the TOKEN system

Finding healthy, effective approaches to gaining children’s cooperation and improving behavior isn’t always easy. This is especially true for kids with behavior problems stemming from attention deficit disorder or other behavior disorders. One approach that works well is a token system. Kids can earn tokens for good behaviors and lose tokens for misbehavior. Then they can use their tokens to purchase rewards or privileges.

Benefits of the token system The token system has several advantages over other forms of discipline. First, you can carry it out at any time and any place. So it makes empty threats a thing of the past because you can administer consequences immediately. The token system is also a positive approach and eliminates criticism, yelling, arguing and other ineffective practices.

Next, choose rewards your child can purchase with the tokens such as a toy or privilege. Include privileges your child asks for or regularly does and would be devastating to lose out on. Those rewards will be the strongest motivators.

Getting started

Be sure to set guidelines for rewards that require your time or attention. For a trip to the apple orchard, require a two-day notice. For a board game, agree to play within four hours of a request.

Make a list of the behaviors you’d like to work on with your child, such as using good table manners. If your child is five or older, also make a separate list of problem behaviors you’d like to reduce, such as hitting.

Set a variety of values to the rewards, as well, so your child has the option to make frequent purchases or save for something big. Small children require frequent opportunities to purchase rewards to maintain their interest.

For children under five, use the token system only for reinforcing positive behavior. The frustration caused by losing tokens for poor behavior will not be helpful. Rather, tell your child she will not receive any tokens as a result of the bad behavior.

Poker chips make good tokens. For older kids, assign different point values to each color.

Next, go through each list and prioritize. Choose only four or five behaviors to work on at a time. Determine how many tokens to reward or confiscate for specific behaviors. Keep in mind the number of tokens assigned to a behavior should fit the severity or difficulty of the behavior relative to others you’re working on. FOR EXAMPLE:

Hang up book bag and jacket Saying please and thank you Tattling

Earn 3 tokens Earn 1 token Lose 2 tokens

Also, estimate how many tokens your child is likely to earn and lose in a week. Your child should be able to earn enough tokens to pay for problem behaviors. If your child goes into debt, adjust the distribution of tokens accordingly.

Finally, when handing out tokens, praise your child. Say you’re proud of his actions or appreciate her thoughtfulness.

Variations If your child struggles to complete schoolwork and turn in assignments, use the token system for this alone. Ask your kid’s teacher to send home a daily report, then reward your child’s efforts. Only use grade-based rewards if your child is capable of achieving high marks without too much difficulty. Pre-teens may see tokens as childish. So, offer a checkbook ledger for tallying points instead. Have your kid fill in the ledger with the behavior or task and number of points earned. Then immediately initial it to show you’ve approved the points.

LEARNING

APPS

FOR

There are a large variety of math apps that provide a fun way to practice and improve your child’s math skills. Here are some traits to look for when selecting one: 1. The math app presents the math fact using a three-step process. The student is first asked to answer the problem, then if the incorrect answer is given the correct answer is displayed, and then the student is asked to try the problem again. 2. The lessons build upon one another and the student must master a math fact before moving on to the next one. 3. The app is able to identify points of trouble for your child that need review.

Here are some math apps that may be helpful: PRODIGY

This makes math fun by turning it into a fantasy-based game. Students can learn at their own pace and you can access a report that will identify any weaknesses in their math skills. Grades 1 – 8 Free (Android, iOS, Chromebook)

Cunningham Center 3100 Gentian Blvd, Suite 121 Room 25 Columbus, Ga 31907

HOO’s learning DOODLEMATHS:

This app targets the areas of math where your child needs extra practice, provides a customized lesson for him, and tracks his progress. Parents can view a report of these strengths and weaknesses and review progress. Grades preK – 8 Free, with in-app purchases (Android, iOS)

ROCKET MATH APP

The space travel theme of this game makes the review of math facts fun. The game has 10 tracks to choose from, and within each track, there are 26 levels (A – Z). When your child does not know the answer, Mission Control will assist with the answer and then ask your child to answer it again on his own. Parents can monitor the progress their child is making in the learning track selected. Grades 1 – 5 Can register for free trial before purchasing (iOS)

MMGuardian This pre-teen and teen monitoring app allows parents to monitor and block text messages, apps, calls, and URLs. It also has configurations to limit screen time.

Wheel of chores This app adds fun and excitement to chores. Kids can spin the wheel for a task and earn points toward rewards. At the end of the week, parents can distribute the money or prizes, or kids can bank their points to save up.

Dig IT Just dig with your fingers — and guide the ball to the cup. It’s easy, yet challenging. There is often a trick to solve the levels, sometimes you need take advantage of the objects’ speed, sometimes you need to make objects collide, but often it is enough to use your intuitive thinking.

