HOO’s learningwww.FamilyAndKidsGA.com Tips to Have Fun & Enhance Learning According to the United States Department of Commerce, 65 percent of jobs for kids today don’t exist yet, which is why it’s important for them to explore the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as those occupations are growing at a rate of 17 percent. This type of education increases science literacy, creates critical thinkers and can prepare the next generation for a bright future.

Use Technology to Your Advantage.

STEM is educational, but it can also be enjoyable for the whole family. Consider taking your child’s learning further with these five tips that can help create playful experiences and spark educational fun.

With some reports estimating children spend an average of seven hours a day on smart devices, look for ways to turn this time into learning time. Make tech time count with options that teach kids how to code, build apps and make digital projects come to life, or have them build their own video game from scratch. Kids can build their own levels, heroes and art to make their stories come to life.

Start Early.

Play Your Way.

Brain and skill-building experiences are critical for child development early in life, and high-quality, early STEM experiences can support children’s growth. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills can even be developed with programming and coding toys that light up and make sounds.

Encourage Creative Construction.

STEM toys can be fundamental learning tools that can help children build and construct creatively at any age. The world is a canvas for creative construction, as children can draw with tools around the house to build their first masterpieces. If your little one enjoys 3-D building and matching, a toy like the Mega Bloks Big Building Bag is perfect for little builders to explore the concept of construction with big blocks, allowing for endless creativity to build anything they can imagine.

Additionally, STEM toys can be helpful learning tools for everything from sequencing to building and planning. Integrating an activity that your child is already interested in is one way to introduce more education into their play time. With KamiGami, you can inspire future scientists with interactive STEM features where they can build six-legged animal robots and learn programming to create dances with lights, movements and sounds.

Find Resources in the Community.

Interacting with STEM toys and experiences offers nearly endless possibilities for young children to develop their skills in fun and engaging ways. Take advantage of opportunities locally, through events, library programs, retail partners and non-profits who are providing STEM activities, most for free. For a list of local STEM activities and resources, visit: FamilyandKidsGA.com/stem-columbus-ga

HOO’s HEALTHY A recent concern about the health impact of chemicals directly and indirectly added to food during the manufacturing and packaging processes is highlighted in a policy statement published in the AAP Journal of Pediatrics in July 2018. This document points out gaps in the Food and Drug Administration’s (FDA) regulatory process of food additives that need to be addressed through policy reform. The article provides guidance on steps parents should take in response to these growing concerns. While there is a lack of extensive data on the longterm effects of food additives, studies are beginning to show that some chemicals added to food can increase the chances of developing certain diseases or disabilities. Since children’s internal organs are still developing and their bodies are smaller, they may be even more vulnerable to potential harm from food additives. Bisphenols (used to line metal cans) and chemicals like perchlorate used in packaging are some that are of concern, along with nitrates and artificial food colors. The health impacts suggested by the studies of food additives include disruption of the endocrine system, impacts on the production of thyroid hormones and in the case of artificial food colors, an increase in ADHD symptoms.

Reduce Exposure to harmful

FOOD ADDITIVES The article had some recommended steps that can be taken to reduce your family’s exposure to potentially harmful food additives, which we share below.

• Use gl as steel to s or stainless pr and don’ epare food t wash pl astics in the di shwashe • Avoid r. eating pr ocessed • Eat as m eats. m and vege any fresh or froz tables as en possible fruits • Don’t us . e plastic warm fo containe rm rs food in th ula, breast milk to e microw or av e. • Avoid plastics wit code of 3, 6, or 7 h a recycling unless th labeled as ‘bio-b ased’ or ey are ‘greenw are.

HOO’s learning Encourage your curious kid with

NON-FICTION

By Laine Presley, Chattahoochee Valley Libraries, Children’s Dept.

Gravitation towards fictional stories seems to determine if a child “loves to read”; however, grown-ups sometimes overlook those children that prefer learning non-fiction over fiction. Subjects rooted in facts and real events occupy a space in a child’s world and can be excellent reading material for those children who do not engage with imagined tales. Non-fiction titles encourage children to expand their scope of knowledge by exposing and explaining natural phenomena, current events and rapidly evolving technology. The following are some tips to help you step up your child’s non-fiction game! Ask: Ask if your child wants to learn facts, or read a story. This can direct them to a choice they might not previously have known existed.

