Choose the greenest builder available

As building codes enforce tightened minimum standards for eco-responsibility, the more progressive builders are illustrating their own accountability by using and producing materials that are even more efficient than mandates demand. This is great news if you are currently designing, planning or simply getting ready to buy a new home — your investment will likely deliver greater environmental conservation, lower occupant costs and increased property value.

“Switching from wood-framing to concrete walls, for example, has so many spin-off benefits,” “Solid, air-tight concrete walls would initially lower your energy bills. You’ll live in a stronger, more comfortable home while the investment grows in resale value. As importantly, your home would create far lower demand on natural resources.” Designed like Lego, the interlocking Nudura forms are designed with monolithic concrete sandwiched between two continuous layers of expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam.

“The foam material isolates the concrete and significantly reduces the flow of heat through the wall,” says Rodgers. “It stabilizes the internal temperature from day to night fluctuations and provides a largely selfregulating environment. This faster method of construction creates one solid concrete wall.” As a result, you will need less energy for mechanical heating and cooling, delivering cost savings throughout the year. A home built with this concrete system is stronger, provides greater safety, offers greater sound and fire resistance, and would be far less prone to mold, cold spots and drafts. If you want your builder to use insulated concrete forms, be sure to make the request well before construction gets underway.

Houseplants Can Clean Indoor Air

Gardening is a rewarding hobby that can pay a host of dividends, both for the planet and the people doing the gardening. Healthy plant life can help clean the air by absorbing carbon dioxide and various air pollutants, while the act of gardening can help gardeners combat stress.

Clean indoor air is important for everyone, but especially so for those people who suffer from respiratory ailments like asthma. In fact, the American Academy of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology considers indoor air filtration an essential part of any strategy to improve respiratory health. But filtration systems and air purifiers are often not enough, and those who want the air in their homes to be as clean as possible may benefit from introducing certain houseplants into their homes. The following are a handful of plants that can help to improve indoor air quality.

But gardening does more than just provide gardeners with a reason to spend some time relaxing outdoors in an effort to relieve stress. Gardeners who raise certain plants may be able to bring those benefits with them when going inside as well. According to an article published in the journal Environmental Health Perspectives in October 2011, houseplants can work wonders when it comes to improving overall health, removing toxins from air, soil and water by metabolizing some toxic chemicals and releasing harmless byproducts while sequestering such toxins by incorporating them into plant tissues.

HOO’S N HU GRY

In 2016, more than 111 million viewers in the United States tuned in to watch the Big Game. Simply put, the Super Bowl is one of the most popular sports and entertainment events of the year. Many people celebrate with parties filled with friends and, of course, food. Hosts can try their hands at the following recipe for "Red Chili Braised Short Ribs" courtesy of "Jon Bonnell's Texas Favorites" Red Chili Sauce 1 yellow onion, diced 2 ribs celery, diced 5 cloves garlic, peeled and chopped 1 tablespoon butter 3 cascabel chiles 3 guajillo chiles 3 pasilla chiles 1 ancho chile 2/3 cup dry red wine 31/2 cups chicken stock 11/2 teaspoons kosher salt

1/2 teaspoon cracked black pepper 1/4 teaspoon ground coriander 1/2 teaspoon sweet smoked paprika 1 cinnamon stick Pinch of ground cumin 2 tablespoons tomato paste Short Ribs 8 to 10 thick-cut large beef short ribs 1 teaspoon salt 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 1/2 cup dry red wine

In a medium-size soup pot, sauté the onion, celery and garlic in butter until the onion softens. Remove the stems and seeds from the dried chiles and add them to the pot. Add the remaining sauce ingredients and cook for 1 hour at a light simmer, covered. Remove the cinnamon stick and puree the entire mixture until smooth, then strain out the solids and discard. Set the sauce aside. Season the short ribs with salt. In a Dutch oven, heat the vegetable oil on high heat and brown the shorts ribs over very high heat on all sides. Once the ribs are very brown, deglaze the pot with red wine, then pour in the Red Chili Sauce and cover with a tight-fitting lid. Place the pot in a preheated 250 F oven and cook for 5 hours. Once finished, the meat should be falling-off-the-bone tender and the sauce incredibly flavorful.

Make Mealtime More Eco-friendly An eco-friendly lifestyle is anything but selfless, as such a way of life can pay both immediate and long-term dividends, helping men and women in the present day while also contributing to healthier futures for generations to come. Even mealtime at home can be made considerably more eco-friendly with relatively little effort.

1. Stop handwashing dishes. A study found that people who handwashed place settings for 12 people used as much as 27 gallons of water, while washing the same amount of place settings in a dishwasher required just four gallons of water.

3. Avoid the stove when possible. Empty nesters, couples without children or single men and women who want to save energy come mealtime can use toaster ovens in lieu of traditional stoves when preparing small meals.

2. Shop with reusable shopping bags. Great meals begin at the grocery store, so there’s no reason why eco-friendly cooking cannot begin there as well. Over 100 billion plastic bags are used in the United States alone each year.