HOO’s HEALTHY The Human Papillomavirus (HPV) is a group of related viruses that are transmitted by close skin-to-skin contact. About 40 types of the HPV virus are spread by genital contact. HPV is considered by the American Association of Pediatrics to be one of the most common sexually transmitted infections. What are the symptoms of HPV? Often, patients infected with HPV will not have any signs and will not even realize they have been infected. However, sometimes the body’s immune system does not defeat the virus quickly enough to prevent the virus from causing changes in skin cells that lead to warts or to pre-cancerous growths. Warts are benign growths in the upper part of the skin infected by the HPV virus. For women, warts from a genital HPV infection mostly appear on the vulva but may also appear near the anus or cervix. In men, warts from a genital HPV infection may appear on the penis and scrotum or around the anus. The non-genital HPV viruses may cause plantar warts on the feet, common warts on the hands and arms, or flat warts on the face or neck. If someone is infected by a type of genital HPV virus that causes cancer and the immune system fails to completely clear the virus, over time it may cause changes in cells that eventually lead to cancer of the cervix, vulva, penis, anus, or throat. Most cervical

7

WHAT IS: HPV cancers are caused by the HPV virus. The pre-cancerous changes in the cervix caused by the HPV virus can be detected by a Pap smear. What is the treatment for HPV? There is no cure for an HPV infection and if the virus has caused warts or pre-cancerous abnormal cell growths, they may clear up on their own. However, if not, the warts and abnormal cells may be removed by a doctor. How can you prevent HPV infections? Someone who is infected by HPV can spread it even though they have no symptoms. The best means to prevent genital HPV, besides completely avoiding genital contact, is receiving the HPV vaccine, which can be given in two doses to patients age 11 to age 15. For patients age 15 to age 45, the vaccine is given in three doses. Bad Rap Foods

HOO’s FIT

With all the weight loss and nutrition advice available online, it can be difficult to discern which foods are a healthy addition to your diet and which are not. Here are some foods that are commonly on the ‘bad’ list but may not deserve to be there. NUTS are often put on a list of foods to avoid because they contain fat and are high in calories. However, nuts contain mostly monounsaturated fat, along with some omega-3 and omega-6 polyunsaturated fats. The monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats can help lower LDL cholesterol levels, and omega- 3 and omega-6 fatty acids help with brain function and cell growth. Nuts also contain essential nutrients like magnesium and selenium. Since nuts are high in calories, a serving size is small, about 1.5 oz. Avoid nuts that are salted or are coated with sugar. Whole nuts can be a choking risk for kids under age five.

POTATOES are a starchy vegetable that has been put on the list of bad foods by low carb weight loss diets. However, when eaten in moderation, a baked potato with the skin on can actually be a healthy addition to a balanced meal. A medium baked potato on its own, without toppings added, is only about 160 calories, and the potato skin contains fiber, which helps you feel full longer. Potatoes are a good source of vitamin C, vitamin B6, and potassium, and one potato provides about 4.3 grams of protein.

OLIVES are often perceived as off-limits because they contain fat. However, most of the fat contained in olives is oleic acid, a healthy monounsaturated fat which studies have linked to reduced risk of heart disease. Olives are low-calorie and low glycemic index, which makes them a good replacement for other salty snacks like potato chips. Olives are fermented after they are picked, and, like other fermented foods, may contain probiotic bacteria that help support good digestive health. A serving of olives is small, about 4 or 5 large olives.

HOO’s HELPFUL

Parents asTeachers Oftentimes becoming a parent can leave one feeling overwhelmed. It is an ongoing joke that babies don’t come with “owner’s manuals.” The hospital workers hand you this bundle and send you on your way. If you didn’t babysit in the past or have younger siblings, you may feel clueless. Luckily there is an organization in our area available to navigate the early stages of your parenting journey. Parents as Teachers is an early childhood parent education, family support and school readiness program based on the premise that “all children will learn, grow, and develop to realize their full potential.” It is available free in Muscogee, Lee and Russell Counties to families of children from birth (or prenatally) to kindergarten entry. Grandparents, foster parents, or other caregivers are also eligible to participate in the program.

SCREENINGS: Child health and developmental screenings begin within 90 days of enrollment and provide information about child’s health and developmental progress through on-going tracking of developmental milestones l Parent educators will also carry out adult screenings to identify parental depression, substance abuse and intimate partner violence. l

GROUP CONNECTIONS: Parent educators organize monthly group connections, through which parents can obtain information, social support and share experiences with their peers. l Group Connections include family activities, presentations, community events, parent cafes and ongoing groups. l

THE ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF PARENTS AS TEACHERS ARE:

RESOURCE NETWORK:

PERSONAL VISITS:

connect with appropriate resources and overcome barriers to accessing services.