In the Children’s department at the library, this is often the first question we ask a hesitant reader. Often, these kids will respond with “learn facts!” Guide: When a child asks a question, be it about the sky or about a current issue they might have heard, a parent can usually find a resource to help their child better understand that topic. Answering initial questions and guiding your child to more resources will take some pressure off of you. It will also teach them valuable skills, like independence and drawing their own conclusions from what they learn. Check out the Chattahoochee Valley Library’s website at cvlga.org for digital resources and books! Support: Some children are more drawn to learning facts about things that fascinate them. Reading is for discovery – whether it is fairy tales or facts. Supporting a different kind of reader shows children it’s not always about loving stories, but that reading itself is what really matters. Non-fiction is a great outlet for those kids curious about their world. Books to explore: Who Was/Who Is Series, Mama Built A Little Nest, Star Stuff, Finding Winnie, Locomotive, and more! Visit your local Chattahoochee Valley Library for these and more.

HOO’s FIT ruit the New F s I bidden

For

F o o d?

If you have searched online for a weight loss plan, it is likely you have come across several that include fruit on the list of the diet plan’s ‘forbidden foods.’ Fruit does contain a form of natural sugar called fructose, so popular diets often group fruits in the ‘bad carbohydrate’ category and exclude them from weight loss plans. However, here is why you should think twice before completely excluding fruits from your diet, unless you have been instructed to do so by your doctor.

The carbohydrates in fruits are more complex than those in refined, simple carbohydrates, such as the sugar in a candy bar, because the sugar in whole fruits is bundled with fiber and a significant amount of water. The fiber slows down the digestive process, which helps you feel full longer. Fresh, whole fruit does not produce the spike in blood sugar that eating a snack full of refined sugar would produce. A study published in JAMA in February 2018, led by Dr. Christopher D. Gardner, of the Stanford Prevention Research Center, found that eating high quality, whole food, such as fresh

fruit, that satisfies your hunger for a longer period of time can help you eat less calories and lose weight. Fruit is an important source of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants which help keep your heart healthy and some fruits may even help protect you from cancer, according to Plant Based Diets: A Physician’s Guide, a study published in The Permanente Journal in 2016. The muscles in your body need carbohydrates to power them and fresh fruit provides that energy without the ‘sugar crash’ that occurs after eating a snack of refined carbohydrates. Fresh fruit provides the perfect energy boost to begin your day and it is a good pre-workout snack. Fruit does not take as long to digest as more complex carbohydrates like whole grain, which means the energy is available for your muscles to use sooner.

Life is busy. As parents, we juggle our careers, relationships, our children’s schooling, extracurricular activities and more. Often times our responsibilities exceed our physical availability and we need some help. Nicole Wrice, owner of Magnolia Heart Nannies, experienced feeling overwhelmed herself. She sought help but finding a nanny to accommodate her daughter, who has seizures, ADHD, and mild retardation, brought upon some obstacles. “When I’d try to hire a nanny, I was often told, ‘Oh I don’t know how to work with special needs kids. I don’t know how to give medications.’ I met a lot of other families having issues with caretakers who couldn’t do simple things like inhalers, etc. People were frustrated with the struggle to find a nanny for special needs,” Nicole explains. As a result, Nicole founded Magnolia Heart Nanny Services. Magnolia Heart offers different nanny packages to accommodate a family’s needs from full-time or

Magnolia Heart

live-in nannies to part-time babysitters. Employees are required to take courses in Autism, ADHD, Down Syndrome and inhaler usage. Each nanny also completes a background check and is CPR certified. “Our goal is to make our employees familiar, comfortable and competent,” Nicole says. MH also offers caretakers for seniors, event nannies, mom’s morning out and date night events. “If you need us, we’re there,” Nicole assures. Nannies have also been scheduled for the unexpected, like a special delivery. “We had a mom schedule us for the arrival of her new baby. I had a nanny on standby to stay with the sibling. It brings peace of mind.” She explains. Magnolia Heart Nannies strives to break away from the typical expectations of a nanny and strives to make life a little less hectic. Baby FormuLa Myths Debunked Baby feeding has many pervasive myths, especially about infant formula. Here are five of those myths debunked by Rallie McAllister, MD, MPH, family physician and co-author of The Mommy MD Guide to Your Baby’s First Year: Myth 1: Breast is best.