4. Recycle materials. Glass jars, plastic butter tubs, milk cartons, and other items are all recyclable. Many local governments have weekly if not biweekly pickups of recyclable materials, making it easier to ensure these items are given new life after being used.

Mealtime provides a host of opportunities for eco-conscious men and women to embrace practices that protect the planet.

Giving Back to Seniors Like the old saying goes, charity begins at home. If you’re looking to give back to your community, here’s a local group that could certainly use your support. The goal of the Tangipahoa Voluntary Council On Aging is to help residents of Tangipahoa Parish ages 60 and older remain independent and in their own homes as long as possible. Volunteers and case managers serve home-delivered meals to seniors, plus there are centers in Amite, Hammond, Independence, Ponchatoula, and Kentwood where seniors can go for free hot congregate meals and lunches. This organization also provides the elderly with helpful information on resources such as Medicare, transportation, and activities for them and their spouses. CELEBRATING

Enjoy a Fun New Year’s Eve Out on the Town New Year’s Eve is traditionally a night to go out on the town to celebrate with family and friends. Such celebrations tend to be rowdy, as millions of people across the globe say so long to one year while welcoming in the next. Because New Year’s Eve is such a popular night to paint the town red, prospective revelers may want to begin planning their celebrations early to ensure they have the safest and most enjoyable night possible.

1.

2.

3.

Book dinner reservations early. According to the National Restaurant Association, New Year’s Eve is one of the five most popular nights of the year to dine out. Restaurants can book up quickly and early for New Year’s Eve, so book reservations as early as possible. Try to get as accurate a potential headcount as possible before booking a reservation, erring on the side of an extra person or two if necessary. Utilize mass transportation. Because New Year’s Eve is such a popular night to go out, roads can become crowded in and around city centers or downtown areas. If possible, use mass transportation when going out on New Year’s Eve. Doing so can help revelers avoid traffic jams and keep the focus on fun. Choose a designated driver or utilize a taxi or ridesharing service like Uber . In areas where mass transportation is unavailable or unreliable, celebrants should choose a designated driver or drivers from their group, or arrange for rides home via a taxi or ridesharing service. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety notes that, between 2010 and 2014, there were an average of 118.2 crash deaths on January 1.

New Year’s Eve is one of the most popular nights of the year to go out. Celebrants who plan early can ensure a fun, safe and memorable night

Best Buys for the New Year

Smart shopping involves making budget-friendly purchases. Never paying full price is a mantra shoppers can follow to help keep their finances in check. The beginning of the year is often an ideal time to purchase certain items. Consumers who take advantage of sales offered at the start of the new year can save substantial amounts of money.

• Clothing: Post-Christmas sales are booming, and stores are looking to sell what’s left of their inventories to make room for spring and summer selections. Even though the weather outside is still cold, sweaters, pants, coats, are usually available at a discount come January. • Boats: Wintertime is boat show season, but it’s also the offseason for boaters who live in cooler climates. These factors combine to make it easier and less expensive to find a new boat. • Air conditioners: If the warm-weather season was particularly steamy this past year, it might be time to revamp the HVAC system or invest in some new portable units. Bankrate offers that the first few months of the year are prime times to shop for air conditioners.

• Linens and bedding: John Wannamaker was a retail entrepreneur and had a few department stores in New York and Philadelphia. Wannamakers held the first “white sale” in 1878, and since then many stores have continued the tradition. January is a great month to buy towels, sheets, bedspreads, and more at a discount. • Motorcycles: Riding a motorcycle is a fairweather hobby, and retailers are aware of this. The easy riders of tomorrow might be able to find great deals today. • Furniture: Many furniture manufacturers begin to churn out new inventory in February, so last season’s items will need to move quickly. Shoppers can often negotiate some good deals now and upgrade their homes’ decor.

Now that the holiday season has passed, consumers can begin to find deals on items for themselves.

How to Succeed with your New Year’s Resolution While it’s difficult to gauge just how many people make New Year’s resolutions each year, various factors suggest millions of people resolve to improve their lives each January. So how can men and women become part of the minority who see their resolutions through to fruition? The following strategies may help. • Plan on being patient. Men and women who expect immediate results may be in for some disappointment, and that can compromise their future efforts. Recognize that resolutions rarely produce overnight results, and that commitments to losing weight and saving more money take time. If necessary, set small goals that can serve as markers on your way to achieving the larger goal.

• Don’t be shy. Sharing your resolution with others is a great way to generate support for your pursuit. And that support can motivate you if you hit a rough patch and keep you on track as you progress toward your goal. By sharing your resolution with others, you’re also indirectly inviting others who might have set similar goals in the past to offer incite and/ or advice, which can prove invaluable.

• Be as specific as possible. In addition to being patient, being specific when deciding on a resolution can increase the likelihood that the successful pursuit of that resolution will have as positive an impact on your life as possible. For example, a nonspecific resolution to lose weight may be successful if you only shed a single pound. But men and women who resolve to lose weight typically want to lose more than one pound. By resolving to lose a predetermined and specific number of pounds, you might be more likely to commit to your goal, and more encouraged the closer you get to achieving that goal.