Parent educators schedule monthly home visits to share research-based information on positive parenting behaviors and child development. Parent-child activities promote attachment, discipline, health, nutrition, safety, sleep, transitions/routines and healthy births. l Family well-being includes a focus on family strengths, capabilities, skills and the building of protective factors. l

l Parent educators help families identify needs, set goals,

Pumpkin Destruction Day

It may be the first you heard of it, or you may celebrate and not even be aware. Pumpkin Destruction Day is a nationally recognized holiday. It’s the Saturday after Halloween dedicated to smashing, crushing and destroying gourds. “It is a legit holiday, an obscure one, but it is officially on the books!” boasts Adam Pugh. The holiday got its start at the Rock Ranch. “It’s cool to say... I created a holiday.” Adam Pugh is the general manager of the Rock Ranch, a 1,500-acre ranch created by Chick-fil-A founder, S. Truett Cathy as a foster home for children, located an hour outside of Columbus. In 2006, to continue being a good steward to the land, the ranch opened to the public. It started as a small operation, with Fall Family Fun Days, offering a pumpkin patch and other fun attractions. At the end of the season, half a patch of pumpkins remained, enough to fill a tractor-trailer. Pugh approached the acting manager with an idea, “we teach people about being good stewards [to the land], so we should at least compost the pumpkins,” the manager agreed and asked for a press release inviting neighbors to compost their pumpkins too.

However, Pugh wanted more, “Do you mind if we invite people to bust them and make a fun day of it?” Since then, Pumpkin Destruction Day has turned into a tradition at the Rock Ranch and over a dozen locations across the country. Each year, attendants of the event can BYOP (bring your own pumpkin) or use the Rock Ranch’s, and destroy them with 40’ lift drops, mallets, monster trucks (available for rides, too), pumpkin cannons, pumpkin bowling, pumpkin slingshots and more. In addition to the destruction, the ranch has over 35 attractions, from train rides to pole fishing, so it’s a destination for a wide age range of guests. The Rock Ranch gives kids and adults an opportunity to get outside, reconnect with the land, have fun, sweat a little and learn a bit about agriculture. Autumn is in the Air HOO’s CRAFTY

DANCING WITH

GUMMY WORMS

Quick and simple with lots of “oohs” and “aahs,” this experiment is sweet in more ways than one! Courtesy of playdoughtoplato.com

DIRECTIONS

With a wet knife, cut the gummy worms in quarters. We cut 3 worms in 12 long, slender pieces. Measure 3 tablespoons of baking soda and stir into a glass filled with 1 cup of warm water. Mix worms into the baking soda and water concoction. Wait 15 minutes for the worms to soak in the baking soda mixture. Fill the second clear glass with vinegar. As soon as the timer buzzes, quickly and carefully fish them out with a fork. Place a couple worms in the vinegar. Instantly they will form bubbles. After a few seconds, the worms will start rising from the bottom, writhing their way to the surface.

SCIENCE FACT: When you add the worms soaked in baking soda, the acetic acid in

the vinegar reacts with the bicarbonate in the baking soda. When an acid and base react, Co2 gas bubbles form on the worm, they pull the worm up with them, making them wiggle. As the bubbles burst, the worm falls back down until enough bubbles form to pull it up. The bubbles will continue to form until all the baking soda on the worm is used up.

HOO’s PICKS

Highlight On It has been all the rage in Taiwan for decades, and over 80 of them have popped up in Japan, Cat Cafés. It is a place where you can start your day off with your favorite things, cats and coffee. Are you purrplexed? Do you think we are kitten you? It’s furreal. It is a growing trend worldwide, and it is coming to Columbus. Local owners, Ally and Justin Lawson, were purr-suaded to open a cat café after experiencing one during their time stationed in the United Kingdom. Alley Cat Café is set to open in the Landings this fall; it will be the third cat café in the state of Georgia. The café allows visitors to get all the perks of cats without any of the responsibility, and it’s pawsitive for the cats too. Not only for the frequent belly rubs and treats, but the cats are given a safe place to live. The café will host 10 cats within their cat room. Each cat is a “death row escapee” saved from a local animal control. The non-profit, “Pat’s

ALLEY CAT CAFÉ

COFFEE & CATTITUDE

Rescue Cats,” evaluates the cats and decides who is a purrfect fit for the cat café, and also facilitates adoptions. The rescue looks for cats with playful purrsonalities that are extremely people-friendly. Guests of Alley Cat Café can watch the cats behind a glass wall while enjoying Black Rifle Coffee and snacks. For a more meoworable experience, visitors can purchase a space in the cat room. Each hour, 12 customers can visit the cat room. The experience costs $12 per hour for adults and $7 for kids, and each visit includes a drink. The café will also offer frequent visitor packages. The fees collected will offset the cost of vetting, food and supplies. For updates on opening, chances to win passes and more, visit Alley Cat Café at facebook.com/alleycatcafecolumbus. If you are interested in volunteering at the Cat Café, send an email to alleycatcafe@outlook.com.