FACT: It depends on the mother and her baby. Baby formulas are a completely acceptable, doctorapproved and time-tested option when feeding baby. Breastfeeding is hard. It seems like it should be natural and easy, but so often it isn’t. A recent study conducted by Perrigo Nutritionals found more than half of moms experience issues when it comes to breastfeeding baby with low breast milk supply being the top concern. If you experience breastfeeding challenges, look to formula as an ally. It can be used as a supplement while breastfeeding to provide some relief, or used exclusively, depending on mom and baby’s needs. Consider talking with a friend who has nursed her babies, your pediatrician or a lactation consultant at the Columbus La Leche League: www.lllofga.org/columbus.html Myth 2: You have to sterilize your baby’s bottles.

Your baby is most likely to prefer his or her formula at a consistent temperature. In other words, if you start warming it, you’ll probably have to continue warming it. Here’s an easy way to warm your baby’s bottle: Set the filled bottle in a container of warm water and let it stand for a few minutes. Check the temperature of the formula on the inside of your wrist before feeding it to your baby. It should feel lukewarm, not hot. Myth 4: Measuring formula isn’t a big deal - just “eyeball it.”

FACT: The instructions for preparing your baby’s formula are important. Follow the directions on the label carefully. If you put too little water in your baby’s formula, it can give baby dehydration or diarrhea. If you put too much water in the formula, you’re watering it down and your baby isn’t getting enough nutrients. It’s critical to measure carefully each time.

FACT: You do not need to sterilize your baby’s bottles. This is another time saver for you! You should sterilize new bottles and nipples before you use them for the first time. Simply put them in boiling water for five minutes. After that first time, however, you probably don’t need to sterilize them again. Instead, you can run bottles and nipples through the dishwasher. Or if you’re “old school,” wash them in hot, soapy water. Rinse them carefully to remove any soap residue.

Myth 5: Brand-name formula is best.

Myth 3: Babies prefer warm formula.

TIP: When feeding your baby, watch for signs of

FACT: Not necessarily. It’s perfectly fine to feed your baby formula at room temperature (if it’s freshly prepared), or even a little cool from the refrigerator.

FACT: Nationally advertised, brand-name formula and store-brand formula are practically identical but have different effects on your family budget! Did you know all infant formulas sold in the United States must meet the same FDA standards and offer complete nutrition for baby? That means store-brand formula is nutritionally comparable to nationally advertised brands. allergies such as skin reactions, excessive spit up or vomiting and continual fussiness or discomfort. If such signs are present, contact your doctor before switching formulas.

HOO’s HEALTHY A ventricular septal defect (VSD) (or “hole in heart”) is the most common of the heart defects that occur in newborn babies. A VSD is an opening in the wall (septum) that divides the heart’s lower two chambers (ventricles). When there is an opening in the septum between the left and right ventricles, the oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle flows into the right ventricle instead of traveling into the body. This means the heart and lungs have to work harder due to the increased volume of blood flowing into the lungs. A VSD that occurs in a newborn baby is formed before birth. Sometimes the septum between the ventricles does not form properly during pregnancy and there are one or more openings in the septum at birth. A VSD can occur alone or in conjunction with other heart defects. Adults who have a heart attack may develop a VSD due to damage to the muscle in the septum. The severity of symptoms experienced by an infant with a VSD varies with the size of the opening. A small hole may not cause any symptoms other than a murmur that the doctor hears during a baby’s well check exam. A

WHAT IS: VENTRICULAR SEPTAL DEFECT (VSD)

large VSD may cause the baby to become short of breath, tire quickly when feeding and have trouble gaining weight. If the hole is large, over time, the blood vessels in the lungs may be damaged by the high blood pressure caused by a larger than normal volume of blood. If a VSD is suspected, the doctor performs an echocardiogram to identify the exact issue with the heart’s structure. Smaller holes may close up on their own. Most of the time, treatment is not needed for small VSDs that don’t close. For larger VSDs that cause severe symptoms, open heart surgery may be needed in the first few months of life. Even if a large hole is not causing many VSD symptoms, surgery is usually performed in infancy or childhood to prevent complications from occurring later in life.
