orally, you’re said to only receive 20% absorption, even less for chronically ill patients. When you receive an IV infusion, you’re able to get nearly 100% of the same nutrients delivered to your cells for uptake. “We don’t eat the way our ancestors ate.” Dr. Medley admits, “All our foods are processed and most of our nutrients are cooked out. I wish I could say we have a chance to eat a nice, healthy home cooked meal everyday but we don’t.” Dr. Medley and his wife use VitaBoost on a regular basis. It’s infused with B1, B2, B3, B5, B12, vitamin C, glutathione, calcium and magnesium. These treatments are administered by board-certified, registered nurses, most with an emergent care background, in your own home under the guidance of Dr. Medley and his colleague, Dr. Azer. The nurses bring everything needed and most treatments take less than an hour. Vita-Fuse also offers packages for those less than 100% moments in your life such as PMS, morning sickness, jet lag, cold, flu, stomach bug, migraines, hangover or anxiety. “We only need 2 hours notice.” Dr. Medley explains. “Wake up at 8am feeling sick, we’re there by 10am and you’re feeling much better
by 10:45.” During flu season, there’s an increase in the demand for the VitaRevive treatment. This package includes numerous vitamins but also adds prescription strength Zofran, an anti-nausea medication, and Toradol, an anti-inflammatory. “We’re using the same protocols and treatments as the emergency room. We’re just doing it much cheaper and in a much more convenient location, your recliner.” The next time you’re sick, skip the four-hour ER wait, the hefty co-pays, and the exposure to other sick individuals, and give VitaFuse a call. For those interested in looking their best, and who isn’t?, Dr. Medley recommends their VitaBeauty treatment. Vita-Fuse designed this infusion to give skin a healthy, more youthful glow. This treatment contains a specific blend of vitamins and nutrients that promotes healthy collagen, which is a proven foundation for radiant skin. Dr. Medley shared, “While it is said that beauty is only skin deep, truly beautiful skin comes from superior nutrition within. So many waste their money on creams and lotions that only touch the surface. They should invest in VitaBeauty infusions to get a total skin rejuvenation.” Appointments can be scheduled at Vita-Fuse.com. “Family & Kids” readers will get 20% off their first treatment until November 30 with the code FAMILY20.

DIRECTIONS Apply a strip of double-sided tape to the edge of tube and use to secure a piece of the streamer in place. Gather a few small toys & candy pieces to fit in the mini pinata. Don’t pack it too tightly or the prizes won’t fall out easily when the string is pulled. Cover the other end of the tube just like you did before except include a small tag before securing in place. This is what the kids will pull to release their prizes. Wrap the crepe paper around the tube until completely covered, securing with double-sided tape. Push a section at the top of the tube apart to create some space for the googly eyes. And that’s it!

SCHOOL BREAK
Traveling with young children sometimes does not feel like a vacation at all, between the planning, packing, and surviving the journey to the vacation spot. Opting for a staycation during fall or holiday breaks can allow you to relax and enjoy time with your family without the stress of travel and also can be more budget-friendly. There are plenty of local attractions that will keep your family occupied during the break from school. Experience the history of our military.
The National Infantry Museum, located just outside Fort Benning, has exhibits which tell the story of our nation’s military and preserves historical artifacts of our country’s armed services. Admission to the museum is free but donations are suggested. Tickets for movies at the Giant Screen Theater and for the combat simulator located inside the museum are available, and the movie schedule can be viewed ahead of time on the museum’s website. www.nationalinfantrymuseum.org Go for a relaxing bike ride on the Fall Line Trace. Pack a backpack with water & snacks
and enjoy a day on a paved bike path. The Fall Line Trace is the perfect ride for young riders because it is relatively flat. Two park and ride locations with restrooms are available on the trail. For some mountain biking fun, ride the Fall Line Trace to Flat Rock Park and enjoy the mountain biking trails. www.columbusga.gov/parks/fallline/fallline.htm Spend time outdoors at Flat Rock Park. In addition to mountain biking trails and hiking trails, this park also has a Disc Golf course, playgrounds, and picnic areas. The park also has a lake open to the public for
fishing. While you are there, enjoy the geology of the Fall Line by exploring the rock formations of metamorphic rock in the park and see the beautiful creek flowing through it. www.columbusga.gov/ parks/parks/flatrock/flatrock.htm Learn about local history on a walking tour.
Schedule a walking tour of Columbus with the Columbus Historic Foundation to learn more about local history. Tours are scheduled by appointment. www.historiccolumbus.com/tours
Enjoy a meal out at a restaurant you haven’t tried before. After all that time outdoors, everyone
will be hungry. Treat your kids to different types of cuisine by visiting one of the many locally owned restaurants in Columbus. You can make dining an experience in itself by exposing your child to not-soeveryday cuisines, such as Indian or Greek. Find local restaurants offering dining deals for kids on page 16.
Attend a performance at The RiverCenter.
The RiverCenter for the Performing Arts in Columbus is a state of the art performing arts center. This venue is the home of the Columbus Symphony Orchestra and hosts Broadway musicals, comedy, and other fine arts events. A list of events and tickets are on the RiverCenter’s website. www.rivercenter.org Spend a day at West Point Lake. Pack up your fishing gear and visit the public fishing areas at West Point Lake. Kids under 16 years of age can fish for free. Public fishing piers are available at Hardley Creek Park, Rocky Point Park, and McGee Bridge Park. Enjoy the beautiful fall colors while you fish. www.recreation.gov/recreationalAreaDetails.