• Expect setbacks. Just like it’s important to be patient, it’s equally important to recognize there will be setbacks. Men and women who resolve to save more money and have set specific monthly savings goals should not allow one monthly shortfall to derail all of their efforts. An unforeseen expense might compromise your ability to meet your monthly savings goal. Such setbacks are inevitable regardless of your resolution, so don’t be discouraged when they happen. Just commit to getting back on track in time to meet your next goal.

Successful New Year’s resolutions might be hard to come by. But there are ways to stay the course and see resolutions through to realization.

Healthy Resolutions for the Year Ahead Many people see the dawn of a new year as the perfect time to implement changes that they hope will have positive impacts on their lives in the year ahead. New Year’s resolutions have a way of falling by the wayside as the year progresses, but sticking with the following healthy resolutions can have lasting impacts on the lives of men and women.

• Read more. Many adults wish they had more time to read, but busy schedules filled with commitments to work and family can make it hard to pick up a book every day. But perhaps more men and women would find time to read if they knew doing so could add years to their lives. • Sleep more. More time to sleep might seem like an unattainable goal for many men and women. But the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute notes that ongoing sleep deficiency can increase a person’s risk for chronic health problems, including heart disease, kidney disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and stroke. • Turn off your devices. As recently as 15 years ago, many adults made it through their days without smartphones, tablets, e-readers, and other devices that are so prevalent today. While it might seem impossible to live without such devices in the 21st century, turning them off can have profound impacts on people’s quality of life. • Work less. Working fewer hours may help many professionals cut back on their stress, as the APA notes that 65 percent of Americans cited work as their primary source of stress. But working fewer hours may also make men and women more productive.

Committing to healthy New Year’s resolutions can have profound and unexpected consequences that can greatly improve one’s quality of life.

Why dental hygiene is essential for overall health The importance of maintaining clean teeth and healthy gums goes beyond having fresh breath and a white smile. Many people are surprised to discover that oral hygiene plays an integral role in overall health. Research indicates that oral health mirrors the condition of the body as a whole. An oral health check-up also may be the first indication of a potential health issue not yet evident to a general medical doctor.

* Heart disease * Facial pain * Pancreatic cancer * Alzheimer's disease These health conditions are just a sampling of the relationship between oral health and overall health. Additional connections also have been made and continue to be studied.

Protect your Identity and Save Money Identity theft is a pervasive problem. According to figures from the Bureau of Justice Statistics, an estimated 17.6 million people, or about 7 percent of U.S. residents age 16 or older, were victims of at least one incident of identity theft last year

There are non-expensive ways for men and women to protect themselves from identity theft: * Guard personal information. Do not share your personal information over the Internet unless you are on a secured site. This will be identified by the https:// preceding the rest of the URL. Sometimes a padlock symbol will appear somewhere on the page. * Watch your wallet. Do not leave your wallet or purse unattended. Keep the bare minimum in a wallet so a thief does not have access to all of your personal information if the wallet is lost or stolen. * Sign up for alerts. Many financial institutions will offer free online or mobile alerts to warn of suspicious activity on your account. Take advantage of this service. * Lock down devices. Make sure computers and mobile devices are secured with a password, and only use secured networks when going online. * Get off of credit-card offer lists. You can stop credit bureaus from selling your name to lenders by going to www.optoutprescreen.com or calling 888-567-8688.

Identity theft can lead to plenty of paperwork hassle and loss of funds. Preventing it from happening is easier than you might think.

The Benefits of Umbrella Insurance

Insurance policies come in various forms. There is a type of insurance to cover everything from motor vehicles to personal health to apartment dwellings. While the majority of people understand the importance of insuring their homes and cars, many may not explore the benefits of a different type of insurance: umbrella coverage. Unlike other types of insurance that only offer one specific coverage, umbrella insurance is a single policy that covers various aspects of a person's life. An umbrella policy can fill in the gaps where liability limits come into play with other insurance policies, keeping a person protected regardless of deductibles and other assets. According to the financial resource Money Crashers, umbrella insurance is a type of liability insurance. Its main purpose is to protect policy holders in the event of lawsuits. The umbrella policy will provide additional coverage against bodily injury liability claims and property damage liability claims. These policies also provide broader forms of coverage and can help cover some legal fees, if necessary. Trusted Choice Independent Insurance Agents says umbrella insurance is important because it can prevent financial ruin in the case of an accident. The amount of umbrella coverage a person may need depends on how much that person is worth. Prospective policy holders can calculate their total assets and then take out policies in that amount or more to protect their net worth. When reviewing umbrella policies, it's also wise to think ahead to future income and how one's assets may grow. Adjust policies to account for inferred earnings or other expected assets.

Learn more about umbrella policies that can offer above-and-beyond protection by speaking with a trusted insurance agent.
